Anatomy of a Throne: “Sons of the Harpy”

Note from the author: in my continued effort to get back up to speed with the television series, this week’s episode, “Kill the Boy” (505), will be published later today. In the meantime, please to enjoy our dissection of last week’s installment, “Sons of the Harpy” (504).

HBO’s Game of Thrones (typically, and before this current season) brandishes a consistent and high degree of fidelity to the nearly 5,000-page-long source material of George R.R. Martin’s A Song of Ice and Fire novels, but there still, of course, are differences. While most of these gaps from the page to the screen are small and detail-oriented, it is nonetheless the case that the most subtle discrepancies often hold the biggest insight into the adaptation process, into the demands of filmmaking, and into the rigors of the literary narrative.

This, then, is the anatomy of a key scene of Thrones – not because of its dramatic importance or visual effects whizbangery, but because of the telling nature of its realization.

Michael McElhatton & Iwan Rheon talk Bolton family tensions; plus new interviews with DeObia Oparei and Lena Headey!

Roose Bolton in Kill the Boy

Michael McElhatton talks with Vulture about the Bolton family antics in the latest episode.

“It’s the Boltons at their psychologically cruelest,” says the actor. Despite the tension of the scene, he says that on the day they filmed, “There was a lot of giggling on set, though! It was tremendous fun to do because it was so black, so dark. It’s not about blood or slashing or cutting, but it’s just twisted and psychological.”

With Roose’s new wife Walda pregnant, there may be competition on the horizon for Ramsay, who was only recently named the legitimate heir.

Kill the Bird

twitter-dead-croppedTwitter post!

This is what you want and it’s how you want it!

(Well, most of you. Some of you continue to despise Storify. Sorry!)

Since last week’s installment confused a small number of the newcomers (I usually invite new Twitter victims to come visit us) I feel like I should once more fully explain what we do here. Ahem.

At 6:00 PST (9:00 EST) each Sunday, I reTweet any number of funny or emotional or hysterical or furious tweets with the #GameOfThrones hashtag. I sometimes also go into the episode-specific hashtag i.e. #KillTheBoy, but usually get enough just from the GoT ‘tag by itself. I then post the best of the best here for your viewing entertainment.

(For those of you wondering, yes, the tweets completely spoil me to the episodes in question. But we all have to make sacrifices here.)

Clear? Cool? Excellent!

Curtain Call: Ian McElhinney

Barristan

Last week in “Sons of the Harpy”, Game of Thrones lost yet another long-standing cast member. In “Kill the Boy”, his character briefly appeared as he lay in wake – as elegant in death as he had been in life.

Ian McElhinney is a veteran of the Northern Irish screen who has had an extensive career in both acting and directing spanning over thirty years. By all accounts, that career looks to be expanding even further in the near future.

Ian displayed a multi-faceted range of acting prowess during his time on the show as Barristan Selmy. And what a time it was – he has graced our screens since the very first season.

For many, Ian’s most memorable scene was in Season 1’s “The Pointy End”, when Barristan boldly turned his back on the newly-crowned Joffrey, threatening his Kingsguard brothers in the process. He completely sold the world-weary intensity of a man who has survived more battles than any other, while still retaining the vigour and will to do it all over again at a moment’s notice.

Game of Thrones sets a new piracy record with “Kill the Boy”

pirates

According to Variety and piracy-tracking site Excipio, less than twelve hours after the airing of “Kill the Boy,” Game of Thrones has broken the record for illegal downloads in a day.

This shatters the record previously set by Game of Thrones last year, when 1.86 million users downloaded the season four premiere.

Variety says:

The first pirated copies of episode five of the current season of HBO’s popular fantasy epic showed up on file-sharing sites shortly after it aired in the U.S. at 9 p.m. ET Sunday, according to piracy-tracking firm Excipio. The 2.2 million individual Internet addresses tracked by the firm were recorded as of 10 a.m. ET Monday.
