A Murder of Crows: Westerosi immersion

Now that we’ve settled into our new accommodations at Watchers on the Wall, and have welcomed many a face, both familiar and new, it’s time to get to one of the bigger issues at hand. One of the most undeniably alluring aspects of Game of Thrones – and, undoubtedly, one of the biggest reasons for the show’s immense success – has been its ability to so vividly depict a whole swath of environments, from the intimate to the epic.

King's Landing

So, naturally, the question must be asked: which is the most effective in transporting you to another time and place?

The North Remembers: September 2011

Raven LogoLet’s take a gander at September three years ago, and see what our community of Game of Thrones enthusiasts was up to then.

  • Season two was teased by the logo accompanied by a whisper of “The night is dark and full of terrors”. You can still watch it here.
  • Game of Thrones won Best Title Design at the Creative Arts Emmys. The first Emmy Award! The big one came of course a few days later when Peter Dinklage won an Emmy for Best Supporting Actor! What a great recognition for the show.
  • Neil Marshall was added as a director (what a move!), joining Alan Taylor, Alik Sakharov, David Petrarca, and David Nutter.
  • Season two casting continued, after some hints from George we found out Rorge was to be played by Andy Backwith, and Biter by Gerard Jordan. We also figured out that Anthony Morris was to play Tickler, and later Fintan McKeown was cast as Amory Lorch. Ian Whyte stepped into Gregor Clegane’s shoes for S2. Steven Cole was cast at Kovarro. Finally, our intrepid Rabbit found out Tony Way was going to play Dontos Hollard.
  • We were still figuring out what role Oona Chaplin was supposed to play exactly.
  • In mid-September a powerful storm interrupted the shoot at Ballintoy, where the scenes in Renly’s camp were shot. Much like these days, the prep in Dubrovnik was in full swing and then started in the third week of September, making the locals excited. Both King’s Landing scenes and Dany’s scenes in Qarth were shot there. It’s been three years already. At the end of the month the “Blackwater” episode started filming.
