  1. Just missed the chance at my first Hodor. Oh well.

Yay! Open chat is up! Been waiting all day for it! Waiting up till 2am to watch the show streamed on Nowtv here in the UK. Cannot wait!

  2. I have a feeling episode two will be awesome and internet breaking! Shit’s gonna happen!

  3. Bran!

“I’ve never been much of a fighter. Apologies for what you’re about to see.”

  4. Waiting till 4am here in Europe. I have really high hopes for this episode, hopefully it will live up to our expectations! Less than 4 hours left…

  5. Tormund and Wun Wun!!!!
can’t wait to see my boys the wildlings!!!!

  6. Adam:
for Hbo now subscribers, you can watch the episode live right

It’s not a live stream, but the episode is up on demand right at 9pm when it airs.

  7. Adam,

Yes. It took me about 10 minutes to get it working though, but I assume they’ve looked into the glitches by now.

  8. The only comment I’ll make is that I’m somewhat surprised that this episode is somewhat on the short side?

A lot of stuff is gonna happen in this one.

  9. I have a feeling this is going to be one of the best GOT episodes to date. If some of the things happen I think are going to this episode. . Just watch. …

    HYPEEE!!!!!

  10. Today is the day that I’ve been wating for two years!!! Bran is back!! I can’t believe 🙂

  11. All right, crazy crackpot theory…

What if the Sons of the Harpy work for Euron? If he’s been around the world, he would probably be capable of that. Maybe they burnt Dany’s ships so that when Yara and her fleet arrive, Dany will have no choice but to accept the help and ally with the Greyjoys…
  12. Thorne gave Davos until sundown to come out… so assuming they are to survive the coming mini battle, Ed, Tormund, and Wun-Wun should probably be arriving by end of ep right?

  13. Can’t wait hype going to try to stay up but it’s a holiday here in the uk so if I don’t think I’m going I’m going to make it enjoy it everyone and see you at n the other side.

Can’t see Jon comming back tonight

  14. Ohh boy, Max von Sydow’s debut as 3-Eyed Raven, Brans return, Castle Black fight, Wun Wun and Tormund!!!!

And many more, oh man, this is hyping me uppppp!

  15. I like to use HBO GO on my PS3 because I can replay the episode immediately after it airs. I don’t have a DVR anymore so this is the best solution to that problem.

  16. I am looking forward to a week of discussions about what is soon to have just-happened. I almost enjoy this part as much as watching the show itself.

  17. BigMac,

I hope the harpy is someone we know for quite a while. Wouldn’t have the same impact if it’s some newly introduced character.

  18. BigMac:
    All right, crazy crackpot theory…

    Not necessarily crackpot…

Certainly the question of “Who’s the leader of the Sons of the Harpy” will be answered this season, given that Varys just set it up in episode 1.

  19. Will we get our first glimpse of the past through Bran today? Hoping for something! Very much hoping for that Davos line from the trailer to be in today’s episode too (I expect it to be).

  20. That opening vision scene of the good ol´ days of Winterfell is going to be beautiful man.

  21. Connor:
Ohh boy, Max von Sydow’s debut as 3-Eyed Raven, Brans return, Castle Black fight, Wun Wun and Tormund!!!!

And many more, oh man, this is hyping me uppppp!

Yes it is. I can’t wait.

  22. Matthew The Dragon knight:
    Che,

what Davos line is that again ?

I’m never been much of a fighter, apologies for what you’re about to see…

Says Davos as he’s grabbing Longclaw and the Jon loyalists are drawing their swords (from the first trailer)

  23. Woo-hoo! Hi again everyone *waving as usual*. I completely forgot we have public holidays at the beginning and end of May so am able to watch eps 2 and 6 live at 2am. Flagging badly at the moment though, so might have a nap and come back nearer the time; that’s advancing years for you 😉 Hoping for some serious smashing and stomping action at Castle Black and preferably a certain question to be resolved. I can manage an eyes-suddenly-opening-cut-to-end-credits cliffhanger but seriously hope it’s all done and dusted by the end of ep3 at the latest. Judging by the trailer

Sansa finds out her sister is still alive – squeeeee – and things are getting quite confrontational in KL.

They’re the bits I’m most looking forward to so liking anything else is a bonus. Do we have any idea when

Euron rocks up for the first time, gotta be fairly soon I’d imagine?
  24. Thanks George. Yep, that line! Best line from the trailers (perhaps on a par with “I choose violence”). Expecting the fight between the mutineers and the wildlings in today’s episode, so expecting that Davos line.

  25. Sansa, Arya and Bran all in the same episode for the first time since episode 405. I hope Bran’s reintroduction can really get people interested in him again.

  26. Lulus Mum:
They’re the bits I’m most looking forward so liking anything else is a bonus. Do we have any idea when

    It’s on this episode

  27. I am ridiculous about this episode. I’ve never been so excited and impatient.

Can’t wait for the Wall and Bran’s flashbacks!

  28. Sean C.,

Why “again”? I very much liked Bran’s story-line and I think it was organically integrated in the rest of the story. It gave a bit of variation from the packed political schemes elsewhere and I liked the idea of this teenager expedition in the White Wilderness…

  29. No matter what happens I am beyond hype for the one and only…

I won’t complain if we get some NK/WW action though.mm

  30. Very much looking forward to this one. I have (slightly surprisingly) missed Bran, so I’m looking forward to seeing him, Meera, and Hodor again. I’m also looking forward to seeing Max von Sydow, who I know will ace it. Iron Islands should be good too.

It’s true that there is always something lots to look forward to on every episode of GoT!!!

  31. Sean C.:
Sansa, Arya and Bran all in the same episode for the first time since episode 405.I hope Bran’s reintroduction can really get people interested in him again.

Well, I guess I’ll depend a bit on how people feel about magic and fantasy?
All indications are that’s gonna be a bit more prominent in the final seasons…

  32. Meh I’m so sick and tired of talking about Jon.

I’m more looking forward to (minor spoilers):

Euron, flashbacks to Robert’s Rebellion, and Mace Tyrell going into battle with a feather helmet.
  33. How good does it feel when there’s a new episode of Thrones less than 3 hours away?!

  34. dothrakian raven,

Because from my personal observations of typical audience reaction, interest in the character has been progressively sapped each season due to the slow rate of plot advancement (books as well). To the point where he took a season off and most viewers thought little of it (or, in some cases, actively celebrated it; I recall at least one British newspaper that referred to this as a case of a show shedding dead weight).

  35. George,
Cool! Thanks for that. I’m a spoiler-but-not-book reader and

the latter seem stoked for his arrival. I am cautiously hopeful for some interesting action. Also, presuming the ship(s) we see in the storm are something to do with him, we’ll hopefully be able to settle the question of how many ships we are looking at once and for all 😉
  36. That scene with Bran back at Winterfell (Ned Stark’s youth?) has so much potential to be amazing, heartbreaking and sort of calming in all the horrible events that have been going on. Looking forward to that! For the rest, I just hope they don’t rush scenes!

  37. Lulus Mum:

Hey! *waves back from across the pond in America*

There will be serious smashing when Tormund and Wun Wun find out about Jon. It is not going to end well for those NW traitors.
I hope Euron is in this episode. The trailer showed him on the rope bridge so I think we will have him this episode.

Don’t be ashamed about nap time. Enjoy this episode and your holiday!

  38. I so can not wait for the return of Bran. I need a good vision.

    I’m really, really hoping for

Arya finally getting her warg ability, hopefully via kitty like in the books. Obviously I’m also cautiously optimistic that we’ll get some sort of resolution to the Jon Snow question. It’ll be brutal if they draw out a few more weeks!
  39. Connor,

I always feel like I’m about watch my sports team in a playoff game
So excited but anxious and nervous hahaa

  40. Sean C.,

Slow because it had a lot of character development and no bad ass action. Bran had to meet Jojen and Meera and head on north, that is it. There could not have been plot advancements for such an expedition. And despite this we got the Moles Town event and the adventurous arrival at BR’s tree. As I said his quiet journey north took place in a season where a lot of drama happened elsewhere so Bran’s scenes were adding to a kind of balance. I never understood all this critique about it. I had no problems with Bran’s year off for reasons D&D has already explained and I am eagerly anticipating his return. So I have no worries about this storyline.

  41. JustanotherSchemer,

It will be entertaining, and probably a bummer (for Sam). He is bringing home a wildling girlfriend and an “adopted” son! I hope the family isn’t a bunch of caricatures….

  42. I can’t wait to see the reactions on here after the servers calm down after all of the traffic lmao.

  43. I don’t even know what to expect – I saw the preview but that’s it- didn’t look t the photos of read the above synopsis

  44. LatrineDiggerBrian,
How could I forget Awesome Headgear Watch?

pretty sure people have worked out the clip in the trailer is in ep6, but that doesn’t mean we won’t see THAT helmet in others too.

    I certainly hope so! 😀

  45. Boltons
    Wildlings
    Ironborn Return
    Bran Flashback to winterfell……
    Christ I can’t wait XDDDD

  46. Nobody seems interested for that tower of joy video 🙁 It’s really amazing.

  47. Someone help me out. Why does my TV planner think this episode is called Homeward Bound…

  48. Really looking forward to seeing Brienne and Sansa’s relationship develop too. Last week’s brief revisit with them wasn’t enough!

  49. I can´t wait to see the reaction of Thorne and the others when Wun-Wun destroy the door of Castle Black, gonna be like: “Well, fuck” lol.

  50. Ross Doherty:
Someone help me out. Why does my TV planner think this episode is called Homeward Bound…

I think that was the original title.

  51. GeekFurious,

Well guess again. Today is Easter according to the Julian calendar and the Jewish passover also if I am right. A highly symbolic day. Christ is risen! And that is why I thought that tonight it would be suitable to see more resurrections…

  52. Angela,
hello America (North, South and Central) 😀 Just off for a quick zzzzzzz so I don’t hit peak hype too soon. After last week’s successful guesses (basically suggested about 7,461 possibilities for what might happen and ignored the 7,458.5 that were wrong) I’m gonna go with

Thorne and/or Olly survive the wildling’s arrival. Once Davos is safe he calls a halt to the fighting and something, something or other I dunno about that bit, it’s what the writers are for. I want T and O to see Jon come back and realise he was right all along. They can die later, there’s plenty of time for that!

With my dodgy counting technique (ie ignoring all the wrong ones) I managed 2.5 correct guesses last week. Gonna go up in units of 5, so see if I can manage 5 this series, then if I have before the end try for a 10. The day off is all the better because I didn’t realise until thursday just gone, so nice surprise!

  53. Jack Bauer 24: Can’t believe nobody mentioned Dragons yet!

Speaking of Dragons, my gravatar pic is of the Battle Beneath the Gods Eye! Black Dread/Maegor 1 Targaryen versus Quicksilver/Aegon 1 Targaryen.

  54. JustanotherSchemer:
Nobody seems interested for that tower of joy video It’s really amazing.

I’ll say that I certainly understand why D&D picked it for the TOJ. It’s perfect, and the terrain around it even looks like how George described Dorne in the books.

  55. dothrakian raven:

    Not today…

  56. Probably no Drogon, but definetly Viserion & Rhaegal from the episode trailer!! I think they are saving Drogon for later, considering how freakin huge he is

  57. Cannot wait for this episode. Staying up to 2am. Really hope we see some good Ironborn scenes plus some witty Davos one liners.

  58. Lulus Mum:
They’re the bits I’m most looking forward to so liking anything else is a bonus. Do we have any idea when

Lulu’s Mum!!!! I have no idea, but I’d love for it to be this episode. On a different but related note, my school’s mantra that we cheer at all the games is “Let’s Go Peay!” where Peay is part of our school name and pronounced pea or, well, pee. So for my exam password this week, I might be doing

    LetsGoEuron.
  59. I’m so nervous for this episode I’m making a joint right now.
    Too soon?

  60. Joffrey’s Cunt:
I’m so nervous for this episode I’m making a joint right now.

Lol! “We are the ironborn, and once we were conquerors. Our writ ran everywhere the sound of the waves was heard. My brother would have be content with the cold and dismal north, my niece with even less … but I shall give you Lannisport. Highgarden. The Arbor. Oldtown. The riverlands and the Reach, the kingswood and the rainwood, Dorne and the marches, the Mountains of the Moon and the Vale of Arryn, Tarth and the Stepstones. I say we take it all! I say, we take Westeros.”

    Let’s gooooooo!

  61. Jack Bauer 24: Lol! “We are the ironborn, and once we were conquerors. Our writ ran everywhere the sound of the waves was heard. Can’t wait for that!

  62. Daegon:
    GeekFurious,
Yes we will I’m willing to bet.

You are willing to bet actual money on a resurrection? Great. Let’s do this. Is there a website that takes PayPal bets and holds them in cue? Because I’m ready to put up $1,000.

  63. Sadly, I’ll have to wait till tomorrow evening (Well, technically today’s evening. It’s 1 AM here). That means avoiding Watchers on the Wall, Facebook and Youtube for a day.

  64. Lulus Mum:

    US for me.

It always a nice surprise when you realize that you get a 3 day weekend. I will get one at the end of the month with Memorial Day. 🙂

I got something wrong in the premiere. I thought that Doran would execute Ellaria and the SS. Well, that didn’t happen.

As for Olly, I am with Hannah? (right? If not, then I apologize for getting the name incorrect) who does Game of Owns podcast. I am a full supporter of

#GhostKillsOlly2016 or something like that on the podcast.

I hope I was correct on the Game of Owns people.

    Thorne, should be killed by

Tormund. a nice callback to their fight in Season 4

I will probably be incorrect on everything.

  65. Hooooooooodoooooooor

2 hours is a fekkin long time ter wait

  66. Jon’s storyline is going to have to be resolved either this episode or the next.

For those of you who still somehow think it will be late in the season –

    1) The show and book have established that resurrection has to happen almost immediately, because there is the chance of coming back “wrong”

    2) Why the heck will they have the body lying around accessible for that long? That is to say, unless Mel outright says “let’s save the body while I try and figure out how to bring him back to life” (which she won’t because there’s NO suspense in that), what excuse will there be for having Jon Snow’s dead corpse unburied or unburnt for that many episodes?

    3) It looks like from the stills that Mel

sets out from Castle Black by episode 5. They’re not going to lug a decaying corpse around with them – to what end?

I think tonight the first steps are taken right near the end

  67. Cregan:
Do the majority of people here watch at home, with groups, at a bar etc?

Home. By myself. Lights off. With some headphones.

  68. Cregan:
Do the majority of people here watch at home, with groups, at a bar etc?

I watch at home. I have the channel with my cable package.

  69. Lulus Mum: Latrine

Oh man…you guys already know what’s going to happen in episode 6? I’m not even going to ask how. Leave at least a couple of things to surprise, it’s so much better when you don’t know what’s going to happen.

  70. Cregan,

Just me and my sis – can’t do it with other people! I need to focus! Nobody I know analyzes the show as much as my sister and I !

  71. Adam:
for Hbo now subscribers, you can watch the episode live right

If you can get on. Heavy traffic kept me off for about fifteen minutes last week.

  72. Jack Bauer 24:
Do you think we’ll see necklace Mel or no necklace Mel tonight?

I think that Mel will reveal herself as she really is to Davos at some point, but not today.

  73. Reposting this as a reminder: Please do not post or link to any leaked episode 2 summaries or share any information about a leak, at all. Those posts will be deleted. Thank you!

Just stay away from the subject altogether, please. It’s only two more hours, you all can handle it.

  74. George,

Well, I guess I’ll depend a bit on how people feel about magic and fantasy?
All indications are that’s gonna be a bit more prominent in the final seasons…

This cracks me up – it is a fantasy story, after all!

    Cregan,

We are at home – would love to find a group that meets, but I don’t know have many friends who watch. Would be fun.

  75. Actually hbo has taken down the videos from that spanish guy. Obviously because of copyright infringment 😉

Mod edit: Which has not stopped some of you from spreading the info and hinting at things anyway. Stop immediately. – Sue the Fury

  76. George,

Aside from possibly bringing back Jon Snow, I wonder what her arc will be this season…her primary mission in the books is to champion Azor Ahai right? To defeat the Great Other? So in the show, I wonder if we will see a confrontation between her and the night’s king?

  77. George: The mods have forbidden any spoiler discussion here, and HBO has plugged the leak, but the plot leaked entirely to a Spanish speaking site. There is a post in the spoiler forums with a lengthy discussion on this matter.

Anyways, pretty soon it won’t matter anyhow since the episode will soon be upon us.

Who is that in your avi?

  78. Only an hour and half to go! We can power through. Get some food and maybe beer/wine. Get ready.

  79. Cregan,

Home alone! Although it airs at 2am here so not a lot of choice really 🙂

Cannot wait for tonights ep….just give me Euron, Wun Wun and a vision of Lyanna Stark!!

  80. Cregan:
    George,

It’ll be interesting. The fact that they went with George’s original idea ( the glamour thing and the several centuries old thing) implies to me that D&D will go with George’s “end game” for the character, whatever it may be.

  81. I am really curious on who they cast as Lyanna Stark when she was older.

    For example

    during the Tower of Joy

I haven’t heard any casting news about it at all.

  82. We watch at home. We used to watch at our good friends’ place in their home cinema, but now we all have too many kids between us and can’t coordinate meeting up any more. There’s always be one kid up, unable to sleep, and GOT is the least child friendly show I can think of!!

  83. Anyone else rewatching episodes this evening while you wait? I’m just watching Hardhome again. Too excited!!

  84. Che,

Yeah I rewatched last week’s episode again and I liked it a lot better the second time around. I think my hopes were so high for a Jon Snow revival that everything else was a blur and I just couldn’t focus properly on the episode. Don’t get me wrong I still dislike the Dorne stuff, but it was a good episode.

  85. Can the new episode be watched live on HBO Go at 9pm EST (concurrent with HBO live channel)?

I see people say yes, but in previous years that hasn’t been true, at least that was what I remember.

If in fact you can access the new episode at the same time it airs, wouldn’t one be able to fast forward through it and gain spoilers before the “live” episode got there? Maybe this short term spoiler wouldn’t matter? I could see someone using Twitter to really mess with people watching live using this technique.

  86. Connor:
I am really curious on who they cast as Lyanna Stark when she was older.

    For example

I haven’t heard any casting news about it at all.

Yep, they’ve really locked it down, but obviously they must have cast somebody…

  87. I guess it’s time to go to bed it’s 1:40 am here…..I wish you all a good episode, what is hype may never die !

  88. George: Yep, they’ve really locked it down, but obviously they must have cast somebody…

Who do you think they cast for older Lyanna Stark??

  89. Che,

Ive started rewatching selected episodes of season 1 : its been fun, I obvioustly missed a lot the first time around. You can tell that the budget was much lower; wonder if D&Dever thought about redoing that season with the CGI they have now. Still amazed at how well those kids have done and how much theyve grown as actors

  90. Cregan,

I watched that one earlier too. Perhaps a bit too obsessed with this show right now! I thought it was better on second (or maybe even fifth *ahem*) viewing. I think the first time I too was expecting to see more at Castle Black, but after that, you just enjoy the episode more.

  91. Andrew Wortman:
I have a feeling episode two will be awesome and internet breaking! Shit’s gonna happen!

I have the same feeling. Between Bran’s storyline and the trailer scene with Ser Robert Strong & Cersie I expect some pretty badass stuff to happen.

Edit: Not to mention the wall lol can’t forget about that!!!

  92. Dee,

That’s a good idea! Trying to think which episode to watch now in this last hour. Might go back and watch that one. Thanks 🙂

  93. Che,

Yeah 🙂 it’s only one scene but it felt warranted to watch that one:) I love that scene anyway! Enjoy!

  94. ash,

I totally know what you mean!! My husband and I rewatched all of GOT not that long ago and I was amazed at how young the young actors were (and how much they have grown in their art) and also how much more cinematic it is now. It’s particularly telling with the direwolves. In season 2 they are obviously CGI, whereas in last week’s episode, Ghost was seamless!

  95. Che:
Anyone else rewatching episodes this evening while you wait? I’m just watching Hardhome again. Too excited!!

I’ll watch the premiere for the 4th time. Hehe! 🙂 I can’t help myself.

  96. Connor: Who do you think they cast for older Lyanna Stark??

I honestly don’t know, but we may have seen her casting notice? ( the “young stunner” one for an unnamed role…)

I thought that brunette Israeli actress would have been a good candidate, but I guess she’s actually playing the role of Head Red Priestess in Meereen! LOL (oh, and it seems she’s also wearing a magic Ruby on the trailer!)

  97. What if the wights actually come through the nightfort?
Has it been mentioned on the show?

  98. God I love this song
Karliene is brilliant, passing the time with game of thrones related videos and episodes 😀

  99. Dee,

The thing is, sometimes things just have to happen for PLOT you know? I’m suuuuure in a vacuum they’d love to drag out a resurrection till late in the season, and then everyone goes “oh crap maybe it’s not happening.” But the truth is, who is going to lug around a corpse that isn’t doing anything for that many episodes?! It just doesn’t make sense. It has to happen sooner than later and I’m guessing it’s SOON GET HYPE LADY!

  100. HBO Go is not working for me. I don’t know if it is something that is going be a problem for anyone else.

I am sending a friendly warning anyway:

Anybody using HBO Go tonight. Brace yourselves, there may be technical issues.

(I use the channel so it is not a problem for me tonight. I wanted to make sure everybody prepares for possible delays and problems)

  101. Dee,

Possibly, but I think the action will just start heating up from here. The first episodes of each season are typically slow I think (could be wrong).

For me it’s great because as a book reader, I finally am at the point where I have no idea what to expect each episode. And I like that much better than I thought I would.

  102. Daegon: And what was missing in the first episode: DRRRAGGGGONNNS!!!!!!!!!!!!

Yes! YES! YESSSS!! I am so excited for a really juicy scene with the dragons; my anticipation is sky-high right now! :D:D
Plus Bran! Yes! With Max von Sydow! I will be pinching myself when MvS is onscreen tonight -never thought the day would come!

  103. Ugh I’m on a plane to Dallas while this episode airs. Then I have to drive all the way to Houston (3 hour drive) and check into my hotel before I can watch. The wait is killing me!

  104. HBO Go may work later so I could be doing this for no reason. It was when I clicked on the premiere for Season 6. Maybe the other episodes work and it maybe be fixed by 9pm.

  105. Nevermind. It works now. It was just my internet/ cable company. Sorry I thought it was something else.

  106. Jon Stark,

I got HBO GO to work on the plane last week for the premier. Jetblue’s bandwidth is better than most (satelitte vs terrestrial towers GoGo uses) but it’s worth a shot. Or you can wait. I watched the episode twice on the plane and again when I got to my hotel. Waiting might be a better idea if you are on a flight with GoGo wireless… Its very spotty.

  107. Bold prediction: I’m getting a strange feeling Jon might be resurrected at the end of tonight’s episode. I don’t know why. Logically, it stills feels too early to me. I’ve thought it’ll happen around episodes 5 or 6, but maybe I’ve felt a tremor in the force or something haha

  108. Ser Roger Sterling,

I really hope you’re right! Having his corpse just lying around is torture! I keep on expecting him to open his eyes and get up. It’s like they’re really rubbing in the ‘he’s dead’ thing. We get it! Now bring him back!

Realistically though, I think they’ll draw it out a little longer. I think the castle black scenes will be the fight between the mutineers and the wildlings. I don’t think they’ll have time for any resurrection scenes as well.

  109. DireWolfHeart:
    Ginevra,

    Mhysa ? Appropros

There is a scene in the books that the Sullied like to call the Tower of Joy (ToJ) for the location where it takes place, a stronghold called the Tower of Joy. Sullied look forward to seeing that scene this season, and that video is of an actual GoT filming location that we believe will serve as the Tower of Joy. I won’t spoil the scene for you, but that’s why book readers would be excited to see the tower.
  110. Ser Roger Sterling,

I have the same feeling. Maybe it is a disturbance in the force lol

I say end of episode. Like Bran when he woke up after his tower fall. Wasn’t that the end of second episode of season 1? Jon’s eyes will open and…credits. And I won’t care because he’ll be alive. *hope*

  111. Also IF

Jon opens his eyes at the end and if the twitter comment by a certain actor we know is playing Dayne is correct then it would be perfect timing. Jon’s eyes open-then episode 3 gives us TOJ vision before we see Jon again-so we can all be in on his special “song” and why he always had to come back. You know. Ice AND Fire.
  112. Lulus Mum,

Hello (big wave) I’m still here think I’m going to make it!!!!!! Is this the first time we see Euron????? Madness lol

  113. Staying up until 2am to watch in the UK on Sky Atlantic! Bank holiday weekend over here so no wok for most of us Brits tomorrow! So excited!

  114. Nadia,

    Ahhhh I know I know!
I have just taken his interviews to heart I guess hahaha
You’re Totally right! I am hyppppeeeedddd up.

  115. I love this show and characters, so not much is needed to make me happy tonight: just be loyal to the characters and advance the plot a bit more than the premiere 🙂

  116. Can’t wait to see Bran again … and Max Von Freakin’ Sydow!!! Welcome to our show!!

    Have a great episode everybody!!

  117. Kak,

No work, but I wish my kids would get the memo that it’s a holiday and stay in bed beyond 6:30am 🙂 going to be tough waking up early after staying up late to watch, but totally worth it!!

  118. So I think many people are open to a resurrection… I mean Jesus Christ, come on.

    But… If he doesn’t come back soon I don’t know… You can’t wait till episode four or later… That’s unrealistic…lol.

Dragons and shadow babies… Beric being resurrected… But you can’t wait forever.

It’s too bad we’ve already been spoiled that Jon is deader than dead and won’t come back.

    Go Bran!

  119. Nadia,

“lug around a corpse” got me thinking of Weekend at Bernie’s lol Or would that be Weekend at Olly’s?

  120. Dee,

Know how you feel I’m a Leicester city fan and I’ve also got to deal with waiting for Jon to come back!!!!!!!!?!

  121. Jack Bauer 24,

Is there any other show out there where people wish each other: “Happy second episode!!??” It’s so much fun to be a part of this!!

  122. red viper:
    Jack Bauer 24,

Is there any other show out there where people wish each other: “Happy second episode!!??” It’s so much fun to be a part of this!!

Most of the cast who saw the premiere have had to wait an extra two weeks to see what happens next, so I understand their excitement.

  123. Haven’t had time to get on here all day… but wanted to just say fookin come on 9:00! Woohooo. Have a great watch everyone!!

  124. Dee:
    weirwoodtreehugger,

    EVERYONE GO PEE!

Just went.. and you shortened your name.. ahhhhhh that helps us folks who are old and have to scroll up and reread your name a few times to make sure we are NOT misspelling.. lol. 😉

  125. Molestown bastard,

Man United fan here, so whilst i’m glad you guys didn’t win the league at Old Trafford, I hope you get over the line – deserve it without a doubt 🙂

Enough footie talk – 5 more minutes!!!

  126. Yay! I’ve distracted myself all day cleaning and watching Rupaul’s Drag Race and now my body is ready!

So excited for Bran’s return tonight. I have a good feeling about this ep – enjoy everyone!! 🙂 🙂 🙂

  127. Damn i cant watch it now, i just wanna know if in the previously on appear Stannis leeches

  128. Lyanna! Hodor!!!!! “He’s got giant’s blood!” Theory confirmed!!! (No, not really. But yes, really!!!!!!)

  129. You guys are lucky damn WiFi on this plane sucks! GRRRR! SO ANGRY RIGHT NOW! Hodor Smasha

  130. Is anybody else watching? Can I post what I’m seeing? Bran, Meera, Hodor. WUN WUN yeehaw mother fluckers!!
Edd is a hero! and there’s Tormund, OMG

  131. First ad break. Loving it so far!!! Had a laugh out loud moment when Wun Wun bashed that guy against the wall and everyone dropped their weapons. Now that that ‘battle’ is out the way, I’m beginning to believe res might happen this episode after all!

  132. ooo – High Sparrow getting cocky and Tommen is starting to realize what he should have done. Very touching scene with Cersei.

  133. “I drink and know things.” That just happens to be on my family crest.

  134. Please let Jared do this week’s curtain calls….he’s good at it. Goddammit. ?

  135. My signal is blocked due to thunderstorms. 🙁
Is Jon still an inanimate object? 🙁

  136. Draons got BIG. Don’t kill the help, OMG but Tyrion did it, he freed them.

And Ramsay, the son-of-a gun did it. Damn, I thought Roose was smarter than that. Another one bites the dust.

  137. Ramsay is fucked in the head mate, damn. They said MANDERLYS! They better betray the Boltons if they join them

  138. I keep meaning to wear a blood pressure cuff during this damn show and see just how crazy the readings get.

  139. Oh god, Walda 🙁

Ramsay needs to die in the most horrific way possible. That was so hard to watch.

  140. Laura:
    Oh god, Walda

Ramsay needs to die in the most horrific way possible. That was so hard to watch.

    I agree. It was horrible.

  141. Lundy:
My signal is blocked due to thunderstorms.
Is Jon still an inanimate object?

Yup. Jon Snow is pining for the fjords. He is no more, He has ceased to be. He has expired and gone to meet his maker. He’s rung down the curtain and joined the choir invisible. He is an ex-Jon Snow. 😉

  142. I dreamt a man without a face waiting on a bridge that swayed and swung…..

  143. Woah. Just wow. Poor Walda!! We all saw it coming, but that was very quick!

Also, would have liked a little bit of a gap between being reintroduced to Balon and him departing to suddenly!

  144. This is not happening. Jon Snow is DEAD!!!!

Interesting that Davos had to ask Mel to give it the old college try.

  145. OUR LONG NATIONAL NIGHTMARE IS OVER!

Thank R’hllor – we can all move on! Welcome back Jon.

  146. The real question of the night is: what is the over-under on how long it will take from the end of tonight’s episode for Entertainment Weekly to post James Hibberd’s interview with Kit Harington? You know that they’ve had that thing in the can for weeks now, but have just been waiting for the resurrection to air before they can run it. I’m going with 2 minutes, and that might be too long.

  147. Davos, how that man can talk. Never thought I’d see him complimenting the Red Woman, but there he is doing just that, and it’s working.

    YAAAAAAAAYYYYYYYY!!!!!!

  148. Holy smokes! I was expecting a more dramatic resurrection. But I don’t care. Jon is back!!!!!!!

  149. Colour me surprised! I expected Jon’s return to take longer and to not actually come about as a result of Mel’s actions. (Maybe next week might even reveal that it actually didn’t, or even that this isn’t really Jon.) A little anti-climactic, then, but I’m still intrigued as to where this will lead.

Great episode overall. I liked all the other scenes.

  150. Someone please explain to me the first seconds of the episode? When I turned on the TV Ned and Benjen were already fighting.

  151. Even though we all knew he was coming back, it was still fucking awesome!! Great episode!!

  152. Yay!!!!!!!!!!!!! I was all like, kiss him, kiss him, kiss him, kiss him, kiss him, kiss him, kiss him! I didn’t think it would work without the kiss.

And Ghost totally felt Jon leave him *before* Jon stirred and breathed.

  153. Oh, wow…

    Just…

    Wow!!!

(guess I was wrong about it being Melisandre to do it being too obvious)

Too much else to have even processed, yet.
If everyone else enjoyed that episode (and not just the end) even half as much as I, you loved it!

  154. Remember when people were like “Kit would never lie about Jon coming back alive, it would kill his career for lying”

  155. HOLY FUCK! The loading time on this website right now has gone off the chart! Jonny BOY!! He’s back. Where’s all those who doubted the lord of light now! 😀

  156. Even without the end, this was a fantastic episode. And that preview! :O

So I am guessing we are never going to see Willas Tyrell and that’s why they changed Hodor’s real name? Wow, I need to go watch this again immediately. So amazing!

  157. Thank God Ghost is alive. Resurrction was kinda boring but he’s back but boy he could use some sun.

  158. a gasping man has never looked so sexy – Mel I can almost even forgive you Shireen.

  159. OH MY EFFING GAWD!!!!!! That was unbelievabel! I can’t imagine how they will top this! Wow!

  160. WOW. They fucking nailed it. What an episode!!!

Time to reload, and commence mutherfucking rewatch

  161. Great ep., Jon’s back, but I can hardly even process that…

The Tower of Joy next week!!!

  162. Old Winterfell was magic! The two young actors who played Hodor and Lyanna did an amazing job. The mountain slashing the head of this poor guy! Cersei was an excellent mother again! Dragons and Tyrion well done! What a star is Maisie. She is phenomenal!!! Poor Walda! Euron was great! And Carice at her best!!!

  163. Here’s Jonny!

Resurrection was kind of boring, but at least he’s back. Now I hope his character doesn’t get butchered.

Yaaaas nudity!! Is he going to walk naked in the courtyard??

  164. OMG, forget Jon coming back we all knew that was happening. I thought they were gonna kill off Roose later in the season.

  165. CatspawAssassin:
I assume everyone else held their breath during the dragon scene?

Don’t bite the hand that feeds you, is what I kept thinking. I also thought Tyrion was a nerd who would know how not to get eaten by a dragon. He’s a Gryffindor and a Ravenclaw in a family of nothing but Slytherins.

  166. That was one of the best episodes they’ve ever done. Literally, not one weak scene. I was on the edge of my seat in that last scene. Bravo!

  167. TOWER OF JOY NEXT WEEK! WHAT AN EPISODE, EVERYTHING WAS MINT! EURON WAS AWESOME! EVERYYYTHAHAHAHAHANG!!!!!

    JON IS BAACK!!!!!!

  168. That was insane. Deep breath. Fuck. I didn’t think we would see that tonight. So glad they didn’t drag that out any longer- we can all move forward.

    EVERY scene tonight was great.

    FUCK YEAH

  169. Sweet baby Jesus YESSSSS Now on to Oathbreaker to confirm R+L=J and Jon Wreaking Havoc in the North

  170. Does Tormund say to Jon “they think you are a God” in the preview for “Oathbreaker”, or os he talking to Mel?

  171. Meh…if I had to rename this episode it would be anti-climactic. Lot of things happened that were predicted almost to a tee before the season started.

-Did Ramen Djwadi take this episode off? A strangely silent episode.
-Tyrion scene was good, but my goodness, stop using “punch in the face”, that’s a contemporary phrase, seems like the intern wrote that
-Ramsey killing Roose was terrible, just totally what was expected and lame
-Davos motivation to ressurect Jon = ? He’s so hell bent on doing it that he doesn’t care if the Red Woman, whom he hates with a passion, uses blood magic?
-Oh really it never occurred to Mel to try and resurrect him?

I think the Bran flashback at Winterfell was the best thing about the episode and it was all down from there. A slow, plodding episode that felt like a middle episode of the season, with some big events that were anti-climactic.

  172. What a great episode! Jon gets resurrected, Balon dies and Asha is already making a play for the Season chair…Kingsmoot is on! Jon is ALIVE!

  173. Well, they made up for the Dorne debacle. Great episode all around. I’m guessing no kiss of life needed because Jon is Ice and Fire – Knights King version + Rhallor old school magic = resurrection without Dondarion defects.

  174. Is it me or did Mel have the exact same disbelief as Thoros and she brought Jon back just the way he did..

  175. Well … that was a bunch of stuff happening, wasn’t it?

Yes, I am disappointed in the final events. Yes, I know I’m in the vast minority.

  176. all I can say is
    O M F G
    EVERY SCENE!!! EVERY DAMN ONE!!!

I was spoiled on all of it an it STILL was AB SO LUTE LY amazing

and the preview for next week!!!!!!

    “And now it begins…..”

    HHHHHHHYYYYYYYYYYYPPPPPPPPPEEEE

  177. Anyone else notice how she said the words seven times? And that there are seven stab wounds? (Am I stretching here?)

  178. Ginevra: Don’t bite the hand that feeds you, is what I kept thinking.I also thought Tyrion was a nerd who would know how not to get eaten by a dragon. He’s a Gryffindor and a Ravenclaw in a family of nothing but Slytherins.

I was literally holding my breath the whole show.. I am STILL holding my breath…and damn it all to hell I forgot to record it..

  179. I screamed, I cried, I laughed, I called my sister, I called my friends. I sent a meme to an ex I hadn’t talked to for years. What a magical night

  180. Wun Wun using a man as a flyswatter was still the best part of the whole episode

  181. Oh no. The ‘gift’ seems like a person standing behind the guy (an Umber?). If it’s gonna be Rickon, let it be the ‘fake Rickon’. Please!!!

  182. So, Jon was dead for all of 1 full episode. I thought they might wait a little longer to revive him.

  183. LatrineDiggerBrian,

I agree on the motivation side but not on the magic. She was praying and washing the body for his funeral. Remember Thoros told us he prayed for his friend, and again in the books we know which prayer he used. The only difference here was Jon got a shampoo and cut thrown in on top.

  184. I saw it coming, but I’m more annoyed by Roose’s death than Doran’s last week. I mean, he didn’t see that coming after trolling his psychotic bastard son last week?? You’re better than that, Roose.

  185. Rhaenys Stark:
    LatrineDiggerBrian,

Seriously now? Were you watching a different show maybe?

This show has set the bar so high, I just expect it to wow me with the story telling every season. Maybe that’s the problem. Everything went exactly as expected. Even the wildlings showing up at Castle Black was anti-climactic.

  186. What an episode!! My favourite episode in a long long time (maybe even ever). That was a thrill to watch and that ending!! I was sat up in my seat for the last five minutes, leaning forward, hardly daring to hope they would put us out of our misery or let us squirm for another week. The moment they showed Ghost sleeping, I kind of knew they’d red Jon this episode, as I knew they would have him suddenly wake up at the exact moment. I don’t know if this signifies that Jon had warged into Ghost or just (more likely) that due to their bond, Ghost sensed he was back the moment it happened.

And for the rest of the episode, just wow. Beautiful scenes between Cersei and Tommen, Sansa and Theon, that flashback scene, Jaime with the High Sparrow and that shocking scene with Ramsey and Roose (I saw it coming, but not like that!!). What an episode!!! I cannot wait to rematch it tomorrow. Now it’s 3:15am and how the hell am I supposed to go to sleep when JON IS BACK!!!!!!!!!?

  187. Ok ok, Euron was awesome, so badass, the vision at the beginning, was awesome, Max von Sydow was amazing, even though he had a few words, EVERYTHING WAS AMAZING.

    Tower of Joy next week!!!!!

  188. Yay! It’s finally official that Kit Harington is a pathological liar!
This week he comes back to life.
Next week he becomes a Targaryen.
    Life is good!

  189. Davos Should be King…he would make the greatest king of all

    To Emperor Davos I~!

  190. Have to say, that is pretty great timing to have ToJ the week following Jon coming back!

  191. Che,

Definite callback to Ser Patrek from the books with less limb ripping. I did my best Nelson Muntz “HA HA” in that moment.

  192. Just an incredible thrill watching all of the scenes tonight, beautifully shot, acted and impactful with great rhythm and flow throughout mainly, fantastic episode

  193. I have read zero spoilers, but my predictions after this episode are:

    1. Ramsey is dead within 8 episodes. Without somebody holding his leash, he is going to make tactical mistakes and be dead.
    2. Tommen is dead within 8 episodes.

As much as this episode was awesome from beginning to end…. I thought the best little sequence in the entire episode was when Ned was teaching Benjen to fight. It mirrored how Jon Snow teaches. It was a wonderful little scene.

Jon Snow is not going to execute his killers. He knows he needs every man he has. And they will be afraid of him now.

  194. Was anyone else surprised by all of the, “What is dead may never die” lines not being followed by, “but rises again, harder and stronger”? Balon even told Yara that she was supposed to repeat the line instead of replying to the line with the finishing part of the prayer. This is show canon, too.

  195. I was just texting a friend how balls-out awesome Patrick Malahide is and shit, there he goes! Wasn’t crazy about the introduction of Euron. I love Pilou Asbaek on Borgen, so I have total faith in him and his portrayal, the dialogue just didn’t sell it. Malahide was at 100% in that brief scene. Asbaek fell flat for me. Again, have total faith because he is great, just wished for something different I guess.
Did not expect to lose Roose so soon. Michael McElhatton is simply brilliant. Ramsey is a total nut-case. Cannot wait to see him meet his end.
I was actually thinking about the Karstarks today. Who knows where that came from but I don’t blame them for jumping the Stark ship. Their Lord was killed by a Stark and we all know how everything panned out there. That said, they have hitched their wagon to a complete psychopath.
I loved the Bran stuff. Loved the Three-Eyed Raven. Loved to see Hodor as a young boy. It was all sort of sentimental.
Sophie and Alfie were fantastic but am I the only person bummed out that Brienne said Arya was “with a man”. Ummm…Sansa was in KL for a while, she would know who Sandor Clegane was. Why wouldn’t Brienne share that?

Davos and Mel owned this episode, just like last week.

And the previews? “We have a gift”?

Your fate is sealed, young Rickon!
  196. my satisfaction with Jon coming back is being drowned out by all the horrors that await Rickon now….(if he is the gift)

  197. Whew hoo!! I knew he was coming back tonight!! They tried to fake us out but there is no way the story made any sense if they killed him off so soon!! And what about Tyrion with the dragons!! He’s gonna ride one of those babies for sure!! I did the dragon dance after this episode. Best GOT moment yet. Balances out the horror of baby dog food.

  198. gewa76:
I saw it coming, but I’m more annoyed by Roose’s death than Doran’s last week. I mean, he didn’t see that coming after trolling his psychotic bastard son last week?? You’re better than that, Roose.

Doran’s death was set up well and was a shocker. Roose’s death was soooooo predictable. You knew it was coming, just a matter of when. Plus it’s hard to believe that Ramsey can pull one over on the entire Castle. Really, he was poisoned? So no one is going to want to look at the body? The only thing that was surprising about it was that it happened this early, but I guess we should’ve seen it coming when they telegraphed it in the first teaser of the season. I was hoping they might turn it on its head and maybe have Roose kill Ramsey.

  199. Utherthelowborn:
Davos Should be King…he would make the greatest king of all

    To Emperor Davos I~!

He will be the hand of the king to Jon Snow….. Just as Tyrion will be hand of the queen to Dany. Will make for an epic final battle when Jon and the White Walkers fight Dany and the dragons….

  200. Who else was looking to the TV and going 123 now 123 now 123 now
    [Gasp gasp]
    Yeah, I fucking did it

  201. Wonder if Wyllas became Hodor due to injury helping Ned during the rebellion? Perhaps like Rain Man, the word Hodor is meant to be a form of Hold Door? Farfetched, but I was intrigued by Lyanna’s interaction with him, and how Young Ned had no qualms about him learning to fight.

  202. HodORIGIN story brewing! Anxiously waiting more insight…. How rad was the TER tripping the fuck out with Bran?

So much for the Tarly family reunion tonight. I think I can wait…

Sansa and Brienne, Sansa and Theon. So good!

Next time I decide to shoot an arrow at a giant, PUNCH ME IN THE FACE

  203. I honestly didn’t think the spoilers ruined that much for me. I knew most of what was suppose to happen but still the way it was delivered and the suspense made it just awesome. Im sorry but this was hands down the best show since we were all waiting and waiting for it to happen. Im just so damn mad I forgot to record this episode.. so damn pissed at myself. How can I rewatch it anyone know?

  204. LatrineDiggerBrian,

I have to agree as much as I fucking loved the episode, I feel like the jon resurrection scene was pretty fuckin lame. Its almost sad now that D&D dont have George hands on as much as he used to be and the show has definately suffered. I just think the last scene was super cliche and could have been done way better. But at the end of the day, hey at least its not Dorne

  205. gewa76:
I saw it coming, but I’m more annoyed by Roose’s death than Doran’s last week. I mean, he didn’t see that coming after trolling his psychotic bastard son last week?? You’re better than that, Roose.

I gotta agree. Roose is certainly much smarter than that.., out of character… The show does flub character actions from time to time.

  206. Ginevra: Why not Walder, right?

😉 I’d forgotten Old Nan was his great grandma. It was cool seeing her again. (That was her, wasn’t it?)

  207. Did I hear them say that Hodor had something to do with Dragons? Im screaming here bc I didn’t record and I need to rewatch this episode right now. How can I re-watch it? Anyone know?

  208. kells,

Tyrion was pretty good to. I mean I’ll hold out my neck so you can take my chains off. Tyrion’s got himself a pony.

  209. the spiders great balls of fire:

GRRM hasn’t written a great book in the series since A Storm of Swords.

This show has been constantly good since the first season. In fact, it has gotten better as the production values have gone up.

    Haters gonna hate….

  210. was it just me or did they pimp out the children of the forrest special fx wise? I feel like they looked just like little kids before and now they look a little more sci-fi ish… I dug it

  211. It is rarely that we have so many great performances in one episode. Maisie was great! Cersei was great! Even Walda was great! But I thin the young guy who did Wyllis/Hodor did an excellent impersonation of the real Hodor. And Max von Sydow what a voice!!!In the end I really liked Mel’s last effort and despair when she turns to Davos!!! And how many dialogues to pick up as BEST. The whole exchange between the Greyjoys in the bridge was a pearl!!!

  212. Che,

he moment they showed Ghost sleeping, I kind of knew they’d red Jon this episode, as I knew they would have him suddenly wake up at the exact moment. I don’t know if this signifies that Jon had warged into Ghost or just (more likely) that due to their bond, Ghost sensed he was back the moment it happened.

Thats exactly what I thought Yes that was amazing!

Yeah no more Roose, but poor Walda (I knew what was coming, I couldn’t watch and muted the sound, ooohhh) (I did laugh when Ramsey said ‘Id rather be an only child’ Oh he is so messed up. Please let him die slowly and horribly)

Mel showing so much emotion in her face; And Wun Wun blasting through, woo hoo!

High Sparrow better watch his step The king is no longer a boy.

Loved watching Bran’s vision, and how he so wanted to stay longer.

Oh there is so much to love – need to go rewatch it at least oh I don’t know a hundred times

  213. I follow the discussion here weekly but I’m a first time poster. I just had to comment. Best. Episode. Ever! We all hoped Jon was back but didn’t know for sure until tonight. Seriously I don’t see how the story could move forward without him. He’s the savior! They’ve alluded to that since the beginning! Haven’t read the books but I can see that! Thank the Lord of Light, Jon snow is back! But at what cost?

  214. I hope the gift it is not

Rickon. I hope it is an Umber fake out/double cross.

Please i pray to the Old Gods. I mean, they are loyal Stark people. They declared for Robb first to be King.

They wouldn’t give up his little brother to the Boltons, would they?

    Please just once, GoT, once.

  215. Ravyn,

Ah, so it took more than a little more than 10:00 for Hibberd to post it. A little longer than I thought.

  216. Sounds like a much better episode than last week. Unfortunately I cannot see it until next week, so you are all spared my nitpicking.

Bye bye Bangkok, hello Ankor Wat!

  217. My initial prediction for the resurrection came true!!! 😀

The flashbacks will all be amazing.

Roose’s death is too Doran-like for me.

    #PrayforRickon

  218. Cirsei might have a mountain but John Snow now has a Wun Wun. Forget Cleganebowl and just Fly Swot that mountain!

  219. Euron is ace?
    Roose is dead?
    Arya is getting by?
    Tyrion talks to dragons???
    Jon is alive?????????

  220. Stargaryen:
Who else was looking to the TV and going 123 now 123 now 123 now
    [Gasp gasp]
    Yeah, I fucking did it

I was actually saying.. come on, come on, come on …bring him back, bring him back!!

  221. Ice Spider:
Isit me or did Mel have the exact same disbelief as Thoros and she brought Jon back just the way he did..

And she said the same thing Thoros did: Please.

So it really is the magic word.

  222. Connor,

I was bored reading about the Iron men, but this episode made me stand at attention. That bridge scene, just wow!

  223. This next week is going to drag by! I cannot wait to see the TOJ and the reaction to Jon’s ressurection. That preview leaves me needing to see more.

I’ve still got goosebumps! My husband just got back from a gig before the episode and tried to watch it out with me, but too many whiskeys left him sleeping after that final ad break. At the moment of Jon gasping and opening his eyes and grabbed hold of my husband’s arm and shook him hard. Don’t think he appreciated it, but I was soooo damned excited!

That preview does have me very worried for a certain young Stark though.

  224. That was one of my favorite episodes of the series! I was on the edge of my seat. The Tyrion dragon taming was fantastic, the wall stuff was great. My heart was pounding that entire last scene. Only disappointment was that Roose didn’t meet his end at the hands of a Stark. But I guess its kinda fitting he caused his own death by handing over the reigns of his house to his sociopathic bastard.
BUT WHO CARES, JON SNOW LIVES AND I CAN’T BREATH YET!

  225. the spiders great balls of fire:
    LatrineDiggerBrian,

I have to agree as much as I fucking loved the episode, I feel like the jon resurrection scene was pretty fuckin lame. Its almost sad now that D&D dont have George hands on as much as he used to be and the show has definately suffered. I just think the last scene was super cliche and could have been done way better. But at the end of the day, hey at least its not Dorne

George has years to think of these brilliant plot threads. Even he was starting to sputter when he got to the last two books. Maybe it’s too much to ask of D & D to continue the same level of story telling, while still accomplishing all of the other stuff they accomplish, in one years time. I think Game of Thrones will probably start to come down to earth a little bit in the final seasons. I guess as long as they have enough massive zombie scenes, people will be happy.

  226. Ravyn,

I loved how the scene was played for both laughs and scariness. Dinklage really out-Dinklaged himself.

  227. AngryRosFan: And she said the same thing Thoros did: Please.

So it really is the magic word.

How do you know it was the same thing Thoros said? I don’t remember the words that were said, I mean did the show actually say that back in previous season?

  228. That episode was almost perfect (wish Roose hadn’t gone down so easily – he’s a far more entertaining villain than Ramsay imo). Other than that I found it hard to pick a favourite scene they were all so good!

But then “I DREAMT OF A MAN WITHOUT A FACE WAITING ON A BRIDGE THAT SWAYED AND SWUNG!!!!!!!”

I just have such high hopes for Euron motherfucking Grejoy!!

  229. Yessss … finally. I was prepared to wait all season for the resurrection. But I’m glad it happened. I was expecting more drama, but well, as long as he came back … Next episode will be cooler. TOJ!!!!.
… And the dragons loved Tyrion at first sight, they understood he was a friend of mom??? … Mmmm, or he is a Targaryen too????
Am I the only one that feels everything is going too fast???? … like slow down. I wish we had more dialogue between Sansa and Theon.
I covered my eyes when Ramsay took Fat Walda and the baby to the dogs… Karma though, but awful.

  230. Ice Spider,

Do you not have HBOGo? I have it on my DVR, but I want to rewatch the BabyBran, BabyBenjen, BabyLyanna, and BabyHodor scene on HBOGo so I can CC it and tell what they are saying. I didn’t get it all, even after rewinding.

  231. I think the most shocking part of the episode is that Hodor used to be a regular kid. What happened to him? I NEED to know.

Anyway, I’m kind of liking that the resurrection was mundane. I was starting to feel certain that Melisandre was going to fail and they were going to burn him in episode 3 and that would resurrect him, paralleling the dragon hatching. It wasn’t until Ghost lifted his head that I thought “oh shit, it’s happening!” Insert Ron Paul “it’s happening” gif here.

    Well played, GoT.

  232. I’m speechless. That was amazing! Loved Bran’s return and the little Starks at WF including Hodor/Wylis, young Nan and young Rodrick.

Poor Walda and baby Bolton! I will miss Michael McElhatton and his sexy, velvet voice.

  233. Now we know why Kit trimmed his hair that one time during filming. Mel did a good job with his haircut.

  234. Does anyone else think that Tyrion was able to “tame” the dragons so easily bc they SENSED he was a Targaryn?

  235. So is the likelihood of Tyrion being a Targaryen more than 50% yet? I’m scoring it 70/30 after that little scene.

  236. YEA BITCH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
    Fucking fantastic Episode!!!
    WOO!!!
    Shit is going Down!!!

  237. Laura,

According to subtitles, Hodor’s name is Wylis, not Willas. For once, I’m glad for the change, for I hate any much-loved character to share that typical Frey name.

  238. Was anyone else as jazzed as me to see Lyanna, albeit a child version? I thought it was pretty amazing. I don’t know how casual fans would react, but that opening scene was a hardcore fan’s dream.

  239. Matthew the Dragon knight,

Glad to find another Karliene fan (along with GRRM). I wish she would update the video for “You Win or You Die.” The lyrics still fit (at least for now): “A cold iron throne holds a boy barely grown” etc.

  240. Adam:
for Hbo now subscribers, you can watch the episode live right

yes…HBO now AND hbo go play it live, so we can. 🙂

  241. Ser Podrick:
So is the likelihood of Tyrion being a Targaryen more than 50% yet? I’m scoring it 70/30 after that little scene.

I was just asking same thing.. basically that the dragons KNOW he is Targaryen hence they allowed him close to him.

  242. The Bastard,

Believe me, I’m not a hater. You might be surprised to learn this, but I haven’t even read the books. I’m a show watcher through and through, though a very well educated show watcher. I’m just giving my honest reaction to the episode. This is from someone who actually didn’t mind Dorne and has defended D & D a lot. I still have a shit load of respect for them, I just think it was probably too much to ask for them to maintain the same level of unpredictable story telling on top of all the other stuff they do in a years time.

  243. Well that was like the best episode ever not centered on a single event, wasn’t it? The best episode that has gone to more than a few locations.

Wow. And the next episode trailer is just… wow. So freaking epic, especially for book readers.

  244. Ahhhh. I’m overwhelmed. Thank you Lord of light! So awesome, cannot wait for next Sunday to see the look on their faces when he comes waltzing out of that room haha. I had read the episode spoiler so I wasn’t surprised once I saw everything else was playing out as described. I wish I hadn’t read it now though.

  245. Flayed Potatoes,

Yeah, as much as I was holding my breath for something to happen, my head was swarming with the memes they will make with Melisandre-Jon-naked-haircut scnes.

  246. This episode sparked so many emotions, the show never fails to pack so much into one episode. It keeps me wanting more.

  247. Ravyn:
Was anyone else as jazzed as me to see Lyanna, albeit a child version? I thought it was pretty amazing. I don’t know how casual fans would react, but that opening scene was a hardcore fan’s dream.

I was super stoked to see her character being introduced. I am just still in disbelief about how fookin amazing the show was.

  248. Ice Spider,

IIRC, Thoros told Melisandre that he had lost his faith but when Beric died, he prayed to the Lord of Light “PLEASE. He was my friend.” or something like that.

  249. The Bastard,

I gotta disagree, I think alot of storylines that make the books so much more interesting have been glossed over or changed so much. I mean I dig it cuz its like an alternate universe if you will, but the books have so much more substance to them that the show just simply cant squeeze into an hour. Having said that, I feel like the dorne plotline in the books is way better in the books than in the show, and the daenerys plotline is better in the show that in the books, but everyone is intitled to their opinion and dont get me wrong I’m on hbo now at 9pm on the dot for a reason.

  250. My heart was beating out of my chest. Excellent episode. They are really coming on at full speed this year. Teary-eyed at the flashback. Euron will off the deep-end. Glad they introduced him with a little dialogue about his lore. Ramsay…wow, Ramsay…just wow…
Not a complaint at all, but BR didn’t really feel like part of the tree. Looked like he was in the upper bunk of a really cool bunk bed. Anyone else get that vibe? I have to say that Jon’s bod looked pretty darn good on that table, stab wounds and all.

  251. weirwoodtreehugger:
I think the most shocking part of the episode is that Hodor used to be a regular kid. What happened to him? I NEED to know.

We will eventually find out. As Wimsey is so very fond of saying, that gun has been hung.

  252. When Jon waked up it was like a zombie. Hope not UnJon is not the road but I’d like to think he’s gonna be a lot different from now.

  253. So many reveals this ep. Did I hear the CoF say Bran wasn’t going to stay in the cave. OM7G! Is that just true for show Bran? How can he get south with only Meera’s help? They were almost killed by skeleton wights coming north in late autumn and soon it will be winter and the Night’s King rules the lands north of the Wall… Maybe a certain missing lone ranger?

  254. A M A Z I N G !!!!!!! I’m just really upset I have no 1 to talk to about this!!!! My kids were looking at me like I lost my mind!!!! I completely geeked at Jon’s resurrection!!! I thought omg their gonna do it!!! then I thought omg they’re really gonna let him stay dead then I thought HOLY MUTHA****** HE’S ALIIIIIIVVVVVVEEEE!!!!!!! LOVED EVERY MINUTE OF THIS EPISODE!!!! Especially Tyrion and the dragons!!!

forgot to add this entire episode had me super emotional!!
From the moment Young Ned told Benjen “keep your shield up or I’ll ring your head like a bell” So much emotion!!!

  255. Luka Nieto,

yes, I can’t wait to see Ned saying “No, now it ends” in response to “Now it begins” – one of my favorite parts of the books. They were 7 facing 3.

  256. Ravyn:
That was one of the best episodes they’ve ever done. Literally, not one weak scene. I was on the edge of my seat in that last scene. Bravo!

Seriously! I wish I could high five all of you. It was a thing of beauty.

  257. ash: OH MY EFFING GAWD!!!!!! That was unbelievabel! I can’t imagine how they will top this! Wow!

My thinking is that if that got so much out of the way sooo fast: Balon, Roose, Walda and the baby :((, dramatic intro of Euron, … and Jon back in the second episode, there is sooo much planned for this season, just as all the actors said. I don’t think events have ever moved so fast in this show.

  258. Tbh I was expecting it different, eg it didn’t work so they burned him and then he came back from the flames

So I’m a little dissapointed at the “straightforward” way, just a “simple” Beric style resurrection, was hoping for something more of a brain-screw GRRM style but that is probably just because my pet-theory wasn’t how the show did it lol

But I’m actually also really quite ecstatic as it didn’t involve anyone else dying, eg I expected Mel to drop dead and for a split-second when Ghost was asleep I thought it was him that was dead

  259. Ice Spider:
Does anyone else think that Tyrion was able to “tame” the dragons so easily bc they SENSED he was a Targaryn?

I don’t think so. I know there is a book theory but I don’t think that is reason.

Tyrion asked Missandi (sp?) if they dragons ever harmed her. The dragons can be around people that are not Targs. They either choose to like you or eat you. Maybe they knew he was there to free them. The other one moved his neck to allow Tyrion to unlock the chains.

  260. This seriously was 1 of the best episodes ever …. The suspense killed me during the walda scene , Tyrion with the dragons and the final scene … Even the Cersie meets Tommen scene I was like is she gonna smack him for keeping her locked up … And omg that hug between Sansa and Theon …. The feels … Every scene was just so intense … It’s amazing not knowing what’s going to happen

  261. “They called it the war of 5 kings, and I’m the only one left standing.”
    Oh, the hubris.
Balon, your lifespan was measured in heartbeats from that moment forward.

  262. LatrineDiggerBrian:

Actually, when Roose said “you will always be my first born” I was 60-40 Roose will going to stab Ramsay.

  263. I wasn’t ready for Roose to be gone. I’m not interested in Ramsay without him there for one thing.

Tyrion with the dragons was pretty cool. And after he unchained the first one the other turns his collar towards him like “me too” haha. I am surprised what he said to Varys at the end though. He wished Varys would have stopped him from releasing them, why? they didn ‘t harm him.

  264. Ravyn,

I loved it!! and thern to see the

    TOJ scene

in the preview for next week has me running back to the book to reread it!!

  265. Jon looked a lot like dead Jesus iconography, once he was undressed. And on the third day, he was risen!! All praise to R’hllor. Now I pray to the lord of light that Ramsay will become direwolf chow by the end of the season, at the latest.

  266. Love the callback to Jon training Olly in the scene with young Ned and Benjen- it really is to show how much Jon is Ned’s son. Well…more on that next week, I guess.

  267. weirwoodtreehugger,

It’s probably an official theory out there that could be easily googled, but my feeling since the filming news of the WF flashback was that we would get the Hodor origin story, and it will involve

an accident, maybe a sparring thing with Benjen?? We still don’t know why he ended up at the wall….. to my knowledge anyway.

I don’t even know what constitutes spoilers anymore, but that is my theory based on the filming news we got this offseason

  268. question – who was it talking to Meera outside the cave?

I am sooo glad I don’t have to go to work tomorrow. Man its gonna be a long week…

  269. I think TOJ will be splitteed in 2 episodes since bran cannot stay in a vision for long periods. I hope I am wrong though

  270. What is it with GOT/ASOIAF and babies??

This is the first series where I’m not either pregnant or where one of my kids is a baby and I am glad – all the prior infant/pregnancy deaths have really hit home – this was obviously still terrible, but not as real when I’m not holding one of my own babied! Babies just aren’t safe on this show.

  271. Geralt of Rivia:
Looks like that horrible theory was confirmed right there.

Well, it’s certainly not “tinfoil” anymore, is it? I’ve always thought it was possible.

But even if Tyrion turns out not to be a Targ, I think that Tyrion Dragonrider may be pretty much confirmed.

    Anyway…

    1. Lyanna Stark riding a Horse like a Boss!!!
    2. The Manderlys are mentioned!! (Lord Manderly’s speech here we come!)
    3. Tyrion’s Dragon knowledge from the books finally makes it in the show!!
    4. The Dragons look awesome (thanks bigger CGI budget)
    5. Freaking Pike Bridge with Freaking Euron Greyjoy.
    6. Jon’s back!

I must say, for a show that is “diverging from the books” (supposedly) there were an awful lot of direct references to the books in this episode. LOL

  272. I don’t know anything at all about why the dragons did not eat Tyrion.

Well, I am off to bed. Work tommorrow. I know. Terrible.

I will try to sleep. Good Night all!

  273. The first thing Harington wants viewers to know after seeing his revival: “Sorry!” the 29-year-old says in the above video excerpt. “I’d like to say sorry for lying to everyone. I’m glad that people were upset that he died. I think my biggest fear was that people were not going to care. Or it would just be, ‘Fine, Jon Snow’s dead.’ But it seems like people had a, similar to the Red Wedding episode, kind of grief about it. Which means something I’m doing — or the show is doing — is right.”

    Lol!

  274. Ginevra,

I didn’t realize; That’s something they should have paid attention to. It is little details like this that makes this show phenomenal. I’m just a little afraid that little things like this might be less common now that the showrunners no longer have any source material to base their work on other than what they heard from GRRM’s voice.

  275. LatrineDiggerBrian,

I’m not saying I hated the episode and I get the arguments, but I just felt like the jon resurrection was a bit cheezy and cliche, thats all. I mean I loved the tyrion shit, I loved the bran shit, over all as a whole I thought it was one of the better episodes. I just thought they could have made the resurrection a little more mind blowing. I dont pretend to be a master screen writer but I do watch alot of TV and that was seriously cliche and not what I was expecting from a trope breaking series. I just thought it could have been done a little more creatively, I was expecting a literal kiss of fire or something where jon shoots flames from his lungs and everyone in the room gets scared of this dude, idk thats my 33 cents

  276. As far as the episode overall

Great first look at Bran, Willas! But also seeing all of the Stark children and Lyanna on her Horse etc,

Loved Ser Robert Strong just casually ramming that guys head against the Wall, and obviously this is a great thematic comparison to Wun Wun

But putting aside the fact that book Roose would never get outwitted by book Ramsay, this is a show where Ellaria stabs Doran etc so, and lack of Euron eyepatch….

Wow what a bloodbath, they really are moving things quite fast now, 3 characters

No coincidence they introduce dark-haired Lyanna in the same episode that Jon is resurrected, and of course they’ll show his ToJ birth right after he has been re-born etc.

Not to mention the tease regarding Benjen again, I highly suspect that Black rider with the flaming ball of chain is Benjen helping Meera (and Bran?) back to the Wall later in the season

  277. OH YEAH!!!

Cue the people complaining that the show took the most obvious road in bringing back Jon Snow. But sometimes, the most obvious road is the right one, and this was it. Bravo. SO happy….

  278. Angela: I don’t think so.

Yes but that was just him HOPING they would be nice to him.. it seems to me the dragons SENSED that he was like more than just a “friend”.. but maybe that is just me being overly hopeful that he is a Targ.

  279. Did anybody keep a list of names of people here who were saying, ‘Give it up, Jon really isn’t coming back’? They are due for some well-earned taunting.

  280. Ginevra: Don’t bite the hand that feeds you, is what I kept thinking.I also thought Tyrion was a nerd who would know how not to get eaten by a dragon. He’s a Gryffindor and a Ravenclaw in a family of nothing but Slytherins.

    LOL 10 points

  281. Tim of House Deddings: Actually, when Roose said “you will always be my first born”I was60-40Roose will going to stab Ramsay.

No doubt the surprise of it was that it happened right then and there. At first I wasn’t even sure who stabbed who. And then killing Walda and baby was just going through the motions, might as well just cut that part out and show their bodies next episode. Again, anti-climactic.

  282. I knew it from the moment that Podeswa announced as the director for eps 1&2 that it will happen in one of his episode. There was no other reason why he was chosen for. Then it was the coincidence of the episode with the Easter according to the Julian calendar! Carice did an excellent work because it was her despair and weakness that created the tension and her last sigh before turning to Davos was genial. I liked the simplicity and the “minimal” touch of the final scene, almost unattainable and in a sense exhausted because it is know that the most shocking events are happening in the most subtle and simple ways…

  283. Molestown bastard:
    Euron is ace
    Roose is dead
    Arya is getting by
    Tyrion talks to dragons
    Jon is alive

I’m sad that Roose died, too. But the good thing is that he died with that same shocked expression on his face as Robb did.

  284. I’m speechless, have to watch it’s epicness all over again, like now. Then I’ll place it in my top five, just don’t know which position. My head is buzzing, don’t know if it’s from the last hour, or the Innis & Gunn Rum Aged Ale I’ve been drinking (best beer on the planet); probably both.
Anyone know the actress cast as Lyanna, and I hope they split ToJ over two episodes.

  285. I don’t think Ghost was involved in resurrecting Jon. During the Inside the Episode, they said they showed Ghost cause he felt Jon coming back due to the close ties the wolves have with the Starks. As for the resurrection scene, I’m glad they didn’t over do it and make it on much. I was sort of consistent with how the resurrection of Beric Dondarrion was accomplished by Thoros.

    Great episode all around.

  286. If I had to take a guess, I’d say that young Wylis/Hodor says or does something in Lyanna’s presence that a young Robert Baratheon doesn’t like, and Robert whacks him over the head in a fit of rage. The point of showing Hodor’s origin is to show how insanely possessive and jealous Robert was when it came to Lyanna, and why Ned will need to

go to the lengths that he does to protect Lyanna and Rhaegar’s child from the new king.
  287. Mr.Bungle:
    LatrineDiggerBrian,

Well, if you spent months reading every spoiler on the net, of course you’re going to be underwhelmed.

I didn’t read any spoilers!!!!!!! I didn’t even watch the trailers. I didn’t even watch the previews for this weeks episode. Why is that so surprising that Jon was brought back by Mel? That was one of the most obvious ways it could be done, that she took what she learned from Thoros and applied it. I was really hoping it wouldn’t happen that way actually.

And didn’t need to see spoilers to think that Ramsey might kill Roose, Walda, and baby. Again, I was hoping that it wouldn’t happen that way because it was so fucking obvious and they were telegraphing it.

  288. The Bastard:
Jon Snow is not going to execute his killers. He knows he needs every man he has. And they will be afraid of him now.

Jon Snow has to execute traitors of this magnitude. Better to have no men than men who will stab you in the back and sew discord and treason. Off with their heads. Edd, fetch me a motherfucking block. If Janos Slynt had to die, Thorne has to, too. And Bowen Marsh, Orthel Yarwyck, and Olly.

  289. LatrineDiggerBrian,

Defended D & D about Dorne, what a load of horse manure, trying to justify wrongfully crapping on this episode, I mean what can they do, George didnt’ finish the books so hey, , everyone chill about nitpicking (including Dorne at this point, it is a moot point) they have to make it as they go.

  290. Ginevra,

Last episode and this one are definitely showing some errors, whether it’s their own continuety, and nonsensical editing, lines and such. This episode had far less, which is good, but yes I noticed that as well.

    Side notes:
Dorne can only be vindicated through WOW at this point.
As glad as I am that Roose is dead, I would think that he should have known Ramsay as a being a threat to him and Walda and baby considering Ramsay’s behavior growing up.
Speaking of Walda and baby….sick, psychotic wonderful scene.
Brans prequel visions, yay!!! TOJ next week, double yay!!!!!!!
Tyrion being Quentyn, very cool, though I would have liked one of the dragons’ chains broken like in the books. By the way, how are they getting out?
    Euron/Brudge scene was great!
I wish Damphair was more book Damphair-ish.
    Everything else was good 🙂
And of course as I mentioned before my love for Jon coming back to save the world <3

  291. Mel’s ruby necklace looked like it had stopped glowing and lost its power. Are we sure it was Mel’s magic that brought him back?

  292. ash: question – who was it talking to Meera outside the cave?

Leaf, the spokesperson for the Children of the Forest who was slinging fireballs at the wights back in Season 4.

  293. Flayed Potatoes:
The servers are still up! They were obviously resurrected by Melisandre.

LMAO.. I was having a hard time at first getting back on here and then it looked very weird .. the individual posts were numbered and now it seems normal. Do you think the mods worked overtime to make sure the site wouldn’t collapse tonight? Im sure that was a major concern all the comments going on.

  294. Ravyn,

I was. Lyanna was perfectly cast and looks exactly as I’ve imagined her. Pretty, dark haired, dark eyed, bold, rebellious. Hardcore fans all have a mental picture of everything that happened during Robert’s Rebellion and how all the characters looked. As a hardcore fan I was excited by the scene.

  295. Oh, and the GOT preview

It looks like they are doing the TOJ dialogue from the books!!!

  296. Ginevra: Jon Snow has to execute traitors of this magnitude.Better to have no men than men who will stab you in the back and sow discord and treason.Off with their heads.Edd, fetch me a motherfucking block. If Janos Slynt had to die, Thorne has to, too.And Bowen Marsh, Orthel Yarwyck, and Olly.

The traitors have to die I agree. How in the hell would he ever trust them again? But I highly doubt that he’s going to stick around at the wall very long to care. Its off to Winterfell to kill that bastard Ramsey!!

  297. Ghost and the dragons were so cute …. but I can’t forget Ramsay’s dogs … Of course, he was going to give the baby to the dogs … really awful, a mad dog indeed. I can’t wait to watch Ramsay die horribly. And that Karstark guy is Ramsay’s BFF. He didn’t look surprise at all … not big deal …
I’m so worried about Rickon and Osha … please, let it be something else … what kind of gift can it be???? Maybe they kidnapped an Umber????

  298. Simon: Perhaps a little lord?

NOOO not Rickon. Oh man, Ramsay did say Umbers were on his side, didn’t he?

  299. I’ve forgotten who the character was who was supervising Nedd and his brother at their swordplay, but the actor looked a lot like Podrick or Gendry with 1970’s moustache and sideburns. (I’ve always thought the actors who play(ed) Gendry and Pod looked like brothers.)

Can someone please fill me in on who that was?

  300. This was a pretty good episode overall, but I really don’t think the big character beat with Davos really worked for me. He’s barely interacted with Jon to date. There’s nowhere near enough of a foundation for him to start trying to talk Mel into bringing him back from the dead, which he wasn’t even sure was possible. This really feels like something Mel should have come around to herself.

If this was the direction the writers were going to take it, they should have had Davos accompany Jon to Hardhome and build up the relationship between them more. That would at least cover that a bit more, and bringing Davos face to face with the Night’s King would have made his sudden need for a “miracle” make a bit more sense in light of prior characterization.

  301. Hoderes:
    LatrineDiggerBrian,

Defended D & D about Dorne, what a load of horse manure, trying to justify wrongfully crapping on this episode, I mean what can they do, George didnt’ finish the books so hey, , everyonechill about nitpicking (including Dorne at this point, it is a moot point) they have to make it as they go.

If you read some of my earlier posts in this thread, I totally agree with you about D & D having an impossible task. I acknowledged that. Also, I’m not bull shitting on Dorne. People who are familiar with my posts here know that I’ve defended it pretty vehemently. Just get over it, I disagree with you.

  302. Dee,

    HAHAHAHHAHAHHAHHAAH YAYAYAYYAYAYYAYAYYAYYAY!!!!!

I think Oathbreaker is also in part about the Night’s Watch – Thorne breaking his oath but also Jon leaving the NW. No coincidence that Sansa brings up the vows his episode!!!

  303. the spiders great balls of fire:
    LatrineDiggerBrian,

Yeah I was expecting the Fire in the background to shoot up to gain Mels attention, then she’d say they have to burn him, and it is from his Pyre that he was resurrected

Most importantly perhaps Ed should have given the “Now his Watch has Ended” obituary, that way he is free from NW vows but it looks like Oathbreaker will make it look like he breaks his vows. This is important as people would claim he is still bound to NW etc when he goes chasing “Crowns and Glory”

That said, I accept that it is only GRRM who really has the art of the mind-screw in the ASOIF world and he is on the top tier of writer, and given they’ve run out of material to adapt they are doing it themselves and so like Crasters Keep, it drops to mere “great TV show” level which is still good, but they can’t transcend the cliches which is what has catapulted GoT and ASOIF to such mega-heights

That said, I watched the first 3 seasons and then read all the books so have been on both sides of the Sullied/Unsullied fence so are quite forgiving. I think a lot of Book Readers don’t often realise we could have had a perfectly adapted piece writing wise but the look and the feel and atmosphere would have been cheesy, or the acting not up to standard etc but thankfully both of those areas by and large are fantastic (except Sand Snakes)

Obviously TV theme wise, it was nice that they made it a parellel to bran waking up from his coma in S1E2, right down to the pet Direwolf being in the room

  304. LatrineDiggerBrian: So no one is going to want to look at the body?

Would you go up to Ramsay and ask to inspect the body, now that he’s Lord of Winterfell, Warden of the North?

  305. Redxgod,

Yes because Thoros said that the first time he did it had no faith in him and that it happens when you have lost your faith. Like Mel now. So the fact that the ruby didn’t glow has been explained before.

  306. kells:

No you weren’t, how do you forget the name of a guy who’s ear you bit off?

  307. CatspawAssassin,

Yes, it was! “I’m a friend of your mother.” LOL I like how the second dragon positioned himself to get the chains removed. Nice!

  308. the spiders great balls of fire,

The obsessiveness people have for GOT and ASOIAF to maintain this unwritten rule of trope breaking is the single saddest thing about the fandom as a whole. It ruins the show because you now expect everything to not follow a trope.

  309. So “Oathbreaker” has to open with Jon right?!

Who was Tormund talking to when he said “they think you’re a God”? Mel or Jon?

  310. Gator5000e:
I don’t think Ghost was involved in resurrecting Jon. During the Inside the Episode, they said they showed Ghost cause he felt Jon coming back due to the close ties the wolves have with the Starks. As for the resurrection scene, I’m glad they didn’t over do it and make it on much. I was sort of consistent with how the resurrection of Beric Dondarrion was accomplished by Thoros.

    Great episode all around.

I completely agree. Just like dogs can sense things, Ghost sensed Jon awaking right before he did. They never had Jon show warging ability in the show and they aren’t about to now. I think its the same with Arya sadly. I was hoping for a cat to be around….nope. In fact, unlike the books which highlighted Arya’s blindness not as a punishment, but as furthering her training using other senses (which in turn heightens and causes her to grow in her warging abilities), the show’s Blind Beth has been pretty pointless. She was placed in a near empty alley not learning anything.

  311. Ice Spider:
Does anyone else think that Tyrion was able to “tame” the dragons so easily bc they SENSED he was a Targaryn?

I’ve never subscribed to that theory, but the whole scene I was thinking about how that fire is being fueled.

  312. Flayed Potatoes:
    Ice Spider,

Sue is Melisandre who is Bloodraven CONFIRMED! I think so, especially after last week. ?

TFF… well all I know is that its a RED WITCH that is keeping this site up and going. Hahaha

  313. Sansa needs to find Nymeria and her pack. Sansa and her wolf pack then vs. Ramsey and his dogs…

  314. Not to be drowned in the Jon Snow and Bran scenes, Tyrion meeting the dragons and recounting that tale about Gerion and birthday gift was topnotch. I was torn between – this is so stupid, this is not How to Train Your Dragon, these dragons are dangerous, Tyrion is smarter than going near them and try bowing and talking nice to them like they are hippogriffs – and oh this is so great, A+J=T confirmed, Tyrion gonna ride a dragon sooner or later, just you wait, Robert Arryn, just you wait, dream come true, ..
Tyrion’s last dialogue to Varys negates the stupidty of the move, and shows one of Tyrion’s few remaining vulnerable points. I don’t care if it was irrational, but totally loved it.

  315. Ginevra: Would you go up to Ramsay and ask to inspect the body, now that he’s Lord of Winterfell, Warden of the North?

If I were a commander in the army who was loyal to Roose and had a whole bunch of men behind me, I would. I guess no one in the Bolton force was loyal to Roose? He seemed to be more savvy than that, that his whole army would turn on him for no reason, just because his crazy bastard wanted it.

Ghosts Lunch: Yeah I was expecting the Fire in the background to shoot up to gain Mels attention, then she’d say they have to burn him, and it is from his Pyre that he was resurrected

I agree with you on D & D and am forgiving as well in taking into account what they’re able to accomplish in a year.

  316. weirwoodtreehugger,

I’m kind of liking that the resurrection was mundane.

Yes indeed. I liked the way they did it. I didnt’ want fireworks and thunder and grand music – not necessary. The scene kept you on the edge of your seat, and when everyone one by one walked away -there was just the camera, watching. and we were all waiting. Suddenly, a gasp! oh my just perfecft

  317. Amazing amazing amazing. I’ve seen some complaints about Roose’s death, but I think it was done perfectly. He died exactly like he killed Robb. Oh the irony…

  318. the spiders great balls of fire:
    LatrineDiggerBrian,

You are complaining about it being cliche but you would have wanted fire to shoot from his lungs lol?

How about instead of going for stupid effects for the sake of effects, they bring him back the same way Beric was brought back?

  319. CatspawAssassin: ? I’d forgotten Old Nan was his great grandma. It was cool seeing her again. (That was her, wasn’t it?)

Yes! Ned or Benjen even called her Nan, though not Old Nan. It was great seeing a younger Old Nan. Man, I hope we get a lot more of that. Winterfell was almost my favorite part. That and the last five seconds.

  320. George,

Maybe not horrible. But this way it turns into cliche three headed dragon with Daeny, Jon and Tyrion. Three main characters, two bastards (if Rhaegar did not married Lyanna) and one legitimate Targaryen.

  321. After watching the Winterfell scene, I am guessing that Hodor’s origin story has more impact on the story than we would think. I actually think the people joking that “The Door” is a reference to Hodor might be on to something. Perhaps something happened down in the crypts or something.

I felt so sorry for Hodor when Bran started telling him about seeing him in his vision. There was definite pain there.

Another great small moment bound to get lost in the reviews was Brienne and Sansa talking about Arya. “She didn’t look much like a girl.” “No, she wouldn’t.” Sisterly love <3

  322. Hodor/wyllis either sees something that shocks him and he only says “hodor” or he kills someone and it shocks him. It’s like kids that see a something awful and then don’t speak for years.

Most likely not a head wound…but something traumatic to mess with his psyche.

    Don’t think it’s a head injury.

  323. Angela:
I don’t know anything at all about why the dragons did not eat Tyrion.

Because they smell “the blood of the Dragon”?

  324. weirwoodtreehugger: I’ve never subscribed to that theory, but the whole scene I was thinking about how that fire is being fueled.

Well … I am 50/50 on if he is Targ or not. I mean I think that would really tie everything in together nicely for all the right reasons esp. since he was so disliked by his Father and Sister. I just get this feeling he’s being groomed for something a lot more then just being Dany’s political advisor.

  325. the spiders great balls of fire:
was it just me or did they pimp out the children of the forrest special fx wise? I feel like they looked just like little kids before and now they look a little more sci-fi ish… I dug it

Me too, and it seems they confirm that

Bran won’t be tied to a tree forever
  326. Ice Spider: TFF… well all I know is that its a RED WITCH that is keeping this site up and going. Hahaha

The mods looked into the flames and got all the answers. That’s why the Lord of Light was trolling us at the end with the resurrection. He was busy fixing WOTW servers.

  327. Mr.Bungle,

This. It is only predictable because people go so crazy over this show and what is going to happen that every possibility has been discussed in some form or another.

  328. dothrakian raven,

You are intitled to your opinion, but I think the reason alot of people love the tv series as well as the books is the fact they dont feed you the obvious. I just think it was obvious jon was coming back, and the way they did it was like I was watching an anime cartoon or something just over dramatic and it kind of made bringing him back cheep and uneventful. I mean look at how they did the daenerys dragon birth, it was done really well and visually satisfying. Having jon just sit up on a deep breath has been done so many times its just rediculous, I liked the scene as a whole but I had to be like “I cant believe they just did that”. Its like an 80s karate kid roundhouse kick, and this show just wasnt like that before.

  329. Also, why the fuck are the umbers siding with the boltons?????? They have rickon!!!!! Ughhhhhh that pissed me off so bad !!!

  330. Kamali: You are complaining about it being cliche but you would have wanted fire to shoot from his lungs lol?

I’m so glad the fans aren’t allowed anywhere near an actual production.

  331. Ice Spider:
How can I rewatch it anyone know?

http://play.hbogo.com if you have a regular cable subscription to HBO. You have to login, and they’ll make you choose your cable company (hopefully yours is there) and you login with your email and password to your cable company. I hope that works for you.

  332. Since TOJ will be next week I have my small crackpot theory:

Benjen Stark & Howland Reed (or by extension, Meera) can close the circle and affirm, between them that Jon is the legitimate son of Lyanna Stark & Rhegar Targaryen. I believe that Benjen helped Lyanna flee Winterfell (and Robert Baratheon) to elope with Rhegar. A lot of people seem to forget that the Targs had plural marriages, and all of the resultant kids were considered legitimate. I’m pretty convinced that Lyanna & Rhegar did get married, and Benjen witnessed it.
Howland Reed can affirm that Jon is Lyannas son, & I assume she would have mentioned both his father + having married Rhegar before she died in TOJ. Howland witnessed “Promise me, Ned”; I fully expect he told his kids about it.
Bring on Ranger Benjen with his flaming morningstar!
  333. Louis,

Agree. It’s exhausting. Personally I thought it was perfect.

Also, that e.w. interview with Kit was adorable. If anyone was truly upset at him for being untruthful (and I do recall a few people on here botching about it(, then surely that disarming apology would help them to forgive him. Poor guy. He must be relieved it’s over!

  334. Ygritte: Well that was like the best episode ever not centered on a single event, wasn’t it? The best episode that has gone to more than a few locations.

Yeah, that was a very well-done episode. I really like how Roose’s death mirrored Robb’s death.

But I really like Jon’s return. I had feared that it would be a pyrotechnic spectacular, and although that could have been great, it would have been too easy to have it go wrong. But this was really good: understated, subtle, and very much harkening back to Bran’s reawakening at the end of Episode 2. (I did like how Ghost sensed it right before Jon woke up.) And: no warging, no Old Gods, nothing but the firing of a gun that they hung on the Wall 3 years ago.

Lyanna’s first appearance was good. For some reason, I envisioned her as younger than Ned, but I don’t know that we ever were given their ages. Bran’s daytripping was interesting, too.

Hiccup Lannister the Dragon Tamer, I mean, Tyrion was good. I think we’ve identified our third rider. I particularly liked how very cat-like the dragons were (once again).

And Castle Black was not what people were predicting. I liked that the coup was so generally bloodless. And the show is now set up for Ramsay to be the one to actually cripple the Night’s Watch. I do wonder if Sansa will actually go there: I did more than half expect her to be convinced that Ramsay would be expecting her to go there, and thus to find someone else.

But my real question is: did the Mountain crush the peasant for insulting Cersei, or violating public urination laws?!?!? That is a vital question about which I am sure that the viewers are wondering, and which I hope gets further explanation in the future.

  335. LatrineDiggerBrian,

Considering you started frequenting the forum after season 5 right ..

Maybe going to forums in offseason and theorising and all those chats about filming and spoilers are not for yodu then ..
Because once you do that you will know exactly what’s coming and left disappointed… Maybe you should follow the routine that you used in previous srasons

  336. Ice Spider:
Did I hear them say that Hodor had something to do with Dragons? Im screaming here bc I didn’t record and I need to rewatch this episode right now. How can I re-watch it? Anyone know?

They said he had giant’s blood, which has long been my pet theory!!!! That’s why BabyBenjen didn’t want to spar with him when Ned goes away to the Eyrie, as Lyanna had suggested that Benjen substitute Wyllas (Hodor) for Ned.

  337. Ser Podrick:
    Tony Stark,

Seems like it, and this will be the motivation for Jon to become an “oathbreaker” when he gets the pink letter from Ramsay to inform him that he has Rickon.

    Tony Stark,

    Tony Stark,

But I’m still holding out hope that it’s ‘fake Rickon’ – just like in the book that it’s ‘fake Arya’. If it’s the real Rickon, I’m gonna flip out!!!

  338. Ghosts Lunch: Yeah I was expecting the Fire in the background to shoot up to gain Mels attention, then she’d say they have to burn him, and it is from his Pyre that he was resurrected

I think a lot of Book Readers don’t often realise we could have had a perfectly adapted piece writing wise but the look and the feel and atmosphere would have been cheesy, or the acting not up to standard etc but thankfully both of those areas by and large are fantastic (except Sand Snakes)

Do you really think GRRM would not have told the show runners how Jon gets resurrected in the books. If he was going to get resurrected via a funeral pyre in the books, they would have done that on the show too, surely. It looks like it will be Mel in the books too. I was a expecting a funeral pyre too , but they went for the more quite kind of resurrection. I hope we get a proper explanation in the future episodes why Jon had to die in the first place so that this is not seen as a cheap cliff hanger, but rather a requirement to move his story forward. What I am more interested now is what effect will this death and resurrection have on his character.

  339. Ghosts Lunch,

Spot on, I mean I think they could have literally done it a million other ways and it would have been great. But yeah still loved it. I mean I watch cheezy ass kung fu films cuz I like shit like that, just wasnt expecting it from GOT

  340. Maiden:
What a great episode!Jon gets resurrected, Balon dies and Asha is already making a play for the Season chair…Kingsmoot is on! Jon is ALIVE!

You forgot Tyriom releasing the dragons!

  341. Rhaenys Stark:
Amazing amazing amazing. I’ve seen some complaints about Roose’s death, but I think it was done perfectly. He died exactly like he killed Robb. Oh the irony…

I thought it works just fine. The Karstarks don’t really give a damn about the Boltons and really wouldn’t care about which “Lord Bolton” they “serve”. I don’t think any Northern Lord is going to shed a tear for the demise of Roose.

  342. Ice Spider:
Isit me or did Mel have the exact same disbelief as Thoros and she brought Jon back just the way he did..

I was thinking the same thing. Thoros couldn’t resurrect anyone until he lost his faith.

  343. Ice Spider: I just get this feeling he’s being groomed for something a lot more then just being Dany’s political advisor.

There is not much more than being Daeny’s primary political advisor. Tyrion enjoyed being Hand, and he wants to be that again. He does not want to be King, and that’s really only the next step up.

  344. Ghosts Lunch: Yeah I was expecting the Fire in the background to shoot up to gain Mels attention, then she’d say they have to burn him, and it is from his Pyre that he was resurrected

I do see what some people are saying. Especially when Davos comes right out and asks her if she could bring Jon back? That doesn’t seem like a Davos line. It seems like a fan’s line. And I do think more fire should have been involved in some way visually. Especially if it is outed next week that Jon is a Targ.

  345. dragonbringer: I didn’t read any spoilers!!!!!!!

Here is my post from earlier in the thread:

“I didn’t read any spoilers!!!!!!! I didn’t even watch the trailers. I didn’t even watch the previews for this weeks episode. Why is that so surprising that Jon was brought back by Mel? I was mainly frequenting the GoT50 threads and staying clear of everything else.

  346. Willis! 🙂 Having another “Walder” on the show probably wasn’t a good idea. What DID you see to leave you with one word.

Brienne not calling Sandor by name: I don’t think it was slip up by the writers. Maybe she didn’t want to concern Sansa anymore than she would be knowing her sister’s out there in the wilderness?

    Tyrion is boss.

When the camera panned to Ghost after everyone left, I stopped breathing. Luckily Jon did it for me. 🙂 Lesson of story: don’t rush the Lord of Light. Bless you, Kit, having to toe the line for all the fans who don’t read the internet or hang out on boards. Now you can talk (somewhat) freely.

  347. maester blaster:
So many reveals this ep.Did I hear the CoF say Bran wasn’t going to stay in the cave.OM7G!Is that just true for show Bran? How can he get south with only Meera’s help? They were almost killed by skeleton wights coming north in late autumn and soon it will be winter and the Night’s King rules the lands north of the Wall… Maybe a certain missing lone ranger?

    Flaming Ball Chain guy

The flashback once again named and teased Benjen, like the finale of last season. IMO he is returning this season and my new theory is that he will help Meera and co south

  348. Won’t it be ironic if Cercei’s Frankengregor is what delivers her third golden shroud? His aggressive stance at “the King’s orders” made me wonder. She does have the habit of producing her own worst scenarios.

  349. Wimsey:
And the show is now set up for Ramsay to be the one to actually cripple the Night’s Watch.

You’re really wedded to this theory.

  350. FFS, how are people STILL expecting that the resurrection would be any different??

JON IS NOT FULL TARG. He’s not coming back to life in a flaming funeral pyre. Hell, people, DANY didn’t come back to life in fire either!!! She birthed her dragons in fire, but the dead person in that pyre (Drogo) STAYED DEAD.

This was is the ONLY way the show has ever shown resurrection. In fact, it was almost a perfect mirror.

By the way, they made such a point of showing Jon’s blood being cleaned, and I kept remembering “there’s power in a king’s blood.”

Oh and NOT COINCIDENCE – the last “king”, Balon, dies in an episode where Mel needs to resurrect her REAL hero. She killed the past kings to help Stannis thinking he was the hero, but finally a king dies to actually resurrect Jon Snow.

  351. Kamali,

Like I said I’m not a master screen writer, I just felt like they could have done it so many different ways and it would have been way better… How many tv shows/movies have had that scene where someone drowns and they get the CPR treatment and and everyone has just given up on them and started freaking out and then they cough up water and “yaaaay! they’re aliiiiiive!” it was just not what I expected from the best show on television to use such a cliche, its almost a joke. I still loved it tho I’m not hating I just thought it was kind of lazy

  352. mgxgjfjksgkkxhkxjj….

Yeah, I’m still trying to collect my thoughts. That was amazing!! Tyrion and the dragons; Davis and Mel; Sansa and Theon!!!! JON!! Fooking fook!
Roose bit it sooner than expected. I kept my eyes covered when Walda and the baby appeared (peeked through my fingers the whole time though, lol). When I saw Ramsey next to that fire and asking to hold the baby I though baby back ribs were going to take on a whole new meaning. But then… Omg…
Wow… Cannot wait for next week! ToJ!!!!!!

I need something to calm me down….

  353. iridium,

Yeah, I agree. He has said so many times now that he thought people would be unaffected by Jon’s death, it looks like he really had no idea the character was popular. I hope he does not get too much grief over this.

  354. Hold the door
    Ho…ld the… Door…
    Ho…. The… Door…
    Ho… Door
    Hodor.

Lyanna and her stable boy. OTP

  355. Ginevra: They said he had giant’s blood, which has long been my pet theory!!!!That’s why BabyBenjen didn’t want to spar with him when Ned goes away to the Eyrie, as Lyanna had suggested that Benjen substitute Wyllas (Hodor) for Ned.

Ok.. thanks so much. Im staying up to re-watch the show. Its coming back on in half hour. I just saw that HBO is showing it again… didn’t know they did that since last week I was too tired to stay up. I should be in bed bc I was traveling again today since 2:00 am and haven’t had sleep since… so tired but too geeked to sleep.

  356. Daniellica:
Won’t it be ironic if Cercei’s Frankengregor is what delivers her third golden shroud? His aggressive stance at “the King’s orders” made me wonder. She does have the habit of producing her own worst scenarios.

Do you remember Cersei’s last conversation with Tywin. She says regarding Tywin and Maergery, something like “you’ll fight over him like animals until you rip him to pieces”. I think that might be foreshadowing to Tommen and Zombie Mountain.

  357. So Old Nan was Hodor’s mother? There is a story to tell about how Willis became Hodor and it might involve Lyanna…..

  358. Did someone already mention what Ned said to Benjin? And how Jon said the same to Olly? Loved that.

  359. Still Davos barely knows Jon and he asked Mel to do something? Seems weird, also would xpect some music to it. It was really simple or anticlimatic to some but thankfully over us. We can move on with this to the point how different he’ll be.

Thank God no politics at the Wall and loyalists vs nationalists. Next episode we’ll see their execution or some of them as a warning. He can’t let them go unpunished. So since we saw smoke coming out of Castle Black. Death by fire perhaps.

  360. carbonUnit,

Well that was the whole point of last episode final scene – to show us how much she’s lost her faith and obviously parallel it to thoros

  361. Ser Podrick:
    Sean C.,

Good point. Davos was acting like he believes Jon to be Azor Ahai, and it seemed to come out of nowhere.

Yes, how was no one mentioning this? What does Davos care about bringing Jon back? He cares so much that he wants Melisandre to use blood magic after he absolutely fucking hates her for 4 seasons, and she is probably the one responsible for Shireen’s death? But all of a sudden she’s his buddy. OK…

  362. Wimsey,

good call on the gun. The jury is still out on warging but you may be right. I have to say though I did call a lack of retribution 100 times – so I’ll take points on that.

  363. I could barely contain myself when the Wildlings grabbed that fruitcake Olly! He looked like Joffrey having a fit.

  364. I am also SO HYPED that the episode the last king dies – Balon – is when Jon is reborn.

Mel has had to kill a king or to sacrifice someone with king’s blood to serve the Lord of Light at all huge moments.

    Balon dies = Jon awakens.

And focusing so much on the blood: “there’s power in king’s blood”

    HYPEHYPEHYPEHYPEHYPE

  365. LatrineDiggerBrian:
Meh I’m so sick and tired of talking about Jon.

I’m more looking forward to (minor spoilers):

    ROFL

For my part Brans storyline with the accompanying flashbacks will be exciting

  366. the spiders great balls of fire,

I am sorry I don’t see your argument. You obviously wanted kitch and spectacular fanfare with flames, smoke, salt and maybe some Rhllor angels coming up and down from heavens. Dany’s was Fire and Blood, Jon’s was different it was ice and the lack of the inner flame to believe in RHloor’s powers. It was subtle and almost exhausted, it was quiet and agonising. Ghost falling asleep, everyone else is gone disappointed and then it happens with the simplest and most logical way, the return of the breath.

  367. Ramsay is a G! He robb starked roose oh the irony! And roose was playing ramsay saying you will always be my first born and ramsay was like ya ur full of shit dad….
You know what would really go against classic tropes? If ramsay survives whole series haha oh boy that would be great. Jon and ramsay alliance to fight white walkers. Ramsay as azor ahai. The funny thing is that everyone wanted joffrey dead and he was killed by littlefinger not a stark. Then everyone wanted roose dead and he wasnt killed by a stark. Now everyone wants walder frey and ramsay dead il bet anything they dont die at stark hands.

  368. Ginevra: They said he had giant’s blood, which has long been my pet theory!!!!

Osha asserts that Hodor must have giants blood in the first series/book. She seemed to be serious, but back then we were still under the impression that Giants were either mythical or extinct.

LatrineDiggerBrian: And didn’t need to see spoilers to think that Ramsey might kill Roose, Walda, and baby. Again, I was hoping that it wouldn’t happen that way because it was so fucking obvious and they were telegraphing it.

I would not say that it was “obvious”: but it was definitely a possibility that they had set up. It was the sort of thing where people either saw it coming, or felt: “damn, I should have seen that coming.” And that is the way that it should be.

ghost of winterfell: I hope we get a proper explanation in the future episodes why Jon had to die in the first place so that this is not seen as a cheap cliff hanger, but rather a requirement to move his story forward.

Jon had to die for the same reason that Daeny had to be taken hostage, Arya had to go blind, Bran had to be crippled, Sansa had to be sexually assaulted, etc., All of the main characters have been laid low, particularly at the zenith of last year’s story.

Now, did Jon have to “die” per se? No: but he had to do something different from what the other primary protagonists did. GRRM hung the R’hllor Revival Gun on the Wall a long time ago, and B&W followed suit: and guns should not be hung early unless they are going to be fired later. (By the same toke, the Widows Purgatory of Vaes Dothrak had been hung on the Wall a while ago, too.)

But this is how stories are told: through the parallelisms in experiences among the main characters. Death was Jon’s version of what the other main characters endured.

  369. Jason,

A head injury would also be something known around WF, and he would have a visable scar. You are probably right, must be some emotional/psychological trauma. Perhaps something involving the crypts? Supernatural would be cool. Spiders big as hounds! We shall see…..

    Stoked

  370. I can hear the massive sigh of relief from the cast and crew of GoT going across the land….finally no more “Is Jon really dead?” questions!

I am not at all disappointed in how Jon came back. No big ceremony or flames or broo-ha-ha, I loved it. How ‘back’ he’ll be right now will be interesting to see.

I now give Tyrion the title of Breaker of Chains. Those 2 will love him. Dany shut them away, and he freed them. 🙂

  371. Terrific episode. We knew the resurrection was coming and it doesn’t matter because it was handled very well anyway. Nice.

    Small good moments:

–“Keep your shield up or I’ll ring your head like a bell.” — Ned, to Benjen, same words Jon said to Olly, including tousling his hair

    –Young Hodor!!

–“We have the Manderleys, the Umbers and the Karstarks…” Interesting name-dropping there, as we see.

–Now then. We lose several in this episode, in order of importance:
—Michael McElhatton, who really just kicked all kinds of ass as Roose.
—Patrick Malahide, such a perfect Balon.
—Elizabeth Webster, who really did a nice job in a small role as Walda.
—The dude who gets his head smashed by the mountain, and of course the guy who gets mashed by Wun Wun. I’m not sure who got it worse.

–There’s a moment when Theon is kneeling before the fire, with his hands on his knees and hair dangling, where he looks decidedly like Gollum. Visually, anyway, it was pretty striking.

  372. Sean C.:

Yeah, honestly, the resurrection part was my least favorite of the episode but I am just glad it’s done. There was literally no reason for Davos to plead with Mel to rez Jon. He knew him for a couple months maybe and it’s not like he was friendly enough with her to want to snap her out of her funk. I don’t even know that logical, pragmatic Davos would have begged Mel to bring Stannis back if he knew she could. He’s not a big magic fan to begin with and he especially hates her magic. lol. Oh well, it got us where we needed to be. And the rest of the episode was just so great that I’ll forgive it 🙂

  373. So will Jon have the man bun because Mel cut his hair and what armor will he wear now since his other was cut up?

  374. Wimsey: There is not much more than being Daeny’s primary political advisor.Tyrion enjoyed being Hand, and he wants to be that again. He does not want to be King, and that’s really only the next step up.

No.. I meant groomed as in the show runners are going to have more in store for him then what we think.. we THINK that is all he wants and probably is all he wants but that in fact LIFE is going throw him a curve ball and he’s going to find out that he is indeed a Targ. Im not saying its going to be 100% true.. I just felt that vibe watching the show. I will gladly wait to see how it all unfolds this season though. I don’t like to over think what is going to happen and just enjoy what they do with the storylines. Be happy with it and just enjoy it.!!

  375. Simon: good call on the gun.

heh, I’ve been blathering about guns on this site since before it was this site! 😉

  376. Ginevra,

My fave scenes (so many to choose from) were the ones with Tyrion and the ones with The Mounta– huh, I mean Ser Robert Strong.

  377. LatrineDiggerBrian,

    I think

next episode we’ll find out Mel had to kill herself to make the res work.

    thats why she had reservations…

This was one of my top 3 favorite episodes ever. I’m thinking next week will be just as good if not better.

  378. Nadia:
I am also SO HYPED that the episode the last king dies – Balon – is when Jon is reborn.

Mel has had to kill a king or to sacrifice someone with king’s blood to serve the Lord of Light at all huge moments.

    Balon dies = Jon awakens.

And focusing so much on the blood: “there’s power in king’s blood”

    HYPEHYPEHYPEHYPEHYPE

That’s quite interesting, I obviously figured it was Shireen but it is a nice coincidence and obviously formally marks the end of the Wo5K

Goes into the theme of “new blood in the North”. Eg Yara/Euron are moving out of Balons shadow, Ramsay out of Rooses shadow, Jon is moving out of Robbs shadow as a military General/Sansa as leader of House Stark (given I think the “gift” is Rickon and he’ll die),

As for Kings blood, if ToJ theory holds true, then when she was washing the blood off his body, that rag would have had KB on it, if she’d thrown that into the fire then that would have been magical

  379. Ice Spider: The traitors have to die I agree. How in the hell would he ever trust them again? But I highly doubt that he’s going to stick around at the wall very long to care. Its off to Winterfell to kill that bastard Ramsey!!

Part of me wants Thorne to survive and come to realize that Jon is Rheagar’s son, because back in the day Thorne was really the ultimate Targ loyalist to a fault…it would be interesting to see how he would react…

  380. Jon is back yay but when will we learn the cost? I’m really interested in that! Like Beric-at what price?
But-Mel’s way seemed a bit different than Thoros.
What a great episode! Loved Tyrion and the dragons!!

  381. Btw I may be in the minority here but I thought the Ramsay/Walda scene was way way way too dragged out. Like, way too long. We all knew it was happening and it was dumb how credulous she was about the thing for so long. I’m not sure what the purpose of the show giving Ramsay endless time to be psychotic is, but this was a few beats too long

  382. Flayed Potatoes:
I could barely contain myself when the Wildlings grabbed that fruitcake Olly! He looked like Joffrey having a fit.

I know I was screaming at the tv … kill that little bastard.. and then immediately felt horrible for saying such a thing about a fictional character. Idk why but this show just is so damn good at pulling you into it emotionally. Testimony to the show runners for their skill in finding the right actors to fit the characters. Im happy as a lark about right now.

  383. Did anyone notice Young Ned saying that line with the shield? It was the same one Jon said in season 5!! Right??

  384. Laura: There was literally no reason for Davos to plead with Mel to rez Jon.

There are lots of reasons for Davos to do this. Davos is a very astute individual, and he recognizes that Jon is a very capable and able leader who puts the big picture in front of the immediate picture. He’s seen that Jon is someone who will make the hard choices that might be immediately unpopular but that are what need to be done. In other words, he’s seen Jon do exactly what he (Davos) preached over and over again to Stannis. And given that Davos seems to accept (for whatever reasons) that the White Walkers are a real threat and thus demand that rare someone with these abilities, and given that nobody else at the Wall seems to be that person, it would be a obvious “hail of Mary” by Davos.

  385. Watchers of No Trailers:
    LatrineDiggerBrian,

    I think

    thats why she had reservations…

This was one of my top 3 favorite episodes ever.I’m thinking next week will be just as good if not better.

Don’t want to read your spoiler because I’m still trying to avoid spoilers. I understand why she had reservations, in season 3 she is shocked that Thoros is able to do what he does, and even says “you should not have that power”. But maybe since she saw it in the flames, she would think to give it a whirl instead of going off and throwing a pity party as her 400 year old self.

And why is Davos trusting her all of a sudden? What does he care about bringing back Jon, especially since the Wildlings have saved them?

  386. Mag:
Ghost and the dragons were so cute …. but I can’t forget Ramsay’s dogs … Of course, he was going to give the baby to the dogs … really awful, a mad dog indeed. I can’t wait to watch Ramsay die horribly. And that Karstark guy is Ramsay’s BFF. He didn’t look surprise at all … not big deal …
I’m so worried about Rickon and Osha … please, let it be something else … what kind of gift can it be???? Maybe they kidnapped an Umber????

Yeah it kind of bothers me that the Karstark’s who were loyal to the Starks and are a noble house are now ok with Ramsay’s lust for killing and psychotic behavior.
I’m not going to mention Manderleys and Umbers because I’ve read tbe books recently….

  387. ok.. now its time for comprehensive thoughts

Bran scenes=LOVE LOVE LOVE…hearing Young Ned give Young Benjen the same “keep your shield up” talk that Jon gave Olly was nice touch..finally SEEING Lyanna (even young version) was a “YEEESSS” moment..and want to know what made Wylas become Hodor?!!!?? and Leaf telling Meera that Bran wouldnt always been in the cave had me going “ooooohhhh….”

Meereen= this started out as a normal bit of something and by the end I was on the edge of my seat….hearing him talk to the Dragons..seeing them accept him was AMAZING…we have 2 of 3 dragon riders now it appears…any body catch if it was Rhagel or Viseryon that he unchained last? would love to know which one turned its neck for him

Ayra isnt getting a lot of screen time per episode but what little they are showing is really working for me.. am excited to see what happens with her this season..and that hasnt always been then case

Kings Landing scenes were some of the best we have seen from that storyline..Cersie/Tommen scene and Jamie/HighSparrow pre-rumble (you kow its coming) trash talk clicked on every level

North-they are gonna kill me with this story line this year…Theon telling Sansa he would have taken her all the way to The Wall, would have died making sure she was safe there with Jon (knowing Jon would have killed him on sight) had me in tears..I got to hand it to Alfie Allen..he has KILLED it this season..
Ramsey killing Roose was coming..we all knew it from moment Walda got preggers..but woooah did not expect it this early…and that kennel scene.. I just cant

Iron Islands-Damphair!!! Euron!! Balon Overboard!! Kingsmoot incoming.. cant wait!

The Wall…….I love that DAVOS wanted Mel to rez Jon..love that he already knows that they NEED Jon..and the rez scene…YES !! perfect!!! I did not want a cheesy kiss or Wannabe Dany fire scene…I love that we dont know EXACTLY why he is alive.. just that he is….(and Imma have to give a shout out to HBO for giving us Kit Harrington in nothing but a loincloth for 10 mins…the women of the world thank you for that)

  388. Poor Roose….you should have known to never hug a ‘bastard’. As soon as he hug him I knew he was gone.

  389. I am still 1000000% torn of if Sansa goes to Castle Black or not

On the one hand, I just think it’s too obvious, and Ramsay knows she’s going there.

On the other, there was a lot of talk of Jon still being a Stark by Roose. If Ramsay does in fact get Rickon, it’s possible he sends a message to Jon as LC to turn Sansa over. BUT Jon and many others think Rickon is dead, and would assume it was a trick. Really the only way for anyone to know it’s the real Rickon Stark is for Sansa to tell him or tell the North that Rickon is indeed alive. Only Ramsay, Theon, and Sansa know.

  390. Ice Spider: No..

Yeah I’ll be dissapointed if that’s the case. Tbh I think GRRM might be in two minds and he’s not sure whether to make Tyrion or Aegon a 3rd Dragon rider

But, looking at the scene and how the Dragons were quite calm around him etc I did get the vibe they were like that as they sensed he was a Targ

  391. Ice Spider,

Me thinking I was going to get to watch it at the hour realized it was a re-airing of The Red Woman, but I found where “Home” starts at the half hour.

I’m not ready to say it’s my favorite episode to date, but I am ready to say I’ve never been so excited for a rewatch.

  392. Jon fucking Snow!

    Euron fucking Greyjon!

    Max von fucking Sydow!

Great episode. The opening flashback and the Jaime-High Sparrow scenes were exceptional. Some of the dialogue in other parts felt like it needed a polish. Dave Hill is an OK writer, but nowhere near as good as D&D and Cogman. I’ll leave my full thoughts for the Recap, but overall I thoroughly enjoyed that, and am completely stoked for ToJ next week. Ramsay’s gift, on the other hand, I am dreading.

  393. Wimsey: There are lots of reasons for Davos to do this.Davos is a very astute individual, and he recognizes that Jon is a very capable and able leader who puts the big picture in front of the immediate picture. He’s seen that Jon is someone who will make the hard choices that might be immediately unpopular but that are what need to be done.In other words, he’s seen Jon do exactly what he (Davos) preached over and over again to Stannis. And given that Davos seems to accept (for whatever reasons) that the White Walkers are a real threat and thus demand that rare someone with these abilities, and given that nobody else at the Wall seems to be that person, it would be a obvious “hail of Mary” by Davos.

Please that’s not a good enough reason. In season 3 she spoke of his sons death, and he almost killed her. This was after convincing Stannis not to come to King’s Landing because he’d be winning the throne with “blood magic”. Then in season 5, he was wary of Shireen being sacrificed by her, so much that he asked Stannis if she could come back with him to Castle Black. Then when she comes back to Castle Black at the end of season 5, first thing he asks is “where is Shireen?”. So now he’s going to trust her to use blood magic to revive some guy he barely knows because he thinks he might be a good leader? I’m not buying it, sorry.

  394. I really don’t think Tyrion is a tang because the dragons were calm
He just told us how intelligent they were and they know who their enemies are
I really hope he’s not a targ – it would diminish his relationship with Tywin in my eyes

  395. But but but, are we sure it was the Melisandre and the Red God that brought Jon back? Afterall, it looked like she’d failed and it was after sunset. Perhaps it was both the Red God and The Great Other’s magic working on him.

  396. The biggest casualty of this episode was my favorite crackpot fan theory, Bolt-on. RIP.

  397. Ginevra: Jon Snow has to execute traitors of this magnitude.Better to have no men than men who will stab you in the back and sew discord and treason.Off with their heads.Edd, fetch me a motherfucking block. If Janos Slynt had to die, Thorne has to, too.And Bowen Marsh, Orthel Yarwyck, and Olly.

Yes, he will do what his father (uncle? heh!) would have done – behead the traitors.

  398. Ravyn:
Was anyone else as jazzed as me to see Lyanna, albeit a child version? I thought it was pretty amazing. I don’t know how casual fans would react, but that opening scene was a hardcore fan’s dream.

Yes, that’s the only time I paused to post in here, mid-show. I loved seeing her!!! I hope to see much more of her this season.

  399. I must say that I appreciated the bunch of book references that are very plain to see in the episode and the upcoming TOJ scene, making it quite clear that despite all the “white noise” surrounding the production, that this is still intended to be an ASOIAF adaptation, despite of what some people say.

  400. I’m sure I’m not the first to wonder about this, but might Jorah Mormont’s nasty dermatological problem be solved if he had his forearm lopped off?

  401. selena,

Best part of the resurrection was Kit in that loincloth!! Now I’m curious if he’s going out naked. I doubt Mel left some clothes behind lol.

  402. Ice Spider: we THINK that is all he wants and probably is all he wants but that in fact LIFE is going throw him a curve ball and he’s going to find out that he is indeed a Targ

The show has done nothing to set up this possibility. I know that many people do not feel that this is necessary, but just look at this episode. Many people imagined that warging would be important, even though the show never set that up. Many people imagined that the Old Gods would be important, even though the show never set that up. Instead, this episode saw the execution (figuratively and literally) of two big things that had been set up: R’hllor reviving someone and Ramsay offing Roose and his baby brother. This does not mean that everything that we can see the show setting up will come to pass: but the track record for conjectures that are not set up is pretty damn dismal.

Notably, this episode also hung a couple of guns on the Wall. One, Lyanna. Hmm, that could get fired soon. Two, Euron is bonkers. That could be fired before the season is done. Three, Theon is trying to head home: that could be fired soon. Four, and this is huge, Tyrion is damned good with dragons: expect that to get some major firing sometime soon. Oh, and dragons are now free: that’s gonna be more of a howitzer being fired soon. And… Tyrion likes to drink! Have they ever shown us that? That could be big….

  403. I have yet to watch the episode .

But looks like spoilers were true after all..
Can’t wait to see the whole episode .

This means am happy they brought jon back so we can move on and god I hope it may put an end to him being AAR theories ..and it happened not in a pyre …it looks like people are complaining about him coming back as cliche but wanting him coming out of pyre will not be one..

But looks like the episode has given way to another theory about tyrion being targ…I just think its there to showcase tyrions knowledge and nothing more and him getting them free ..

I guess we will be finding the answer at the end of the season anyways .

  404. CatspawAssassin:
Query: Might Jorah Mormont’s nasty dermatological problem be solved if he had his forearm lopped off?

According to Qyburn in the Histories and Lore video, it may or may not. Nobody knows.

  405. Also so glad that the idea that TOJ is episode 5 is debunked. TOJ next episode – HYPEEEEEEE – kind of figures into the idea of “oaths” really well.

Having said that, “promise me Ned” could actually come later? Could just be the fight Bran sees.

  406. Flayed Potatoes: Best part of the resurrection was Kit in that loincloth!! Now I’m curious if he’s going out naked. I doubt Mel left some clothes behind lol.

Those looked like medieval boxer shorts to me.

  407. John Snow/Stark/Targaryan ALIIIIIVVVEE!! GET HYPE!!
LOL HBO….jeez I bet you all feel silly now eh?
We knew all along, though I would have liked to see him burnt in the funeral fire and rise with Lightbringer.
Best moment ever when Ghost gets up and Jon opens his eyes I was jumping out of my seat like YEESSSSS!!
Tyrion definitely must have Targ blood in him, he touched that green Dragon like he owned him…..loved it!!

  408. Ginevra: Yes, that’s the only time I paused to post in here, mid-show.I loved seeing her!!!I hope to see much more of her this season.

I loved Lyanna on the horse, it’s almost my favorite part of the episode!

I also liked that she was told to “stop showing off” subtly implying that she’s a better rider than her brothers?

  409. Wimsey,

I also imagined Lyanna to be younger than Ned. I need to rewatch the scene because there was some noise in my environment and I missed a lot of what was said.

I also liked the understatement of Jons reasurection. However, following that thought through it would have been nice is he would have awoken like Bran, quietly, not gasping for breath.

Did anyone else think the caked on blood looked like devil’s food cake? Gross. Don’t think I’ll be eating any of that for a while.

  410. Flayed Potatoes:
    Ice Spider,

Lol I know. I’m glad he can see Jon alive though. I want to see him react to the news!

Him AND Thorne.. Im wondering since he came back kinda without anyone really seeing it personally if there is going to be a question of ‘was he resurrected’ or was he not really dead?

  411. Clara: The biggest casualty of this episode was my favorite crackpot fan theory, Bolt-on. RIP.

Tut, tut: he might arise in the middle of the night!

    😀

Also, the Euron = Daario craziness died it’s final death tonight. Rot in Pieces. Next: the Howland Reed is the High Sparrow wackiness!

  412. Loolaa: Tyrion definitely must have Targ blood in him, he touched that green Dragon like he owned him…..loved it!!

Pretty much all of the noble houses of Westeros would have Targaryen ancestors.

  413. Flayed Potatoes,

Thanks. It might be worth a try, though I doubt Jorah would go for it. That is unless Khaleesi ordered him to…

More grist for my fan fic. 😉

  414. Wimsey: Yeah, that was a very well-done episode.

Agreed. Although I must admit I thought Ghost would walk out of the room as well. 🙂

They definitely have mastered Occam’s Razor well on this show!

  415. Wimsey: Those looked like medieval boxer shorts to me.

Kit looked exactly like he was starring in a Jesus miniseries and he’d just been taken off the cross…not too subtle with the Christ visual metaphor, D&D

  416. Laura: Yeah, honestly, the resurrection part was my least favorite of the episode but I am just glad it’s done. And the rest of the episode was just so great that I’ll forgive it

I agree with both of you. And Davos has never heard anything about resurrections before. Why would he think of something that magical now. This intense caring for Jon is definitely coming out of left field for me whether he thinks Jon is a great leader or not.
And they spent SO much time showing his hatred and distrust for Mel, and essentially she was wrong about Stannis being Azor Ahai so why would he have so much faith in her and suddenly be ok with her power.
I'm also floored that after they spent so much time showing the bond between him and Shireen and nothing has been mentioned about Mel killing her (essentially for nothing) as well as Davos not asking about it and being affected by the answer.

  417. Wimsey: The show has done nothing to set up this possibility.I know that many people do not feel that this is necessary, but just look at this episode. Many people imagined that warging would be important, even though the show never set that up.Many people imagined that the Old Gods would be important, even though the show never set that up.Instead, this episode saw the execution (figuratively and literally) of two big things that had been set up: R’hllor reviving someone and Ramsay offing Roose and his baby brother. This does not mean that everything that we can see the show setting up will come to pass: but the track record for conjectures that are not set up is pretty damn dismal.

Notably, this episode also hung a couple of guns on the Wall. One, Lyanna.Hmm, that could get fired soon. Two, Euron is bonkers. That could be fired before the season is done.Three, Theon is trying to head home: that could be fired soon.Four, and this is huge, Tyrion is damned good with dragons: expect that to get some major firing sometime soon.Oh, and dragons are now free: that’s gonna be more of a howitzer being fired soon. And… Tyrion likes to drink!Have they ever shown us that? That could be big….

I was really just thinking out loud.. but either way Im going to love what happens.

  418. Ghosts Lunch,

It may not have been Balon who made this work. I get the felling Mel saw all kings die in her flames and put on a show for Stanis to get him on side again.

  419. I think the explanation for Hodor might be more supernatural. Like the word functions as a kind of spell, some sort of old magic in the First Man language. Something along those lines.

The mention of Manderly + the mention of the Glovers taking Deepwood Motte back really give me hope for the Grand Northern Conspiracy being true! Also I have hope that Ramsay or Walder will be served a very special pie.

  420. Sean C.:

I agree with you. To me, that was the disappointing/confusing part of this episode. I loved everything except that scene. I know Davos is a beloved character but his request to Mel seemed ‘out of nowhere’. It would have been better if Mel was looking despondently on the fire and realized something (maybe remembering what she said before, “… All I see is Snow.”). Oh well… I’m still happy Jon is back though!

  421. Demon Monkey: I also imagined Lyanna to be younger than Ned.

Well, maybe they were twins and she received those absurd tall genes that Sansa received. I guess that it was the old sexist “women marry older men” and thinking that Robert must be the same age as Ned, and thus Lyanna younger than either. However, in that world, a couple of years either side would not make a huge difference.

(And even if it is opposite of what it is in the books, then it is a magnificently irrelevant deviation from the book!)

  422. West of moon,

I kept my eyes covered when Walda and the baby appeared (peeked through my fingers the whole time though, lol). When I saw Ramsey next to that fire and asking to hold the baby I though baby back ribs were going to take on a whole new meaning. But then…

That is one part of the show that I had a problem with. The Maester comes out to say that Walda had a baby boy. It just happened, right? Then Ramsey kills Roose and goes outside – and there’s Walda, dressed and walking like nothing else happened, holding a baby. I don’t think she would have gotten up that fast for one thing. For another, she has to know what Ramsey is capable of, wouldn’t see stay far away from him? In fact I am surprised Roose didn’t have guards around her

  423. Wimsey: Pretty much all of the noble houses of Westeros would have Targaryen ancestors.

D&D wouldn’t have blown half the budget for the episode on that scene unless they were introducing a larger story point that they are setting up for later…you know, hanging one of your famous “guns”

  424. Another Bran thought…the CoF told Meera that Bran would not stay in the cave forever. I was glad to hear it. A good sign that he’s not going to turn into the next tree man.

  425. George: Kit looked exactly like he was starring in a Jesus miniseries and he’d just been taken off the cross…not too subtle with the Christ visual metaphor, D&D

Did you also notice the THREE temptations to Arya? She was tempted with food, forget the second one and then her sight .. but it was def THREE temptations … I did not miss that correlation to Jesus as well. Wondered how many others picked that up if any.

  426. George: Kit looked exactly like he was starring in a Jesus miniseries and he’d just been taken off the cross…not too subtle with the Christ visual metaphor, D&D

Probably less than Batman vs. Superman on the Jesus business. And hell, I don’t think it’s even been 3 days yet. Just saying.

  427. Sam: I agree with you.

    I agree with this, too.

I also feel that we haven’t really seen Davos react to Shireen’s death (although it’s understandable that he won’t have wanted to freak out at Melisandre if he was planning to get her to resurrect Jon). I’d have preferred to see Mel threatened with death by Davos for her involvement in Shireen and Stannis’ deaths, and then ‘redeem’ herself by resurrecting Jon…

  428. Knight of the Walkers:
    Jon fucking Snow!

    Euron fucking Greyjon!

    Max von fucking Sydow!

Great episode. The opening flashback and the Jaime-High Sparrow scenes were exceptional. Some of the dialogue in other parts felt like it needed a polish. Dave Hill is an OK writer, but nowhere near as good as D&D and Cogman. I’ll leave my full thoughts for the Recap, but overall I thoroughly enjoyed that, and am completely stoked for ToJ next week. Ramsay’s gift, on the other hand,I am dreading.

I completely and totally agree with you about tne dialogue! Thank you for putting that out there!

  429. Geralt of Rivia:
    George,
Maybe not horrible. But this way it turns into cliche three headed dragon with Daeny, Jon and Tyrion. Three main characters, two bastards (if Rhaegar did not married Lyanna) and one legitimate Targaryen.

No. One trueborn who thought he was a bastard, one Bastard who thought he was a trueborn, and one trueborn who always knew she was a trueborn. They’re all different cases, family each of them never knew they had.

    Targ Triumverate FTW.

But if you don’t like it there’s always the other theory – that Jon will join with the WW and fight against Dany + Tyrion.

  430. weirwoodtreehugger:
The mention of Manderly + the mention of the Glovers taking Deepwood Motte back really give me hope for the Grand Northern Conspiracy being true! Also I have hope that Ramsay or Walder will be served a very special pie.

If anything, then it suggests the opposite. Ramsay seems awfully confident about working out something with those two families.

SciFiFantasyGirl: This intense caring for Jon is definitely coming out of left field for me whether he thinks Jon is a great leader or not. And they spent SO much time showing his hatred and distrust for Mel, and essentially she was wrong about Stannis being Azor Ahai so why would he have so much faith in her and suddenly be ok with her power.

There actually were some good interactions between Jon and Davos last season. But as for why Davos would do this, I felt that they did a good job of showing that he was doing it out of desperation. After all, he didn’t know about resurrection: he asked if there was anything that her magic could do to fix it. As he recites, he has seen her magic do amazing things: and although he does not like the “why” of her magic, he is not pretending that it does not exist.

As the old saying goes, nothing ventured, nothing gained: so Davos ventured, and in the end, he gained.

One thing that I do think will wind up being important from this is Davos’ conversation with Jon last year about the interpretation of the Night’s Watch vows: and where people like Ramsay fall in those vows.

  431. Dee:
I really don’t think Tyrion is a tang because the dragons were calm
He just told us how intelligent they were and they know who their enemies are
I really hope he’s not a targ – it would diminish his relationship with Tywin in my eyes

Yup, same here. I don’t want him to be a Targaryen it would be cheap and also there’s no possible way of knowing. Damn there’s barely a chance to know if Jon is one with Tyrion I don’t see it happening at all. Also Tyrion wore his plot armor with pride tonight, didn’t like it one bit.

  432. So its already started people calling that it is different from books and only George can come up with something like that.

And connecting two kings who died elsewhere far away and not related in anyway is being connected to Jon ..

LOl its fun to read speculations.

  433. Hodors Bastard: Agreed. Although I must admit I thought Ghost would walk out of the room as well.

If he had been a cat, then he would have started munching on Jon!

Seriously, I did like how Ghost clued in right before Jon woke up. OK, dogs’ senses are a lot sharper than ours: but it still looked like that “bond” between boy and wolf akin to the bond we’ve seen between girl and dragon.

  434. Quiddity131,

nah it was pretty obvious what was going to happen. like every other time a major character has died, it was by episode 9 so that everyone could react to it and you’d have a bit of aftermath. ending cold on jon’s death, without bothering to show any kinds of ramifications or mourning at all, made it WAY obvious that this was unfinished business and he was going to come back.

i was expecting a bit more from his resurrection too. i hope D&D have some legitimate changes for his character arc or something because otherwise this is starting to feel like a cheap way to keep fans invested between seasons. like if this is all it took to bring him back, they should totally have picked up the pace a little in the middle of season 5 and done this resurrection scene as the finale. it would’ve been a great callback to the miracle of daenerys and her dragons in season 1.

i love tyrion, but the writing for him this season kind of creaks. first “punch me in the face,” and we’re really supposed to buy that missandei, grey worm, and varys are surprised by his captain obvious reveal that dragons don’t like being locked up? come on D&D you’re better than this

my favorite scenes were the flashback with bran and the cersei/jaime/tommen scenes. lena headey knocks it out of the park every time

  435. Not Today: I agree with this, too.

I don’t think Davos actually knows about Shireen’s death yet does he? Waiting for that shoe to drop

  436. Of course there were big moments in this episode, but what really struck me were the small ones, Sansa and Brienne, Cersei unraveling her sleeve foreshadowing her actual meltdown, Jaime making peace between Cersei and Tommen before correctly assessing the situation with the High Sparrow.

The scene with Walda was more terrifying than any horror film I’ve seen in years. The tension made me want to scream at my television, cover my eyes, run, hide.

Alfie Allen is so beautifully broken.

My least favorite part of the episode was Yara, the exposition fairy. The only weak spot in an otherwise stellar episode.

  437. There were a lot of ways they could have done Jon’s resurrection, but at the end of the day, there was one and only one way they had foreshadowed it – by a Red Priest saying some words over a dead companion at a low point in their faith. And that’s just what they decided to do. It made sense.

I think all those who are saying that the dragon scene emphasizes Tyrion Targaryen are missing the part where they went out of their way to illustrate: “And YOU Missandei, random person and certainly not a Targaryen, have the dragons harmed YOU when you’ve approached them? No? Excellent. Now we can proceed without making this a crackpot theory.”

    Great episode.

  438. Roose, how do you not have HBO yet?

    Davos

to skagos (or last hearth) to get Rickon would not have hurt Jon’s revival imo. Maybe Davos will still save Rickon (although I’d prefer SD or big nym).
  439. ash,

Well he told Ramsay she was resting and then Ramsay basically said get her to me
So the maester probably told her roose needs her ASAP –

  440. Jack Bauer 24:
So what is Jon going to wear now? His armor is all cut up.

The shiniest plot armor the North has ever seen <3

    Realistically, some furs.

  441. The Davos and Mel confrontation over Shireen is still coming. It really didn’t have a chance to happen yet since Jon died almost immediately after Mel came back to the wall. I mean, in real time has it even been 24 hours? We know from interviews with Liam Cunningham that Davos is going to find what truly happened to Shireen and he is going to be pissed. It’s episode 2. Let that drama build.

As far as Davos wanting Mel to resurrect Jon, it is a little puzzling at first glance. Davos did know that Stannis intended to legitimize Jon and that he thought highly of him, and we know that Davos always just wants to do the right thing. There is a little leap one would have to make to accept that Davos asking Mel for help is “doing the right thing,” but it is true that Davos has seen Mel do miracles. And even if they have actively disliked each other, they did for a bond around Stannis. In his mind, remember he knows know what she did to Shireen, they share a grief together over losing Stannis and Shireen. Davos may not believe in the Lord of Light, but he does believe in Mel. And perhaps he thinks at this point, asking the woman that does miracles to perform a miracle is the right thing to do in this desperate situation.

But I do agree with those that think this wasn’t strongly justified. It requires some motivation that wasn’t explicitly shown on the screen.

  442. Not Today,

Davos does not know that Mel burned Shireen. He only knows whatever Mel told him about what happened to Stannis and the rest.

  443. So, onto the next big question. Jon is officially free of his vows? His watch had ended with his death…right? I’m interested in seeing that come into play. If so, who will be the new Commander, etc.

  444. Like wimsey said a lots of theories are put to rest in this episode ..

But still there is one Howland reed is high sparrow and daarrio is benjen theories …which will also be put to rest this season .

Glad we get lyanna riding horse .

Hope we get full TOJ next episode now Jon is back and not split them up..
And surprised they are keeping now it begins line from the books..

  445. SciFiFantasyGirl,

I’m also floored that after they spent so much time showing the bond between him and Shireen and nothing has been mentioned about Mel killing her (essentially for nothing) as well as Davos not asking about it and being affected by the answer.

Well remember last episode, he tells the others in the room something like ‘you haven’t seen what I’ve seen her do’. So he knows she has magic capabilities, plus he knows they need Jon and that was the only hope. However, there is no mention of Shireen – I was expecting Davos to be furious on hearing about it, and wanting to kill Mel. So yeah, I have some questions as well.

  446. Flayed Potatoes: The shiniest plot armor the North has ever seen <3

    Realistically, some furs.

Who do you think Tormund was talking to when he says “they think you’re a God” in the “Oathbreaker” preview? Mel or Jon?

  447. Redxgod:
So Old Nan was Hodor’s mother? There is a story to tell about how Willis became Hodor and it might involve Lyanna…..

Great-grandmother. She was really freaking old.

  448. Ryan E:
    Not Today,

Davos does not know that Mel burned Shireen. He only knows whatever Mel told him about what happened to Stannis and the rest.

I know she hasn’t out and out told him but there was this look between them in S5E10 and I wondered if he just knows…

  449. LOL for the magic resuscitating shave & a haircut (two pence!)

Kit’s curls are a sacrifice most pleasing to Rh’llor !

  450. dragonbringer:
Like wimsey said a lots of theories are put to rest in this episode ..

But still there is one Howland reed is high sparrow and daarrio is benjen theories …which will also be put to rest this season .

Doubt it. Seems like Bran’s visions will be short for a bit.

  451. Jack Bauer 24,

I’m going to guess it’s Jon, since everyone will be floored he is back based on the preview. And maybe we’re getting Tormund’s line from the trailer (“I thought he [Mance] was the man to lead us through the long night, but I was wrong.”) Wild guess, I know lol.

  452. CatspawAssassin:
I’m sure I’m not the first to wonder about this, but might Jorah Mormont’s nasty dermatological problem be solved if he had his forearm lopped off?

Sure, and then he could either have died in the pits due to being a one-armed fighter, or get to explain why he randomly decided he didn’t need that arm anyway. Of course, then when a patch appeared on his leg, we’d end up with a Black Knight scenario from Monty Python.

  453. ash,

Why would he want to kill her after resurrecting Jon. It makes no sense at all. What happened happened. An accident. There is no need for him to kill her.

  454. Sam,

I also thought the begging for help from Davos seemed out of place.

Also, why was he so invested in trying to save Jon if possible anyway… Nothing better to do with stannis dead I guess?

  455. Wimsey: Osha asserts that Hodor must have giants blood in the first series/book.She seemed to be serious, but back then we were still under the impression that Giants were either mythical or extinct.

I remember that very well, yes. And every time the book describes Hodor, which I think is three times in the beginning of AGoT, they use some form of the word giant. That cannot be coincidence. Tonight was really just further confirmation, IMO, but not all subscribe to the theory.

  456. Wimsey: Tut, tut: he might arise in the middle of the night!

    ?

Also, the Euron = Daario craziness died it’s final death tonight.Rot in Pieces.Next: the Howland Reed is the High Sparrow wackiness!

Cheers to all these dead and dying theories! Fun stuff

Also, you mentioned the show having done nothing to setup Tyrion the Targaryan. The show did tell us way back in season one that he likes his bacon black!

  457. Just read a review from The NYTimes A few lines were just, um, priceless:

Ramsay Bolton attained new levels of treachery, killing first his father and then his stepmother and infant half brother. He accomplished the latter, the latest almost unbelievably cruel moment in a show that’s had plenty of them, by letting loose his dogs, who were clearly unsated by the Myranda Value Meal they got last week.

That’s a meme that deserves getting spread a bit 🙂

  458. Sister Kisser:
    Jason,

A head injury would also be something known around WF, and he would have a visable scar. You are probably right, must be some emotional/psychological trauma.Perhaps something involving the crypts?Supernatural would be cool.Spiders big as hounds! We shall see…..

    Stoked

I know lots of soldiers with TBIs, and most don’t have visible scars. Of course, most can still talk, too, but they may not have had the language portion of the brain affected.

  459. rhymeswithweak,

Why people ask this question? Isn’t it obvious? He knows Mel has magical powers. Stannis saw sth in Jon, Davos saw sth in him and now afters Stannis is not there he can see the bigger picture and that Jon can be a king that Westeros deserves. He has a witch next to him and he tries to see if she could sth… Why is this so strange?

  460. I admit to being a bit disappointed in the Episode. 3 trailer. ‘Ned’s response lacks a kind of gravitas I was expecting. So does his face. I look forward to being proven wrong.

  461. Jerry,

I don’t think Davos actually knows about Shireen’s death yet does he? Waiting for that shoe to drop

Mel basically told him when she rode in on horseback, and Davos asked her, she just shook her head, The look on his face said that he knew. Now, he might not realize how she died, or what part Mel had in that death, which would explain why he hasn’t killed her yet…

    Wimsey
,I always smile when I see you talking about the guns hanging on the wall. Im a huge Chekov fan 🙂

  462. Ok some of my realtime reactions were

“We have Manderleys Umbers and Karstarks…” YOU FORGOT MORMONT BITCH! 8-year old Lyanna Mormont is gonna fuck you up!!!

Tyrion PLEASE DON’T DIE (if you don’t die you are definitely riding one of those).

A man??? You mean the bloody Hound? And that was sweet but WTF is Theon planning to do at Pike????

OH SHIT ROOSE – I was 50-50 that either of them would kill the other but since Ramsey is more hateable that’s who we got to keep. I hid behind my blanket for Walda.

Jaimeeeeeeee grab Tommen and RUN. You both know Cersei is awful. You both know that the high sparrow is going to take you all down. RUN WHILE YOU CAN!

Ok that didnt’ work. I guess they will do the pyre next episode. OH FUCKKKK GHOST MOVED AAHHHHHHHHHH JONSNOWLIVES!

  463. Hair magic > blood magic. Those curls are so special they can bring back from the dead.

  464. Wimsey,

Good catch on Lyanna. She did look older than Ned in that scene…however she is definitely younger than Ned in the books.

  465. Wimsey: Yeah, that was a very well-done episode.I really like how Roose’s death mirrored Robb’s death.

But I really like Jon’s return.I had feared that it would be a pyrotechnic spectacular, and although that could have been great, it would have been too easy to have it go wrong. But this was really good: understated, subtle, and very much harkening back to Bran’s reawakening at the end of Episode 2.(I did like how Ghost sensed it right before Jon woke up.)And: no warging, no Old Gods, nothing but the firing of a gun that they hung on the Wall 3 years ago.

Well Wimsey, you got that one wrong, eh! All that crap about ‘Chekhovian hanging guns’ and that comment Weiss made to Harington at that Oxford Union meeting was just play acting. He was telling the truth… i.e. Harington’s comment, “I would like to put myself into a wolf” and Weiss’s reply – “Two words for you – SEASON SIX”

I agree it wasn’t ‘warging’ as such, but its pretty obvious that after Melisandre did what she could and then she, Davos and the others left the room, Ghost howled, Jon took a breath and then came back to life. His soul, spirit, life energy or whatever one wishes to call it was transferred from Ghost back into Jon.

Whether some of the spells that Melisandre chanted, putting clippings of his hair into the flames started the resurrection process I cannot say, but Ghost played the major role of bringing Jon back… Its as simple as that and I rest my case !!

  466. Kind of upset Roose died so easily. He is too smart to be that short sighted. Feel the same way about Balon but that one I can stomach a little more

  467. He’s known Jon for about five minutes…he hates Mel…doesn’t like her magic.

…feels out of character for Davos.

I think a despondent Mel who saw Jon in her flames might have prayed over Jon on her own.

…and now, finally, the most obvious outcome for Jon has happened…as if Kit and HBO spoiled their own cliff hanger by telling us what happened…like that was going to be the truth.

Saying Jon is dead = okay…saying Jon is alive = Snipers watching…lol

  468. Some more disjointed thoughts,

Whoever it was that thinks UnGregor might be the one to kill Tommen, I’m inclined to agree. There are some very clear parallels between Cersei and Macbeth. She’s like a combo of Macbeth and Lady Macbeth. I’m quite sure that she’ll be responsible for the death of Tommen in some way. The harder she tries to fight Maggy’s prophecy, the more likely it’ll come true. Since she’s the one who gave Qyburn the freedom to do all the creepy shit necessary to raise Gregor, him killing Tommen would make sense.

The dragon that bared his neck for Tyrion was Viserion. So, Tyrion rides him, Dany rides Drogon and Jon rides Rhaegal? That seems appropriate.

Who is the acting Lord Commander now? Is it Jon? I like to think that for one brief, shining moment it will be Edd.

I hope Bex is okay. I know she’s a big Fat Walda fan. Also, I’m looking forward to Oz’s recap. Damn. I really want to call in sick tomorrow so I can nerd out to GoT all day. But I’ll be good.

  469. Re-watching and just noticed that Ramsey wiped his bloody knife OVER a letter his Father had on the table…. is this why we have the PINK letter? Preclude to it perhaps?

  470. rhymeswithweak,

For 5 minutes? WTF! He spent weeks at CB. You confuse the real tv time with what this time represents and you come here and tell stories… Shake your head…

  471. Pigeon,

I’m hoping this is the result of the edit for the trailer. His line seemed rushed, but then again, for the last several years I’ve been imagining Sean Bean saying it

Re: Grayscale. It’s just a flesh wound 🙂

  472. What a stellar episode !!!!
    Favourite moments :
    – Tyrion’s moment with the dragons
    – Jaime and the High Sparrow’s
    – Euron’s brief entrance and Yara’s return

    – And of course the final scene. Top notch. I liked very much how it was handed!

  473. ash,

Yes ok! He can be angry about it, furious, out of himself but kill Mel I don’t see it…

  474. rhymeswithweak,

Maybe it would have been better if Edd had been the one to plead with Mel? He is Jon’s last friend and he was present in Hardhome too, so he would know how badly the NW needs Jon.

  475. I wonder if Sam/Gilly and LF will be in “Oathbreaker”? It’s time we catch up with them. So the shot in the trailer with the storm and ship wasn’t Euron it is Sam/Gilly.

  476. NinaD,

    RE: Hodor:

I think, with the focus as it was about him not learning to fight, and young Ned’s comment about getting your “bell rung,” he tries fighting and one of the Stark kids clobbers him hard.

  477. Ginevra:
Was anyone else surprised by all of the, “What is dead may never die” lines not being followed by, “but rises again, harder and stronger”?Balon even told Yara that she was supposed to repeat the line instead of replying to the line with the finishing part of the prayer. This is show canon, too.

Euron chided his brother for not saying the words back.

  478. Sister Kisser:
    Pigeon,

Re: Grayscale. It’s just a flesh wound

Yes, that’s a fair point, it could very well be set differently in the actual episode. Sigh. I do wish it could have somehow been ‘Beanie’. 😉

“Sure sure, run away!!” “Oh, what are you gonna do – bleed on me?!”

  479. weirwoodtreehugger:

I hope Bex is okay.I know she’s a big Fat Walda fan. Also, I’m looking forward to Oz’s recap.Damn.I really want to call in sick tomorrow so I can nerd out to GoT all day.But I’ll be good.

Dragons looked the same to me? Maybe it was the lighting?

  480. Brother Scott,

I never saw him as smart. A smooth calculator maybe who managed to change sides when the opportunity came to him. He had no other choice anyway. So smart not really especially after legitimizing Ramsay and then reminding him of Walda’s pregnancy although he knew what this threat could in Ramsays psycho mind. No Roose was not smart at all…

  481. weirwoodtreehugger:
    Some more disjointed thoughts,

Whoever it was that thinks UnGregor might be the one to kill Tommen, I’m inclined to agree. There are some very clear parallels between Cersei and Macbeth. She’s like a combo of Macbeth and Lady Macbeth.I’m quite sure that she’ll be responsible for the death of Tommen in some way.The harder she tries to fight Maggy’s prophecy, the more likely it’ll come true.Since she’s the one who gave Qyburn the freedom to do all the creepy shit necessary to raise Gregor, him killing Tommen would make sense

You know what you’re onto something…

Her death will be at the hands of the “Valonqar”, who knew the “little brother” was the “little brother of Joffrey” the whole time, she kills him *indirectly* and kills herself as a result of it.

Not sure if this will happen, but I do like this new meaning I came up with due to your idea, about who the “little brother” could be.

  482. HotPinkLipstick:
Of course there were big moments in this episode, but what really struck me were the small ones, Sansa and Brienne, Cersei unraveling her sleeve foreshadowing her actual meltdown, Jaime making peace between Cersei and Tommen before correctly assessing the situation with the High Sparrow.

Wait. You liked the scene with Sansa? You know she’s a Stark, right? I need to save this for proof.

    Jack Bauer 24:
So what is Jon going to wear now? His armor is all cut up.

I’m afraid he’ll just have to run around nekkid all season. It will be cold with the winds of winter and all. But I reckon dead men feel no pain.

  483. just re-watching…. was the aeron damphair? or just some drowned god priest. kind of funny that davos mentions “7 gods, DROWNDED GODS, tree gods” before he said the lord of light

  484. CatspawAssassin,

I don’t remember if they called him by name, but I think it was a young Rodrik Cassel, complete with the mutton chops (loved that)!

I watched an interview the other day and the guy who plays the older Rodrik is actually Podrick’s dad in real life! I love that. It was a Daniel Portman interview that I saw.

  485. Dee:
    ash,

Well he told Ramsay she was resting and then Ramsay basically said get her to me
So the maester probably told her roose needs her ASAP –

He told her Lord Bolton asked for her, and of course Walda assumed Roose not knowing there was a new Lord Bolton.

  486. Pigeon,

I’ve imagined that scene, and that line particularly, being more solemn. I dunno. We shall see how they play it

  487. To all the people wondering why Davos is so invested in trying to bring Jon back: I refer you to all the interviews that Liam Cunningham has been doing over the past few months, during which he repeatedly made the point that Davos feels purposeless without a strong leader to follow. He lost his raison d’etre when Stannis died and desperately needs to find someone else who can inspire his loyalty.

Yes, there could’ve been more scenes developing their relationship, but there could’ve been more scenes developing lots of things. HBO is doing the shorthand version of the story. Why complain about this particular bit being sketchy when so much of the onscreen version is sketchy as well? I for one find Davos’ actions more plausible than, say, the sudden, unexplained rise to power of the Sparrows without any scenes of the hordes of refugee smallfolk and displaced clerics on the roads during and after the war.

  488. Seeing Davos and Mel share moments the last two episodes have me convinced that things will boil over whenever he finds out about Shireen. The show has a habit of having characters share a touching moment before it all turns to crap. Davos might actually succeed in killing Mel this year.

  489. rhymeswithweak,

It’s been clearly established in S3 that Davos knows the WW are coming. And in S5 he knew that the Wildlings followed Jon, and was enough of an army to help in that war. Davos isn’t a leader. He’s a follower. He knew if there was a way for Mel to work her magic, it’d be beneficial in the fight ahead. This had nothing to do with them being buddies.

  490. They haven’t actually said Euron’s name yet. Bacon just referred to him as brother.

  491. Dee,

Woohoo…….. that was so worth the wait….. but I found Tyrian’s scenes by far the most interesting and thought provoking, and I so can’t wait for the TOJ next week. Like the casting of the young Eddard, and really want to see Sir Arthur Dayne… I have my theory’s about Dawn so looking forward to finding out if I’m right….
I’m surprised I’m even able to post this, as I’d guess the Internet has exploded after that episode…..

  492. Anyone notice in the TOJ preview… Only 2 kg and 6 of neds men? And in the second part… One of the kg is down leaving like 4 or 5 to face dayne?

  493. Not Today: I know she hasn’t out and out told him but there was this look between them in S5E10 and I wondered if he just knows…

He knows Shireen is dead. He doesn’t have any idea that Mel burned Shireen at the stake while her parents watched.

  494. I take it we’ll see Drogon next episode. Wonder when Rhaegal and Viserion will actually get out of the catacombs now that they are unchanged?

  495. Concerning euron

Ghost of high heart tells lem and tom it was a man without a face who met balon on the bridge. I think I want the show to let euron be euron. Cuz hes dope as is
  496. Laura,

Jon borrowed Stannis’ ships to go to Hardhome and retrieve the Wildings before the WW could get to them. Stannis and Davos had an idea of what was coming eventually, even though Stannis’ priority was marching on WF. So Davos did have a reason for Mel to give it a shot.

  497. Firannion,

I feel like the battle of the blackwater and the backlash from everyone thinking the royal heirs were bastards born of incest wass the pre-curser for the faith militant, but I get what you are saying not alot of set up. I feel like alot of the new seasons are gonna be alot of minimal set up to create major plot points but I hope they do it in a way thats not as disjointed as what theyve done so far this year

  498. dothrakian raven,

I just thought it could have been even better…I was in the moment…but then the begging/encouraging to Mel pulled me out out the moment.

I thought “this seems forced” instead of staying on the edge of my seat in suspense.

  499. I somehow find it funny that three houses are extinct now when it comes to their trueborn members: Baratheon, Martell and Bolton.

Apart from that: Melisandre being the one to finally cut a but of Kit’s hair amuses me too,

  500. Well the nap certainly worked, it’s 5am and I’m wide awake. LOVED that episode, this could well be my favourite series. If they carry on at this cracking pace it’s no wonder D&D think they won’t need that many more episodes to wrap it all up. New Karstark guy is already high on my hit list.

As for “a man” helping Arya FILMING SPOILERS FOLLOW

if Brienne said it was the Hound, Sansa would obviously ask what happened to him. B would have to admit leaving him for dead (or perhaps she just assumed he was but didn’t check, although if I were her I’d wanna make sure) which reminds the audience he might not be. Something Ian McShane seems to have confirmed.
  501. Wow!!! Ahhhh!!! YESSSS!!

After last week’s sort of ho-hum premiere, I think this might be my favorite episode ever.

I was utterly riveted the entire time. Loved the fake out at the end. I bought it.

    Only (small) nitpick:

Would prefer to feature 4-5 storylines with slightly more depth than shorter check ins on 8 (Bran, Jon Snow/Wall, Sansa, Ramsay, Kings Landing, Tyrion/dragons, Arya, Greyjoys).

But I digress. I loved the episode. Loved it.

  502. For those of you that have said that Roose should have been smarter than to be killed by Ramsay, note that Ramsay looked unarmed except for a dagger strapped on his back, similar to the one that Bronn uses, which I’m sure that Roose was unaware of. Also, since there was another person in the room, Roose probably figured he was safe in that situation.

  503. Found it interesting Brienne tells Sansa that her sister was “with a man” not… with the hound. I guess she assumes Sansa doesn’t know him?

Davos walks in and apologizes for interrupting.
Melisandre: “You interrupt nothing”, as she’s gazing into the flames. She has really lost all faith.

  504. kit_hepburn: I think all those who are saying that the dragon scene emphasizes Tyrion Targaryen are missing the part where they went out of their way to illustrate:

Good point! So, this episode was brutal on fan conjectures!
    1) Euron ≠ Daario;
    2) No warging or Old Gods in resurrections;
    3) Targaryen blood is not necessary for bonding with dragons;
    4) Roose ≠ Vampire.

Black Raven: Ghost howled, Jon took a breath and then came back to life. His soul, spirit, life energy or whatever one wishes to call it was transferred from Ghost back into Jon.

No. Just, no. Benioff & Weiss talked about it after the episode: it was just the bond between them. If they had been shooting for that angle, then: 1) they would have set it up in earlier episodes; and, 2) they should have shown some transfer between the two. Ghost would have been up in Jon’s face or doing something. (He did not howl, by the way, even if you imagined it.) Instead, it was just a canid waking up suddenly because something in the room had changed. Heck, a real dog would have sensed that, never mind one with a special bond.

So, don’t try to change it into “warging was involved”: if you were in that camp, then you got it wrong.

ghost of winterfell: Maybe it would have been better if Edd had been the one to plead with Mel?

Edd has no idea what Melissandre can do. There is no reason why he would think that this is even possible. But Davos has witnessed her doing (or guiding) miracles. Moreover (and as others have noted), Davos probably has yet to learn that Melisandre burned Shireen. Right now, we are seeing Davos and Mel form an alliance given that they have a common goal. One very Thrones thing to do is to setup bonds, and then test them sorely.

  505. Flayed Potatoes:
So…who is getting the beautiful death poster?

I would want to draw Pyke and the bridge, so much more visually stunning than the other deaths. I hope it isn’t Walda.

  506. Sam,

I had a problem with that too, it was just like having HBO home and waking up to find that it’s only because you’re hacking cable tv. Minor detail that triggered a major twist, I would like it better if it wasn’t so rushed and a so strangely pertinent contrivance.

Anyway, I was here thinking, what could happen to Alliser now? Does he really have to die? Despite he was a dickhead he has some determination, fighting and leadership skills that could be of good use in the wars to come, once he redeems himself of course by having his ass kicked in a row by wildlings and crows alike.
It just happens that I like the actor that plays him and this show is killing the good actors with not even a little drop of mercy!

  507. Looking at the flashback scene has convinced me that we need a spinoff of Young Starks and Robert’s Rebellion. What a magnificent world George has built!

  508. Mustafa. S.: You know what you’re onto something…

Not sure if this will happen, but I do like this new meaning I came up with due to your idea, about who the “little brother” could be.

I’ve alway had a feeling that since Cersei has always been so obsessed with thinking Tyrion was her biggest threat, that it’s actually the next generation little brother Tommen who ends up killing her. It’s one of my gut feelings. And then maybe Strong kills him?

  509. Jack Bauer 24: Wonder when Rhaegal and Viserion will actually get out of the catacombs now that they are unchanged?

I assumed fairly shortly. They went off, presumably in the direction of the doors big enough for them to get out. After all, Tyrion & Varys came in human-sized doors, not the big ones that Daeny used to let them into the place.

I do find it interesting that dragons might be as smart as some men. Of course, there are a lot of really dumb men in the world: but even Cersei-level intelligence could be dangerous in a dragon’s body!

  510. My biggest complaint would have to be how Lyanna is obviously a few years older than Ned (sure girls in general enters puberty earlier than boys but not to that degree)
Other than that I REALLy enjoyed the episode.

    Anyone else noticed the same?

  511. Love the dragons being chill with Tyrion…although I thought he’d bring Missandei to bridge their trust.

  512. Jon/Mel/Davos. Why did Davos care? If you recall, Davos had just been taught to read, he had just sent Gendry off to freedom paddling off to King’s Landing, and he was brought before Stannis so Stannis could sentence him to die for treason. Then, Davos revealed what he had read: White Walkers were on the move north of the wall, and the great battle that would dwarf the War of Five Kings, Robert’s Rebellion, the Targaryan Conquest, and every other battle for the last several thousand years was about to start, and Stannis needed to be there to win one for humanity. Now Stannis is gone, and Jon, the one person he thought could win the battle, was lying dead on a slab. Do you think that Davos, who saved Stannis during Robert’s Rebellion but then submitted to having Stannis cut his fingers off for smuggling because honor demanded it, Davos who freed Gendry but submitted to Stannis for sentencing because honor demanded it, do you think that that Davos is too proud to beg the Red Woman, whom he despises, to resurrect Jon so that he might save humanity? I think that Davos had ample reason to go to Mel with his request.

  513. Laura,

Honestly, If you remember Davos’ interaction with Jon last season, He tells Jon that “He (Stannis) see something in you,it might not be apparent from his tone, but it’s the truth, he believes in ya” If we know anything about Davos is that he is 110% loyal to Stannis and his ideals, even in death. This is Davos’ way of remaining loyal to Stannis until the end. I don’t think this scene comes out of nowhere, when risks his life to protect Jon’s body. It is a move of true loyalty and belief in his friend. (Which also happens to be something of a Stark characteristic)

  514. Agro: Anyway, I was here thinking, what could happen to Alliser now? Does he really have to die?

I would not be surprised if Jon shows mercy on the grounds that the Watch needs every man for the fight to come. In a way, it would just rub it into Alliser’s face why Jon did what he did with the Wildlings: no matter what their personal grudges are, the Walkers are such a big threat that those have to go on hold.

Oh, but Alliser does get double guard duty and dibs on digging the next three latrines.

  515. I really liked most of this episode, but was underwhelmed by our introduction to Euron. Admittedly, I’m not a huge fan of the whole Ironborn plotline in the books either (I really only like Asha and the Reader). But that speech just doesn’t work for me, on page or screen.

I find it rather baffling that people keep mentioning ‘Men call me Darkstar, and I am of the night’ as one of GRRM’s cheesiest lines (it actually makes considerably more sense in context, where it’s a flippant reply to something somebody else says), but meanwhile they think that Euron’s boasting about being ‘the first storm and the last’ is some sort of awesome badassery. To me it’s just as lame, if not more so. Strutting braggarts just don’t impress me much, I guess.

  516. I loved, loved, loved this episode. It’s so much better when they calm down, let scenes breathe and don’t jump all over the place. I could hardly watch the scene with Walda. (Just die, Ramsay, DIE) and my heart was in my mouth when Tyrion unchained the dragons. And seeing young Lyanna! Too much to process …

I will say that I was impressed by Isaac in this episode. I was concerned that he wasn’t as strong as Maisie and Sophie but he has risen to the challenge. Taking him out for a year has actually worked well.

Now off to watch again …

  517. ghost of winterfell:
    rhymeswithweak,

Maybe it would have been better if Edd had been the one to plead with Mel? He is Jon’s last friend and he was present in Hardhome too, so he would know how badly the NW needs Jon.

Does Edd know that there was a resurrection or that its even possible? I have only gotten to book three so not sure if that was discussed in books or not? And I don’t think it has been discussed at the Wall in the show.. Im sure someone knows the answer to those q’s.

  518. Wimsey,

If anything, then it suggests the opposite. Ramsay seems awfully confident about working out something with those two families.

Wimsey: Ramsay has to be confident about the Manderlys. Otherwise it won’t work.

However he did only say that they need the Karatarks, Umbers (he did say Umbers, right? I didn’t hear Glovers) and the Manderlys. He didn’t say they had already signed on. But it doesn’t matter if they have.

I’m voting Frey pies and revenge. It will go the way of the book and they will pretend to support the Boltons and then turn on them. I am VERY worried for Rickon though. And I have not not do I want to hear about those spoilers we aren’t supposed to speak of. I will tell Sue.
  519. KG,

I just noticed on rewatch he has fresh cut where his scar is, so if he did take a “hodor inducing” hit to the head, that wasn’t the one

  520. I just had a thought, that may have been gone over already but is Jon’s blood the sacrifice for his own resurrection. As we have been told the blood of kings is stong and Jon has Stark and Targ blood so perhaps?

  521. Tower of Joy is gonna be the fucking shit based on the preview for next week… I’ll be kind of disappointed if they dont show Dawn. Its not like its gonna be hard special FX wise

  522. Is the faceless man going to fall for Arya’s lies again?

Does a girl want food. no.
Does a girl want shelter. no.
Does a girl want her eyes back. uh, um, well, no?

    You passed!

  523. The-Prince-That-Was-Promised-But-Didn’t-Get-Shit: My biggest complaint would have to be how Lyanna is obviously a few years older than Ned

Why is that a complaint? Lyanna’s age relative to Ned is never stated in the books, and it’s not important to the plot or to the story in any way. What is important is that she is his sister.

What also is important, and what they managed to show very well in just one scene, is that Lyanna just oozes charisma, willfullness and competence. This is not Sansa’s aunt: but it very much might be Arya’s aunt.

  524. rhymeswithweak,

I don’t know what show you’re watching, but he didn’t ask her to leech some poor kid this time. He’s asking if she can for once use her magic to help someone.

  525. Oh. My. GODS!! I just watched it. I’m a bit drunk but the Tyrion/dragon scene made me weep a little. It could have been the wine but I definitely found that scene to be incredibly touching and Dinklage absolutely nailed it. I’ve been waiting for that interaction!!

Balon and Roose biting it felt very satisfying as well. I’ll miss Michael McElhatton’s voice very much. Aw, but poor poor Fat Walda… uhg, her last scene was so sad. Ramsay you cunt. I hope Sansa’s army tears him apart. But hey I think I’m actually going to like show Euron! Though I hope Yara triumphs in the kingsmoot.

The Jon rez scene was great too. Mel and her chanting had me on edge. I have to watch it again… like right now.

I forgot to mention young Hodor!!! So happy they put that in there. I was smiling from ear to ear.

  526. Demon Monkey: However he did only say that they need the Karatarks, Umbers (he did say Umbers, right? I didn’t hear Glovers) and the Manderlys. He didn’t say they had already signed on. But it doesn’t matter if they have.

No, he didn’t: but the tone of the conversation indicates that he has some reason to expect their support. I am curious to learn what that might be. The young Karstark did not flinch when Ramsay offed Roose: and that suggests that Ramsay has been conspiring already.

  527. “I wasn’t drowning. I was home.” Immediately, Bran re-establishes himself as one of the emotional centers of the show.

  528. Freaking amazing episode.

In terms of casting, btw, Michael Faest is playing Aeron Greyjoy. Kae Alexander takes over as Leaf.

  529. Wimsey,

I disagree. She is Aryas aunt but also Sansas. She is pretty like Sansa and Sansa may not meet your definition of charismatic, but she makes ppl like her. Which is basically what charismatic means. Arya never did much of that. She is one of my top 2, don’t get me wrong, but within the world she lives in, she isn’t exactly charismatic.

But now we are arguing over silly shit. Apologies.

Point is we don’t really know her. And I think that we shouldn’t judge her yet. And I think Sansa is in the up and we shall see her best qualities going forward.

  530. Ravyn,

That makes sense to you and me…but I feel like that’s not his character.

In the books he not involved at all…so maybe they could have had Mel more involved on her own…and maybe he just nudges her.

  531. Simon: As we have been told the blood of kings is stong and Jon has Stark and Targ blood so perhaps?

Mel never mentions this as being necessary or a possibility. There was some hair burning: but what seemed to be important is that it was Jon’s hair, not “royal” hair.

Again, Thoros revived Beric without sacrificing anyone. I suppose one could make the argument that the person dying is the sacrifice that is needed.

Oh! We can cross “Mel has to sacrifice Ghost/Edd/Olly/Random Red Shirt Star Trek Character #22 to revive Jon” off of the list, too.

  532. TY,

love it… I hope to see lord too fat to sit a horse, I believe there might have been a quick mention of the manderlys in season 2 but I could be horribly mistaken by the fact that I want to see them in the show so bad and I’m a bit fan of their plotline coming into Winds of Winter because they connect 2 great tinfoilish conspiracy theories, aka the GNC and the Gods Eye Conspiracy…. (The Manderlys style themselves as “Knight of the Green Hand”)

  533. Annette:
But but but, are we sure it was the Melisandre and the Red God that brought Jon back? Afterall, it looked like she’d failed and it was after sunset. Perhaps it was both the Red God and The Great Other’s magic working on him.

Yeah this is actually a fair point

On the one hand the magic can’t work through the war, including R’hlorr as well as other

That said there were still the Wights that tried to kill Joer Mormont

Some other thoughts, “the war is over”, Ramsay killing Roose as well as Euron killing Balon is part of that

Point being there is a new war beginning etc

  534. Wimsey:
There actually were some good interactions between Jon and Davos last season. But as for why Davos would do this, I felt that they did a good job of showing that he was doing it out of desperation. After all, he didn’t know about resurrection: he asked if there was anything that her magic could do to fix it.As he recites, he has seen her magic do amazing things: and although he does not like the “why” of her magic, he is not pretending that it does not exist.

As the old saying goes, nothing ventured, nothing gained: so Davos ventured, and in the end, he gained.

I don’t know, it’s still not convincing to me. That’s certainly ‘out of nowhere’ – that Davos will be the ‘initiator’ of Jon’s resurrection. Maybe if he was with Jon at Hardhome and he saw him defeat a WW – that might have made him abandon his lack of belief/faith in Mel’s gods’ powers and be desperate enough to ask Mel what he asked her. It would have been more plausible if Edd and Tormund begged him to ask Mel (since Davos told the other NWs that she had some magical powers). So, why would Davos think Jon can’t die now? What was his motivation? To him, he’s just a former LC, with whom he interacted several times. There was no emotional investment there – unlike what he had with Stannis.

  535. Wimsey,

I still believe that Davos will find out that Shireen was burned by picking the stag her carved for her out of the ashes. 🙁

  536. Demon Monkey: Point is we don’t really know her. And I think that we shouldn’t judge her yet.

The scene directly harkens back to the first episode where Arya upstages her brothers in the archery site. I suspect that visual allusion was deliberate.

And Arya most certainly is charismatic! It’s not making people like you: it’s making people follow you. And Arya shows she can do that throughout Seasons 2 and 3.

  537. Wimsey,

That is a very good point. I was shocked that he didn’t react and it only makes sense if 1) he is a sadist like Ramsay or 2) they are in cahoots and this was already in the works. Option 2 seems more likely.

I wonder what the motivation is there? Why would the Karstaks want to replace Roose w Ramsay? As far as I can see there’s no basis. But of course we know nothing.

  538. Man, they could have totally milked the audience for one more week by not showing Jon like that. Imagine after Ghost pulls his head up, the shot transitions to an outdoor high shot pulling away from Castle Black similar to episode 1 start in reverse. And then you hear the “Howl” faintly again just like the first opening. Cut to black and credits.

Not complaining but just thinking of other cool (to me, at least) options after the fact instead of the gasping awakening.

  539. Wimsey,

Damnit you are right about the definition. She makes Yarwick and the Hound like her and they want to protect her, but are they following her (since we are mincing words).

You’re probably right about her being more like Arya. However, they are not the same and on top of that Sansa will be working on her charisma this season (i.e. Getting ppl to follow her). So there is that.

I reacted because I thought it was a slight against Sansa. I used to hate her but now I have so much more sympathy for her and felt the need to defend.

  540. alwayswinter:
That episode was almost perfect (wish Roose hadn’t gone down so easily – he’s a far more entertaining villain than Ramsay imo). Other than that I found it hard to pick a favourite scene they were all so good!

I agree. In my opinion it would have been more plausible for Roose to suspect this and he should have had at least some precautions. Ramsay overpowering these precautions would have been much more satisfying. (for me at least)

  541. Sullied by Knight: I still believe that Davos will find out that Shireen was burned by picking the stag her carved for her out of the ashes.

That is a really good conjecture, and I will be surprised if you are not right. I think that the “thaw” between Davos and Mel now will be important then, because it will really test that thaw. I suspect that fragile alliances will be a very important aspect of this year’s story.

Huh, I wish that I had thought of that myself!

Sam: Maybe if he was with Jon at Hardhome and he saw him defeat a WW – that might have made him abandon his lack of belief/faith in Mel’s gods’ powers and be desperate enough to ask Mel what he asked her.

Why would Davos need to have gone to Hardhome? What is impressive about Jon is not that he defeated a White Walker, but that he risked life and limb to save enemies from a still-greater enemy. Davos knows that Jon did this, and that the Wildlings owe their lives to Jon because of this. Davos preaches the necessity of making hard choices: and he’s seen that Jon can do that. Davos is a smart and pragmatic man: given that he’s accepted the danger facing them, he has more than enough evidence to see that Jon is one of those rare people who could be very important right now.

  542. I’m a nurse on a neuroscience unit and Hodor is a classic case of expressive aphasia – I’ve had patients who spoke their one word over and over with all the inflection of regular conversation. And there needn’t be a scar – a blunt force trauma that caused a bleed or swelling under the surface of the skull could do that damage. Extra sad because the complete thoughts are there, but the words can’t get out. Totally believable that without intensive therapy he would never come back from something like that.

  543. I figured this would release Jon from his vows, but they never had the ceremony. They never said, “and now his watch has ended.” It seems like Thorne, Olly and just a couple others were the only ones really against Jon. It appears he could just step back into command and lead those 45 remaining NW however he wants. He could tell them we’re marching south with the Wildlings… anything really. The NW is basically non-existent at this point anyway.

  544. I think the gift is Rickon as well, unfortunately. It gives Jon +wildings a reason to attack Ramsey and aligns with the books (pink letter threatening to kill Rickon if JS doesn’t hand over Sansa)
  545. Firannion,

No. Nor is there a list of people who didn’t think Mel was going to resurrect him … or was going to try and then seemingly fail … or that Mel was not ancient … etc. etc. What I have observed is that most people pretend they never predicted that and go on to their next predictions still batting 100%.

  546. Simon,

In the books he gave him the last kiss … which involved breathing fire into him … it being only a prayer is what he did on the show and of course in the books Mel never knew he did this

  547. Demon Monkey,

I think you’re both sort of right. In my experience as a woman, some men fall in love with women like Arya. Some also fall in love with women like Sansa.

But many men seem to completely lose their shit over a woman who has the best qualities of both: grace and natural beauty like Sansa combined with the spirit, independence and humor of Arya. They forsake friends and family, spend fortunes, give up kingdoms…you get where I’m going with this.

From the brief snapshot we got of Lyanna today, I think she may very well grow up to be that kind of woman.

  548. Wimsey: But my real question is: did the Mountain crush the peasant for insulting Cersei, or violating public urination laws?!?!?

    ;-[)

  549. The-Prince-That-Was-Promised-But-Didn’t-Get-Shit,

I don’t think she looked older, just taller.
    http://i.onionstatic.com/avclub/5802/12/original/640.jpg

I know a few pre-teens and the girls tower over the boys. It’s quite comical sometimes, the height disparity. The boys don’t catch up and overtake until they’re into their teens.

I did, however, have a slight problem with the child of the forest (was it still Leaf?) because this season she didn’t look like a child at all. And she had some very odd makeup.

  550. Laura: There was literally no reason for Davos to plead with Mel to rez Jon. He knew him for a couple months maybe and it’s not like he was friendly enough with her to want to snap her out of her funk.

Hmmm, since one of the themes seems to be fathers rethinking their roles, like Jamie has been doing about Tommen, wouldn’t it make sense that Davos would have spent much tortured time rethinking what he might have done to protect his own son, or to protect Shireen, and vowing to himself that he’d never let a chance escape him again to do all he could for someone he thought much of?

Davos is a man who cares about people. That’s been shown many times. He is one who actually acts, where and when he can, to help when he thinks it’s the right thing to do. That’s why sweet Gendry is out there somewhere now, rowing or blacksmithing or some such. But alive because of Davos. Davos helping Jon doesn’t mystify me in the least, neither does Davos thinking of every possible way to achieve what he needs to achieve, whether that’s charming the Iron Bank or charming Mel. I would have been more mystified if he hadn’t done those things.

  551. BTW, the title was “Home Bound” as seen on Sky Atlantic – Not simply ‘”Home”. No idea if the titling was the same in the US?

The scenes at Winterfell were pretty gruesome with Ramsey killing his father and feeding Fat Walder and her new born son to the dogs, but rest of the scenes were EPIC! Wun Wun busting through the gate with the Wildlings and overpowering Thorne was pretty cool! You just don’t piss off a giant lol 🙂

I sorta guessed Tyrion would unchain the dragons and good to see he didn’t get toasted! A pity they’re still locked up the catacombs though. I loved his comment to Varys about doing that and that if he has any more similar mad ideas to punch him in the face!

Loved Sansa’s chat with Brienne saying she had met up with Arya but then unfortunately had lost her and didn’t know where she was heading! Also her embrace with Theon forgiving him before he departs back to the Iron Islands. Those scenes also were good also with Euron heaving his brother off the rope bridge and the Kingsmoot scene for Balon’s sea burial.

The best part was seeing Jon Snow coming to back to life through Ghost who IMHO was holding his spirit and perhaps helped with Mel’s chants and spells to resurrect him. Other may disagree with me (Wimsey, etal) but that’s how I saw it. It will be interesting to see what B&W have to say when they do their ‘Inside look’ into E2?

The bottom line being it was a GREAT episode from start to finish and if the followings episodes are of the same high calibre, it will be the best season yet 😉

  552. Ygritte,

If you don’t understand WHY you woudn’t live very much in Westeros honey.

    *looks at the name*

    Oh! That makes sense then.

  553. Jane Taylor,

Yes, I fear it’s Rickon, and he’s doomed. Osha too. If only the Umbers would hand over a fake Rickon! It’s not like Ramsay knows him.

  554. Aryamad,

Willis was great! I think we should stop Hodoring and start Willising.

I especially loved how in that short scene you see how bright he is. He has never fought w Benjin (or anyone) but he already knows his tells. And I loved seeing Rodrick and I can’t wait for next weeks flashback! Seeing young Ned on next on has me pumped!

However, I would have liked to have seen Brandon. I suppose there is still some chance of that?

  555. SO MUCH happened in that episode, I feel breathless!
Tyrion with the dragons!!!!! Poor guys had not been eating since Mom left. And then so at ease and pally with Tyrion not-Lannister! 😉
Jon Snow opening his eyes, in almost an anticlimactic manner!
Bran and Bloodraven! Young Starks at WF. Theon deciding to go “home”.
Horrible scene with Walda, baby and the hounds. Wonderful scene with Tommen and Cersei – this season I am finally feeling for Cersei.
The only little disappointment to me was Roose’s death – he seemed far more foolish than Doran was last episode and fully deserved death if he was that stupid. 😉

  556. Lyanna Forever,

I appreciate your insight, and the work you do. My mother is a nurse for over 50 years! 🙂 Ok now, back to my original theory that he took a hit to the dome, sparring with Benjen! We shall see…… would be interesting dynamic if it is Benjen in the trailer swinging the fireball, coming to their aid.

  557. Black Raven,

I think they’ve left the door to the catacombs open. For some reason the dragons went back to their lair for the time being.

  558. can’t help but begin think that maybe that there was twins born at toj. howland only other survivor. brandon “needs” her. i enjoy my crackpipe.

  559. Jane Taylor,

I like Winsey’s theory better. That Roose’s murder was already planned or that Ramsay and the Karstark have some sort of understanding.

But why should the Karstarks care if the Boltons hold Winterfell? I can accept that they don’t want the Starks, but since their house is an offshoot of the Starks, it makes more sense if they covet it for themselves. But I’m sure there is much more to be revealed about the northern lords and their plans.

  560. Sean C.,

I agee with you on Davos being the inspiration for Mel … as opposed to Mel being the instigator (which I believe she will be in the books as Davos is far, far away from the Wall .. I also believe that a death will occur to bring back Jon … and I wonder who that might be I have my thoughts… as she has no knowledge of Thoros’s ability but we’ll find that out sometime in the future). Perhaps there is a reason for this in what will then happen when Davos discovers more of what happened to Shireen …

  561. Ice Spider:
Re-watching and just noticed that Ramsey wiped his bloody knife OVER a letter his Father had on the table…. is this why we have the PINK letter? Preclude to it perhaps?

I think we’ll have a “show version” Pink Letter with Mance being replaced by Rickon and Fake Arya being replaced by Sansa.

  562. Btw did anyone think it was somewhat mind boggling that Tormund was in the room while Mel tried to resurrect Jon?

Ie the Tormund who watched while Mel/Lord of Light’s champion Stannis Baratheon tried to burn Mance alive???

Tormund, Wildling of the North, totally cool with hanging around at an attempted resurrection?

Makes me think that he’s 100000% going to die this season somehow. I think Jon will certainly lose people from his trusted circle.

  563. Wimsey,

For the show, yes, I never expected a sacrifice … as you said … the gun was very obvious … Mel meets Thoros is show only … Mel comes back to wall at just the right time is show only … I still expect a sacrifice in the books as Mel never knew what Thoros could do and the last discussion she has on the subject way back in ASOS was that death had to pay for life … and she is at the wall with two characters who are dead on the show and presumably have to die in the books … as we’ve been told they do by D&D … but we will only find out when TWOW is published

  564. Wimsey: I assumed fairly shortly. They went off, presumably in the direction of the doors big enough for them to get out. After all, Tyrion & Varys came in human-sized doors, not the big ones that Daeny used to let them into the place.

I do find it interesting that dragons might be as smart as some men.Of course, there are a lot of really dumb men in the world: but even Cersei-level intelligence could be dangerous in a dragon’s body!

I don’t recall another set of doors. I’m 95% sure the dragons came in via that same door at the top of the steps. But as I said above they left the door open for them to leave. So they can leave when they are ready.

  565. Wimsey: But my real question is: did the Mountain crush the peasant for insulting Cersei, or violating public urination laws?!?!? That is a vital question about which I am sure that the viewers are wondering, and which I hope gets further explanation in the future.

My thought is that it’s definitely because of Cersei. That dude was so graphic, his story so polished, as though he’s been telling it many times. The word would have gotten around about him. The scene immediately after the head smash is Cersei pulling a loose thread from her sleeve. The Mountain comes in, she looks at him pointedly and tosses the thread away. Bit of symbolism perhaps? The next thread to be tossed? Septa Unella would be my guess. She’s on the shit list of both Margaery and Cersei. I doubt she’s going to be banging anyone’s head much longer.

  566. kit_hepburn,

Yes, I did like that they emphasized that … of course half the characters on the show are Targaryens according to one theory or another

  567. Lyanna Forever:
    Jane Taylor,

So how many of Ramsay’s hounds can Shaggydog take?

All of them. But it’s not looking good for Rickon. Not cool, D&D! Not cool! First they feed a newborn to the dogs…now we have traded one Stark in captivity for another! Am I jumping to conclusions or did they purposefully show us the Umber banners just before that line? I didn’t really see but I’m assuming fans who know the digits will have noticed.

  568. Firannion,

People were impressed with the “I am the storm” lines? I don’t think he’s just lame, I think he’s completely whacko.

  569. Demon Monkey: All of them.

I figure that aside from Jon and Thorne, another “oathbreaker” from the title will be Small Jon Umber breaking his oath to the Starks.

  570. Sister Kisser,

Benjen is a definite possibility, and it would tie in nicely if he returns to rescue Bran and co. when they’re in trouble.

It could also be Lyanna who accidentally injures Hodor. Young noble girl secretly sparring with non-noble boy, resulting in tragedy; a repeat of Arya in Season 1 and Mycah, the butcher’s boy.

  571. Ryan E: Davos does not know that Mel burned Shireen. He only knows whatever Mel told him about what happened to Stannis and the rest.

This is true, he doesn’t know exactly what happened. He probably thinks they, Shireen and Stannis, were killed by the Boltons. Mel said nothing , literally nothing regarding manner of death particularly nothing to incriminate herself. I didn’t know Liam said anything to the effect that he discovers what happened to Shireen. At least she did good work getting Jon back, first.

  572. Wimsey: The scene directly harkens back to the first episode where Arya upstages her brothers in the archery site.I suspect that visual allusion was deliberate.

And Arya most certainly is charismatic! It’s not making people like you: it’s making people follow you.And Arya shows she can do that throughout Seasons 2 and 3.

Well your both right SHE IS an aunt to both, she loved songs like Sansa, she can handle horses and swords and upstage her brothers, and she will fall for a prince which will cause a war.
Sure sounds and looks like Sansa AND Arya to me.

  573. Demon Monkey: All of them.

Yes, I hate the idea of Ramsay getting hold of another Stark. Come on! Well, this is GOT after all, where heartbreak never ends. Still praying it’s fake Rickon though (if it’s “him” being given as a gift to Ramsay). Of course, Jon and Sansa wouldn’t know it’s not really their brother so they’d still storm WF to rescue him and take back their home.

  574. Just want to type this before I read anyone else’s commments and opinions:

    Maybe it was the beer
Maybe it was turning all the light off and having headphones on so the audio could envelope me
Maybe it was so many key plot points being hit on
Maybe it was the being off book-“what happens next i have no idea factor”

But as far as Game of Thrones the TV show, that was one of my favorite episodes ever. Last week I felt rushed, too many scene changes, not enough happening, not enough time.

Tonight, the 55 minutes rolled by like what I would imagine a perfect slow molasses drip of certain drugs might feel like.

I absolutely LOVED tonights episode. Plot. Shots. Dialogue. Reveals. Pacing. Everything.

Now the fun part of reading back through this thread and seeing how other people felt!

  575. armsbendback,

I’ll have to take time later to read everyone’s comments too. It is kinda interesting to hear how people have their own little rituals for watching the show. A dark room is a must! Alcohol also helps! Haha 😀

  576. wasn’t there an official pic for episode 2 with Tommen sitting next to Pycelle? I miss pycelle

  577. Jsnow,

I don’t take kindly to the personal dig Jsnow. Why the f’n sarcasm? It’s rude. And I’ve never been rude to you. You must feel oh so much smarter than me. Good for you.

  578. rhymeswithweak,

i was sure davos knows about the ww threat…and i am also sure he knows jon is probably the only one that knows more about it than anyone else…if thats the case…it makes perfect sense to me why he would be begging mel ..they need jon snow for the fight to come, i cant believe why all u ppl are wondering why he begged her

  579. ah and it’s very interesting that Jon Snow scene comes right after Balon’s death and funeral, some people were saying that it resolves the magic leech thing and I think it’s a much better way to tie all these parts. Could it be somehow connected to his ressurrection? Like a direct cause or something?

  580. CatspawAssassin,

i don’t know who played this particular character but the man who plays Pod (Daniel Portman) is the true life son of the man who plays Ser Rodrick Cassel (Ron Donachie), he of the great whiskers.

    Well spotted

It was like the training yard scene from the Pilot

As for Sansa and Arya, has always seemed rather obvious to me that Arya takes after Lyanna, this is why Jon and Arya get on so well, but also why Ned is never hard on her and in TV show terms after the whole “I don’t want to be a Lady” in season 1

Sansa takes more after Catelyn and the Tully side of the equation, she is closer to the South and Riverlands in particular

  582. Only 27 comments or so until 1000, should have held the recap article off for half and hour lol

  583. Someone asked earlier, what reason could Theon have for possibly going back to the Iron Islands.

I think Brans conversation with the TER hammers that point “HOME”

With how much treachery he has committed, with how much his dignity/soul/body has been taken from him by Ramsey, with how much violence has been perpetrated to him as well as he has witnessed, nothing his father said or did to him on his first return to Pyke could compare with those horrors. I am not personally sympathetic to his character, as I think he deserved to be put down a LONG, LONG time ago for his treasons, but from his own fractured mental perspective, now that he has delivered Sansa into an Allies care, I can see every reason why his instinct would be to return HOME, whether for redemption or ultimate judgement, let it be at the hands of HIS people.

  584. DireWolfHeart:
Since TOJ will be next week I have my small crackpot theory:

looks good on paper but …. Jojen told Bran his father never told him anything about the rebellion (and this information would have been about the rebellion).
however, Jojen also told Bran he saw the rebellion (TOJ?) with his greenseer abilities. perhaps he mentioned it to Meera?

  585. Ghosts Lunch: Well spotted

Lyanna is both girls and will hopefully see it with a brief Westeros version of Helen of Troy, anyone notice Lyanna wore her hair like Sansa.

  586. GeekFurious: You are willing to bet actual money on a resurrection? Great. Let’s do this. Is there a website that takes PayPal bets and holds them in cue? Because I’m ready to put up $1,000.

    Sorry, but lol!

  587. Redxgod:
So Old Nan was Hodor’s mother? There is a story to tell about how Willis became Hodor and it might involve Lyanna…..

    spoiler/divergence:

Old Nan is Hodor’s great grandmother. She was brought to WF to be a wet nurse for a brother of Bran’s grandfather. Ned once told Bran she was already known as Old Nan when he and Benjen were children.

even if she was portrayed as a younger woman on the show.

edited because it copied the quote about 50 times.

  588. I am not entirely convinced it was Mel who brought him back. Notice her ruby does not glow at all anymore although she obviously can keep her glamour up. She may actually have failed and something else brought him back that will be revealed later. Maybe not but that would be a possible GoT misdirection move to make you think it was Mel’s ritual but it was actually something else…

Also think Roose’s pre-shank comment about being treated as a mad dog taken out back and slaughtered for pig feed is a foreshadowing for Ramsay’s long overdue death…

  589. Nadia:

Only Ramsay, Theon, and Sansa know.

there is a way to tell if it is the real Rickon. he will have Shaggydog with him. a false Rickon won’t.

  590. Sean C.,

I think Ser Davos said as much himself when he first discovered Jon’s body, didn’t he?He said he didn’t know him well but he was impressed, something like that. I have this notion: Wouldn’t it be great if Davos had the signed papers from Stannis, legitimizing Jon, making him a Stark?I also wonder if Jon will realize he is no longer a member of the Watch? He died. So his watch has ended.Who will tell him? As for Thorne, Olly, et al, I’m surprised Dolorous Edd & Thormnd didn’t kill them outright. I hope there is no need of a trial. I hope Jon swings the sword himself.Killing Olly will be hard because Jon liked Olly and at least understood why Olly hated Wildings.

  591. LatrineDiggerBrian,

I thought the resurrection was authentically consistent with its myth origin. There’s a big difference between what is trope and what is consistent storytelling. I expected it to be some sort of melodramatic firey extravaganza and was surprised by its finesse: a small room, only the few most loyal to Jon, a sleeping Ghost, the camera panning between such desperate and hopeful faces, then their collective and crushing disappointment. We pretty much knew he’d awaken after they left, but *they* do not. It was a simple scene made real by depth of character performances, beautiful camera work, lighting, and deft direction, rather than splashy pyrotechnics. I was surprised they chose subtlety over plot-designed-to-wow, something that’s become all too rare for D and D.

  592. Clara,

It might still be ‘on’ in the books, and the show could simply have discarded it to stop confusing the fans. Jojen paste died a horrible end in season 4. I don’t believe a shred of Jojen-paste, but I think Bolt-On is possible. Just me things.

I hope we would get some conversation between Sansa and Pod – after all, they were both part of Tyrion’s household.

  593. I don’t think Jon is going to kill anybody. He knows that he will require each and every member of NW when WW attack the Wall. He knows that war against is more important than his personal grudge.

  594. I also accept that Davos just spent a large number of tense hours shut in a room with men so loyal to Jon that they were willing to die for him even after he was killed. I can imagine what they would have talked about, and I can also imagine someone like Davos recognizing that Jon had leadership qualities that would be the only way to lead a defense against the White Walkers.

  595. Geralt of Rivia: Looks like that horrible theory was confirmed right there.

It was not. Tyrion emphasized before then that dragons were intelligent creatures. What Tyrion did is what people dealing with semi-wild animals do: he approached them calmly and speaking in measured, reassuring tones.

What this did confirm is that dragons are pretty smart: after one was released, the other one made it easier to get released.

    Recall that in the books

someone with Targaryen ancestry does approach them: and they roast him.

Look at it another way: do you think that they would have not torched Viserys in the same situation after he strode into the chamber and started shouting at them to obey him?

However, plenty of other conjectures bit the dust last night!

Atish Vaze: He knows that he will require each and every member of NW when WW attack the Wall.

  596. Wimsey: kit_hepburn: I think all those who are saying that the dragon scene emphasizes Tyrion Targaryen are missing the part where they went out of their way to illustrate:
Good point! So, this episode was brutal on fan conjectures!
    1) Euron ≠ Daario;
    2) No warging or Old Gods in resurrections;
    3) Targaryen blood is not necessary for bonding with dragons;
    4) Roose ≠ Vampire.

Why the eff would Euron be Daario?
    And Roose a vampire?????????? LOL

  597. rhymeswithweak,

You do realize that he didn’t risk his life for Jon? He was captive, with no where to go and knowing Thorne and co. were going to kill him if and when he exited that room.

  598. Dee: Why the eff would Euron be Daario?
    And Roose a vampire?????????? LOL

I don’t think that those theories would be made into the show even if they were true in the books. Written format makes it possible to have lots of hidden easter eggs. You can for example use certain words when describing attributes.

BTW: Congrats having the 999th comment 🙂

  599. Demon Monkey,

I do too. I kind of wish we’d gotten a short little scene of Edd telling him what happened and them taking off towards CB but I guess that would have ruined the element of surprise.

  600. Dee,

I think the Umbers are closest to the wall. Jon gave the wildlings the “gift” area so maybe the Umbers are mad about their new neighbors?

  601. muggy,

No. It was obvious he didn’t warg. Lol.

Makes me think none of the Stark children aside from Bran will do it in the show. This was the chance to show that it’s more than just Bran, but they didn’t take it.

  602. El-Bobbie,

    Im glad they did not.
I like that its just Bran
if it was all the children, I would have like to see it build up from season 1, not all of a sudden.

  603. Was anyone else surprised by how genuine Roose’s hug of Ramsey felt?

I think he really meant it about Ramsey always being his first born. I used to feel he was just playing Ramsey with fatherly bullshit. So that caught me off guard.

  604. Wimsey,

Melisandre sacrificed Shireen. There seemed to be no benefit from that sacrifice and it caused Stannis to lose half his troops and caused Melisndre to lose her faith. But maybe Shireen’s death pays for Jon’s life.

  605. Amnesiac,

    Yeah. I liked that scene.
Roose played with Ramsey, true. But he also married him to Sansa, let him lead the army against Stannis and so on….

I do think Roose wanted Ramsey to follow him.

Indulge this history nerd a bit. It reminded me of Marcus Aurelius and Commodus.
Commodus was mad and stupid but he was his son anyway.

  606. AlexG,

and I bet Benjen is coming back, finally

Agree, with last season’s name drops and the flashback being Ned and Benjen and not Ned and Brandon, looks as if the show is pointed toward him resurfacing. On another note, I hope the ToJ is spread over two or three episodes, it’s to epic for one or two short scenes.

  607. ygritte,

He never had to take Jon’s body in the first place. He doesn’t know who is loyal to Jon. He doesn’t even know what he is doing with Jon. He knows that even the “nice” NW are mostly murderers and rapists.

I think if he doesn’t commit to team Jon he would have been safe to leave.

  608. Ginevra: Wait. You liked the scene with Sansa? You know she’s a Stark, right?I need to save this for proof.

I’m afraid he’ll just have to run around nekkid all season. It will be cold with the winds of winter and all.But I reckon dead men feel no pain.

    Brienne makes everything better.

  609. rhymeswithweak,

Davos is a man of honor. He isn’t the kind of guy to run away or abandone people in need. Not to add that he really has no other place to go.

  610. Nadia,

Wun Wun, Edd or maybe even Ghost are likely to die. Unless they want to get rid of Wildlings altogether or reduce their role. They need someone. Wun Wun might be more likely considering simply he’s a big target. Rain of arrows could do it. Tormund being part of this process makes sense as it was last chance t bring back Jon, he leaved as first like what the hell I was thinking.

  611. rhymeswithweak,

Why is it so difficult to understand Davos’ perspective? He is one of the few Lords in Westeros who is very well aware of what is going on beyond the Wall. He has tried to talk about it with Stannis early on. Jon himself told Stannis and Davos about the danger of WW. Davos saw the hordes of Wildilings fleeing southwards obviously for a reason. He saw Jon going to Hardhome and come back devastated. He knows what a political mess is Westeros and he sees an young man who is down to earth, experienced and with leadership skills to be the only hope. He himself has nowhere to go, he cares about Westeros and that is why he wanted Stannis to rule it but now Stannis is gone because of his stubbornness. He is in the Wall with a woman whom although he deeply dislikes knows that she has magical powers. He has seen them with his own eyes. So put all these in a pot, stir and you have a Davos desperate to do sth with the means he has at his disposal. That is the few loyal friends of Jon + the Wildlings, a witch and still fresh corpse. He is a known for taking risks and he is desperate but he is also honest and kind and someone who cares for the general interest, moreover he has nothing to loose. What would he do? Answer A: He leaves CB as soon as possible in order to save himself like a common coward, like a the most mundane and compromised mediocrity and we call it a natural reaction, one’s survival is most important in the end of the day. Everybody would have done the same. Answer B: He stays and although acting randomly because he is shocked and numb and confused he collects all inner powers left to him in an effort to combine logic with magic as a last hope for an important and more than urgent cause.
You keep answering A and I am still wondering why bother you watching the show… These things are clearly not for you!

  612. Wimsey,

He needs to execute some of them to show what it means to bertray him. I would go on to eve nsay it’s necesarry for him to do it. Not all of them (some of them), just to send a message what happens if they don’t follow his orders. We saw smoke coming out of Castle Black set, unless they wat to burn that one guy who died, somebody is going to get burned alive.

  613. Queenofthrones,

Like I said cliche. Jon had loving family, he never knew his mother. Unlikely Daeny ho was abused, Tyrion suffered too. I don’t want Jon and hopefully D&D are smart enough not to go completely Targaryen way for him. I know many people want it exactly this way but there is a reason why he’s got direwolf (hopefully it stay this way but i have this bad feeling about him) and maybe one day a dragon.

Jon fighting with White Walkers is as likely as Benjen=Daario=Mance or D+D=T.

  614. msd,

That’s a possibility- I agree, it would mirror what we’ve seen from Arya and Mycah well. I am still inclined to think it’ll be Benjen- maybe he takes the fall for Lyanna? Perhaps my judgement is clouded because I want to know why Benjen ended up at the wall (and yes, I know it seems unlikely for a kid to be sent to the wall…. so I am in no way “all in” on this idea, just curious)

  615. Ramsay you psychopathic family annihilating bastard, cannot wait for BBowl!

Well, another great house near extinction, how many does this make?

  616. Dee,

The Umbers have an… unfriendly history with the Wildlings – they are probably the family that has had the most members killed by them. And Jon just let the Wildlings into Westeros, to settle near the Umbers’ home. I imagine, as much as they may hate the Boltons for their betrayal of Robb, they hate the Wildlings more, and are willing to form a temporary alliance to drive them out of the North.

Basically, choosing (in their view) the lesser of two evils.

  617. holy cow – have we ever had a post go over 1000 comments? Wheeee! Think I’ll go over to the new one, this is gonna be too much work to catch up!

  618. It would seem Davos is not yet aware of Melisandre’s complicity in Shireen’s death. In a video clip we see Davos standing over what’s left of Shireen’s pyre? Perhaps he’ll find the carved stag he made for her….I hope there will be a reckoning for Milesandre at Davos’ hand.

  619. Rory,

We have to remember that the carved stag was a thing made of wood. So if Shireen had it with her at the pyre the stag would have most probably been transformed into ashes. In any case even without him seeing the wooden stag or other evidence related to Shireen’s burning he knows very well that Mel is accountable for her death. The question is how would this influence Davos to take revenge for Shireen and kill Mel when after Jon’s resurrection he will realise that Mel had partially right about the WW danger and that she might be of enormous help to Jon in the fight against them. Mel has already admitted that she has been responsible for all this disaster and that she was betrayed by her confidence. Davos is now in the position to see the whole picture and reckon the whys of Mel’s action which can lead to an atonement of his feelings to her. I am sure that being the reasonable character we know he is he will suppress his personal feelings and honour Shireen’s memory via other more meaningful ways than just lets say stabbing Mel when he knows what powers she possess and how can she use them to protect herself if needed it be. So I don’t see her dying from Davos’ hand.

  620. Jarl Stark: I’m a nurse on a neuroscience unit and Hodor is a classic case of expressive aphasia – I’ve had patients who spoke their one word over and over with all the inflection of regular conversation.

Huh, I wonder if Hodor is Lyanna’s Micah.

EDIT: Ah, I see others have picked up on that! Well, that’s actually a good sign for the idea.

BigMac: Basically, choosing (in their view) the lesser of two evils.

Yeah, Game of Thrones is all about dilemmas: and rarely is it the equivalent of choosing between lemon cakes and hot fudge sundaes.

Geralt of Rivia: He needs to execute some of them to show what it means to bertray him.

Or he could let Alliser & others live in order to show that compared to the White Walkers, all of their feuds are petty ones.

dothrakian raven: We have to remember that the carved stag was a thing made of wood.

Damn! Another brilliant conjecture damned by facts. Um… Davos used Volantene Asbestos Wood?

  621. Is anyone else having issues with the site? Everytime I open the site, the most recent post is this one, showing 44 comments. It’s not until I come to this page that I see north of 1000 comments, and I can’t seem to find the recap thread….

  622. dragonbringer,

How can daario be benjen? Didnt tyrion meet benjen at the wall in season 1? And tyrion met daario last season. Maybe books but not the show.

  623. Ok, a theory. Robert Barratheon loved Lyanna Stark. King Robert had dozens of black haired bastards. Ned Stark brought Jon Snow home and wouldn’t tell anyone who his mother was. Is Jon Snow the son of King Robert and Lyanna Stark? (and therefore a contender for the Iron throne?) The only part of this I’m unclear on is this: in season one, did Ned Stark tell Jon, “you are of Stark blood” or “you are my son.” Is this the big twist no one sees coming, that Jon Snow is the true king?

  624. Geralt of Rivia:
    Queenofthrones,

Catelyn had no love for Jon. He doesn’t seem too scarred by that, but she was definitely hateful toward him.

  625. ash:
holy cow – have we ever had a post go over 1000 comments? Wheeee! Think I’ll go over to the new one, this is gonna be too much work to catch up!

Yes. Yes, we have. Only once before though, to my knowledge. So this one makes twice.

  626. Star watcher:
Ok, a theory. Robert Barratheon loved LyannaStark.

The overwhelmingly popular theory is R+L = J, which says Rhaegar Targaryen and Lyanna Stark secretly married when he “kidnapped” her, and then Lyanna birthed Jon in the Tower of Joy scene that we will see this season, I think Episodes 3 and 5. Even though Rhaegar was already married to Ellia, sometimes Targaryens took multiple wives. And so this would make Jon a legit Targaryen heir to the throne, ahead of Dany.

You are right that Ned never said Jon was his son, but he did say that he had Stark blood: You don’t have my name but you do have my blood. Ned did lie to Robert, however, when he told Robert about who Jon’s mother was, in Season 1.

  627. Wimsey: Good point! So, this episode was brutal on fan conjectures!
    1) Euron ≠ Daario;
    2) No warging or Old Gods in resurrections;
    3) Targaryen blood is not necessary for bonding with dragons;
    4) Roose ≠ Vampire.

    5) Bran, Hodor, & Meera are never leaving the cave;
    6) Alliser sends ravens to all the Northern that Jon is dead;
    7) Ramsay won’t kill Roose & Walda

  628. Wimsey: Why is that a complaint?Lyanna’s age relative to Ned is never stated in the books, and it’s not important to the plot or to the story in any way. What is important is that she is his sister.

What also is important, and what they managed to show very well in just one scene, is that Lyanna just oozes charisma, willfullness and competence. This is not Sansa’s aunt: but it very much might be Arya’s aunt.

I think the books do give their relative ages – Book 1 mentions that Lyanna Stark was 16 when she died.

The books also reference Robert and Ned being ~18 at the beginning of the Robert’s Rebellion and age 18 during the tournament at Harrenhal, which is well before the TOJ/Lyanna’s death.

Based on that, Ned is older brother to Lyanna.

That said, the fact that the show goofed it up doesn’t really matter. The show goofs up a lot.

  629. Newbietothegame,

“I want to hear it” Yeah, that’s right, I was just having trouble with the “make our losses their gains” part ! Thanks 😉

  630. Wimsey,

We saw a lot of smoke coming from Castle Black set. That suggest that some people will be burned and those two dying in this episode is not enough. Thorne is stubborn SOB. Basically Jon will be different, Jon before that resurrction wouldn’t do it but now with possibly more trusting Melisandre and him being changed to certain extent. As Beric said part of your soul is taken away.

  631. Dee,

Because they’re stronger house than the Stark now and the Umbers don’t want to be on the (seemingly) losing side. Maybe. So to prove their loyalty, they give

Rickon to Ramsay. And maybe Osha and Shaggydog as well.
  632. Duh…..and who didn’t see this coming???? Yep, Jon’s dead…..until he’s not anymore. He seems to be the most surprised of all regarding his resurrection! Again, duh……
Tyrion is DEFINITELY of Targaryen blood otherwise he would have been an hors d’oeuvre for Viseryon or Rhaegal. But, we knew that too.
A Targaryen alone in the world is a terrible thing. Hullo, Danerys and Tyrion…..actually siblings. Jon, not a Targaryen……. Azor Ahai, the Prince Who Was Promised. Sansa, Theon, Arya, Jon, Danerys, Davos, Edd, Wun Wun, the Wildlings, Melissandre, the dragons……the alliance against the White Walkers……..still waiting for Mr. Frey to become a wolfpack’s dinner……..yay, season 6!

  633. Ginevra,

Do you subscribe to the theory that he warged into Ghost? If so, I’m curious what evidence you saw on the show? I have never bought the theory (which is basically, to my knowledge, only based on his “famous last word” in the book, and maybe the prologue chapter with the wildling warg). The show did not include his last word, and I didn’t pick up on anything last night… All I saw was Ghost sensing that Jon was back

  634. honeyimhome,

Not so sure that Tyrion is definitely anything, other than a knowledgable drinker. There is evidence to support this theory in the books, I agree, but nothing so far in the show.

  635. This episode opens up an interesting potential long-term dilemma for Brienne, one where she would be forced to become an “oathbreaker” regardless of what she does. Given that Melisandre is now apparently a Stark ally, and that Brienne is sworn to Sansa, I wonder how Brienne would react if the two parties (Jon and Sansa) are eventually rejoined given her past with Renly and Melisandre’s role in it. Hopefully, they make the most of this as it offers a lot of space for character development and a reflection on the concepts of personal integrity and honor.

  636. Wimsey,

Davos could find out via the desertors. That makes the most sense to me. Some of them may still be hanging about the north in inns or brothels.

On the question of Jon Snow and the traitors: if he means to stay he can’t let them live. That’s just stupidity. They have proven they want him dead and they will try again. Or they will raise discontent in the ranks. He doesn’t have to kill them all. Just Thorne and the rest who were involved.

If he doesn’t kill Olly this is going to come back to bite him in some way. The tragedy of the hero will be his propensity for forgive his enemies. I doubt Jon dies twice, unless he’s going to become a regular Dondarian.

  637. dothrakian raven,

I think she dropped the stag on her way to the pyre. She wasn’t holding it when she burned.

Still, I think the desertors can come into play here.

  638. Demon Monkey:

The phrasing of what Ramsay said is important. Roose tells him all the northern houses will turn against him if he kills the LC of the NW. Ramsay then says, “Well, the Karstarks, Umbers AND Manderlys have more troops than all the other northern houses combined.” It’s not the Karstarks and the Umbers, it’s all three. The Manderlys WILL betray the Boltons (and the Karstarks and the Umbers) and it’s going to be glorious. Throw in the possibility of the Vale coming to fight for Sansa and the Boltons/Karstarks/Umbers are f*cked.

  639. Anyone else notice the similarities between the conversation Jaime has with Cersei in the last episode with the one Davos has with Melisandre in this one?

  640. Ice Spider: Yes but that was just him HOPING they would be nice to him.. it seems to me the dragons SENSED that he was like more than just a “friend”.. but maybe that is just me being overly hopeful that he is a Targ.

Maybe. I don’t know. We may find out or not. 🙂

  641. Wimsey,

Yeah maybe they do….but I don’t think that just “any noble” would get away with being able to just touch a dragon like that without being something more, Hey I could be wrong but I want to believe that Tyrion is more. Loved that post haste walk back up the stairs to Varys, sure it could have been just drunken bravado too : ) I hope they left the door open.

  642. fact checker: I think the books do give their relative ages – Book 1 mentions that Lyanna Stark was 16 when she died.

Maybe not…….if the actress playing Lyanna in this episode is being used in more than one flashback scene and portraying Lyanna at different ages, then I don’t think it is too much of a stretch for the show. She was young enough looking aside from height for this episode, but on my re-watch, I can also believe she could also be made to look much older with the right makeup and lighting.

  643. Sister Kisser:
    Ginevra,

Do you subscribe to the theory that he warged into Ghost? If so, I’m curious what evidence you saw on the show?I have never bought the theory (which is basically, to my knowledge, only based on his “famous last word” in the book, and maybe the prologue chapter with the wildling warg). The show did not include his last word, and I didn’t pick up on anything last night… All I saw was Ghost sensing that Jon was back

More wood for the fire… Re the did Jon warg in the yes or no debate.

    http://www.popsugar.com/entertainment/Did-Jon-Snow-Warg-His-Wolf-Ghost-Game-Thrones-41162761

    As the last paragraph says:

What do you think? Does Melisandre actually help Jon return, or does he simply warg into Ghost and then warg back? Is it a combination of both? There’s only one thing to do: hold tight until next week, and hope we get some answers.

  644. Black Raven,

Yes, we will have to wait a week for some more info, but I’m not holding my breath- That article really added nothing to the debate that we sullied haven’t already done to death 🙂

  645. While I had quite a few technical difficulties watching this episode (first shouting Lyana and WunWun! in the ANA lounge, then having to wait to see the second half for half a day as in-flight wireless was too slow and too data size limited) it was an amazing episode. I still need to re-watch some more but it worked very well. Of course I also would have liked having Roose alive a little longer.
While I am sure some people disagree due to the famous episode 5.6, I do think that Podeswa is the best director on the show we have seen so far. And he is particularly good in getting big scenes done in rather quiet, natural and understating camera settings. I really like that – I guess everybody can do big action scenes with broad strokes but these subtle scenes generally work much better for me.

  646. Morrigen,

I think the show runners may have changed the birth order of Lyanna and Ned making her older and him younger, because they don’t want a story of a young girl running off with a grown man in later scenes. That, and/or they needed to cast a pretty actress who is very good at horse riding. The characters’ relative ages don’t really have any bearing on the overall story arc anyway.

  647. Ice Spider,

I thought the same thing! She looked defeated before the rez & so did Dondarrion…perhaps when their arrogance is gone thats when their real belief kicks in…

  648. tyjon,

On re-watch I believe Brandon is also there in that scene with Ned and Benjen, I could be wrong but wasn’t he the elder boy standing back instructing Ned?

  649. honeyimhome:
    Again, duh……
Tyrion is DEFINITELY of Targaryen blood otherwise he would have been an hors d’oeuvre for Viseryon or Rhaegal.

IKR? I cannot believe that Missandei is Targaryen, too! No one even theorized about her. I don’t understand why we didn’t see it before.

I’m truly about 50:50 on that one. It could go either way. I like to tease Wimsey because he’s always 100% sure of everything, and I believe that the show has left that door cracked open.

Yes, the fact that Ghost sensed Jon *before* there was any sign Jon was coming back. That bit about smelling different within seconds of dying and within seconds of coming back to life is bullshit, IMO. Souls don’t smell. And the foulness of death takes at least an hour or so, even to be sensed by the sensitive noses of dogs and wolves. And that foulness wouldn’t just evaporate. But then again, Wimsey is the scientist and I suck at biology so maybe he knows something I don’t.

I also believe that D&D, in Inside the Episode, tip their hat to warging. They say something like, all Starks have a strange and deep connection with their wolves. To me, this is because all Starks can warg.

But both of these are far from definitive. Warging wouldn’t have been what saved Jon: only it may have preserved his mind better than Beric and Catelyn so that we have a more genuine Jon coming back. And that is my hope!

  651. Loolaa:
    tyjon,

On re-watch I believe Brandon is also there in that scene with Ned and Benjen, I could be wrong but wasn’t he the elder boy standing back instructing Ned?

Absolutely the older boy instructing Ned is Brandon. If you line up all the kids Lyanna can easily fit age wise. Girls grow faster than boys so she could be taller than Ned but younger than him. Do we know for a fact that she was his younger sister? Maybe she was younger than Brandon but older than Ned and Benjen. Didn’t we all love the line ” keep your shield up or I’ll ring your head like a bell”. So Ned was a part of Jon’s sword training……lots of loose ends going to be tied together this season.

  652. Loolaa,

On re-watch I believe Brandon is also there in that scene with Ned and Benjen, I could be wrong but wasn’t he the elder boy standing back instructing Ned?

Ser Rodrik, only one who can grow sideburns that glorious
