Watchers on the Wall Awards Season 7: Funniest Quote – Preliminary Round

WotW season7-awards

We’ve covered the All-Around Best Quote of the year already in our preliminary round, but we love to celebrate the humorous side of Game of Thrones here. The wit and snarky back-and-forth of the show is a delight that balances out the darkness and drama. With so many funny bits, it’s tough to choose, but that’s a good problem to have. We’re voting on the Funniest Quote of Season 7, and it’s time to narrow it down to five!

The standard rules: Select up to FIVE nominees from the poll. You can choose fewer if you like, but you cannot choose more than 5. (Visit the initial WotW Awards post for a complete explanation of the rules and process.)

At the end of 72 hours (Saturday 11/25/17 at 1PM Eastern Time), whichever five quotes have the most votes will continue on to the finals. The results of the poll will be revealed when it’s time to choose the final winner in a couple weeks.

  1. Several pretty good lines… I still think I enjoy Tyrion’s brooding failure the best. It just seemed to hit the nail on the head of how everyone describes Jon as brooding all the time, and looking good doing it. 😛

  2. I love options and all, but damn, 64 different choices?

    * “So here I am, with a thousand ships, and two good hands.” – Euron Greyjoy

    * “I thought you might still be rowing.” – Davos

    * “I came down here to brood over my failure to predict the Greyjoy attack. You’re making it difficult. You look a lot better brooding than I do. You make me feel like I’m failing at brooding at failing.” – Tyrion

    * “And you need to convince the one with the dragons or the one who fucks her brother?” – Tormund

    * “Fewer.” – Davos

I would’ve put Davos’ “King in the North” line, but it’s only funny if you also include the context of Missandei’s previous quote as well.

What was funny about Arya’s “My sister asked you a question” line?

  3. Mr Derp:

I would’ve put Davos’ “King in the North” line, but it’s only funny if you also include the context of Missandei’s previous quote as well.

What makes Davos funny is usually Liam’s impeccable timing – waiting that extra beat or two when needed – rather than any particularly witty lines that they write for him.

  4. My favorite phrase of the season was ‘Fancy-Lad School.’ Also voted for failure at brooding, he’ll do, giant monster babies, eat your liver.

Sorry not to have more room for an Olennaism, of which ‘You must be very wise by now’ was the best. Also liked Sansa’s shutdown of Baelish.

Couldn’t we expand this category to ten finalists, like the Best Picture Oscar? Plenty of worthy contenders.

  5. Davos and Houndie really stepped it up this year. The only reason I could narrow these down even a bit was because I didn’t really find about a third of them ‘funny’. I love Sansa’s comment about the northern lords, and Brienne and Arya’s exchange, but they aren’t really humourous. I went with Davos living to a ripe old age, Sandor being done with Beric’s sage wisdom, Sandor and Tormund talking about Brienne, Davos’ long-winded introduction of Jon, and Euron and his two good hands (Jaime’s expression though 😂).

Gendry’s comment on Jon’s height made me laugh out loud.

  6. Euron’s dialogue is inane and hurt the show overall in Season 7.

They pushed the Hound bitching a little too far in Season 7 as well. It got a little annoying, but overall he was still great.

Lately the funniest character has been Jaime. “Maybe it really is all cocks…” was my favorite.

  7. I voted for Olenna vs Jaime, the Hound with Tormund re. Brienne, Davos’ “fewer”, the better at brooding quote, but, to me, the one and only time I actually laughed (not smiled) was “this is Jon Snow….(pause)… he’s king in the North”.

  8. Not an easy decision with so many to choose from! Its usually when characters casually come out with expletives which creases me up laughing, so those are the one’s I have chosen 😀

The Hound and Tormund’s banter north of the wall was hilarious. Especially when Sandor realizes its Brienne of Tarth he’s talking about 😉

Bronn had plenty of funny moments also. Him laughing at Dickon’s name being a good example.

I didn’t include Davos’s – ‘This is Jon Snow — He’s King in the North!” after Missandei had reeled off all of Dany’s titles as I’d selected that in one of the other categories. That also had me laughing out loud 😛

Anyhow, here’s my selection and in no particular order of preference:

    1. “And you need to convince the one with the dragons or the one who fucks her brother?” – Tormund

    2. “Every lord I’ve ever met has been a cunt. I don’t see why the Lord of Light should be any different.” – Sandor Clegane

    3. You’re with Brienne of fucking Tarth?!” – The Hound

    4. Sandor: “Cock!” Tormund: “Ah, dick. I like it”. Sandor: “Bet you do!”

    5. “You can suck his magic cock later.” – Bronn

  9. • 14 Hound quotes! That’ll probably split the voting among Sandor fans, allowing another nominee to slip through and grab the prize. 👿

    • I realized I neglected to nominate Arya’s nonchalant line from S7e2, “One or two.”

It was in her scene with Hot Pie, when she spears the pie or cake from his tray and starts wolfing* it down:

    Arya: “Mm. This is good.”

Hot Pie: “You think so? The secret is browning the butter before making the dough. Most people don’t do that ’cause it takes up too much time.”

    Arya: “I didn’t do that.”

Hot Pie: “You’ve been making pies?”

    Arya: “One or two.”

    * Pun intended

  10. I must be miss remembering one of the quotes, I remember it like this

    Tormund: “Walking’s good. Fighting’s better. Fucking’s best.”
Gendry: But there are no women here
Tormund: You make do with what you’ve got
    Gendry stops suddenly Jon smiles

  11. Well bloody hells. There’s a dozen of Sandor and Davos impeccable lines alone (probably more). And then there’s Tyrion’s brooding, Tormund’s quips, Sam’s admittance of not having a clue what Bran is, Euron’s two hands, Jorah’s curing climate and rest, …

I’ll probably have to settle for some Davos, some Hound lines and that might be it…

But: “This is Jon Snow… He’s King in the North!” gotta take the cake here.

  12. IMO this one will be the closest, most widespread final vote. I was able to narrow my nominations and prelim round vote down to one or two for all of the others but this one I still had to vote on four.

  13. – Every word by Tormund and Sandor. Loved the conversation between the two of them. Great acting!
    – A lot of the things Davos said: “This is Jon Snow. He’s King in the North.”
    – And Jon Snow: “Then it would appear that Tyrion’s assessment is correct. We’re fucked.” Because of the smile Dany gave him when Jon said that.
Euhm I think that’s more then five. It was really a funny season. I loved all the character interactions. I hope there will be more next season.

  14. – Euron’s “So here I am, with a thousand ships, and two good hands.”
    – Sam’s “Oh! … I don’t know what that means.”
    – Beric’s “Thank you… That warms the heart.”
All simple but very funny. And really well-acted.

  15. “You should try it. Feels wonderful.” – Euron Greyjoy

“You must be very wise by now.”

“Shh shh shh, not now, well talk later.” – Euron

“Did the Lord of Light whisper that in your ear? ‘It’s snowing, Thoros. It’s windy. It’s gonna be a cold night.’” – The Hound

The Hound: “How does she look at you? Like she wants to chop you up and eat your liver?” Tormund: “You do know her.”

  16. Cutting this list down 10-11 contenders was absolute murder, and cutting it to a final five was harder still. I have no idea what the ultimate nominees will be, but it doesn’t matter too much, because I laughed at almost all of these! Season 7 was excellent in every respect, including comedy, and seeing all of these nominees lined up in one poll is great reminder of that. It makes me want to go back and rewatch all of these moments – and considering how many of them there are, it might be more practical to just watch the season watch the entire season yet again! Which is fine by me!

“This is Jon Snow. He’s King in the North.” -Davos Seaworth

The Hound: “How does she look at you? Like she wants to chop you up and eat your liver?” Tormund: “You do know her!”

Daenerys: “Are you trying to present your own statements as ancient wisdom?” Tyrion: “I would never do that… to you.”

“That is indeed a problem. The more immediate problem is that we’re fucked.” Tyrion

Davos: “This is Gendry.” Tyrion: “He’ll do.”

    Honorable Mention:

“So here I am, with a thousand ships, and two good hands.” – Euron Greyjoy

“I came down here to brood over my failure to predict the Greyjoy attack. You’re making it difficult. You look a lot better brooding than I do. You make me feel like I’m failing at brooding at failing.” – Tyrion

“It’s my fucking luck I end up with a band of fire worshippers.” – The Hound

Olenna: “That was Joffrey’s sword, wasn’t it? Not that he ever used it. What did he call it?” Jaime: “Widow’s Wail.” Olenna: “He really was a cunt, wasn’t he?”

Daenerys: “Jon Snow’s not in love with me.” Tyrion: “Oh, my mistake. I suppose that he stares at you longingly because he’s hopeful for a successful military alliance.”

“Nothing fucks you harder than time.” – Davos

Just realized that three of my selections and two of my honorable mentions are Tyrion quotes. Seven years in, he and Peter Dinklage are still throwing top-level heat.

  17. Mr Derp:

I would’ve put Davos’ “King in the North” line, but it’s only funny if you also include the context of Missandei’s previous quote as well.

That’s the one that got my vote. I understand your point, though.

For me, the mental gymnastics were easy on this one because the presumption is that anyone voting in this poll will already know the context in which it was spoken.

Euron saying he has a thousand ships and two good hands is not particularly funny in and of itself unless you know the context (Jaime being a hand short…). It is funny, though, because I’ve seen the show.

So, change your vote. Now! Do it! Kidding.

Lots of good stuff out there. The smart money is on either Sandor or muh man Davos winning this round.

  18. There’s a book in there somewhere: The Wit and Wisdom of the Seven Kingdoms. Tied between votes for lines for Davos, Bronn and Lady Olenna.

  19. Ten Bears:
    Whinging for the win.

If you get the victory, Ten Bears, you better enjoy it because I heard:

Sandor survives the great war and takes over management of the Inn at the Crossroads. He renames it Colonel Sandor’s Cluckin’ Chicken.

Three problems, though…this is Game of Thrones, afterall:

    1. He can’t keep cooks because he keeps calling them cunts, so they quit, and,

    2. He never learned to cook himself, and

    3. He keeps eating the inventory.

So, poor fella succumbs to salmonella poisoning. Shame. Shame.

  20. Erica,

Brother Ray: “There’s a reason you’re still here.”

    Sandor: “Aye, there’s a reason. I’m a big f*cker and I’m tough to kill.”

Brother Ray: “No, a reason. The gods aren’t done with you yet.”

    – From S6s7

  21. Apparently I’m the only person that literally lol when Davos said he thought Gendry was “still rowing.” It ranks right up there with the Hound “if one more word comes out of your cunt mouth, I’m going to have to eat every chicken in the room” for funniest GoT lines ever imo. There was a lot of humor this season, though, and it’s not easy just choosing 5.

  22. This must be the hardest category. So many to choose from. Can’t even decide what the method of choosing would be, so I went with how well I remember those and how good they feel, if not laugh out loud -funny.

Sandor & co. get a lot of funny stuff and so does Davos.

  23. chris l.:
Apparently I’m the only person that literally lol when Davos said he thought Gendry was “still rowing.”

I just rolled my eyes at that one because it seemed too obvious and obligatory, after all the ‘still rowing’ memes that we’d seen in the years since our last sighting of Gendry. I felt like they could’ve done better.

  24. Nothing Euron says ever makes me laugh. Just makes me wanna smack him upside the head for being a smug jerk.

  25. Firannion: I just rolled my eyes at that one because it seemed too obvious and obligatory, after all the ‘still rowing’ memes that we’d seen in the years since our last sighting of Gendry. I felt like they could’ve done better.

Yup. That was my reaction too.

What’s the drama term… “breaking the fourth wall” or something like that? Here, Davos essentially gave a shout our to the audience watching at home.

What I’m getting at is that as far as Davos knew, Gendry followed his instructions upon rowing away from Dragonstone. Davos the character would not know Gendry’s whereabouts have been accounted for (to us); Davos would simply assume Gendry promptly made good on his escape.

It’s no big deal that they gave Davos the throwaway line about Gendry “still rowing.” I just didn’t find it funny. (Similarly, while I’m an unabashed Sandor fan, I didn’t like it in S6e8 when they gave him the fan-servicing throwaway line, “I prefer chicken.” Same thing when they gave Davos King Stannis’s “Fewer” punchline.)

  26. “This is Jon Snow. He’s King in the North.” -Davos Seaworth

“For fuck’s sake, will you shut your hole? Are we coming with you or not?” – The Hound

“It’s my fucking luck I end up with a band of fire worshippers.” – The Hound

“You should try it. Feels wonderful.” – Euron Greyjoy

Bran: “I became the three-eyed raven.” Sam: “Oh! … I don’t know what that means.”

    Honorable Mentions:

Olenna: “That was Joffrey’s sword, wasn’t it? Not that he ever used it. What did he call it?” Jaime: “Widow’s Wail.” Olenna: “He really was a cunt, wasn’t he?”

Thoros: “Why are you always in such a foul mood?” The Hound: “Experience.”

“You’ve got real powerful magic to figure that out. Did the Lord of Light whisper that in your ear? ‘It’s snowing, Thoros. It’s windy. It’s gonna be a cold night.’” – The Hound

“I left this shit city because I didn’t want to die in it. Am I going to die in this shit city?” – The Hound

  27. Oh please.

Tyrion had far and away the funniest line of the series in this exchange:

    Tyrion: Did you read it?
Varys (indignantly): It’s a sealed scroll for the King in the North.
    Tyrion: What’s it say?

  28. Very difficult to chose after my #1 (This is Jon Snow… (couple of beats, side-eye from Jon) He’s King in the North.) That’s the only line that made me laugh outloud.

I like Sandor’s grumpy lines… but it’s been used a bit too much. Same with Bronn.

Loved Lady Olenna’s putdowns to poor Jaime. Burn, ouch!

I never found the Arya quotes funny, laugh inducing. More sad.

  29. Grandmaester Flash:

Why wouldn’t the funny go to Varys? He did it, after all.

  30. talvikorppi:

I like Sandor’s grumpy lines… but it’s been used a bit too much.

Agreed. Fans loved Sandor’s personality a little too much, and this season the showrunners turned it into schtik. Sometimes less is more.

  31. Firannion: Agreed. Fans loved Sandor’s personality a little too much, and this season the showrunners turned it into schtik. Sometimes less is more.

I think they actually showed some restraint where Sandor’s “grumpiness” was concerned. A couple of examples:

When Jon recognized the Hound in the cell at Eastwatch, Sandor could’ve called him a clever so and so, etc. but said said nothing.

When Jon ripped Thoros’ flask away from the Hound in order to burn Thoros’ body, Sandor said nothing.

He was decent to Brienne, as well.

  32. Ten Bears,

I agree – Arya’s pie comment (“One or two”) is up there with Tyrion’s three-worder (“What’s it say?”)
Both way funnier than some of the nominations.
Brevity is indeed the soul of wit.

  33. Firannion: Fans loved Sandor’s personality a little too much, and this season the showrunners turned it into schtik.

Give ’em a break! They ran out of good writing to adapt.

  34. Erica,

I had the impression Sandor respected/liked Jon. Because he is a king who is brave and goes fighting with his people. While Joffrey was a coward.
