Melisandre on Late Night, HBO makes a deal, and more

Melisandre

Carice van Houten made a guest appearance in full Melisandre mode on the most recent episode of Late Night with Seth Meyers.

Last year, Kit Harington as Jon Snow memorably turned up for a dinner party with Meyers, and this time around, a Game of Thrones character joins the Late Night host for a baby shower.

“Maybe stop telling people the night is dark and full of terrors,” Meyers suggests to the priestess.

hulu-logoHJ Holdings, LCC (Hulu in Japan) and Home Box Office, INC announced an expansive deal today in which Hulu in Japan will be one of the few to have exclusive subscription video on demand (SVOD) rights to HBO programming. For our friends in Japan, this is the first time some HBO titles are available. Among those available to stream are: Game of Thrones, The Sopranos, Sex and the City, and for the first time in Japan, Silicon Valley.

HBO’s entire collection of series will also be available to stream.

On their new partnership, both Hulu and HBO had gracious comments about the other:

We are very excited to be able to deliver HBO’s great line-up, which could be described as a treasure chest of US drama series, to Hulu’s viewers in Japan. Personally, I am very delighted to finally be able to watch ‘Silicon Valley’. We are committed to bringing to our subscribers in Japan the world’s greatest film and TV programming, which I am proud to say will now include hundreds of hours of HBO miniseries and series like ‘Game of Thrones,’ ‘True Detective,’, and other hits. – Kazufumi Nagasawa, Chief Content Officer Hulu in Japan

We are delighted to work together with Hulu in Japan to bring HBO’s distinctive programming to Hulu’s viewers, who have a great eye for foreign drama. HBO is committed to delivering the most groundbreaking and creative shows to its audience, and we welcome this opportunity to introduce more of our greatest series and miniseries to Hulu’s viewers in Japan. – Charles Schreger, President, Programming Sales HBO

This bodes well for those who’ve been itching for Game of Thrones to be available for streaming as it may follow suit with the rest of Hulu.

Additionally, Game of Thrones is nominated for a Shorty Award! The award show honors the best of social media that simply couldn’t resist the Instagram photos of the cast with their Funko Pop! counterparts.

  1. I want a Valyrian steel rattlesword! While the perfect present for parents, a sword might not be a very Gouda present for a newborn.

  2. Sean C.:
They give awards for social media posts now?

I was thinking the same. Some folks need to get out more. Walk in the grass, let the sunshine hit your face…

  3. It is good that Hulu brings HBO content to Japan – unfortunately they seem to be aggressively blocking the Hulu USA content with Melisandre’s interview even when using hola. So, thanks but no thanks, I will continue to proxy to HBO now.

  4. Yeah… sarcastic whoo hoo to the HBO and HULU… as we Canadians always have to find a way around it, because HULU stinks. But huzzah for Japan.

It may not look it, but I posted two links, one an interview, one the baby shower. I hope there isn’t more on the HULU stream I’m missing, but I’ll never know! 😉

I’m more worried than ever about Melisandre’s fate this season… feels like a lot like a send-off for Seth Myer’s friend Carice.
  5. How cute was Mel in that skit…never broke character for a moment. I adored it. If we could have something like that several times a week, the wait would seem to go much faster for me. 🙂

For those hating on HBO…it might help to remember that without HBO it is very likely there would be no Game of Thrones at all. So folks who hate HBO pirate the show, that’ll teach ’em. /sarcasm

Thank the Seven it is Friday and two days away from a computer. Time to cook and eat and do some chores and get some rest, read watch a bit of the tube and Monday will be here before I know it. Where I will find the countdown clock shorter by two days. Gives me a bit of a squeeeeeeeeeeee!!

  6. Wait a minute. won’t people use VPN now to watch Game of thrones when it airs on hulu instead of HBO? Won’t it means that HBO will lose viewers for GOT?

  7. The whole “entitled” battle from previous comments sections was a good discussion (to a point)… however the people who are coming into other threads and calling for the trailer… they are acting childish and entitled.

For these people I truly hope that very minimal new footage is actually released. And that we get more teaser trailers like the Bran one and the faces one.

Life is short. Let’s enjoy what we got.

  8. I watched it last night, the interview was hilarious and so was the skit. NCW was fun on Jimmy Kimmel too.
And I agree with the comment above saying Carice’s interview had a sort of goodbye feel to it. I had that feeling too.

  9. West of Moon,

Oh, you think her own sacrifice will be required? Last season, when she burnt Shireen, I wanted Melisandre dead, but now I think I’ll rather miss her. Maybe because Carice is such a strong presence. Maybe they will bring Kinvara because there must always be a red priestess in the show (besides a Stark at Winterfell), no sign of Thoros returning. What happens then with Mel seeing herself at Winterfell? Another prediction she can’t decript? Or will she be there through Jon?

  10. Shy Lady Dragon,

I haven’t a clue what’s going to happen to Mel. As much as I dislike her, I’d hate to see her go.
It was just a weird gut feeling I got while watching, it was the same feeling I had during Kit’s interview with him last year (and last year I wasn’t on this site so I wasn’t privy to spoilers or in the know about what was coming up during the season).

  11. Mel is the best.
Hopefully, if they strike her down she will become more powerful than we can possibly imagine.

  12. Motherofmadness,

If you mean the interview with Nikolaj, the whole thing IS actually on youtube. There are a few clips with 9 minutes of footage in total, That’s it.

If you wanna see the whole show, there are sites that work in Europe where you can stream it.

  13. West of Moon,

I feel the same about Melisandre. I have never liked her but I like Carice! I will miss her presence if/when she goes. Her Instagram pictures are sometimes really funny so there’s always that to follow. 🙂

  14. I like her interview. Mundane takeaways:

    1) the face she makes after she says she checks the scripts to see if she is going to die is inscrutable
    2) she’s going to the gym so she has another nude scene
    3) the show is going to get even darker, and “it’s not going to get warmer, and it’s not going to get warmer for me either.”
    4) D&D wrote “bitch please” into a script

Which was appropriate for the look on her face in that scene. I would guess she survives the season, because when she talked about wanting lighter beats to play for the character, it sounded like a problem for the future.

I would like to see Mel greatly affected and confused by Stannis’ failure, and I hope that’s what van Houten gets to play this season. Whenever she breaks her composure it really comes across well. I would love a replication of the book character’s thoughts about her prophecy.

  15. TheMannis,

Take a pill and chill, we’re in Tminus territory now………i cant believe the Hulu/hbo move considering hbo never wanted their shows on Netflix. As for that pic of Sophie I’m really big on her but she looks ill and not in a good way

  16. Mel and Arya will need to meet once more before Mel is off’d as per the scene between them in 03×06. Perhaps Arya will be the one to do it. But then if she finds out Mel resurrects Jon (if that happens, which I think it will) then perhaps she will let her live. Who knows… I would be a bit sad to see her go. Carice plays her incredibly and Mel is hauntingly beautiful in a deadly sort of way. Her creepy presence would be missed. But, as they say…

  17. Sue the Fury,

How is leaving a comment asking for a trailer “harmful”, then? It’s just as innocuous as saying “Hodor”, since it will lead to nothing. Pretty poor argument!

  18. Sean C.:
    scififantasygirl,

Given that Mel dropped off Arya’s list last season, I don’t think she’s fated to die by Arya’s hand.

I’ve forgotten about that. Interesting….perhaps a bit of season 6 forsight then 🙂 Arya returning to Westeros is one of the things I am most looking forward to!

  19. Cosine:
    Sue the Fury,

Did she say it is harmful? It gets old and redundant after a while if it is done in each thread. The mods can’t pull the trailer out of their butts.

  20. For some reason, after reading what Cogman had to say (and, while I always liked him, I now like him even more), all I could think of was “you go, Glen Coco.” 🙂

  21. Nymeria Warrior Queen:
For some reason, after reading what Cogman had to say (and, while I always liked him, I now like him even more), all I could think of was “you go, Glen Coco.”

Same here. The SJW’s are going to implode I’m sure.

  22. Newbietothegame,

Well “Hodor” gets old and redundant too, as do the numerous repeated discussions around the same old subjects, such as Sansa, misogyny, and mindless books vs. show nonsense. If a fan of the show wants to leave a harmless comment saying, “I hope the trailer comes soon!”, what’s the problem? They’re just expressing their love for the show like anyone else. Let them pine for the trailer or whatever else, what inconvenience or bother does it cause you in any way?

  23. Goos stuff. Hopefully Meyers keeps these going. Iwan Rheon/Ramsay Snow and/or Alfie Allen/Reek would be great

  24. Danyara,

I’m sorry but JS was just so much more funny. I mean the whole sequence of him explaining the storyline?? The antics in that was just priceless!!!

  25. Hahaha, Geemu abu suroonzu on Furoooo! Maybe people will actually watch? Like so many other popular hits that pass Japan buy, I think maybe one J-person out of the thousands I know here has even heard of the show, let alone the books. Not even an exaggeration…believe me, when you name your puppy Sansa…..people ask!! People still go to the local tsutaya (think blockbuster video) to rent (gasp) DVD’s and refer to video replay at buitiaru (VTR….yeah, video tape recorder) while bragging about their 2016 model (OMG! color) fax machines.

  26. Jack Bauer 24,

I get why they broke away from Sophie Turner for the end scene of the “attack”. My problem is that sometimes LESS is MORE. The writers and producers can give us the audience the benefit of the doubt that we know what the final outcome of the “attack” was. And that we can in our own minds understand how horrific that was for Sansa. Being a victim of rape sometimes I don’t understand the sensitivity of MALE WRITERS to be a bit more …. Well … Sensitive to women who have to watch these scenes. I understand not everyone has been in my place. But there are A LOT of women who have. I just found it to be more than what they needed to do to make their point. IMHO that is!!

  27. Sue, don’t know if anybody mentioned this, but Maisie is also nominated for a Shorty as an influental actress.

I’ve been preaching the gospel of Game Of Thrones here in Japan for ages, so I’m glad that my friends will have the option of seeing it through a streaming service.

That said, the selection of HBO shows that were made available on Hulu through this deal is pretty pathetic. It’s missing a ton of shows, both current (Veep, The Leftovers, Vinyl, Togetherness etc.) and classic (Oz, Deadwood, most of the miniseries, etc.). Only three seasons of the Wire and one season of Boardwalk Empire are available, which is plain stupid.

As for Game Of Thrones? Only one season available right now. They’ve promised to release further seasons in the coming weeks, but I highly doubt that they’ll get season 6 until months later. GoT is also being shown on a premium satellite network here called Star Channel, and I would assume that they won’t be okay with Hulu Japan showing S6 without some considerable time delay.

This news really shouldn’t matter to anyone who lives outside of Japan, except in the sense that it’ll lead to additional revenue streams for HBO which they can then pump into creating more quality content for all of us. I’m Japanese, but my English is good enough for me to enjoy American shows without requiring Japanese subtitles, so I’ll stick to my trusty VPN service and HBO Now (sorry, Star Channel). I know it’s not legit, but HBO is getting the same money from me that they get from their American viewers, so they can just stop complaining.

  29. My brother was doing time for 4 years in prison, and in his time, he read books, read because there was nothing else to do but read. He was never a fantasy fan, never a “reading” fan. Yet, he wrote me every week about this crazy, emotional story called “A Song of Ice & Fire”, that I HAD to read. Finally, I read the first book myself, the next week I was reading the second book and less than that, I was reading A Storm of Swords. I heard a rumor that HBO had purchased the option to adapt the series into a TV series. I kept him updated on the info, finally it had been greenlighted, and by the time he got out, HBO had set the premiere date. Growing up, my family never had cable. We HAD to get HBO to watch this series. We purchased Directv, and HBO just for “Game of Thrones.” Finally, he was free and we watched it both together , anticipating the words “the things I do for love…” It was one of the greatest moments of my life I treasure to this day.

Now here we are, completely oblivious to what awaits us in season 6. My, how time flys and anticipations tease us.

  30. When I read this headline, I thought perhaps the long-awaited IMAX deal had been made. 🙁
Carice was great in that skit! Love her! I hope she doesn’t leave the show, but the night…well, you know. 😉
I thought this was a community where we could come and share our feelings about the show. If so, that would include frustration, longing, etc. Don’t piss on someone else’s expression of feelings just ’cause it annoys you! As long as someone is respectful in their post, there is no reason to fill the thread with attacks on their respectful expression of frustration and longing. THAT is disrespectful. [steps down from soap box]
I need an IMAX or a trailer or a time-turner too, Jack. Thanks for sharing my frustration and longing.

  31. shuniku,

I moved to Japan last August and wasn’t sure how I would watch season six so I was excited to know Hulu would be streaming game of thrones. If it will not be available until much later as you say that’s very disappointing! I will have to consider my options now. I’m against illegally downloading for professional reasons but there don’t seem to be many affordable outlets for immediate gratification. 😉

  32. Fuck Hulo ! I can’t see clips on it either (I’m in Spain).

So did a web trawl and found the ‘Melisandre at a Baby Shower’ here… Its very funny. Enjoy 🙂

  33. Who else would be good in a Seth Meyers skit? Arya goes to high school, or a beauty pageant (talent: assassination) could be funny.
