Watchers on the Wall News: Welcome to two new contributors!

Raven LogoWe’re barely a week old, Watchers, and what a week it’s been! Thank you to each and every one of you who has joined the site and made this an exciting time. It’s been wonderful to see the site embraced by familiar members of the Game of Thrones fan community and by new people too.

We’ve had our technical hiccups here and there, and we appreciate everyone’s patience as we sort issues out. The site is still in progress in some areas, and so your suggestions are just as valuable as ever. We’ll provide a more thorough update on the technical aspects in a few days, after we’ve taken care of a few more things we’ve got our eye on. Keep the feedback coming!

Now, onto the fun news. We’ve been looking to expand the WotW team, and will continue to do so over the next couple months. Tonight, we’re introducing two new writers who’ll be contributing to Watchers On The Wall: Shylah and Cian.

Shylah's AvatarShylah is a fan who took the path of falling in love with Game of Thrones first, and ASOIAF later. She has a wealth of experience when it comes to covering news from the fan point-of-view and is always hungry for fresh info, analysis and theories.

You can find Shylah on Twitter, sharing her enthusiasm for many fandoms.

CianCian, our next new contributor, will be familiar to many of you from his work at HBO Watch, where his passion has always been Game of Thrones. A native of Ireland, Cian’s been a fan of the books and the show since the first season. When it comes to Westerosi loyalties, he’s a sworn supporter of The Mannis, doubly so now that he’s on the Wall amongst us Watchers.

Cian will be bringing you scoops and reporting breaking news for WotW. Check him out on Twitter.

Since we’re talking contributors, we can confirm for you as well: Bex is now a full-time Watcher, and no longer writing for any other Game of Thrones websites.

We’re very excited for the coming weeks. We have some things in the works, involving you the readers, and you’ll hear more about that shortly, possibly as soon as tomorrow.

For now, follow the Watchers on the Wall Facebook page and Twitter for updates and to stay abreast of the latest news.

Thank you again, and help us welcome our new Watchers, Shylah and Cian, into the fold!

  1. What no gratuitous bewb picture of Shyla in a tight shirt? Hasn’t Fansided taught you guys anything?

Anywho, my lady box says welcome to the newbies.

  2. Thanks for the warm welcome everyone! I am super excited to take the black, and join this esteemed crew!

  3. Rygar,

The official WotW photoshoot isn’t until tomorrow morning. We couldn’t find a wind machine to rent before then. :/

  4. Hello WotW writers (new and old). Since this site is still young and there has been news prior to you guys starting up here, I was wondering if you could do a “Season 5: What we know so far” post including all the stuff that was revealed before and after this site started. I know from comments there is an old site where I might find that stuff, but by the sound of it I don’t really want to go there. Having it all here would be a good thing.

That’s a great idea, actually. I’ve been putting together a filming schedule of what we already know for my own use, so this dovetails nicely with that. Thanks for the suggestion!

aoo: could fix the RSS feed please?

I’ve talked about this with Oz, and he says he’s planning to work on this one immediately. We’ll keep you posted.

  6. Rygar,

    W–

    I–

Great. Because what I need right now is a Rygar/Shylah (Rylah? Shygar?) double-team keeping me on my toes.

(mutter) Team-ups like that aughtta be illegal.

  7. Sue the Fury: That’s a great idea, actually.I’ve been putting together a filming schedule of what we already know for my own use, so this dovetails nicely with that. Thanks for the suggestion!

Thanks, glad you like the idea. You could even make it a regular thing (start of every month maybe?) Just gathering up all the bits of news in that time and putting it together. Or not. It’s up to you obviously.

    I am Of the Night.

  8. Welcome to WotW new writers, I’m sure you’ll fit right in. BTW, the site is looking great, I have only experienced a few bugs but they have been fixed. Keep on the great work guys!

  9. Yes, welcome new friends

And this site is motivated by love and appreciation for Game of Thrones and no other, baser, considerations, so I’m just happy to be here!

  10. I’m a bit late, but I have to welcome in the new writers and the website in general. I have mostly stopped reading comment sections and fan-forums, but I never stopped coming to WiC and I’m happy the minds behind that site have found a new home. I’ll definitely be following you guys in the future.

  11. I will be interested to read the new contributors’ comments. Actually, I am trying to woo myself away from “Game of Thrones” (not in a nasty way). I have things like jobs that have to be done on the house that I can’t procrastinate about awaiting me in the real world. I might look in on the site once a week or something like that rather than every day. I don’t want to condemn t’other place too much – it was the silly pop-up votes that did my head in more than anything, though I did used to look in there and post the odd comment before I found out about this site. By the way, I said this at t’other place and apologised, but I don’t know if the people behind this site look in there any longer. I thought “Ours is the Fury” was a gentleman rather than a lady for a long time (“Ours” and Sue are the same person?) So sorry Sue for getting that wrong.

  12. Nice to see how this site is coming along perfectly.

    Welcome to the new contributors!

I’m looking forward to the ‘what we know so far’ post too.

  13. Welcome to the Wall where murderers, thieves, rapists and mopey bastards fight side by side to defend the Realm 🙂

  14. Huge welcome to you guys !

Keep the flame burning against the cold for the night is dark and full of terrors !

  15. Of the Night: Thanks, glad you like the idea. You could even make it a regular thing (start of every month maybe?) Just gathering up all the bits of news in that time and putting it together. Or not. It’s up to you obviously.

    I am Of the Night.

I like the idea, but maybe just a “category” category right next to home where each important tag gets listed with just their title.

A write-up would of coure be awesome, but why double up on much of the work?

Anyways, looking forward to anything 😉

EDIT: Have you thought of a “indentured comment structure” where all the answers to one comment get listed just below (and may even be downsized by a click). Much better oversight in my opinion.

  16. Hi everyone, and thanks for the warm welcome! I’m absolutely delighted to be a part of this fine group of lads and lasses 🙂

    All Hail the Wolf Girl:
Céad míle fáilte Cian and Shylah ( and Bex too!)

    I like you already!

  17. Welcome!

And thanks again to everyone at WotW for this site. It is a pleasure to read quality GOT content (that is, articles that are about casting/filming and not make-up) while avoiding a multitude of ads.

    Long may you reign!

  18. Congratulations to the new contributers. This site is going from strength to strength in it’s short life so far.

Was wondering if there were any plans to have some sort of fantasy casting segment over the summer? I think a lot of people (unless it’s just me!) enjoy having a think about who they would cast for certain characters when/if they turn up in the show.

  19. I come from the internetless wilds of annual vacation, and there are all those news. Well. I am absolutely pleased with how things came out to be honest and I hope you guys are enjoying yourselves as much as I enjoy the new site.

And while it’s my first post over here, I hope I am still allowed to welcome the new contributors and wish them the most amazing of runs

  20. Welcome, new contributors! I’m very happy with what’s happened at WotW in the short time it has been around, and I’m sure you will do your part in improving it even further.

  21. TheTouchOfFrost,

There’s no indication that the show is casting any more major roles. There’s still a chance they’ll get a couple more characters in the North (since it seems impossible that they’ll manage without new castings there and since they only start filming in autumn) but the Greyjoys are probably out and no one knows about the Griffs.

I guess we could do one for Manderly (even though he could be cut as well) but that’s about it.

  22. Sue the Fury,

Sue- You guys have always been so wonderful about interaction with us. How about a monthly activity where you all would pick a random regular poster and they could opt to contribute an article (with your approval and editing, of course). Think it would be interesting to get other perspectives on things. Also, can we ever get a guest contribution from Winter Phil? Just a couple suggestions and thanks for everything.

  23. jentario,

Well I suppose it could be theoretical casting…which it would have been anyway really. Don’t think we can confirm who is definately in and out yet and I’m certain that the current cast aren’t going to be it for the rest of the show. Although I can see it not being as worthwhile venture as for the other seasons as I think we’re less sure of who’s actually going to make it in. If they cut both the Greyjoys and the Griffs (hoping both stay in to be honest!) then it’s going to move into being unrecognisable from the books. Having seen what happens to anime when it gets ahead of the manga, I’m worried but hey ho, we shall see what happens. Hopefully it’ll work whatever they do.

  24. Well in my opinion if the greyjoy’s aren’t cast this season they are definitely out of the story. As the battle for mereen is quite likely being finished this season.

Griff can be stalled to the sixth season though, instead of having his whole ship adventure (which isn’t interesting in my opinion) he can start from the moment he actually does something, landing in westeros.

Hope my spoiler tags worked, I tried to keep everything as vague as possible indeed it does not so I have some time to fix it. ^^

  25. davy,

I remember a post on WIC where a director I think, said there wouldn’t be any major battles this year. Maybe someone can confirm seeing this post as well.

  26. Axechucker:
    Rygar,

    W–

    I–

Great. Because what I need right now is a Rygar/Shylah (Rylah? Shygar?) double-team keeping me on my toes.

(mutter) Team-ups like that aughtta be illegal.

Was that consent for a double team? For the record, I’m not talking about ‘in a sept next to the body of your dead son’ kind of consent.

  27. Ragman’s Harbor,

Hmm, when would they do the siege of mereen then? Season 6 ep 4?

It can also be that it’s a toned down version from the book version and it’s more like the purple wedding by just taking an half hour. Ideally all you need is the initial attack of the Yunkai to be shown, then *TWOW* the defense orchistrated by Barristan and ultimately the arrival of the greyjoys, each scene just needs 5 minutes in my opinion so it can be resolved in 15 to 20 minutes. What also can happen is that they spread it out over multiple episodes (which would be an interesting change of pace for once). In this case episode 5 could be Daznak’s pit, episode 6 barristan’s coup, episode 7 the yunkai attack, episode 8 the defence and episode 9 the greyjoys arriving. With episode 10 being us finding out that Daenarys is alive and being found by Dothraki. I think a setup like this would be very enjoyable for the siege of Mereen, atleast for me. I think having all this in one episode wouldn’t do the battle that well.

  28. davy,

I guess this will all depend on whether

Euron and/or Victarion are introduced this season

. I don’t think the siege of Mereeen would work without them and also be hard to carry off as a feature length episode with only

Selmy, Daario, Missandei, Grey Worm and potentially Yezzan and Hizdahr zo Loraq

to represent both sides of the conflict. I’d say only

    Barrsitan

is a strong enough character to build it around.
    Who knows though.

Tyrion still needs to get to the right part of the world and possibly encounter the Griffs, Quentyn/Trystane surely can’t make it with him being involved in Dorne and Dany still needs to have the scene where she buggers off on Drogon. Not forgetting the whole Pale Mare issue and also Jorah and even Penny meeting and becoming slaves with Tyrion

The whole plot seems to be up in the air at this point which I find worrying.

  29. I’d like to extend a warm welcome to the new contributers, Shylah and Cian! And congratulations to Bex for joining Watchers on the Wall full-time!

It may have only been a week since the new site launched, but damn has it been an exciting and fun one! Casting news, filming news, speculation, and good-old-fashioned nerding out over Game of Thrones and A Song of Ice Fire. Bliss.

If we can all keep this level of engagement up, then the long, dark offseason should fly by!

  30. Ragman’s Harbor,

Not exactly true. The fact that Neil Marshall wasn’t approached in season 5 likely means there’s no big battle episode (as in, Blackwater and the Wall episodes). There could still definitely be battle scenes, but not focused, full episode battles.

Remember season 3? There was the battle of Yunkai in episode 9 alongside a bunch of other things. In season one there were two battles in episode 9, in season 2 there was one early on that wasn’t a big scene… Point is, there could still be a battle or two in season 5 as long as they don’t take a full episode.

  31. A warm welcome to all of you! Get some bread and salt, and get ready to get stabbed to death immediately afterwards. 😀

  32. Welcome to the new additions to WotW contributors an staff. The site is sure growing 🙂

    Of the Night,

Darkstar! Pfft, I knew you were not cut I don’t care what they said.

  33. Best wishes to Shylah and Cian – it’s been exciting lurking around these parts these past few days, like watching history unfolding or something…! 😉

  34. viki:
IF you love Sansa so much you have to inject her into everything, maybe think about it first… there are a lot of interesting characters – and if a topic is started to talk about one of them, maybe don’t always bring up Sansa, or feel the need to defend an obviously bait or troll – you might be doing your favorite a disservice. Sometimes it is best to agree to disagree to an argument that really has no ‘right’ answer.

Because some Sansa’s fanboys cleraly can’t accept that her character is not what they expected her to be.

The problem is, there are many of us, who liked her storyline in S5. Everyone has right to think about her whatever they want, but the way they are spakiking about hŁŁłstoryline (idiotic, nonsensical, …) is offence for every fan of S5.

If you call her storyline idiotic, that clerly means that eveyrone who likes her is an idiot.
