New photos offer a glimpse of a new set and a large-scale weapon

Photos have recently been taken of a new set under construction in Northern Ireland with tantalizing weaponry. Very mild potential spoilers ahead.

Wiki of Thrones recently posted photos of a set still under construction next to the Painthall Studios in Belfast. The photos offer a glimpse at what appears to be a large castle. Sadly, there are no sigils or any other identifying marks visible.

However, there was a large trebuchet near the castle set, suggesting that this set may be intended for a battle sequence.

Wiki of Thrones also reported that filming has been taking place at Wolf Hill Quarry, where last season’s extraordinary frozen lake battle was filmed. According to sources, filming has been taking place at night but at this time we have no information about the nature of what’s being filmed.

  1. It’s definitely not the Red Temple, and now it doesn’t look like KL/RK anymore. The walls are being painted black (or dark grey) which is a typical color of the northern castles, as well as Harenhall, Dragonstone, maybe, Storms End. So, now things get really confusing: either either it should be Winterfell, or some new castle we haven’t seen before.

We need to wait for more pictures to rule out completely. The white and dark paint are layers they need to use for effects, depending where they are going, and possibly not the end result.

  3. Priscila,

Yes, you are right. This dark grey is just a primer and brighter ones should go on top. Nevertheless, it’s hard to imagine a redish end result with such a dark primer.

  4. I don’t see why they’d build a new and expensive set just for one Melisandre scene. If we see the temple in Volantis, it will probably be just a plain interior.

My guess is this is a Westerosi castle and the battle involves Team Ceuron vs Team Jonerys.

    Agree.

  6. mau,

It was a rather stupid guess based on the colour of the walls which was just a colour of plywood. Now we see that buildinf getting its true decoration and colour and it starts looking more northern than southern. Could it be the second set for Winterfell built excusively for the siege sequence?

I agree. I can’t see why they’d need such a massive set for a presumably short Volantis scene (although I hope we get such a scene). I think this is either a place we haven’t seen (Last Hearth, etc.) or a set that will burn, whether via dragon fire, wight dragon fire, or wildfire.

  8. I bet for Karhold. Remember the scene with Alys Karstark and Ned Umber swearing fealty to Jon…and Jon stating that Karhold and the Last Hearth would be in first line if the NK get south of the wall…It would not be surprising to have a first major battle at Karhold, and then the final battle at Winterfell…

  9. Artemisia:
    Ten Bears,

    what means burn infidels ?

In this (GoT/ASOIAF) context I think it means that Ten Bears is surmising that the Red Priestesses would burn people who did not believe in R’hollor.

Historically at some times in the past Christians have used the expression “infidel” (literally unfaithful) for someone who was not a Christian, someone who did not believe in the Christian God and I think was used at the time of the Crusades. Other religions may have used it about people who did not believe in their creed but I can’t be absolutely certain.

  10. Interesting that we all seemed to start agreeing this was Kings Landing but now common consensus seems to be shifting towards a northern castle, could it be Last Hearth possibly?

It could be a siege by the White Walkers in one of the early episodes.

  11. Artemisia:
    Ten Bears,

    Dame of Mercia is correct.
I was referring to Kinvara’s speech to Tyrion and Varys about “burning nonbelievers by the thousands”, not to mention Melisandre’s beach blanket bingo barbecue in S2.

Implicit is my criticism that some of the red priest(esses) are aware of the “great war” to come, but seem to be preoccupied with “purifying” the souls of their fellow humans, while Red Priest Thoros & His Merry Men actually went north to fight the WWs.

  12. Jon Snowed,
    Anon,

It can be anything: last season, showrunners introduced Eastwatch. However, they need to have main characters at the location to make the action sequence relevant. So, it may be just another Winterfell set. As far as I understand they are shooting Winterfell at a real historic estate and therefore shooting action seqence with fire etc. may damage the site (at least there might be a risk). Therefore, they might need another set.

  13. Agree Karhold or Last Hearth makes sense, yes it’s a big set but they still have seven months of filming to go and I can imagine in the first or second episode we are going to see the White Walkers cause terror in the North so it makes sense. It should be a big defeat for the humans.

  14. Artemisia: it could be interesting to see Volantis and im curious to see what the two Red Priestess will decide to do in the Great War.

Thats for sure , ever since season 2 have been hearing about the interest the religion of the Red God has in the Great War against Darkness , hope that gets explained in S8!

For sure! They’ve GOT to explain what’s going on with the Lord of Light. He or she is either a dirtbag who gets off on watching humans burn each other – or a benevolent god trying to help humanity survive the Big Bad enemy.

Though to paraphrase a great theologian: “If he’s so all powerful, why doesn’t he just tell you what the f*ck he wants?”

  16. There are some amazing new close up shots of the set coming out today… and the set is massive! Much bigger than we realise… not only is there a huge camera rig tower being installed, but they’re actually extending the set beyond that. Some of the stonework has started to be painted on and it looks pretty pale (although its entirely possible this could be serving as a number of locations)..
