Watchers on the Wall’s Take the Black Contest – Day One!

unnamed

–This contest is now closed–

The Wall can be a cold and unforgiving place, so we Watchers need to find some way to keep ourselves entertained. But, since we can only remember half the words to “The Rains of Castamere” and none of us can play the harp, a good, old-fashioned sing-a-long is out; as is a brief trip to Molestown (too poor), or a foray into the Haunted Forest (too scared).

So instead, we bring you, dear readers, a celebration of you, our black brothers and sisters in arms with a week-long giveaway of some of the finest merchandise in all the realm!

Each day this week, we will be giving away a fabulous prize graciously donated to us from The Noble Collection, which is world-renowned for their high-quality merchandise and prop reproductions.

Today’s prize is their Rhaegal Baby Dragon Sculpture which stands at an adorable 4.5 inches in height, and typically retails for $39.00.

So, what do you have to do to win this little guy? Well, it’s definitely less of a commitment than avowing yourself to a life of celibacy and limited clothing options!

To enter the drawing, comment on this post with which job you’d want on the Wall, AND then fill out the Rafflecoper below! You can select as many of the entry methods as you like, but take note that doing things like liking WotW on Facebook and Twitter or tweeting about the giveaway will give you additional entries into today’s contest.

DRAWING ENDED!

The drawing ends at 11:59 PM EST tonight, so make sure you get your entries in early! And, don’t worry if you don’t win… we’ll be back with another giveaway tomorrow!

  1. FIrst? First! Just like in the old times before HODOR.
(Oops beaten to it. But I stick with my old-timer’s overture!)

Hmmm let’s see. At the wall I need to be the cook, to be close to the larder during lean winters…

  2. The job I’d want on the wall?

    Hang-gliding Instructor

, as part of a move to resurrect the ill-fated and short-lived Crow Air Force that briefly flourished under the eight hundred and nineteenth Lord Commander, Eddard the Eagle.

  3. I would want to be Maester Aemons boy, since i can read and uhm, I guess, thats all the qualities i could offer the watch, since i am more like Sam than Jon body and mindwise.

  4. Simply, I’d like to blow the horn. I ve got pretty good sight, and being up on the wall, we’ll be really cool too.

  5. As a woman I’ll not be allowed in the Wall. But I’d want to work on the kitchens and prepera something good everyday. Just because Three-Finger Hobb is weird.

  6. Blacksmith. Since the Battle at Castle Black and the loss of a certain one armed smith someone has to keep making arms and weapons for the black brothers.

  7. I would totally be in charge of the scythe 😛
But during my free time you’ll be able to find me either in the kitchen or the library ^^

  8. I would like to take care of the Ravens, feed them and send the messages and be close to Maester Amon :o)

    So, a steward!

  9. I’d be the chef. I make a mean soup and I imagine Samwell likes to hang around the kitchens. Alternatively I’d work in the library. With Samwell

These jobs are in no way chosen based on their proximity to Samwell.

  10. I’d want to take care of all the animals : horses, ravens, direwolves, stray cats.. what do you call it? Vet? Master of Horse. 😉

  11. While I would like to say ranger, I know I would be a builder… probably at East Watch by the Sea, since I currently manage marine construction. Of course, that would never happen because I have a wife.

  12. Wandering crow all the way, Yoren and I cruising the 7 kingdoms (not in that way) drumming up business and taking your prisoners.

  13. (If I were a man) I’d love to be maester Aemon’s attendent and feeding the raven and write messages!
    I’m a bloody poet.

  14. Night gathers, and now my watch begins. It shall not end until my death.I shall take no wife,Hold no lands,Father no children,I shall wear no crowns and win no glory. I shall live and die at my post.I am the sword in the darkness,I am the watcher on the walls. I am the shield that guards the realms of men.I pledge my life and honor to the nights watch, for this night and all nights to come.

  15. Singer.
Seems like it’s the job you’re less likely to die in.

Unless you desert, that is. Then you get killed by Arya.
  16. I’d be in the blacksmiths shop. I’m stronger than I look, it’s warm, and if have a great view of the training grounds… I heart guys with swords

  17. I wouldn’t want any of the jobs on the Wall, honestly, but if I had to pick one then I’d say Maester or the Maester’s steward. I wouldn’t mind looking after the ravens.

  18. I’ll choose Maester. Hopefully at the Citadel I can pick up some good tips from Alleras on shooting a Dornish longbow, which could also come in handy.

  19. Recruiter. I could still get away at times and sneak in visits with family and friends on my way to the much warmer south.

  20. Steward.

The one that’s in charge of the library. You know, checking books for vermin, copying near unreadable tomes onto fresh parchment n bind them, fetching books for maester Aemon and whoever else needs them.

And if I read a bit inbetween those things, well, I need to know what’s there, right? 🙂

  21. I wanna be a Black Brother Ranger
Live the life of guts and danger

    Black Brother Ranger
    Life of danger

I wanna be a Castle Black Builder
Adding ice blocks, making tunnel filler

    Castle Black Builder, tunnel filler
Black Brother Ranger, life of danger

I wanna be a kickass Cook
Boil some mutton and serve hot gobbledygook

    Kickass Cook, hot gobbledygook
    Castle Black Builder, tunnel filler
Black Brother Ranger, life of danger

I wanna be a Raven Maester
Feed em corn and write a letter

    Raven Maester, letter writer
    Kickass Cook, hot gobbledygook
    Castle Black Builder, tunnel filler
Black Brother Ranger, life of danger

I wanna be the Lord’s Steward
    Keep him from being skewered

    Lord’s Steward, being skewered
    Raven Maester, letter writer
    Kickass Cook, hot gobbledygook
    Castle Black Builder, tunnel filler
Black Brother Ranger, life of danger

  22. I’d love to become the Maester (Alleras-style for me). But it seems like the best/safest job by far, and it’d be cool to read some of those NW tomes.

  23. I wish I could be a ranger but I would probably end up having to clean the latrines over and over again…

  24. Dylan Z. Neill,

We could throw books at them!

Since there aren’t many job options at the wall, and everyone’s already mentioned the witty and silly ones, I will have to go with Hobb’s assistant cook, because you need someone to chop up the veggies and skin the rabbits for 50+ people. Staying indoors mostly where it is warm and safe is always a plus that far north

  25. Shylah,

I appreciate this a lot as well! (even though I’m not entering myself – the prize is simply something that doesn’t really interest me, so better leave it for people that WOULD be happy with it… But just for fun: if I were to take the Black, I’d love to be the blacksmith)

  26. I want to be the guy that makes sure that no one licks the ice and gets their tongue stuck on the Wall. There are some weird people in Westeros, so you never do. It’s a hard job, but someone gotta do it.

  27. Ranger! (sigh) all men must die anyway… At least it would bring some excitement to this dull life

  28. I would want to be a Steward, because of the whole shelter, warmth, and actual ridiculous menu items. Do you see the stuff they serve at the Wall? Best food in Westeros, let’s be real.

  29. Cellar dweller. I could help Jon count the frozen pork loins and vegetables, maintain the stored documents, and check in on the various dead bodies in certain dark rooms.

  30. I think I’ll join Janos Slynt as the basement inspector, right during the middle of a wildling attack.

  31. I like to travel so I think I would have to be the recruiter, travelling to the dungeons of Westeros, saving noble children from the horror’s of King’s Landing and fighting off Lannister swordsmen to protect them.

  32. The Night King or a deserter! Tough choice… Hmm, on a second thought can I be Bran the Builder?

BTW, the Rat Cook position is still open… any takers?

  33. I’d like to be a ranger equipped with a dragon glass dagger or two, Even though I probably wouldn’t stand a chance against the White Walkers it would be ok, I’ve always wanted blue eyes…

  34. A steward who cooks with Hobb and that wildling-carving cleaver of his. I’d make Basamatti Rice with Tika Masala sauce for the Rangers when they come back from the Haunted Forest.

And when necessary I’d cook up links to do with today’s filming. Like this one and this one. (I can’t help myself).

  35. If i’d be a ranger i wouldn’t live long enough to see all the things beyond the wall i wish to see as a ranger. I”d be a terrible builder, steward would be nice but does not let you go very far away, so being a maester with all that extra knowledge about the existing world and it’s secrets that no one else knows, would be the thing i would enjoy the most plus a couple amputations and stichings per week(day) would just spice up the whole expirience…. Cheers

  36. …. i would not want to be a cook just because the pure economy of the dealing witch The Watch’s budet. Imagine the stress. When i cook i want to have all that i need to do the meal i wanna cook….

  37. As much as I’d like to say cook, or be brave enough to say Ranger, I know I’d be better suited to serve as a Steward.

  38. So i specifically need to comment on blog to enter and just singing in and commenting here does not count. Yes?

  39. I would absolutely be a builder. Seems like good hard labor, keeps you in shape but out of the way of the wildlings. Plus you’re always in demand.

  40. I’d make a good builder, but I could also be a steward! Probably not a ranger, I would get killed immediately.

  41. I’d love to be the maester on the wall. Seems like fun, not too much work, lots of birds talking shit around me.

  42. First I’d need to make use of Melisandre’s cloaking device, to pass muster as a male steward.
After plucking the geese and chickens, I’d hunker down in some warm corner and fletch arrows (ala Ygritte).
Sam’s too busy reading, so I’d catalog the library and tend the ravens.
    Yup, that’s what I’d do.

  43. I would want to be Maester Aemon’s assistant, I’m an un athletic bibliophile, really just a female Samwell Tarly, so to be honest it’s all I could really do….

  44. I would wanna be a blacksmith but that would leave me little opportunity to desert to the wildlings, so i guess it is a ranger for me hehe.

  45. I would *want* to be a ranger, riding forth into danger with my brothers (& sisters, using cloaking devices and otherwise) to face the white walkers head on and burn them all with the flame of my righteousness…………..BUT I would probably get stuck tending the ravens. So is my luck, at least. Otherwise I would probably spend my hours training, teaching, training…and then DRINKING away the bitter cold lonely nights. Okay, where can I sign up?

  46. Maester would definitely be my first choice, then probably a ranger as next pick, maybe helping train new recruits

  47. Ranger. Don’t care which post, as long as I am able to venture out into the wild. I’m an adventurous person, so the last thing I would want to do is sit around in a castle doing the same job day in and day out.

  48. First Steward. I think I could be a more forward-thinking, less stabby Bowen Marsh.

Or if that didn’t work out, I could become a cobbler. I’ve always wanted to learn the ins and outs of shoe repair.

  49. Hmmm…it’d be a toss up between the librarian job or taking care of the horses. Love both books and horses ALOT! Perhaps I could do a little of both since there are now many empty positions in the Watch. 🙁 That actually sounds like heaven to me!

  50. I’d like to be one of the gatekeepers, so I can hassle rangers returning.
“Sorry, sir, but that bloody sword is not a valid ID.”

  51. Someone should better take care of their ledgers and archive, especially after ADWD. I would do it. I can even speak braavosi.

  52. Wow, a nice surprise!
    Thanks WOTW!
    Thanks Shylah!

I’ll try to post a picture when I get my prize…

    Let’s all support the bottom!
