  1. Nicely done

Listening to Ozzy Man with his pseudo Crocodile Dundee impersonation entertaining the Americans kind of reminded me of the Class clown dynamic from school and TV entertainment shows

As an Australian it’s always a bit odd as not many people are obviously actually like that here and its hard not to cringe at the performance sometimes. I think there’s Steve Irwin but he seemed to become more popular and well known in America before he became well known here. Had an American wife etc. That whole style seems to go down well with Americans for whatever reason

That said inbetween all that there’s some good discussion and points raised, and the denial version was a great outlet for the emotion we were all feeling at that time.

Generally speaking, I think international audiences would like the option of watching it at 5am or whatever. EG GoT and Walking Dead often screen Monday afternoon on Foxtel her to cut down on Piracy for those who want it straight away but then most people get home and watch it in the evening.

So this HBO Now makes some sense and it is a step in the right direction. This sort of thign will work well with niche shows. Instead of relying on a niche audience within the U.S they can sell to that niche audience globally which can add up to a bit of money. Too many good shows with international appeal have been cancelled because the Neilson ratings in the U.S. Over here we’re quite used to being up in the early hours watching European sport like EPL and Champs League etc

Will take a while though, the old system and executives are so used to the old style money streams, they become established over time and they are loathe to change because this can be rather tumultuous to the business model (eg look at impact of internet commerce, on bookstores, shopping malls and department stores), because they are used to working with other big institutions and there is Business friendships and networking involved and they want to stick with this model where they sell to overseas institutions/networks.

Obviously people turn to piracy and they try to initially clamp down on it but then some innovator like Netflix comes along and popularises the new paradigm en masse and everyone has to change. HBO Now with GoT is another changer, lots of other networks and shows will follow suit, people like On Demand because 9-5 working lives no longer exist. People like to Binge watch series when they have some time to themselves.

It’s still a bit of a case of a hybrid though because instead of working with on-selling TV show rights to overseas networks they are working with another big institution with Apple and there is this “Synergy” thing still with mixing Apple watch launch with GoT trailer.

Eventually HBO and other networks/studios will move to actually being comfortable with directly selling TV episodes to international customers which is what people want

I’ll be fair in pointing out the other side, with big Cable networks, having many channels in together means cross-channel subsidisation. So if I was to buy direct access to every network I like individually, it might end up being more expensive aggregate wise and it works the other way around for people who watch channels I don’t watch but still have as part of the package. It’s like Health Insurance, it only works if there is a large body young people who don’t claim as much cross-subsidise the older people who need to claim.

  2. I have to be completely honest and say that I really don’t like Mycah’s constant almost spoiling of things coming up in the show. Now people who listen to this know that

    Cersei

has a big important scene coming up this season – most likely relating to some kind of

    comeuppance involving the Faith Militant.

It’s not giving away actual details, but it’s telling people to look out for a big event concerning a particular character. And I know that others may disagree, but I feel that in itself is a spoiler. It’s like if you’re going to see a movie with a big twist, and somebody tells you that there’s a big twist. That ruins a lot of it right there – because you’re supposed to be caught completely off guard.

Agree to a degree, I’ve read the books now so it doesen’t matter but I did notice this a little bit. A lot of youtube reviewers seem to have the same challenge.

I think last time they had a section of the podcast dedicated to non-book readers and then later on in another section they went all out spoilery for book readers

Should point out I’m not being critical of Ozzy Man above which I have re-read and may sound like, he is doing very well and adds to the GoT online community very well.

Just pointing it is always strange when Australians project a certain caricature/style in shows/movies that are directed at an international audience. Obviously it’s all a performance, works well during the trailer review as we know that’s his style and it was like a live version of the first trailer review he did but during the serious discussion points I found myself wanting him to tone things down a bit as it was distracting and I was having to filter through the swearing performance to process the actually good points he was making

I am half English and there is a similar issue with English people, eg I recall an early episode of the Simpsons where a dog trainer was made out to be like Margaret Thatcher for example. Big difference to how English people are portrayed in English made shows/movies and international

  4. Eric, his marriage to Sansa is just about the last thing that would gain Tyrion any points – on the contrary, it can only make him more despised. Everyone knows that she was a hostage after her father was executed and that the Lannisters forced her to marry him so they could have a claim on her family’s lands, and most people would just assume that he was very much in favor of it and raped her in order to secure his hold on Wintefell, and it’s generally in line with his bad reputation as a power-greedy, lustful, ruthless monster. Remember how Catelyn and Robb reacted when they heard about the marriage? Catelyn was deeply disappointed and expressed shock and contempt that Tyrion married Sansa, after having promised to send her back in exchange for Jaime, and Robb said he was going to cut Tyrion’s head off if he gets his hands on him. Robb even thought the Lannisters would go even further and murder Sansa as soon as she had a child, providing them an heir to Winterfell. Forced marriages don’t help peace and reconciliation, or one’s reputation, they do the opposite. The only thing that actually would help Tyrion get a better reputation and some goodwill would be if they had a peaceful reunion, annuled their marriage with mutual consent and both testified it was never consumated.

On Sansa’s part, being technically married to a Lannister is only a balast she would need to get rid of to have any chance of gaining support in the North. Though at least it can protect her from other unwanted marriages to people who aren’t on another continent, for the time being.
