The Red WoOAH! CRIKEY!

3920195637_9282ec95e2_zGuess who’s back!~ Back again!~ Axey’s back!~ Tell a friend!~

TWITTER TIME. If you don’t know what this is, well, that means you’re new. Come sit at our hearth and partake of our meat and mead, and prepare yourself for a trip down Red Woman memory lane… in 140-character increments.

As per, I gather Tweets hashtagged #GameOfThrones, #TheRedWoman, and (new this year) #GoTs6. (For people with more to say than the space taken up by #GameOfThrones will allow.)

We’re still using Storify; it had a few rough patches last season, but smoothed out toward the end. I HIGHLY RECOMMEND using the SLIDESHOW option to view this (UPDATE: just add /slideshow to the STORIFY URL and that should pull it up) (thanks, Alf!) (Or even click HERE. Bam. Slideshow!) … I recommend it especially if your browser is slowed to a crawl by the lumbering size of this sucker. (It’s smaller than last year’s posts by just a bit, so hopefully that helps too.)

Onward!

So that’s it! We’re back, baby! See you next week!

  1. Totally mystified where the Slideshow option is. I don’t see it in Firefox nor Chrome.

  2. Just had a terrible thought: The very last shot of GOT will show Joffrey waking up screaming in bed and telling his second wife, Nymeria Sand, that he’d just had the scariest nightmare.

  3. spacechampion,

In the upper left corner, where it says “Storify by Axey,” hoever your cursor over “Storify,” and click. I’m using firefox, and that’s what worked for me.

    So much fun, as always!!!

However, I forgot a very important rule of thumb when reading Axey’s twitter recap post:

Do not, I repeat, do not take a bite of food, or sip of beverage, whilst reading through, lest you end up spitting said bite of food or sip of beverage all over your computer, or desk, or whatever, from laughing. If you must take a bite of food or sip of beverage, look away from the screen, chew/swallow, then look back at the screen and continue reading.

  4. It would be awesome if you could separate them on two sepeatate slideshows.

I’m only arriving at Meereen and my computer is lagging like hell !

    Anyway, hilarious as always !

    Oh and…

    – Hodor.
    – Confess.
    – Hodor.
    – Confess.
    – Hodor.
    – Confess.

  5. Axey….I am so glad you are back and Tweeting. This was another great night of fun Tweets and some down right clever and bizarre!!

I meant to open up the laptop and join in but once the show started I couldn’t think about Tweeting. I will try and start earlier on Sunday. 😉

And I too want one of those necklaces!!!

  6. Funniest thing I saw someone say was maybe we all misheard Ian McShane. He wasn’t saying “Tits and dragons” he was saying “Tits a draggin”.

  7. Awesome, definitely one of my favorite posts during the season.

It’s like past 3 am here where i live so i tried my best to not wake people up with my laughters but i don’t think that it worked haha!

  8. NedDeadHead:

Al Swearengen is a naughty naughty man.

  9. Thanks for doing these posts, Axey. I’m sure it’s a lot of work, but I love the hell out of them. There are some seriously funny people out there.

  10. R’hllorine. Crying laughing!

Been looking forward to the Twitter Recap the entire off-season. Thank you!!

  11. These Twitter recaps are legendary, and I thought 600 Tweets Was Way too many, until I started to read them and they just flew by! Axey, your talent for comedy and writing with just the proper hint of snarcasm fits these perfectly. This is always my favorite game of thrones review. After last year and Sansa’s wedding night, I said I was done, but I couldn’t stay away. Thank goodness for Axey and his wonderful posts!

  12. Oh some of those were hilarious, others were clever. Loved the tweets. I always look forward to the Twitter Re-Caps, keep them 600+ please. That was very entertaining.

  13. Epic! Thanks Axey!
the Monty Pythonish Dothraki were very wrong… and yet so right… forgot how funny this episode was really…

  14. As always, nothing beats Twitter Recaps by Axey. Thank you for doing this again!

Loved Stannis’ “Before and After” pictures. Don’t worry Stannis, you’re beautiful either way. 🙂

  15. I always felt that the land of always winter was Scotland, and Bear Island was the Isle of Manx. I also felt the wildlings were of Scandinavian descent and the Wight Walkers were native of Scotland, ie, the Picts.

  16. THE TWITS ARE BACK!!!!!!! Man! I love this feature! LOL funny! Thanks so much for your hard work, Axey. Now off to the drug sore to find me some R’hollorelline… 🙂

  17. Nymeria Warrior Queen: then look back at the screen and continue reading.

Excellent advice! Thank you Axey – NWQ is right, all one’s goods across the room will be smeared by half-chewed food missiles if eating and reading your Twitter ‘cap at the same time is attempted. I’ve been waiting for this for a long time. Hilarious, as expected. Laugh out loud, effing hilarious. I needed it today, too.

Ah, good old Melisandre, following some of the oldest grooming advice given to girls: Never go to bed with your make-up on.

  18. Oh my gawd, some of those tweets had me in stitches (I should have copied them so I could us them here but I was having too much fun going through the slides) Excellent work Axey!

Ah, good old Melisandre, following some of the oldest grooming advice given to girls: Never go to bed with your make-up on.

loved the tweet about someone having an account at Sephora

  19. Hooray for Axey Twitter posts! Without a doubt, the best possible way to start the day. Thanks for all your hard work!!

Now please excuse me while I run to work. Will have a few of those Three-eyed Raven tarts to go.

  20. Gosh you work hard! I couldn’t keep up with the tweets at the time. You sure had you’re work cut out for you. Time for me to head back to obscurity after having TWO tweets published in your recap (achievement unlocked Season 6!) – I could only live tweet this week because it was a holiday in Australia. From now on I will have to watch when you guys are all fast asleep 🙁
Thank you for your labour of love!

  21. I was kind of annoyed by the people saying Thorne was “spinning the situation”. He wasn’t! He was being honest, saying what he really thought. From his (narrow, limited) point of view, killing Jon was the right thing to do. That’s what makes him such an interesting character.
It makes me sad that so many people see him as a one-dimensional bad guy because he stabbed Jon…

Apart from that, I loved the recap! The memes were hilarious! Thanks for pulling all of this together!

  22. BigMac,

OK, but I still don’t understand why nobody explained what happened at Hardhome; or if they did, why that wouldn’t change his perspective. It’s not (just) about being nice to the wildlings, it’s about making so they don’t become part of the White Walker army. No matter how much hatred he feels for the wildlings, it seems odd he wouldn’t understand that argument. I would have at least liked a scene where we see his rationale for rejecting that argument; as far as we know from the show, only Sam was told about the stupendous happenings at Hardhome, whereas it should really be the only thing which people are now talking about. I mean, there’s a giant army of zombies heading your way and you decide now is the right moment for a coup? And the wildlings are already south of the wall, what is this going to achieve anyway? Are you going to take your remaining 40 men and go attack them on The Gift? Seems like a plan. So, anyway, I just don’t really understand Thorne’s rationale.

I’m also disappointed by the likelihood that

Thorne and his cronies will be killed by Wun Wun and the gang before they get to see the resurrection of Jon Snow. I would have loved to see their reaction to that.
  23. Super Northener,

Yes, and the North is more like Northern England, just south of Hadrian’s Wall. I’m pretty sure GRRM confirmed this was his inspiration. The Wildlings are definitely the Scots, not the Northerners (who actually speak with Northern English accents, too).

    To me, it’s more like:

North of the Wall = Scotland
    The North = Northern England
Iron Islands = Ireland (or Norway)
    Kings Landing = London
Riverlands/Stormlands/Reach/Westerlands = various counties of England
    Vale = Wales
Dorne = Spain, now fictitiously attached to Britain/Westeros
    Braavos = Switzerland
Old Valyria = Rome or Athens
Rest of Essos = continental Eurasia

  24. Thorne’s problem is his pride – he has hated Jon since Jon first showed up in the Castle Black courtyard as a competent fighter and had the gall to actually try to teach the other Night’s Watch recruits how to fight. His remark to Jon was that Jon was the least useless person there.

I think he does believe Jon and the survivors of Hardhome regarding what happened – he doesn’t care. If the Night’s Watch are going to fight the Others, he, Thorne will be leader, not Jon effing Snow. Nothing could sway him from that, he had planned the mutiny from the first and wasn’t going to miss his chance. I rather hope he gets to see the Night King in action. We’ll see what kind of half-assed apology he has for Jon then. Or, wait, just let Ghost chew his haughty ass off and be done with it. Apology be damned.

  25. Bob Warren:

I see Braavos more as Venice, not just because of the canals but its location on a lagoon, status as a City State, reliance on naval merchants trade and only accessible by sea ( as Venice was in mediaeval times), ruled by non-hereditary elected leader ( Sealord/Doge). The founders of Venice were fleeing Germanic tribes as the Braavosi were fleeing Valyrian rule…

  26. Great work! Thanks for putting this together! Funny and entertaining, took me about an hour to read everything though haha.

  27. I couldn’t sleep and this has been on my mind since Sunday. I didn’t know where else to post it, so here goes. Axey, I’ve already said how I enjoyed your hard work of putting this together so brilliantly each week, and how I enjoy it, so I hope you will forgive my being somewhat off-topic:

Does anyone else think that the shock of Myrcella dying in Jaime’s arms, just after having 5 lovely seconds of being a father, has caused Jaime to have a major attitude change regarding the way to live his life? Even though he showed a superior air in the early episodes, he never seemed to be particularly materialistic, nor concerned with gaining and controlling territory. But listening several times to the speech he gave Cersei, I believe he has had a significant emotional adjustment:

“Fuck prophecy, Fuck Fate. Fuck everyone who isn’t us. We’re the only ones who matter, the only ones in this world. And everything they’ve taken from us, we’re going to take back, and more. We’re going to take everything there is”.

He’s annoyed with Tyrion, which must have had an effect on him. Now Myrcella is dead and Tommen is threatened. This speech sounds to me like he’s going to attempt to become more like Tywin, and start conquering lands and attempt to amass wealth. Which doesn’t bode well for Sansa in the long run. Maybe Jaime is oathbreaker – again. What if Brienne has to protect Sansa from Jaime? Or will she still choose Sansa if the choice is between Sansa and Jaime?

Just wondering … Does this make sense, or am I missing something about the oaths Brienne made? Did she make any oaths to Jaime? Is Jaime going to be the one to knock off some of the Northern lords so that he can have their lands? Though, I would applaud if he was the one to take out Walder Frey.

  28. Ser Not Appearing in this Series,

Most often you can find similarities but not enough to find a perfect match.

There’s a bit of both in Braavos.

If I where to make a comparasion it would be like this:

Beyond the Wall- Definetly the scotish clans like the Picts and so on in Roman times.

The North – ironic this is the hardest for me. I see a bit of England, a bit of medieval Germany and even a bit of Russia..

Riverlands- Ireland and a bit of England.

    The Vale- Switzerland and Germany.

Westerlands- The most English kingdom in my opinion.

The Reach- France. Just France. That’s the very first thing I thought when I heard of the Reach.

KL and the crownlands- London, as for the lands around it I guess mostly England.

    The Stormlands- Wales and England.

    Dorne- Moorish Spain.

Braavos- Venice comes first to mind.

The other free cities- The southern ones are definetly more ”greek/latin”.

The rest of Essos in my opinion is really a mix- Roman, Greek, Middle eastern some indian, even asian influences.

  29. Thronetender,

Oh, Myrcellas death did affect Jaime.

I expect to see this in his relation with Tommen.
In the official preview it says he ”advises Tommen”

I expect he will help Tommen get his wife back. That will anger Cersei no doubt.
He might also begin to do his duty to the family. We do see him in Lannister armor in the trailer.

Yes, people may think Switzerland because of the Iron Bank, but the banks of Venice such as the Banco di Rialto was crucial to the history and development of modern banking in the real world ( as were the banks of Genoa and Florence).

  31. Thanks for the work, always a highlight of the week during GOT Season.
    Among Personal Favorites :
    – “What is Edd may never die”
    – The Raped/murdered Dorne storyline même.

  32. Mihnea:
    Redxgod,

The Ironborn feel more like Vikings to me.

Yes although the word “moot” as in the Iron Islands Kingsmoot is Anglo Saxon. the “witenagemot” (meeting of wise men) was a precursor of the modern Parliament of the United Kingdom.

A moot would have been called ‘thing’ (e.g. thingstead for the place) in Scandinavia.

Ser Not Appearing in this Series: Yes, people may think Switzerland because of the Iron Bank, …

They were more famous for their mercenary work back in the days… not sure that’s in tone with the Vale though.

  34. Reading these tweets is seriously the best way to kill time during my morning commute! I was laughing so hard the other straphangers probably thought I was crazy. Thank you Axey for putting it all together and starting my day with a great laugh 🙂

  35. Just finished reading. SO FUNNY

    – Loving all the Sansa love
    – The Red woman reveal tweets were so funny.

  36. Mihnea:
    Conquest,

I think people just associate the Vale with the mountains of Switzerland.

It may be sheer coincidence but Snowdonia in Wales – a traditional mountain stronghold of Welsh princes -is “Eryri” in Welsh which is either derived from the same Latin root as the English Eyrie (high place), or old Celtic eryr (eagle)…

  37. Thronetender,

I think that if Brienne is the Oathbreaker, she will break her Oath in protecting Sansa.

She has no Oath to protect/be on the side of Jamie.

So if Brienne is the Oathbreaker in EP3 – We will see her go against Sansa. I would be so mad. Brienne would be blacklisted. lol.

I doubt she would do that.

  38. Just like to add my thanks for your hard work Axey. It is appreciated. Saw a couple of things on Reddit that made me chuckle too; someone called Ramsay Marty McFlay and a twist on a book quote “Edd, fetch me a giant” 😀

    Thronetender,
Hi TT *waving as always*. I like your idea. We’ve been expecting Jaime to

have a final break with Cersei before he goes to the Riverlands, but what if they don’t have a massive bust up? At least not yet. Maybe Jaime persuades her to allow him to try and free Marg because it’s what Tommen most wants and their having kids is the best hope to carry on the Lannister line? Cersei seemed unusually self-aware when talking about Myrcella. Perhaps she comes to realise what effect the actions she takes against those she hates have on the ones she loves too. The Lannisters and Tyrells hate each other but have a common enemy in the Sparrows. Their least worst option might be to work together and get Marg, Loras, Cersei and (presumably) Jaime himself off the hook. The enemy of my enemy is my friend type thing.

Or, you know, the complete opposite could happen, or something so truly random and unexpected that no-one could predict it. *fingers crossed for giant flying killer zombie penguin nazi sharks* 😉

  39. I can’t edit my comment in time so I’ll add it here Thronetender what I left out was we have been assuming Jaime

does the horse up the stairs thing in defiance of Cersei because it will infuriate her and he doesn’t care about that anymore, but if your thinking is right his motive and her reaction could both be completely different to what we were expecting.
  40. Lulus Mum,

The problem is that it’s not that Tyrrels and Lannisters hate each other, they never did.
Cersei hates Marg because she is afraid she is the younger and more beautiful that will take everything she holds dear. That’s why she gave weapons to the faith, to take Marg down.
Also Tommen’s kids can’t carry the Lannister line, he is Baratheon.
I personally think that the fact that Cersei mentions her prophecy to Jaime without going into details, and he answers fuck prophecy it’s foreshadowing, that Jaime will so help Marg, despite Cersei’s fear of prophecies. He already tried for peace with Dorne behind her back.
It would be stupid for Cersei to support Jaime freeing Margaery, in her mind he will free her nightmare.

Also if spoilers are true, Jaime will free Margaery in episode 6, and leave KL right after .. doesn’t look good for his relationship with Cersei
  41. Bob Warren,

I wondered about that – I guess I kinda assumed that Jon would have told him that, but no, there is no scene where that happens and you don’t have Thorn’s response. Thorne is a pragmatist and surely could have looked passed his hate for Jon and wildlings for the common good. Or not. Maybe thats why its hard for me to listen to Thorne use logic when saying why he Jon had to be killed, because I think its over shadowed by his tremendous hate for people in general, and Jon in particular. But yeah, I would have liked a scene where he had to explain himself.

  42. Maggie,
    Oh yeah I forgot about

the younger queen bit. I know it’s in the books but did they mention it in the show? I only remember your namesake talking about her becoming a queen, the bit about children and that she didn’t say anything about a valonqar.

I didn’t make it very clear in my post but was thinking about how Jaime might see things if Thronetender’s suggestion is correct, rather than how others would look at the situation. Jaime thinks of Tommen as his and Cersei’s child, a Lannister rather than a Baratheron, so it would be continuing the line in his eyes even if no-one else sees it that way.

As far as I know, as a spoiler but not book reader,

Jaime and Cersei have a final bust up, he goes to the Riverlands and runs into Brienne who is apparently trying to lure him to LSH, but we don’t know what happens after that, or do we? Is there any way he could go north without him and Cersei having that final break beforehand?
  43. Ser Not Appearing in this Series: I see Braavos more as Venice, not just because of the canals but its location on a lagoon, status as a City State, reliance on naval merchants trade and only accessible by sea ( as Venice was in mediaeval times), ruled by non-hereditary elected leader ( Sealord/Doge). The founders of Venice were fleeing Germanic tribes as the Braavosi were fleeing Valyrian rule…

Yeah, if you say “bank” nowadays, you think about Switzerland, but modern banking started in Italy during (or right before) the Renaissance in cities like Florence, Venice, Genoa, Siena… And Braavos totally looks like Venice plus the Colossus of Rhodes!

By the way, Essos always reminded me of Anatolia… And the Free Cities remind me of the Ancient Greek city-states established on its coasts/islands: Halicarnassus, Knidos, Rhodes (and its Colossus!), Cyprus, Miletus, Ephesus, Smyrna, Mytilene, Lesbos, Byzantion, Assos – that interestingly sounds like Essos… I’m sure GRRM had those cities in mind when he created the Free Cities and the Essos continent. Even their names suggest that: Braavos, Lys, Norvos, Pentos (that sounds like the Pontos region), Volantis… so many cities end in S. And some cities contain letter Y in their names: Lys, Myr, Tyrosh… just like Byzantion, Smyrna and Cyprus. 😉

It looks like GRRM took the Ancient Greek city-states of Anatolia and mixed them with the Italian Renaissance. 😀

  44. Lulus Mum:
    Maggie,
    Oh yeah I forgot about

I didn’t make it very clear in my post but was thinking about how Jaime might see things if Thronetender’s suggestion is correct, rather than how others would look at the situation. As far as I know, as a spoiler but not book reader,

Yes the younger and more beautiful was in the show as well. We actually have no idea where Brienne is taking Jaime, but there was never an actual break up in the books either, Jaime burns the letter but Cersei still believe that he will come back.
Which means that the show will have to show Jaime working and thinking without Cersei (they already started it with his letter to Doran) and finally show how he give up on her. I think it’s essential for Jaime to be alienated from Cersei because it happened in the books, and there was a reason. While most people believe Jaime to serve the story only as potential killer of Cersei, i think his dreams and connections with other characters make me think there is another story for him. Most people cheered on Brienne saving Sansa in the last episode but very few remember that Jaime send her there, he has a part to play in that story.
  45. No one mentioned how the bloodstain left by Jon Snow looks suspiciously like the shape of a

WHOLE CHICKEN. Cleganebowl 100% confirmed. GET HYPE.
  46. Ser Creighton Longbough,

And Braavos totally looks like Venice plus the Colossus of Rhodes!

Oh wow, I had already thought of Venice for Braavos, but completely forgot about that wonder of the world! Perfect! Vale to me is Wales, esp the northern section, perhaps even Anglesey.

  47. Deesensfan,

I agree. Brienne will break her oath due to Sansa and the Red Woman making an alliance to bring Jon back. We know Brienne saw what the Red woman did to Renly!

  48. Mihnea:
    Conquest,

I think people just associate the Vale with the mountains of Switzerland.

Those mountains protected Switzerland for centuries, maybe that’s a reason why some people associate the valleys of Switzerland with the Vale of Arryn.

But the Vale totally looks like the southwestern Ireland, totally looks like the province of Munster, in which we can find the Golden – wait for it – Vale! The Golden Vale. 🙂

  49. Maggie,
Aaah I see, thanks for that 🙂 Too many characters and plot lines to fit in my tiny mind all at once. Every time people get killed off new ones appear, there’s no respite. Unless of course the sand snakes go berserk and kill absolutely everyone! 😉

For those talking about geography, don’t forget Wales has dragons 😀

  50. Oh this conversation is making me want to travel back to Europe, to revisit old stomping grounds and see other places (Never been to Swizerland, have missed much of Ireland, never been to Spain (sounds ike a song). Constantiople. Croatia. sigh. Maybe soon

  51. Mihnea: I expect he will help Tommen get his wife back. That will anger Cersei no doubt.
He might also begin to do his duty to the family. We do see him in Lannister armor in the trailer.

It will no-doubt enrage and frighten her, particularly since she seems to be so much more aware of, and putting so much faith in prophecy now, anybody’s prophecy. She’d be frightened of the “more beautiful queen” that’s supposed to supplant her. You’re right, in her mind that’s always been Marge. She certainly wouldn’t want Marge freed. But now Jaime is in father-mode. He will want to help Tommen. He’s becoming more like Tywin every day, hence the Lannister armor.

Her almost calm acceptance of Myrcella’s death freaked me out. You could see her mind was becoming … untethered from reality, (a kudo to Lena’s acting!) but the calmness, the INTROSPECTION was eerie. Cersei, thinking about what she’d done in the past, calling herself a monster? No, no, no. We all expected her to go bat-shit crazy and bring the city down, as she threatened to do many times. What if her insanity takes the road of her starting to follow whatever the Westerosi equivalent of astrologers and prophets would be, instead? And Jaime can’t stand it and heads for the Riverlands under those conditions?

  52. Lulus Mum: something so truly random and unexpected that no-one could predict it. *fingers crossed for giant flying killer zombie penguin nazi sharks*

Hey Mum! *waves back* or a dragon flying overhead … soon. What was unexpected to me was Cersei being so calm. I thought she’d be beating on Jaime’s chest with an urn or something, cursing his carelessness. Instead, she says there was nothing he could do to stop the deaths. She wrote him a complete pass, based on her belief in what some freaky witch in a hut in a swamp had told her years before. Very Un-Cersei. Looks to me like she’s about to become the zombie, unless Jaime can snap her out of it.

  53. Deesensfan: – Loving all the Sansa love

Me too! Both Sophie and Alfie hit home runs with these scenes. Second by second, Reek was falling away, and Theon was inching back. I cheered and winced at the same time when he ran into the path of Bolton soldiers in order to lure them away from Sansa. Even the soldiers knew that Ramsay would carve him up. He knew, too, yet he moved to save Sansa anyway.

I was surprised by how much she’s already counting on his guidance, allowing him to persuade her into the icy water and looking for his approval before she accepted Brienne. I wonder if that foreshadows their relationship in the future.

I’m just so relieved that there will be a future for them. I was willing to accept any situation that got the two of them away from Ramsay. I’m normally more of a stickler for detail, but in their case I wouldn’t have cared if an eagle had appeared to carry them away or if they sprouted wings themselves, as long as it got them away from the Boltons. I actually stood up and cheered and fist-pumped and high-fived myself when Brienne charged out of the woods to save them. Anything, as long as they were safe, and Sansa could go on to become Queen in the North. Even with blue lips, she looked regal as she took on the role of a true Lady and accepted Brienne’s fealty. Only four more days til Sunday.

  54. Thronetender,

I did the same thing. I was actually standing the whole time during that scene, much like did with Hardhome battle (the same eh?) hahaha

And I agree. I am soooooooo GLAD they are away from Ramsay. I just couldn’t stand that anymore. Its time to move on and do big things.

  55. Thronetender,
Her being calm is worrying, it’s like when Ramsay does his going quiet bit, you don’t know if some explosion of craziness will be close behind 🙁

  56. When Jaime goes to the sept to deal with the Faith Militant, either Lancel or the High Sparrow is going to tell him about Lancel schtupping Cersei while Jaime was captured by the Starks. THAT is what is going to make him break with her. And (hopefully) that will send him straight to Brienne! Sorry, can’t help shipping!

  57. Seriously despise storify. It makes these posts a lot less fun to read. The slideshow option never seems to work properly on my android and when I read the full article it sometimes glitches and doesn’t show the whole page so I have to refresh and reclick through each page a million times. Really sucks. Please consider ditching storify.

  58. Hey, I am four days too late, but remember when we were all griping when the Dorne cast was announced and Tyene had double daggers instead of poison? Now we know why she needed them.
