The North Remembers: April and May 2012

Raven LogoHello, faithful Watchers! Today I bring you another look at what was going on in our Game of Thrones community three years ago, and this time it’s a double feature covering April and May, due to personal circumstances that prevented me from posting this feature at the end of last month.

  • April 1st saw the premiere of Season Two, and we enjoyed all the excitement a season bring.
  • Just before, though, a number of character posters have been revealed. For example the one of Robb posted below.
  • Season two had it’s share of leakage problems, though nothing like what we are (sadly) experiencing this year. Episode 202 was available on HBO Go in certain regions a week ahead of time.
  • Already in the early episodes, we had to say goodbye to Elyes Gabel (playing Rakharo) and Francis Magee (playing Yoren). Somewhat later, they were joined by Gethin Anthony (playing Renly) and Ron Donachie (playing Ser Rodrik).
  • At the very end of May, episode 209 “Blackwater” aired in all its spectacular glory. It was teased ahead of time with this video.
  • There was a slew of promos while the season was already airing: a TV spot with quotes from critics, a new trailer, and two twitter-centric promos.
  • Soon after the season premiere, Game of Thrones was renewed for a third season. Casting was soon revealed to be already ongoing, naturally. The month of May brought a whole array of casting new and rumours.
  • We got hold of rumours that Kristofer Hivju was being tapped for a role, and were correct in recognizing him as our future Tormund. We also learned they were looking for a Shireen and a Daario Naharis, as well as a character to fulfill the role of Vargo Hoat (eventually called Locke). A leaked audition tape confirmed Edmure Tully was being cast as well.
  • Eventually, Entertainment Weekly officially confirmed a partial list of new roles, adding more to the above: Mance Rayder, Jojen and Meera Reed, Brynden Tully – the Blackfish, Lady Selyse, Lady Olenna, Beric Dondarrion, and Thoros of Myr.
  • Our fan casting for Ramsay listed Iwan Rheon! Another score for the community.

Hear Marko Roar: In-season is of course always a busy period, and the above list proves it. What do you remember most from three year ago?

  1. Oh I remember, I remember !

I remember all those promos we had, and the massive flow of casting informations we got ! These were epic times !

  2. Iwan Rheon is the worst casting in GOT history.Ramsey was a psycho not a comedy villain

  3. Gd75,

I know there’s been uproar after last week but in my opinion Sansa knew what was coming she is playing the long game it should not be hard for her.The show Ramsey is a fool

  4. Moles town bastard,

I don’t know, you’re entitled to your opinion, but personally I think that “comedic” edge show-Ramsay has is what makes thim a true sadist. If one had to sum up Ramsay in one word, I’d say “sadist” is more important than “psychopath”. He isn’t just cruel in a distant, completely removed sort of way; he actually revels in the moment and loves what he does. Maybe his expressions are a bit more manic than book Ramsay repeatedly smiling that wet smile of his, but I actually really like Rheon’s take on it.

  5. The Rat Kook,

I kind of agree with some of your points he is funny and I do like the actor in other stuff ( misfits) but when I read theon chapters I imagined Ramsey mad but hard and scary. Sadly Iwan is not mad or scary just making silly faces!!! Looking forward to poor little Sansa (or poor little reek) finishing the idiot off

  6. Moles town bastard,

Just wanted to add I’m not one them book purists I bought the first book the day after they chopped neds head off in the show. D & D r spot on in 99 per cent of the casting but for me they got Ramsey wrong,!

  7. I actually just hate Ramsay as a character. Period. I wish GRRM would actually write the grey area characters he gets credit for, instead of filling his books with one blacker than black sadist after the other. One Joffrey was enough, thank you very much.

I much prefer conflicts like Blackwater where you have characters to root for on the both sides, like Tyrion and Davos.

However, show!Ramsay is not as bad as book!Ramsay just because Iwan Rheon makes him more playful with some ironic self-awareness.

  8. Homplomplom,
It’s just people’s perceptions are different for me show Ramsey is poor . By contrast show bronn brilliant much better on screen than on page. EXample I read all the books between series 1 and 2 when I read the books I imagined James purefoy as the perfect stannis so when I reread them it’s still him that I see ( I love dillanes portrail by the way) everyone’s different so that’s what makes sites like this one great
