New pics from Game of Thrones set at St. John’s Fortress, and Dubrovnik begins its King’s Landing transformation

got1

Filming for Game of Thrones season 5 has well and truly begun in Šibenik, Croatia, with scenes being filmed there yesterday and today.

As images were shared by various sites during the construction of the set at St. John’s Fortress, many speculated on what it could be used to film. The following new images offer us a much clearer view on the type of scene(s) we could be seeing there in the fifth season.

Minor spoilers after the cut.

Sibenik.in has shared the above image and the following one. In them we can see Essosi extras, both noble masters and slaves/sellswords/pit-fighters.

Sources on Facebook have also confirmed that Dubrovnik city is once again undergoing preparation for outdoor King’s Landing scenes, with stacks of hay, branches and woven wood being used as props.

Cian: I think the costuming of the extras at St. John’s Fortress pretty much confirms the popular speculation about what’s being filmed there. What do you think?

  1. I can’t get the spoiler tag to work, SPOILERS!!! – they work now.

So the guy that took some of the pics above said on facebook that

he saw Peter Dinklage and Iain Glen on set, he couldn’t take any pics though. It looks like that set isn’t just a training ground for the pit fighters.
  2. Which ones are the Pit fighters?

Stacks of hay and wood outside Dubrovnik/King’s Landing? could those be things carried by sparrows?

  3. Balerion The Cat,

Isn’t Tyrion involved in an almost pit-fight in ADWD? Maybe they’re trimming the portion where he’s owned by Yezzan zo Qaggaz, and just having he and Jorah purchased to be pit fighters.
  4. The woman in the top pic could easily be the pit fighter Barsena Blackhair who in the books at least

gets eaten by Drogon after being gored by the boar she fought in the pits.
  5. I was at the fortress today.
They filmed a big scene with extras and main characters.

I promised not to disclose anything, so unfortunately I can’t say anything more.

The woman in the first picture is part of the crew and no extra.

  6. Shylah,

Well then… What’s the point in casting Yezzan?

    My guess:

Yezzan will be the one in charge of the fighting pits in the show and he will be the one nagging at Dany to reopen them rather than Hizdahr. When she agrees, he starts smuggling slaves in for the Pit fights in the grand reopening (which would be against Dany’s laws- that only willing fighters can be placed in the Pit). Then that Luther dude takes over Tyrion and Jorah’s ship and sells them to Yezzan. The big question now is if Yunkai will be involved at all, or if the big battle of Meereen will be scrapped in the show in favor of some sort of inner-city civil war.
  7. jentario

they mentioned Yunki and how they got back to enslave people again and she send Darrio to them so I dont think this is all was for nothing

what do you think will happen with Astapor and the butcher king ?

  8. Gorshak,

So jelous! Maybe this is too much to ask and if you can’t answer don’t worry, but I’m really curious about it… Did you notice something new/really distinctive in any of the main characters faces?

  9. Balerion The Cat:
    TheTouchOfFrost,

This makes me think: were there any Dothraki in season 4?

Yes, there definitely are some. I’ve just finished a rewatch of all 4 seasons, nearly… just “The Children” to watch tonight. As Greenjones says, there’s usually a few Dothraki extras in Dany’s scenes… Two holding her and Missandei’s horses as they look out over the sea just before Daario brings the local flowers to show her, in “Two Swords”; some flanking the throne or standing against the walls in the Meereenese throne room after Dany’s taken the city. That’s just two I can definitely recall… there’s likely a few other times they’re present. No dialogue from any of them though, I don’t think, just extras dotted around.

  10. Normally I’d take Dance’s comment to mean he’ll be simply playing his corpse for the funeral but since we know absolutely that there will be a Cersei flashback (which I am guessing could very well be the season cold open), it’s entirely possible that Tywin makes a brief appearance interacting with the young Cersei there. Just a thought.

It seems like a pretty big waste to be able to score Charles Dance for some time to shoot your new season and all you’re going to do with him is have him play dead for a scene or two.

  11. Abyss,

    Either that or…

He’ll show up in the young Cersei/Maggy the Frog flashback, possibly at the end where he’s call out to Cersei revealing who she is and that it is a flashback. Or they could do this and the funeral in one episode and utilise the actor.
  12. Abyss,

It’s more likely to be the cold open than a Bran vision. I don’t think he’d see that particular scene if he were looking back at things. A lot of people have guessed it will be her dream before she wakes up and the events of her first AFFC chapter play out.

  13. Abyss,

I also hope it won’t be cheesy, but I think if they used Bran’s visions it would be. He has no connection to Cersei and it would feel too out of place to me.
  14. Greenjones,

I’m 99% sure that’s how the season 5 will start. A dream. Two kids. A castle on a rock on the distance. Maggy stuff happens. Cersei’s friend calls her “Cersei.” Big shock: it’s Cersei! She wakes up. Someone’s waking her up. It’s Meryn Trant! “Your father is dead, your Grace”… but maybe with more grace. Cut to the Tower of the Hand. Cersei talking to Jaime. Charles Dance’s beautiful face. Then Trant or someone informs them Tyrion is gone from his cell. It was Tyrion! Cersei angry-shock face. BOOM, cut to intro credits, cool music, then Tywin’s funeral and Charles Dance’s beautiful face again.

  15. Greenjones,

As long as they explain the flashback in some way, I’m fine with it. I just don’t like the whole “And now for a random flashback, ladies and gentleman!” thing. 🙂

  16. Abyss,

They’ve made a point of not doing flashbacks till now, so its likely they’ll only have this the once because it works for 501’s cold open. They don’t usually show non-Bran dreams either so it will be a special case anyways.

  17. I doubt they would rehire him just for the funeral. I expect him to return in some form of flashback to explain what happened during robert’s rebellion.

  18. Of the Night,

Good point. I don’t think it has to be cheesy because of that, but it very well could be.

I think the flashback being in Cersei’s dream is a good bet, they did something similar with Sansa.
  19. davy,

How is that remotely necessary? They are cramming two books into a season. There’s not time to put in random flashbacks that belong to a spin-off, not to Game of Thrones itself. If we ever get flashbacks, it will be through visions (Bran) or dreams, not straight flashbacks, and they will be limited —so only important stuff. Crucial stuff. And even then, I think that may be a stretch; we may never get any flashbacks at all, except a cold-open with Cersei and vague visions with Bran.

  20. Ser Florian: Yes, there definitely are some. I’ve just finished a rewatch of all 4 seasons, nearly… just “The Children” to watch tonight. Glad there’s still a few knocking about seeing as the poor bastards went through so much with her. The fact her Bloodriders are her loyalist soldiers should still be apparent I think. Poor old Rakharo.
Quite enjoyed the scenes in season 2 when they were trying to rob the party in Qarth!

  21. Luka Nieto:
    Greenjones,

I like that idea, but even more I like the idea of

the bells waking her and, given what she was just dreaming about, having her think, at first, it’s Tommen who is dead…maybe even saying his name. Of course, she quickly discovers it isn’t Tommen who is dead, but Tywin (not sure how). I think, though, that giving her a moment to believe it’s Tommen would do an even better job of setting the stage for her downward spiral and give her an even greater impetus to send Jamie to go get Myrcella.
  22. Luka Nieto,

    Nymeria Warrior Queen,

I like both of these ideas, but the cold opens thus far have been fairly short (S1, 1:02; S3, 3:11; S4, 1:42). Unless they end up changing the format to have a more extensive scene, I’m betting it will cut to credits as soon as Cersei wakes up…and then segue right into the aftermath in KL & the possibilities y’all are discussing.

  23. Why Cersei for a cold open? She will have lot of time the whole season…
I thought they could give us a presentation of Doran Martell via a conversation with Oberyn before the Viper left for King’s Landing.
Or Balon’s Death with the faceless assassin retaking the face of Tom Waschila at the end of the scene…

  24. Happy Birthday to the man, the myth, the legend…LOL…George RR Martin! Cheers, huzzah and many more to come!

  25. uff,

Yes, I rather see a “previously on” ending with Melisandre and her leeches, then HBO,

then, the death of Balon Greyjoy… This will be a far better opening than Maggy the Frogg.

The problem is the first scene after the intro… some Greyjoy-related (YarAsha reading a letter) or a scene where Tywin’s corpse is present. Sweet dreams… it seems almost true that Maggy will open the next season, everybody wants to see Cersei at the moment when she realizes that Tyrion fled.

However, maybe 5×02 will open with Greyjoy’s business.

  26. Greenjones:

Out of all the possible flashbacks and backstory (not via exposition/sexposition) they could do on this show, they choose this one?

Just to predict that Cersei will lose her children? It seems like that could be played out in realtime to great effect.

D&D must have some killer insight here….regarding the Mad King perhaps?

  27. OtherAndrew,

It says “filming episodes“, so we’ll see her at least in two episodes. A maid or a whore would be my guess. But yeah, she’s clearly dornish. Or meereenese.

  28. jentario,

I don’t think so since she shot in Belfast before that casting call came out. Also that’s a one-off character and this girl’s CV says she appears in “episodes” rather than just one.

  29. Greenjones,

Alright. September 8th was when filming moved to Diocletian Palace, so this actress must be playing a Meereenese. So far, it seems the Dornish cast is rather full, but Meereen is lacking a couple of major players from the books, most notably… The Green Grace.

Fingers crossed! She was one of the more interesting parts of the relatively bland Meereen arc in the books. It also makes sense that she’d shoot most of her scenes in Belfast in the Palace of the Graces set and in Dany’s quarters.

  30. jentario,

Yes, I for one would enjoy a Meereenese storyline that is more akin to the King’s Landing storyline; more court politics with interesting characters. Now that Daenerys is ruling instead of conquering, her story has more time for that sort of thing. Or at least enemies with faces and names we know, instead of random slavers. Create some dramatic conflict.

  31. OtherAndrew,

Shame as she would be a perfect Arianne too.

Ok wild, shot in a dark theory here! What if Arianne is going by the alias Clea whilst in Pentos? Then next season she can be revealed to be a princess of Dorne and she’s already in a position to interact with Young Griff if he is put in too and they can strike at Storm’s End. I can dream anyway.
  32. TheTouchOfFrost,

Clea won’t be appearing in more than one episode though. She just has the one scene. Whoever Meena is playing it’s not a one-off though she probably won’t have the kindof screentime that someone sharing a one-on-one scene with Dinklage would get.

  33. jentario,

The Green Grace is about 80 years old, and I see no obvious reasons for changing that so drastically. Her character would not make much sense with a young actress, since she is all about wisdom, experience and etc (btw: I really liked the green grace and hope that they do not cut her entirely). But the actress is indeed probably playing someone mereneese, since, as you pointed out, her tweets match the mereenese filming in croatia.

  34. RandomSand,

I don’t remember the Green Grace being old… I always imagined her as a woman in her 40s or 50s, and I can see the show not specifying her age in the casting call to assure that the best actress for the role gets cast. But you might be right, I don’t know.

  35. Greenjones,

Who’s to say she is appearing in more than one episode? She’s been to two seperate shoots but they could both be for the same episode? In fact with one being Belfast and one Croatia then it’ plausible it’s the same episode only an inside and an outside scene? If she’s more than an extra then I can’t see who else she’d play…unless they’re throwing in yet more whores!

  36. I’m already in touch with HBO about Rayann, we’ll see if they’re willing to officially confirm/deny casting in any sort of role.

And cover your spoilers, as usual!

  37. Maybe they flipped arianne and frogboys roles. You could consolidate a lot of stuff if she was already in essos

  38. jentario,

I always pictured her old, but I was not sure, so I looked it up: http://awoiaf.westeros.org/index.php/Galazza_Galare#cite_note-Radwd23.7B.7B.7B3.7D.7D.7D-1 Not 80 then, but nearly. I could see her being portrayed by someone with 40 or 50, but I think it’s unlikely that they cast her in her 20s. (Honestly, regardless of age, I would love to see her on screen, even if it was a single-scene type of role).

    TheTouchOfFrost,
It really bothers me that they simply forgot about Quaithe. Albeit having a very small role she was a character that really stood out for me while reading the books, so if they decide to bring her back I would be extremely happy.
(This is not thaaat spoilery but I covered it anyways, who knows if a curious unsullied decides to look things up 😉 )

  39. jentario,

Why, Nina likes casting unknowns, look at all the other great choices she has made. Her page even mentions episodes (plural). I can only think of a young Grren Grace, she has a youthful Ms Loren vibe.

  40. tyjon,

She can be anyone, even Meereenese lady #2 with one line… Don’t jump to that conclusion (especially since there really isn’t much room for Arianne in the show after the changes they’ve made with Trystane being heir and all)

  41. tyjon,

As condescending as this sounds, I honestly weep for the people who still hold out any hope for Arianne. Young Griff and the Gryejoy uncles are still technically in the air, since we’ve heard nothing about them. At all. But also nothing that confirms they are cut, either. Technically. I don’t expect them to appear, but they might. Arianne, however? The minute she wasn’t shown alongside the rest of the Dornish cast, and Trystane was officially described as the heir to Doran, people should have accepted she was cut.

  42. jentario,

Aye but she was introduced and put into the viewers consciousness. They probably had plans for her but may have changed their minds. Does seem odd to only introduce her like that for a plot drive that could easily have been done another way.

    RandomSand,

I was always intrigues by her motivations and look forward to,hopefully, finding out more about her in the books.

    LukaNieto,

I don’t think it’s unreasonable for people to hold out hope that a character they like still might appear. Although it’s unlikely…who knows. There have been bigger changes than bringing in characters in a slightly different way/late.

  43. LukaNieto,

I’m not saying that you are wrong here. In fact I would put my money on the actress not playing Arianne for the exact reasons you brought up.
That said, she could still play a show version of Arianne. Of cause if Trystane being the air to Doran is true (and I don’t have any reason to believe it isn’t atm) then one could argue that a version of Arianne who isn’t the crown princess to Dorne isn’t really Arianne anymore. I don’t think I would necessarily agree, but it is a valid point.

  44. StandOzone,

How is she perfect for Arianne? Have you even seen her act? Arianne isn’t just a pretty face, which I assume you agree with if you like the character. So… why is she “perfect” for Arianne? Cause she has the looks? That’s not saying much.

  45. tyjon,

Hmm.. I wonder why she wasn’t cast as a Sand Snake instead… If she’s a dancer then it likely means she could pull off some very cool fighting choreography, and training in multiple accents is perfect for Dorne.

Oh well. I’m sure the cast Sand snakes will do a great job.

  46. TheTouchOfFrost,

Right, she might be a pit fighter then.

And that makes sense. First we see her in that small pit, then she may be in the same camp with Tyrion and then we see her fight and be eaten by Drogon at Daznak’s.

  47. Gravemaster,

Ahhh well pieced together! Have we found our Barsena Blackhair?
On the surface I think she would still make a better Nym Sand (or our looking like cut Arianne) but she could make the female pit fighter work.
