Nikolaj Coster-Waldau and the Stark sisters are back in Belfast

Game of Thrones will begin filming of season 7 in Northern Ireland within the next couple weeks, and the actor sightings are growing every day.

Nikolaj Coster-Waldau was spotted yesterday in Belfast, the N.I. city that serves as the home base of production. He stopped to take a photo with a fan yesterday in the city, shown above.

A few more cast members were seen in Belfast, two of them out on the town shopping. Maisie Williams and Sophie Turner posed with the fan, who shared the photo online just a few hours ago:

Update: And Gwendoline Christie flew into town yesterday:

And Isaac Hempstead Wright tweeted just a half hour ago about being in Northern Ireland:

Of course Jason Momoa caused a stir online with his photos earlier this week. The actor was passing through Ireland and Northern Ireland, traveling with his family and touring the Guinness Factory. Another post-death Drogo return doesn’t seem likely- or if there is one, Momoa will probably be much more secretive about it! But as always, hope springs eternal since Momoa is beloved by everyone he works with, it seems.

In other news, there’s potential casting tidbits for speculation purposes floating around.

There are two notices posted online from the agency that handles extras for Game of Thrones in Northern Ireland. Because Extras NI avoids naming which series these roles are for, we can’t be 100% certain the parts are for GoT. However, we have heard of other extras being offered Game of Thrones work for these same dates, so it looks decently likely.

The first is for a newborn child:

The second is for men with missing teeth:

Make of that what you will.

After a long dry summer, we’re almost back into filming time. Autumn is coming, and for us, that’s a good thing!

Thanks to Maggie, NP, and AryaArya for their assistance!

  1. Do they do a read-through each year before filming? Maybe they are in Belfast for that, since Sophie is still a blonde and Maisie’s hair is black.
    Anyway, IT’S HAPPENING people!

  2. The baby casting call could be anything, but I am wondering if it could be for baby Aegon/if we are getting the sack of King’s Landing as a flashback. There’s a big part of me that hopes it isn’t, though…that would be brutal to watch.

  3. Rella,

Damn straight. That man just gets hotter. He was actually seen around Belfast quite a bit yesterday. Not that I was trolling for info or anything. Gwendoline Christie was on a flight to Belfast that ended up delayed. I think Emilia was at least back in the UK.

Table read time! That means that people out there other than D&D/GRRM/Cogman know what is happening in all of S7. Let the leaking begin!

  4. HotPinkLipstick,

I honestly don’t want any big leaks to happen this year. Filming spoilers are always welcome, but entire scenes and major plot points leaked are not (for me at least, since I won’t be able to resist reading them and doing this last year kinda diminished my excitement during particularly exciting S6 scenes).

  5. Isaac is also there according to his twitter.

Maisie was there last week as well. Maybe costume fittings. She would need some new costumes.

  6. Great news!
But you do realise ‘Northern Ireland’ is in ‘Ireland’ right? An appropriate line to use was Northern Ireland & Republic of Ireland, both of which is in Ireland.

  7. Perfect! The Olympics distracted me for a couple of weeks but now I’m thirsty for GoT news again.

I don’t even want to think about how long it will be before the premiere though

  8. Here we go!!! I am sure they are just starting the table read part of the process, but its exciting nonetheless.

And Jason momoa was talking about his get together with D&D for quite a while, I think be tweeted something like “see you guys in belfast in august” back when he was live tweeting & praising Dany in season 6. And I think its just an informal mixer, friends catching up. Not much to do with the show.

  9. That feel when all the Game of Thrones actors are back in Belfast and you’re trying to figure out a way to get through 10+ more months of anticipation.

    It’s kinda feels good though..

  11. So much fun to see things get started :-). I suspect it is table reads so far otherwise Sophie’s hair would be red.

  12. Rhaenys Stark,

I’m with you! Last season people kept on mentioning “king in the north” before episode 10 and I was thinking, “Why would Jon become that? Sansa is there and Bran is still alive.” And then it happened and I realized there were people who actually knew it was happening. It was semi-spoiled for me. I hope to avoid things like that this season. I’m gonna have to control myself to visit here as often as I did last year.

  13. Yay! And now our watch begins…

I’m always amazed that celebs get recognized out on the street. Other than Gwen’s height, I don’t think that I would recognize these people if I just walked past them.

  14. Sophie must’ve went straight from the set of “Huntsville” to NI. Her hair is still its natural blonde.

Most book readers knew that Jon was going to become KITN, not from filming spoilers but from the books. We have Robb’s will in play and Sansa is no where near WF. Only Rickon is in contention and the show killed him off.

  16. Lady Lemonheart,

Book Baby Aegon has Valyrian features and takes after his father. He had “fair hair” and though it’s possible that they may blur the lines here, to make it more clear that the child is half Dornish. That’s a good call as to who this baby could be.

There aren’t many other babies of note left that it could be. Unless Daenerys is having another vision of Rhaego (again, another fair haired baby although he was to have copper skin), but I don’t think it’s him.

  17. I love this news. Nikolaj, Sophie, Maisie, Gwendoline, and Isaac all in Belfast. The gang is starting to come together. I can’t wait for sightings of Kit and Emilia. And this year, Kit won’t have to hide.

The casting call for the mixed-race baby has me stumped. The filming dates are right around the corner, so I don’t think it’s a Northern scene. The only thing I can think of is a Dornish baby. Maybe it’ll be like in Meereen when Varys and Tyrion encountered the mother and baby in the streets. Maybe Dany will stop to greet some common folk after she lands and there’s a mother and baby in the crowd. *shrugs*

  18. SerNoName: Most book readers knew that Jon was going to become KITN, not from filming spoilers but from the books. We have Robb’s will in play and Sansa is no where near WF. Only Rickon is in contention and the show killed him off.

I read the books but I didn’t know that Jon would be KitN by episode 10. Before the season finale, Sophie was in WF and not “nowhere near WF”. Robb’s will is also not in play at all on the show.

  19. Now it begins!!

Is Kit still filming his movie in Canada or is he done with that for now, does anybody know?

The mixed race baby, if it is for GOT, is interesting. A Dornish baby? Since I am hoping that Essos is done with.

  20. Maisie and Sophie were also spotted at Red Hot Chili Peppers last night at Tennants Vital. Knew I should have gone ?

  21. Baby – Could be Dornish; the fact that the scenes are to be short in Northern Ireland and not in Spain suggests that if it is Dorne, we probably won’t be seeing the baby at the Water Gardens. Could also be Dothraki – if Daenerys has taken her entire Khalasar with her, perhaps one of the women has a child on the ship or soon after landing? Given there are only around 13 episodes left, Daenerys is unlikely to spend a long time travelling to Westeros on screen; at most I would think we might see a stop-off at Volantis (already established as a stopping off point between Meereen and Westeros as Varys/Tyrion and Yara/Theon stopped there). Or, I wonder if this could relate to someone Sam and Gilly meet at Oldtown? In an inn, perhaps? In terms of Rhaegar’s children, Rhaenys took after her mother and was of Dornish appearance, and Aegon was more Valyrian in coloring (like Rhaegar) – which would suggest that if the casting call is for his child, it fits more for Rhaenys.

Male – This could be one of a number of locations. Given the missing teeth perhaps we are looking for someone suffering from either the after-effects of a fight or from lack of proper nutrition and vitamins? There was a fighter due to be cast from one of the previous casting calls, but I cannot remember if the dates match up. Without information on what the main cast filming schedule is like, it is hard to try and figure out which location both of these calls apply to.

The dates for both these casting calls are similar – while multiple units shoot at the same time and therefore there is no guarantee that both calls relate to the same scene or location, it is not impossible. Yes, there is no racial stipulation on the second one, but locations like Oldtown, a bustling port city, would require a variety of races. And the fact that season six established the possibility of viewing events from the past, there is always the chance that one or both of the calls relates somehow to a vision that Bran has.

  22. Sam: I read the books but I didn’t know that Jon would be KitN by episode 10. Before the season finale, Sophie was in WF and not “nowhere near WF”. Robb’s will is also not in play at all on the show.

Yes, but they are still following the book plot arcs for the main characters. Which means if Jon becomes KITN in the book, he does so in the show as well. Not Sansa who has nothing to do with the North story in the books. Which is why Jon was awkwardly pronounced KITN on the show despite doing nothing to deserve it and with true heir Sansa sitting right there. They have to follow the book story beats for the main characters even if they neglect to write in things like Robb’s will.

As a book reader I was pretty damn sure that Sansa was not going to be Queen and that Jon was going to get proclaimed as King because that’s what I expect to see in the books with Robb’s will. I don’t need filming spoilers to tell me that.

  23. So Nikolaj is in the city, but Lena and Halfthor aren’t? What about Jerome Flynn, Indira Varma… who will he interact with?

    Aarrgh need more sightings.

e: why has no enterprising local fan mounted cameras around the entrance to the studios yet to see which actors come in together to predict who has scenes with whom!

  24. Anyone else find it vaguely weird that an Italian tourist is in Belfast? Times have massively changed for the better there in my lifetime!

  25. lalla:
what does “mixed-race” mean, in terms of looks?

Well strictly speaking grammatically it means someone who has two parents of differing races – it could be a black parent and an Asian parent or a white parent and an Asian parent but in the UK it tends to be used for someone who has one white parent and one white black parent.

  26. SerNoName,

Jon did plenty to deserve it and Sansa was a true heir to nothing because her father was not a king.Only Winterfell is hers in the absence of Bran obviously. And I don’t think omitting Robb’s will is on them.We are two books after that and the will still hasn’t been mentioned or come in play.Maybe GRRM should have been like hey maybe you should include that because this is how it’s gonna go down but in any case it still worked

  27. SerNoName:

Good for you that you were able to correctly speculate Jon would be KitN specifically by episode 10. I didn’t speculate that, even after reading the books (and certainly didn’t want to know it was going to happen and that it would happen in season 6, episode 10). Obviously, I was referring to those who actually did know (not merely speculated) it was going to happen and posted about it. There was even someone who said something like, wouldn’t it be nice if after the TOJ scene it transitions to Jon and then he gets declared the KitN? When it happened exactly like that I knew it wasn’t mere speculation but was actually a “sub-spoiler”. But hey, I’m not blaming anybody. All I said was I’d probably (probably is the operative word here) visit the site next season less often than before to avoid spoilers or “speculations” that would turn out exactly as the actual scenes.

  28. Nilolaj and Sophie and Maisie seem to be willing to be pleasant to their fans – now I know they are reasonably well known rather than A listers but it’s nice to know they’re not too snobby to talk/interact with their fans.

I’m one of those who has to type my online alias when I come here now (I’ve checked my Chrome settings and according to them I have the up-to-date version so I don’t know why). When the site comes up with suggestions to complete the necessary boxes when posting as well as “Dame of Mercia” the wording “Dame of Merica” comes up so I must have made a typing blooper in that box at one time when coming here (I’ve made loads of typing bloopers over the time I’ve visited here in the comments box!).

  29. Dee Stark:
    Sam,

that happened with me as well. people were so sure about jon being KITN LOL I was like why??? hahaha

You know, Dee, I missed that entirely….lol. I’ve even read the books, duh. Of course it’s been a thousand years since I read them. Happy Lurking, waiting for news!:)

  30. BTW Friends at the Wall, today is officially the last day of summer and winter is indeed coming. I’m going to miss being able to look forward to April knowing GOT will be back and it’s a sign of spring. Usually I start rewatching the previous seasons after Christmas holiday, but this year I’d be done WAY TO SOON. It’s going to be a long stretch until next August when the show comes back:(

  31. Dame of Mercia: Well strictly speaking grammatically it means someone who has two parents of differing races – it could be a black parent and an Asian parent or a white parent and an Asian parent but in the UK it tends to be used for someone who has one white parent and one white black parent.

well, yes of course :-), but I think they meant some kind of look. Why would they care about one’s parentage? It won’t show through the screen.
I don’t think for example that my collegue’s children would qualify, despite being mixed race (they have black skin).

  32. Dame of Mercia:

They are – but I’d be far too timid to speak to them let alone ask them to be in a pic with me ( not that I carry a camera or phone with camera anyway!).

You might be a bit lucky the suggestions doesn’t come up with Dame of ‘Merica f*** yeah! 😉

  33. Dee Stark:
    Elizabeth,

    is it coming in august??
    ?

That was D&D’s best guess was late summer of next year…ugh….that’s a YEAR away…too long and then it’s a shorter season than normal.

  34. HotPinkLipstick:
Nikolaj. Yum. Looking good in that shirt. Better if he takes it off…

    Bwahaha – shameless objectification… go!

But anyway yes he is a handsome devil. And unlike a lot of the actors, we actually did get our wish… once. I wouldn’t want to be one of those stupid fawning, tripping over their words fans but I’m not sure I would be if I had the opportunity to meet any of these folks!

  35. lalla: well, yes of course :-), but I think they meant some kind of look. Why would they care about one’s parentage? It won’t show through the screen.
I don’t think for example that my collegue’s children would qualify, despite being mixed race (they have black skin).

They did the same thing with the Dothraki and Lazhereen actors back in S1. The casting call was (at least in part) for people of mixed race. So, if you want an idea of what they ended up with (which gives some indication what they were going for) go watch S1. Which was, I guess basically, brown-skinned people of any racial or ethnic background?

  36. Men with missing teeth?
My first hunch was that it would somehow involve Cersei, but since the notice doesn’t specify race… Daenerys’ army?

  37. Elizabeth,

    WTF
why do they need so long?????
with less episodes, it means less shooting….

I mean usually they start in july and the season is ready for viewing in april… sooooooooooooooo>? that’s ten months.
technically they should be ready in june.

    #selfishfan

  38. I keep thinking we might see The Sack of King’s Landing (hence the mixed race baby). But it could be anything.

The man with missing teeth makes me think of Cersei’s storyline. Maybe Qyburn experiments on him or she has someone tortured.

    SerNoName,

Oh please. Jon did plenty of things to deserve it and since Ned wasn’t king of anything, Sansa isn’t the heir. She’s only entitled to Winterfell until Bran gets back.

  39. Dee Stark,

It’s because they’re going to do a lot of post production work for the winter scenes, dragons (and whatever Dany and Euron will be up to).

  40. Dee Stark:

I think it’s possible that although it’s only 7 episodes rather than 10, those 7 episodes are going to take as long to film as 10 episodes did previously, given the content. I’m guessing mind you. I don’t think there has been any definitive statement as to when it will air next year.
If they need more wintery weather they may not be sure how filming will pan out so won’t commit themselves at the moment. I do hope it’s not as far away as August though ?

  41. QueenofThrones,

Jaime and Cersei never get naked in their scenes. They save Jaime’s naked scenes for those with Brienne. I have high hopes for a second Jaime and Brienne bath scene, this time it’s sexy.

Irish Thrones tweeted something about activity on the Riverrun set. https://twitter.com/IrishThrones/status/768921623374262273
    The castle facade still exists.

At this point, I think they would just be working on set dressing and not actual filming yet.

  42. I get the feeling that with Cersei ruling in KL, the people are not going to fare very well (if she survives for very much longer). We all know how empathetic she is to the “little people”….NOT! Toothless man may be a survivor of the inferno at the Sept OR a Flea Bottom resident left to starve by the queen. That’s my first thought.

I’m sure I’ll have many more thoughts before the day is out! 🙂

Happy for the sightings in NI….looking forward to every bit of news that WotW can publish!

  43. HotPinkLipstick,

Yes, that’s true. In addition to practical reasons, I think it’s meant to represent that while Cersei and Jaime’s relationship is sexual, it lacks the intimacy that a healthy relationship should have. They don’t trust each other enough to be either physically or emotionally vulnerable (naked) together.

re: Jaime and Brienne – I’m thinking by the time we get there it may be that one or both actors will have no nudity in their contract. NCW did just renegotiate after all. But the first scene already demonstrated the physical intimacy difference so we’ll survive I guess…

  44. lalla: well, yes of course :-), but I think they meant some kind of look. Why would they care about one’s parentage? It won’t show through the screen.
I don’t think for example that my collegue’s children would qualify, despite being mixed race (they have black skin).

I worked with somebody who was friends with a couple where the husband and wife were of different races (can’t recall which was round) – anyway the white parent went to collect the child [who was very young] from school and was told he/she couldn’t possibly be the child’s parents – so presumably the other partner had to come to explain the situation.

  45. QueenofThrones,

Nikolaj has done full frontal before and has not shown any strong adversity to nudity and it doesn’t need to be all the goods anyway. Gwendoline Christie has also posed fully nude and hasn’t expressed any desire for a no nudity clause. She’s very comfortable with her body.

All the really need is naked arms, legs, sides and backs for a sex scene.

  46. Sam,

Well, even if they had not read any of the leaks, book readers could take an educated guess that it may take place since in the books that is a real possibility, perhaps he won’t get there in the same way but it has been set in motion. Besides, Jon has been called King Crow and has been associated with Kings so often that sooner or later one knew it would happen.

  47. Applying:
Seven hells it hurts! I just smashed out my front teeths. Hope it will be worth it.

It did cross my mind to wonder if any out-of-work actors in NI would be desperate enough to knock a couple of their own teeth out. Was hoping not.

  48. Flayed Potatoes,

Ned wasn’t king but his son Robb was, and by rule true born siblings come before bastards.

The show sped through any explanation of that with Jons coronation for either time constraints or to make “good TV” with conflict to come between Jon and Sansa.

  49. Lady Lemonheart:
The baby casting call could be anything, but I am wondering if it could be for baby Aegon/if we are getting the sack of King’s Landing as a flashback. There’s a big part of me that hopes it isn’t, though…that would be brutal to watch.

But Aegon looked very much Targaryen, not mixed race. My guess is that this is not GoT related at all.

  50. nipplesonanbreastplate,

I agree. I think he will be a flea-bottom resident or maybe someone from the Riverlands (if she decides to subjugate them to the crown by force, similar to Tywin’s crackdown of them in Seasons 1 and 2). I think, as well as trying to stop Daenerys, The Tyrrells and the Martells, Cersei will be out to assert her control and will possibly go after Sansa as well).
