Game of Thrones Interview Round-up: Toby Sebastian, Keisha Castle-Hughes, Joe Dempsie and more

Toby Sebastian

The Dornish crew arrives, familiar faces check in, and Kit Harington hits the chat show circuit to promote his new movie in our newest interview roundup.

Toby Sebastian appears Hunger magazine sharing just how much he knows about Game of Thrones. The actor says that Trystane is “really is just in his own little bubble, caught up in his world with Myrcella” when we meet him this year, despite the tension between Dorne and the Lannisters.

Sebastian admits he doesn’t have a whole lot of info about the story as a whole, such as what Jaime Lannister may be up to.

“I’ll be completely honest with you,” he says. “I know some, but not enough. I’d like to know more. All I know is that a lot is going happen. I watched the first episode at the premiere and I was blown away, I didn’t know anything!”

Apparently he doesn’t get the full scripts for his episodes.

I think some people might. Everything is so confidential. Even just reading my parts alone, I have way too much information for the world. I have friends who ask me things, and I don’t have any idea, and they go, “Absolute bullshit!” It’s not bullshit. I’m actually quite happy that I don’t get to see the full scripts because my brain would fizzle and bubble up with spoilers, and I’d have a huge need and want to blurt it all out – I would never do it obviously, it means too much. But that’s the exciting thing, that’s the beauty of a show like Thrones, how confidential it is. It’s a shame that the first four episodes got leaked, it’s just really sad when that much time and effort goes into something… It’s not the end of the world, but it’s pretty irritating. But it happens.

Sebastian also takes part in a video interview revealing who he’d like to see on the Iron Throne, who has the best lines and more.

And in “interviews that probably don’t matter because we’ve talked the movie thing to death but hey let’s share it anyway:” Kit Harington offered his opinion on the subject of Game of Thrones as a movie in an interview with IGN.

I think it’s possible. […] I think it lends itself very well to the big screen, Thrones. They put it out on IMAX and apparently it worked surprisingly well. Whenever I’ve seen premieres it’s been on a big cinema screen and it’s felt like it belonged there.

I can’t tell you whether they’ll ever do that; I can’t tell you whether they’ll ever want to do that. They wrote it as a TV show and David [Benioff] and Dan [Weiss] felt it lent itself very well to episodic story-telling. I don’t know. If they want to throw millions and millions of dollars at a two-hour movie in the future I think it would almost have to be the climax of something, rather than a whole series squashed down into two hours. That wouldn’t make a lot of sense.

In a more entertaining interview, Kit appeared on the Graham Norton Show recently and admitted his mother had seen his cave sex scene with Ygritte.

She stopped watching after series one when some guy’s arm got ripped off his body and she rang me and said, ‘No, it’s too much, I’m not doing any more’,” he explained. “She decided to pick it up again later on but chose the wrong episode. It was when I was having my love scene in a cave. So I had a second call and she said, ‘No Darling, no more’.

Joe DempsieJoe Dempsie talks to i-D about his newest project, Monsters: Dark Continent, and answers a couple Gendry-related GoT questions.

When asked about the Baratheon bastard’s whereabouts, the actor simply says, “I don’t know… You’ll have to wait and see…”

Later, he elaborates:

At the end of the series last year, I got people asking me on Twitter what had happened to my character, and the producers would absolutely have me strung up if I revealed anything! At the end of the fourth season I Tweeted saying, “Still rowing…” and it took on a life of its own! I can’t say, I don’t know!

Not a very encouraging answer, but then he wouldn’t be able to tell us anything if he did know.

Another new Dornish cast member, Keisha Castle-Hughes, talks to the Hollywood Reporter about the arrival of the Sand Snakes and being a “massive fan of the books.”

Keisha says that she hopes with the Sand Snakes that, “We will win a lot of fans because we are totally on a crusade for the downfall of the Lannisters.”

As for Obara Sand, the actress says her character “mediates and reflects upon her actions in equal measure to the effort she expends on killing people — which sounds like it doesn’t go hand-in-hand, but in Dorne it makes total sense. Martial arts is about the physicality as much as it’s about your state of mind. That really helped me to get into that world of her. She wasn’t just an angry, stern person. There is a sense of inner peace. Every decision that she makes has been thoroughly thought out and mediated upon.”

Castle-Hughes says that she watches the show and read the books when she was in school, and joining Game of Thrones “was the most surreal thing.”

Head on over to the Hollywood Reporter for the full interview.

The most loyal guards of the khaleesi speak with TVGuide this week- Ian McElhinney and Jacob Anderson.

Grey WormAnderson, who plays Unsullied leader Grey Worm, defends Daenerys and says she can understand the plight of the slaves. “She’s had a taste of slavery in a smaller way than the Unsullied,” he says. “She was passed around and she was basically her brother’s slave for a really long time and completely beholden to men. She was owned. So I think she can identify with [the slaves].”

As for Grey Worm, Anderson says, “He’s trying to work out how to be a human being, which is again such a weird, incomprehensible thing, that this is somebody who has never thought of themselves as an individual, or thought about their needs or their desires or who they are.”

Of Daenerys choosing to execute ex-slave and member of her council, Mossador, Anderson says: “I think the whole thing with beheading Mossador was her having to be the law and pragmatic about something that she was emotionally connected to. She quite clearly cared about this person and what this person represents. She’s their mother. It’s one of her children. I think she’s finding it difficult to separate her personal feelings and the responsibility she now has governing a society of people.”

Ian McElhinney says of the episode 2 execution, “She obviously felt, ‘I need to make a statement of intent here.’ Barristan himself is very much a man of principle, but I suspect if he were given free rein to speak his mind, he may say, ‘It’s time to temper that a little.”

Check out the TVGuide interview for more of the actors’ discussion of their characters and Daenerys’s story this season.

  1. Yes, I really look forward to people criticizing the Sand Snakes for qualities and accents that they loved when Oberyn had them.

(Annnnnd the leaked episode content ban continues. Almost over. God I’m looking forward to normalcy.)

  2. I don’t know, but if Trystane speak like his actor (I mean, with his douchey way), I won’t like him.

  3. Toby Sebastian says he wants himself on the Iron Throne…..what!?

That really piqued my interest, I mean I know he was saying some jokes here and there, but I don’t think that was a joke. Trystane should be going after the Throne either way if hes with Myrcella or after Dany, whatever, or if hes Aegon….Come on D&D, dont disappoint us!

  4. Am I the only one who finds that Toby Sebastian and Richard Madden really look like they could have been siblings ? Toby would have made a perfect Jon Snow.

  5. One of Roose Bolton’s leeches,

It seems like there are as many people who like Greyworm/Missandei as there are who can’t stand them, so that’s just differing opinions. As far as people bashing the Sand Snakes, that started the moment they were cast, before anyone had seen anything.

  6. Tyrion Pimpslap,

I used to be a Missandei and Greyworm basher, but then someone showed me some logic. If I could remember who I’d thank them.

  7. Sue the Fury:

(Annnnnd the leaked episode content ban continues. Almost over. God I’m looking forward to normlacy.)

You’re making the case that I have against the Sand Snakes in the show for me: They seem to be, to all intents and purposes, carbon copies of Oberyn.

Anyway, what Joe Dempsie said is pretty encouraging actually. Note that he actually suggests that he does/did have something to hide regarding Gendry’s story (“the producers would absolutely have me strung up if I revealed anything!“)

  8. FNF,

As in revealing he’s been told he’ll never be back? Meh, I see nothing to encourage or discourage…

  9. FNF,

I agree with you about what Joe Dempsie said being promising. I would really love to see Gendry return.

    Alice,

I think he looks more like Kit Harrington than Richard Madden, but we’re both obviously seeing some Stark qualities in his look. I’ve actually wondered if they went with someone who looked a lot like Kit for a reason.

  10. Tyrion Pimpslap,

Yeah, I don’t get why, out of all the scenes that people could issue with, a few (and I do mean few) scenes fleshing out Dany’s supporting cast became such a focal point for criticism.

  11. Sean C.,

It seems like people made their scenes the focal point for what they consider to be pointless crap taking time away from other things which could have been included.

That isn’t how I feel, I’m just saying that’s how it seems many of those who abhor them view them.

  12. Trystane and Myrcella = Romeo and Juliet (GRRM style).
If Trystane is heir to the Dornish throne, why can’t he gain the Iron Throne? To get there, what does he have to do?

Usurp Tommen, if he’s still there. I’m sure the Sand Snakes would soon remove a Lannister cloaked in Stag hide.
What I’d wonder is, if there is a plan Doran has, and it includes discrediting Lannisters, he’s got his bases covered where Myrcella’s concerned. Trystane would need a more suitable bride to unite factions.
Who would that be? Dany is one option, and very obvious. Margaery too? I’m not sure, but you can still have her make the list. Who’s left who’s eligible? Shireen would be too young. Who else is there? Sansa. The girl who dreamed of marrying a prince.
If the show and books are heading to the same conclusion, Sansa becoming Princess of the North would invoke an ancient title. Trystane to wed Sansa would bring the houses Rhaegar would have had with his cause together.
Is that in LF’s plans though? Quite possibly. Where did he get his lemons from for Lysa? Sansa loves lemon cake. Citrus fruits abound in Dorne.

Mind you, I’d be completely wrong. We are talking about a story GRRM is authoring. Just hang on a mo…. Bittersweet ending?

  13. One of Roose Bolton’s leeches,

Are you thinking of Wimsey’s response that had very good reasoning about the actors?

Btw, does anyone know if a lot of the regular posters aren’t posting because of the leak? I hope they aren’t avoiding the site in general. I miss reading a lot of the discussions.

  14. I’m definitely worried about Dorne. I haven’t heard much about the Sand Snakes so far, but what I have heard makes it seem like they’re identical personalities, who act as a trio rather than as 3 different people at different stages of their lives who are united in wanting revenge. Let’s not forget that they even want that revenge in different ways. “Your sister Obara wants me to declare war. Nymeria is content with murder. And you?” “War, but not my sister’s war.”

Meanwhile, a character we do know is cut and a wordless character is given a prominent role.

It may turn out well but right now there aren’t any positive indicators.

  15. I’m definitely looking forward to when we all are at the same point in the show and NO one has the ‘inside scoop’. At the same time, I don’t want to wish the season away, given how quickly it goes once it’s here.

  16. Tyrion Pimpslap:
Negative Greyworm-Missandei and Sand Snake comments in 3….2….1….

We have to wait a bit more for the latter around here, don’t we? Cue negative Sand Snake comments in 41…40…

  17. Joffrey’s Cunt,

Its definitely false. We know Melissandre is not staying at the wall, unlike the books. Also, some of the scenes are just really dumb and I refuse to believe them.

  18. Everything that happens in the pit with Dany is definitely in episode 9, so I would assume it’s just fan fiction…
  19. I took Toby Sebastian saying he wanted himself on the iron throne as being a joke – after all he did say Tyrion pretty soon afterwards. It’s a bit early in the day to say whether or not the Sand Snakes are portrayed well or not this season. They are making show Ellaria a very different character to book Ellaria though – I don’t THINK that’s a spoiler hence haven’t covered it.

  20. ZappaCreed,

I think the most likely outcome is that Trystane will take over Ariannes TWOW storyline.
Sorry I can’t go into detail because I don’t know how to spoiler code on my phone

  21. I’d like to share a link to this recapper, who’s knowledgeable and enthusiastic and posts her videos late. She should get more views:

  22. Off topic: I know that the new GOO episode is out, but I don’t see it posted here. Did it get lost in the mailroom or something?

  23. My show Gendry theory:

Varys: “Jon Aryn had the right of it, the seed is strong. All this time right under your nose. King Robert was not a man who cared who he bedded. That whore he bedded was not a simple wench. She was the wife of Illyrio Mopatis, she was the last of the Blackfyre line. I’m never one to put all my eggs in one basket Lord Kevan. Gendry has been shaped for rule before he could walk. Like Aegon the V it was important to have someone who would know the struggles of the small folk by living with them, being part of them. Gendry has lived with thieves and beggars, worked with his hands, swum in rivers and learned to wash his own clothes at need. He knows what it is like to be hungry, to be hunted, to be afraid. I was the one who sent him to join the Nights Watch after Robberts death. Tommen has been taught that kingship is his right. Gendry knows that a king must put his people first, and live and rule for them.”
  24. Sue the Fury,

Hey Sue – I expect that you’ve heard that someone on 4-Chan is claiming to have seen the whole of season 5 and has been posting ‘spoilers’. I was wondering if you know anything about this or if your sources could confirm/ deny his claims? Thanks

  25. wizardeyes,

I think his claims are contradicted by stuff we know about the season: events in the wrong episodes, people in places we know from trailer images they’re not, scenes not at all how they were described by D&D, etc.

  26. Joffrey’s Cunt,

Wow. Like you said, some parts seem very plausible. And some people are alive that I wouldn’t have expected to be. Really doubt that ANYONE has had access to the full season though. Interesting though. And no one is going to be won over by the SS…

Hopefully HBO has figured out that perhaps sending one episode to screeners is the max they should be doing.

  27. Hoyti Von Totiy,

Do we know that for sure in the show? I always imagined the Targaryens with straight hair in the books, but Viserys and Danny both have curly hair in the show. Not as curly as Jon’s, but I still thought that Dany’s curly hair was a bit of a nod to R+L=J
  28. Durrandon’s Fool,

Don’t indulge him. He has some weird dislike of curly hair on men. Also, it is possible for someone to have curly hair, even if his parent/parents didn’t. The actor who plays Rickon has curly hair, should we start speculating that he isn’t Ned and Cat’s son?

  29. Lyanna Mormont,

Zack may or may not have fallen asleep. I’m sure he’ll post it later.

As for spoilers- I don’t go to 4chan but if it’s the same idiot claiming to have seen episodes via a cast member, they’re lying.

  30. Turncloak,

Has anyone considered Varys might be a girl and only poses as a male eunich?

Think about it. GRRM had Arya pose as a boy, and Varys is a master of disguise.

Varys(a) gets Robert Baratheon drunk and Gendry is the result of that union.

Or Illyrio gets it on with Varysa and fAegon is the result.

  31. Tyrion Pimpslap:

Real men have curly hair on their balls and around their anus NOT on their head thats for girls.

  32. Is this the first time that we’re in may and we still don’t have all the episode titles? I think it is, I wonder what takes them so long.

  33. Balerion The Cat:
Is this the first time that we’re in may and we still don’t have all the episode titles? I think it is, I wonder what takes them so long.

I suspect it’s because the last 2 episodes probably have really revealing titles, like “Stab! You’re Dead!”, or “The Killing of —–, —–, and —–“, or perhaps “What Ever Happened to That Plot?”

  34. It could be a tamp down on everything following the leaks, or a sign they’re finalizing the episodes at a slower rate than usual. Or perhaps they’re distracted by overhead dragons. Or season 6.

I irrationally eat up every bit of information, even when it’s just titles. It would be fun to hypothesize from a few today. Would have liked The Shield That Guards The Realms of Men for Episode 9 last year, but am happy Davos gave the phrase some attention recently.

  35. Hoyti Von Totiy,

I did wonder about the “Varys is a woman” theory at one point- but someone told me lots of people have had the thought and then dismissed it. I don’t think people read Dennis Wheatley books anymore – I read them in my youth – and I think I may have mentioned this long ago on another thread (or on the site that shall not be named), in my youth I read some of his work. In “The Eunuch of Stamboul” the eunuch was found after death to have been a woman. You are quite right that Varys is a master of disguises, but the story (show) Varys told about how he was mutilated had the ring of truth about it so I tend to think Varys is what he says he is (though we still don’t really know what his full motivation is).

  36. I don’t think people realize how much contracts influence characters screen time. The reason why there is a Grey Missandei romance is most likely due to their contracts stipulating they get a certain amount of screen time.

  37. Tyrion Pimpslap,

Yeah I couldn’t agree more, that and much more storylines seem to be fake in that post, but the Winterfell one was very detailed and seemed like something that could happen, the 3 actors talked about a scene they’ve made that will be shocking and hard to watch.

  38. JamesL,

Emmanuel and Anderson would not be able to negotiate screen time guarantees. They wouldn’t have the leverage, and such contractual provisions are rare.

  39. Off topic, but I’m watching the new episode of Outlander and just noticed that Francis Magee (Yoren) is in the episode!! Nice! Seems like a minor part so far but still cool.

BTW, I’ve really been liking the show. A very good companion program to GoT in my opinion.

  40. Squirrel:
    ZappaCreed,

I think the most likely outcome is that Trystane will take over Ariannes TWOW storyline.
Sorry I can’t go into detail because I don’t know how to spoiler code on my phone

You’re talking book, I’m trying to use the version D&D are creating. In that you need to use only those characters they’re using. They leave little room to introduce more unused book characters who take away plots they’re intending to work round. There’s evidence already that D&D are willing to go well away from the source.
That proves the show is like another maester’s telling of history, which was set up with ‘The World Of Ice And Fire”. Is there a better way to separate book from show? It’s very real world too, where different experts in any given field can give opposite opinions.
Look at how many theories there are, on so many topics in this world, and how many try to cut them to pieces. We’re all maesters at heart, in a way.

  41. JamesL,

I don’t think that’s it. Look how much screentime Carice van Houten got is S4, if actors negotiated screentime she would have had more.

Plus, Ehmanuel and Anderson’s screentime, I imagine, is actually pretty high. Missandei in particular is in almost every scene Daenerys is in, translating.

It’s not a matter of screentime, or anything you can negotiate. They decided to flesh out some non-POV characters, which they have done since the beginning of the show.

  42. ZappaCreed,

Maybe I articulated myself badly (english isn’t my first language).
What I wanted to say was that Trystane could play Ariannes role as the Martell who goes to meet with a Targaryen (Dany not young griff). But who knows, maybe that storyline is completely irrelevant to the bigger picture and they scrap it altogether.

  43. Trystane names Myrcella “my Queen”! I wonder in he is talking of a Dornish queen, since Dorne only knows a prince and princess…

So, @Squirrels theory might be plausible.

  44. OT: It looks like Martin has cleared up his appearances, nothing from august to february next year. 🙂

  45. H. Stark:
