The Hairs of the Dragon: HOTD Series Premiere Twitter Recap!

fire tweetWhat is it that makes the Thrones fandom experience so unique and addicting? What is it that brought us all together as a community more than ten years ago and kept us together through all the ups and downs? And what is it that brings us back together now, at the dawn of a new series? No, it’s not dragons. It’s YOU! Yeah, you. And you and you. Game of Thrones cultivated a massive social media presence, with the show and the fandom feeding into one another joyfully. That frenzy resumed this week online, with Twitter flooded with #HouseoftheDragon tweets. People were nitpicking, comparing episode portions to Game of Thrones, debating each other furiously…my timeline was a mess. It was glorious. It’s good to be back, because we love this world that George R.R. Martin has created and seeing it brought to life one more time, under new hands, gives us another reason to come together and have fun with our friends online.

Our beloved Axechucker has retired and is enjoying the show from the spectator seats so that leaves me to pick up the gauntlet. So with that said, what did the masses think of the episode? Twitter had thoughts. Many many thoughts.

(Let the post load. It’s a lot of tweets. Not kidding. Many many thoughts!)

FIRST, a bit of HOTD pre-gaming…

Only Dany knows. Knew.

Who can compare with the mighty Mord? “NO GOLD!” indeed.

Vanessa hon, you were never off it.

Same. And guess what? Turns out people do still want more tits and dragons.

*cough* Those people exist.

Close enough! Because psych. Cold open, and no credits this week, folks. Just the Great Council of 101 AC. (Ask your nerd book friends.) And GOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!

Daemon and Rhaenyra have a chat but honestly all anyone had eyes for, as usual, was for the Iron Throne. It is spectacular!

I have some news for you regarding the Targaryens….all of them.

Yep. Classic Targaryen dragon dream- it came true, in a terrible way.

Prince Daemon and his City Watch goldcloaks got up to some truly disgusting shenanigans in the premiere. Love or hate Daemon, Matt Smith is incredible.

’nuff said.

Onto the night’s main event: the Heir’s Tourney. AKA Counting Your Dragon Egg Before They’ve Hatched.

If you had a feeling the baby-birth wasn’t going to go well for the nice queen lady, here’s a cookie. And also a blindfold, because this is going to be awful.

Viserys and the Small Council face a tough decision now. Choose between a violent prick or a woman, for the next heir. Hmm tough call. It takes them way too long to make a decision. But really the most important bit-

We wouldn’t have these problems if they’d chosen Rhaenys to begin with. (Corlys is thinking that but he’s probably right.)

Otto and Alicent Hightower have a father-daughter moment that quickly dissolves into what-the-fuckery.

Daemon gets rightly called out by Viserys for talking shit:

Debate over- Rhaenyra is the new heir of the dragon, and she gets to hear the fancy-schmancy secrets, which may sound familiar…

Of course everyone on Twitter is still arguing over whether Dany or Jon was the Targaryen who united the realm against the cold. So, ya know, business as usual!

The GoT theme music at the end got everyone jacked up in a good way.

Two days later and everyone is still digesting, reeling, processing and debating. Some final thoughts?

Yep, collective trauma, that’s why we’re here. And dragons.

That wraps up our Twitter recap for the series premiere. You can read my regular review over yonder, and make sure to enter our awesome giveaway for the Secretlab TITAN Evo 2022 House of the Dragon Edition Chair!

  1. I hope Axey is enjoying retirement. Long may he reign. And thanks Sue for taking up the gauntlet of the Twitter roundup! It’s always been a fave. I’m glad I wasn’t the only one who thought ACAB during the Gold Cloaks scene lol, AGCAB, maybe? Also thanks to that twitter user who pointed out the vulva parallel with the dragon pit. I totally missed that and it was appropriate given Aemma’s condition.

  2. I am so excited the twitter posts are back! I love the hell out of all of you funny people. I can’t wait to read this but sadly work comes first this morning.

  3. I’ve always imagined the opening score of House of the dragon to be the song S06E10 of GoT ends with. (When Theon looks at the flag….that song).
Now, they did use it for the end credits, but the second part of it. I would use the first part of that song for the opening credits.
