New behind-the-scenes set pics from Game of Thrones season 4

The artistry of Game of Thrones is second-to-none, with production beginning months before actors even step foot on set. These new behind-the-scenes photos from season 4 give us a look at the creation of some famous set pieces featured this year on Game of Thrones, from the Wall in the far North, to Joffrey’s wedding, and to across the sea in Braavos.

This lion was featured at the Purple Wedding, with dwarves galloping out of the final, painted version.

The unique logo of the Iron Bank of Braavos looms large in this photo highlighting the incredibly detailed work on a door, from Stannis and Davos’ visit.

Sue the Fury: Even having seen the final product, I’m still amazed. We tend to think a lot of this is all special effects, but these incredible sets are made and sculpted every year.  I’m looking forward to seeing what season five brings.

  1. Wow, I want some more images of the Iron Bank, especially the doors. First they quote Alberti, now Ghiberti? I’m dead. Must find out the stories depicted!

  2. ProfessorArtNerd,

My first thought when I saw the doors on the Iron Bank was…wow, nice homage to Ghiberti.

If you learn what the stories in the panels depict, please share them!

Thanks for all the great pictures y’all continue to post.
I, for one, would have never noticed the detail the went into something like the door on The Iron Bank. Extraordinary!

  3. The fact that we just had two Ghiberti shout-outs at WotW just made me unreasonably happy.

    Good stuff!

    And Alberti, axey, please!

  5. This is amazing. Sometimes I forget that GoT is just a TV show! Lots of movies aren’t made with such attention to detail…

  6. Apparently a VERY BRIEF s5 “in production” piece aired on HBO after the Leftovers. Like it just showed an empty CB set and said “game of throne season 5 in production”. Did anyone here see that? (Not that I expect us to be able to glean all too much about s5 from it…)

  7. Greenjones,

This is bad news, also possibly for the production team. I suppose a reshoot is in order. R.I.P. indeed.

What we do know now is that there are still roles cast of which we didn’t know at all.

  8. dutch maester,

We should’ve never doubted that that was the case. They may only be smaller roles, but there’s bound to be quite a lot more casting news in the coming months as the shoot continues.

  9. Greenjones,

Wow… That’s crazy bad luck. I guess re-shoot. But I guess the good news is this means a) there’s more casting tidbits to come and b) there will be some legitimate interest in the

election of LC… So there’ll be Cotter Pyke? Bowen Marsh (as in, a real Bowen Marsh, not a random featured extra NW member that the GoT Wiki assumed was Bowen Marsh)?

Not that that’s really a surprise as they did mention it was coming up in S4. Are they going to get through all of Jon’s ADwD storyline this season? I suppose they have to…

  10. Amazing how much work goes into each one of these seasons!

Want to take the opportunity to say congrats on the new site. It looks amazing and has a great feel of community about it. I was a long time reader of the other site but very rarely posted. So glad to have come across this site now, especially during the leaner months of casting and early filming.

Going to see George do a talk at the Edinburgh Book Festival this evening! Really excited. He’s also doing a talk tomorrow afternoon, which I am sadly not attending, about the adaptation of the books to show, which sounds as if it could be really interesting too.

For anyone in the UK interested, BBC Arts Online are live streaming the talk this evening. Starts at 8.

Really? I want to see that video anyway even if they didn’t show much

  12. Axechucker,

The Ghiberti mention makes me sad! I was so close to Florence the summer of 1990 (I was in Rome for about 11 days). I wanted so badly to see The David and The Gates of Paradise but I didn’t have the extra cash (poor college student on scholarship at the time). Sigh…..some day.

    important enough to Google.
