Sadly, still no premiere date for season 7 but Liam Cunningham (Davos Seaworth) suggests it could air in July.

What do you think of the new poster? Are you attending SXSW? Let us know below!

  1. Hodor,

quite a bit of ice and fire on that poster – is it supposed to be the Wall being melted by dragon fire?

  2. I’m kinda disappointed, I thought the bus add was just a portion of what the final poster would be. I thought we’d see some characters or a setting or something. And I don’t like the #

  3. I know many will slam it for being so simple, but I think that’s what makes it great. We’ll eventually get a more significant poster, equivalent to Ned on the Throne, Tyrion looking at Drogon and the other proper ones. This is just a tease — the hashtag for season seven with a hint of this year’s theme; ice and fire. It’s simple, stark, to the point in its symbolism. I like it.

Anyway. Hopefully we’ll get something from SXSW. Not a teaser trailer, probably, but perhaps a video promoting the new cast, announcing who they’re playing? They have done that for some seasons. Though there may not be enough new cast members for that! Whatever it is, I hope we get… something 🙂

    Ross,

Well, it’s not the final poster, is it. It’s just a teaser poster. The final poster, the one that will eventually be on the DVD/Blu-Ray box-set, is yet to come, and it will probably be more elaborate than this (season 3 was kind of the exception, which was also very minimalist; just the shadow of a dragon.)

  4. I like it but I have to admit it didn’t excite me as much as the Jon Snow poster last year.

  5. Vague poster is vague. lol Damn it, no matter how hard I squint there’s nothing hidden in there that I can tell. XD

  6. A song of Ice and Fire

This is much better than that awful hall of faces posters that we had through out season 6.

  7. The song of ice and fire, we are almost at the end. For a teaser poster I kinda like it’s simplicity but at the same time Ice and Fire means so many things in GOT. Looking forward to see what info we get at SXSW

  8. It’s a shame it took them like 10-15 minutes to produce this poster…
    C’mon, just add something…??

  9. This poster is amazing!!!! Ice and fire!!!!! Showed my sister and she just got even more hyped!!!!!!!

  10. Luka Nieto:
    Jack Bauer 24,

Yup. I expected a date too. Let’s cross our fingers for SXSW…

Hopefully! If they were going to announce a date there though, they probably would have had it on the teaser poster.

  11. The night Season 7 premiers in a few months… the summer 2017…

will be an epic evening – the hype and suspense is already happening

Yeah there are not that many new cast members, are there. The only prominent one so far is Jim Broadbent and it’s already known that he is playing an archmaester. The only way a new casting video would interest me is if they announce the actor playing Rhaegar and there’s like 0% chance of that happening lol.

  13. I think this may be my favorite poster since season 1. The last three years they have been awful, speccialy season 4. And that bad photoshop on season 5.

  14. Ivan,

I agree. They were amazing for S1-S3. This strikes me as the perfect visual metaphor for the Song of Ice and Fire, which makes perfect sense to use at this late point in the story. Two thumbs way, way up.

  15. Today a year ago we got the season 6 trailer … now we gotta wait ages for a season 7 trailer ???

  16. I need an extremely hi-res version..it seems to me there is a LOT more going on there then we are seeing in this lo res version.. i am making out at least a couple faces but not clear enough to tell who they are

  17. That’s it! It shows nothing – a complete waste of space! Nothing to get excited about there 🙁

  18. Oh, damn. I just checked in to see if there was an extended discussion on what all the shadows and shapes in the poster signify, like we saw with the bloodstain in the snow after Jon was murdered. 😉

  19. Pigeon:
Well, that’s underwhelming. A solid ‘meh’ out of 10.

Yup, pretty much sums up my reaction.

I’m all for Ice and Fire to finally take center stage, but, goodness, couldn’t they have put a bit more effort into it?? I agree with others, this looks like it was put together by someone’s nephew in 15 minutes, lol.

  20. BunBunStark: Yup, pretty much sums up my reaction.

I’m all for Ice and Fire to finally take center stage, but, goodness, couldn’t they have put a bit more effort into it?? I agree with others, this looks like it was put together by someone’s nephew in 15 minutes, lol.

I keep staring at it in the hope that some sort of optical illusion will spring forth, but I have yet to even find Waldo….

Actually, my first thought was that if we hadn’t already seen Mr.Frosty in front of the flames like in the photo at the top of the article, that’d be a pretty good poster…or maybe too cliche? It’d represent the whole fire and ice theme quite nicely. But people may misinterpret it as Freddy Krueger I suppose. Good lord these migraines need to go away. ?

  21. On the bright side it really feels like things are ramping up now, I would expect the premiere date to be announced very soon and another teaser trailer to follow shortly afterwards. I doubt we will get the full trailer until early May however.

  22. Pigeon: Well, that’s underwhelming. A solid ‘meh’ out of 10. Good wallpaper though!

LOL, I pretty much agree. This is getting annoying, there’s not much to even look over. kind of annoying.

btw, hope you are feeling better than you were the other day.

  23. Ok, so I am a little weird and assumed there would be some sort of easter egg hidden in here.

Only thing I could find (and yes, I do believe it to be a total coincidence and absolutely not meant as a hidden object) was when I duplicated the poster, mirrored it horizontally, inverted both posters en turned it around 180 degrees (like I said, I am kind of weird like that) was a small shape of a wolfshead, in the center, about 100 pixels from the top.

I am one of those people that tries too hard.

Also, I noted there is a small line of text in the bottom.

  24. Saw this poster at the “Game Of Thrones Live Concert Experience” when Ramin Djwadi was introducing the orchestra…for a brief moment it said June 2017…then they took it off the screen and replaced it with Summer 2017…

    Freudian slip perhaps…LOL

  25. (Peers at a high-res version for an hour or so)

    … a always … support … the … the bottom? o_O

  26. Well, I just now noticed this could actually be a sky view of Westeros, where the northern part has been taken by winter and the fire/warmth of the south is battling the cold.

  27. Jonathan Coldrain,
Wow, good spot on the text! I tried zooming in in photoshop but it’s far too blurred to read, although it looks to me like a date followed by writing. Best guess it’s just a line with some copyright legal text. The “© 2017 HBO. All rights reserved” sort of small print (literally!) you get on official stuff. If anyone can find a higher resolution version I might be able to do something more with it.

  28. Lulus Mum,

Oh yeah, and the flames end in a weird circular shape, as if they are going around something. Which probably means nothing at all, just struck me as a bit odd.

  29. Aah, it’s quite the inkblot test! 😀

    First glance: ice and fire.

Then I started seeing all kinds of things. Just “southwest” of the HBO logo there’s someone standing in a dark cloak, seen from above. (Reminds me of LF, ugh! but could be Jon Snow). Bottom right corner could be someone raising an arm. Near the bottom, about a third way through from the left side, the lower part of someone’s face (lips, chin, left cheek). Far right level with the HBO logo, could be someone holding a scroll or some other longish object. Top left corner, several small human figures, crowds. A skull-like thing near the top right corner, also a darker “blob” that could be an ice-spider. Direwolf eye half-way between the “G” and the top… OK, I’m getting a bit carried away and seeing all kinds of things, haha!

Some of the fire seems like someone wielding a torch/flaming sword or similar, the way it traces arcs.

OK, I’ll now go and read what others have found in it! 😀

  30. Eek! I might be a bit weird seeing so many figures and things in it! haha!

Also, it’s quite full of struggle and violence, in an abstract kind of way. I really like it. Also like how the fire isn’t blazing orange but muted, as if behind fog or snowfall.

Near the bottom right, there’s something that could be battlements or a ship, and next to it something that could be raging sea.

All in all, it isn’t a straightforward, in-you-face poster but a violent, confused jumble of indistinct big and small images superimposed onto each other. And no, this could NOT have been done on Paint in a half hour. It will have taken very clever graphic designers days.

  31. Ten Bears,

Hey, the arcing flames on the bottom left and middle quite clearly show viking-type longships with dragon figureheads and all! 😀 (Too bad the show has made Ironborn ships like any other (probably due to budget reasons, and ignorance of naval history) – in the books they’re distinct from the fat-bellied cogs and whatnot the rest of the Seven Kingdoms and the Free Cities use, they’re viking-type longships.)

It’s in the way of looking. I’m a very visual person by nature, and work and hobbies have trained my eye/brain… But seriously, I thought everybody would see the standing cloaked figure just right and below the HBO logo. It’s so obvious.

  32. Tatjana,

Aah! Where do you see the wolves? All I can see for now is one eye sort of lefty middle above the text.

Haha, this is proving quite the inkblot test!

  33. Shy Lady Dragon,

Thank you, for your kind words. I’m more of a student, in the broad sense of the word. I’m actually a pretty bad and impatient teacher when I have to teach things that are “obvious” to me – that’s why I’ve never embraced it as a profession! 🙂

I’m well aware that people’s brains work differently, depending on natural inclination (talent, as it were) and training from early childhood onwards.

I’m naturally a visual person. For instance, to remember things, I attach them to visual images, often quite abstract colours and shapes. It’s just the way I think. Because of this, I’m very sensitive to colours, shapes, images I encounter in real life, and my work and hobbies have enhanced this. There are several well-known visual “gags”, like the “do you see the beautiful young woman or the ugly old crone in this image”. I immediately see both and can freely switch between the two and have a hard time understanding people who only see the one or the other and not the other even when you explain it to them.

Another example is looking leasurely at drifting clouds. Some people see only clouds (or perhaps the type of clouds they are, from a scientific point of view, my dad is one of these), some see maybe map shapes (my brother, who, also as a sailor, is interested in what different cloud formations mean for weather) , others see maps and animals and human shapes/faces, even whole dramas played out. It’s all about letting go of pre-concieved ideas and letting your eyes bring in the visual information and then letting your brain play with it unencumbered, that’s when you see all kinds of things. A bit like I’ve been doing with this GOT poster. I might be seeing things that even aren’t there but it’s fun to play with this bit of visual info.

I fully realise other people don’t think as visually as I do. I’m hopeless with auditory information. Uni lectures, radio shows, podcasts, anything that gets to my brain trough my ears. I’m especially bad at music. I read comments here after each episode, like “Wasn’t it great that the Rains of Castamere was playing during that scene?” and I’m like “Huh? I never noticed that.” And the music, Ramin Diawadi’s brilliant music, is such an important part of the greatness of GOT! 😀

I’m really loving this poster because there’s so much there, and most of all it’s bold, violent, confused… Just like GOT!

  34. talvikorppi,

I usually rely on visual and imagination myself, that’s why I felt so frustrated when the new poster closed in front of my eyes… It seemed as if it refused to disclose any secrets. I guess it’s just disappointment – I expected juicey pieces of actual information.

  35. Mr Derp,

    Ah-ha-haha! Good one!

But sometimes, if you zoom out, you see the bigger picture. You need double-vision, to see the big picture and the small details.

  36. I think it’s a pretty awesome picture. I agree that it doesn’t exactly reveal anything new, but without the set of expectations that are attached to these posters, I think it’s a great shot. A teaser poster should do exactly that…tease. Not give everything away. Hopefully something more substantial will come out sooner rather than later though.

  37. Shy Lady Dragon,

But there’s lots… Well, not actual information apart from confirming “ice and fire” and violent, confused struggle. That’s the message this poster is sending, and, frankly, that’s all they need to reveal about S7 this far out from the season premiere.

I’m loving this poster, it’s visually beautiful, dynamic, love the composition, colours, spatterings, shapes, the ambiguity, the violence and confusion. It’s a piece of art. It’s not an “on-your-nose” immediately obvious thing.

I fail to remember the English language expression/phrase for explaining everything and making it obvious, in my language you talk about “twisting iron wire”, means someone (smarter) twists a bit of iron wire (literally or metaphorically) to explain the thing for someone less clued-up or smart. This poster certainly seems to have left many clamoring for the “iron wire” explanation. There is no explanation, just our imagination and interpretation. I like that.

And I still can’t believe not everybody is seeing the standing figure below and to the right of the “O” in “HBO”. I thought WotW would be discussing whether it’s Jon Snow or somebody else by now! 😀

  38. Apologies to James Taylor:

Just yesterday morning, I was watching a rerun
Shireen, the flames they made put an end to you.
I walked out this morning and felt winter coming on,
I just can’t remember who to send the raven to.

O I’ve seen fire and I’ve seen ice
I’ve seen nasty nights when Ramsey wasn’t nice
In season six the Hound only showed up twice,
But I always knew we’d see Jon Snow again.

  39. Mr Derp,

I agree, this is a teaser poster, it teases us. Ice and fire. We’re teased enough to try and find something more, anything (and I’m finding a lot, hahaha!)

It’s also one of the visually most beautiful GOT posters. There’s almost something Hieronymus Bosch about it.

  40. loco73,

    June 2017 –

    Sunday June 18 2017 – Happy Father’s Day

Game of Thrones Season 7 premiers 1 hour later than usual
    The Leftovers 9:00pm-10:00pm
    Game of Thrones S7 E1 10:00pm-11:00pm

  41. The formal announcement of the S7 premiere date is at 2pm ET. Maybe they’ll release some other tidbits?

  42. ghost of winterfell,

OK, direct your gaze down from the end of the “O” in “HBO”, and a bit to the right. There’s a sort of a triangular orangey bit. That’s the face, seen from obliquely above. The darker bit above it is the hair – can’t tell if it’s Jon Snow type dark locks. The shoulder and the dark cloak runs straight down below the “O”. We’re seeing this figure from above and side-on.

Seriously, I cannot believe everybody isn’t seeing this, it was the first thing I immediately saw. Maybe I’m just weird and totally wrong. shrug.

  43. talvikorppi,

You must have awoken my dormant imagination 😉 The figure you called “standing” seems to me is riding a dragon… The cape covers the dragon’s back, but you can figure its head. Its right ear is pointing to the O in HBO. The person is dark, but the dragon is very pale.

  44. Catspaw Assassin:
O I’ve seen fire and I’ve seen ice
I’ve seen nasty nights when Ramsey wasn’t nice
In season six the Hound only showed up twice,
But I always knew we’d see Jon Snow again.

CA, you are truly the king of understatement! 😀

  45. firstone,

Sunday 24th December, Merry #%& Christmas, Winter is Here. I actually prefer it to be shown during Winter rather than Summer, coincides properly with the setting and tone.

  46. Game of Thrones is such a popular show that they have an announcement about announcing a premiere date. I can’t think of another show doing that. Amazing what a global phenomenon this show has truly become. Awesome.

  47. tyjon:
    firstone,

    tyjon,

I actually share your opinion on this! However, I don’t think I could wait another 9 months for season 7 to premiere. That would just be downright cruel. ha!

  48. Apollo,

    Clob,

    Aaah… aargh!

I want S7 to premier early-mid August because it seems I’ll be away on a sailboat from late June, all through July, getting home and seriously online in early August. Yeah, our boat has satellite broadband wifi but NOT enough to stream GOT. Gaah!

OK, maybe my personal circumstances aren’t that important and I understand people who want S7 as soon as possible. I just want it as late as possible. I can wait. I’ll hate the situation next summer when I can’t see the actual thing as it happens and I’ll get spoiled on the interwebs. Ho-hum, can’t be helped. (Would I turn down a sailing expedition in order to watch GOT as it happens… Uhm. That’s kind of a stupid question.)

  49. ghost of winterfell:
    talvikorppi,

    Shy Lady Dragon,

My imagination must suck, since I can’t make out anything other than vague shapeslol.

    ghost of winterfell,

Same here. I’m not really seeing anything specific in the poster. I’m sure there are a bunch of 15 minute youtube videos coming out in the next day or so that will be overanalyzing every aspect of it, so I’ll just wait for that if anything really is hiding in the poster 🙂

  50. Lulus Mum,

Hail to you, Archmother of Cats! As usual, you’re bringing the fun! But that’s a tough one, what animal could it be?

  51. Shy Lady Dragon:
    talvikorppi,

You must have awoken my dormant imagination ? The figure you called “standing” seems to me is riding a dragon… The cape covers the dragon’s back, but you can figure its head. Its right ear is pointing to the O in HBO. The person is dark, but the dragon is very pale.

Ah, yeah, I can sort of see it now that you’ve explained it. I was stuck in a less fantasy mindset of somebody just standing there, maybe looking at something important.

I like the poster because it’s so open to interpretation – frankly, I’m dissappointed that so few here on WotW have speculated on it and interpreted it.

  52. Shy Lady Dragon,

It’s hard to say. That’s the thing about fantasy, the only limit is your imagination. As this isn’t a spoiler thread I’m going to be very vague, but there is something slightly unusual we are hopefully going to see this series which I am really looking forward to. Fingers crossed for a quick glimpse in the trailer, whenever we get it.

  53. Mr Derp,

I’m actually seeing all kinds of things in the poster. Nothing that confirms any storylines, though. Just general crowds, human figures wielding swords, whatever. I don’t need to make everybody see the same things I do. I’m probably seeing things the designers of this poster didn’t even mean to be there, lol!

That said, to me a couple of things seem so obvious, so easy to spot, that they must mean something. The graphic designers aren’t hiding them much. The glaring example is Jon Snow/maybe LF/maybe someone else standing there, below the HBO logo. And I’m becoming ever more convinced that it’s a direwolf eye (some have even seen a wolf head) top middle.

Most of all, I like this poster.

  54. talvikorppi,

Well dammit, I wanna see it too! You’re teasin me more than the poster LOL
*Schedules appointment to get eyes checked immediately* 🙂

  55. Shy Lady Dragon,
You are a genius my dear! I think Cersei might have killed him because she was so envious of its amazing blue featheryness. In fact, that’s why she hated them all, nothing to do with being nearly forced to marry Loras, Marg taking her boys away, Olenna having none of her nonsense etc. Just pure hat envy. It can make a person do terrible things!

  56. Mr Derp,

Haha, I’m not trying to tease you or anybody. I’m just amazed that people aren’t seeing the things I am. I thought I was sort of average and it turns out I’m seeing way more than anybody here on WotW.

The important point is that I’m not trying to interpret these things I see as explanations of S7 storylines. As some youtubers you refer to might. No, I take this lovely poster as a general depiction of S7. Fire and ice, struggle, violence, confusion.

But still… How can not everybody see the dark-haired, dark-cloaked figure standing below the “O” in HBO? That was the first thing I saw. So obvious, so clear. Jeeez…

  57. This poster reminds me, why hasn’t there been a GOT hidden object game?

Guess I’ll have to do it meself (he also said two unfinished HOG projects ago).

    Lulus Mum,

    Thanks Mum! 😉

  58. Shy Lady Dragon:
    talvikorppi,

I’m afraid we are just playing now, and the poster, although visually pleasing, isn’t meant to predict anything.

Yeah, I don’t think it’s meant to predict anything. Just give a feel of the upcoming season. Flurry, blurry, vague, confused, struggling, violent. Yep, that’s GoT.

They don’t want to give out anything more specific this far out from the premiere.

  59. Don’t care for it at all. Holds absolutely no intrigue, nor does it provoke any excitement for me. Hopefully another poster that does will be released soon.

  60. Huh, nice visual image of the Ice and Fire. Of course, at this point, all people need to know is when the show resumes.

  61. Mr Derp:
If you zoom in close enough you can see the second gunman on the grassy knoll.

    Excellent comment 😀

The only way I may possibly seeing anything lurking in that poster is after taking a good long hit from the hash pipe! The art is sort of reminiscent of LP covers from the 1960/70’s. Probably many of the artists were stoned when they designed them so one has to be in similar state of mind to interpret them 🙂

  62. Thronetender: LOL, I pretty much agree. This is getting annoying, there’s not much to even look over. kind of annoying.

btw, hope you are feeling better than you were the other day.

Thank you, today was better! I’m getting a spinal tap tomorrow (sadly not the movie!), so I might be able to see some interesting things in the poster if I get a low pressure headache! ?

    Shy Lady Dragon:
    Pigeon,

I think it would make a nice T-shirt.

It would. Even a shower curtain, because hot/cold!

  63. I will be at SXSW as I live in Austin. I only hope to survive the mayhem to the end. The pedicabbers will be out in force. The only redeeming quality about those cockroaches will be all the GOT posters on the back of them lol.

  64. Ser Broccoli McBroccoliface,

UUUGGGHHH, so jealous!!! My dad lives in Austin, but he could care less about fantasy. I do, however, get to go to the very last Concert Experience (in Portland on April 2) with my daughter and one of her best friends, and we’re going to meet up with at least one other person from WotW!

If anyone is going to the Portland show and might be interested in dinner/cocktails beforehand, feel free to drop me a line at braziliangog at yahoo dot com.
