Activity in Girona, Spain hasn’t slowed down today as Game of Thrones works to convert a street into a medieval marketplace.

XipTV has a video report from the city where Carrer de Ferran el Catòlic has been busy, not just with production but with locals and tourists stopping by to see the street be transformed for the sixth season of Game of Thrones.

Diaridegirona also has more photographs today of the set in progress. Additionally, locals have snapped a few photos, offering us a closer looks at some of the props that may provide a hint at what location the site will be in season 6.

  1. Okay I think I’m changing my tune. I was thinking Braavos or a Westerosi city (King’s Landing, Oldtown), but they are all too “Western” for the props we’re seeing here, unless I’m very much mistaken. The circular barrels, the geometrically patterned plates… Doesn’t it look more clasically “Eastern” or even African? So maybe it’s some other Free City, or even Volantis itself again? Thoughts?

  2. The Water Knight,

It does look more like Meereen than Braavos, doesn’t it? I’m willing to bet it’s either one of the southern Free Cities (probably Volantis) or a city in Slaver’s Bay (probably Meereen.)

    igorcarvalho,

Isn’t Oldtown rich, though? This marketplace looks way too worn-down.

  3. Mine is the Hairy:
    HODOR!! Yes, I made it
    EDIT: No, i didn´t :´(

I love everything about this site, except this annoying behaviour.

Can’t wait to see how Girona pans out, and whether any of us come April 2016 will go HEY I REMEMBER THAT BIT ON WOTW!

  4. Certainly looks pretty tattered. Could it be a Sparrow encampment in KL? Otherwise, I’m going with Braavos. I imagined Oldtown to be nicer…cleaner maybe…more highbrow somehow…

If this level of access to shooting sites continues, we’re going to have no trouble seeing actors in action, so we’ll know soon enough! Great job, WotW and all you Wallies out there in Spain!

  5. Are they just letting people through the set so they can snap pictures? Has HBO just given up on the whole concept of “security”?

  6. Ravyn,

No, but closing off an area completely is a lot of effort and can result in all sorts of problems. You do that for the time when you actually film stuff, not for set preparation unless the spoilers are massive.

People can go in and out of their houses and they can’t tell them not to take pictures.

  8. Ravyn,

Probably…who cares? The camera tells a whole different story in it’s own right when shot with direction and actors than what people see just walking by….I’m sure it will be all blocked off once they start filming.

  9. Abyss,

And given that 2X posters come up with X ideas about what these shots represent, it is not like they are giving away too much.

  10. My page a day calendar quote for 27-August:

A hound will die for you, but never lie to you. And he’ll look you straight in the face.

  11. Abyss,
    Loolaa,

Though you’re right and the area will be secured while filming, at least some of the actors are sure to be spotted in town, as they always are —And then we’ll know where this marketplace set is supposed to be: Dinklage means Meereen, Williams means Braavos, Bradley means Oldtown, etc.

  12. Luka Nieto,

But we also have to keep in mind that there is only so much security that will be tolerated by the locals. Yes, this is great for the local economy, but the worst thing that production crews can do is start acting like they own the place.

Moreover, what does it matter if we know which city this is supposed to be? It gives away next to nothing about the plot and even less away about the story.

  13. Wimsey,

Because it gives us all something to speculate upon during the off season. I know that I am hungry for any little tidbit of information. But I have noticed that the “location” posts get much less in the comments than the “sightings/cast” posts.

    Missed ya Wimsey.

  14. JCDavis,

oh, I agree that we all hunger for tidbits: and now more than ever given that none of us know what is happening next or what next year’s story is.

My point is that even knowing where this set represents does not tell us much. Even if this is, say, Volantis, then we really are little (if any) the wiser for it. Now, it it were a scene of (say) Arya pledging Needle to Danny in Volantis, now that would be something: but so far they have not let anything comparable to that slip.

Oh, and good to see (? Read) you again!
