Telltale’s Game of Thrones Episode 3: The Sword in the Darkness – A Review

CBClHg3WgAA0MvD

Apologies for the late-ish review. The episode was only released in Europe yesterday, and I didn’t have a chance to play through it until today. Unfortunately, despite some enjoyable moments, I didn’t enjoy “The Sword in the Darkness” nearly as much as the previous two episodes.

Telltale’s formula seems to be growing increasingly stale with this series – a pity and a surprise, since the simultaneously-releasing Tales From the Borderlands has the potential to be one of the studio’s greatest offerings.

I must admit, I am getting weary of Telltale’s constant shoving in our face of the fact that we’re playing a videogame. Many critical choice moments jerk the player right out of any immersion they may have had, as the choice is presented in such an on-the-nose manner. With the likes of The Witcher 3 coming out later this year, and considering what CD Projekt RED have claimed about their seamless plot-changing-choice integration, Telltale’s methods may well be highlighted for their archaic nature.

Contains full spoilers for the episode.

Rattleshirt recast

Ross O'HennessyIt looks like the Lord of Bones will have a new face next time he appears on Game of Thrones, in season 5.

According to the Spotlight CV of actor Ross O’Hennessy, he will be taking over the role of wildling leader Rattleshirt. O’Hennessy is credited with the part for a Miguel Sapochnik episode. Sapochnik is directing episodes 7 and 8 of this coming season.

Rattleshirt was last seen escorting Jon Snow to Mance Rayder’s camp in the premiere of season three, “Valar Dohaeris.”

O’Hennessy most recently played the regular role of Commander Quattrone on Da Vinci’s Demons.

Thanks to Carne for bringing it to our attention.

There is one other casting confirmation, which I’ll tuck beneath a cut for spoiler reasons.

A Scientific Guess at George R.R. Martin’s Progress on The Winds of Winter

Editor’s Note:

The eternal question for A Song of Ice and Fire fans is “When is the book coming out?” This time around we’re waiting for George R.R. Martin’s ‘Son of Kong’, The Winds of Winter. Every other month there is a new rumor about a publication date for the long-awaited book. The latest rumored date to be shot down was October 2015. Guest feature writer BryndenBFish takes a thorough look at Martin’s work on the series, and makes a qualitative assessment on his progress, predicting the best- and the worst-case scenarios for when we can expect to see The Winds of Winter on bookshelves. -Sue the Fury

Caveat Lector: This post contains spoilers for all five published A Song of Ice and Fire novels as well as spoilers for the unpublished sixth novel of A Song of Ice and Fire

Introduction

Predicting when The Winds of Winter will come out is probably the most pressing issue for fans of George R.R. Martin’s A Song of Ice and Fire series. The most palpable fear among book-fans is that the TV series will pass the published A Song of Ice and Fire material at the end of A Dance with Dragons and move into uncharted territory spoiling some of the broad plot points and endings of the series.

Meanwhile, recent remarks by George R.R. Martin on his “NotABlog” indicate that he is not planning to attend the San Diego Comic Con or World Fantasy Convention to focus on The Winds of Winter. But in the same “NotABlog” post, GRRM left the door open to attending both conventions if he can complete and deliver The Winds of Winter before both conventions.

As such, fans have thought this was an indication that George R.R. Martin is done or on the home-stretch of The Winds of Winter. But is it? Do we know how far GRRM is in writing The Winds of Winter?
