Nutter takes the Directors Guild Award, while Headey charms on NPR

The winners of the 68th Annual Directors Guild of America Awards were announced last night in Los Angeles, and Game of Thrones has a new addition to its trophy shelf!

NutterDirector David Nutter won the award for Outstanding Directorial Achievement in a Dramatic Series for his work on the Game of Thrones season 5 finale, “Mother’s Mercy.” He was nominated five times previously, including once for the Game of Thrones Red Wedding episode, “The Rains of Castamere.”

Nutter also won the 2015 Directing Emmy Award for “Mother’s Mercy.”

Podcast reveals new info about Game of Thrones disastrous unaired pilot

Scriptnotes, a weekly podcast hosted by screenwriter John August had showrunners Dan Weiss and David Benioff on as guests with another screenwriter by the name of Craig Mazin.  Mazin apparently advised them on the pilot that Benioff and Weiss originally showed HBO.  Uproxx culled the relevant quotes, if you don’t want to listen to the whole podcast.

Game of Thrones wins 4 Visual Effects Society Awards!

The 14th Annual Visual Effects Society Awards ceremony occurred last night.  The Visual Effects Society is a global professional honorary society for the entertainment industry that represents all of the visual effects practitioners.  They have over 3,000 members in more than 30 countries.  Variety and other news sources are reporting that they awarded Games of Thrones four trophies, one of which was for the City of Volantis (image at top).  Who could forget the meticulous detail of those scenes with the fantastic overhead shots of the Long Bridge.  It created the perfect setting for Tyrion’s adventures.

Game of Thrones wins the Art Directors Guild Award!

Yesterday, Game of Thrones won another award for season 5. The show took home the Art Directors Guild Award for art direction in a One-Hour Period or Fantasy Single-Camera Series, beating Downton Abbey, Gotham, The Knick and Mad Men.

Game of Thrones was nominated for its art direction in three episodes in particular- “High Sparrow,” “Unbowed, Unbent, Unbroken,” and “Hardhome,” and the fine work by GoT’s team took home the prize last night.

Game of Thrones at the SAG Awards tonight!

The cast of Game of Thrones has turned out in force tonight to support the show as it competes it at the Screen Actors Guild Awards. The show is up for three awards, including Outstanding Performance by an Ensemble in a Drama Series, Outstanding Performance by a Male Actor in a Drama Series, and the Performance by a Stunt Ensemble Award.

Before the ceremony even began, Game of Thrones won the award for Outstanding Action Performance by a Stunt Ensemble in a Comedy or Drama Series. This means Thrones has won the stunt award for an astounding FIVE years running! Congratulations to GoT’s talented and hard-working stunt team.

Tonight, Peter Dinklage is nominated for the award for Outstanding Performance by a Male Actor in a Drama Series. He’s up against Mad Men‘s Jon Hamm, Rami Malek of Mr. Robot, Bob Odenkirk of Better Call Saul,  and House of Cards’ Kevin Spacey.

Update: Kevin Spacey has won the award for Male Actor. Congratulations to Spacey!

For the major ensemble award where the entire cast of Game of Thrones is nominated, they’ll be up against the casts of Downton Abbey, Homeland, House of Cards and Mad Men. 

Update: The drama ensemble award goes to Downton Abbey! Congrats to the cast of DA.

Sophie Turner teases Game of Thrones season 6 : A “really, really big one for Sansa”

Sophie TurnerGame of Thrones cast members are arriving in Los Angeles for tonight’s SAG Awards ceremony, and Sophie Turner has offered up a few season 6 tidbits at a pre-awards party.

Last night at Entertainment Weekly‘s SAG Awards party, the actress spoke with the magazine about what’s to come on Game of Thrones this year.

Turner says this will be the “biggest season yet” with “so many shocks, it’s massive.”

As for her character, “I mean this season is a really, really big one for Sansa,” the actress teases. “It’s probably her best season yet. It’s her really coming into her own. She, this season, really commands the respect that she deserves and she grabs hold of it and she runs with it and it’s really good.”

According to Turner, viewers will “finally getting that storyline that you’ve been craving for the past five seasons.” She says, “It was amazing because the past five seasons, it feels like it’s been building up and up to that.[…] You can only suffer so much before she finally gets her, the respect that she deserves.”

Game of Thrones nominated for Shorty Awards

Game of Thrones, Maisie Williams and a popular GoT GIF have all been nominated for Shorty Awards, which are honors for excellence in social media.

The Shorty Awards are divided into two competitions: influencers and brands. All three of our nominees fall into the latter category. Influencer winners (and five additional finalists) are selected through a combination of votes from the public and scores from The Real Time Academy, whose members include Jenna Marbles and Arianna Huffington.

Nominees are judged for the quality and originality of their content on all social media platforms, innovation in social media usage, interaction with followers, fans, friends and critics and their overall impact on the world.
