El Punt Avui reports that Girona, used for location filming in Season Six, is capitalising on the success of Game of Thrones has brought it and has already begun negotiations with HBO for Season Seven.
The Catalan city of Girona stood in for King’s Landing and Braavos in Season Six. Councillor for Culture, Carles Ribas, says that talks have already opened between the city and HBO in terms of them returning to film there again, but asserted that nothing had been signed or agreed upon as yet. Ribas also stated that negotiatons would have to be careful as subsequent to Game of Thrones filming there, the Girona Film Office had attracted other offers, with the series highlighting the city as a potentially interesting place to film.
Ribas declared that hosting Game of Thrones had been a positive move for the area, with the producers, actors and locals all equally happy with the arrangements. The series is now so popular there that the high demand for ticket sales to attend the premiere of the sixth season caused the computer system of the Municipal Theatre box office to crash and a second screening to be arranged.

Hodor
Hodor!
A the news begins XD
Matthew The Dragon Knight,
LOL and we aren’t even at EP2!
Oldtown?
White Walter,
And KL….and Braavos.
Braavos and King’s Landing, at least that’s what the city was used for in season 6.
I posted this yesterday in another thread. So looks as though KL won’t burn this season (unless it’s used solely for Oldtown in S7).
Random irrelevant complaint about D & D
Ser Not Appearing in this Series,
What…?
Sooner or later someone will, it is known 😉
Ser Not Appearing in this Series,
Ohhh. LOL.
Off: Melisandre used this rubin at her bath scene:

Based on filming spoilers, and book speculation …
On one hand … I kinda thought that the duality of the Wall (ice) crashing down and KL (fire) burning up in E10 would’ve been a nifty visual to show the chaos that Westeros will be experiencing. But at the same time, there still is that scene of a dragon flying above KL that hasn’t happened yet, and Dany most likely won’t be reaching Westeros (and KL) until S7 anyway.
I haven’t read the book–>
According to Godwin´s Law of GoT.
Mihnea,
That was my immediate thought when I saw this posted lol well I have a feeling waiting for s07 is going to be really tough. 🙂
Sandra,
Mihnea,
Yes- ok- Thank you! =)
Sandra,
No, it’s just speculation based on Dany and Bran’s visions on the show. Although, Cersei is mentally heading in that direction in the books.
Ah, ye ole pre-emptive anticipatory complaint about people complaining. A time honored tradition indeed.
r-hard,
Genuine LOL. I needed that.
Ser Roger Sterling,
She did say, in the show, that she’ll burn cities to the ground….Just saying.
And I don’t think we’ll get as many filming spoilers as years past because Season 7 will have the heaviest CGI work.
Oldtown and the hightowers? If only 13 episodes left then why spend time on Oldtown?
Ser Not Appearing in this Series,
Mihnea,
D&D are FOOLS to use the same location for all these cities. Tired of seeing the same paved streets. And how about Braavos and Kings Landing look so much alike when they are even on different continents? They are killing the book spirit!
How about that??
Sou,
Almost fooled me.
Couldn’t agree more!
Me and all my friends are already calling it pave-gate, and have already gathered eight names for a petition. I expect a significant drop in viewership next week. The type of paving is just that kind of attention to detail amateurs don’t care about, but ends up ruining pretty much the whole viewing experience.
Sou,
Perfect! Now we’ve got it out of the way 🙂
It’s funny – the paving complaint is like what we call Routemaster Syndrome in viewer complaints about TV shows here “The show was set in 1924 yet that model of London Omnibus was not in production until 1927! It totaly ruined my enjoyment…”
More seriously, it’s good that GoT has made such a good outreach to some lesser known locations in Europe. It’s nice to see places other than London, Paris, Berlin, Rome etc featured in a high profile show and the economic benefits from new tourism being spread around.

Josh L.,
Season 6 is still too early for both those events given that there are two seasons left, though I’d say season 7’s finale would be a good fit (and as you mention having them both occur simultaenously would be great).
And the dragon above KL in the vision could easily have been the past rather than the future.
Sou,
I never even noticed that they were the same locations lmao.
Sandra,
That’s just speculation. The show has also done its part to hint at that, though, with Dany’s vision in the House of the Undying where the throne room is in ashes and snow’s falling from the roof. The theory pretty much amounts to Cersei going through with what Aerys first intended and setting the entire city on fire. No reason to hide it behind spoiler tags, though, just the clues pertaining to it in the books.
Josh L.,
That vision of bran seeing dragon over KL must be from past or in the future after war of the dawn is over because by the time dany comes KL will be covered in snow middle of winter …and that vision was bright sunny day
Laurentius,
you are a pro, my friend!!
Connor,
you are kidding me, I couldn’t even tell the difference from Dubrovnik of the first set they had (Malta?)
Bah, there’s a stench of book purists in the air!
A promo that passed on spanish tv just before the season 6 premiere showcased an interior scene that was shot in Girona and was said to stand as the Citadel of Oldtown.
Pretty sure that Oldtown is going to have a big role in the series moving forward.
And of course there are always the people complaining about the people complaining about the people complaining. It is a scary situation, a dog chasing its own tail, the Never Ending Story. I say – just keep swimming, “we will find out if we can cure your insanity”. 😉
Connor,
When Arya’s scene in episode 1 started, I thought we would get another scene with the High Sparrow on the streets of KL. They look alike, but it doesn’t bother me so much, since Arya won’t stay there forever imo. Why waste money?
I’m not sure where – maybe Censeros – but someone reported that there had been complaints about Ghost howling because book Ghost is mute!
Just here to say I’m happy to hear about s7 stuff already 🙂
She has used this threat four or five times at least. Two of them were last season, first to Jaime in episode two and then to Tommen in episode six or seven. That cannot be a coincidence or lazy writing. Cersei has a fixation with the idea of burning cities to the ground. We’ve seen the Red Keep burnt down in the middle of winter in visions. Also, in the books, Cersei is fascinated with wildfire: she burns the Hand’s Tower after Tywin’s death as a sort of purification ritual, and Jaime notes she looks as if sexually aroused by the flames. I believe the evidence stacks up and speaks for itself: As I see it, Cersei will burn down King’s Landing with wildfire once her whole family is either dead (Tywin and her children) or fled (Jaime), not only to kill all her enemies in the Red Keep and the Great Sept but also as a sort of purification ritual, not unlike what she did to the Tower in the books.
Laurentius,
Is this sarcasm?
Sou,
Pretty good, as long as that was a joke 🙂
Love this from the article:
How cool is that! Wish HBO would arrange a few extra screenings next year!
I watched it live on Canal+ but missed this. Was it a behind the scenes featurette about the filming in Spain, or a clip from the show itself? How haven’t we seen this???
And yeah, I expect Oldtown to be a pretty big location this year, with Sam spending I imagine at least a few episodes there. It could go down something like this: Sam and Gilly arrive in episode three, but Gilly can’t stay because she’s a woman so they go to Horn Hill; they arrive there in the mid-season; and then Sam must have at least two or three appearances in the latter half of the season, having returned to Oldtown, to the Citadel.
However, I don’t expect Sam to stay there for much longer. I’d be surprised if we saw any Oldtown in season seven, at least not with Sam.
Did I do this right? [/ spoiler]
Laurentius,
ROTFLMAO
Laurentius,
Pave-gate, lol, perfect
Hah. Fair enough. Maybe Gendry will come along and pull us all out of the water. 🙂
Luka Nieto,
They showed us 2 locations (this one and tower of joy) but they refused to go into details as to what they were standing for. In the case of the interior from Girona, they edited the clip to show the scene with Sam/Gilly/Shireen from season 5 where they talked about the great library of Oldtown just afterwards.
ore,
Which Girona location was shown to be the Citadel? I imagine it must be something like a Gothic church, right?
Sam should already know women aren’t allowed to stay at the Citadel, so why go there first?
Jack Bauer 24,
He may believe women can live there somehow, though obviously not study there. I don’t know. Sam’s actor implied in a recent interview that it will be ambiguous whether or not Sam was aware of the issue or not. At any rate, they must go to Oldtown first, even if they don’t reach the Citadel itself. They’re going by boat. Horn Hill is land-locked.
Luka Nieto,
Arabs Baths, maybe. I think the location had some sort of dome from where the light crept in. It was the clever editing with the scene from season 5 what gave it away.
Luka Nieto,
And Jaime said multiple times to Cersei that they would fuck/kill everyone who isn’t them.. They still have a lot of fucking to do.
You can’t make presumptions/theories based on what is obviously an exaggeration, when the people involved in the conversation have shown that they are prone to use these kinds of flamboyant hyperbole.
The fact that Cersei has a fascination with fire (and a stock of wildfire in the city) means that the theory is possible yes but i don’t think anything in the show has shown that she has any motivation/plan to do so, yet.
ladywolfsbane,
If they only do 6 episodes in season 7 they will!
