Behind the scenes of the Tarly family barbecue in new “The Game Revealed” clip

5 705 - Reach - Randyll, Dickon 1

HBO released yet another clip from the “Eastwatch”-focused The Game Revealed, the seven-part documentary series about season seven. HBO subscribers can watch the entire thing, while the remaining fans must content themselves with snippets like this one, which is all about Randyll and Dickon Tarly’s blazing farewell from Game of Thrones.

Nerdist exclusively divulged this clip, which gets into the technical aspects of how the Tarlys’ deaths were accomplished — with James Faulkner and Tom Hopper pantomiming dragon-induced immolation, brave stuntmen catching on fire while wearing silly grimacing masks, and truly horrifying scorched dummies that actually turn into dust.

I don’t know about you guys, but I was sure the bodies turning into dust were CGI. Seeing them disintegrate in reality make them even more breathtaking. Thankfully, they were still dummies; no Faulkners or Hoppers were harmed in the making of the scene.

  1. That behind the scene piece is interesting. The way Dinklage talks he makes it sound like Tyrion’s loyalty to Dany is hanging by a thread and this decision will bring major consequences. Ramsey’s 20th Man might be spot on.

If you wanted to write a caricature of GoT, this act would lead to Tyrion/ Varys/ Jon betraying Dany, Dany losing it and becoming more ruthless, more power sliping from her fingers. Effectively turning her into Rhaenrya Targaryen. Then the message of the story is power is corrupting, especially for women.

If they go in that direction I would just want the Night King to win at that point. Humanity in Planetos is not worth it.

  2. House Monty,

Agreed, later Tyrion says that executing Randyll Tarly (not Dickon) was justified. Dany burning the Taryls wasn’t an act of madness but ruthlessness for her enemies and if she’s going to conquer and rule she needs that. Also, she inadvertently rights a wrong from the first season.

  3. House Monty,

I can’t help but wonder – doesn’t Tyrion KNOW that his dear sister Cersei burned the Great Sept of Baelor with wildfire, killing the huge crowd of nobles and courtiers within and wiping out at least one Great House, along with a good section of King’s Landing and its less noble residents? Is Tyrion crazy, that he feels that the voluntary execution of two of the enemy is somehow worse? Hasn’t anyone told him what’s going on in the black cells, with Ellaria and what remains of her daughter?

At this point, Tyrion’s arc-of-betrayal looks as stupid as the Arya-Sansa catfight, or the Arya-“Waif” battle to the death. I can only hope we’re wrong.

  4. zandru,

Totally. I really hope this is not where it is going.

Tyrion has almost been destroyed for me as a character after this year. He opens his mouth now and I think do the opposite.

  5. A great inside video showing how that was done. Fuck being a stunt man and set alight 😮

They’re brave guys and I certainly wouldn’t do it! Even with all the protective clothing and fire resistant prosthetics they have!

Let’s not forget about the whole hypocrisy when Tyrion organized and ordered Stannis’ fleet flattened without seemingly giving two hoots. Queen of Thorns (RIP)
gave some very sound advice which, we seen acted on.
