Nathalie Emmanuel on how she wants to go and Jack Bender describes Game of Thrones season 6 as …

Джек-Бендер1-620x350

Mind boggling!

Jack Bender, one of the new directors announced for Season 6, gave an hint of what’s to come to BGR.

Game of Thrones actress Nathalie Emmanuel also discusses her time on the show and what kind of death she wants when and if her time comes.

In BGR (Boy Genius Report), Bender discusses how he will be directing episodes 5 and 6 and also clarified that he has read most of the scripts (not The Winds of Winter) for next season including his own episodes.

He also pointed out how closely David Benioff and Dan Weiss work with author George R.R. Martin when it comes to preparing each season of Game of Thrones.

Dan Weiss and David Benioff are enormously brilliant and unpretentious guys, and I know they communicate closely (with Martin).

He also notes that because of the enormous size of the episodes, you have to commit four-and-a-half to six months at a time to direct.

Bender (along with the cast and crew of Game of Thrones) will leave for Belfast in a few weeks to begin shooting Season 6.

In other news, Nathalie Emmanuel (Missandei) told BANG Showbiz that she has accepted that her character could be killed off at any moment (like that close call in Episode 9, thank you, Tyrion!) She has also said that when/if that time does come, she would like to go out in a blaze of glory:

If I do die I’d want it to be something really cool – something that will make everyone cry. It would have to be something really heroic, like she sacrifices herself to save someone else, or she suddenly learns how to be an amazing swordsman and dies in an epic battle. That could be fun.

What do you think that entails for Season 6? Let us know in the comments below!

Do I finally get a Hodor? After… after years of being a fan of this site?

EDIT: Yes, I do! Sweet! I’m… I’m so happy!

Congratulations, it is truly an epic day. You ser, are one special man. Enjoy this wonderful day and never forget how amazing it was for you! Congrats.

  3. I actually think show Missandei survives to rule Slaver’s Bay. Of course, I also thought Shireen would survive…

  4. Ragman’s Harbor: Congratulations, it is truly an epic day. You ser, are one special man. Enjoy this wonderful day and never forget how amazing it was for you! Congrats.

    :D!

Anyway, on-topic: I’ve always had this strange feeling Missandei will rule Slaver’s Bay (as Randa just pointed out!) or even rule Westeros of all things, should Daenerys perish but her “will” remain, so to speak.

  5. I think enough of Daenerys’ “companions” have bit it already. I believe Missandei deserves to live to the end, dammit! 🙂

  6. Hoping Nathalie survives to provide us with more bathing scenes. Preferably, at least one per episode.

  7. I don’t think book Missandei will die. Show Missandei is nothing like book Missandei though so who knows?

  8. LordDavos:
Of Dany’s crew Daario could be most vulnerable to not making it much further.

I hope not. I may be the minority here, but i really like how Michiel Huisman plays him.

  9. LordDavos,

He’ll live till Westeros. Dany needs some fun and he was pretty likeable towards the end of the season. Michiel is a really good actor. 😉

Speaking of Team Dany. Her crew is pretty big right now and at the end of season probably another pretty important figure to represent Dothraki. If things go smoothly.

  10. I think Daario might discover Jorah has greyscale on their journey to find Dany, and Jorah will be forced to kill him to keep it quiet. That would make for a great swordfight and some delicious drama later.

  11. I just there’s the third betrayal to come, the question of his future at Dany’s side has been raised by Tyrion and if there is going to be a third significant relationship for her in the future, there needs to be some break – some time of her being alone – before that happens.

  12. Thomas,

I like him too. Ed Skrein was good in the scenes he was in, but he looked a bit too Targaryen himself, imo. Micheal Huisman has more of the ‘look’ (I can imagine him with blue hair), and I think he’s done pretty well in a role that has opinions divided.

Not sure Jorah could win in a contest with him, although Jorah being marked for death himself now is almost a little too obvious to maybe happen. Wishful thinking on my part, likely.

  13. Randa Noyce,

That might work… Missandei remains embassador alongside Grey Worm and a portion of the Unsullied. Makes too much sense for the show universe 🙂

  14. At least he didn’t describe S6 as being “dark”. Ugh. Tired of that description not only because of its repetition, but also because of its accuracy.

  15. That Missandei and Grey Worm romance needs to die a horrible death. Their scenes together are excruciating to watch.

  16. Al Swearengen,

Can’t stand their scenes together. I don’t usually hate filler (especially when it gives us silly silly moments like Karl Fooking Tanner, legend of Gin Alley), but the Grey Worm romance filler feels like it slows the show down to a halt whenever it airs and is just a waste of screen time that doesn’t seem to be ever going anywhere. I can’t help but dislike Grey Worm too solely because I find it annoying that he’s apparently the only unsullied that can fight worth a damn.

I’m with you guys. Enjoyed the Missandei character in the books but think her adaption hasn’t worked. They’ve removed a lot of what made her unique and likeable and what we’re left with is aged-up, uninteresting version and the god awful MissanGrey! I’m not questioning Miss Emmanuels acting ( and certianly not how hot she is) but I think the Little Scribe would have been a lot more memorable. She was one of the few characters i nDany’s story I found memorable or interesting ( the other was Barry but he’s gone and been killed off now!).

  18. Thomas: I may be the minority here, but i really like how Michiel Huisman plays him.

I’ll join you in the minority (though I strongly suspect it’s not that much of a minority out in the world!) I like Michiel Huisman’s Daario quite a lot.

  19. Jeff O’Connor,

Oh don’t worry. You are most certainly not in the minority! 😀 I enjoy their scenes, Certainly far more than certain other characters and scenes in Westeros.
I am going to admit that I actually like Missandei much more than a couple of top-tier characters. 😉

  20. am i the only one who likes Missandei/Grey Worm? i think they are a breaze of fresh air in Dany’s story.

and ive read the books and actoully love this Missandei more, she’s a true friend to dany, they are almost like sisters. much more memorable and pleasing to watch if you ask me. we also see another side of Grey Worm that is very welcome, lets admit it he’s a non character in the books

what i think is the problem is that (some, not all, i’m very sure those guys are very much in the minoroty, when thinking the show is the anticrhist) book readers can’t get past the way they imagined the character, a liitle girl as opposed as how she is in the show, a mature women.

  21. Intresting …

But such are the moves made unpopular among conservatives and clergy of which some have accused of bizarre moves like ” throwing dwarfs ” as many times denied . Specifically , in Saudi Arabia people dwarfism are outcasts , and the prince of them, according to his critics , allegedly employed as a ” court people “ because many Saudi rich people believe that throwing dwarfs brings happiness .

Let`s hope the Saudis dont start watching GOT, or those dwarfs will find that the visit to the cock merchant is much more unpleasent then beeing tossed around.

  22. I definitely hope Missandei will get a more important role in the following season(s). Nahalie was very under-used the past season, and she’s way too good an actress to just use as “eye-candy”. I don’t even mind the Missandei – Grey Worm romance per se, but it’s definitely not written in a captivating way.

  23. Mihnea: am i the only one who likes Missandei/Grey Worm? i think they are a breaze of fresh air in Dany’s story.

No, I like it too! The Dany storyline would feel a bit cold without it, if the characters around her were just advisers and fighters with no emotions and lives. And their love story is really short, we’ve had what? 2-3 scenes of 1 minutes in the last two seasons? When you listen to the complaints about the Missandei/Grey Worm romance, it looks like it lasted 2 hours!

  24. Greenjones,

    Kay,

Oh, thank goodness! I was beginning to honestly wonder about that! And I agree, Kay — I think I like Missandei somewhat more than even some of the mains. She’s pretty great.

  25. MokaWhen you listen to the complaints about the Missandei/Grey Worm romance, it looks like it lasted 2 hours!

    I know! That’s what I always think!

I believe what it stems from is that the GoT fanbase is so used to having such short seasons that every second of screentime is perceived as either a win or a waste at times, you know? I mean, like, I remember back when Star Trek shows were on the air and their seasons were 26 episodes, folks weren’t quite as up-in-arms about individual scenes they perceived as total duds… and the Trek fandom can be quite passionate indeed about these things, too!

  26. TheTouchOfFrost:
I don’t think book Missandei will die. Show Missandei is nothing like book Missandei though so who knows?

You know, I’d like to see someone put together a video montage of show Missandei clips dubbed with Roy Dotrice’s audio book Missandei voice. 🙂

  27. I was just reading the Bender article and it says:

Naturally, he’s not coughing up any secrets of what’s coming down the pike in Westeros

Interesting phrasing to use! Perhaps Bneder will be directing (in Ep. 5 or 6) something important going on in Pyke and the Iron Islands?

  28. I too feel like Missandei is a good solution for keeping Slavers Bay under control when Dany goes to Westeros. I wood like to see her character grow into someone more assertive first though.

  29. tiny direwolf,

I’ve been asking myself for a while what is it that Daenerys intends to do with Meereen, and more importantly with her emancipation of the slaves, once she departs towards Westeros. Will she simply abandon them? That cannot be the case, right? As I see it, either Meereen is up in flames when she is ready to depart or she leaves someone there to govern for her. The books will be more complicated, I’m sure, but in terms of the show, Grey Worm & Missandei ruling would be a nice solution. A nice, non-lethal send-off for the characters.

  30. Mihnea,

For me personally, it’s not about them changing the character. It’s changing the character to make them less interesting. The show has improved on a lot of non-major characters (Bronn, Olenna, Shireen) but I’d file Missandei under ‘lost the uniqueness and likebaility’ with the likes of Loras, Daario and the Sand Snakes (didn’t think they could get more on dimensional than the book versions but…). I find there is absoutely nothing about her personality at all and it’s just the rather contrived MissandGrey love story between her and Grey Worm. The book character was quite emotionless (which added more to her when she did display any) but that fit with her character as she was a kid so it made her more unique and her wise council stuck out too for the same reason. Show Miss-bland-ei is pretty much a better-looking Irri/Jhiqui!

    Aryamad,

The disturbing thing is , someone, somewhere, in the world will have already done it!

  31. TheTouchOfFrost,

i think here there is just a different view of things, i for one see book Missandei much more ”bland” then in the show. i see her realetion with Dany much better in the show, when Dany ask her for advise, when they hold hands in the pit scene. in the show they are like sisters, something i never saw in the books.

and her realetion with GW giver her a TON of character development that she never has in the books.

i for one don’t understand this complain about darrio, they have made many changes i know but i dont see him as under-developed. wich i cant say about book darrio who i can fit in the cliche ”cruel exentric sellsword who sleeps with a young princess”

on a different point i would advise against this ”mis-bland-ei” its very hard to take your opinion seriously when you have to resort to name-calling

  32. “or she suddenly learns how to be an amazing swordsman and dies in an epic battle.”

i wish Barristan had died like that… 🙁

  33. Mihnea,

Well, you have your thoughts and I have mine. I think the book really hammers home the importance of Missandei to Dany both as an advisor and friend and she treats her like a little sister. She regularly states how fond of her she is and she even sleeps in the same bed as her (imagine that happening in the show with the aged-up version, thoughts would inevitably turn to Irri-like events!). The show version…it seems really forced. Like they haven’t broken through the master/servant relationship. The hand holding was a bit too corny for my liking and then instantly meant nothing when she left her to fend for herself as soon as Drogon turned up. I preferred the book holding hands scene they had as it really suggested that Missandei was the only person Dany really trusts in the world.
New Daario is better than the old one but still not as cocky as I think he should be. I’m not suggesting we got in blue hair direction but a bit more swagger. He was showing a bit more towards the end of the season so hopefully that’s a start. Not too fussed though as wasn’t a fan of his character in the books so the show can do what they like with him! Will sit and wait for his inevitable betrayel of Dany!
Trying to make it a bit more light-hearted. Discussing the show doesn’t always have to be serious business! 😛

  34. John,

I’d prefer if he’d just not died! Think he would have been more use as a character if he was marshalling Mereen with Dany away plus would have been a good gateway to referencing more stories about Rhaegar and the Mad King.Plus I think that Grey Worm dying would have had the same emotional impact and been better as he’s not the best of foils for characters being there as pretty much hte face of the Unsullied. Plus it would’ve ended the Missandei love story nonsense!

  35. Mihnea:
    John,

oh for gods sake the man died killing 20 PEOPLE, if thats not heroic i dont know what is

The greatest swordsman in a generation died in his first and only fight to a pack of redshirts in an ally, to no other effect than to save a minor secondary characters’ life and cause Dany to thrash around and commit her 164th act of genocide in the next episode?

I think I can come up with a bit more fitting ending for Selmy than that.

  36. Chad Brick,

during that scene my 5 Unsullied friends where praying Selmy dies and NOT Grey Worm

like it or no in the show Grey worm is more a character then Selmy.

and this complain comes only from book readers, i saw not 1 complain from people who have only watched the show.

but alas i dont have Wimsey’s patience to argue so il just stop.

EDIT: when he dies from some stupid yunkai slave in TWOW i will luagh

  37. You’re probably not gonna get any big fight scenes, Nathalie. You’re playing the most nonviolent character in the show.

  38. Mihnea: during that scene my 5 Unsullied friends where praying Selmy dies and NOT Grey Worm

    Which is exactly my point.

  39. Mihnea:
    Chad Brick,

how does this prove your point?

Selmy being reduced to a less-than-tertiary status, quickly to be forgotten by non-readers? Heck, they couldn’t even give him the most impressive fight of the episode.

  40. Chad Brick,

    Yup. Yup. Yup.

To me, it felt like “OH hell, we only have 4 minutes left and we forgot to kill off Selmy. Quick! An ambush!”

  41. Chad Brick,

that is what barristan is in the books as well, the only role he has is to take control of mareen after dany leaves, wich in the show is the role they gave to tyrion/varys.
so if they know that selmy dies in the batle of mareen in the books, whats the point to keep him when you have tyrion there who can do the same thing, and is a fan-favourite?

and i truly think they don’t cut out important characters, so if GW still lives, i belive, he has a role to play further on.

i can’t understand people who think selmy will live in the books, the man is in his 60s, going in battle. like it or no i’m certain he wont ever go back to westeros alive

  42. I just wanted to thank you guys; I’d been rereading ASoIaF and I stopped in the middle of A Storm of Swords for some inconceivable reason, lost in tomes of completely dragon-less “real” history, but just popping into the site and one thread of your comments forced me to leap on my poor, battered, faded green paperback.

    So, thanks 😀
