As the countdown clock runs down to the airing of Episode 2, are you wondering where Tyrion and Varys were?  Or are you still confused about who Illyrio Mopatis is?  Or still pondering why Grey Worm didn’t answer Missandei’s question?  Well, here’s a video to help you brush up on your Episode 1 minutiae.

Me, myself and I, (Dame Pasty, formerly known as Ms. D. Ranged in AZ) long time commenter and relatively new contributor to WatchersOnTheWall, have put together a detailed recap and review for your viewing pleasure.  It DOES have potential spoilers although I always give BIG warnings in red just before I talk about them.  Check it out after the jump.

Disagree with some of my viewpoints?  That’s okay.  Let me know in the comments.   Or if you like it, tell me.  Positive feedback is always appreciated.

  1. Off-topic, but small suggestion: If you’re going to put dark text on a dark background, I’d personally suggest putting a light colored stroke around the letters. It will improve readability dramatically.

  2. Delta1212,

Okay, it always look fine on my screen but after compiling it looks so much darker. I will make everything lighter next time. Even some of the screengrabs are too dark. Thanks!

  3. Haha. That is not the best looking paint job for the title card! Looks like those videos that fake link to an episode on YouTube. Great video though!

  4. This is awesome! Can’t wait to watch!

Dame are you really in AZ? I’m in Mesa and I want to go to PHX comic con this year!

  5. Lyanna_targaryen,

Yep, sure am! Up in the NW Valley, Peoria. I should go to the comicon except I have to take my daughter to an out of state soccer tournament. The sacrifices we make for our children!

  6. Delta1212,
It would be heplful saving the file as .png, too.
I’m sure the video is cool even if I can’t watch it, Dame Pasty, I just wanted to advice you since I’m a digital artist 😉

  7. Thanks for the recap!

I needed something to hold me over in this last stretch before 502

  8. LOL, Tina, I have to say you just made an episode I that thought was a bit slow and boring (at least by GoT standards) look way more interesting and exciting to me. Well done. 🙂

Im in the East Valley! Im not wild about going to comicon (Im not a big comic book reader) but the three of us should get together for a GOT viewing, or a at least a cuppa to talk about it!

  10. Dame pasty! great recap/review, really enjoyed it a lot (*^o^*) .. I lol’d at stannis’s ”oh no you didn’t, Jon” …. Aaaand it’s great to put a face to your name at last .. never knew you were kissed by Fire! .. I Can’t wait for your upcoming reviews

  11. Thanks for an awesome recap Dame Pasty! Nice to “meet” you!
I appreciated the humor and thorough coverage of all major plot points and storylines!

One question about one of your spoiler points:

So are you thinking they’re going to give the For The Watch/Daggers in the Dark moment to Olly? Since he has an intense hatred of the Wildlings (naturally after watching them slaughter his family) it could make sense. Any predictions on if/when you think it will occur?
  12. Jaime’s girl,

Yes, that’s exactly what I think is going to happen with

little Ollie (sp?).I think he will join with those who already hate him like Thorne to do FTW and his motivation will be because Jon lets the wildings through and treats them decently. Also, something I cut out of the video because it was too long, was an explanation of why there will be consequences for Jon’s action. Some like Ollie, Thorne, etc will only see that he gave mercy to a wilding. Others will like what he did because Mance’s first crime was to abandon the NW and as such, his execution is theirs to administer and NOT Stannis’ or Melisandre’s business. Plus when the NW executes someone they don’t torture them….the chop off their head. That’s what every NW brother deserves. So Jon is damned if he does and damned if he doesn’t. I think the message here, from GRRM and D&D, is that we can’t win sometimes in life so we might as well do the right thing for our own peace of mind. That’s probably how Jon sees it.
  13. Dame Pasty,

Always nice to hear and see your thoughts, DP!

Regarding Ollie as FtW…essentially you are saying that Ollie will do almost the same thing to Jon as he did to Ygritte last season…is he the master of Chekhovian blindsides at the Wall? That doesn’t sit well with me. I think Ollie may have a strong wariness of wildlings but to join the nationalistic Ides of Marsh mutineers? I don’t know about that. Alternatively, I believe he may in fact warn Jon of the threat.

After Jon’s mercy toward Mance, I believe Stannis will have a wary respect for Jon and, hence, the Winterfell leadership will be offered, followed by the twist of Jon attaining LC (hopefully). I’m sure we’ll start realizing the “consequences” of him staying at CB in lieu of these events. Personally, I think that something about the Hardhome decision and result will quickly set FtW things in motion at CB.

I still am troubled by the WF possibilities.

Thanks again for the fun distraction before ep 2! I still think of pastries and pasties when I see your posts. 🙂

  14. Hi Dame, I disagree with your views on the deal for Mance’s life. I thought it was very fair.

If you think about it, what if the wildlings actually won the battle at the wall? Would the Northern houses just let them be and let them settle in the north? I very much doubt it. The Umbers hate Wildlings and I imagine the other houses do too. The Wildlings would have had to continue fighting if they won at the wall with no guarantee of being able to establish a permanent settlement.

Stannis’ offer guarantees the Wildlings a settlement.

Mance’s decision could have been the worst possible outcome for the Wildlings.

Thankfully we know that Jon will eventually settle them in the Gift when he becomes Lord Commander. But if a different Lord Commander then Jon were to be chosen, Mance could have made a huge blunder
  15. Great video, Dame Pasty! I really enjoyed it – it was just the right blend of smart analysis and humorous commentary. I’ll be looking forward to your recaps all season.

I also appreciate that you’re posting these videos on the weekend before the new episode airs. I burned through most of my favorite written reviews and video recaps earlier in the week. It’s nice to find a new one help pass the time leading up to the next episode.

  16. I also really enjoyed this, and it adds another different type of feature to the site along with the more regulation type reviews.

Personally, I would reduce the length to more like 15 minutes, as I think a really tight show is better, and I think you could cut out some of the weaker sections. However, that’s really a minor point, because the video was still brilliant.

  17. Not bad for (what I assume is) the first try.
The sound is fine, I haven’t had trouble with readability either.

One criticism though: As someone that’s stumbled on some spoilers and exists in an environment filled with information that’s not considered really spoilery, but that still is foreshadowing future plot locations at least, I now try to keep any further spoilers at a minimum. To the point then: Could you find a way of making it easy to skip the spoilery bits? The warnings are hard to miss (good), but it ain’t really easy to continue watching at the right time (when spoiler talk is done with).

And btw. I kinda agree with you on Stannis and Melisandre. Stannis just wouldn’t make a good king, one reason being his association with the Fire priestess. She’s a true devil of this story: incredibly attractive, possibly granting any wish through R’hlorr and insanely dangerous to play with.
