HBO has released seven new photos from this weekend’s new episode of Game of Thrones, “High Sparrow.”

The synopsis of the season’s third episode:

In King’s Landing, Queen Margaery (Natalie Dormer) enjoys her new husband. Tyrion and Varys walk the Long Bridge of Volantis.

New HQ photos below the cut!

Written by David Benioff & D. B. Weiss and directed by Mark Mylod, as we can see from the photos below, in this episode we catch up with the Boltons of Winterfell (Damn that map!) and Tommen takes a bride.

  1. And in a marriage for money the bride wears gold…. and again later apparently. Maybe a subtle message to Cersei… “I know you need me.”

People who’ve seen the leaked eps, are all three big storylines in this? (Cersei, Dany, Jon)

  2. I love the two people in the window in the second picture. That is a first class apartment in Kings Landing, and they like to show it!

  3. SirSquinty,

You really don’t have to be rude about it. It’s understandable people would be abuzz about it, but we would rather people not leak that info all over the place. Not to mention HBO is coming after everyone, so I would appreciate people keeping that stuff away from our website.

  4. I can’t wait until we don’t have dodge leaked episode talk anymore!

Could there maybe be an open thread for people who want to discuss them with a ban on talking about any of the episodes until after they air in every other thread?

Now I know how unsullied feel when people insist on bringing up the books in their threads!

  5. So it seems at last after 3 attempts, Margery is going to get a wedding night shag …….

  6. Are these promotional photos taken from actual footage, or separate still photography (well, in the case of the photo of the Sept, still photography plus CGI)?

  7. On topic, it’s interesting that one of the pictures is of Qyburn.

Even after Qyburn was cast I wasn’t sure if they’d do the UnGregor plot. It looks like they’re not only including it, they’re emphasizing it. I guess it must be pretty important?
  8. SirSquinty:
    Mormont,

Go away. This is a site for people who want to watch the show, not the crappy leaked versions of the show.

I haven’t seen the leaks, I literally just wanted to know if there was Meereen in this episode… since you know, the previews show which plots are in the episode

    But understood, Sue.

  9. SirSquinty,

Everyone keep their pantyhose on. Mormont was just askin’. He wasn’t talking about anything specific. He was ASKING for specifics. If anyone had answered him, then you can cry foul.

  10. I think it’s going to be a corker. Can’t wait!!

Ramsay Bolton totally gives me Dennis the Menace vibes with that haircut.

  11. “In King’s Landing, Queen Margaery (Natalie Dormer) enjoys her new husband. Tyrion and Varys walk the Long Bridge of Volantis.”

Geez…that is the least invigorating episode synopsis ever.

…but I am looking forward to 1) Volantis, 2) if Ser Pounce makes an awkward cameo during the wedding/bedding, and 3) discovering what Qyburn is writing about.

  12. Volantis! New locale, yes!! Looking forward most to the Varys-Tyrion scene in Volantis. Love, love the new locales in Season 5 so far. I for one, am so heartily bored of King’s Landing and the same old, sour-faced Cersei. Plus, we will have 4 distinct places in Essos in S5 by the end of this episode.

  13. I know it reads, “Margaery enjoys her new husband”, but I highly doubt there will be a bedding (implied or onscreen). It would be inappropriate. Hopefully they just go hawking or something. 🙂

  14. HelloThere,

sex is Margaery’s most potent weapon and young Tommen should grow up to fully appreciate it…. that is why Cercei is so paranoid about her….

  15. Sue the Fury:
    Laurentius,

Yeah…only they’re wearing modern clothing. Oops! Not extras.

HAHAHAHAHAHA! That’s hilarious! Those two are forever a part of the show now. Gonna look for more bombers in the episode. 🙂

  16. Sansa is looking pretty miserable while riding. That’s the same face I see in a mirror after a night with too much drinking… :p

  17. If that’s the main entrance to the Sept of Baelor where exactly was Ned executed, round the back?

  18. Mormont,

That’s not the case, sadly. The Sept simply does not make visual sense between seasons. They changed the design; that’s it. The sept itself looks completely different in season one, though we only glimpse it. Since then, it’s had a pretty consistent design, though season four added larger towers to it, around the dome.

Then there’s the Baelor statue. The Baelor statue from which Arya saw his father die was an old stone statue pretty far away from the sept, while in season three it’s just besides the entrance, and made from dark green marble. Also, there are inconsistencies even within the episodes. In the city’s establishing shot seen in one of this year’s trailers (which belongs to next episode), the Baelor statue remains where it’s been since season three, but this season each time we have seen the stairs towards the entrance (such as in this promo shot), we should see part of the statue, yet it simply isn’t there.

And then there’s the fact that the establishing shot of season four and the one from this season seen in the trailer have the Sept entrance looking in different directions, and the surrounding buildings are completely different. It’s just one of those things —the CGI budget is high, but they can’t afford to do fully comprehensive 3D models of everything (Meereen being an exception, it seems.) Composites like those are bound to be inconsistent.

  19. Luka Nieto,

In this promo picture the statue is hidden by the building, compare it to this one :

    http://img2.wikia.nocookie.net/__cb20150412170141/gameofthrones/images/d/d9/GreatSeptS3.jpg

The different stairs and the balcony makes me think it’s another entrance, the sept is huge and it’s has seven sides so maybe each side have it’s own entrance.

Also because i’m continuity nerd i’d like to think that the statue we saw in Ned’s execution is a mini Baelor in the backside.

  20. There are many ways to interpret labels, but if you ask me, I’m a feminist. And on the internet, too, obviously.

  21. Sue the Fury,

    maybe wrong wording…

You know… the people who will somehow take

Margaery bedding Tommen as a sign that D&D are fist pumping frat boys and completely ignore the context of Westeros where a 13 yr old Dany can have enjoyable sex w/ 40 year old Drogo
  22. Luka Nieto,

I seem to recall that season one was shot in Malta (for Kings Landing at least). For Season Two onwards Kings Landing has been shot in Dubrovnik, Croatia.

  23. Nice pics. Cersei is looking nuttier and Margary looks sublime as usual. And what the heck is Qyburn doing there? (Don’t answer that)

  24. HelloThere,

    Margaery

bedding Tommen is the keystroke to the Tyrell’s master plan. To do this Margaery will first entice, tempt, seduce, excite, manipulate and then dominate Tommen. Once she has his undivided attention Cercei’s influence and control over Tommen will evaporate. Cercei may be concerned about Marcella’s fate in Dorne, but it’s the fear over losing Tommen to the Tyrell’s that finally drives her over the edge, and eventually leads to her taking the walk episode 9 …….hence Cercei’s slow descent into madness
  25. I just Googled age for Tommen and it said “around 12” and age for Margaery “around 22”. *shrug* It is a fantasy movie…I am sure it isn’t promoting any sort of immorality *incest* *cough*

LOL. I could care less. We already know that they marry and we can presume that poor ol’ smirking Margaery finally gets a “bedding” making the marriage legal.

I can hear the wailing and gnashing of teeth already. *sits back with some popcorn and waits for the show*

  26. Bergey, I thought exactly the same thing! Did anyone spot other characters? Maybe I need to relook at the wall and look for Gared Tuttle? Or Maybe Asher and his female companion are seen in the background of Dany’s storyline.

  27. HelloThere,

lol, good point. But I don’t think there’s much difference between internet feminists and non-internet. Just look at some of the videos they make on YT… *rolls eyes*

  28. Dame of Mercia:
    Luka Nieto,

I seem to recall that season one was shot in Malta (for Kings Landing at least). For Season Two onwards Kings Landing has been shot in Dubrovnik, Croatia.

Correct. S1 was shot in the old town of Valetta, Malta. Had to move to Dubrovnik due to issues with the Maltese govt being concerned about potential damage to the world heritage area of Valetta.

  29. Chimeny,

I actually consider myself as a feminist if you use the definition of wanting gender equality.

I feel like talking about this stuff could open a gigantic can of worms that need not be opened.

  30. Ahhh finally the Boltons. My favourite arc of ADWD can begin (an altered version of it, anyway).

I hope that’s the last time we have to go two episodes in a row without seeing them/Winterfell.

  31. Ever notice how everyone at Winterfell looks kinda grey? Reminds me of Pittsburg in the 60’s.

  32. Is it just me or do the helmets that they Bolton soldiers are wearing look like a single boob with a nipple on top?

  33. Isn’t it odd we STILL don’t have the official synopsis of episodes 4 -7, nor the titles episodes 8-10?

  34. Ahh my name autocorrected damn phone.
I wonder what the reaction would be if tommen and Margary do have sex? Tommen is older and although Dormer skipped around it (respect her for that) I think it’s a natural progression for their relationship and perhaps I’m a poor feminist but I’ll not be bothered

  35. oier,

HBO is so pissed about the leaks that it wouldn’t surprise me if we don’t get the synopsis and episode titles until 7-10 days before each episode airs.

  36. oier:
Isn’t it odd we STILL don’t have the official synopsis of episodes 4 -7, nor the titles episodes 8-10?

And why is that so important?

  37. Chastely Rock,

    So I actually Googled ‘chastely’.

    Chaste
    [cheyst]
    adjective, chaster, chastest.

    1.
refraining from sexual intercourse that is regarded as contrary to morality or religion; virtuous.

    2.
    virgin.

    3.
not engaging in sexual relations; celibate.

Keep it as your name, imo.

  38. HelloThere,

I have a friend who was 40 and married a 16 year old here in the States, so it still happens in this day and age. She is a college grad with a business degree now and they have two children, so she isn’t some dumb redneck country girl either.

  39. I really don’t want to believe Margaery would have sex with a 12 year old 🙁

    Plus if she does then

there’ll have to be another way for Cersei to nail her because then she wouldn’t be lying about being a virgin and committing adultery/treason… she’d be a consumated Queen

Of course Cersei could have another way but… until someone gives me one I’ll go on being blissfully ignorant

  40. Luka Nieto,

The actor isn’t twelve, but someone up in the comments above said google says he’s 12… and Renly said he was 8 halfway through season 1….

  41. Hear Marko Roar:
Did Bolton men-at-arms just get signature helmets?

It looks that way. Unfortunately, I am incapable of looking at those helmets without thinking “silly English Kuuuuuh….Niggits!”

    minty:
Sansa is looking pretty miserable while riding.

Yeah, it’s incredible how pale and drawn she looks in that still. Sophie Turner has such a round, dewy, youthful face that I never would have guessed they could make her look like that, even with all that black and the horrendously unflattering filter they use for the North. She really does look stressed, doesn’t she?

  42. Lars,

tyjon: Still upset HBO is going after bars who have GoT nights for fans, to me that is going to far.

If bars want to advertise showing TV events, then they have to pay extra to do so. This applies to sporting events, movie channels, and anything else like this. They know this perfectly well when they sign the contracts with cable companies, after all: the cable companies make sure to tell them this because they hope that the bars will pony up.

Mormont: Of course Cersei could have another way but… until someone gives me one I’ll go on being blissfully ignorant

They can use the exact same thing: the issue was not what Margaery did in a vacuum: it is what she (supposedly) does while Queen. Westeros (like many real Asian, European and African societies in the real world with comparable societies) deems that treason.

  43. OrtMeyer,

The earliest Victarion and Euron Greyjoy interact with the main plot/characters is

the Battle of Meereen, which might not even be in the show considering Daenerys isn’t even there, and Oldtown if Euron invades while Sam is there, which could be in season 6
  44. OrtMeyer,

I think it’s pretty much confirmed that the Greyjoy plot ‘aint in season 5. And because of that, I don’t think it’s going to be in the show at all. If the show’s 7 seasons long then they can’t possibly introduce something like that with less than twenty hours to go and seriously expect anyone to care or welcome the consequences that plot would bring.

Only way it’ll happen is if E=D turns out to be true, since that contains things we’re already invested in.
  45. Tyrion Pimpslap,

Ah, I have such fond memories of the “Dorne sucked more! No, Iron Islands sucked more!! NO, Dorne sucked more!!!” flame wars of 2005……

At any rate, B&W figured out a way to have Dorne involve one of the main characters. Hoping that B&W also could figure out how to have the Iron Islands involve one of the main characters is just getting optimisitic to the point of foolishness!

  46. I’m curious. Where are Littlefinger and Sansa heading? They’ve had to go west from Runestone to arrive at The Crossroads Inn, which is on The Kingsroad. The other roads meeting at The Inn are the High Road (from the east), and the River Road (heading west).
Where is this East Road Brienne saw them on?
Given the geography of the area they’re in, with high hills behind them (from the still), that appears to confirm going east. Who knows? It could be anywhere.

Sansa does look pale in the still, which could be from a very long time in the saddle. Could it be because LF did that ‘Justice & Vengeance’ thing earlier? Is that a hint of where they are? The next major calling point is….?
Darry is close to The Inn, and Harrenhal is further south. Going east could bring you to Saltpans (for a sea journey?). West brings you to…. Fairmarket, Oldstones and Seagard. Heading further, in a northerly direction, and you’re at The Twins.

From Runestone to The Inn took an episode to cover. The Twins is a similar distance, by a map, which may equate to an episode. That sort of makes sense of LF’s speech, but not by the geography shown on screen.
So, did Brienne get the name of the road wrong? It may be one of those very small roads deemed insignificant for maps. Who knows?
I suppose I could be patient while Monday morning, at 02:00, when the next episode airs here (simulcast). If I miss that, it’s another 17 hours before the regular broadcast.

Then there’s that still of The Boltons, waiting in line, much like The Starks did when Robert’s party arrived way back when. It’s going to be quite an episode, I’m guessing.

  47. Al Swearengen:
Is it just me or do the helmets that they Bolton soldiers are wearing look like a single boob with a nipple on top?

And that could be where your boob quotient for the next episode comes from. Me on the other hand will get pics of some ugly dude named Dick. You will recognize him because he’ll be scratching his clothed ass.

  48. ZappaCreed,

I’m curious. Where are Littlefinger and Sansa heading?

    You must be new here….

    Future episode spoilers

she is marrying Ramsay and taking the role of fake Arya
  49. I don’t think Tommen is of age yet to consummate. I am also very interested in what Qyburn is writing. In the trailer roose bolton says something like “there will be consequences”. fingers crossed he’s talking about flaying the ironmen at moat cailin

  50. Josh:

It’s stated in S1 and S2 that women are of an age to marry and consummate as soon as they’ve had their period. Which means plenty of 12-y/o brides. No reason why a similar age shouldn’t hold for grooms.

  51. Probably mise-en-scene crackpot, but could that prominently featured ‘mirror’ to the left of Qyburn be the show’s version of a glass candle? Note the odd reflections and the suggestions of a magnification lens in the center. If Mel sees things in flames, will Qyburn see (and perhaps influence, a la the books’ Marwyn and Quaithe) things via the mirror, mirror not on the wall, but on his desk? Yeah, I know, it’s probably just a set-dressing prop, but if the show continues to conflate characters and events, a lot of things might be going on in Qyburn’s lab in episodes to come.

I suspect the show might continue to streamline and downplay the magical elements, but a part of me would enjoy seeing Sam unknowingly thwart Qyburn long distance via gizmos he rigs up from his research at the Wall’s library. Sam, Gilly, and Shireen staring at Qyburn through their ‘mirror’ while he stares back at them through his is the kind of ‘what if?’ suggestion that would justifiably get me bounced out of the GoT writer’s room, but hey, it’s what we Readers do, isn’t it?

Then again, considering where Sansa seems to be heading, are any ideas too far out?

  52. Chimeny,

So you’re judging a philosophical and political movement that has roughly been around since the end of the nineteenth century (even longer if you count proto-feminism) by a couple of videos people make on Youtube?

  53. Wimsey,

Threw yara , threw dany. I’m thinking maybe yara returns to the iron
Islands instead of deep wood motte in like epidose 5 ( sees the crows eye and becomes aware of her fathers death and the allegiance to euron ) maybe euron will do something like say victorion is on a mission to retrieve the dragon queen with the kingsmoot and yara decides to goto the motte to gain iron born loyalists than stannis comes across them on way to meet the boltons and recruits yara and her men for extra support against the boltons . That dazniks pit is In episode 9 —- and 10 they’ll show the iron born land at meereen and show khaleesi recruiting a huge khalssar – than have jorah doing the barriston winds speech to the rest of the unsullied and dany supporters than right as they get to the beach will see victorion in his kraken armor? Than that would be the end of this season so next year they’ll have the iron born story line streamlined – or they good have Jaquan Hagar tell arya he has to go on a mission , after her training and it’ll end with jaqen pushing balon of the bridge to Pyke and just wait to introduce them charectors next season – I can imagine them cutting victorion or the damphier- just not euron

  54. JamesL:
    ZappaCreed,

    Future episode spoilers

???? – Surely The Twins is closer to the Crossroads Inn than Winterfell, Heading there would be just over double the distance from The Inn, going north, than The Twins. Would you be advocating not paying a courtesy call with The Freys, who are the next major House bordering The Vale? Does that make sense of LF’s Justice & Vengeance speech, which looks like it’s in the vicinity of the still?

That wasn’t The Inn, looks different. It’s not The Inn at Crossroads, just an inn along the way.

  56. Rodrik the Reader,

I actually had the same thought (briefly) about that magnifying glass/mirror/whatever being used as the glass candle (only because of the flame seen in the center of it). I doubt that element ever gets added to the show, however. And if it were to be added, why not use the book’s sharp, twisted, ancient-looking design?

  57. Just noticed, what happened to the episode synopsis? Is

    “Arya sees the many-faced God”

no longer part of the 503 synopsis?

  58. ZappaCreed,

Yes, in terms of distance and location that would make sense. Unfortunately D&D’ s writing often does not.

Knowing their tendency to ‘jetpack’ they’ll be in Winterfell by the end of the episode.
