Con of Thrones 2021 Cancelled

con of thrones banner

We are saddened to report that, due to the ongoing pandemic, Mischief Management has made the difficult decision to cancel Con of Thrones 2021.

While Mischief Management is confident that the increase in
vaccination rates and preventative measures continue to make it safer for groups to gather, ongoing international travel restrictions and other contributing factors make it such that hosting Con of Thrones at the
level that the community has come to expect would be impossible in the scheduled time frame.

Tickets purchased for Con of Thrones 2020 and 2021 will be automatically refunded. All tickets, including autograph, photograph, and workshop experience tickets will be sent for refund processing by August 6, 2021. Refunds will include the cost of the ticket, ticket platform fees, and any mailing fees. If you selected to insure your tickets, this was paid directly to the ticket insurance company and will not be refunded. Vendors will be contacted directly from our Vendors Team. If you have any questions, please reach out to [email protected].

Previously reserved hotel accommodations at the Hyatt Regency Orlando, the official partner hotel of Con of Thrones, have been automatically cancelled. You will receive (or may have already received) an email confirming your reservation cancellation. Please note that it may take up to 7 business days for your reservation to be cancelled. Due to limited staffing at the hotel, you are asked not to reach out directly until these 7 days have passed.

As for new health/safety guidelines at future events, the health and safety of everyone attending Mischief Management events is their top priority. Additional details about the new health and safety measures for events will be made available in the future.

Mischief Management is hard at work reimagining Con of Thrones for the future, looking at alternative dates and locations so that we can gather again to celebrate. For additional information, please visit ConOfThrones.net. As Mischief Management is a small event company that has been significantly impacted by COVID-19, they truly appreciate your cooperation as they minimize the financial impact so that we can all continue to celebrate together for many years to come.

  1. Unfortunately, I think this is a good idea considering the rising concern and spread of variant strains. I am sorry to everyone who was looking forward to this and bought tickets with the hope that our 1.5 year struggle with COVID will finally have ended by this summer šŸ™ This is a real bummer.

  2. Adrianacandle,

    Not to get political,

but this is all the fault of our doofus Florida governor, who pushed a law forbidding Florida businesses from asking customers for ā€œvaccination passports.ā€ Itā€™s the reason cruise ships are in court contesting the law, because the only way to ensure passenger safety is to require proof of vaccination. He also ā€œopened upā€ the state despite the vaccination rate being nowhere near the 70% threshold. Lovely. Just lovely. Politicizing public health.

Now no Con of Thrones as a result.šŸ˜”
    End rant.

  3. I’m so sad to not see everyone once again but I’d rather everyone be safe and healthy! We’ll be back again next time around with House of the Dragon and maybe a new location? What do you all think? The cancellation means a clean slate. Where do you want the con to be in the future?

  4. Squaring off the dropping vaccination rate and the rise of the new Delta variant, possibly a smart decision. We are far from done yet.

  5. Sue the Fury,

I miss everyone, too! Denver would be a more central location for US residents and also has a major airport with many flights for those traveling from other countries.

  6. Too bad. I figured this would happen, though, to the point I never bothered buying 2021 tickets after getting the refund for 2020. I’ll forever lobby for Dallas, of course, since I don’t need a hotel and can walk to any downtown location, but anywhere in the US works.

  7. Probably wise. Looking forward to attending in a future year safely! Maybe with HotD or dare I say TWoW to discuss!!! I always have a blast and will be back! Thanks to the organizers, I’m sure it’s been stressful.

  8. Adrianacandle,

ā€ā€¦ I am sorry to everyone who was looking forward to this and bought tickets with the hope that our 1.5 year struggle with COVID will finally have ended by this summer šŸ™ā€

ā€¢ In Florida, our 1.5 year struggle with Covid should have ended already.

While people all over the world are dying – literally – to get access to the vaccine, a sizable chunk of our stateā€™s population refuse to get vaccinated, and still think that the virus is a hoax or is no worse than a mild cold, or that the vaccines are: (a) unproven; (b) magnetize your face; (c) contain tracking nano-chips; (d) an infringement on ā€œfreedom and liberty;ā€ (e) render you or those around you infertile; and (f) [fill in latest conspiracy theory].

Thanks to anti-vax, anti-mask propaganda spread by morons, amplified by cable ā€œnewsā€ and Facebook, and codified into law by Gov. Joffrey,
we will never reach the 70% immunity threshold by July 4 or at any time. Variants will continue to evolve, outbreaks will continue to
occur here, and many unfortunate folks will continue to die.

It should have been safe for us all to get together in Orlando in August. Just show your vaccine card at the convention hall entrance, or get a quick Covid test and don a mask. Iā€™m sure the fandom would have gotten creative with it, e.g.

a Harpy mask; a Quaithe mask; an NK95 Certified Particulate Respiratorā„¢ļø; or a facemask from Arya Starkā€™s Designer Collection, featuring a S7e1 Walder Frey facemask, a S6e10 serving girl facemask, and a S5e10 Braavos brothel girl vs. Meryn F*cking Trant exsanguination facemask. (Coming soon, from HoBW Hall of Faces: S6e8 freshly peeled Waif face, with optional dripping blood and gouged eyes for authenticity.)

ā„¢ļø Night King 2020. NKā€™s patented version of the KN95 Certified Respiratory mask, modeled after the face of Night King at the end of S5e8 on the dock at Hardhome.

But no. In Florida itā€™s now a crime for private businesses to ask for proof of vaccination. Gov. Joffrey, echoing Tucker Bolton, is vilifying Grand Maester Fauci, and voiding local mask mandates and other mitigation protocols.

Sycophants of the deposed Mad King aka Orange Walder aka Super Spreader-in-Chief dominate the Small Council in the State Legislature.

. Like so many things in this world today*, it only takes a few selfish idiots to f*ck things up for everyone else.

    * Personal pet peeve: Distracted drivers talking on their cell phones or texting when the light turns green.

    ā€This is a real bummer.ā€

ā€¢ Tell me about it. Iā€™d already obtained the red, orange, yellow, blue and blinking multicolored LED lights, the mylar film, the balsa wood, and the styrofoam for my custom designed Beric Dondarrion Flaming Sword.

Twice now Iā€™ve had to put my Lightning Lord cosplay costume and accessories in mothballs.

In the meantime, after over a year of seclusion in my Sky Cell ordering in Italian food, I would probably have been better off going to Con of Thrones as Hot Pie anyway.

  9. Ten Bears,

    I agree with everything šŸ™

Our own little version of Trump is deciding to drop all health measures in the province anyway as of July 2 despite the alarming and rapid rise of delta variant cases so the city can activate the cash grab of Stampede (a large, multi-day festival often crammed with sweaty people indoors and out) and get back to restarting the economy.

He’s even made such lovely statements as, “Yes, those people died, but they were old and frail.”/”People will die and that’s very sad.”/[doctors’ voice concern about rising delta cases] “Nah, I don’t think it’s going to be an issue.”

    Fourth wave, here we come.

  10. Adrianacandle,

    ā€œā€Nah, I donā€™t think itā€™s going to be an issue.ā€

    ā€œIt will disappear. Like magic.ā€
    – Orange Walder
ā€œThere will be no second wave.ā€
    – Op Ed by ā€œCovid Task Forceā€ Head White Lothar.

    Famous Last Words. šŸ˜”

  11. Ten Bears,

    Exactly.

“Too bad for the folks who will pass away but we’ve got money to make.”

I guess covid only counts when it’s the original strain (and only after it’s proven to be a real problem) and not the worsening variants (well, until the death rate can’t be ignored).

    No words.

  12. Adrianacandle,

    ā€I agree with everything šŸ™ā€

Including my Beric Dondarrion Flaming Sword design? šŸ˜€

Now that I have more time – another year? – I think Iā€™ll upgrade the LED lights to a string-lighting system with central battery source, instead of the 30 separate mini lights.

    šŸ—”šŸ”„

  13. Ten Bears,

That more than anything else! šŸ™‚

Please show photos when you complete it! I also like the “S6e8 freshly peeled Waif face, with optional dripping blood and gouged eyes for authenticity” idea. Would wear 100%. I always love a little red accent. Red is my colour ;D
  14. ā€As for new health/safety guidelines at future events, the health and safety of everyone attending Mischief Management events is their top priority.ā€

King Stannis: Whose ā€œtop priorityā€? The attendees (plural) or Michief Management (singular)?

ā€Additional details about the new health and safety measures for events will be made available in the future.ā€
Translation: There are no ā€œnew health and safety measuresā€ yet.
My response: Itā€™s not complicated. No shoes, no shirt, no vaccination, no entry.

Those who feel they have a ā€œrightā€ to congregate with their peers (and possibly infect them) can go to a Mar-A-Lago breakfast buffet, attend a rally, or commune with Q, Or just ā€œstormā€ the Capitol. Moronsā€¦

ā€Mischief Management is hard at work reimagining Con of Thrones for the future, looking at alternative dates and locations so that we can gather again to celebrate.ā€

Is ā€œhard at work reimaginingā€ an oxymoron? It is for me. When Iā€™m ā€œreimagining,ā€ Iā€™m usually loafing off and avoiding work.
With all of the uncertainty surrounding the duration of ā€œongoing international travel restrictionsā€ and ā€œother [unspecified] contributing factorsā€ that make it impossible to host Con of Thrones ā€œin the scheduled time frame,ā€ might it not be a bit premature to be ā€œlooking at alternative dates and locationsā€?

We’re dealing with a heat wave too. Thankfully I live on the countryside next to a forest and mountain range so it’s not as hellish as it may have been in bigger city. But still, it’s too hot and this comes from someone that enjoys summer.

  21. Adrianacandle,

ā€¢ Well, in response to your plea (?) ā€œDown with the sun. Down with the sunā€~/em>
I was tempted to link ā€œSundownā€ by your fellow Canadian Gordon Lightfoot.

ā€¢ I think Iā€™m glad Linda Ronstadtā€™s ā€œHeat Waveā€ has replaced Ethel Mermanā€™s ā€œHeat Waveā€ as your new ear worm. Lindaā€™s is more upbeat, isnā€™t it? (Linda Ronstadtā€™s version is a cover of the 1963 hit by Martha Reeves and the Vandellas – also worth a listen.)

ā€¢ Are you a fan of Ethel Merman? All I know is that her signature song is ā€œThereā€™s No Business Like Show Business.ā€ Iā€™m not particularly fond of her voice though.
I prefer this rendition of that songā€¦.

  22. Ten Bears,

I don’t think I’m a fan of Ethel Merman exactly — I have nothing against her! That song is just the first place I ever heard the term “heat wave” so it’s had that association allllll my life šŸ™‚

Is that from Annie Get Your Gun? šŸ™‚

  23. Fire blood87,

Yeah, I know, GRRM has that many times. šŸ™ But he did say he wrote hundreds and hundreds of pages in 2020. I’m a little bit hopeful this time around. I doubt he’ll ever finish the series, but I think we’ll get TWOW at least.

  24. Adrianacandle,

    I donā€™t think

Ethel M sang it in ā€œAnnie Get Your Gun.ā€ She sang it on TV about ten years later, and reprised it in another movie.
  25. Ten Bears,

    Oooh! Thanks TB!

I didn’t see Annie Get Your Gun until a few years ago when I was curious because I had heard that particular title used so much in pop culture references, like on Community (“Annie’s got a gun!”) and on other shows throughout the years šŸ™‚

Though it may be obsolete by now, Iā€™m responding to your comment above, and a related one

  27. Ten Bears: It definitely looks like it was a wise move to postpone Con of Thrones in Florida this summer:

This looks like a potential fourth wave breaking. On one hand, variant cases rising in areas with low vaccination rates may indicate the current vaccinations have some effectiveness against the variants. However, I think we’re seeing a situation where all the people willing to be vaccinated have been vaccinated (we’re hitting that wall in Canada as well) and we’re left with a significant portion of the population unvaccinated, giving the variants increased opportunity to evolve and overcome current protections.

  28. Adrianacandle,

    And now this, today:

‘Game of Thrones’ Prequel Stops U.K. Shoot Because of COVID

ā€œHBO has paused shooting on its ā€œGame of Thronesā€ prequel ā€œHouse of the Dragonā€ because of a positive COVID-19 case on set, Variety has confirmed.

As part of testing implemented for all production employees, a production member on the series tested positive for COVID-19. In compliance with industry guidelines, the production member is in isolation, and close contacts will be required to quarantine. Production will resume on Wednesday after a two-day pause.

  29. Very sorry to hear this but with the dramatic rise in cases driven by the Delta variant I am starting to believe it will be next spring before we see travel really opening up and the end of restrictions. Unsure how many international fans attend the CON but the USA is basically blocked for all of Europe, India, China, Brazil and South Africans.

  30. Ten Bears:

COVID is everywhere over here and we have one of the highest vaccination rates in the world. The only blessing is that the vast majority of cases are in the largely unvaccinated under thirties so deaths have remained very low whilst hospitalisations are growing quickly (again young people largely).

Our government have lifted restrictions but the general expectation is that it will be reversed within weeks if cases/hospital rates continue to grow exponentially.

  31. Ten Bears,

Yep. I think the 4th wave is just starting to begin but I really hope my fears unfounded there. Here in Alberta, the r-value is creeping up as are active cases again. Despite medical experts’ and doctors’ warnings, the Stampede was idiotically still held (and just finished on the 18th) and I’m sure that sure did much to help suppress covid and its strengthening variants. I think that will contribute to the rising r-value in Calgary and area. On July 1st, also against medical advice, all restrictions in the province were dropped. God, living in a world of political stupid and bottom lines. No wonder covid is flourishing.

    šŸ™

  32. Jon Snowed,

Yes, I read something about the USA not wanting people to visit (or was it formally forbidding travel there) the UK currently. As someone based in the UK I was somewhat depressed by the freedumb march in London on Monday 19th (I mean why have a march on the day when things are opening up again?). If I hear people talking about a ‘scamdemic’ or ‘plandemic’ again I think I’ll ‘do my nut’. There were some folk who seemed to have been influenced by QAnon. I hope things do ease up because the quarantine seems to have impaired some folks’ critical thinking.
