Words are wind- but that doesn’t stop us from appreciating truly great words in the mouths of our favorite characters! The final season of Game of Thrones was packed with quotable moments and funny soundbites, and for this week’s prelims, it’s all about the words- the best quotes of the year. We’ll be voting on TWO categories, beginning today: the preliminary rounds for All-Around Best Quote, and Funniest Quote of Season 8.
There are two polls in the post, please make sure to vote in both!
Please choose your five favorites from each preliminary poll. The ground rules: Select up to FIVE nominees from each poll. You can choose fewer if you like, but you can’t choose more than 5. (Visit the initial WotW Awards post for a complete explanation of the rules and process.)
At the end of one week (Sunday 10/06/19 at 12PM Eastern Time), whichever five quotes from each category that have the most votes will continue on to the finals in their categories. The results of the polls will be revealed when it’s time to choose the winners in the finals.
All-Around Best Quote of Season 8
After you vote, please scroll on down to choose your Funniest Quotes!
“I fought for you, didn’t I?”
I really wanted those elephants and Jaime knighting Briene are my top in each category, now I need to think about the rest….(I like putting these two categories together, that way you can separate out the funny quotes in the first, giving you a little less to choose from)
ash,
It’s no secret I’m a Sandor and Arya partisan. So they got most of my preliminary selections.
Yet, when we reach the final round and it’s time to vote for Funniest Quote, I may have to go with Cersei:
“I wanted those elephants.”
🧝🏻♀️🐘🐘🐘🐘🐘
https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=Xq6P0iboI1M
Jon’s speech.
The only bit in GoT that ever brought me to tears:
“Sandor ….. Thank you.”
And the funniest? Davos suggesting Grey Worm start his own house.
“I’ve always had blue eyes!” This will always crack me up. ❤
Is there an award for best speech?
All-Around Best Quote
“Theon, you’re a good man. Thank you.” – Bran Stark
Brienne of Tarth: “Women can’t be knights.” Tormund Giantsbane: “Why not?” Brienne of Tarth: “Tradition.” Tormund Giantsbane: “Fuck tradition.”
“You’re not like your sister. You’re not. You’re better than she is. You’re a good man and you can’t save her. You don’t need to die with her. Stay here. Stay with me. Please. Stay.” – Brienne of Tarth
“I saw them gathered around you. I saw the way they looked at you. I know that look. So many people have looked at me that way, but never here. Never on this side of the sea.” – Daenerys Targaryen
Tyrion: “What is the realm? A vast continent home to millions of people, most of whom don’t care who sits on the Iron Throne.” Varys: “Millions of people, many of whom will die if the wrong person sits on that throne. We don’t know their names, but they’re just as real as you and I. They deserve to live. They deserve food for their children. I will act in their interest, no matter the personal cost.”
Funniest Quote
“That’s disappointing. I was told the Golden Company had elephants.” – Cersei Lannister
“Uncle, please sit.” – Sansa Stark
“I wanted those elephants.” – Cersei Lannister
Brienne: “We never had a conversation last this long without you insulting me.” Jaime: “You want me to insult you?” Brienne: “No!” Jaime: “Good.”
“Thoros isn’t here anymore so I hope you’re not about to give a sermon. Because if you are, the Lord of Light is gonna wonder why He brought you back 19 times just to watch you die when I chuck you off this fucking wall.” – Sandor Clegane
This one I’m going to do after work. Seems like a lot of work. And will be difficult to choose for some. Already too much favorites.
ash,
I think there is, yes. I expect some of those quotes to pop up there.
This was really hard. I went for some less popular choices because I expect others to be chosen. But anyway, they are all great.
Most of my picks were Arya, Hound or related to Lord of Light
60 nominees for best quote and 44 for funniest quote is ridiculously excessive.
I abstained from voting for best quote. I didn’t really care for any of them.
I voted for the blue eyes quote and Cersei’s elephants line for funniest quotes. Would’ve voted for Qyburn’s “the pox will take her within the year” line if it was nominated. I must’ve forgotten to post that one as a nominee a while ago. Surprised no one else did. It was one of the few legitimately funny lines of the entire season.
This quote is weird “I’ve served tyrants most of my life. They all talk about destiny. – Varys”;
Does he think Robert Baratheon was a tyrant? He was a dumb oaf who drank and fucked whores all day while his council ruled the kingdom. He made a few decisions once in a while (all Kings do) but most of the time he didn’t even care what they were doing.
So assuming Robert wasn’t a Tyrant… Daenerys wasn’t a tyrant (at least early on), Aerys wasn’t a tyrant (again, early on).
A couple years of Dany being a tyrant, a couple years of Aerys being a tyrant, and a couple years of Joffrey isn’t “Most of his life”.
“I’ve served fools most of my life” would’ve been more accurate.
Ok thats what I thought
For best quote
In the name of the Warrior, I charge you to be brave. In the name of the Father, I charge you to be just. In the name of the Mother, I charge you to defend the innocent. Arise, Brienne of Tarth. A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms. – Jaime Lannister
Jon: The North is free thanks to you. Sansa: But they lost their king. Jon: Ned Stark’s daughter will speak for them. She’s the best they could ask for.
Your mother… was Lyanna Stark. And your father… your real father… was Rhaegar Targaryen. You’ve never been a bastard. You’re Aegon Targaryen, true heir to the Iron Throne. – Samwell Tarly
I want to fight for Winterfell, Lady Sansa – if you’ll have me. – Theon Greyjoy
You’re not like your sister. You’re not. You’re better than she is. You’re a good man and you can’t save her. You don’t need to die with her. Stay here. Stay with me. Please. Stay. – Brienne of Tarth
for funniest quote
Whoever dies last be a good lad and burn the rest of us. – Dolorous Edd
Sandor: Going to leave me to die again if I get hurt? Arya: Probably.
I wanted those elephants – Cersei Lannister
Samwell Tarly–slayer of white walkers, lover of ladies. As if we need any more signs that the world’s ending. – Dolorous Edd Tollett
Edd: Stay back, he’s got blue eyes! Tormund: I’ve always had blue eyes!
Not sure what it says about me that 3/5 choices were said by Edd!
Reading this just make me realize how REALLY bad the writing was this season. Nothing to choose from
Cersei: “In the game of thrones, you win or you die”.
Arya: “The North came for House Frey”
Sandor Clegane: “Fucking die!”
Dire guineapig,
OK not in season 8 – I get it.
Edd (to Jon Snow): “That was funny. Are you sure that’s you?”
Brienne quote (during Long Night): “Stand your ground!!”
Brienne quote (during Long Night):
“AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA AAAAAAAAAAAAAAA AAAAAAAAAAAh AAAAAAa
AAAAAAAAAAAAah!! AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAh! AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAgh!”
Tyrion: “We’re two groups of people who don’t like each-other very much”
Samwell Tarly: “What if we gave the vote to … everyone?”
Cersei (The Bells): “The Red Keep is the safest place in the city”
Dire guineapig,
Ill have what she’s having
“Let it be fear”
Andreea,
Oh my there is a lot to choose from, really hard to pick 5. Not disagreeing with your statement but I did think there were times when the writing was on target, as can be seen by these quotes
ash,
…….as well as the scenes we voted on earlier.
I love so many of these, particularly in the Best All-Around Quote category. This was probably the second-hardest category after Best Dramatic Scene. In the end, I went with the following:
Best All-Around Quote
“All right, then. Let it be fear.” – Daenerys Targaryen (the clear winner for me. I’ll never forget how I felt my spine freeze and my heart break when Dany said those words, and I knew her fate was sealed).
“You’ve got the North in you. The Real North.” – Tormund Giantsbane (I love Jon’s endgame more and more with each passing day, and this is the perfect distillation of why I found it so fitting).
“We can’t hide behind small mercies. The world we need won’t be built by men loyal to the world we have.” – Daenerys Targaryen
“The world we need is a world of mercy. It has to be.” – Jon Snow (perfectly captures the difference in philosophy between these two tragic characters, the one thing that ultimately tore them apart despite the very real love that they shared)
“The North is free, thanks to you.” – Jon Snow
“But they lost their King.” – Sansa Stark
“Ned Stark’s daughter will speak for them. She’s the best they could ask for.” – Jon Snow (these two have come so very far in their relationship, and this was a beautiful, note-perfect capstone for it)
“In the name of the warrior, I charge you to be brave. In the name of the father, I charge you to be just. In the name of the mother, I charge you to defend the innocent. Arise, Brienne of Tarth. A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms.” – Jaime Lannister (after I saw it in that Emmy package, I couldn’t not vote for it)
Honorable Mentions: (It gutted me not to put these on the list, but the competition was just that strong … )
“What do we say to the God of Death?” – Melisandre
“Not today.” – Arya
“Love is the death of duty.” – Jon Snow
“Did you just come up with that?” – Tyrion Lannister
“Maester Aemon said it, a long time ago.” – Jon Snow
“Sometimes … duty is the death of love.” – Tyrion Lannister
“If it weren’t for you, I never would have survived my childhood. You were the only one … who didn’t treat me like a monster.” – Tyrion Lannister
“There’s no need to execute me, Ser Davos. I’ll be dead before the Dawn.” – Melisandre
“Look at me … nothing else matters.” – Jaime Lannister
“Theon … you’re a good man. Thank you.” – Bran Stark
“You gave up your crown to save your people. Would she do the same?” – Samwell Tarly
And for Funniest Quote
“Uncle, please sit.” – Sansa Stark
“I wanted those elephants. – Cersei Lannister
“Stay back, he’s got blue eyes!” – Eddison Tollett
“I’ve always had blue eyes!” – Tormund Giantsbane
“I’m not the Red Woman. Take your own bloody pants off.” – Arya Stark
“These projects will begin as soon as the Master of Coin and Lord of Lofty Titles provides funding.” – Davos Seaworth
“The Master of Coin looks forward to helping the Master of Ships, but first he has to ensure that we’re not wasting coin or soon there won’t be no more coin.” – Bronn
“Any more.” – Davos Seaworth
“You Master of Grammar now too?” – Bronn
Honorable Mention:
“I killed a giant when I was 10. Then I climbed right into bed with his wife. When she woke up, you know what she did? Suckled me at her teat for three months. Thought I was her baby. That’s how I got so strong: giant’s milk.” (an obvious one, but I already voted for it in Funniest Scene, so I’m OK with spreading the wealth here)
<em“Thoros isn’t here anymore so I hope you’re not about to give a sermon. Cuz if you are, The Lord of Light is gonna wonder why He brought you back 19 times just to watch you die when I chuck you over this fucking wall.” – Sandor Clegane
“I’m not spending my final hours with you two miserable old shits.” – Arya Stark
“Fucking die!” – Sandor Clegane (black humor at its finest)
Voted for Bronn for “All-Around”. D&D probably kept him alive until the end just so they could have him say this. Honorable mention for “You’re a cold bitch…..”. Sandor showing his soft side 😀
Andreea: “The writing was bad. REALLY bad.”
Arya: “’Really bad’”? Even a smith’s apprentice can do better than ‘really bad’.“
I wouldn’t call it REALLY bad, but if there were final WOTW Awards between the best quotes over the 8 seasons, I doubt any of this last season would stand a chance…
Tar Kidho,
I share the same feeling. I don’t know if there is a really memorable quote that could stand a chance with the others.
ash,
In agreement. My choices were lines that touched my emotions or ones that made me snort out loud because they were so unexpected due to the tension of the scene or the music.
3eyes,
“You left me to die.”
“First I robbed you.”
“You’re a cold little bitch, aren’t you? Guess that’s why you’re still alive.”
Translation = “I missed you!’ … “I missed you too!” in AryaSandorSpeak.
👸🏻❤️🐶
I had a hard time choosing the best all round quote. I just eliminated quotes that could also be in the funny quote section. Then I just chose the quotes where I could think, this reflects the show or that character well. And could I bring that scene up and feel right now without watching the show the feeling of that scenes. And I chose scenes that reflects character bonding, not just a scene about the character. That’s why while I liked Arya’s “I know death…” Quote and I found it amazing. It didn’t make my ending because of that. Still brilliant quote.
My quotes chronically in the show
Episode 2: In the name of the Warrior, I charge you to be brave. In the name of the Father, I charge you to be just. In the name of the Mother, I charge you to defend the innocent. Arise, Brienne of Tarth. A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms. – Jaime Lannister
Without watching it I can see Brienne’s face before me, the emotion. The bounding of Jaime and Brienne and everyone around them.
Episode 4: I know you don’t care about your people. Why should you? They hate you and you hate them. But you’re not a monster. I know this. I know it because I’ve seen it. You’ve always loved your children. More than yourself. More than Jaime. More than anything. I beg you. If not yourself than for your child. Your reign is over, but that doesn’t mean your life has to end. It doesn’t mean your baby has to die. – Tyrion Lannister
Made my cut because this reflects Cersei 100% who she was over the 8 seasons. What she fights for. It shows also the love that Tyrion still feels for his hateful sister, and it showed that Cersei deep down loved Tyrion.
Episode 5: You always knew exactly what she was, and you loved her anyway. – Tyrion Lannister
This for me sums up perfectly who Jaime was. Why he went that far for Cersei. The things he do for love.
Episode 5: If it weren’t for you, I never would have survived my childhood. You were the only one who didn’t treat me like a monster. You were all I had. – Tyrion Lannister
This reflects perfectly the bounding between Tyrion and Jaime. And why those 2 had such a strong bond. It shows how important Jaime was for Tyrion.
Episode 6: Everywhere she goes, evil men die and we cheer her for it. And she grows more powerful and more sure that she is good and right. – Tyrion Lannister
Once again Tyrion reflects perfectly who Dany was, what made her powerful and why we as fans cheered for her even when her actions were evil. And why she keeps on doing those evil deeds even when there was a less violent option on the table. This is also my favorite quote of the season. And it made me think about somethings that is happening in this world right now, so it’s also a reflection on the world we live in. (Not Dany character but the quote itself)
Funny quotes. Difficult too choose. Some quotes are funny because of other reason.
Episode 1:
Edd: Stay back, he’s got blue eyes! Tormund: I’ve always had blue eyes!
This one had me laughting outloud so this should be in my top. Scene was brilliant.
Episode 2:
I killed a giant when I was 10. Then I climbed right into bed with his wife. When she woke up, you know what she did? Suckled me at her teat for three months. Thought I was her baby. That’s how I got so strong: giant’s milk. – Tormund Giantsbane
&
I will have that drink after all. – Davos Seaworth
Thormund story is one of the most funny one of the whole show. And Davos reaction to it was just brilliant and made sure my laughter did continue.
Episode 4:
I mean it Clegane, my heart is broken. – Tormund
Brilliant, especially when he tells it to the hound and Sandor’s face is priceless there. (Can’t you hear him think: Oh for fucks sake, fuck off!)
Episode 6:
Uncle, please sit. – Sansa Stark
Having Edmure first make a fool of himself which is brilliantly cut by Sansa.
2 that didn’t make my final 5, but had in my last cut were.
Episode 5: Ser Gregor! Obey your queen! – Qyburn
Not really funny because Qyburn died, but more the irony in that scene.
Episode 6: Start your own House, with the Unsullied as your bannermen. – Davos (to Grey Worm)
Not really funny because it was meant seriously but thanks to watchersonthewall this scene cracks me up now. Good luck Grey Worm. And this quote should be in the “most brilliant quote” Not even LF was this cunning.

3eyes,
… And another tender moment…
(S8e4, Sandor & Arya headed to KL, at 1:08 – 1:18)
Sandor: “Are you going to leave me to die again if I get hurt?
Arya: “Probably.”
3eyes,
You and TB understand the same language–ArSan-speak. IMO, of all the characters–even the Lannister twins–they have their own lingo, short, gruff, insulting, perverse. It’s an UNcommon tongue and anyone who overhears must be baffled by it. Similarly, over the course of the show, they have been such a couple that their personalities and spirits have virtually melded. This was patently obvious in 8.05…perhaps he insisted she live so urgently because he wanted to but couldn’t, so he’d live on in her. Thank you, Sandor. Thank you, Arya
This was really hard!
Best Quote:
1. “I fought for you, didn’t I?”
2. You’ve got the North in you. The real North.”
3. Love is more powerful than reason.”
4. “We can’t hide behind small mercies. The world we need can’t be built by men loyal to the one we have.
“The world we need is a world of mercy. It has to be.”
5. “What is the realm? A vast continent home to millions of people, most of whom don’t care who sits on the Iron Throne.”
“Millions of people, many of whom will die if the wrong person sits on that throne. We don’t know their names, but they’re as real as you and I. They deserve to live. They deserve food for their children. I will act in their interests, no matter the personal cost.”
Funniest quote:
1. “I’m not the Red Woman. Take your own bloody pants off.”
2. “You going to leave me to die again if I get hurt.”
“Probably.”
3. “Stay back, he’s got blue eyes.”
“I’ve always had blue eyes.”
4. “Thoros isn’t here anymore, so I hope you’re not about to give a sermon. Cuz if you are, the Lord of Light is gonna wonder why he brought you back 19 times just to watch you die when I chuck you off this fucking wall.”
5. “The big woman still here?”
Andreea,
I had the exact opposite reaction. Reading this list made me appreciate how much outstanding writing went into the final season.
Ten Bears,
Seven hells! Now I’m overcome with feels, dammit!
Tar Kidho,
I wouldn’t be so sure. Some of my favorite quotes were those that would be quite unimpressive on their own. But, when given context and well acted line delivery, these lines have quite the impact. A few examples of these would be:
“That’s not a monster. That’s just a baby.”
“Do I have to beg you?”
“Go on, do your duty.”
“Tell Cersei. I want her to know it was me.”
“Let it be fear.”
“Sandor. Thank you.”
“I fought for you, didn’t I?”
These may not be as fancy as “Chaos is a ladder” or “Leave one wolf alive, and the sheep are never safe,” but I would argue they are just as powerful.
They did seem to be two sides of the same coin in the end. Yes, Sandor lives on because of the gift he gave to our ASNAWPTWP
Well, I hope you didn’t tear up over these warm and fuzzy words of affection:
“Someday, I’m going to put a sword through your eye and out the back of your skull.”
“You’re the worst sh*t in the Seven Kingdoms!”
Amen to that. “Context and well-acted line delivery.”
In addition to the great examples you cited, I’ll never forget the impact of Oberyn finishing his long speech in Tyrion’s cell in S4e7 with these five words:
”I will be your champion.”
I’d also add two others by Sandor, in S4e10 and S4e1 respectively:
Brienne: “And that’s what you’re doing? Watching over her?”
Sandor: “Aye. That’s what I’m doing.”
____
Polliver: You lived your life for the king. You’re gonna die for some chickens?”
Sandor: “Someone is.”
I do now…..*le sigh*
You kind of read my mind. There were times it seemed like Arya was channeling The Hound. At the Crossroads Inn (S7s2), the way Arya grabbed and wolfed down the roll (?) from Hot Pie’s tray, and asked “Got any ale?” before grabbing the pitcher without waiting for an answer, was vintage Sandor.
Better yet – and this gave me a laugh – was in early S5 when the Waif came into Arya’s room with a stick to play “the Game of Faces”:
Waif: “Who are you?”
Arya: “No one.”
(Waif whacks her with stick)
Arya: “Ow! C*nt!”
Waif: “Who are you?”
Arya (uncovering Needle): “You’re about to find out.”
Stark Raven’ Rad,
I’m just going to leave this here for any Arya fans: Maisie Williams at Paris Fashion Week.
https://www.popsugar.com/beauty/maisie-williams-boyfriend-matching-eye-shadow-46699457
Ten Bears,
Agreed! Those are great lines/scenes!
There was definitely a sense that her time with Sandor had toughened her up enough to survive the trip to Bravos and back, and that she had, unawares, patterned the behavior of her substitute father. Those scenes were more compelling for it, IMHO.
This is giving me life – and hope for the future! Thank you so much!
I’m glad someone else appreciates this one!
Ten Bears,
She still ooks like a schoolgirl! Cute pic of the two of them
She always manages to look adorable – and different. She really is the Many-Faced Goddess.
It’s kind of ironic – in a nice way – that she’s become a fashion icon. I remember a few years ago lots of critics were asserting she’d be limited in her career because of her height, and because she didn’t have the stereotypical Hollywood willowy stick figured blonde look. And now she’s all over magazine covers and doing modeling photo shoots. 😃
One thing’s for sure. The camera loves Maisie Williams. That could be explained, in part, by this “meta moment” in the show:
“You have very expressive eyes, Mercy. Wonderful eyebrows.” (Lady Crane to Arya S6e6)
In thanks to all of you, here is a charming Vogue video which I first saw last night.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=m2OuV0sEa9o
She is an eccentric dresser with a style of her own, but like Sophie T she has found a presence in this world, albeit an unconventional one. Right now, Reuben seems to be her complement.
“Sandor…Thank you.”
Nothing more satisfying than seeing this relationship come full circle. Steady, sometimes wild character growth. Most characters weren’t so lucky in the development department but I will be forever thankful that D&D really gave Sandor and Arya a lot of meat to work with over the seasons.
this vote should be called “Best dialog of season 8″…not best quote. this poll includes too many conversations between characters. Epic as they may be, they are not singular quotes. You could have a separate poll on best dialog in season 8 and I would be twice as interested. I would be more than happy to participate in that poll.
Well said!
I was so glad they sprinkled in mentions of the Hound during Arya’s sojourn in Braavos:
First, in S5 during the Game of Faces when Arya insisted to Jaqen 2.0 that she’d left Sandor to die because she hated him and wanted him to suffer, and Jaqen whacked her, because: ”A girl lies to me. To the Many-Faced God. To herself.”
Then, in S6 the Waif asked “a girl” about Arya Stark’s family and abruptly inquired: “Tell me about the Hound.” Arya conceded she’d taken him off her list because she did – and did not want him dead anymore; she admitted she was “confused.”
Those two callbacks to Sandor not only convinced me he would return, but also beautifully portrayed Arya’s conflicting emotions, setting up their reconciliation when she finally met up with him again in S8.
I’m so glad the Sandor & Arya story wasn’t jettisoned like some other characters’ storylines in the rush to the finish line.*
* I could whinge about the abbreviated time devoted to Jon & Arya in S8, but that would be selfish.
Stark Raven’ Rad,
I’m going to watch the Arya Stark Vogue video – I mean the Maisie Williams Vogue video – over the weekend.
Thanks for posting it!
Stark Raven’ Rad,
”She is an eccentric dresser with a style of her own, but like Sophie T she has found a presence in this world, albeit an unconventional one.”
A Girl has impeccable fashion sense.
Here’s my (today’s) favourite series 8 quote
Jon: “What does it matter what I do?”
Tyrion: “It matters more than anything!”
