Surveying the Realm: Take Part in This Major Survey of Game of Thrones Fans!

Surveying the Realm

by Chris Wright aka James Rivers

What do Game of Thrones viewers think of the show’s plot, characters, and themes? This is your chance to help find out! At the link below is a comprehensive survey regarding the first seven seasons of the show. You can take part in the survey whether or not you’ve read the A Song of Ice and Fire books. It’s structured so that you can spend 15 minutes on it, or quite a bit longer- choose your own adventure!

The survey will be open for two weeks, until Sunday April 29th at midnight EST. The results will be presented and analyzed at Con of Thrones on Sunday, May 27th at a panel called “Surveying the Realm.” The results will also be posted here at Watchers on the Wall not long after!

In another internet life, I did something like this regarding a different TV show. Special thanks to Sue the Fury for remembering that and encouraging this project, as well as to Petra for reviewing an early draft and adding a couple questions, and Patrick Sponaugle for reading through the episode and season synopses that are included. A few other WotW staff test-drove the survey as well.

Oh, and this is important: Please DO NOT DISCUSS the survey in detail in the comments. If someone reads such comments and then does the survey, it could inadvertently affect their answers and make the results less accurate.

Thank you all, and have fun!

  1. I love surveys and the intricate data they provide! This was a fun one, too. If you have the time, I wholeheartedly recommend you do the complete version of the survey, though you will have to have individual episodes in mind to do it properly.

  2. Filled up!

I had only one minor issue…in the question asking our preferences for the characters books versus show, Jon Snow was the only major character that was not included. He should have been included imo, since he is one of the characters who has had a significant change books vs show.

  3. Luka Nieto:
    ghost of winterfell,

Jon was there for me, I’m pretty sure.

I think he was the first one on the list for me.

    —-
I’m currently rating episodes and I don’t want to back up… Was it asking to rate each episode individually or rate the episodes in each season worst to best? I wouldn’t want to rate an episode a 1 because even my least favorite episodes are way better than that.

  4. ghost of winterfell,

You are correct. Jon is included in a question early in the survey regarding book/show, but not in a later one. I can’t exactly say why. I wonder if I can add him without screwing up things.

I was able to add him to that question. Thanks for noticing that.

  6. That was very interesting and thought provoking for me, I’m not going to spoil anything but when I was answering about actions being justified, at the first glance I thought I had the answer, but looking at the other options and comparing them together , I was in a moral dilemma lol

  7. I did the longest version, and it took well over an hour. I tend to deliberate longer than most probably would.

  8. I filled out the long version of the survey, and I was happy to do so – it was a great deal of fun! Furthermore, the timing was perfect. I had just wrapped up another complete series rewatch of all 67 episodes last weekend, so it was all fresh in my mind! 🙂

  9. ghost of winterfell,

Yes, I wanted Jon on the characterization book vs. show question, too. I’m consistently frustrated by the dumbing down of show Jon ( and that characters like to remind the audience he’s not perceived as bright “Sansa and her dolt brother”). Book Jon is shrewd, very observant (although this is somewhat hampered when he becomes LC) and more pragmatic.

  10. Did the complete survey for book readers, some questions are simple yet hard to answer – especially justified or nor justified! So I just went with my gut instincts really.

  11. I either caught an error, or my memory isn’t what it used to be:

    Q.10:
The Bolton Army defeats the Baratheon army outside Winterfell (Season 5)

When was there ever a Baratheon army at Winterfell?

  12. Lavignac:

    Q.10:

Stannis’ army where they were defeated by Ramsay’s

  13. Well, that was a lark! It took about an hour, mainly because the first time I reviewed episode synopses I had trouble getting back to the survey. I think I did see Jon on the book v show characterisation question. I should have liked to see a bonus question as corollary to the “who do you want to live?” question: who do you predict to live? I’m going to the Con–this should provoke a lively discussion.

  14. Stark Raven’ Rad,

Thanks! I reluctantly left out overt prediction questions in case people who were spoiled answered things (I don’t follow spoilers other than what’s “officially” posted here, but it seems there have been leaks to some extent, accurate or not). But if suddenly a certain proportion of takers answered prediction questions all a certain way…

  15. James Rivers: I was able to add him to that question. Thanks for noticing that.

No problem! Soo…can I go back and answer this one question or do I have to fill the whole thing again?

    Chreechree,

I agree, which is why I noticed his name missing in the first place lol.

  16. OT btw… Happy Birthday to Maisie (yesterday)!
Hard to believe that little kid wearing the too-big helmet is 21.

  17. I’m really interested in the results. Maybe you should do several articles with the results. Puting everything in one could be too much.

  18. I found it extremely difficult to “please choose how justified you feel the action taken was (as opposed to how justified the character taking the action felt).” “or how you first felt when…”

I’ve spent too much time trying to be objective to each character and how they are thinking or feel… especially when they do things that we (modern society/laws) wouldn’t do/couldn’t get away with.
I am so okay with actions in GOT land that I normally would not be… ahh ethics and morals, context is the grey area, sometimes 🙂

  19. Well, that didn’t take long at all. Wasn’t hard to select

my favorite character, Arya Super Ninja Assassin Warrior Princess, with Sandor Ahai a close second. Least favorite was easy too: The High Sparrow, with DouchebagFinger in second place. Favorite episode: toss up between Hardhome S5e8 and Mockingbird S4e7; had to go with the latter because of Arya & Sandor. Third place: Two Chickens S4e1, for the same reason.

I have to admit I was a bit disappointed that my boy Ol’ Blue Eyes wasn’t included in the character rankings or justifications of actions. Yes, his dialogue is sparse. But he’s just shy. He’s the life of the party after a few beers.

  20. PS A good category would’ve been best character evolution (including the old cliche, “redemption arc”), eg, Sandor Clegane, Jaime Lannister, Hot Pie, Jon Snow, and (because Petra would have my head on a spike if I didn’t mention him) Theon Greyjoy.

Yah, not sure what I’ll do about that yet. Sue and I will negotiate later 🙂

  22. Fun survey! I’m excited to see the results.

Especially for the “justified actions” questions.
  23. Done! Aside from having all of my episode ratings wiped out (AAAUGH) and having to re-do, it was a great survey! Good luck!

  24. Stoneheart:

Yup, good and justified are not always the same. It was fun to “justify” some actions I absolutely dislike as they are harming favourite characters.

Could be just me, but by doing the survey I noticed whoever is asking for it by doing “bad” things or making wrong decisions, usually gets it, sooner or later. Helps feeling a bit optimistic for the finale, but there’s still the issue with the bitter part of it…

  25. Just found a mistake in question 13:
Cersei poisons Tyene and leaves Ellaria to starve (Season 7)

It’s explicity stated Ellaria is to live, even if they are to force feed her.

But thanks for fun and/or grueling question answering.

  26. Marlana:
Please explain how to get past capcha. It does not acknowledge that I am not a robot.

    ———–
I wondered why that Captcha thing was there to begin with. Don’t tell me Vlad’s Bot Army would try to hack a GoT fan survey to sway the outcome….

  27. Marlana:
    James Rivers,

Please explain how to get past CAPTCHA.I press the squares with cars or signs, press verify, then submit. The grid goes away. That is all.

Huh. For me it just shows a box and I put a checkmark in the box and that is it. It did it that way while I was testing it out last week too. You could try an incognito window? Or a different browser?

  28. James Rivers,

After I press the boxes, the check mark occurs automatically, then I press submit and the screen renews to the original. I have tried it many times.

  29. Well, that was fun. I’ll be interested to see what the analysis says. I saved my ratings of the episodes to compare when the results come out!

  30. What fun!

I only stopped before rating ALL the episodes, I’m not that hard core of a fan, haha.

Very good questions, and I’m looking forward to WotW reporting the results from them all, hopefully in 3-7 posts fully analysing the data and giving some anecdotes.

Only, a bit here and a bit there… A box for open comments after the box- ticking, could’ve got you even more and more interesting data. Some questions I felt were difficult to chose on the scale so it could’ve been nice to have a chance to explain my choices in a box. Especially the lovely thorny justified- unjustified question – I salute you for asking it, it was the best one!

Thank you for your effort in devising this survey, and really looking forward to the results and the analysis.

That would have been fun! But as it turns out, not practical, since, well, I have more than 2K responses! Yee haw

Must be different for different IPs. I use a VPN and find I get different types of Captchas on the same sites depending on the IP I am connecting from. I got the checkbox only for this. Fun fact about the checkbox I read somewhere; A bot would click the very center of the box while it is virtually impossible for a human to click the very center.
