We may be in the off-season, but the news just keep on coming: the Game of Thrones season seven box-sets will arrive quite soon, first for digital download on September 25, and then for Blu-Ray and DVD on December 12. Read below the cut for the details!
IGN just revealed the date, along with all the information about the bonus features.
As usual, the digital and Blu-Ray versions bring some exclusives not available on DVD. The download will feature the bonus “Creating the North and Beyond,” a behind-the-scenes look at the creation of the Frozen Lake in “Beyond the Wall.” The Blu-Ray will include in-episode guides and seven “Histories and Lore” animated features, including “The Dragonpit,” “Highgarden,” “Prophecies of the Known World,” and “The Rains of Castamere,” among others, narrated by Nikolaj Coster-Waldau, Aidan Gillen, and others.
Both the Blu-ray and DVD versions will feature the following bonuses:
- Conquest & Rebellion: An Animated History of the Seven Kingdoms — Cast members Pilou Asbæk (Euron Greyjoy), Nikolaj Coster-Waldau (Jaime Lannister), Aidan Gillen (Littlefinger), Conleth Hill (Varys), Harry Lloyd (Viserys Targaryen), and Sophie Turner (Sansa Stark) narrate an animated series focusing on Aegon Targaryen’s attempts to conquer the Seven Kingdoms, written by Dave Hill.
- From Imagination to Reality: Inside the Art Departmen — This 2-part featurette details production designer Deborah Riley and her department’s work, dissecting the process behind the creation of this season’s incredible new sets, including Dragonstone, Casterly Rock, Highgarden, the Dragonpit, and more.
- Fire & Steel: Creating the Invasion of Westeros — This BTS feature dives into the season’s biggest moments via interviews with the cast and crew.
- Audio Commentaries — Each episode will feature commentaries with various cast and crew members, such as David Benioff, D.B. Weiss, Jacob Anderson, Gwendoline Christie, Liam Cunningham, Kit Harington and Lena Headey.
Also, IGN offers a preview of Conquest & Rebellion: An Animated History of the Seven Kingdoms, focusing on its first chapter: Valyria’s Last Scion: House Targaryen.
Just like in the case of season six, the Blu-Rays are coming early this year. In just a few months, we will have season seven in our hands, as well as all those juicy extras!
Derp!
I’m waiting for the entire series after S8 on Ultra HD 4K Bluray. No sense buying in parts.
Oh Gods, please don’t let that be the cover of the bluray.
Ah someone tell me who is doing each audio commentary??
Ok, I’ll be the one to ask. Why don’t you like that option for the cover?
I’m still hoping Season 8 is aired in 4K HDR or available to stream in 4K HDR
I don’t like this image nearly as much as I liked the season poster (that was much creepier; this is, dare I say, a bit cheesy), but the cover art isn’t going to be a deciding factor in whether or not I will buy this season on Blu-Ray. Honestly, at this point, I’m waiting for the deluxe complete series set.
Jenny,
The small number of cast members listed on the news release would suggest to me that this will be heavy on crew and light on actors.
Sean C.,
Well in the ign article it says and more so I am holding on to that lol.Anyway in previous years they disclosed them all so I don’t get the change.
I don’t think the cover is too bad, but I do prefer the half-face pic in the season poster and I figured that’s what they were going to use for it. Isn’t that how they’ve done it with the other seasons?
Either way, I’m also waiting until the box set for the whole series is released. I’m sure HBO will have something special planned for it. Expensive, of course. But still special.
My dad likes to get the season sets when they come out, so the timing will make this a good Christmas present.
My only hope is that they’ll go back to the style of Seasons 1-5, because the package for S6 was subpar at best. I didn’t like it.
Yeah, I think I’ll be buying this. Just a feeling. 😉
I’ve been rewatching Season 7 over the past week, and it plays even better as a complete unit than it did on a week-to-week basis (which was still pretty damn great). I expect that I’ll be doing another rewatch in December once this beauty arrives.
The special features all look great as well.
1. I agree the packing for season 6 wasn’t good. It felt cheap.
2. I am only upgrading my absolute favorites to 4K. So if this series ever comes out in 4k… I am certainly buying it.
3. I will be waiting for the Blu-ray set instead of the digital download. It seems like once a week my internet gets sketchy and having a back up disc is great. Besides, the discs come with a digital download too.
Yeah, I was unable to buy in past years, mostly because I didn’t have the means to watch in HD. Now, that we’re in the home stretch, as it were, I’m holding off buying until after the series concludes, when I’m sure HBO will pull out all the stops to create a complete 4K series special edition that will be expensive, but worth it anyway. Maybe a Dragon egg chest extravaganza?
Wishlisted’
It seems there will not be any deleted scenes. Strange since Isaac Hempsthead Wright told there was a scene in which Sansa asked him for help about the Littlefinger-Arya issue. There was also evidence back in November of the little birds filming a scene in Seville, at least Frances, the dwarf girl.
yesss! Digital Download as a ten day later birthday present. Thanks HBO 😀 😀
That is a pretty terrible cover… Looks like they just flipped the poster asset to make a full face and tweaked the highlights and shadows. NK appears WAY too symmetrical here.
Viz,
doesnt look symmetrical if you look a bit harder, i dont think the two sides of the face are a mirror image
Already pre ordered Series 1-7 in Blue Ray as I already have in dvd format so they are going to a Thrones friend. Now all I need is a Blue Ray player before 11th December. What with everything else I’ve bought over the years this obsession is costing me a fortune lol
What? So they filmed how many deleted scenes, and none of them are in the dvd or blu Ray? What? Just killed off any anticipation I had for the dvd release
So much complaining
Complaining about complaining puts you on equal footing with the rest of us complainers lol
Nice try, but my statement isn’t complaining at all.
No? Passive aggressive complaining is still complaining lol
Love the History and Lore stuff – part of the reason to buy the blu ray’s tbh.
Dan,
It doesn’t sound like you understand what complaining or passive aggression actually means. Either that, or you’re just looking to pick a fight on the internet.
If I state that it’s either cold or hot outside…it doesn’t mean I’m complaining about it. It’s stating a fact. This is no different than the comment I made.
Now, if I say oh fuck, it’s cold outside, this is going to ruin my day, etc..etc…then yes, that would be complaining.
Get the difference?
Passive aggression implies that there’s some aggression to begin with. What I said was not aggressive at all. Simply stating that a number of people were complaining is not aggressive or intending to be.
On the other hand, making a point to try and convince me Im complaining while adding “lol” at the end of every accusation, well, there’s your passive aggression.
Anyway, I can’t wait for season 7 to come out on Blue-Ray. I kind of want to wait for the entire package to be released as others have already stated, but I don’t know if I can wait another 2 years to buy season 7, so I may have to give myself a Christmas gift this year 🙂
Ah. So not passive aggressiveness then, simply stating a fact for reasons only known to you, but what’s unfortunate is literally the only reason to make such a comment was to gain some form of virtual attention, which is kinda worse, atleast people with passive aggressive tendencies in their comments tend to get to some sort of valid point by the end of their comment, but “so much complaining”, that’s just a cry for attention, to deny that is to deny a fact of life LOL 😉
Lol, they don’t even use Furdik’s version of the NK for the cover of the season he was in.
Digital downloads are great, but I am always a sucker for the tangible, physical box set. It’s the only television series that I buy every year. Sometimes I never even use them, I just like to collect them and have the artwork, physical discs, etc. This is what happens when CDs and then DVDs were still a new phenomenon when you were a child. 😉
Dan,
Ah, so the answer is both then. I’ll tell you what. While you sit here and complain about Game of Thrones not providing you with enough extras on the season 7 blue-ray and finding ways to keep this pathetic argument going, I’ll go and enjoy my day. Bye bye.
I’m really hoping either Rhaegar (Wilf Scolding) or Lyana (Aisling Franciosi) get to narrate one of the histories and lore chapter. I would love it if Rhaegar in particular narrated something regarding the history of his house. It would be fitting since he was such an avid reader.
Pigeon,
Lol, Im kind of the same way. Sometimes unwrapping the package is one of the funnest parts!
Stating facts isnt complaining.
Xmas list complete!
Ryan,
I personally don’t see HBO releasing Game Of Thrones on 4K UHD anytime soon because from my understanding the show wasn’t filmed in 4K and to upscale and digital remaster a show of this magnitude would be expensive because 4K UHD is still very new technology and I’m certain HBO doesn’t want to dish out that kind of money right now for something that majority of consumers don’t have yet. But I could be wrong.
Mr Derp,
Yes it is.
I’m saving for the moment that the entire set of 8 seasons appears in 8k, in 2020.
salacious crumb,
No, please, don’t get that discussion started again. It was entirely pointless the first time around 🙂
Mr Derp,
Damn it, Mr. D. I was starting to enjoy your logic vs. his whinging. (And yes, this comment was in part an excuse to use the word “whinge” or “whinging.”)
LastKiss,
Maybe it’s just the unnatural lighting I can’t get over then. In any event it makes his nose look way too pointed and his eyes appear cat-like to me.
1. Were you beaten by a period as a child, or are you just in love with commas?
2. Why did you use the word “literally”?
Ten Bears,
Lol, thanks -s- I didn’t enjoy any of it though.
I came in here all excited about the new season coming out on blue-ray soon and then I noticed that half the comments were nitpicking about how there isn’t enough of this or that. I was……simply surprised about how much “whinging” was going on. That’s it. Then it turned into a debate about who’s complaining vs. who’s not complaining and I just had enough. It’s not worth the time and I’m not engaging in this debate again.
nicnavfer,
Annette Hannah who played Frances has been told there will be deleted scenes….which include her scene that was cut. There was a character name change.
I don’t know the technology but I know that George Lucas better not be able to get his hands on this and do some “enhancing.”
At any rate, I think I know what I’m getting for xmas this year!
Lena Headey will be doing some of the narration. That is excellent news. She has a fantastic voice, and her past commentaries have always been delightful. She’s such a great fangirl of the show. And she’s been a wonderful role model and mentor for Maisie Williams.
I’d recommend the episode commentaries for S4e10 and S6e10 featuring Lena Headey.
Morgoth,
I was about to comment something similar. Season 1-4 packaging is great, but the quality of packaging in season 5 and 6 is noticably down.
Lol who the fuck are you? If you can answer me that, then sure il happily oblige you with some answers, but until you let me know you are someone I need to answer with justifications, I will simply find you’re attempt to jump to ones aid mildly amusing and carry on with my day 🙂
Please about this, can ask the wife to get me the Blu-Ray for Christmas now to go with the other six and it helps makes the long wait until the second half of next year that little easier to take.
Ps. I love the History and Lore stuff on the Blu-Ray so much great stuff.
