A Variety of New Roles Being Cast for Game of Thrones Season 7!

raven wide (2)

Casting speculation for Game of Thrones is a little funny this year. Being so far off the books, we’re a bit lost! But there’s still fun to be had, and thankfully our sources are still providing. We’ve just received a nice batch of season 7 casting breakdowns, offering up info about a variety of roles the show has recently been casting. Let’s see what we can glean from the new casting info!

As has become the standard, there are no names on the roles, only generic titles.

If you don’t like potential spoilers, then this is not the post for you.

  • General, in the age range 40 – 55. He’s a senior military officer, and they’re looking for a white actor who uses the British RP accent. The actor is needed for the week of September 6th.
  • Priest, in his 60’s. He’s a venerable priest with moral authority and gravitas. The show is seeking a white actor, using an RP accent, with characterful face for this part. He’s scheduled to shoot one week, from September 22nd.
  • Warrior, in the 35 – 45 age range. The character is a tough-looking bruiser with the attack skills of a pit bull, and the actor needs to be great at fighting. He has a “considerable” amount of dialogue as well. It’s described as an “excellent part for a top-end actor.” Helpful clues in the description? We know it’s not a Dothraki character as the actor for the role is required to be white, and they’re asking for a neutral and non-posh English accent. This role is currently scheduled to shoot across October.
  • Gate Guard, in his 20’s. The character is described as a “Confident, characterful, straight-talking Northern lad with a great face to play across a very excellent series of scenes.”  They’re looking someone with wit, timing, and charisma. He’s currently scheduled to film between mid-October and mid-November.
  • City Guard, in his 30’s. The show is casting for a city guard who intercepts a suspicious-looking person on his nightly patrol. They require an RP accent for this one. He’s set to shoot for a week in mid-October.
  • Merchant, in his 40’s. The merchant appears at an inn during a busy evening. They’re seeking a character actor, for a non-combatant role. His appearance is more open, including ethnicity/race. That suggests a character appearing somewhere in Essos- or a place we’ve never been before, since Daenerys is now on the move. This part is scheduled to shoot the first week of November.
  • Lovely Lady. Ah yes, what would Game of Thrones be without its courtesans and nudity. The show is casting for an attractive young courtesan who is sure of her own mind. It’s described as a “good speaking part” and casting notes that full nudity is required for the role. Similar to the merchant, the lovely lady’s physical appearance is open, indicating this role is for somewhere on Essos, or at a new location. She’s scheduled to shoot for one week in early October.
  • Young Lord in his late 20’s. He’s a tall, handsome young lord, and the show is looking for a white actor who uses the RP accent. He’s scheduled to shoot in the week commencing September 20th.
  • Lieutenant, in his 20’s. The character is described as an athletic, physically fit, and disciplined warrior. Appearance-wise, they’re looking for someone not white, with Middle Eastern descent mentioned. This bears the hallmarks of a Dothraki character description. He’s set to shoot several days across three weeks, between mid-September and mid-November.

There’s a lot of mention of RP this time around. To explain, the show tends to use RP accent around King’s Landing for its major well-to-do characters. People from the lower class like Davos use a different accent, and Northerners sound more well, northern. So RP often points toward King’s Landing but it’s not a guarantee.

So what do you think, readers? Who is that suspicious-looking person interrupting the nightly patrol? Which Gate is being guarded this time- Winterfell, Castle Black or another? Have at it!

  1. Will we ever see a casting announcement for role of “The Crannogman”? It could be something like, a white actor in his 40s with height no more than 5 feet 5. Role includes scenes with main cast and a major revelation.

  2. Atleast a couple of these are going to be young lords/knights participating in the tourney at Harrenhal

  3. For those wondering, RP stands for “Received Pronunciation”. It’s sometimes referred to as “The Queen’s English” or “BBC English”.

  4. Oh god I’m so terrible at this lol.At least in the past we had some clue.I guess it’s understanable they are casting people for KL because there is nobody left there appart from Cersei,Jaime and Qyburn.I’m really curious about the gate in the north what would that be?And I though we were done with Essos but apparently not

  5. The warrior is really the most interesting. We’ve pretty much been introduced to all the main book characters who would fit this bill, other than maybe Victarion and Connington. They’ve been dropped almost for sure. So who the heck is this and what role might they have?

  6. Matsuki:
    Jon Con?!

With only 15 episodes remaining, not enough time to do fAegon/Blackfyre plot. In any case, Varys is supporting Dany and not Blackfyres.

  7. Amar,

We already saw Howland Reed in the show and he is taller than that so that won’t be a requirment.Plus Jojen was really tall too

  8. It’s not possible to guess based on book knowledge anymore. All these seem to be new non-book characters. I am mostly intrigued by the warrior and the northern gate guard.

  9. Priest is surely master marwyn.

Apart from that boy who is of north everyone else is related to south which iam sure of ..
And filming’s on September and October also makes that more south than north

  10. Yeah, you can forget about the Crannogmen being short. That’s long off the table.

Jojen was 5’10” and Howland-stunt guy was pretty normal height.

  11. At last…. Some casting news! Could the priest be some type of Septon Meribald character to interact with Brienne and Pod, given that they’re returning back North through the RL..cue hanging by TBWOB and the Hound?

  12. Jenny:
    Amar,

We already saw Howland Reed in the show and he is taller than that so that won’t be a requirment.Plus Jojen was really tall too

My comment was more of a wishful thought. Disappointing that in ToJ flashback, HR was not shorter than Ned. I doubt if HR casting news will be made public.

  13. dragonbringer:
    Priest is surely master marwyn.

If they were going to cast Marwyn, they’d surely need the actor for more than one week. And I don’t think there’d be any reason to label it “Priest”.

My own guess: we’ll see that guy when Dany lands in Westeros and stages a ceremonial coronation for herself as Queen of the Seven Kingdoms.

I’ll speculate that the General is a minion for Cersei, since she’ll need some minor characters to provide exposition, etc. about their deteriorating military situation.

  14. Warrior = Strong Belwas?

    Could it be?

He’s supposed to be tanned and fat but maybe they decided to change that

  15. Rhaenys Stark:
    Warrior= Howland Reed? PLEASE

I hope you are correct but “tough-looking bruiser with the attack skills of a pit bull” doesn’t look similar to the actor who played HR in ToJ flashback. He was pretty average looking. Maybe someone new in Dorne as it has no male characters at the end of season 6?

  16. Florian,

If they were casting a young Barristan they would put out a casting description that specified features akin to Ian McElhinney’s.

  17. Amar,

Maybe. Now that I think about it I don’t believe they”ll announce important parts at all (like Howland Reed or Rhaegar). Probably only minor characters. Lyanna’s part for S6 wasn’t announced either right?

  18. The Lieutenant sounds a bit like the Dothraki equivalent of Grey Worm. I can see Daenerys wanting them to have a recognizable battle leader in the same way the Unsullied do; Daario seemed to take up that role to an extent at the end of last season, but he was left behind in Meereen. The Dothraki fighting style is different to that of the Unsullied as well, so having a Dothraki voice on her War Council would make sense.

Given that the Merchant and Lovely Lady are to be of unspecified ethnicity, I wonder if they are to appear in Dorne or Oldtown. Those living in the former are of mixed ethnicity, and the latter is somewhere that a prosperous merchant would gravitate to. Beyond that, I cannot see an Essosi location unless Daenerys has a stop off point before reaching Westeros (Volantis again, maybe?) but given the ground she will need to cover in two shortened seasons I think that unlikely.

The General, City Guard and Young Lord all seem to be for locations in the south of Westeros. While KL is the obvious location, Oldtown is also a possibility. I do wonder if either the General or Young Lord is perhaps one of the Highgarden bannermen, sent by Olenna to Daenerys after she reaches Westeros? Or, given that Sam has reached Oldtown, could they be casting a Lord for the city? The City Guard is likely to be for either Oldtown or KL, and the mention of the suspicious-looking person is intriguing. Could Jorah head to the Citadel for a cure and try to sneak into the city? Or, is this related to the fall of KL? Could she try to take KL from within in a slightly similar way to Yunkai or Meereen?

The Priest is an interesting one. I agree it could be a Maester rather than a Septon, and if so then it is likely to be Oldtown rather than KL (unless it is perhaps Pycelle’s replacement, sent by the Citadel). Surely every septon in Westeros was not obliterated by the Green Trial?

The Gate Guard I would place at either Castle Black or Winterfell, though I would tend towards the latter given the number of scenes he seems to be in. The castle was deserted when Bran and Rickon fled at the end of season 2, and the Bolton men will not be kept on. New faces are required, and with Bran hopefully heading south, other Northern lords presumably being summoned to Winterfell to bend the knee, and the BwB heading north, a Winterfell Gate Guard would be busy.

The Warrior is one that I have absolutely no clue on. Someone with the BwB, maybe? Or a thug for hire contracted by the Lannisters? There is a lot of dialogue and a longer availability required compared to the other parts, so this character will presumably be interacting with a lot of people.

In any case, exciting to finally have some fuel for speculation!

  19. Perhaps the “Young Lord” casting is vague on purpose? If we get the full R+l=J confirmation we should/need to see Rhaeghar, no? At least I hope so

  20. Joey,

Rhaegar is possible, I don’t think they will include the tourney though as we have already heard the entire story.
My first thought for this role was a potential random suitor to Dany. She did say that she would be looking at the possibility of shoring up alliances through marriage.

  21. Yes!! ahhhhh more speculation and leaks! I love it! 🙂 I can’t wait until next year!

I agree that Prince R. Howland Reed, maybe even a young Robert B. might be casted. Also some northern lords? Yessss!!!

  22. ghost of winterfell,

I guess that makes sense, the casting for Lyanna was probably top secret because the description should be “young woman age 20 or so who very clearly looks like she could be Kit Harington’s mother.”

  23. Think we are going to see quite a lot of Dorne in S7 – perhaps with Dany landing there or having naval battle off the shore?

  24. Rhaenys Stark:
    Amar,

Maybe. Now that I think about it I don’t believe they”ll announce important parts at all (like Howland Reed or Rhaegar). Probably only minor characters. Lyanna’s part for S6 wasn’t announced either right?

Yes the casting call for Lyanna was announced,

    http://watchersonthewall.com/game-of-thrones-season-6-new-characters-and-casting-summary/

    “Aged 18 – 20. She’s a stunner of a brunette”

I agree with you that HR casting will not be announced.

  25. Amar,

That’s most likely the casting call for the maid Arya impersonates, not Lyanna. Lyanna didn’t really have multiple scenes (they used a brief flash in one previous episode, but that’s stretching it; the actress wasn’t even credited).

  26. The only casting call that says anything to me is the Lieutenant. I was hoping we’d get a specific Dothraki commander for their hordes, not unlike Grey Worm in the beginning (though of course he’s more of a character on his own right by now.) It’s nice to see that’s apparently happening.

The others are a big mystery. Most of them seem to be small parts, though, so I wouldn’t worry that we’re missing some new character. As for the non-white ones, I guess it could point to Dany stopping by Volantis, but Oldtown is also a very heterogeneous city, and then there’s Dorne, so it doesn’t have to be Essos.

Would they really use the term “priest” for a “maester”? Isn’t that just wishful thinking for those of us hoping Marwyn will appear? Last year when maesters were requiered the casting calls used the term “measter”, and for the septons “priest.” So it’s most likely a septon, not a maester.

  27. Do we even need Howland Reed? Seems Bran can fullfil this role. At this point introducing Howland just to reveal it to Jon and Jon is more likely to trust his own brother than stranger.

  28. What are the chances Jorah’s quest for a greyscale cure will be a large part of the season? That journey could take him to a variety of places and encounter a lot of people we haven’t seen before.

  29. Priest Marwyn or the High Sparrow’s successor.
Warrior For a moment, I thought of Victarion. Silly me.
    Gate Guard Brandon Stark.
City Guard A guard in Oldtown.
    Lovely Lady Prostitute.
Young Lord in his late 20’s Robert Baratheon. Sleeps with prostitute.
    Lieutenant, in his 20’s Dothraki.

  30. Geralt of Rivia:
Do we even need Howland Reed? Seems Bran can fullfil this role. At this point introducing Howland just to reveal it to Jon and Jon is more likely to trust his own brother than stranger.

It would be immensely angering if they cut HR. But chances are that they won’t. They made it a point to show and name HR during ToJ flashback.

  31. Lieutenant is def dothraki we need a “name” just like with wildlings CV and unsullied

gate guard is goona be at castle black I think..maybe person that finds bran and Meera then kinda becomes the third in that group to get him to winterfell

and I am goona wallow in fangirlness and convince myself young Lord is rheagar ….don’t convince me otherwise.i am enjoying it too much lol

  32. Geralt of Rivia,

Regardless of who tells him, I think Jon is not going to receive the news all that well. Getting murdered by his own men didn’t make him super angry and bitter but the truth about his parents might actually do the job. And how could it not? He was lied to all his life. He pretty much based a lot of his worth on being the son of Ned Stark to then find out that he is the son of a different man. Knowing Jon he might even feel guilty about his own existence knowing that he’s the product of a union that unleashed such destruction. The poor guy will have to deal with all that internal struggle while also dealing with his new aunt, his sister’s insecurities and not to mention her creeper and the Others.

  33. I think speculators need to start looking outside of Kings Landing for these RP roles. It’s High Garden and Old Town that need more heroic looking people, Kings Landing will likely be more victims. They might even cameo Griff and Young Griff on the High Garden side.

Although I’m a bit partial to the Lovely Lady being Lady Taena Merryweather because of the sexy and the talky.

  34. Gate Guard sounds like comic relief, like a Dolorous Edd 2.0. Watch, there will be an increasingly wacky series of events/passers through over the course of the season, and Gate Guard will have straight man quips for all of them.

Marwyn isn’t exactly someone with “moral authority,” so I’m not in that school of thought for the priest. But I do want Marwyn to show up.

The general is interesting because I assumed Randyll would step up in that capacity this year, for one side or the other (but probably Cersei). Maybe we’re getting lots of generals and lots of battle strategy scenes over lots of maps? Please?

  35. “warrior” is rhaegar. I hope the first three episodes of s7 are just one long flashback piece of harrenhall and Bob’s rebellion. It would be a bold choice and I’m all about bold choices.

Just leave 4 or 5 episodes to properly cover cleganebowl after that is all.

  36. These casting calls have made my morning. Thanks, Sue! This speculating is what makes the off season so much fun and bearable.

I think the “Gate Guard” is for Winterfell because he’ll be filming for a month and I doubt the show will spend that much time at Castle Black. Like someone else said, there should be a lot of activity in WF with all the people expected to arrive there in S7, so a gate guard would definitely be needed for a “series of scenes”.

I like the idea that the “City Guard” is someone who spots Jorah creeping around Old Town.

I agree with Sue that most of these characters are probably going to be in King’s Landing because of the RP accent. But please gods, don’t let the “Merchant in his 40’s” be in Essos. Let us be rid of that damn place once and for all. I’d prefer it if some in Dany’s group encounter this guy in an inn in Dorne (I never thought I’d prefer Dorne over Essos).

    LadyH:
Could the bull like warrior be Robert Baratheon? The younger version ofcourse.

My initial thought was young Robert too. “Tough-looking bruiser with the attack skills of a pit bull” sounds like Bobby B circa the rebellion, but 35-45 age range is far too old. So, he’s probably a new henchman of Cersei’s.

  37. Just out of curiosity, did we have the casting call for Lyanna leaked last year? If so I’m curious if it was a plain as these descriptions so we simply didn’t guess, or they were just far better at keeping the process and request for that role secret.

Curious as to if it’s possible we’ll even see a casting call for Rhaegar, or if they’d be so secretive about it we wouldn’t know if it was out there.

  38. Danny,

Not to mention Jon would think that he was a product of rape. That’s going to be something very hard to digest. Jon finding out the truth is what I am looking forward to the most next season.

  39. Specific mention of an “inn” re: the Merchant makes me wonder if Brienne/Pod/Hound/BWB and possibly Arya/Melisandre could converge for an altered version of the Inn at the Crossroads events from FFC.

  40. ghost of winterfell,

I wonder if that knowledge will provoke in Jon some kind of resentment against Ned or rejection of the Starks as a whole. I doubt it, but I would be very interesting to explore that issue.

  41. Jon Snowpenhauer:

There was a casting call for a ‘Young Stunner’, but there is debate (as seen above) as to whether this was Lyanna or the ‘Face’ that Arya used to gain access to The Twins as a servant.

Thinking back, one casting call I really have difficulty remembering from last year is one that resembled Aerys. I know when the trailers were released there was a lot of discussion regarding the shadow on the wall that did turn out to be Jaime’s attack on Aerys, but at the time I recall trying to match up that part with the casting calls that had been released and failing to come to any concrete conclusions.

in all honesty I doubt we see the casting call for rhaegar….we had a couple last year that COULD have been Lyanna but as someone said above thread the one most people focused on was actually the call for “Ayra” in the Frey Pie scene.

I hope we see him..would LOVE to see him on screen..but I dont know that we will have any clue until it actually happens
..cant remember last season.. was “promise me” ned scene specifically spoiled or were we just sure we were gonna see it because of outside filming??

  43. selena,

Well I don’t think it was until during the season. But I think everybody expected it because of logical conclusions really. And we all got confused with the young stunner casting. We assumed it was Lyanna and it turn out to be Arya in disguise lol

  44. Brown Ben,

I think she will too in the books but I thought it got cut from the show. Why to free more slaves?I thought we were done with that.Maybe to pick up Kinvara and all the red priests. With the pace they are going I thought they would skip Volantis but maybe not who knows

  45. Alba Stark: There was a casting call for a ‘Young Stunner’, but there is debate (as seen above) as to whether this was Lyanna or the ‘Face’ that Arya used to gain access to The Twins as a servant.

Robert Aramayo said he filmed the interior ToJ scene in December. The “young stunner” filmed in August or September. So that pretty much confirms the casting call for the young stunner was not Lyanna.

I don’t think we ever saw a casting call for Aerys, Lyanna Stark, or Lyanna Mormont. Seems like the major characters with little screentime were kept under wraps. If Rhaegar is ever cast, I expect they’ll keep that casting call hush-hush.

  46. A Dornish Tyrell,

Or he could reject his Targaryen connection and cling closer to his Stark ones? It’s also possible that Bran will arrive with the knowledge of the entire truth, as Jenny said, which could make it easier for him to accept his reality. It could go any way I guess.

  47. selena: in all honesty I doubt we see the casting call for rhaegar….we had a couple last year that COULD have been Lyanna but as someone said above thread the one most people focused on was actually the call for “Ayra” in the Frey Pie scene.

We did not get any indication about an inside scene, there was speculation as someone else posted below you that it would be there simply due to the outside scene being known to be filmed, but there was no preseason leak that I’m aware of. Was obviously much harder to leak a scene that was shot inside, but I am pretty sure I’d remember, last year I was devouring GoT related material like a hawk, especially through the numerous casting leaks that took place after S5.

That said, I tend to believe they’d keep the Rhaegar part much more of a secret if not offer it to specific actors, or in specific circles.

To think we’re almost still an entire year off from the show, to quote the great Charlie Brown, “Ugh”.

  48. ghost of winterfell,

That’s certainly a possibility… however, I think that the truth of not being Ned’s son will hit him harder than finding out he’s a Targ… S7 will tell. 🙂

  49. Only one person so far has suggested Casterly Rock as the place where we might find all those posh accents, but that makes a lot of sense to me. Tyrion needs to put his encyclopædic knowledge of the drainage system to good use and infiltrate!

  50. ghost of winterfell,

Yeah I really believe Bran will be the one to tell Jon.It’s the least convoluted thing plus I remember in one of the bts after the finale Bryan Cogman was like now that Bran is going forth to meet his family we felt that this was an important information for him to have.Plus it will fuck Jon up all the same there is no thing for the rape thing to be added on it

  51. Firannion:
Only one person so far has suggested Casterly Rock as the place where we might find all those posh accents, but that makes a lot of sense to me. Tyrion needs to put his encyclopædic knowledge of the drainage system to good use and infiltrate!

Sadly, I don’t think we’ll ever get to see the rock unless Tyrion goes there specifically. Assuming he goes just to take it over and rule post show though, I can’t imagine them having the time devoted to him just taking some episodes to claim it. Jamie and Cersei’s story ends in Kings Landing on the show I’d imagine. With their budget and with what is left time-wise with the 13’ish episodes we have left, I just don’t see a prolonged siege and either banishment or running to Casterly Rock.

Obviously we know we’re getting it in the books, and I am still holding onto some hope we’ll get it in the books, even if it’s only for a split second via Tyrion post invasion and heading into the finale with ice and fire, but there isn’t anyone in the rock currently that the show would follow, and again, I see Jaime and Cersei ending their story together in King’s Landing, whether Jamie or Cersei survive that and move on, not sure, but their combined story ends there in some way in my opinion.

  52. Igziabeher:
Warrior could be Brandon Stark and young lord could be young Littlefinger.

If you mean Brandon Stark, Ned’s brother, no, 35-45 is way too older. And there’s no way that’s Littlefinger, seeing as they specify an RP accent (unless things are getting even weirder in that department).

  53. Young Lord, I think this might be Rheagar ( I hope )
I too wonder how Jon will take the news and who/how it will be delivered to him.
I also hope Rheagar and Lyanna were married so Jon is legit!

  54. Jon Snowpenhauer: I see Jaime and Cersei ending their story together in King’s Landing, whether Jamie or Cersei survive that and move on, not sure, but their combined story ends there in some way in my opinion.

Interesting… and I agree that their story will end in KL. But in that case, I would think their story would end in Season 7, because I can’t imagine Cersei surviving in KL till the final season.

  55. Kay: Interesting… and I agree that their story will end in KL. But in that case, I would think their story would end in Season 7, because I can’t imagine Cersei surviving in KL till the final season.

I partially agree… season 7 will be the season we get rid of the “distractions” (big or small)..Cersie,LF,Euron..they will all bow out by the end of season 7 so everything is focused on the BIG bad, the Nights King and the real war in season 8.
We have 7 episodes this season. I for one dont see Cersie making it past episode 4 (maybe 5)..pretty much about the time Dany arrives and takes over Kings Landing but
I actually see Jamie making it to at least the final Battle of season 8, even if he doesnt survive, and going out as a hero fulfulling his redemption arc.

  56. Young and tall lord could be Sansa’s potential suitor from the Vale or some Dickon’s pal, if Sam’s brother needs someone to interact with. Anyway, his appearance will be rather short IMHO.

  57. Come on guys clearly the Gate guard is at Winterfell and he catches melisandre lingering around the outside. Right?

  58. Ah, casting news.
What a sight for sore eyes!
I have no idea who any of these castings could be, although I’d have to guess at least a few are characters we’ll see in Oldtown.

I love not knowing. It’s quite fun, at least to me.

  59. I find myself eager for next summer already.. and I live in Arizona and am already tired of the heat this summer.. But i want thrones!

  60. British Accent Watch here. RP doesn’t really help us narrow down because it’s used for all highborn Westerosi characters outside the North and Dorne, and not always then: although Robb and Jon have northern accents, Sansa, Arya and Bran speak in RP (Maisie sometimes remembers to sound a bit northern, and also occasionally her West Country vowels come through), as did/do Jojen & Meera and the Boltons.

(Littlefinger, as mentioned above, is an exception, although this seems to be more to do with him putting ever less effort into his accent – in season one he does actually seem to be attempting to sound English – plus increasingly growling his lines, which has left him sounding like a pirate.)

Per the OP, lowborn King’s Landing characters tend to have a broad generic cockney accent that no-one under 70 actually speaks any more in London. Davos is probably the wrong character to cite, though, because he has a totally anomalous accent: despite growing up in King’s Landing, he has a strong northern English accent. I’ve always wondered about this choice. I’d guess it’s because Liam Cunningham (who has a fairly strong Irish accent IRL) couldn’t do a convincing southern or cockney accent. He’s great in the role, so I’m not really bothered by that compromise.

Anyway, the point is: the casting agents have gotten very good at being vague in these casting calls, and they only go to a public call if they can’t cast the role from people they already know. Still fun to speculate though…

  61. No way will they put Aegon and Jon Con in the show. They already merged Jon’s arc with Jorah’s. In the books JC got greyscale, and in the show Jorah even got one of JC’s more memorable lines about dreaming of going home.

I don’t think these will be book characters. If we spend time in Oldtown the young lord may be Leo Tyrell, since Willas and Garlan were cut, and the beautiful woman may be Sarella Sand, but other than that I think these will be original show characters.

  62. Kilgore Tully: Gate Guard sounds like comic relief, like a Dolorous Edd 2.0. Watch, there will be an increasingly wacky series of events/passers through over the course of the season, and Gate Guard will have straight man quips for all of them.

You’re right: This definitely sounds like an Eddish comic role. I wonder where, though.

  63. I’m surprised by how many people here still seem to be holding out strong hopes for Rhaegar/Tourney at Harrenhal/young Robert/young Petyr/Brandon Stark flashbacks. I have a feeling that we’re kind of done with all that. I don’t expect to see Bran getting a whole lot more history lessons in the time that’s left, and it isn’t really necessary to unrolling the rest of the narrative. There just needs to be some moment of confirmation of Jon’s legitimacy (if he IS legitimate), and that can be done either via Howland turning up or some artifact being discovered in the Winterfell crypts.

  64. I don’t know how much Jon’s legitimacy matters at this point seeing as how he was declared king in the north in spite of being illegitimate. He already technically rules half of Westeros, however, being illegitimate would give Dany a stronger claim and the story is really barreling towards this surprise of Jon being the true king. Now, for what it’s worth, I do think that he’s legitimate. Rhaegar had a fixation with Aegon the Conqueror, so having 2 wives would be in line with that. Also the fact that his last word was Lyanna’s name hints that they were married, probably because Elia couldn’t survive having another child and “the dragon has 3 heads. There must be one more”. That Dany vision in the house of the undying leads me to believe that not only did Rhaegar marry Lyanna, but that Elia was also okay with it. The crypts of Winterfell theory is interesting, but I think Howland has to make an appearance, being the only survivor of the ToJ.

  65. The Black Goat,

I´m pretty sure there is no time or budget for the Tourney but one thing I ´m positive: they HAVE to show Rhaegar and Lyanna doing something, anything…people who don´t read the books think Jon is either Robert´s or Aerys´!! uh,sorry…this comment was aimed at Firannion

  66. No more random nude scenes for the 15 yo boy demographic! We have only 7 episodes this season and I need all. 50 minutes of each to be important to the story. Also no more awkward Mereenese drinking games! 🙂

IT was mentioned more than once in the show that Rhaegar “obducted” Lyanna, and per Sansa in the crypt raped and murdered her. So I disagree.

  68. Darn, for a minute there I thought the Lovely Lady would be Jaime keeping his promise to Bronn of a titled lady as wife with a castle handy. But since she’s specifically mentioned as a courtesan, then no wife. Doesn’t mean he, Bronn, doesn’t find a house of ill repute somewhere to drown his sorrows.

Maybe some upstart in KL decided to take over Littlefinger’s territory and open a house of his own in which the Lovely Lady works. Ah, Cersei probably did it to LF again, not only make decisions last season that got all his whorehouses closed and his wine destroyed, but now has probably burned down some of the buildings he might have owned. He will be jet-packing all over the place next season.

The Warrior has me most intrigued – a white “top-end actor” meaning star? With the proper accent and pit-bull demeanor? You guys have any idea who could be cast, even if we don’t know the true nature of the part?

  69. WallyFrench: No more random nude scenes for the 15 yo boy demographic! We have only 7 episodes this season and I need all. 50 minutes of each to be important to the story. Also no more awkward Mereenese drinking games!

Well said. especially about the drinking games. There were so many other ways they could have used Tyrion and Gray Worm and Missandei. During season 3, Tyrion was the soul of effective action, trying to discern what Cersei was up to, figuring out how to use the wildfire, determining where Stannis would be most likely to land and how they would counter it. He was practically useless in Meereen, not even thinking far enough ahead to warn Gray Worm to have extra men watching the ships in the harbor.

The only part I liked this season was the scene w the dragons and the scenes at the end, once Dany was back. I love GW and Missy, don’t get me wrong. I need to see true affection between two people on this show; I need to see GW effective at his job and I’m glad Missandei is there for Dany. I guess the jokes were ok. I’m thinking Dinklage/Tyrion as Hand of the Queen is going to be a dynamo in both season 7 and 8. He will be in his element.

  70. Thronetender,

I wished time had been found for a scene between Tyrion and Theon to talk about Sansa and other Westeros news.

Does anyone know how many scenes would typically be filmed in a week?

  71. While I am not sure that any of these casting notices relate to Rhaegar (perhaps the Young Lord at a push, but I think that is more likely to be linked to the current timeline given the deaths of so many lords in season 6) I do think that the time has come to cast someone to play the part. And some of the important parts from season 6 – particularly Lyanna Stark and Lyanna Mormont – weren’t obvious from the casting notices for that season. I don’t think they would massively want to advertise that they were casting someone for the part of Rhaegar.

While the show has established in both season 1 (with Robert and Ned in the crypts) and season 5 (with Sansa and LF in the crypts) that the “official” version of events is that Rhaegar abducted and raped Lyanna, in season 4 we saw Oberyn tell Tyrion that Rhaegar had left Elia for another woman and Barristan spoke more than once, in seasons 3-5, in defense of Rhaegar. So, while I think that the timeline massively supports Rhaegar as Jon’s father (season 1 establishes that Lyanna’s disappearance sparked off a war that lasted a year, and season 6 establishes that Lyanna is found at the end of that war) I do think that there is still an open question regarding how complicit Lyanna was in her disappearance. So that may be something that could be explored. Ultimately, I think that there are 4 Rhaegar/Lyanna scenes that they could do:

    1) Rhaegar leaving a pregnant Lyanna behind as he goes to KL to gather forces for the Battle of the Trident.
    2) If a wedding ceremony took place, then that could be shown.
    3) Lyanna’s disappearance, establishing as I said above how complicit she was in it.
    4) The Tourney of Harrenhal. While I would love to see the tourney in all it’s glory, I think that season 6 established that Bran sees these visions in real time (other than the flashes of images at the start of 606) and they last no more than a few minutes, while the tourney takes place over a few days. That said, there are a couple of scenes from the tourney that could work – either Brandon and Ned confronting Lyanna after she is crowned Queen of Love and Beauty, or Lyanna and Rhaegar’s first meeting.

  72. I was actually thinking about casting notices before I opened my laptop and here they are!

The gate guard is obviously based in Winterfell imo, especially since we’re set to have a lot of people travelling in that direction. I bet his scenes are going to be Monty Python inspired. “What is your name? What is your quest?”

I guess Dany could make a pit stop to Volantis, but at the same time we might have a scene with Jorah going to find his cure (hence the merchant and prostitute). KL and Oldtown should also be pretty diverse places too because they have harbors and a lot of trading activity.

Waiting for any casting notices that hint at Bran’s visions.

  73. BeautyBrienne,
The “Gate Guard, in his 20’s” could the title be a cover-up for the casting of Rhaegar? I’m not familiar with if they do that sort of thing in order to not spoil too much, I think it said great face, wit and charisma” that could come into play for flashback with him and Lyanna.

  74. ygritte:

If Rhaegar ends up with a Mancunian accent, collective shit will be lost ^^

    ygritte:
Man, I really wish we were. That place is boring as heck to me.

Cheer up ! Maybe it won’t be Essos, perhaps it will be Dorne, the second most boring place 😉

  75. ACME,

Haha 🙂 well on the positive side there’s finally some hope for Dorne now that the dynamics are changing. Now they just need to give the Sand snakes a mission that takes them on a long off screen journey.

Mancunian? Ah I missed that bit. All hopes=dashed.

  76. The gate guard is probably at Castle Black.

Northern, shooting in the colder months, a series of scenes (Bran / White Walkers arriving at the Wall / the Wall collapsing).

Wit, timing and charisma perhaps for a bit of banter with Edd or his fellow Crows.

Don’t see where or why there could be any need for scenes with guards at Winterfell, which is the only other Northern location that we’re likely to encounter.

  77. I think the days of people from the book being cast are gone. My interest in casting has suffered as a result.
Just hope next season has less of the silliness of this season and starts on an upwards trajectory again after a couple of weaker seasons. For me, the show has gone from great to good which is a shame but not a disaster.

  78. Mathew Royle-Evatt,

I’m copying and pasting part of our response from our FAQ here-

Auditions for speaking roles are not open calls, and you would need to have an acting agent to get an audition with the show. If you’re looking to be an extra, you can apply with the local extras agencies that support the show in each country.

  79. LordDavos,

I’m hoping we’ll get a scene like that next season. We can’t have Daenerys turning up in Westeros completely blind to the ongoing politics of the Seven Kingdoms.

I’m hoping they’ll include some war council scenes in which Varys could possibly mention the Starks’ recapture of Winterfell, during which we might get some reaction from Tyrion and Theon.

And some acknowledgment of Jon Snow’s existence has to be brought to Daenerys’ awareness at some point.

They’ll probably also want to re-establish the fact that Tyrion has actually met Jon and was on good terms with him, since that occurred all the way back in Season 1.

  80. GRRM has indicated that Willas and Garlan Tyrell would have bigger roles in the next couple books. I wonder if Willas may be introduced as the “Young Lord”, a distant Tyrell cousin who inherits the Reach now that main branch of the family, Mace, Loras, and Margaery, are dead. That would bring the show back closer in line with books correcting the earlier omission of Loras’ older brother.

  81. Newbietothegame,

Me too. Anybody who still doesn’t get that Rhaegar is Jon’s father simply isn’t paying attention. And can’t have been paying attention since Season 1.

The producers can’t spend precious minutes explaining things further to people who can’t be bothered to catch the drift.

They may well show Rhaegar and Lyanna or the Hrrenhla Tourney briefly, perhaps in a fleeting S6-Mad King-style flashback. But I don’t think people should bank on it.

That reveal in the Season 6 finale very much felt like the culmination of the whole mystery, not the start of a more comprehensive explanation.

  82. My guess is they are casting Rhaegar Targaryen with the handsome man in his 20s. The priest may serve as the person who marries Lyanna and Rhaegar. There are a lot of military characters being cast which may indicate Westerosi fighting against Daenerys or flashback scenes of Robert’s Rebellion.

  83. Ramsay’s 20th Good Man,

Yes. I thought the season had good pacing but it was at the expense of some discussion or reflection scenes which are definitely needed. Why wouldn’t Theon bring Tyrion up to date about Sansa? It is something I don’t get about the shortened seasons – there’s quite a lot that has been pushed aside in favour of fast-paced story. Is this a result of being off book?
But those scenes you mentioned sound sensible to me for next season.

  84. LordDavos,

Stuff like Theon and Tyrion is a result of it being boring and wasteful to use too much screentime to rattle off information that the audience knows.

  85. Aldebaran:
    LordDavos,

How would that be boring??? It’s not about an info dump; it’s about character development! Wouldn’t you want to see how Tyrion would react to finding out that Sansa was 1) still alive, 2) on the run, 3) seeking a brother whom Tyrion knows and respects, 4) a victim of protracted rape and torture by a sadist? Just hearing whether or not he refers to her as ‘my wife’ would tell the audience a LOT that we do NOT know. What he’s still capable of feeling is a hell of a lot more interesting to me than the next battle scene.

  86. Thronetender,

Agreed 100%. I loved the dragon scene and battle at slavers bay was good too.

I think Grey Worm should have died and left Barristan the Bold alive, but that’s a minor point. I just hope with a shortened season they don’t have any scenes that are useless to the story. It kills the GoT addict in me to see the waste of precious time! 🙂

  87. So, just a curious northerner passing through….

How would those who want to look at applying for these roles, go about it?

  88. Posting this again, from our FAQ:

Sorry, we can’t help you get an audition! We’re a fan site and not officially connected to Game of Thrones or HBO. We post articles about casting for fan enjoyment only!

Good point, how else are we going to know Jon is legit if we don’t actually see it?

  90. Danny,

Yes!! I have thought this from the beginning. As satisfying as it was for OUR validation that R+L=J, Jon Snow probably won’t take it that well..

  91. Phillip M Cappadora Jr,

Jesus guy, take a bloody hint. Your path to fame and fortune isn’t thru this fan site. You don’t get drafted by the New York Giants (GRRM’s fav NFL team) by going to ESPN.com.

  92. Lieutenant, in his 20’s. The character is described as an athletic, physically fit, and disciplined warrior. Appearance-wise, they’re looking for someone not white, with Middle Eastern descent mentioned. This bears the hallmarks of a Dothraki character description. He’s set to shoot several days across three weeks, between mid-September and mid-November.(((( This is my character. I want this. I com from Afghanistan)))

  94. The young lord may be Talla’s betrothed. Last season she mentioned she was to marry someone, and in general Sam’s little sister has to serve some plot twist. Hardly she not cast for the sole purpose of lending a dress for Gilly – that could have been done by Sam’s mother too. So, Talla must be in the show for a purpuse and her betrothed, too.

  95. Nic Furlong,

Well that depends if you’re a beautiful woman, leave your contact info here and I’ll be in touch. If you’re a dude, then e-mail HBO.

  96. HunterMac87,

Yeah and by the time it comes on, we’ll be in the middle of the monsoon making the heat even worse. The good thing is that for much of the time we are waiting for GOT, we can go outside without getting second degree burns…

  97. Maybe the “suspicious looking” is the Knight Of The Laughing Tree in a Tourney at Harrenhal flashback?

  98. Marlo:
Where will be the casting or where can i send my portfolio? Cheers

REALLY?? You are third bloke asking in this thread. I you would bother reading through the posts you could see the replies from the moderator. This is a fansite!

  99. Amar,

It could be Jon Content and Egg, because the Lord is in his 20th handsome and Content may well be in his 40 to 45, that would make sense because Content was best friends with the Rheagar.

  100. TYTOS lannister,

That’s all auto correct, I meant Connington, makes sense, but here’s what everyone is missing, Varys is a bad bad man, he wants fire and blood, and don’t be surprised if he is going to do something major. He wants the Throne!

Hey Sue, it appears there is some confusion with folks thinking this site is involved with the actual casting. Maybe the description of the site should be tweaked to …for Breaking and Casting News?

  102. Newbietothegame: Hey Sue, it appears there is some confusion with folks thinking this site is involved with the actual casting. Maybe the description of the site should be tweaked to …for Breaking and Casting News?

We could literally state in the title of the website that we don’t work for HBO and people would still post those things. This happens every year, in every post where we post about casting and it happened at WiC, as well. We’ve been getting emails about it since the show started. People just really want to be on GoT but they don’t pay attention to the written words at all.

It doesn’t matter what’s in the tagline. People don’t read the tagline when they’re interested in auditioning. It’s even addressed in our FAQ. So that’s on these people for not reading the information in this post or anywhere on the website.

  103. Sue the Fury,

LOL, I did notice they don’t read the posts in the thread. I was thinking to myself ‘how did they not catch Sue’s posts about casting?’ One was in bold lettters…oh well.

  104. dragonbringer,

I think D&D said that Belwas appeared when Tyrion was freed in the fighting pits from his chains with Jorah. Pretty sure he’s already been introduced and left behind.

  105. I think David Oakes who played Juan Borgia on “The Borgias” and George, Duke of Clarence on ” The White Queen,” would make an excellent Rhaegar Targaryen.

  106. Could be a long shot, since they specifically want a white actor, but could the priest be Moqorro or Benerro?

  107. When I saw The Warrior bio, I instantly thought of Vinnie Jones. I know, he’s too old, and he’d have to convincingly hide his distinctive accent, but still…

  108. Sword of the Morning:
For those wondering, RP stands for “Received Pronunciation”. It’s sometimes referred to as “The Queen’s English” or “BBC English”.

Like? “How now brown cow” and ‘The rain in Spain falls mainly down the Drain” types and spoken with a plum in your mouth (or stuffed up ones asshole!) 😀

So no of yer “Gould Blimey Geezer’ types allowed (like me wiv a souf London ‘innit’ accent can apply. What a pity – LOL 😀

  109. FarcicalAquaticCeremony,

I want to see rhaeger so badly and I anticipate it to be his interactions with lyanna. I want to see them on screen together so everyone will finally realize it wasnt a “kidnap” or “”rape”

  110. LadyStark,

Yes, I hope this is what happens. I want him to know the truth and I want to see rhaeger so badly and his interactions with lyanna, so everyone knows it wasn’t a rape. Tyrion and Jon also like each other and I feel like that will help when Jon meets Dany!

  111. Why isn’t anyone talking about the if they show rhaeger they will show him with lyanna to finally disprove the rape theory and Tyrion and Jon like each other so I feel like that will help with the meeting between him and Dany. Tyrion will help Jon understand, same with vaerys, he has to know about Jon seeing how he knows almost everything and has always been a friend of the targaryan people.

  112. I thought Devin Oliver already shot his scene as Rhaegar. He’s a musician so, It’s most likely he played the harp at a Tourney at Harrenhal flashback.

  113. dragonbringer,

a priest is not a maestor and they would be pissed at the comparison. priests are obviously men of god while maestors are men of learning and knowledge, who for the most part hate/distrust septons/priests.
