The North Remembers: Waiting for Game of Thrones S2

Raven LogoThree years ago we were impatiently waiting for season two to start (the premiere was on April 1, two weeks earlier than S5!). There were promo shots, character portraits, first (p)reviews, collectible Entertaintment Weekly covers, regular TV Guide covers, and all that jazz.

  • A new writer was added to the team, Vanessa Taylor. This reminds me that we miss female writers on the show. Too bad Jane Espenson did not stick around after her one-episode stint in S1.
  • Speaking of S1, the boxset of the first season came out in March. It was high on the charts, and the first-week sales record for HBO shows was broken with 350,000 units. A big hit from the start, no question about it.
  • Episode titles for 203 through 206 were revealed. Do you still remember them? ‘What is Dead May Never Die’, ‘Garden of Bones’, ‘The Ghost of Harrenhal’, and ‘The Old Gods and the New’.
  • We got this glorious Simpsons GoT opening.
  • Four trailers! Seven Devils, a classic, The More You Love, Nowhere to Hide, and The Price for Our Sins.
  • On top of that, a 22 min promo You Win of You Die was released, looking back as S1 and offering some glimpses into S2, alongside two shorter videos introducing new characters and new locations.
  • They also gave us SIX clips from episode 201, and THREE clips from 202. Way too much, heh heh.
  • The companion book to the first two seasons penned by Bryan Cogman was announced that month (as you know we got both that and another for seasons three and four since).

The Telegraph interviews Jessica Henwick and Rosabell Laurenti Sellers

84098A really nice interview just dropped out of thin air, courtesy of The Telegraph!

Two of the three Sand Snakes, Nymeria Sand (played by Jessica Henwick) and Tyene Sand (played by Rosabell Laurenti Sellers) have just turned up, and I’m thrilled to say they talked quite a bit!

(Good on ye, Telegraph!)

The third (and eldest) sister, Obara (Keisha Castle-Hughes) was not present for the interview, but we still got some decent dish on her directly from the other two.

Rosabelle_Laurenti_SellersI strongly suggest you read all about it HERE, because there’s a lot… but of course I have some highlights:

(Yes, there are mild spoilers.)

Sellers reveals that Tyene is the youngest sister, and confirms she is the daughter of Ellaria Sand (Indira Varma). It’s also confirmed that Nymeria is the daughter of an Eastern noblewoman who died in battle.

Henwick states that Lady Nym is the most strategic of the three, though Sellers states that Tyene is not adverse to using poison. Henwick also states, “If Obara has an obstacle, she just goes right through it.” All three daughters are said to have been raised with an inborn hatred of the Lannisters.

Henwick states that there is also a slight resentment toward Prince Doran (Alexander Siddig), since “if he had gone [to the wedding] then [our father, Oberyn] wouldn’t have died.”

Monday fun day: Golf, make-up, and other manly pursuits

image1April’s almost here, nerds! And that of course means daily additions and articles to feed the hype machine. You know it’s what you want.

First off, Direct Golf UK details how they made their very own Iron Throne replica out of golf clubs. Because nothing quite says having extra time on your hands like using golf clubs for something other than golf.

That’s a beaut.

Additionally, courtesy of the Belfast Telegraph, we have a cute little article on Pamela Smyth, one of Game of Thrones‘ makeup supervisor. I enjoyed it.

Ever wondered how you would fare in Westeros? Take Vouchercloud’s How Well-Off Would You Be In Westeros quiz!

(Me, I would be dead.)

Lastly (after the cut), we get some musical action coming at us live from the Ultra Music Festival in Miami. That old flying Dutchmen, Armin van Buuren (no relation to Martin van Buren) (or is there?) a trance staple, gets really Throney at the 45:30 minute mark of his set. It’s okay. Semi-bawze, or whatever the kids are saying these days.

New Game of Thrones Season 5 Teaser

A brand new teaser has surfaced on the official Game of Thrones YouTube channel.

This teaser is essentially a condensed version of the “The Wheel” trailer, but there is a small number of brand new shots, including some action from Hardhome, Meereen and Dorne.

With just over two weeks until the season premiere, do you think it likely that we will get another full-length trailer?

George R. R. Martin not writing a script for Season 6; Dornish cast interviewed

George R. R. Martin recently announced his cancellation of appearances at a number of conventions around the world, citing his dedication to finishing The Winds of Winter as the reason. BryndenBFish used this opportunity to take an in-depth scientific look at the prospects of the book’s completion, timely or otherwise.

Coming hard on the heels of that announcement, George has now released a follow-up entry on his NotABlog. In it, he hits back at reporting outlets and fans who misinterpreted his message to mean that he had cancelled all appearances, with the intent to finish Winds at the expense of all else.

Listen, please. I am skipping San Diego Comicon and World Fantasy Con… but as of this writing, I am still planning on making all of my other scheduled appearances. Okay? Clear?

I would prefer not to have to cancel anything, but that depends on how the work is going… And by “work,” I mean WINDS OF WINTER, of course… but not exclusively WINDS OF WINTER. When I say, “my plate is full,” I don’t just mean with WINDS.

Kit Harington on Castle Black’s generational gap, and a new glimpse of Dorne

gameofthrones15_07

In an interview with the Irish Examiner, Kit Harington publicly opened up for the first time about the late J. J. Murphy, who will appear as Ser Denys Mallister in Season 5.

It was sad… He was in a scene in episode three, so I met him then. He was an old gent, but he was very excited being on set. We had a good chat. It was a day that Peter Vaughan [Maester Aemon Targaryen] was also on set — two legends of the acting world — and they sat and traded stories.

Why Queen Elizabeth didn’t take the Iron Throne, and more Game of Thrones interview and casting details

QEIII

Executive producers David Benioff and D.B. Weiss appeared on Late Night with Seth Meyers this week, mostly answering questions we’ve all heard dozens of times. But there was one interesting tidbit- the showrunners explain why the queen of England declined to claim the Iron Throne during her well-publicized visit to the set in Northern Ireland last summer.

“Apparently the Queen of England is not allowed to sit on a foreign throne,” says Benioff. “This is an esoteric rule we didn’t know about until that moment.”

“That’s the thing about the queen, she’s a stickler,” jokes Meyers.

More stuff. Some wonderful, some weird.

logoFaBiAxey here, determined to serve once more (as all men must), bounding to you with a dearth of not-quite-news, some of which is bound to make you wonder why you even clicked on this page.

First off, the good: We lucky fools here in LA-LA Land will be getting an exclusive screening of Game of Thrones season 5 episode 1! On Thursday, April 9, GoT writer/producer Bryan Cogman, partnered with Larchmont Charter School, will be showing the season opener to a hundred or so fans at the United Talent Agency. Tickets are $40 and go to benefit Larchmont Charter. I will be going there, and will be asking some questions of Bryan Cogman, who will be fielding ’em after the show. If you’re not in L.A. (I realize most of you are not), toss up some questions, and I’ll try to throw a few at the Cogmeister. If you’re interested in attending, here’s the link!

Secondly, a nice new interview with Kit Harington has surfaced (thanks, snuu!), courtesy of the Los Angeles Times and Emmy Contender Chat. It’s pretty meaty, a half-hour long, though no spoilers were given. (The interviewer tried.) Interview after the cut!
