Game of Thrones Season 8 Teaser Trailer Released!

GOT Season 8 Teaser Trailer

The first proper teaser trailer for the final season of Game of Thrones has been released online … and, boy, is it beautiful.

Though the teaser doesn’t include any footage from the new season, it does give us some truly gorgeous visuals. Over a melancholic rendition of the main theme, ice spreads from the north, covering a wolf and a dragon (#StillSadForViserion), while fire burns up from the south until the two meet in the middle and erupt in dragonglass.

Let’s cross our fingers the official trailer with new footage isn’t far away!

Meanwhile, at GOTXP in Brazil, David Benioff, D.B. Weiss, John Bradley and Maisie Williams attended the Game of Thrones panel, which the official Game of Thrones Twitter account was kind enough to live tweet. Here are a few highlights:

  1. The symbolism is strong in this clip. I can decipher that the battle against the Night King will engulf the entire North. And afterwards, Cersei will take up the mantle as the last baddie. This trailer seems to hint at such. Which many people thought would be the case anyways.

It was a beautiful trailer, but my appetite won’t be satiated until we get a live-action trailer. That should come around the last week of Jan, or the first week of February.

  2. I like it better than the S7 Sigils teaser, except that one actually had a new line of dialogue whereas this one doesn’t…

  3. Alba:
So, basically no footage and nothing new. #HBOtrolling

I wouldn’t expect any real footage until at least February.

  4. Jack Bauer 24: I wouldn’t expect any real footage until at least February.

Me neither, though I think it might be in Jan. But Ima is still hoping for Christmas. A girl can dream.

  5. Anyone who’s able to follow that map better than I was see any particular reason the fire started where it did? Obviously it makes sense they’d have the teaser be ice and fire, but would’ve thought the fire would’ve started with the dragon, not the lion. Trying to see if there’s some secret message in the where the fire was. Might be thinking too hard.

  6. As over-the-top secretive as they have been for this final season I wouldn’t be surprised if the promo material is even less informative/spoilery and amount than usual. For past seasons even with leaks and pap-shots of filming it was difficult to guess what was happening in trailer footage and official set photos. They’re definitely not going to give anything away for S8… Still fun to take guesses about what we’re seeing. Sometimes we’re close or spot on, such as the really early S7 shot of Arya on her horse looking at something in the distance that did indeed end up being her seeing Winterfell upon her return.

  7. I honestly expected nothing from this Expo anyway, so it’s just nice to see David and Dan out and about finally talking about GoT again.

HBO was teasing Big Little Lies on their IG so I’m thinking that’ll premiere after TD Season 3 and whenever BLL has its finale, GoT should premiere afterwards.

  8. A song of ice and fire. The end is here.

My prediction. We will get the first trailer in februari. But our first glimps will come end of the year. The 2019 hbo trailer.

I watch all 3 shows so 2019 will be a weekly treat. (even if got is the only one I will be watching every week)

  9. Eonwe:
Everybody move out. There’s nothing to see here.

Hmmm, I dunno…What I thought I saw was when Ice and Fire come together they form a crystalline structure that looked suspiciously like the Show depiction of Dragonglass ( the black stones in the Dragonstone Cave in 7.04). After all, Dragonglass is alternatively called Frozen Fire in the books…

I thought they already released that? That’s where we got the first S8 footage of Sansa hugging Jon and looking suspicious.

  11. It’s fine. Nothing hype-inducing. But then, ‘hype’ is right up there with ‘bittersweet’ on the list of overused words. 😁

  12. I’m still a bit confused by who represents fire and who reps ice. It seems a safe bet that Dany is fire.. but what about the R’hllor groupies, are they fire, too?

Are the Starks ice? I thought the Night King and Walkers are ice? Surely the Starks and the NK can’t be on the same side, right? I’m doubtful that the Starks represent ice, which means Jon’s parentage didn’t make him a mixture of fire and ice.

So either the two elements will clash, or they’ll combine and create harmony like a song?

  13. Anon,

I don´t know what Benioff and Weiss views are, but George Martin has said that fire and ice are the dragons and the Others (White Walkers). The supernatural threats that everyone in Westeros is ignoring because they are fighting for the Iron Throne.

  14. In the trailer, ice consumes a bunch of castles, then the wolf and Unsullied pogs. Then it covers a dragon pog. There’s another pog in the south that looked like a horse, is that a Dothraki pog? Most likely the Golden Co. ..though I’ve never seen that one before. Then fire consumes the horse and lion pogs.

  15. Anon,

That’s because George views the dragons as nuclear weapons that made Daenerys the defacto most powerful person in the books.

But Martin’s also said that having the power to destroy doesn’t give you the power to rebuild and reform. And recently he mentioned that Dany should read his new book (Fire and Blood) to learn.

Dragons were the glory and ruin of the valyrians and Targaryens.

  16. This is very cool imagery, and I think it’s a smarter tease campaign than some stuff they’ve done in the past. Listen, as long as we never go down the Sight road again, I’m happy!

  17. That’s a very haunting rendition of the main theme at the beginning. It reminds me of the music that played when Jamie rode north at the end of 7×07.

  18. That is a great teaser clip! The ever-spreading ice across Westeros from the north, the fire leaping onto Westeros from vessels on the water, and then they meet to form dragon glass. The Wolf and the Dragon become covered in ice, the Lannister Lion is consumed by flame. So many possible interpretations!

I’m going with the idea Mel’ will lead Red Priests and their attendant army of fanatics onto Westeros from the Free Cities, becoming Dany’s support after she loses Unsullied and Dothraki. Cersei tries to defend herself with wildfire, reaping the result Bronn feared. Dany becomes the final Big Bad, whom the surviving natives of Westeros must defeat.

  19. On the topic of when GoT will premiere, for those that haven’t seen it mentioned anywhere yet, as of right now the extended HBO schedule is showing True Detective airing TWO new episodes back-to-back on its premiere night (Jan. 13th). What that means is if they do that and do air BLL after TD then BLL could finish on April 14th allowing GoT to premiere as early as the 21st.

  20. With any normal season I’d be right there with the “this is BS, I want live footage” folks. But honestly once the premiere happens, it’s all over but the shouting and I want to just relax and savor it. Frankly, just show me a trailer of close-ups of all the major players left as they each go into whatever battle it is they will be fighting. I don’t need to see shit. We know many will fight. We know most will die. All the little moments, the warm and fuzzy stuff, the stuff that will make me cry my eyes out – save it for the screen. This is the last go-round kids. Enjoy it because there will never be a show like this again, even the shows HBO is purposely making because they want more shows like this, we all know they won’t be the same.

  21. Clob,

Someone I know who works for HBO told me GoT is premiering on April 14, 2019. It just came up in casual conversation. He said it so casually as if it were common knowledge. Truth be told, he was a little inebriated so maybe he didn’t realize he let the cat out of the bag.

  22. I studied the images in detail and at length. I then did it again just to be sure. I considered a lot – my big conclusion is that the clip means the HBO marketing staff are good, very very good (read that in the same tone that Ramsey said it.)

    Well done!

  23. Tensor the Mage, Who Understands HYPE Has A Quality All Its’ Own,

I just want to know if we’ve seen the last of Kinvara (Ania Bukstein) and Maester Ebrose (Jim Broadbent).

I’d just as soon not see any of the major characters in any trailers or promos. It’s better to go into the final season at … what’d somebody call it? …. something like “Full Level Dee”, i.e., with the fortitude to avoid anything that gives away any details.

  24. Anyone else spotted the Unsullied mark piece in the North 0.11-0.16, and the burning Martell and possibly Tyrell sigils in the south at 0.19 near their respective regions?

  25. Wow! Four-ish weeks till footage trailer?! FOUR!

And a mere 20 weeks until the end begins. Take that in folks. We’ve been waiting close to a year and a half already, and now….. twenty freaking weeks until the last season of the greatest show to ever air will see it’s dawn.

  26. Pigeon,
We haven’t had people overusing “agency” lately. IIRC there was time it seemed to be every third word on here. Perhaps we should try for a revival? 😉

  27. Jack Bauer 24: Kev

oh really, sorry forget that one, though that was just an overview what HBO has to over. I hope we get a second teaser trailer before the end of the year. Last year we had also 2 if I remember right, one with the Sigils, which you could say is what we got now.
And one with Cercei, Dany, Jon and the Night King walking to the throne.

  28. We get this and Avengers End Game in less than twenty fours and we are surely only a few weels away from a proper trailer with footage for the last season too. I think my head will explode!

  29. Edward:

I’ll be amazed if we have to wait that long with an April release. Avengers 4 comes in April and they’ve just released their trailer, also the HBO head said a few months back we should get the first full trailer this year so I’d imagine some time over the festive period for the first trailer and the final one in Feb.

  30. Clob: That is a great teaser clip! The ever-spreading ice across Westeros from the north, the fire leaping onto Westeros from vessels on the water, and then they

April 21st is widely regarded as the most likely date isn’t it? I mentioned before Kim Renfro suggested this date and I’ve seen numerous sources suggest this is most likely since.

  31. Awesome. So I’m thinking either Jon or Cersei will, by choice, become the new NK or NQ. That’s just my theory. The whole white walker invasion just reminds me of Wrath of the Lich King.

  32. Jon Snowed: April 21st is widely regarded as the most likely date isn’t it? I mentioned before Kim Renfro suggested this date and I’ve seen numerous sources suggest this is most likely since.

I think so but I do still routinely see people commenting about the 28th. The 21st has always been my target. If not the 21st then earlier. I believe the 28th is actually too late and out of the equation…

    Winter Wolves:
    Clob,

Someone I know who works for HBO told me GoT is premiering on April 14, 2019.It just came up in casual conversation.

This one would be surprising. There is no confirmation that BLL will actually air in the gap after TD but I think everyone thinks it will. It is possible if they fast-track TD and BLL even more though. Even if they do have a double episode premiere for TD they could begin BLL the same night as the TD finale which WOULD open up the 14th.

  33. I think Jon may sacrifice himself to save the human race but there is absolutely zero chance of Cersei doing this. We also know from filming spoilers from this site

that Jon and Cersei will meet in Kings Landing in either episode 4 or 6

which again makes this theory less likely (but not impossible).

  34. I’m glad for the teaser, it looks beautiful and poetic. I miss GOT and TWOW so much, that I have ordered Fire and Blood today, although I don’t expect anything new, and I’m roaming on various sites of GOT related gifts.

  35. Imagine Game of Thrones was on a non-premium channel. Otherwise we’d have History Channel’s Incest and Alien Dragons: The Targaryen Story, ILifetime’s Dance Moms With Cersei Lannister, and Bravo’s Lord Tyrion’s Drag Race, the latter of which would admittedly be badass,

  36. Eonwe,

Thanks, I’m glad to hear that. I have bought and read TWOIAF (the artwork is such a treat!) and I am familiar with the Targaryen chronicle. That’s why I postponed buying F&B… but not for long.

  37. Dee Stark:
    Ten Bears,

    Hahaha Dee as in me?
    Who said that! that’s funny

And yes, that’s the best way, especially for the finale season.

    Yes, as in you.
I don’t remember who said it, or if I remembered it verbatim.

  38. Edward:

It was a beautiful trailer, but my appetite won’t be satiated until we get a live-action trailer. That should come around the last week of Jan, or the first week of February.

January 11 is the premier of season three of True Detective. Seems like a perfect night to release a trailer for Season 8. If not then, a Superbowl spot February 3 would make a splash.

  39. Feb honestly sounds far too late for me. Remember the HBO head said we should get the trailer in 2018 only a couple of months back and S8 is now on 5 months away from premiere. At this point I think we will get the first full trailer over the festive period and the second in Feb.
