Game of Thrones production in Spain continues in full swing, with more dates confirmed

The set at El Chorillo north of Almería that we previously reported on is growing, says La Voz de Almería. The round-base structure mentioned in the earlier post has now been joined by makeshift office buildings, and – most interestingly – a tent-frame structure and what is reported to be a ship of sorts, covered by white canvas. Shooting there is not supposed to start before October, though. [Editor’s note: A translating error on our parts- the original La Voz article was referring to the white-covered structure as a nave, not a ship. Apologies for the confusion! -Sue]

Before that, Game of Thrones is going to shoot at Castell de Santa Florentina for almost two weeks  between 9-22 September (not coinciding completely with the nearby Girona dates), and at Zafra (a location we are looking forward to very much) on 28-30 September, Los Siete Reinos tells us.

Castell_de_Santa_Florentina

We wrote about Castell de Santa Florentina earlier here. The length of the shoot there seems surprising, triggering speculation on what they will use the location for. A plausible guess at this point could be Sta. Florentina will stand in for Horn Hill, the home castle of the Tarlys.

As always, we will report on further details as we learn them. The following months promise to be chock-full of reports from all around Spain!

  1. I’m interested about that ship, I mean why build it in the middle of a desert when you could do that near a studio or in a parking lot 😛 .

  2. Curiouser and curiouser!

    A ship in the desert?
Would it be easier to film in the sand and then use VFX to create the water? I’ve always heard creating realistic VFX water is problematic, but maybe the logistics of filming on land make up for any downside? Seems odd to me.

Well Castell de Santa Florentina is on a hill and surrounded by trees… It’s a bit different than I imagined Horn Hill, but with a little VFX magic I can see it standing in. Still… two weeks seems like a fairly long time for what I expected to be rather limited screen time. Maybe the Tarlys will have more scenes than I expected…

  3. Any news about Season 6 is awesome, but I am still eagerly awaiting news about a certain Septon,

a certain Brother, and a certain Digger of Graves…!
  4. Am I the only one who can’t picture Santa Florentina as Horn Hill? I mean, it looks too “beautiful” and aristrocratic. Horn Hill’s supposed to be in the Dornish Marches, being built to resist sieges and raids, so it should be practical and austere. This one looks too embellished to me.

  5. Luka Nieto:
    Darquemode,

Literally every ship you’ve ever seen in Game of Thrones is on land, surrounded by greenscreen, with CGI water.

They are all the same ship. I think they should build a second modell of a different ship type with all the money they have now.

  6. A ship at the Almeria site? There was speculation that this site with its quite-long shooting period, is setting up to be the Battle of Meereen. Just outside the Meereen city limits, it is desert-like, but it’s also on the sea. So I hope this “ship” indeed points to some intense action in and around Meereen, with Tyrion, Varys, Rhaegal, Viserion, Greyworm and Missandei, all present.

  7. Makes sense if Sam and Gilly and the cast of the ship would be all in one spot to shoot the ship stuff near where they are going to land- desert doesn’t seem much different from a parking lot 😉
However if I recall correctly Horn Hill is landlocked. Could this be Oldtown/Citadel arrival stuff?
EDIT: but the photos of the castle make it look perfect for either Horn Hill or Citadel. In photos it’s surrounded by trees.

  8. I’m most interested in the 2 weeks tidbit. That’s a significant chunk of time for a location I assumed would play a much more minor role. (Assuming this is our Horn Hill of course)

    Kay,

See Luka Nieto’s comment. It matters very little *where* they build the ship.

    Tywin of the Hill,

They may just be trying to establish a similar look for all of the Reach or near-Reach locations, including Horn Hill. That is, lush.

  9. Darquemode: A ship in the desert?

Well…there is the Dothraki Sea to consider…. 🙂 Euron has traveled the world in Silence, so he says. Maybe we should consider the literal interpretation of this sight…

  10. where is this ship that everybody is seeing? To me that thing in the ‘desert’ looks like a hut.

    Maybe Highgarden?

  12. It reminds me of Depp running from the ship on land carried by those crabs in PotC. Btw, should this article be spoiler tagged? Correct me if I’m wrong, I mean it is giving away plot info. Theories get spoiler tagged on this site that’s why I ask, overboard imo

I would assume the black long thing in front of the hut is the ship/boat? Hello everyone ! I am fairly new to to this site. I was lurking in the shadows for a couple of weeks. This site is the best!

  14. Sue the Fury,

Sue, sorry to bother you here in the comments section, but I’ve had trouble subscribing (keeps coming up with “there’s been an error, try again”). I’ve also tried the “notify me” tick boxes under the comments. I’ve tried several times over the last few months to no avail. Just wondering if you’ve had reports of others having similar problems and if there was a fix? I’ve tried going through the “contact us” section and haven’t had a reply (prob related to the same issue!).

Thanks so much to you and the team for all the updates and the fantastic site.

  15. There is no ship there. It was a miscommunication via translation.

I talked to Evaristo Martinez from La Voz, who explained it. What we translated as ship, also simply means nave or an industrial unit. He was referring to the white structure in the right middle of the photo.
He thoughts perhaps that’s just where they’ll build scenery without being seen.

You can also see what he’s talking about here, a photo from elalmeria.es:

  16. Dame Pasty,

Hi there! Thanks for taking this up.

I’ve tried on my PC at work (Chrome) and my mac at home (both through safari and chrome). I hadn’t thought to try from my ipad, will do so now!

    …and success! Thank you 🙂

    Deb

  17. Tywin of the Hill,

The first time I learnt that the Santa Florentina castle was going to be used as a location, I immediately thought of Highgarden… but I guess we won’t see HG in the show (not that we’ve seen much of it in the books, either).

It doesn’t give me the vibe of Horn Hill, to be honest… but I guess we’ll have to wait and see…

  18. Sorry for the shipgate, everyone! 🙂

Since it’s all speculation, Highgarden is definitely not excluded! They could very well bring HG into the narrative somehow, and use Santa Florentina as the location.

  19. If ‘they’ spot trailers this far out of clear sight, it can only mean one thing……
    Cleganebowl? Confirmed? Get Hype?
What? No one’s said it already? Shame! All you C-C-G-Hypers are slipping!!!
