Looking Forward, Game of Thrones Ep. 504: Where Are They Now and Disposable Probabilities

Brynden_Blackfish

Happy Weekend to all lovely Crows who’ve made the wise decision on joining us at the Wall.

A man goes by @OzofThrones and you have located the annual GoT edition of “Where Are They Now.” Lucky you.

The list has been slightly trimmed due to the reemergence of Kevan, Jaqen, and Lancel Sandwich, but plenty of names remain on the “Missing Persons” of Westeros PSA. And this surely isn’t all of them.

Here’s an Unsullied guesstimate at what they might be doing, and an unscientific scale of probability on whether or not they will even return…

Welcome to in-season Looking Forward, where Unsullied rule is invoked and Septons must remained fully clothed at all times. (Bearded Olyvar is available but brings a considerable upcharge).

You have found the annual Game of Thrones version of “Man, where you been hiding?” and although the list is dwindling, the North Remembers, and fanatics don’t forget.

Take note D&D… loose ends can make the faithful dark and full of terrors.

Without further ado, here goes (I’d encourage you to tell me who I forgot, but I know you will anyway). It is most definitely NOT an all-inclusive archive.

Keep in mind, this comes from the inquiring mind of an Unsullied and is based off the show alone. So take it for what it’s worth.

Gendry

imagesLast Seen: Episode 10 of Season 3, rowing.

Presumed to be: Rowing.

Disposable probability (a completely made-up unscientific measurement and purely speculative guesstimate on the percentage chance a character will never be seen again): 10%. As the last known living Baratheon bastard and a worthy case study for testing leech function on genitals, Gendry apparently holds some importance. And surely, the creators of this fine program will not leave us hanging with last seeing Gendry paddling his yacht into the great wide ocean.

The Brotherhood Without Banners

Last S012513-got-s3-01-1920-578x200een: Episode 7 of Season 3, heading off to chase Lannister soldiers (and losing Arya to the Hound).

Presumed to be: Chilling in a cave waiting to see who kills whom next and preserving their group structure while watching the rest of Westeros burn.

Disposable probability: 30%. Beric, Anguy and Thoros were a high point in Season 3 (at least for me) and it is difficult to fathom that their merry band of thieves may never be seen again. However, if the intent was to show them primarily as an important part of Arya’s story arc and reemphasizing the relevance of the Lord of Light, then I guess the mission was accomplished.

Still, it would seem relevant to bring them back into the fold considering how hell-bent Tywin was on catching them in Season 2 and especially if they were brought in to aid Stannis and Red Velvet given their shared connection to the one true God. Dormer did show up at the Season 5 premier in London, but of course, that doesn’t mean shit.

The Blackfish

BlackfishLast Seen: Episode 9 of Season 3, fortuitously heading out to pee on a tree.

Presumed to be: On the run or back at Riverrun. But considering the state the North is in and the fact that Walder Frey was awarded the joint, the latter seems very unlikely. (If he is still pissing on that tree, then he is undeniably the undisputed pissing champion of the World).

Disposable probability: 50%. Brynden may have been one of those special, once-in-a-series kind of guys who you loved and never really got enough of. I would say that the odds of seeing him again are less than half, but we should be encouraged to know that he is likely still alive as we haven’t been informed otherwise. Hopefully he reemerges.

Edmure

gameofthrones0303-0035_zps89dc4359Last Seen: Episode 9 of Season 3, heading for a bedding before the massacre at his wedding.

Presumed to be: Rotting in a Frey dungeon.

Disposable Probability: 80%. I get the inclination that we may never see poor ol’ Edmure again, and that is a damn shame. Out of all the characters on the show that are expert marksmen or swordsmen, Edmure was that clumsy cousin who so many of us can relate to.

Walder Frey

got-306-1396289386Last Seen: Episode 10 of Season 3, giggling like a schoolgirl with Roose Bolton following the demise of the Starks.

Presumed to be: Banging one of his great grandkids.

Disposable Probability: 35%. I upped the probs on Walder simply due to his age in the show (in his 90’s) and not because of his lack of importance. Walder still holds the Twins, which is essentially the Westerosi Toll Bridge, as well as Riverrun. But I wouldn’t be shocked if somewhere along the line a raven is received by someone stating that Walder croaked at the Twins while gaining carnal knowledge of some twins. But I hope not. Walder deserves a more appropriate death.

Balon Greyjoy

balon-greyjoy-1024

Last Seen: Episode 10 of Season 3, opening a box.

Presumed to be: Staring at Theon’s kraken wondering what the hell to do next.

Disposable probability: I have no freaking clue. Since the botched Theon rescue attempt and the abrupt disappearance of Yara, it seems the story of the people from Pyke has taken a backseat. Like, in the back of a Greyhound bus backseat.

Balon was never a beloved character, but he wasn’t supposed to be. And Westeros seems to be running thin on grungy, castle dwelling hermits these days. A reemerging Balon could fill the void.

Benjen Stark

2647361-benjen_stark_nights_watch_29805381_800_450Last Seen: Episode 3 of Season 1, riding off beyond the Wall. His horse would later return and the riders that traveled with him found deceased.

Presumed to be: a Wight, or some other form of vassal to the White Walkers, or still alive with some kind of extraordinary capability similar to Bran, but currently preoccupied.

Disposable probability: 20%. This percentage remains low due to the logic of why the show viewer would be introduced to him in the first place if he did not have a role to play later on. I personally don’t expect to see him until S6 or even S7, but I do expect to see him if for no other reason that his relevance remains a mystery. Season 1 seems like decades ago, but The North Remembers.

Rickon Stark

rikon-stark-1024Last Seen: Episode 9 of Season 3, exiting the tower of Hodor.

Presumed to be: Learning to fight like an Umber.

Disposable probability: 5%. And it really should be 0%. It’s shouldn’t be a matter of “if” Rickon comes back, but “when.” The immediate concern is whether or not the Umbers can keep him safe from all of the turmoil in the North while he matures and learns to swing a sword and attempts to grow a prepubescent beard.

Osha

oshaLast Seen: Episode 9 of Season 3, accompanying Rickon to the Last Hearth.

Presumed to be: Watching Rickon learn to fight like an Umber and trimming Umber facial hair on the side.

Disposable probability: 25%. Seeing Osha again should questionably match the probabilities of seeing Rickon. But you have to wonder if Osha will want to go join the free folk whenever she hears about the events at the Wall. And that would be an easy way to explain her disappearance should she disappear.

Bran and the Treehuggers

Hodor-and-Bran-GOTLast Seen: Episode 10 of Season 4

Presumed to be: Learning to Fly (Pink Floyd 1987, or Tom Petty 1991, or Foo Fighters 1999).

Disposable probability: 0%. Although it is common knowledge that Bran and the Traveling Hodors will not be appearing in S5, we know for a fact that the band will return at some point in the future. You can’t just end their prolonged tumultuous journey under a Weirwood with a tree-rooted man.

Cheese Boy

tumblr_inline_ml480wIEal1qz4rgpLast Seen (and only seen in): Episode 2 of Season 3

Presumed to be: Remanded back to the Cheese Serving Protocol Institute after telling Olenna of the proper timing regarding the serving of cheese.

Disposable probability: 95%. For only showing up in one scene in one episode yet remaining so memorable, Will Rastall made a hell of a splash. But considering the fact that he has yet to reemerge, the Legend of Cheese Boy seems likely to remain just that.

Olenna Tyrell

vlcsnap-2013-04-08-10h34m17s219Last Seen: Episode 4 of Season 4.

Presumed to be: Taking a break from the bullshit.

Disposable probability: 5%. The Queen of Thorns should most definitely return considering her granddaughter just got married to the King and the supposed arrangement with “her new friend.” Plus, someone has to say “Not now Mace.”

The odd part (and subsequent shred of doubt) is that she did not make it back for the Tommen/Marg wedding. But elder ladies indeed need their rest. And not having to poison anyone probably would have seemed boring.

The Iron Throne

Iron_throneLast Seen: Episode 6 of Season 4 (I think), with none other than Tywin Lannister perched on it.

Presumed to be: Sitting still. Or riding in the back of an Uber vehicle.

Disposable probability: 0%. When everyone is fighting for you, your job security is solid.

Episode 504

GOT504_080714_HS_DSC_2781
“Oh, you want some of dis?”

At long last, it looks as if we will finally meet the oft mentioned Sand Snakes (who are sure to be excessively referred to as the “Charlie’s Angels” of Dorne).

Without seeing them in action yet, I am already fond of Rosabell (something about a short haircut on a woman declares confidence and is subsequently quite attractive).

The Sons of the Harpy seem to be ready for their uprising, and no Dany in the last episode may mean an overdose of Dany in this one.

It is still unclear exactly who Tommen is being confronted by, although it appears to potentially be some kind of religious faction. Maybe a connection with the High Sparrow?

Will Jorah and his Tyrion backpack make it out of the brothel without getting bitten by a Spider?

And finally, in yet another reoccurring instance of “things can’t get any worse for Sansa”, nothing good is about to occur.  I’m on the edge of my seat. Ozzette is on the edge of the toilet.

That’s it for me today, you gorgeous Crows. Thank you for visiting this week’s installment of “Unsullied Know Nothing.” Disagree with the probabilities? You probably should.

See you all Monday morning for the 504 recap.

Until next week, tell a GoT friend about WotW, stay thirsty, and may there always be peace in your realm. –Oz

  1. Didn’t I see the queen of thorns in one of the trailers? She’ll definitely be back!

  2. i recently read an interview with joe dempsie (gendry) in which he talks about coming back to got and he says something like “i can’t tell you, the producers would kill me”. he wouldn’t say that if there wasn’t ANYTHING…right? in other words, i think and HOPE we’re going to see him soon!

  3. Nymeria (the direwolf).
Last seen: Season 1 Episode 2 scampering away at a wooded area near the Inn at the Crossroad
Presumed: Terrorizing the Riverlands (if alive). Although a wolf as big as a Shetland pony would have caused some rumoured sightings and talks already among the smallfolks.
Disposable Probability : Dunno. I am not good at Math

  4. And what about… Crow’s eye? Was that last scene of season 3 just a tribute saying that will be it? Or is he coming back in season 6?

  5. Others:

    1. Mord, the Gaelor! Where is he? Disposability %: 99%. They left the Eyrie. So he’s probably not going to show up again. Presumably he’s hitting someone with a whip somewhere. Maybe Gendry. NO GOLD!

    2. Quaithe of Asshai: I’d love to see her again. The chances are very low. She’s so mysterious, though. And honestly? Kind of turned on by the mask. Disposability: 77%.

    3. Salladhor Saan: “Bring me my red shirt!” How can we not get him again? Answer: We will get him again. Disposability: 20%.

    4. Hot Pie! Hot Pie! We can’t keep going to the Inn at the Crossroads. It’s something like 60 percent. Still, I’m not giving up on the gravy. Because you can’t give up on the gravy!

    5. Another named member of the Kingsguard other than Jaime and Meryn Trant actually getting an identity, a face, and a name. Disposability: 100%. Because really, fuck the kingsguard. Fuck their bullshit honor and their brutality. Fuck the mystique surrounding their supposed nobility. And fuck the notion that this is some unexplored avenue of the show. Not having to hear the tales of their bravery was a great chop by the show.

  6. Oz makes a good point.

Why introduce all these (some were more exposed some less … for instance you kinda remember a guy with a flamig sword) characters and then make them suddenly dissapear?

I know people who havent read the books and are show watchers.
They do not remember Blackfish or Edmure. They didn´t remember Lancel.

But what is the worst they have no fu**ing clue that there is a Stark by the name of Rickon who is Ned´s youngest son.

But we absolutely had to have Sandsnakes in! :-/
Lord forbid they left out that filler out of the show.

  7. Go cheese boy! 🙂

Quaithe is very high on my list though. Or just another person wearing that strange mask…

  8. Without seeing them in action yet, I am already fond of Rosabell (something about a short haircut on a woman declares confidence and is subsequently quite attractive).

I like Rosabell’s haircut so much, I’m actually thinking about getting it myself.

    Crackpot theories on

Edit: I’m removing it. Too spoilery speculation. Sorry.

Rickon and Osha will definitely return.

I think Gendry, Balon, the Blackfish, Walder Frey and Nymeria the direwolf will turn up again as well.

  9. Unidentified Warlock-girl:
    – Last seen: Season 3 episode 1 in Astapor
    – Presumed to be: Growling in the shadows at Dany.
    – Disposable probability: The girl: 95%. The Warlocks in general: 20%

Why show the Warlocks outside of Qarth of it isn’t going to lead to anything? Along with the slavers, Dany has severily pissed them off. I don’t necessarily see the girl reappearing, but it would be awesome if the Warlocks are somehow included in the Sons of the Harpy-plot in the show. It’s an alliance that I can definitely see happening in the show.

  10. Syrio Forel!

The greast swordsman who ever lived last seen with a stick facing Meryn Fucking Trant.

    I want to believe…

  11. I doubt we will ever again see the Brotherhood as they existed in s3… the logistics of bringing back so many actors that have presumably gone on to other things just makes it feel really improbable.

I think it’s more likely that one of the fellas will pop up–either alone or with a different troop of “brothers” that we hadn’t seen on screen before–to explain away the last couple years and/or get themselves totally killed to give us some closure going into the endgame. I hope it’s Thoros, because of how he’s awesome. And the apparently-increasing importance of the fire religion would make him a good choice to come back and tie things together.

Ok… if I’m being honest with myself I don’t know if that is really “more likely” or just something I really want to see on account of how the Brotherhood is cool as shit. Without complaining about things that could have been cut for the sake of more BwoB, I will just say that there is SO MUCH MORE that could have been done with a gritty band of outlaw commies…

  12. Of all the characters listed in Oz’s article and the comments, I think the ones I’m most hoping to see again, but am least sure about would be Benjen, the Blackfish, Quaithe, and Nymeria the Direwolf.

Two characters I would also love to see again and am pretty sure we will (not based on anything from the books, just a feeling we almost have to see them again) are Gendry and Rickon. I wouldn’t be surprised to see Gendry show up this season, in fact. I mentioned this on another thread, but my reasoning for this isn’t based on anything other than even though plenty of people knew Jaquen would be baquen this season, not a single picture was seen of him. Somehow, even though it seems like he had to have shot in both Croatia and Northern Ireland, and again, people knew he’d be back no sort of photographic evidence surfaced. Thus, I think Joe Dempsie could have absolutely been on set, but the powers-that-be were able to keep him under wraps. It may well be just wishful thinking, but, hey, a girl can wish. 🙂

  13. I think it’s interesting that people think Gendry is such a big loose end. He rowed to King’s Landing, where things will be relatively safe and uneventful. That was a pretty conclusive ending for him, I feel.

I never really thought his Baratheon lineage made him super important – unless he gets leached again, which I doubt – he was a supporting character in Arya’s storyline. Would like to see him sometime again, in a scene with Arya maybe, but I don’t see him as someone with a huge question mark over him that needs to be answered.

  14. Just a reminder- no book spec and no filming spoiler discussion- this is completely Unsullied discussion.

  15. Great article!

I’m hoping to see Rickon, the Blackfish and Benjen return to the show. Love the BWB but have come to the sad conclusion that they will never be seen again.

  16. I liked the Tullys a lot too. If you want to see more of Edmure’s Tobiaz Menzies I suggest you watch Outlander. He does a great job bringing his character(s) to life.

As to who reappears I hope the BwoB returns sometime.

  17. As an exercise in trying to find the most efficient method to get most of these folks back on screen, I’d have the Blackfish meetup with the Brotherhood to kill the Freys and rescue Edmure

  18. I understand the interest in Gendry because his story was left open ended. But I feel like his story was essentially over and that there’s something comforting in knowing a likable character met with a desirable and deserving end. I don’t know if there’s more to his story in the books, but the likelihood of his return seems really low to me.

  19. slimchicken:

    desirable and deserving end ?????????????????????

Im looking at the map now. He has to row atleast 300 miles and that if he manages to row straight the entire time (impossible) and encounters no storms or butt-pirates!

Fu*k that “desirable and deserving end” i would rather be killed with sex by Mellisandre.

  20. Sue the Fury,

I hope you weren’t referring to my post, but since I mentioned filming in it, I can’t help but wonder, especially after last week. I thought I was incredibly careful, but if something I said could somehow be construed any kind of spoiler, just delete it.

  21. BWB: Presumed to be…Chilling in a cave waiting to see who kills whom next and preserving their group structure while watching the rest of Westeros burn.

Great reminder post, Oz…but I doubt the BWB are passively cowering in some cave waiting for things to get better. They are a bit more influential and disruptive than that, imho!

  22. rewatched the episodes that are out so far……wow
little finger &sansas magical teleporting carriage.

  23. Olenna was at the wedding. If you freeze frame the shot after the vows she’s there but it’s not Diana Rigg, it’s someone else in a blue scarf. Margaery also mentions that she has to leave straight away when manipulating Tommen about Cersai needing to get out of the city.

  24. Whenever Rickon returns, I hope we see some Umbers with him. Preferably the Greatjon.

  25. That scaley Tully armor is on point.

Where can I buy that material? I’m gonna cover the entire exterior of my house in it.

  26. Tenesmus,

Just gotta find one mainish character to team up with them at that point, not really sure who that would be…Sansa might be interested in seeing that happen if she came to power in Winterfell, but I doubt she’d go out to the front lines. Maybe Blackfish could show up at Winterfell and suggest the rescue to her.

Anyone else, you’d need too many contortions of motivation to justify their involvement.

  27. Yung Wolf,

They look like small leather or metal scales. I agree though, I like it a lot. I also have this strange obsession with the house Stark armor. It would be nice if someone would make some reproductions of it, I’d definitely buy.

  28. I hope Edmure and the Blackfish Tully return. The Freys can receive a horrible end and Edmure as lord of Riverrun can form an alliance with his niece Sansa and nephew Robin Arryn in The Vale and The North. I like to believe that, anyway.

  29. I’m hoping to see more of the Riverlands: The Twins, Riverrun. That would of course be featuring Walder Frey, Edmure Tully, Brynden ‘Blackfish’ Tully and Roslyn (or Roslin?) Tully (previously Frey).

Another wish would be to see Nymeria. Thinking about it, maybe Nymeria’s with Blackfish…

  30. Here are my thoughts on the list:
-Walder Frey- 0%, he’s definitely going to get his due… Eventually. Season 6 or 7 is my guess.
-Edmure- 10%, I think he (and his Frey wife Roslyn) will reappear alongside Walder
-Blackfish- 30%, they bothered to keep him alive when he could have just died in the Red Wedding, which implies that they had something planned for him. But the show has since diverged a lot from the books, and it’s possible D&D changed their minds about him. Unlike Edmure, he isn’t tied to the Frey storyline (which absolutely needs payoff) so he can still disappear. The way Illyrio was handled this season is a good example.
-The Brotherhood- 60%, and I would say 80 if they wouldn’t keep mentioning them (both in Arya’s list in season 4 and in season 5 banter). With them involved, there might be enough material for a whole arc at the Riverlands (Freys and Tullys included). Now, if we can get Arya there…
-Rickon- 0%, no way he won’t come back
-Osha- 0%, these two come together. It helps that Natalia is enthusiastic about returning to the show, and that everyone loves her.
-Benjen- 50%, in my opinion. I could see this mystery never solved.
-Bran, Hodor, Meera and the Three Eyed Crow- 0%, I’ll be waiting for their reappearance. Season 6 should be hella interesting.

    The one you missed:
Nymeria- 70%, given that she hasn’t been mentioned in the show since, and there’s a disappointing lack of setup. It’s almost as if Arya never had a wolf.

  31. steff,

I don’t know, I think season 3 had a perfect ending to Gendry. It just won’t get any better for him in this show. He’s better off not reappearing and getting thrown into the game of thrones.

  32. Balon will show up when Yara shows up again, I think. I doubt they’ll just disappear for the entirety of the show.

  33. Edmure will show up when the Frey’s appear next season, as for the BF, I figure he will either hear of Sansa and head North or be involved in the Frey plotline.
If anyone noticed the words in Lyanna Mormont’s response, “…his name is Stark,” who is the “he” she references? Robb is log dead, Jon is a Snow, therefore I deduce that she knows about Rickon via the Umber’s and the he in her letter is referencing him.
As for Gendry, it’s probably one of the following…

    1. He’s still rowing
    2. He’s in Braavos
    3. He;s in Hardhome
    4. He’s in Mereen
    5. He’s in Stannis’s army

He won’t go back to KL or the Riverlands, bad experiences and people in Flea will recognize him and word could get out.

  34. Bran and the Treehuggers is the second best name for a band, right after Lancel and the Sparrows.
Btw, I love these articles and I want to believe we’re going to see again the most of them… particularly Rickon and the Blackfish!

  35. Talking of loose ends, WE STILL HAVEN’T FOUND OUT WHO ORDERED BRAN’S ASSASSINATION IS SEASON 1 EPISODE 2

also I really hoped Benjen would be back this season 🙁 , he’ll be pissed Jon just gave his job to Ser Alliser

  36. Seems Yara should have been on this list.
Looks as Gemma Whelan will be in at least the last three episodes of season 5.

Odd to see Richard Dormer at the London Red Carpet this year don’t know if that means anything.

  37. Mormont,
Yes, the show explained that. In a conversation between Tyrion and Cersei, Tyrion figures out that it was Joffrey and that Cersei knew it was Joffrey.

  38. I hope after Melisandre gave Gendry blue balls, he decided to become a devoted red priest to get a chance to grab her red velvet. Maybe he was that asian chick we saw last episode.

  39. Dame Pasty,

I remember that conversation happening regarding Joffrey killing Robert’s bastards and Joffrey ordering the Kingsguard to kill Tyrion, but I don’t remember anything about Bran…. Episode?

  40. I find it hard to believe we won’t see the Blackfish again. There has to be a reason he went for that pee. (Besides, erm, needing a pee).

Ok, it’s possible they change direction in the show (although, he’s definitely a character to whom you can attribute the “badass” label, so him coming back would surely be an audience pleaser). I think it’s pretty much a certainty we’ll see more of him in the books, though.

    Regarding another character…
*Speculation based on AFFC/ADWD spoilers below*

Balon: I’m forcing myself to be very optimistic here, and hoping that the reason they’re delaying his turn – and his death a la Stannis’s leech – is because they want to sync it up with the plot with the Greyjoy uncles. Not the whole thing, but a condensed version of it where it turns out Daario is Euron or something.
  41. Mormont,
I can’t remember the episode but I could point you to many, many GoT Wikis and book discussion sites where it is made clear. However, if you’re unsullied, it wouldn’t be a good idea to go to any of them. Give me some time, I’ll find the episode and possibly a video of their conversation.

  42. “Will Jorah and his Tyrion backpack make it out of the brothel without getting bitten by a Spider?”

This has to be one of the funniest lines ever! LOL!!

  43. Dame Pasty:

Who sent the assassin is never revealed in the TV show

    From Game of Thrones Wiki

It is unknown why the TV series never reveals that it was

    Joffrey

    who sent the assassin;

  44. Boojam,

Will she? Where has that been reported? Be happy if she is as would give a window into what’s going on (if anything) with the Iron Islands situation.

  45. Conan,

Always wondered why that was never revealed in the show. Should have come out just before the Purple Wedding to add even more come-uppanceness to it!

  46. People, STOP speculating about missing people when you say upfront they’re still missing in the books!

Oz, I too love Edmure’s clumsiness. Everybody else is a legend and he’s simply a man (though not A Man).

  47. TheTouchOfFrost: Will she? Where has that been reported? Be happy if she is as would give a window into what’s going on (if anything) with the Iron Islands situation.

IMDB lists Gemma in episodes 8,9,10, while , with IMDB, that not always reliable ,I am thinking it is. Gemma also gave the usual evasion when asked no the definitive ‘no casting call’ given by others like Natalia Tena who I was hoping would make a brief cameo this season.
The almost succeeded in hiding Tom Wlaschiha for this season and I am not sure why.

  48. I don’t see why Gendry would return in the show at all. His story ended with him being told to basically disappear.

    Benjen is probably a wight…

    Rickon will theoretically reappear????

The Tully story just was left hanging at the Red Wedding. If that isn’t wrapped up eventually it’s just kinda bad story telling. Not necessarily this year, but at some point.

  49. The reasons for missing characters are varied… I think of them as falling in one of the following categories:
    1) Return definitely expected but the time has not yet come, just wait and see.
    2) Return was deemed probable at the time of filming their last bit…. but since then plans have changed, their roles have been cut or consolidated into another character, they won’t appear and it is deemed a waste of screen time to explain their disappearance.
    3) Characters are deemed unimportant by show-runners, and they’re scratching their heads wondering why the fandom is obsessed with them!
    4) Characters have unknown future importance in the unpublished books, so at the end of their scenes on the show they were “saved” rather than killed off, just in case.
    5) Characters were played by an actor who is unavailable when called back for a much later season… so their role is quietly scrapped or consolidated into another existing character.

As a bookreader, I can think of instances of every category having apparently happened in GOT.

  50. Eleanor: People, STOP speculating

It’s weird to scrutinize & speculate when the answers are out there. All you need do is reach out and take it. I understand wanting to be an Unsullied viewer, but then why bother trying to figure it out & risking finding out. That must be frustrating.

  51. Dame Pasty,

It’s never explained on the show and it probably won’t be now. It was too long ago for most casual show-watchers to care, so they won’t bother. I don’t know why they didn’t work it into the purple wedding episode, it would have been a more effective use of some of Tyrion’s lines.

  52. Rygritte

So every fan of House of Cards US having a cosy chat about “wow, I wonder where things are going with Paul Russo?” was simply too lazy to find out what happened to his equivalent on House of Cards UK?

Why can’t show-only fans have these chats?

  53. I want Cheese Boy to return. So many questions.

But really the ones I am looking forward to see return are

Benjen: Like Oz says, why introduce him in the first place.

Gendry: Has to come back. To me at least they seemed to be setting him up for something more important than leeches sucking his blood.

Bran and the Treehuggers: Don’t really need to speculate here. They will be back next season. Really excited about that.

Rickon and Osha: Want to see them return. “Bear Island knows no King but the King In The North whose name is Stark”. Could’ve been about Rickon. Maybe, don’t know.

The Tullies: Want them to take revenge on Walder Frey.

Next episode: Really want to know what Dany is going to do about The Sons of the Harpy. To me this is looking like its going be her best season since season 1. So much more conflict there.

And Sansa. Oohh I am really scared for Sansa. Thoughts about what might happen is making me sick to my stomach. Being betrothed to Ramsey?? Can’t wait to find out what is going happen there, but I’m also really afraid to find out. I don’t trust LK with Sansa either.

Though I do like the fact there is a Stark back at Winterfell.

    The North Remembers.

  54. Book wise why have Rickon and Osha been off-page for so long? I mean aside from being mentioned in Davos’s quest?

Just what is George going to do with the Tullys ? Their appearance in the last two novels left one wondering will they be seen again?

Gendry where is GRRM taking that story?

Lots of characters off-page right now , how does GRRM propose to cover then with just two novels left?

  55. The show is all about killing off characters or nudging them out of the story, to make room for characters in other story lines. I don’t have much hope for any of the characters you mention to return, save a few that are important to the overall story arc.

Bran & Co are probably the only ones we are going to see returning. That’s my bet anyway. It’s not that I wouldn’t want to see some characters return though…

  56. Eleanor,

Why can’t you just avoid a thread where there is obviously going to be speculation?

By all means have those chats with people who only follow the show but beware people will use all evidence they can to speculate and disregarding the books is an elephant in the room situation.

  57. A Tully has to re-appear at some point I believe as part of the culmination of the Riverlands plot. Maybe Blackfish with the brotherhood looking for his niece?

Benjen, I’d make that higher. His function was to get Jon to the wall and to go beyond it. Last episode Jon make Thorne First Ranger which is Benjen’s job so Jon thinks Benjen is dead or not coming back.

  58. Of course it’s all wait and see but here are my thoughts using my logic (based on show only and no spoilery):

    1. Gendry: Who is he? Part Baratheon, Robert’s bastard son. Are any of the Baratheons besides Stannis relevant anymore? Stannis didn’t want him, in fact, was going to have him killed, so Davos saved him. Is this foreshadowing that Gendry’ll do something important in the future? Otherwise, why not just let him have been killed?

    2. Brotherhood Without Banners: Relevance? It would seem that Thoros of Myr, who is also a red priest (like Melisandre) is the most significant member. He has seemingly taught Mel something about bringing people back from the dead, at least it would appear so since she was so interested in learning about it when they met, and they did go off to have a conversation about it. Will this be relevant in the future? I don’t know, since the White Walkers can presumably also bring people back from the dead as Wights. It would seem that anyone who has been burned cannot be brought back, but what about those who have not been burned? This raises some interesting possibilities…I have a feeling that the Brotherhood will not be returning, though.

    3. The Blackfish and Edmure Tully: I loved the Tullys so I want them to come back, perhaps as people of the North who might finally, finally group together against the Lannisters/Cleganes/Bad people of the South and join up with what remains of the Starks/Good people of the North. However, their tie-in would seem to be with the Freys.

    4. The Freys: The Freys and the Boltons are allies now, no? What has happened to Old Walder? I’m sure the show will tell us if he died or not. Without his leadership, can the rest of the Freys unite? Are they now Lannister allies as are the Boltons? I think so, but none of this has been made clear. At the last Small Council meeting I noticed how tiny the Small Council was now, and Cersei still does not have a Hand of the King. Couldn’t she give this honor (?) to one of the Freys or the Boltons? That would be really interesting…OMG what if she gives it to Ramsay???? (Pure speculation on my behalf.)

    5. Balon Greyjoy: Another old guy. But I would think his significance in going forward would be to fulfill Stannis’ prophesy about the 3 usurpers. Remember when Mel threw the leeches full of Gendry’s blood into the fire and Stannis named the 3? “Joffrey Baratheon, usurper”. “Robb Stark, usurper.” “Balon Greyjoy, usurper.” So I suppose Balon will die, probably of old age.

    6. Benjen Stark: It’s been so long since we’ve seen him, yet he would seem to have been important as the Head Ranger. I find it interesting that Lord Commander Jon Snow has just made Alliser Thorne the new Head Ranger in the last episode. Could Alliser be the one who finds Benjen? And what could this mean to the Night’s Watch? Perhaps Benjen has found out some stuff about the White Walkers, who are still such a freaking mystery but a great and fascinating one.

    7. Rickon and Osha: Yes, where are they???? What I am afraid of is that because of the precedent already having been set, that all the Starks will die, leaving only Rickon who is so well hidden by Osha (who also seems to know a lot about the mysteries of the North) and will emerge at the end as the true leader of the North and the only remaining Stark. It’s a wild theory and so, so sad in its implications, but wouldn’t this seem to be the direction in which the Starks have been heading?

    8. Bran and the Treehuggers: Yes, what is going on with Bran & Co.? I have no idea on this one. Presumably he is learning stuff from the Children of the Forest, kind of like what Rickon is doing, only in a different way. Maybe he and Rickon will get together again and be the two remaining Starks. This would be better than there only being one Stark alive at the end.

    9. Cheese Boy and Olenna: I know! Olenna has taken him back to Highgarden and is having her wicked way with him as I’m writing this! No, I’m kidding. I thought Margaery said Olenna was sick of Kings Landing and went home, but I can’t believe that a woman who seemed so protective of her granddaughter and so wary of the Lannisters would leave her in the clutches of Cersei, alone and unprotected. I think she will return in a big way. Okay, Mace is there with Marg. I almost forgot about him. And the Tyrell army is with him too, isn’t it?

    10. The Iron Throne: Both Littlefinger and Varys made such a big deal in past seasons about wanting it so badly, although I don’t think Varys actually meant to sit on it and rule from it, but rather that he’d like to be the chief advisor to the eventual ruler. This could happen, and it would seem that the person Varys is advising right now is Tyrion. Hmmm…

Littlefinger, on the other hand, would seem to actually want to occupy the throne himself. I thought he might do this by marrying Sansa. One by one he seems to be picking up a lot of land, titles and riches, and marrying Sansa would give him more. Hmmm….I thought that his idea of Sansa marrying Ramsay was kind of weird, but it could be part of a bigger scheme. It’s all so interesting. I can see it coming down to a big fight between Littlefinger and Varys in the end.

One of the other missing ‘characters’ some other fans mentioned was Nymeria, Arya’s direwolf. Yes! Where is Nymeria and will she play some significant role in the end? And what significance do the direwolves have? Didn’t Ned say in the first season that they were there to protect the Starks? So far they haven’t done a very good job and they seem to be easy to kill when one has to do it. (Lady, Grey Wind.) I have no idea what the rest of the direwolves will do in future, although Ghost has helped Jon somewhat. Perhaps they are nothing more than large pets and Nymeria has just run off and got herself lost like Arya told her to.

  59. Tobias was a great Edmure. Loved every scene with him. Would have loved to see him up against Hinds in GoT. Their interaction in Rome was one of the highlights of S1 for me

  60. Olenna was in the trailers in a scene with – presumably, we didn’t see her – Cersei.

  61. Lavignac,

Very good speculation. Sort of fits in the ‘life happens when you make other plans’ category. Definitely think this one probably happened more oft than not:

    2) Return was deemed probable at the time of filming their last bit…. but since then plans have changed, their roles have been cut or consolidated into another character, they won’t appear and it is deemed a waste of screen time to explain their disappearance.

The ones that I really want to know about is Rickon, Fish and Gendry, because there appearance would definitely change The Game.

  62. Needle

Will we ever see it again? Will it be swiped by some opportunistic Braavosi thief? Or has it served its purpose and Arya/No-one forsakes it? Or will it re-appear only to be found in the spring thaw still locked tight between her frozen fingers?

For all my disappointment with parts of AFFC/ADWD, I just re-read that Arya chapter and the section where she disposes of her stuff sans Needle is a beautifully written piece of prose and Maisie just put all that across without dialogue so damned well.

  63. TheTouchOfFrost,

Uhh,i’m pretty sure this is a show only thread and therefore there shouldn’t be book readers here considering you have other threads to speculate, you are the dumbass here not her .

  64. ace,

I think there are rumors of a large (and growing) wolfpack, led by a huge female wolf, running in the Riverlands. If it’s Nymeria’s pack I’ll put money on her sniffing out Walder Frey at RiverRun. That is her family’s castle after all……and wolves are VERY territorial!

  65. Loved this article, thanks Oz! 🙂

My two cents: I think some of these characters are long gone, and while it might be annoying for us to have loose threads and beloved characters MIA (I’m looking at you, Gendry), it might be just too much work to bring them back.
However, for individuals with important family names, especially given they’re the only remaining members, such as the Blackfish and Edmure Tully, Rickon Stark, I’m raising my hopes. Bran and company are a given.
BwB I don’t really care personally so I’m fine with that, they served their purpose as Oz said.
For Balon, I’m guessing when Yara/Asha reappears she may bring news, or a raven will bring an Iron Islands update to Theon at WF.
As for Walder, I really hope SOMEONE murders the shit out of that guy as revenge, death of old age is too good for the Late Lord Frey…
    Personal favs?
The more direwolves the better, bring back Nymeria!
Blackfish and Greatjon Umber please, like those feisty old dudes!
    The North Remembers!

    Sidenote-
I am sullied but I liked your point about House of Cards- I watched the UK version and I know the twist ending but I don’t spoil for my friends currently watching the US version. THIS post is an Unsullied post with instructions at the top to be extremely careful. It was written by Oz who we all know is unsullied. Those of us who have read the books have the other 80% of the site to go wild on, let’s use spoilers when we’re supposed to otherwise the unsullied viewers will go elsewhere 🙂

EDIT: I used my wrong email/avatar. oops. Imagine Jaime Lannister’s lovely face instead please.

  66. Hoyti Von Totiy,

Agree fully regarding the Sandsnakes……..BORING at best and a useless thread. It goes nowhere. Thank God the Seastone Chair battle was left out. No reason to see Asha or Balon again either. Jaime and Bronn in Dorne is a huge eye roll at this point. :-\

  67. Mormont,

Jeffrey ordered Bran killed to gain points with his dad, King Robert. Jeoff had previously taken the knife from the array of hunting weapons Robert had. Jeoffrey overheard Robert say that “they’d put an animal out of its misery instead of letting it suffer” and that it would be a kindness for someone to end the boy’s suffering.
(Hope I have stayed within the boundaries of this site)

  68. My guess for BWB is that they’ll show up at the Wall to fight the big fight later on. They always said they were looking for a cause worth fighting for…

  69. Thoros of Myr – 90%. Because Tyrion mentioned him in last week’s episode in the scene with the Asian priestess. There is no wasted dialogue in this show, and this was meant to remind the audience of his existence.

Balon Greyjoy – I don’t know the percentage, but it would be a flaw in the show if they don’t revisit this character and fulfill the curse with the leeches. No indication on IMDB that Patrick Malahide is back this season.

Syrio = Jaqen. Would love to see Miltos appear as one of the faces in the house of B&W. Again, no indication on IMDB. But just discovered Miltos IS in the new Star Wars movie.

  70. tyrion101356,

Grow up. I didn’t call her any names at all: Just suggested that if she’s that worried about spoilers then it’d be wise to steer clear of threads that are speculating. If people are trying to work out what’s going to happen then it’s only natural that they are going to refer to the books for indications.
I assume you’re one of these ridiculous types who has put people into either a book or show box? Sorry fella, people who’ve read the books may actually enjoy the show too and the other way round. Apologies if that has broken your black and white thinking.

  71. TheTouchOfFrost,

Actually, this is an Unsullied thread. Book-reader speculation is not appropriate for this comment thread. They are right to be concerned. Our book knowledge obviously affects our spec. We might not technically know a plot point from the show, but the fact that we’ve read the books informs our guesses in a big way as to whether or not a character will return or has importance.

As this is an Unsullied post, people should not have steer clear of it out of fear of spoilers.

  72. And some of these posts are getting edited/deleted.

The phrase “in the books” should not be appearing anywhere in an Unsullied comment thread.

  73. tyrion101356,

Maybe he is off to see Pycelle, he sorted Tyrion ‘i haven’t had a proper shit in a week’ Lannister out after all.

  74. BGAP,

Right. There is usually NO wasted dialogue although at the time of first showing this may not always be apparent. However, it always becomes apparent upon re-viewing after the season has ended, so this is something to keep in mind.

I had forgotten about Syrio! Because he wasn’t shown to have been killed he probably wasn’t!

  75. BGAP,

You could say the same thing about the Golden Company mentions in season 4. They are nowhere to be found in season 5, and I doubt we’ll ever see them in the show.

Thoros getting mentioned might just be that, and not some attempt to keep him in people’s heads (it could go either way, honestly). The fact that he got whiped from Arya’s list (alongside Berric and Melisandre) is much more telling IMO.

  76. Sue the Fury,

I like to read Oz’s posts (though I’ve caught up with the books now) as I appreciate his humour. It is of course possible to read without posting and I don’t want to risk forcing you to live up to your name. There are some characters that I wonder where they are despite having read certain hefty tomes – though I won’t mention names.

  77. Personally I’m hoping to see the Tully’s again

Both Edmure and Blackfish were really well cast

Plus I’d love to see Quaithe and Gendry

Perhaps most of all though is Rickon and Osha of course

  78. We want Btothethood clan and remaining Tullys back!

D&D , get your shit together!

Stop dedicating time to explore inner thoughts and feelings of Unsullied soldiers related to lack of having a penis and go back to Riverlands! Where Red Wedding took place!

    Consistency please!!!

  79. Sue the Fury,

As far as I’m aware most people have been covering up spoilers. Fair enough, they have the right to raise concerns but name-calling? Really?
My opinion stands. If you don’t want to risk spoilers then steer clear of threads that go into speculation. People should cover their spoilers but the world isn’t perfect so it’s tempting fate IMO.

  80. TheTouchOfFrost,

This is a speculation thread for Unsullied. There is absolutely no reason for Sullied to speculate here, because they can do so in numerous other threads. It would be a shame if Unsullied were prevented from speculating because of selfish book readers who are either too stupid to post only on the appropriate threads, or are unpleasant enough to ruin other individual’s enjoyment.

This site isn’t for book readers only, or television viewers only. It is for all fans to enjoy. Mistakes happen, but quite often the Sullied posting on these threads should know a lot better.

The time when we are all Unsullied will be a welcome relief from people who just can’t help themselves. No one is superior just because they have read a book. And that is the vibe a large minority of book readers give off.

  81. Jeb,

    You’re full of contradictions!

“This is a speculation thread for Unsullied. There is absolutely no reason for Sullied to speculate here, because they can do so in numerous other threads” and yet “This site isn’t for book readers only, or television viewers only. It is for all fans to enjoy.”.

    Also, “large minority”?!

I repeat, I haven’t seen any spoilers that haven’t been covered in this thread and my personal opinion is speculation is a slippery slope if you don’t want spoilers. Also, if you think book and show watchers can both enjoy the site then don’t start spouting nonsense about book readers thinking they’re superior. It’s that kind of crap that leads to this pathetic book vs show crap that keeps rearing it’s head. People who’ve read the book act like they’ve read the book. Nothing more, nothing less. Anything else is going on in your own mind.

  82. TheTouchOfFrost: As far as I’m aware most people have been covering up spoilers.

People are not supposed to even be posting covered-up spoilers in in Unsullied threads like this. I can understand some confusion for new visitors to the site, but you aren’t new. Next time and every time we’ll spell it out very clearly so people are reminded.

  83. Sue the Fury,

I have been here a while and wasn’t aware of not being able to post covered up spoilers in Unsullied threads. Fair enough as you make the rules but isn’t someone a sucker for punishment if they click on something that is clearly a spoiler?
Don’t want to encourage segregation but might be an idea to colour code the title or something for Sullied and Unsullied threads to make it very clear and folks ( myself included despite having not posted any spoilers in this thread covered or not) can steer clear of them a lot more easily?

  84. First question by my Unsullied friend when we sat down to watch episode 5×1: “So did everyone forget about the Greyjoy rebellion or did I miss an episode?” Honestly I just stared at him but he has a point. The Greyjoy rebellion is one example of a plotline that seems unfinished and it will be odd to make it reappear out of nowhere much later.

  85. Walder produces lots of offspring, but I don’t think we’d been given any indication he’s pulling a Craster.

  86. There doesn’t need to have been a reason to have Benjen in the show other than that it was a pilot and they wanted to stay as truthful to the story as possible in the beginning to make sure the book-readers were on board.
So I don’t think he will surface again. Maybe the White Walkers just chopped of his head and he was therefore useless as a wight and spread out in a field like that tribe in the first scene…

  87. Laura Pradelska (Quaithe ) seemed hired to play the part yet when she appeared in the show story she never spoke to Daenerys. Have wondered if there were cutting-room-floor scenes with Quaithe? With now an almost uncountable number of characters I doubt we see Laura again.

  88. The Tully story just was left hanging at the Red Wedding. If that isn’t wrapped up eventually it’s just kinda bad story telling.

Speaking as someone who’s generally an apologist for the show and all its works, I don’t think they’ve made a single bigger mistake than leaving every thread of the Red Wedding hanging. It’s the pivotal moment in the entire story, and left every unsullied viewer hanging on the edge of their seat to find out what happened to Edmure and the Blackfish, and the prospects for Walder Frey getting his comeuppance. Yet a season and a half on … nothing.

  89. TheTouchOfFrost,

    We cannot color code titles.

“We ask that all Sullied book-readers refrain from posting spoilers in the comments here, veiled or otherwise. No spoilers, at all! ”

A pretty typical disclaimer for us on an Unsullied post- this was the one on the latest Unsullied episode recap. But like I said, we’ll be sure to make certain it’s clearer from here on out so no one overlooks what we’re asking for.

  90. Sergei Walankov,

Most of the unsullied I know couldn’t care less about blackfish and edmure, although the matter of Walder’s comeuppance hasn’t really been explored in the books either, so I didn’t really expect to see it in the show

  91. Funny post. Good job.

This post also demonstrates just how bad the writing has become on the show, and that Benioff and Weiss are literally making it up as they go along.

  92. “It wasn’t for murder the gods cursed the Rat Cook, or for serving the King’s son in a pie… he killed a guest beneath his roof… that’s something the gods can’t forgive.” –Bran, Season 3, Episode 10

In this episode following the Red Wedding, Bran tells the legend of a king who visited Nightfort, the haunted castle they were in at the time. While the royal family was under the castle roof, the Nightfort cook killed the king’s son for vengeance and then baked the prince into a pie and fed him to the king. And so it was that the king unwittingly ate his own son.

The gods were so furious with the cook that they transformed him into a rat that would forever run the halls of Nightfort and eat its own children. And they did this not because the cook murdered his prince, nor because he fed the prince to his king, but because the cook had violated the most sacred laws of hospitality and protection.

The inclusion of this story in the books and in the series, with Bran as the teller, lets me rest assured that we will get to see Lord Frey receive a most deserved and glorious comeuppance before the final curtain falls.

  93. Stone Cold Bastard:
    Funny post. Good job.

This post also demonstrates just how bad the writing has become on the show, and that Benioff and Weiss are literally making it up as they go along.

I’m not sure how this post demonstrates that. It isn’t like some characters (which shall not be named for the sake of the Unsullied) aren’t in the exact same boat (no, that is not a Gendry pun) in both mediums…in other words: status unknown. Does that mean GRRM is also a bad writer? Now, if the show leaves all these characters as loose ends, I’ll end up agreeing with you some bad writing is involved. However, I believe by the end of the series, we will know the status of most of the characters in question.

  94. I could see Gendry not coming back at all. Yara coming back makes more sense.

    Where is Ser Pounce?
