For all my disappointment with parts of AFFC/ADWD, I just re-read that Arya chapter and the section where she disposes of her stuff sans Needle is a beautifully written piece of prose and Maisie just put all that across without dialogue so damned well. It’s easy to overlook though GRRM master’s touch in storytelling that inspired the scene 🙂

Are we allowed to say that scene surely lived up to expectations for even the most sullied of sullied?

  2. I wasn’t sure at first whether I needed yet another video review to watch every week, but I have sooo come to enjoy these. Good job, Dame Pasty! I especially enjoy the little ranty parts and the written comments. Looking forward to next week!

  3. Arya havin’ a larf?,

Maise hit the scene with Needle out of the park. She was phenomenal!!!

Dame Pasty – Once again, thanks for the recap. I share your views on both Stannis and Brienne, and I also agree with the possibilities you present for the future of her storyline.

  4. Great. I really like your style. I’m fed up with the over saturated style of video reviews which is pretty much the norm nowadays.

  5. Arya havin’ a larf?,

I also went back and read the Arya chapter. Even the purest of the Unsullied could understand every word of her internal dialogue in the book simply by watching Maisie Williams’ face in that scene. What with all of the recent D&D gushing over the “new” Sansa, and while I have great admiration for Sophie Turner, I can only hope that they continue to recognize the importance and impact of Arya as a character and Maisie as an actress.

  6. Thanks, again for this, Dame Pasty. And also for the improved logistics.

I really like your Brianne/Stannis theory and its concluding possibilities. When I initially heard her say she’d be killing him to avenge Renly, I scoffed and sputtered into my Ovaltine as this possibility hasn’t presented itself in the books. But you’ve convinced me.

I appreciate your insightful recaps which shepherd me into the chute to Sunday eve’s performance; gets me primed, doncha know?

As you say, the visuals this year have topped everything. I feel fortunate to live in the Game of Thrones era of television.

Both AFFC and ADWD were much better the second time through.

  8. I don’t think Brienne will kill Stannis this season. Rather I think she is being set up to have a choice between killing Stannis and protecting Sansa. Worse yet for her, protecting Sansa might involve helping Stannis.

  9. Really enjoyed your work, Dame Pasty! 2 thumbs up!

I agree wholeheartedly with your assessments of Brienne and Stannis. Thank you for thinking through these new plot possibilities. And thank you for putting Brienne’s character arc in perspective. Well done and much appreciated!

  10. Dame Pasty, your video review is my favorite of all the video reviews. You are doing a fantastic job reviewing and commenting (which are always hilarious) on the episodes. Your spoilers at the end are super insightful. Thank you for putting them together each week!

I too think that there will be a choice that Brienne has to make, though I think no matter what she chooses, it will be a terrible/heartbreaking result. It is GoT after all. I’m personally dreading this storyline because it has a very very dark tone.

I can’t help but think how that situation may compare to the difficult choice that Brienne might have in TWoW…

between her vow for Cat/LS and her support for Jaime. I wonder what she signed up for when she yelled “Sword!”?
  12. Chad Brick,

    My thoughts as well.

I think Brienne will get captured by Stannis a la Asha in the books and end up in a begrudging alliance with him knowing that she needs him to save Sansa. And then she’ll realize he isn’t really all that evil, and maybe even give up on her vow.
  13. Chad Brick: Both AFFC and ADWD were much better the second time through.

And if you read them in the combined Boiled Leather FeastDance order.

    Chad Brick,

    My thoughts as well.

Exactly. I think she will be stealing bits from Abel, Mors Umber and Asha and ending up exactly as you said. In the long run, she has to meet Jaime again, as there is no satisfactory conclusion to their arcs without them coming together. However, this is mostly beyond the point where one can even speculate. GRRM did give us a clue recently though when he said

we would be visiting Casterly Rock in TWOW. That almost certainly means either Cersei or Jaime or both, the latter with or without Brienne.
  15. Arya havin’ a larf?: And if you read them in the combined Boiled LeatherFeastDanceorder.

I was not sure if this was said in fun, or if it really has happened. It certainly was something imagined back in the day when I was reading Dance and getting frustrated by the gaps. I did a reread of the two books this year in anticipation of Season 5 and like many here, found a second read much improved, still, I wondered if anyone thought about putting them together. So I did some searching and found this

Warning,POTENTIAL SPOILERS this leads you to a link that gives a suggested reading order of both books so they are not read separately. One link will lead you to a newbies version without spoilers, the other is for readers of the books. Please read the introduction first before you decide to venture further. (and mods, if this is not ok, please delete as you see fit)

    All Leather Must Be Boiled

Has anyone tried it? Or was it too cumberson?

  16. To ALL, thank you so much for the positive feedback. I spend many hours putting this together (much to the chagrin of my neglected spouse) so it motivates me to hear that you all enjoy it.

    Kit Harington,
Dillane is doing a fantastic job as Stannis! And Carice IS Melisandre. So it’s a testament to their acting ability that I dislike those characters so very much. Please don’t mistake my dislike for the characters as anything but the highest praise for the actors.

    Arya havin’ a larf?,
Terrific historic catch there! I never knew there were houses on the London Bridge. Apparently the last ones were removed in 1700’s but the concept is not without historical precedence. I honestly can’t remember if there were houses on the Volantis bridge in the books but if there wasn’t, there sure as hell should have been. Those graphics were terrific.

And I totally agree on that passage for Arya. I teared up reading it and I teared up seeing Maisie perform it. I just want to give her a hug (though I might get stabbed for my trouble). Ha!

    Hodor’s Bastard,
Yes, I think you have it right…

her choice on the show will be a similar moral choice as to what she faces in the books. And I can’t wait to see what “sword” meant in TWOW…..I’ll probably read it within 24 hours of buying it.

    ash,
I did a re-read using the order suggested on that site and it worked REALLY well for me. I enjoyed those books much, much more and was able to see how everything tied in to one another much easier as well. So I highly recommend it.
