Welcome back to Game of Threads! For those that are new to this, Game of Threads is a weekly (I’m hoping) recap of the beautiful costuming in the Game of Thrones franchise, focusing now on House of the Dragon. As a fashion designer, costumer, and fantasy enthusiast, I’ll be giving my two cents on what the characters wore and why designer Jany Temime might have chosen those particular styles for them to wear.
House of the Dragon has brought the dragons back to our world! And, if you know your A Song of Ice and Fire lore, you know their return means the rebirth of magic, including the dragonglass candles with which the learned can communicate at a distance. After a five year hiatus, our Glass Candle Dialogues are back as Luka and I discuss the very first episode of House of the Dragon: favorite characters, hopes for the future, dragon dreams, and that birth scene.
What is it that makes the Thrones fandom experience so unique and addicting? What is it that brought us all together as a community more than ten years ago and kept us together through all the ups and downs? And what is it that brings us back together now, at the dawn of a new series? No, it’s not dragons. It’s YOU! Yeah, you. And you and you. Game of Thrones cultivated a massive social media presence, with the show and the fandom feeding into one another joyfully. That frenzy resumed this week online, with Twitter flooded with #HouseoftheDragon tweets. People were nitpicking, comparing episode portions to Game of Thrones, debating each other furiously…my timeline was a mess. It was glorious. It’s good to be back, because we love this world that George R.R. Martin has created and seeing it brought to life one more time, under new hands, gives us another reason to come together and have fun with our friends online.
Our beloved Axechucker has retired and is enjoying the show from the spectator seats so that leaves me to pick up the gauntlet. So with that said, what did the masses think of the episode? Twitter had thoughts. Many many thoughts.

We’ve all been wondering if the new Targaryen dragons of House of the Dragon would land with a splash or a thud, after the controversial finale of Game of Thrones left fans swearing off Westeros for good. Would audiences tune in for a show containing no beloved GoT characters? We now have the answer: hell yeah they will! And in record-setting numbers, it turns out.
The Hollywood Reporter broke the news today that the series premiere brought in “nearly 10 million viewers across all platforms in the United States” per HBO, making it the biggest series premiere in HBO history.
