Sue the Fury: The trailer is jam-packed with amazing shots! It’s a big step up from the first trailer. I’m off to screencap and analyze it to bits.

  1. Yes! YEEESS!! So glad to see a new trailer. I think I might prefer this to the first one actually, mostly because I’m glad they have shown more Stannis and the Boltons… and this makes it look more intense than the first one.

  2. Seven hells!!! So I guess this pretty much confirms Sansa storyline this year, the theories were correct indeed and I just love it!

  3. It’s the 2016 calendar that will have a TWoW scene, not the 2015 one which has been out for months. But oddly, I can’t place this scene either from earlier in the books. Hmm.

  4. Im actually surprised at how bad ass they made stannis look in this trailer

has hasn’t looked this awesome since seaon 2 lol

  5. Best trailer yet for this season!

    2 questions!

    1) Is that Myranda with Ramsay? Could it be Fake Arya? I really want this subplot to happen, my favorite story from aDoD!

    2) Why was Selyse on the floor? What could possibly be happening? She was never in real danger in the books.

  6. My guess on the Sansa thing is that she is going to take over the role of Manderly and pretty much be the face of northern conspiracy. I dont think it will be revealed who she is until towards the end of the season. My guess is the Boltons will just think she is LFs niece Alayne.

  7. Not much Dorne play. I have a feeling there will be a Dorne emphasis in another trailer closer to the season. This one was the big-splash, get-excited-again trailer, so it focused on stuff people will already know. Although there was a lot of the Faith in there, and I loved what I saw.

  8. Well, well. Looks like Loras is really taking over some of Marg’s part in season 5.

He even seems to get a mini trail by faith already.

My baby is really pissed off again. Either somebody said something mean about Renly or made a “yo sista”-joke.

Olenna, Marg and Cersei sitting in the background like dead chicken is a bit curious. Hey, the kitten king is there too.

Oh, and Brienne gets the WINTER IS HERE!11!! scene (snow in the Riverlands). Nice.

  9. My only concern with the new images is Melisandre seemingly leaving Castle Black with Stannis…

  10. Ohhhhh my god… this is hands down the best trailer we’ve gotten for any season, right!? So so excited

  11. Is the HBONow subscription just limited to US residents only or available for international subscribers?

  12. The action scenes this year look absolutely incredible. The cinematography and the choreography are simply stunning to behold.

First shot of the Waif at 1:22? It’s probably a stretch given that she’s being shot from the side, but does anyone happen to recognize the actress?

  13. Iwon’twatchitIwon’tIwon’tIwon’t I’m supposed to be studying and I don’t want to be spoiled on more awesome stuff!!!

  14. The Sansa in Winterfell stuff is worrying. She could detract from what is already a good storyline up there. Hope they pull it off but at this point in time it still seems non-sensicle.

  15. Trailer slayed me! Genuinely got thrills watching it, loved the Dany voiceover, recounting all the houses in contention. Stannis looked menacing, also love hearing Roose speak.

Was that Sansa lighting a candle in the company of her ancestors? WOW! Still a bit sceptical about her arc, but there’s some beauty in not knowing how it’ll play out.

  16. My question, where the hell is Sweet Robin? Did Sansa pawn him off on Anya Waynwood so she could go on vacation up North?

  17. Does “HBO continues to be in discussions with its existing network of distributors and new digital partners to offer HBO NOW” mean they’re trying to get deals done with Amazon and Google? Cuz this one is on the Google play train

  18. TheTouchOfFrost,

I’m a healthy skeptic as well, but I have hat in hand. But the trailer is pretty damn good. It doesn’t look good for many characters. Does Brienne save Pod?

  19. Holy shit! That is one spectacular trailer! Much better than the first one. I can’t stop rewatching!

Sansa is in Winterfell. Shit. Don’t know what to think.
  20. Awesome trailer. I am intrigued by the scene of Sansa lighting candles in the crypts. Dany’s “wheel” speech has improved. Lots of Daario which is a good thing.

  21. YESSSSSSSS TORMUND! THIS IS WHAT I’M TALKING ‘BOUT!!!!! Give them hell, babe!

If you gotta go, go out with a bang.

KHALLEEEEEEEEESSSSIIIIIIIIIIII! Drogon / Dany scene looks quite awesome.

Dillane rocks all his shots. The time to look bad ass pissed and tighten those jaws has come! Beware all ye who face The True King of Westeros.

  22. This cost is LESS than it costs to just get HBO from a cable company. That’s NUTS! I feel like I’m getting hosed at the current price.

  23. This trailer is nuts. In a good way. (Thank you for the HQ You-Tube!)

Now I really want to know what Brienne and Sansa are up to. (Cigars to the Sansa-returns-to-Winterfell predictors, congrats!)

Tyrion finally sees a dragon. . .and he likes it. 🙂

And Margaery doesn’t seem to be enjoying being queen. At all.

    Can’t wait for S5!

. . .the new season of the Emmy®-winning True Detective with Vince Vaughn, Colin Farrell and Rachel McAdams;. . .

Slightly OT, I’d really like to see Rory McCann get a starring role in this series.

  24. I’d say it’s a contender for best trailer, this and the season 2 “Seven Devils” trailer.

  25. Hollyoak,

That’s from last year’s calendar and as far as I can tell, is an illustration of the “Mhysa” scene.

Or to put it another way, AngryGOTFAN is trolling.

Trailer is awesome though (although I’m worried about Sansa’s plotline). Dany’s “break the wheel” line is way, way better in context.

  26. where are now all those non belivers who tought Sansa wouldnt go to Winterfell but spend a season on AFFC/DWD inspired filler material going down a cliff for 5 episodes?

  27. Lots of great stuff from this trailer. I tried to piece together new info we have learned from this by storyline:

Jon: mostly just confirmation of what we already knew. You can’t see anyone besides Tormund accompanying him to Hardhome but that doesn’t mean there won’t be more known characters there. Looks like he’s talking to Olly at CB when he gives the “Winter is coming” speech.

Stannis: Quick shot of him mounted up and looking like he’s ready to march on Winterfell. Also a shot of Mel looking worriedly at something at CB and the strange shot of a distraught Selyse on the ground which could be something to do with Shireen or maybe something entirely different.

Winterfell: Sansa’s there in the crypts and we also see a Vale contingent riding into Winterfell courtyard to be received by the Boltons. Quick shot of Ramsay nuzzling with Myranda who doesn’t seem to be a fan of the attention.

Brienne/Pod: Extra shot of them sparring in the Riverlands woods with random Vale knights which is a continuation of them being chased in 1st trailer. Then a shot of her bringing her sword down on something outside the Riverlands Inn we’ve also seen in 1st trailer (chopping block or well?) And finally, the most intriguing shot is her and Pod somewhere in the middle of the snow (ie the North). No idea why she would be going there but that would appear to shut down speculation of her running into the BwB I would think. Perhaps she pursues Sansa to Winterfell in order to save her or maybe they decide to go the Wall. Who knows?

King’s Landing: Cersei and the High Sparrow presiding over a hearing with Olyvar/Loras where Loras doesn’t appear happy with the result. This is probably Cersei’s way of getting out of her marriage pact and a union she makes with the Faith. Loras getting arrested for being gay falls in line with the Faith Militant MO. Also we get the scene where Tommen presumably tries to get Cersei released from the FM and is rejected. Lots more shots of Margaery, Cersei, the High Sparrow etc but no more new info.

Dorne: Barely any Dorne stuff, just more extended scene of Bronn fighting when he and Jaime first get there.

Tyrion: Could be fancy editing but it sure looks like he gets a glimpse of Drogon in the mist while he’s on a boat, echoing the S5 poster. Also, the scene where the potential pit fighters audition for the slavers (this must be where Mr.Eko and Yezzan run the auction) gets a lot more screentime and you can see in a shot that Dany’s in the background watching the proceedings so it’s possible it’s her and not Hizdahr who purchase Tyrion at this point. And we get a great shot of the bridge at Volantis, can’t forget that.

Arya: New shots of her but no new info.

Dany: Tons of Harpy stuff and lots of Daario. No clues as to what happens to Barristan later in the season. Her meeting with Drogon could also be a quick meet cute before Daznak or that could be him dropping her off at the Pyramids (instead of the Dothraki Sea) after Daznak. Also have no idea who the brunette girl is encircled by Essos slaves/peasants with their hands outstretched, stumped on that one.

  28. Hodor’s Bastard,

I mean I think it’s safe to assume that’s the Winterfell crypts but I guess it’s possible it’s not. If she goes up there as Alayne then it makes more sense but I hope they let the fArya story drop or just have Myranda as her only change her to being unsmpathetic ( no chance Theon would save someone who helped torture him and has lied to him so much if he wouldn’t even trust his own sister!) . It could possibly work if she goes up incognito ( although I’m still struggling to see why she’s being put in harms way like that) and perhaps someone finds out (perhaps Myranda?). Theon (Sansa is one of the few characters left that can remind him of who he used to be) has to kill that person to keep her identity safe and perhaps escape with her. I dunno, it’s still pretty messy for me. Sansa replacing fArya would make little sense for me. Ramsay who is now the heir to the north could marry Myranda as the wedding itself is pretty much a plot device to gather characters in a certain place. Hmmm we shall see.
On the plus side, good to see Jamie getting stuck in on the combat side of things. For perhaps the greatest living swordsman in the books to have been underrepresented as such in the show has always irked me! The subtle dyslexia conversation about him between Tywin and Arya seems to be bearing fruit!

  29. More Ramsay S&M on the horizon! Ramsay’s sadistic bedwarmer Myranda could prove dangerous if Sansa’s in Winterfell.

  30. Beronn Stark,

Daenerys: “Lannister. Baratheon. Stark. Tyrell. They’re all just spokes on a wheel. This one’s on top, then that one’s on top and on and on it spins. Crushing those on the ground. I’m not going to stop the wheel. I’m going to break the wheel.”

Roose Bolton: “Stannis Baratheon has an army at Castle Black. He means to take the North.”

Stannis: “This is the time, and I will risk everything.”

Jon: “Winter is coming, and we know what’s coming with it. We can learn to live with the Wildlings, or we can add them to the army of the dead.”

The High Sparrow: “You are the few, and we are the many.”

The High Sparrow: “We serve the Gods, and the Gods demand justice.”

Daario: “Clean this city out, until the rats have nowhere left to hide.”

    Daenerys: “I am a Queen. I’m not a butcher.”

Daario: “All rulers are either butchers … or meat.”

  31. That’s an amazing trailer. And I dare say the person who posted on this very site the stuff about Hardhome looks to be telling the truth, based on this trailer. Wow. That’s going to be a really cool scene.

  32. Perhaps Melisandre is having her sacrificed and Selyse is getting cold feet, no pun intended?

  33. Jared:
    Beronn Stark,

Daenerys: “Lannister. Baratheon. Stark. Tyrell. They’re all just spokes on a wheel. This one’s on top, then that one’s on top and on and on it spins. Crushing those on the ground. I’m not going to stop the wheel. I’m going to break the wheel.”

Roose Bolton: “Stannis Baratheon has an army at Castle Black. He means to take the North.”

Stannis: “This is the time, and I will risk everything.

Jon: “Winter is coming, and we know what’s coming with it. We can learn to live with the Wildlings, or we can add them to the army of the dead.

    Thanks 😉

  34. I need to watch this a few more (hundred) times, but it’s a really cool trailer! At least there’s actual evidence of Sansa in Winterfell, too —those are definitely the crypts of Winterfell. Now, I only hope she’s not there instead of Jayne Poole but as part of a Vale delegation, substituting some of the Northern lords in terms of the plot.

The first CGI shot of King’s Landing was wonky as shit, though, especially compared to last years’. Hope they tighten it up.

BTW, that is definitely Drogon. In stark contrast to previous seasons, they haven’t got fewer scenes with the dragons than the books, but more. So, Drogon visits him at night? Presumably not long before the “big event.”

  35. Hoyti Von Totiy,

You don’t have anyone to lord your “told you so” over?! LOL

But we are all here!!! Go ahead, say it. I won’t mind, I’m eating my cookies.

(And praying to Rhllor she’s not marrying Ramsey!)
  36. Here’s my problem with Daenerys. They’ve totally destroyed her arc. When she’s in Slaver’s Bay, she’s torn apart between two identities: The Mother of Dragons and Mhysa. The ‘Mother of Dragons’ identity is violent, barbaric, a true Targaryen; on the other hand, her ‘Mhysa’ identity is forgiving, kind and caring. She chooses Mhysa and frees all the slaves, she tries to protect them, to end violence, but sometimes her ‘Mother of Dragons’ identity takes over her, like when she kills all the masters. When she’s in the Dothraki Sea after Daznak’s Pit, she realizes she needs to go home, back to Westeros, and adopts her ‘Mother of Dragons’ identity to the fullest. How can the show’s Daenerys have this revelation if in the past two seasons all she talks about is Westeros?!

  37. Did the high Septon say ‘we serve the Gods‘ as in plural?
Surely this puritan gentleman of all people should know of ‘The Seven who are one’ .

  38. Shane,

I would guess Olly. The person has lighter hair, and judging by the angles, appears to be shorter than Kit. Plus I have my doubts that Jon would be lecturing Maester Aemon in dealing with Wildlings.

Overall? This trailer just kills it. It’s completely insane, including a hell of a lot of blood. And I’m finding myself totally flummoxed on some of the story lines, which makes it even more awesome.

  39. King Tommen,

Thanks for the summary. I am at work and could only watch once.

Thanks for reminding me about Mr. Eko. I keep forgetting that he was cast. I doubt that it will be a pivotal role but I am eager to see him.
  40. I can’t tell for sure but it looks like Myranda is not enjoying Ramsay’s ‘attentions’ so perhaps she will be a little more fleshed out this season and not just Ramsay’s female counterpart in all dreadful things. The character has demonstrated she is a sadist so there’s that… but the actress Charlotte Hope could be quite good if they actually gave her something to do. I want to know if Myranda thinks Ramsay truly loves her or if she goes along with his whims as a means of survival.

  41. I liked how so many people said that the Sansa in Winterfell thing wasn’t going to happen and that it was ludicrous to even suggest it. And yet here we are with a freakin’ trailer with her down in the crypts. Hehe…

On the trailer itself though, I cannot do anything but clap. This is, hands down the best Game of Thrones trailer so far. There’s so much exciting stuff in this trailer. And also, the scale seems to be enormous this season! Just that shot of Drogon flying above Tyrion for instance. That was insane! I’m so absurdly excited about what promises to be the best season yet, that I think I’m going a little crazy over here!

  42. So it looks like Loras is getting arrested for sleeping with Olyvar since he’s the guy sitting in the witness chair ,

i guess we know which KL character is toast this season
  43. Greg,

Wow don’t get me wrong, That storyline in the last book was probably one of my favorites, I just think the change they’ve made will make more impact in both Sansa and Theon’s storylines, because they know each very well so it makes it way more emotional, and since they completly erased the Jeyne poole character out of the series it makes even more sense, otherwise it would just be another girl no one cares about being tormented by Ramsay. But I still I think she will be able to take some revenge by doing the biding of our “lord too fat to sit on a horse” so if I had to guess, It will half torment half satisfaction, yes because I also do not believe she will be able to control Ramsay anytime.

  44. Ok, this trailer looks AMAZING. I’m really excited, even about those plots that bored me to bits in the books. Well done, HBO!

  45. Nils98,

Totally agree. Game of Thrones has released some truly great trailers before (“Seven Devils” comes to mind, although that one was elevated by the music). But based purely on visual flair and the thrill that I felt as I was watching it, I legitimately think that this particular trailer may be the best one that they’ve ever done. The potential for this season is so high it’s off the charts entirely. Here there be dragons. 🙂

  46. Shade: getting that he was cast. I doubt that it will be a pivotal role but I am eager to see him.

Did you miss the part last season when she chains up the dragons, re-decides to not kill the Yunkai masters, from the trailer telling Daario that she isnt a butcher when he no doubt encourages her to purge the masters and Harpy, clearly she is going to be grappling with the type of leader she wants to become, the peacemaker or all fire and blood on everyone. The show has actually made this inner dilemma quite obvious, including Barristans and Jorahs advice to her last season.

  47. Flora Linden,

He’s in the new BBC2 series Banished about British criminals exiled to Australia in 1788. Not starring but he’s in the ensemble at least.

  48. coldtoes:
Does “HBO continues to be in discussions with its existing network of distributors and new digital partners to offer HBO NOW” mean they’re trying to get deals done with Amazon and Google? Cuz this one is on the Google play train

HBO Now is exclusive to Apple in the United States for no less than three months. Other countries are still being discussed.

  49. Sansa’s role in Winterfell – intriguing – (I still think she’s there to fuck shit up. I just can’t see her as a victim after all the talk about Dark/Goth/Possible child killer Sansa).

    Roose Bolton’s voice – divine.
    Jon’s line – well delivered.
Dany’s booty call’s line – as philosophical as a cartoon.
    Stannis’s determination – future trouble.
Brienne and Pod’s determination – more future trouble.
KL = Jonathan Pryce. Jonathan Pryce. Jonathan Pryce.
Dorne’s presence in the trailer – where?
    Tyrion’s surprise – warranted.
Arya’s face – precious murderous child.
    Emilia’s acting – ummm…yeah.

  50. Very cool! The show might do better than the last novel at getting everything together, who would have thought it.

  51. King Tommen: Also have no idea who the brunette girl is encircled by Essos slaves/peasants with their hands outstretched, stumped on that one.

I’m gonna bet it’s a priestess of Red Rahloo
  52. King Tommen,

Actually, there is brief a shot in the trailer where there’s a few boats rowing towards Hardhome. If you pause in that shot, you can quite clearly see both Edd and Sam behind Jon and Tormund.

  53. Some guy,

I like that. It could be a cool way to wrap together certain themes, if not actual scenes, from the source material.

The most interesting thing would be that it would require Reek making a choice to not tell the Boltons who she is, which would sort of parallel decisions he makes in the books… reclaiming his Theon-ness and whatever.

You know what also would have been cool is actually dramatizing storylines that actually occur in the actual books, but I digress…

  54. I know they are the sand snakes I mean the place looks like the place where dany kept her dragons so I thought the three of them went to bring our hearts desire “”please ignore this””

  55. Nils98,

Good catch. The Hardhome production stills previously released seemed to indicate they’d be there so not a huge shocker but nice to get a quick glance at them.

  56. What we can see of the Volantene architecture is a very interesting choice. Most depictions are way more inspired by South Asian architecture. This looks… European Gothic, at least partially, which I didn’t expect at all.

  57. Brienne is in the North and where is Pod and who cares about all the rest in comparison!

Whoo hooo, what a day to come home from the cruise…

  58. Shane:
    Drogon looks sick!

Who was Jon talking to?Looked blonde to me, maybe Aemon?

He looks quite small. Maester Aemon is small, I give you that but from his stature, I’m leaning towards Olly.

Edit: Where on earth did I get Guymon from? Smh, I meant Olly.

  59. Anyone got any idea what the 1.22 scene is about?

Or what the 0:44 banners are? They seem red and black and it’s vale men riding in so I’m guessing Grafton? or Bolton but that would just be silly

  60. Please please please let

Selyse be a bait and switch for Shireen in the flames. Shireen was born in salt and smoke, and will wake the stone dragons she dreams of . Selyse is a Queen, and [\spoiler] there is magic in Royal blood….

  61. So, where does Stannis end Season 5? Will we have the Battle after all? His seasonal arc has to end on a big note.

  62. There’s pretty much three types of figurines on Stannis’ battle table. Bolton ones, ones I don’t recognize … and ones, that kinda remind me of LF’s mockingbird, albeit a bit stretched. (Yea, I pretty much I agree with the person, who said (not sure if here) that LF and Sansa will take on Manderly’s role … Not sure how will Theon factor into that, tho.)
  63. I’m not sure Brienne is in the North. I think maybe winter has finally come to the Riverlands, or perhaps the Vale, and that’s why she gets the “winter is coming” voiceover.

  64. Definitely the best looking tv show ever, by a long shot. Even if I was gritting my teeth during Emilia’s monologue.

  65. Awesome awesome awesome!! So much speculation confirmed. Glad we got more hints towards Stannis’s arc!

    Who’s at 1:21??

  66. Well we have ..a… battle of some sort — there was that GoT exhibit video of him in armor with blood spattered on him

  67. gewa76,

I thought the monologue was great.

From what we’ve seen this season is going to be incredibly action-packed. Just hoping and praying that Theon’s leap of faith is kept in some form.

Regarding a potential stannis battle scene, the only clue we’ve had is a bloody-faced Stephen dillane in the pledge your allegiance vid, I think it will be off-screen.

  68. King Tommen:

…strange shot of a distraught Selyse on the ground which could be something to do with Shireen or maybe something entirely different.
I think Selyse is either watching certain events leading up to FtW or the FtW act itself. Perhaps Shireen is involved in a critical event (a mutiny victim?) that happens as Jon returns from Hardhome? I will shed many tears if something happens to Shireen though. I always thought that S&S would be quite vulnerable after Stannis left.
  69. Anyone has any idea what’s that camp on fire at 00:38?

Looks like Davos and maybe Stannis, but I can’t be sure. If that’s the case, I have absolutely no idea what it could mean.

BTW, this trailer has quite a few lines based on the books, or even taken directly from the books, which the first trailer didn’t have.

Oh, and first glimpse into the interior of the House of Black and White, though out of focus, unfortunately.

  70. Luka Nieto:
Anyone has any idea what’s that camp on fire at 00:38?

Looks like Davos and maybe Stannis, but I can’t be sure.

Doesn’t look like Stannis to me, but I may be wrong.

  71. Who is the woman at 01:22? It’s not a main actor, is it? Everyone seems to be… worshipping her? Whatever it is, it takes place at the Long Bridge of Volantis. Red robes… a red priestess maybe?

There seems to be a trial with the High Sparrow arguing against a very scruffy Loras, with Olyvar present as a witness (as many guessed), and Marg, Tommen, Olenna and Cersei present.
  72. At this rate we’ll have only 5 storylines at the end of the season. Even season 1 had more.

Winterfell (including Boltons, Stannis, and now Sansa and probably Brienne)
    King’s Landing
Dorne (and it will begin to look empty as Jaime and Sand Snakes leave)
    Braavos
    Meereen (including Dany and Tyrion)

    The Wall will be emptied.

Jon will be with the white walkers

and Stannis, Davos and Mel will be in Winterfell. Sam will probably leave at some point too.

  73. Lyanna Mormont,

There’s not even any snow in Winterfell at this point in the show. I hardly think you’re going to see a blizzard-covered Riverlands this season. Brienne and Pod have to be pretty far North to be that engulfed in snow.

Also, with LF in King’s Landing and Sansa in Winterfell, the Vale will have no action outside of the introductory run-in between Brienne and Sansa in E1/E2 (as should be the case).

  74. Tyrion, stop looking up at that Drogon! You’re going to miss the

    turtles

    below!

    I like

    turtles
  75. It looks like i was right. That Sansa will go to winterfell with a vale contingent and maybe she will bring Ramsay Farya. She will most likely take on manderly’s role. I also hope drogon gets a lot bigger by the daznak scene because its supposed to be shocking how much hes grown.
  76. Noooooo

a crow flies on a flayed mans body in the trailer….PLEASE DON’T BE STANNIS’ ARMY!!!!!

    🙁

  77. Tormund’s Woman:
    Hoyti Von Totiy,

You don’t have anyone to lord your “told you so” over?! LOL

But we are all here!!! Go ahead, say it. I won’t mind, I’m eating my cookies.

i have but i dont remember the names of the people i had the discussion with.

Not everyone has a snappy nickname like mine, easy to remember ….

    p.s.

    I TOLD YOU SO!

  78. Hollyoak:
    What happens to HBOGo?

I have that on my Apple TV now.

HBO Go will still work for HBO subscribers on the devices they already use. HBO Now is a new service that allows you to subscribe to HBO without a cable subscription and is a timed exclusive for Apple devices.

  79. Another trailer with no 1080p source, by the way? Sigh… Come on, this is clearly the best trailer of them all —all seasons, and we don’t have it at its proper quality?

  80. I like how they just used a simple soundtrack for this one. As much as I love the “edgy alternative female singer” thing, it was kind of getting old. This makes it feel a lot more cinematic.

  81. KrakenDaughter:
So it looks like Loras is getting arrested for sleeping with Olyvar since he’s the guy sitting in the witness chair ,

That, or maybe they’re using Olyvar to fill in Osney Kettleblack’s testimony? Hard to see, but it looks like the sparrows grab him after he lunges toward Olyvar. Otherwise, I don’t know what already existing character they could use for Osney’s testimony. And they seem to prefer re-using characters rather then introduce new ones all the time.

  82. Hollyoak,

Might be a scene from TWOW, but the

three guys on the ground aren’t thralls: the last third from the left has a harpy on his back
  83. I already wrote several posts on westeros.org about the new trailer, with hundreds of  and  emoticons, but I need to say it here again:

    OMG, HOLY FUCKING HELL!
    That. Was. Amazing!!!
Maybe the best trailer so far, just WOW!
So much craziness and awesomeness right now, I’m still hyperventilating – Stannis, Stannis, STANNIS!
I can’t breath; Hot, badass Stannis, Roose dreading Stannis, Stannis now risking eveything – I love it! /drool

And Dany’s line was now -with context- so much better and actually damn cool!

Volantis’ Long Bridge looks absolute amazing!

And Pryce is already ruling and nailing it as High Sparrow!

    DAMN HYPED!

  84. It’s a very busy day, I decide to pop in and quickly see what, if any, new news there is, and find this!?!

I can’t even think of what to say, at the moment, other than…

    WOW!!!

  85. I think Loras is arrested for being at a whorehouse during the city raid and Olyvar is then later testyfing that yeah, that was totally his favorite customer. This won’t end well.

Loras=Marg on the show. I think the “technical” virginity stuff is totally out as not really sellable with show!Marg. Maybe she’ll later be implicated for adultery though.

  86. Shane,

Actually I thought it was Ramsay, similar hairstyle, perhaps early on Ramsay visits
Castle Black like in the books.

  87. Lighting my cigar right now….. *cough*…. ughhh tastes horrible :p

    Ha, love Sansa in Winterfell,

I hope that she’s up to something rather than being just a wedding guest. I’d love her to take some of Manderley’s storyline because nobody would suspect her since she’s just Littlefinger’s niece and she should get around her home unnoticed since she would know it better than anybody else.

    And I love the

    Volantis

bridge architecture, nice nod to the Ponte Vecchio. <3

  88. Did I already say how amazing and stunning and cool and badass and hot Stannis is looking?
    Because he f*cking does!

    And Roose’s line <3 <3 <3

And Dany's last shot where she's looking up to Drogon, wow!

And all the other cool, amazing, crazy stuff…

    …I can't keep my temper…

  89. Nils98,

Never understood either and love her character. Looking forward to next season and everything which is happening in Meereen.

  90. BTW the Volantene slaves reaching out to the woman (whose potentially a red priestess) have little tattoos on their right cheekbones. Nice little details there.

  91. This trailer convinced me now that this season is going to be the best one, even with all the cuts and omissions and stuff!

  92. A question here because the monitor on my work computer is old and lacks clarity…

It looks like Sansa in the WF crypts has dark hair and the necklace that she wore in the Vale last season. If so, then does she not go as Sansa but as Alayne?
  93. Say what you will about the changes they’re making, but let’s face it:

    This looks fucking beautiful.

  94. Nils98,

It’s not hate. People tend to use this word with such ease when in fact it’s rarely felt by the ones who criticize something regarding fiction. Even if they might say “Oh I hate this” that doesn’t mean they actually experience the sentiment. Hate is much too strong for something that is not even real. Some people just don’t like a character, a story line, a tv show, etc. That does not make them ‘haters’ or wrong, it’s just a matter of opinion. You don’t have to understand why someone dislike what you like, you just have to accept that your taste is not universal and some may think differently.

  95. DROGON!! So exciting! 😀
I think Daenerys’ “I’m going to break the wheel” speech is a big hint towards the demolition of the Iron Throne and the monarchy in Westeros by the end. Not stopping the wheel, but breaking it.
    So much stuff here! Wow!

  96. Oh, and Baelish is in Winterfell too, so… when does he go to King’s Landing? Does he go to Winterfell and then to King’s Landing? Or the other way around?

  97. Shade,

I think you are over analyzing book Danny. Must you make D bipolar or suffering from MPD or DID? I am relatively happy with show Danny…

  98. My prediction: Sansa is in Winterfell

    to wake her mother up.

Why else would Sansa be visiting the Winterfell crypts if not to knock on her mother’s tomb and witness the rising firsthand? Together, they will conquer Winterfell from the inside. After the battle of ice, Melisandre will have an epiphany and adopt Stoneheart as her own Azor Ahai.

Yes, this means Catelyn’s corpse drifted northwards in the show version. An understandable change of course.

  99. Messy Justin Massey:
This trailer convinced me now that this season is going to be the best one, even with all the cuts and omissions and stuff!

Ofc its going to be great since it has nothing to do with the filler books.

Imagine this trailer if D&D stayed true to filler material … the horror.

  100. I’m just as inclined to believe that there is no wedding at all for Ramsay on the show. The only evidence we have at all that this occurs is that it happens in the books.

The show has made a point of demonstrating that the Bolton’s don’t necessarily need to consolidate their rule by marriage. We don’t even know that if there’s any other houses from the North who are going to Winterfell as the show gives us the appearance that Roose has the entire Northern army at his back and they all marched up to Winterfell at the end of last season.

We’ve already been given significant hints that the army Stannis will be marching with to Winterfell is going to be made up of Wildlings as opposed to northern Mountain Tribes. Very doubtful that we get any of that Arnolf Karstark stuff (or Alys for that matter).

We’ve also been given hints that Jon could get assassinated for entirely different reasons (simplifying his belief that the Wildlings should join the NW is his undoing).

So with all that in place, what is the point of Ramsay marrying a Stark (fake or real)? I’m leaning heavily towards the notion that the Vale forces (through LF) have agreed to join up with Roose to help fortify Winterfell for Stannis’ attack and this will of course be part of a larger vengeance plot that LF and Sansa help enact.

  101. Nice Daenerys wheel analogy/speech.

    Long Bridge of Volantis.

Oh shit those look like the crypts of Winterfell.

Arryn guards riding into…yeah, probably Winterfell.

Brienne and Podrick somewhere that it’s snowing.

“We can learn to live with the wildlings, or we can add them to the army of the dead”

Sparrows block both of Tommen and 5 Kingsguard.

Sparrows smashing foreign idols in the markets?

Loras, Olenna, Margaery, Cersei, Tommen sitting somewhere, High Sparrow in center, hearing report of some guy. Something the guy says apparently makes Loras jump out of his chair and lunge at the guy, but the Sparrows spring up to restrain him. Loras has facial hair now.

Selyse Baratheon face down in the snow somewhere.

    OKAY, OUR BIG TAKEAWAYS:

1-Sansa in Winterfell now seems to be happening – again, this didn’t happen just YET in the books but it was ABOUT to happen so I have no idea how to judge this condensation.

2- Why is Loras lunging at some guy? Could it be some Sparrow who makes a remark about men who lay with men and disparages Renly? (Is this a big departure or just a throwaway scene?)

3 – Why is Selyse face down looking up in the snow?

  102. KG:
Brienne at the Wall? What madness is this?

    I .. I … think I like it!

Can’t tell if she’s at the Wall. It starts snowing in the Riverlands at this point in the novels.

  103. What is the Tormund Hardhomme rumor that is being referenced on ASOIAF reddit — apparently trailer lines up w/ it?

  104. North Remembers:
My prediction: Sansa is in Winterfell

    to wake her mother up.

Why else would Sansa be visiting the Winterfell crypts if not to knock on her mother’s tomb and witness the rising firsthand? Together, they will conquer Winterfell from the inside. After the battle of ice, Melisandre will have an epiphany and adopt Stoneheart as her own Azor Ahai.

Yes, this means Catelyn’s corpse drifted northwards in the show version. An understandable change of course.

….you’re being really sarcastic but it isn’t funny.

  105. The Dragon Demands –

I think Selyse was left behind at Castle Black, without Melisandre there to protect her (Mel joins Stannis on the march to Winterfell, the trailer suggests). I’m assuming Selyse is about to be raped/killed or both.

  106. Alicia,

Yeah, I mean everyone I’m talking to says that they love her, but on the internet there seem to be an awful lot of hate towards her character. Don’t understand, don’t agree. I think most Dany haters seem to misinterpret her character.

  107. King Tommen,

Great summary but I think its another girl Ramsay is kissing…the hair’s too dark for Miranda…perhaps Jeyne Poole without the fake Arya nonsense?

  108. That is definitely Myranda with Ramsay – Charlotte Hope will be in several episodes this season. The question is, what do they plan to do with this character beyond being Ramsay’s partner in crime and lover?

  109. hola,

I don’t need to be informed on the definition of hatred. I know that it’s not real hatred, but who cares? Do you walk around telling people who “hate” a particular character or story line, that that’s not real hatred? That you cannot hate something that’s fictional, since it’s not real? Jeez, you must be of the fun kind….

  110. Grand maester giz:
1.24 u see Briene goin head to head vs a guy on a horse ,is that anguy?

Unlikely , the guy has almost a full set of armor on, could be a knight of the Vale?

One other thing , in that scene there isn’t a trace of snow , in the other scene with Brianne and Pod there is lots of snow so either the weather changes drastically or they really get about this season.

  111. When Wimsey and Annara Snow arrive here please let them know their Sansa Stark in Winterfell crow is waiting for them in the fridge

  112. Damn Dany and Drogon are so amazing…

This is definitely the pinnacle of high fantasy.

As a kid we could only dream of these things, now we see them on 50inch HD TVs in all it’s glorious realistic detail.

    Just Wow…

  113. asdf,

Completely unconfirmed but someone claims that the Hardhome sequence in E8 goes down this way:

NW learn that Rattleshirt and a group of Wildlings at Hardhome are selling their own kind as slaves. Tormund is enraged by this and asks to go to put a stop to it. Jon agrees but thinks some of the NW should go as well (Edd and Sam included). They arrive at Hardhome by boats and are trying to rescue the women and children there when they probably first have to deal with Rattleshirt and his crew but are then quickly interrupted by the Night King arriving outside the gates. He re-animates a bunch of dead Wildlings into wights and then it becomes a huge battle with most of the Wildlings desperately trying to leave in the boats. During the fight, Tormund is surrounded by a bunch of wights and fights them off to allow Jon enough time to escape. He then torches them and himself so they can’t “turn him” in a big heroic end for the character. As Jon leaves on the boat, he locks eyes with the Night King and that’s supposedly the end of the episode.

Again, that’s in no way confirmed but nothing that’s been leaked or shown thusfar would disprove it. I really want it to be true mostly because it sounds awesome.

  114. Now i understand what Kit meant by saying “they’re just throwing money at it”, referring to the show. The scale of this series has become ridiculous for a TV-Show. It really feels like we’re all watching a really, really big budget movie. Besides, i’ve never seen a series with such beautiful cinematography.

  115. King Tommen: Again, that’s in no way confirmed but nothing that’s been leaked or shown thusfar would disprove it. I really want it to be true mostly because it sounds awesome.

Wow that does sound freaking badass if bittersweet for

    Tormund

    .

Where did this rumor come from?

A bummer from me from this trailer is that

with Sansa in winterfell, seems like super duper unlikely that Mance will be headed that way. Conclusion: he probably gets fucking burnt. Deaths — Mance, Aemon, Tormund, Tommen (Patchface) — thatd be lots o death as was alluded to. And who knows whats gonna happen with Loras.
  116. Arthur: Damn Dany and Drogon are so amazing…

I wish someone would gif just that part! Drogon coming to briefly visit Daenerys is just an awesome, awesome scene!! Show-watchers will love it! I wonder which episode that’s in? I hope it’s early and we get a Drogon glimpse before the end.

  117. Watched again (a few times, because I love love this trailer!!) and two things come to my mind:

1)Great to see the Roman bridge of Córdoba as the Long Bridge of Volantis. I’ve been there so many times I can’t believe I didn’t recognize it the first time I saw it in the trailer! It looks so… decadent. I like it.

    2)Where is Ser Barristan?

  118. King Tommen: Completely unconfirmed but someone claims that the Hardhome sequence in E8 goes down this way:
NW learn that Rattleshirt and a group of Wildlings at Hardhome are selling their own kind as slaves. Tormund is enraged by this and asks to go to put a stop to it. Again, that’s in no way confirmed but nothing that’s been leaked or shown thusfar would disprove it. I really want it to be true mostly because it sounds awesome.

Oh my god, that does sound awesome! I heard rumors that the Pink Letter scene would appear at Hardhome when the White Walkers (supposedly) shows up. But your rumor is better, much better. And then we have The Pink Letter in the season finale. Awesome!

  119. Okay, here’s my take on the trailer:

    1- Fucking awesome

2- The shot of Selyse in the snow crying, I believe it’s either

Melisandre burning Shireen. She doesn’t like her daughter, but seeing her burn is another thing. Although she watched her brother get BBQd with the biggest joy. OR, Stannis leaving for Winterfel and saying something like, ”I’m lusting after a crazy red woman but bitch you’re something else”.[\spoiler]

    3- Sansa in Winterfell….

I kind of like it, but it really depends on what they do with it. I hope she will get a combined role of Manderly and Lady Dustin. I just thought about this a couple of seconds ago and it makes it all worth it I think: Sansa seeing Reek.[\spoiler]

4- Sons of the Harpy look really cool.

5- Melisandre leaves the Wall? I don’t know about that. I really don’t. It’s too much of a change. This makes me the most nervous.

6- I love the bridge of Volantis. Perfect Shot and perfect VFX.

7- Winter in the Riverlands… UGH finally. I hope they at least put a little falling snow in KIng’s Landing by the end of the season.

8- Is Asha, sorry Yara… in this season? Is it confirmed?

  120. Volantis Bridge was filmed in Córdoba, another city of Andalucía (Spain)

  121. mau,

It is nice that you have formed that opinion, but I don’t really see how it could possibly be “official” 😉

  122. Thomas:
Now i understand what Kit meant by saying “they’re just throwing money at it”, referring to the show. The scale of this series has become ridiculous for a TV-Show. It really feels like we’re all watching a really, really big budget movie. Besides, i’ve never seen a series with such beautiful cinematography.

I know. It looks absolutely stunning! It looks better and more expensive than most blockbusters these days. I believe that the previous seasons had a budget of like $65-$75 million. There’s no way that this season “only” costed $65-$75 million. By the looks of the trailer it must have costed, like $90 million+. Being HBO’s most popular show ever seems to really serve the show in it’s favor.

  123. Nils98: Oh my god, that does sound awesome! I heard rumors that the Pink Letter scene would appear at Hardhome when the White Walkers (supposedly) shows up. But your rumor is better, much better. And then we have The Pink Letter in the season finale. Awesome!

No the last episode will be:
Jon on his knees counting turnips in castle black for an entire episode.
It will be D&Ds homage to DWD and a hand of reconciliation thowards the book purists.

  124. mau,

It is clear that the show intends to give us more action and a streamlined story. Haters of AFFC and ADWD will love that, so will most Unsullied viewers.

  125. mau,

Better than the last couple of books, which is not hard to do. Wouldn’t say that about the first three.

  126. Kay:
    DROGON!! So exciting!
I think Daenerys’ “I’m going to break the wheel” speech is a big hint towards the demolition of the Iron Throne and the monarchy in Westeros by the end. Not stopping the wheel, but breaking it.
    So much stuff here! Wow!

Dany’s speech makes no freaking sense. She’s against slavery, but definitely not against feudalism or hereditary monarchy – hello, she wants to take the throne according to the rule of that system! So what the hell does that even mean? You could add “Targaryen” to the list of families on the “wheel”.

Why, oh, why must they keep writing stupid, OOC and nonsensical lines for Dany?

  127. Hoyti Von Totiy: No the last episode will be:
Jon on his knees counting turnips in castle black for an entire episode.
It will be D&Ds homage to DWD and a hand of reconciliation thowards the book purists.

Even though I personally love the books, I totally see where you’re coming from. The changes does look really awesome, so….I’m all in. Too much nonsense in AFFC & ADWD, for sure.

  128. I’m thinking that these new batch of GoT directors will bring a lot to the game. The visuals so far are stunning.

  129. ash,

Oh, yes, completely skipped that scene, I just wanted to see him doing some cool stuff but he’s not with Dario or Grey Worm later in the trailer, nor in the pit….

  130. Annara Snow: Dany’s speech makes no freaking sense.

This seems like a bit of an overreaction. For all you know, this dialogue in its original context is immediately followed by Barristan or Tyrion or someone else saying exactly that: “And what about Targaryen?” And it’s been clear for some time now that Dany’s arc with its focus on slavery and freedom is trending against the idea that she is simply going to assume the throne of Westeros in an ordinary manner.

  131. Nils98: I know.

The thing that bothers me a little is this…

D&D and HBO have put together this well oiled epic series making machine. When GoT ends in 7 seasons it would be a shame to disassemble this highly proficient and skilled team.

HBO need to start working on another GoT spinoff or some kind of epic so they can just take D&D’s/HBO’s finely tuned machine and put it to work on their next epic.

PLEASE HBO, keep your GoT production team together and just give them another project.

There is NOTHING on TV even close to this, it is going to be such a shame when it ends…

UNLESS they take this team and give it a new purpose…..

  132. People weren’t just saying Sansa in Winterfell, they were saying “this obviously PROVES that she is fArya!” People saying there’s no way she would be there at all were equally unimaginative.

Keep in mind, Sansa could be at Winterfell without Ramsey still being there. Since she’s past the books (is that true?) it’s difficult to make assumptions.

  133. Great trailer

lol at Dany as a Targaryen going on about Spokes and the other houses grinding people into the ground

I’m a bias Stark fan of course but this is only good if it makes a contrast to her adopting a cbf attitude later and going “fire and blood” on everyones ass.

People acting out of well meaning but simplistic self-righteousness can do as much damage as someone explicitly oppressive so I hope they keep what happens with Astapor in

Irony is the High Sparrow with his prohibition mobs could be just as damaging to KL as the Mountain was the Riverlands but I digress

Only seen it once but have to say it was the image of Selyse face-down in the Snow that was the most intriguing part of that trailer to me

  134. GreggS:
    King Tommen,

That’s definitely not Varys. Heavy speculation based on some leaked script conversations the SS’s have is that this man is the ship captain who smuggles Jaime and Bronn into Dorne. The SS’s capture him and force him to give up this info.
  135. Turncloak:
When Wimsey and Annara Snow arrive here please let them know their Sansa Stark in Winterfell crow is waiting for them in the fridge

You wish. I didn’t think that was 0% chance of Sansa being in Winterfell; but that it’s hilarious to assume something as stupid based on ntohing. And Sansa being in Winterfell is stupid, and this only proves that D&D are bigger jackasses than I was willing to presume without proof; I guess she’s borrowed LF’s transporter now and become just as big an idiot as he is in the show and started to take tourist trips so she could just narrowly avoid being taken as hostage again.

What there’s indeed 0% chance of is that she’s marrying Ramsay. When that happens, please deliver that crow; but that would require D&D to compeltely lose their minds, and as big jackasses as they are, they aren’t insane.

  136. mau,

I think he’s there simply to drop off Sansa (or Alayne) and then he goes to KL afterwards. Perhaps he returns by the end of the season though.

  137. Annara Snow: Dany’s speech makes no freaking sense.

Because Dany might realize that the Iron Throne is actually bad news. The Iron Throne creates conflicts and wars that harvests tens of thousands of lives. But then again, maybe she doesn’t mean that. She might mean something like, that she will not only take the Iron Throne but also destroy all the big houses as well. But I think that your point of them writing stupid and nonsensical lines for Dany is, well, stupid and nonsensical. This monologue about breaking the wheel is amazing, the little we’ve seen from it (IMO).

  138. The bridge of Volantis looks AMAZING. I’m in love with the concept. These shops, small streets like a labyrinth, it’s beautiful…

  139. Sam: This seems like a bit of an overreaction.

How would that make Dany’s speech any less out of place and ridiculous?

  140. Arthur: The thing that bothers me a little is this…

D&D and HBO have put together this well oiled epic series making machine. When GoT ends in 7 seasons it would be a shame to disassemble this highly proficient and skilled team.

There is NOTHING on TV even close to this, it is going to be such a shame when it ends…

UNLESS they take this team and give it a new purpose…..

I would love seeing a prequel show focusing on Aegon’s conquest, but more importantly; Robert’s Rebellion. That would make for an amazing show!

  141. Nils98: Because Dany might realize that the Iron Throne is actually bad news.

Thanks for proving my point that their writing of Dany is horrible.

But I guess some people will be happy to hear “badass” speeches even if they make zero sense in context.

  142. Annara Snow: How would that make Dany’s speech any less out of place and ridiculous?

Um, because it would be a dialogue with more than one thing happening in it. So you have actually got no idea whether it’s “out of place” or not, since you don’t know what its “place” is, since it is currently only known to you from a TRAILER.

  143. Well

Loras’ fate has always been up in the air; not much difference between “Let him get (purportedly) gravely injured offscreen and disappear” and “Give him a dramatic on-screen trial and disappear.”
  144. Annara Snow,

She’s not talking about ending the monarchy.

She’s talking about ending the civil war/game of thrones and liberating Westeros through conquest.

It’s an in-character “Ageon the Conqueror Reborn” kind of thing.

  145. STANNIS MTHAFKIN BARATHEON
    DAENERYS MTHAFKIN TARGARYEN

  146. Jofrey’s Cunt:
Seven hells!!! So I guess this pretty much confirms Sansa storyline this year, the theories were correct indeed and I just love it!

Confirms she may be in Winterfell,

But she could be there as Littlefingers Niece “Alayne Stone” rather than fArya (Ramsay Snow/Bolton appears to be kissing someone else on the kneck, Myranda?)

That’s probably who the Boltons are receiving in that released still

I am wondering if Sansa is playing the Barbrey Dustin role there?

Only issue is I find it very hard to believe that Roose Bolton wouldn’t recognise Sansa as he would have attended court during her “13” years and definetely would have been there during Robert’s visit

  147. Annara Snow,

It seems that book purists are not satisfied

Give me your tears, book purist,..

Now go and wait for fat lord and his novelization…..

  148. Not 100%, but pretty sure the slave at 0.33 fighting in the yellow shirt/helmet is Jorah. Seems to focus on him way too much to be a randomer.

  149. Some people here seem to really hate the creators of this show (and sometimes even GRRM), I wonder why they keep watching the show and the trailers… If you don’t like, don’t watch and stop bitching.

  150. Annara Snow,

What if she is speaking strictly of what has happened since her family was overthrown, specifically the recent war of the 5 kings?

  151. Annara Snow:
But I guess some people will be happy to hear “badass” speeches even if they make zero sense in context.

How do you know what the context of the speech was? have you seen another version of the trailer that shows the few minutes running up to and the few minutes after the speech? if so please link it

    Moka:
Some people here seem to really hate the creators of this show (and sometimes even GRRM), I wonder why they keep watching the show and the trailers… If you don’t like, don’t watch and stop bitching.

These kind of people have existed since season one , just tune their nonsense out and you will be happier for it.

  152. Annara Snow: Thanks for proving my point that their writing of Dany is horrible.

But I guess some people will be happy to hear “badass” speeches even if they make zero sense in context.

I cringed a little bit, but it could be performing the role that Dany’s dismissiveness of the nuanced points Ser Barristan was making in the books that things aren’t as simple as Viserys’s narrative

Will wait and see because it may work in context. Samw with Sansa in Bolton held Winterfell, sounds like they are ignoring any Vale plots in the making.

  153. Annara Snow,

Bananarama, even though your rage is misplaced, this is a quality rant. If you’ve got a problem with the show material, lay the blame at the door of Mr. Martin for writing checks with his mouth that his WordStar couldn’t cover.

  154. Off-Topic Otto:
    ….were equally unimaginative.

Oh, I think there are plenty of imaginative options in the Riverlands, but let’s see how the premature congestion at WF goes. Crazy jump forward. Hopefully Sansa doesn’t blink as she whizzes by the Neck.

  155. Annara Snow,

Littlefinger helping Sansa gain power, that she can easily use against him, is stupid. Seems like he’s smarter on the show than in the books.

  156. ash:

Is that Mormont behind Dany and Mel in this picture?

Yes, that’s him. You can see that scene better in the first trailer.

  157. Arthur: The thing that bothers me a little is this…

D&D and HBO have put together this well oiled epic series making machine. When GoT ends in 7 seasons it would be a shame to disassemble this highly proficient and skilled team.

They probably need some time off. I’d like to see them (or if D&D are tired of fantasy, Bryan Cogman and Martin–he could do weekends) tackle two seasons’ worth of Conan the Barbarian stories. References and influences from them are all over GoT, and D&D have commented on the connection. It could be serialized or standalone. Could get this same budget but without the massive cast. They’re already friends with a (albeit not popular, I couldn’t make it through his movie) Conan.

  158. mau:
After this trailer it is official.

The show is better than the books. In every way.

Nice bait there, friend. I’d use earth worms, though. Better chance to catch the big fish.

  159. I’m getting hyped now! If Sansa really takes on the role of Manderly it’d be awesome.

  160. Renly’s Peach: Nice bait there, friend. I’d use earth worms, though. Better chance to catch the big fish.

You are accusing me of trolling? Because I expressed my thoughts?

Better get used to it. It will soon become a general opinion.

  161. Rabid Grunt,

I’m sure it’s Jorah. The same scene appears in the first trailer, too, you can’t see his face because he’s wearing a helmet but it’s the same yellow shirt/wooden skirt/bracelets he always wears.

I’m so happy that he’s finally getting some exciting scenes and he’s not following Daenerys like a puppy yet one more season!

  162. mau,

I strongly believe that season 5 will be superior in most ways to book 4/5 but we already had 4 seasons where the books were better so you cannot claim the show is superior as a whole.

  163. Actually reckon Sansa is there as a Wyman Manderly substitute with Vale troops backing her to play the Frey offset role

  164. Nils98,

Just the first season had a budget of US$60 million, by season 2 they where close to the US$75 million. I’m assuming that they must be close to the US$200 million right now, if not more. You just have to look all the sets and costumes that they build for this season.

  165. Annara Snow,

I always visit this website and read the comments…I just want to say: I really love Annara Snow…between all the fun you guys bring and exciment for the new footage, is always great to have some bitterness 🙂

  166. Pepi,

Concerning the map items, there are two of Stannis’ flaming hearts are in the middle, but I cannot figure out what the three tall ones on the left are supposed to represent. Looking up Rob Stark’s map pieces didn’t help.

  167. I’d hate to detract from the “is this Dany clip bad writing or not” debate, but what’s the consensus on the mystery character at 1:21?

Gotta be something tying Volantis into the larger imminent conflict in Slaver’s Bay, right?
  168. Mr.Bungle:
    Annara Snow,

I always visit this website and read the comments…I just want to say: I really love Annara Snow…between all the fun you guys bring and exciment for the new footage, is always great to have some bitterness

Not to mention rather amusing. 🙂

  169. KrakenDaughter:
    mau,

I strongly believe that season 5 will be superior in most ways to book 4/5 but we already had 4 seasons where the books were better so you cannot claim the show is superior as a whole.

I agree that in the first 4 seasons books are usually better, but not always.

There are a lot of changes that have improved the story, mostly by giving supporting characters more space. Characters who have POV chapters are better in books, but those who don’t have POVs are usually better in the show.

Of course this is just my opinion.

  170. Grand maester giz:
    mau,

    I agree

    I don’t agree :p

The show is looking more and more like a feature film as it progresses. There is lots of simplifications (which isn’t entirely a bad thing) and awesome shots. My fear is that they are going to simplify the story too much. Of course it is subjective what you perceive too simplistic.

I’m going to enjoy Thrones nevertheless and it will be a classic for sure. The trailer was great 🙂

  171. Nils98,

I’m not surprised at your reaction. After all you were unable to understand why others disagree with your likes. Why wouldn’t you try to insult people you don’t even know when they point out that people having different opinions is normal? I just hope that one day you’ll be able to embrace this world’s diversity.

  172. NickTargaryen,

I’ve downloaded it from the Apple site with JDownloader. Much better quality, true HD 1080p. I don’t think anyone has uploaded it to Youtube with such a good quality. It looks amazing like this.

  173. Kay:
    DROGON!! So exciting!
I think Daenerys’ “I’m going to break the wheel” speech is a big hint towards the demolition of the Iron Throne and the monarchy in Westeros by the end. Not stopping the wheel, but breaking it.
    So much stuff here! Wow!

    Kay,
I think you may be right. I just hope Dany changes back to the way she used to be. Adored her in season 1, but now IMO she comes off as so smug, arrogant and just plain boring ~ hopefully, Daario (v. 2) will be able to pound some sense into her! 🙂
Anyway, the trailer is awesome – loved the cinematography, the mob scenes, the High Sparrow laying down the law, Brienne in the snow, Arya in the House, and Bronn channeling the Red Viper.
    >
Nice that HBO is hooking up with Apple, but speaking of “channeling”, Tim Cook and his little Apple Company, need to stop “channeling” the bulk of their profits to Cork, Ireland, and start paying their fair share of U.S. income tax! Valar Pagar Taxos! (All Men Must Pay Taxes!)

  174. Am I crazy or are there seriously people who are worried about who will take Lady Barbary Dustin’s role? You’re kidding, right? Are you also pining for the seeming elimination of Moon Boy and Gerris Drinkwater?

  175. Rafael,

Well since letting things get too complicated in the books with too many subplots has proven to be such a problem, (and one reason I think Martin is having so much trouble finishing) a little more simplicity on the show is a good thing and besides it looks like it will still be pretty damn complicated!

  176. Tyrion Pimpslap:
    mau,

It is clear that the show intends to give us more action and a streamlined story.Haters of AFFC and ADWD will love that, so will most Unsullied viewers.

You said it better than I did. Thrones loses some of its uniqueness in the process.

I hope that Martin finishes the books at some point. My prediction is that Martin manages to write Dream of Spring (I would guess 2024 as ADOS publicication year) but it won’t be enough to finish the story and 8th book will be needed. We’ll see.

  177. One thing I was wondering about.

We know from the trailer that Tyrion and Varys are in Volantis.

I think we can assume that at some point Tyrion

meets up with Jorah who either kidnaps Tyrion or agrees to bring Tyrion to Dany when asked by Varys. They then travel from Volantis to Meereen.

    However from filming I believe

we see Tyrion and Jorah travelling on a River together. If this is after they meet in Volantis then what River is it? Do they travel back up the Rhoyne? Or was it always Varys and Tyrion in the boat on the River?
  178. Conan,

It’s been something we’ve been wondering about for a while.

I have no answer. But I’m pretty sure they won’t change the geography. Others disagree, though.

  179. I told Anarra Snow back in November when I told her Sansa will go to Winterfell, and that D&D will write that no matter how ridiculously stupid it is.

She teared into me relentlessly with her claws…..Schadenfreude feels so good now hehe Vindication baby he he. Hows it feel Anarra Snow?

  180. Annara Snow: You wish.

Sansa will either marry Ramsay or take the role of Wyman/Lady Dustin. I’ll keep the crow warm for you 🙂

  181. Dutch maester,

Depends on which side of the map we’re looking at. If the side in the foreground is the Sunset Sea, then yeah, it’s gotta be Ironborn. If it’s reversed, then that’s the Narrow Sea and those are Stannis’ own ships. I looked to see if we could see a fourth marker for Ironborn forces, like the ones Robb’s map had on the Neck, to maybe signify Deepwood, but I didn’t see any. I’m guessing the third marker on the map is maybe a stand in for Mance’s army? Stannis’ way of showing that with Mance’s army behind him, he has enough men, but without them he doesn’t.

  182. Also, looking at the scene of the burning camp, it’s definitely not Stannis and Davos. It’s two men I don’t recognize. They’re in black robes, so I thought maybe Sparrows, but I don’t see the seven-pointed star marks on their foreheads.

  183. Kyrion:
I told Anarra Snow back in November when I told her Sansa will go to Winterfell, and that D&D will write that no matter how ridiculously stupid it is.

She teared into me relentlessly with her claws…..Schadenfreude feels so good now hehe Vindication baby he he. Hows it feel Anarra Snow?

She also attacked the person who left the leak on Facebook, which proved to be correct .

I was also initially claimed that Sansa will not go to WF, because I thought that it implies fArya role.

I wasn’t thinking outside the box. Sansa could be there , although not as a bride.

  184. Is there really any reason for people to be so satisfied with themselves about the Sansa thing? Is this the schoolyard or can we all just enjoy the trailer?

  185. So I now think the two unknown chess pieces are the Baratheon burning heart and then a sword through a coin — to symbolize Stannis’s sellswords, probably

  186. Rafael,

You really have a point there. While GoT it’s still amazing, i kinda feel that the dialogues from season 4 were a bit… plains. Just not outstanding and deep like they used to be on previous seasons. I remember Varys talking with Ned about serving the realm and i get goosebumps.

  187. Annara Snow:; I guess she’s borrowed LF’s transporter now

Anyone who genuinely cares about “teleporting” or travel times is a goddamn moron.

  188. The Sansa-at-Winterfell naysayers could have spared themselves a lot of grief–and well-deserved mockery–if they hadn’t been so arrogant about being correct and so weirdly vicious in shouting down those who supported the theory. I hope that crow tastes delicious.

  189. Winnie:
    Rafael,

Well since letting things get too complicated in the books with too many subplots has proven to be such a problem, (and one reason I think Martin is having so much trouble finishing) a little more simplicity on the show is a good thing and besides it looks like it will still be pretty damn complicated!

Yes I agree. In my opinion the story has had pretty much the right amount of complexity thus far. I hope that they will keep it consistent and maintain the various motivational dimensions. What I have sensed is that especially Dany and Jon have shown a bit too much one dimensional qualities recently.

  190. One question that keeps coming back to me…

Why is Melisandre with Stannis and Davos in the tent?
  191. I’m making some screencaps based on the original Apple 1080p trailer. Hopefully it’ll reveal some things, such as the pieces in the strategy map, who the hell are running around in that burning camp, and any other details that we might’ve missed due to the lower quality of the Youtube uploads.

For starters… I was pretty sure it wasn’t Jorah fighting in that scene in which slaves are fighting each other, presumably so that they prove themselves and are sold to the Masters to fight at the Pit. The man has a helmet so it wasn’t clear, but now… yeap, it’s him.

  192. Dutch maester:
One question that keeps coming back to me…

Are we sure Stannis just doesn’t have a tent somewhere within the vicinity of Castle Black? When we see the shot of him preparing to march, he’s decked out in armor and fur, but in this shot he’s wearing his more casual outfit. They’re in a tent, but it may be pre-march from Castle Black.

  193. There is hardly any reason for anyone to be smugly satisfied with Sansa being in Winterfell. Almost every supporter of that theory claimed she will marry Ramsey and become fArya. That was completly stupid theory then and it is still completly stupid theory now.

Those posters who suggested Sansa might indeed go to Winterfell in different role were originally non-believers, who tried to give the possibility of Sansa being in Winterfell some logical sense.

  194. The people running at the burning camp are random extras, not Stannis or Davos. Just confirmed, thanks to the 1080p trailer. Still, a burning encampment in the snow… what’s up with this shot? Melisandre seems to be in a similar encampment in the very next shot, so why and how does the Baratheon camp go up in flames?

Also, the line of people receiving Sansa and Littlefinger at Winterfell seems to be completely different from the one in the promotional photo, in which Ramsay, Roose and Fat Walda alone seem to be receiving someone (well, them and lots of soldiers.) Here there are a lot of Northern noblemen and women (a chorus of Northern Lords, as Wimsey would say.) So the promotional picture probably didn’t actually point to Sansa going to Winterfell, though that is the case.

  195. Tyrion Pimpslap,

My guess is that Jorah and Tyrion travel from Volantis by boat and that the boat gets sunk / disabled in the Sorrows (which will have to be moved from its location in ADWD; sailing around or through(!) Valyria, perhaps?) after they’re attacked by the Stone Men (this is assuming that sequence is still in the show, as it’s iffy since those special effects might have been to make the bridge in Volantis look the way it did in the trailer). They’re then “rescued” by slavers and taken to the auction block. Just a guess.
  196. Abyss,

Whatever works best for you. Just so long as I can bookmark them and study them religiously.

    You’re doing R’hollor’s work!

EDIT: Did that tumblr page replace the gifs from the “A Day in the Life” special btw? It seems to have in my favourites sidebar.

  197. Thomas:
    Rafael,

You really havea point there. While GoT it’s still amazing, i kinda feel that the dialogues from season 4 were a bit… plains. Just not outstanding and deep like they used to be on previous seasons. I remember Varys talking with Ned about serving the realm and i get goosebumps.

    Exactly !

I have rewatched seasons 1-3 (especially the first and second season) much more thoroughly than season 4.

  198. Tyrion Pimpslap,

It is clear that the show intends to give us more action and a streamlined story. Haters of AFFC and ADWD will love that, so will most Unsullied viewers.

Well I’m not a hater of AFFC/ADWD but I also realize that those books translated to TV without cuts and alterations would be a disaster. I’m surprised how many book fans don’t seem to realize that. The only chance this show has at being good this season is by changing things. The fact that this season will be more inspired by AFFC/ADWD instead of based on is a good thing.

  199. Best Game of Thrones trailer yet? And I’m talking about best trailer from every season…

  200. Hardhome looks amazing. It also looks way less color-corrected than before. Everything is not overwhelmingly blue now.

  201. Luka Nieto:
So the promotional picture probably didn’t actually point to Sansa going to Winterfell, though that is the case.

I hope the promotional picture is about Greatjon.

  202. Gods, they nailed it with Jonathan Pryce. I mean the man IS the High Sparrow. What?! 2 lines in the trailer and is like that’s how HS is supposed to talk and be!

    Queenofthrones,

LOL! I had the same reaction.

    Lion of Night,

Hey, wait! I didn’t get to have my say about Dany’s speech! I think the comparison of the Houses with a wheel is pretty accurate. The war has every House grabbing the upper hand on the other houses at one point. Breaking this wheel really means brake them all.

That being said, I do hope this speech comes before DP when all seems peaceful and rosy for her, when she’s all set to marry Hizdar for the good and peace of the Slaver’s Bay and when she’s planning to move on to Westeros (before Meereen is under siege) because otherwise that speech might be out of place. You know, with Dragons on the loose and Meereen under attack, and Sons of Harpy messing with her rule form inside the city…
  203. Rafael,

While season 1 was arguably the best overall season the added original material and dialogue was at it’s worst. Mostly rambling dull dialogue and exposition scenes. Season 2 was not much better. It improved a bit in season 3 but season 4 had their strongest and most confident writing.

  204. And then there is this recent rumor suggesting “Winter” will be released Around October this year, claiming Martin told some press that was he was aiming for now. I’d dismiss it as unlikely, but thenNikolaj Coster-Waldau making statements in the same directions. I am not believing it till I see it on George’s site, but am I overly optimistic if this makes me slightly hopeful the publication date might be a question of months instead of more than a year?

  205. Luka Nieto,

Fuck, there is a 1080p version?! – Well, I don’t think my program could handle that anyway… And I have already put a lot of time in the GiFs I have, I don’t think I have the nerve to do it all again. 😉

  206. Ozymandias,

    #WeDoNotKneel

And I wouldn’t anyway because he’s messed with his #Samsay or #Ramsa scenario for 4 threads at least! He’s still not forgiven!

“We serve the Gods and the Gods demand justice.”

  207. Greenjones,

Same here my my friend, same here. I am hugely impressed with Pryce as HS, he seems to have nailed it even though we have only seen a couple of clips.

I hope we see more some Doran in the next one. I feel that Siddig El Tahir El Fadil El Siddig Abderrahman Mohammed Ahmed Abdel Karim El Mahdi (That’s his full name, no joke!) aka Alexander Siddig, will nail his performance too.

  208. I can’t wait until tonight to search YouTube for the dozens of YouTube GoT fan channels that will have their own breakdown and theory crafting of this trailer…

By in large it will be a collective “holy shit” exciting moment on the Internet.

Man April 12th can’t come fast enough!

  209. GaiusB,

There is hardly any reason for anyone to be smugly satisfied with Sansa being in Winterfell. Almost every supporter of that theory claimed she will marry Ramsey and become fArya. That was completly stupid theory then and it is still completly stupid theory now.

It’s not a stupid theory because that’s exactly what’s going to happen. What do you think she is doing in Winterfell?
There was already a spoiler website that is 99% accurate which confirmed she is getting married this season though it didn’t say to who but the fact that she is in Winterfell this season pretty much confirms it will be to Ramsay.

  210. From what I can tell so far, D&D are absolute geniuses! Adapting the events of aFfC and aDwD by folding in the existing characters that got nothing but filler into new roles

Using Ellaria as Arianne, combining Trystane and Quentyn(?), and folding Jaime and Bronn and therefore KL into the story while replacing Ser Arys

Folding Brienne&Pod into Sansa and folding Sansa into Winterfell and maybe replacing Manderly?

Keeping the White Walking storyline in the fold with Hardhome and keeping Sam in it

Condensing the Meereenese knot in a way GRRM couldn’t achieve in 11 years of writing time

Folding Varys into Tyrion’s plot further and folding Tyrion into Meereen, perfect!

We’ll have to see in season 6 and in TWOW whether omitting Euron and Young Griff works out, but so far, they’re doing amazingly!

  211. Mormont,

Your argument may seem controversial, but I agree almost 100%. Except I don’t find any of that to be an issue in the books; but amalgamation in adaptation is something that simply must happen.

  212. I just guessed that Sansa was going to Winterfell when I saw Sansa, Roose, and Theon at some concert back in October/November, thinking she is there with the new cast she is shooting with, they are not just randomnly meeting together at a concert, they have to work with eachother pretty closely to hang out I figured. And with no Farya casting, I just said why not Sansa take her place? I think D&D would love to do it, they love consolidating storylines.

Then Anarra Snow attacked me(Everyone even said look out for Annara when you talk about Sansa), called me names, called me everything under the sun for even suggesting that Sansa would go to Winterfell, and when she thinks she is right, get ready for an attack that insults your intelligence.

This is why it feels so damn good.

  213. Rafael: You said it better than I did. Thrones loses some of its uniqueness in the process.

Nonsense. The First season was very streamlined, direct and action packed yet you couldn’t say it wasn’t unique. If anything, they’ve turned the Feast/Dance material back to the spirit of the first three books. There’s still nothing on television like GoT, and that isn’t going to change. It will still be a complex tale with around 8 interlocking stories and dozens of major characters. Even with all the action scenes in the trailer, the show has always been made up mostly of scenes where two people talk to each other, and that’s not going to change.

  214. winnie,

Keep the faith my Ironborn brother/sister!

It’s got awful childish in this thread.
Come on, guys. Let’s leave the pathetic book vs show conflict somewhere else.

  215. TheTouchOfFrost: I mean I think it’s safe to assume that’s the Winterfell crypts but I guess it’s possible it’s not.
There is no compelling reason to think that is what they are. For one thing, there are no crypts: it seems to be an indoor (possibly underground) hallway. Also, recall that the Stark Crypts had prominent statues of the deceased: and none are present. At any rate, unlike the Stark Crypts, this place clearly is in use: the braziers are all lit.

There are no wolves or any other sigils there, so it really could be anywhere. I’d bet more $$$ on Sansa being in the Vale or even Riverrun in this scene than at Winterfell.

  216. Wimsey,

I want some of what you’re smoking, Wimsey 😉

Come on, pal. I didn’t believe it either. But Sansa’s in Winterfell, and there’s no doubt those are the crypts of Winterfell. Think of the likely context of the scene, too —she’s lighting candles for her deceased family. I still think there’s no way she’s there instead of Jayne Poole, but she’s certainly in Winterfell.

I’ll create a IMGUR folder with all the screencaps and explanatory information, by the way 😉

  217. One thing that I really like about this trailer is that it does something that GRRM does so well in the books: parallel Daeny and Jon. One thing that makes Daeny really stand out relative to all of the other claimants to the throne is that she is the only one who genuinely cares about the common people. Stannis can repeat it as lip-service, but the words do not mean anything to him. The Lannisters certainly do not care about this.

And on the other end of the world, Jon is does the same thing with the Wildlings. I really love that they include the line about the Wildlings coming through either as living men or wights. This means that some of Jon’s less intelligent colleagues will be sticking their head in the sand (or snow) on this critical issue, which in turn will set up a lot of the fuel for Jon’s contribution to the story.

On a side note, who is Ramsay’s plaything? Given the woman’s general features, I can guess who she is pretending to be. (Whoops: so much for the Sansa Conjecture!) Her face is somewhat similar to Rose Leslie’s, but obviously that is not who it is. Is that Myranda? (We’ve seen so little of her that I’ve forgotten what she looks like already.)

  218. Wimsey,

We shall see. But with a Vale envoy seemingly being at Winterfall too the evidene increases. Just hope she doesn’t mess the storyline up there up as it was one of the strongest parts of the last two books and don’t need no tinkering!

  219. TheTouchOfFrost,

Yes, I believe that they’ll have Dorne this season and the Greyjoy’s next season. Euron and Victarion are too cool, and have too much yet to come, to be totally omitted… or so I hope anyway.

  220. Wimsey,

There is another shot of both Littlefinger and Sansa riding through the Winterfell gate with visible Bolton banners.

  221. Luka Nieto: Come on, pal. I didn’t believe it either. But Sansa’s in Winterfell, and there’s no doubt those are the crypts of Winterfell.

Those look very different from the Winterfell crypts shown from Year 1 and Year 2. Where are all of the statues? Where are the dire wolves? Why are all the braziers lit? If she were in the Winterfell crypts, Sansa would need a torch.

In fact, I wouldn’t even bet that they are necessarily crypts: the one thing that makes me think that they might be is the fact that Sansa is holding a candle despite the fact that the place is lit. We have not seen this behavior in either show or books, but lighting candles as a token of respect for the dead is a common enough visual metaphor.

  222. Wimsey,

That is Charlotte Hope, Myranda. And she’s having sex with Ramsay, which is not new and doesn’t point to her taking the place of Jayne. For me that’s as confusing a theory as Sansa taking that role.

  223. Wimsey,

You could make a case for Jamie caring for commoner…at least he did once but the reaction to his Kingslaying may have changed that. Tyrion shows a lot of empathy too but has a more realistic approach to it than Dany. Tommen and Myrcella seem to be concerned with others feelings but hard to tell as they’re so young and are technically Baratheons anyway!

  224. mau,

Thanks for the pic! I did see the red (flayed man?) on black banner and rebuilding wall props, when the Vale knights entered the gate in the trailer. I just couldn’t see any Petyr. Yet there’s someone leading them who from behind may be him.

  225. Chimeny,

We can but hope and wait. Think Victarion’s ship has sailed ( literally) but Euron could still put in an appearance.

  226. Wimsey,

Dude, even if you refuse to believe that Sansa’s not in the Winterfell crypts, there’s a clear shot of LF leading the Knights of the Vale (with their sigils on their shields) into the Winterfell courtyard to be received by the Boltons. It’s time to face reality.

  227. Luka Nieto,

Not to mention that, since her family members are the (ahem) newest residents-to-be of the crypts, Sansa would be in the new part of town, where there are no statues (or occupants) as yet.

  228. Luka Nieto,

It could just be the angle from which we see her, and that her eyes are closed, but it doesn’t look like Charlotte Hope to me. It probably is, though.

  229. mau: You are accusing me of trolling? Because I expressed my thoughts?

Better get used to it. It will soon become a general opinion.

    Lol.

    Good luck with that.

  230. TheTouchOfFrost: You could make a case for Jamie caring for commoner…at least he did once but the reaction to his Kingslaying may have changed that.

Hardly: there is no evidence that Jaime ever had an empathetic side prior to that, or that he stopped this because this was an influence on him killing Aerys. From what little information we get, he was a callow individual obsessed only with becoming renowned as a great swordsmen and, of course, his sister. Now, Jaime might wind up becoming like this: he does seem to be growing a “soul” so to speak as the narrative progresses, and he showing some signs of actually thinking about what it would be like to walk in someone else’s shoes.

However, among characters in any position of power or possible power, only Daeny and Jon really show any true empathy for people beneath their social station. They are the only two who view ruling at one level as a duty towards protecting other people not usually considered under their protection. That is one of the major parallels that GRRM has set up between the two over the series that particularly comes to light in Dragons: and it’s nice to see that it is in the show.

  231. Mormont,

I wouldn’t mind seeing one of the Greyjoy brothers show up in the show but I hope Jon Connington and Young Griff stay cut. I’m not a fan of that storyline at all nor do I think the average viewer would have any interest in it.

David and Dan had their work cut out for them this season and it does seem like they managed to trim and alter AFFC/ADWD into an exciting season of TV. Let’s hope it turns out as good as the trailer makes it seem.

  232. Sansa in Winterfell has to mean the fArya plot is gone, and Sansa is marrying Ramsay. Why would the Boltons arrange a marriage with fArya, when Sansa, who is (supposedly) the heir to Winterfell is available? I assume Baelish has already been to KL, and annulled Sansa’s marriage to Tyrion.

  233. TheTouchOfFrost: We shall see. But with a Vale envoy seemingly being at Winterfall too the evidene increases.

I didn’t catch that part at first. So, I wonder if they will be doing the Alayne Stone story at Winterfell instead of the Vale. I had hoped that they would push on into Sansa’s Winter material: but perhaps like Jaime, they are just going to tell the same story in a different location.

On another side, I like that it appears that Daeny and Drogon are having “trysts”!

  234. Maria,

Sansa’s not there as Sansa. She’s still disguised as Alayne (black hair, and all.)

    Wimsey,

She may take Drogon leaving again as a sort of “I don’t recognize you as my Mother anymore…”. That’s gotta hurt to the Mother of Dragons.

  235. Can someone make a good screenshot of those northern lords in that shot of Sansa and LF arriving in Winterfell? .

  236. Luka Nieto,

Agree. I asked the question upthread. She has black hair so not as Sansa. Is Littlefinger offering the Boltons an alliance with the Vale?

  237. Luka Nieto:
    Maria,
Sansa’s not there as Sansa. She’s still disguised as Alayne (black hair, and all.)

The black hair is a lousy disguise, though. Anyone who knew Sansa would be able to recognize her.

  238. King Tommen,

“So with all that in place, what is the point of Ramsay marrying a Stark (fake or real)? I’m leaning heavily towards the notion that the Vale forces (through LF) have agreed to join up with Roose to help fortify Winterfell for Stannis’ attack and this will of course be part of a larger vengeance plot that LF and Sansa help enact.”

Now that is something I could get behind much more so than Sansa playing the role of fArya and marrying Ramsay instead.

  239. Maria,

Everyone from Winterfell is dead. As for other Lords who knew Sansa, Yohn Royce last season (and in AFFC) didn’t recognize her.

  240. Maria: Why would the Boltons arrange a marriage with fArya, when Sansa, who is (supposedly) the heir to Winterfell is available? I

It will be Alayne Stone, not Sansa Stark, who is at Winterfell. Remember, nobody but a few Vale Lords know that Sansa is with Littlefinger. Clearly the Lannisters and Bolton’s do not: otherwise, Littlefinger probably would not put himself at risk by putting himself in their power. The Bolton’s would turn Sansa Stark over to the Lannisters in a heartbeat. Whomever Ramsay was, um, well, whatever-it-is-that-Ramsay-would-do-to-a-woman-ing probably is fArya. It’s a brief shot, but the woman looks less than thrilled to be there. It could be the angle, but I don’t think that we’ve seen her before: perhaps they will do what the books did, and just pluck out a character that had been so incidental as to be forgotten.

Incidentally, I was talking about the wrong scene: I noticed that there is a very brief one of Sansa in something that does look very much like the Stark crypts. I had assumed that people meant the first one, in which Sansa is in well-lit tunnels of dark granite rocks. However, they do briefly show a second one in which she is by quartzite or sandstones that are much more orange in color. That’s the type of rock that we see in the Winterfell crypt. So, yeah: she probably is there.

  241. rex: The trailer has way more action than both book 4 and 5

That’s exactly what I was thinking! This may be the best GoT trailer yet. This makes S5 look amazing. Here’s hoping the show doesn’t break stride this year.

  242. Luka Nieto:
    Maria,

Everyone from Winterfell is dead. As for other Lords who knew Sansa, Yohn Royce last season (and in AFFC) didn’t recognize her.

True. The Boltons probably haven’t seen her in a decade, and couldn’t recognize her.

  243. Maria,

That’s my biggest issue as well…It will be quite a suspension of disbelief that Roose doesn’t recognize a girl he’s known for 12 years, just because her hair is a different color and she’s a little taller. My beautiful Lord of Leeches is not a stupid man, he knows what Starks look like.

  244. You will be queen,

It’s actually a pervy nudity website that gives details on upcoming nude scenes in movies and TV, it’s called recapped.com. Don’t worry it said that it is unlikely that Sansa shows nudity but she does get married and lose her virginity this season. The website’s information is almost always correct though I question the losing the virginity part.

  245. 32;Tommen,

    King Tommen,

The brunette girl is the Harpy. It is known! The gold masks are the Harpy! A counter revolution to Dannys revolution? And a religious revolution in kings landing and a northern uprising against the Boltons. Is this the theme

  246. The Fighting Agathons: It will be quite a suspension of disbelief that Roose doesn’t recognize a girl he’s known for 12 years, just because her hair is a different color and she’s a little taller. My beautiful Lord of Leeches is not a stupid man, he knows what Starks look like.

That might be part of the game: perhaps he will suspect. However, the Boltons and Starks are not on friendly terms in either the books or TV series. Given Ned Stark’s distaste for the man (mentioned in both books and on TV), he might never have met her. (Remember, the fact that people do not know exactly what other people look like is kind of important here!)

  247. Things are happening like I thought. Jon Snow is going to unite the Nights Watch, Wildings, North, Vale, and White Walkers against the dragons. This trailers is showing that he wants to unite the Watch with the Wildings. And Sansa is going to help him unite the North and Vale with it. The last piece of the puzzle will happen in season 6.

In the past, the North bent the knee to the dragons. The song of ice and fire is the story of what happens when the north does not kneel…..

  248. Chimeny,

It is pretty epic. One of hte main reasons I want to see a Robert’s Rebellion prequel is to see Robert’s Stag Helm in all it’s glory! They’re pretty much the epitome of being Ironborn which I don’t think Balon, Theon or Yara have really captured yet.

    Wimsey,

I disagree. Jamie has shown empathy in a few situations (mainly when away from his sister’s influence). He’s the only person in his family who appears to care for Tyrion and when he was 15 and fighting against the Kingswood Brotherhood he saved Lord Crakehall by placing himself in danger eventually leading to him crossing swords with the deadly Smiling Knight (as he remembers ” The Mountain of my boyhood. Half as big but twice as mad”). Whilst serving in the Kingsguard he appeared to be the only one wrestling with his conscious over the growing insanity and horrific acts of the king. As he remarks “It was that white cloak that soiled me, not the other way around.” His Kingslaying certainly wasn’t motivated by selfishness or else he would have advised Aerys to open the gates like Pycelle did. Plus there’s the saving Brienne from being raped and saving her from being bear-raped. Obviously he has a selfish and ruthless streak as has been shown on many occasions but he has displayed empathy and even kindness too.

  249. Here‘s my album of pretty good quality screencaps.

    The Fighting Agathons,

How do you mean they’ve known her for 12 years? They don’t all live together, you know? Roose might’ve seen her a couple times in her life, maybe.

  250. Maria:
Why would the Boltons arrange a marriage with fArya, when Sansa, who is (supposedly) the heir to Winterfell is available? I assume Baelish has already been to KL, and annulled Sansa’s marriage to Tyrion.

Because Sansa is not only already lawfully wedded to another individual, but wanted by the Crown for high treason. Cersei would NEVER allow her to walk away like that. And marrying Ramsay Bolton to “Arya” is meant to solidify the Boltons controlling Winterfell. How is this accomplished by marrying him to the alleged bastard daughter of a minor lordling from the Vale (assuming she’s presented as Alayne)?

It makes absolutely zero sense any way you look at it.

  251. Sansa with dark hair doesn’t seem like much of a disguise to the viewer because we’ve been watching her regularly. But she’s also been going through puberty since the Boltons last saw her and there’s also the powerful fact that they don’t expect this girl to be Sansa.

  252. D&D have repeatedly said that the world is going to contract, but when it actually happens some people are surprised! I guess it is the uncertainty that makes people worry, and I admit I am a little worried about what might happen to some characters, but that just adds to my excitement!

One example of this is Sansa. What did people really expect her to do? She was isolated from the other storylines, and there hadn’t been any casting reports from that region. She had to do something, and I’m really looking forward to the surprise element there.

Books 4 & 5 were unfilmable, unless you want the majority of the unsullied to stop watching. I’m sure it was hard for D&D, but if they even cock up one, or two storylines I would still see it as their greatest accomplishment yet.

It is great fun watching book pursuits bitch & moan though, so I’m looking forward to going on westerns.org (hello, Linda) & reddit when the season starts.

Best GoT trailer yet though, and makes up for the slightly average first season 5 one.

  253. Wimsey:
TheTouchOfFrost: I mean I think it’s safe to assume that’s the Winterfell crypts but I guess it’s possible it’s not.
There is no compelling reason to think that is what they are.For one thing, there are no crypts: it seems to be an indoor (possibly underground) hallway. Also, recall that the Stark Crypts had prominent statues of the deceased: and none are present. At any rate, unlike the Stark Crypts, this place clearly is in use: the braziers are all lit.

There are no wolves or any other sigils there, so it really could be anywhere.I’d bet more $$$ on Sansa being in the Vale or even Riverrun in this scene than at Winterfell.

Lol your denial game was quite strong. Sansa is in Winterfell, time to eat your crow Wimsey :-]

  254. Luka Nieto,

Thank you! They look great. I think I spot a fat bearded lord in that group of Northmen, but I can’t find the Greatjon anywhere unfortunately.

  255. Luka Nieto,

    Nice job!

Who do you think Brienne is fighting on that horse?

I don’t see Sam in the boat going to Hardhome either so maybe he does stay back at castle black or leaves go to a certain city.

  256. Also that shot of Brienne in the snow doesn’t appear to be the north. I’m pretty sure I spot a thick forest in the background so unless she is in the Wolfswood I’d say she is still in the Riverlands.

  257. Wimsey,

    Luka Nieto,

I realize it’s possible that Roose has only seen her a few times, but he has spent the last year with her mother and brother, whom she greatly resembles, and even the show has made mention that she looks just like Catelyn. I just find it hard to believe that Roose wouldn’t keep tabs on his enemy, it just seems less likely to me that an important banner man would be unfamiliar with his liege lord’s children. And it is certainly possible Roose will give Sansa the side eye like Littlefinger gave Arya in the second season and just leave this valuable piece of information alone rather than do anything useful with it.
I guess in the end it would seem super convenient to me, but I’m probably not the most unbiased viewer 🙂

  258. ColdPie,

A Knight of the Vale. I’m going to add descriptions to every image.

    mau,

There are not. The shot of the Boltons receiving someone must be something else entirely. It’s all Winterfell, no doubt, though.

  259. mariamb,

It’s Charlotte Hope, trust me, she is one of what I call “The Trinity of GoT goddesses,” I would know their perfection anywhere. You can guess I am all smiles today, because all three are in the best trailer for a television series, ever! Whomever cut the trailer, kudos!

    1. Melisandre
    2. Missandei
    3. Myranda

  260. Greenjones:
    Luka Nieto,

A bit of casting news from casting call pro. The role is labelled weirdly though. Portia Victoria, a model, is listed as playing “Smith/Brothel Goddess” in ep. 503. I don’t get why there’s a slash in the role name and what the two have to do with another but there you have it.

    That is really weird.

Perhaps she’s the woman being worshipped in the trailer at 1:22. Dark hair and possibly similar features.

Tyrion goes to a brothel in Volantis, and she’s outside being worshipped, someone exhibiting Red Priest-esque powers but crudely labelled a “goddess.” And either the actress did double work… as um, a background extra metalworker, or the character switches between being worshipped and doing metal work?

Yeah, it’s an odd description and doesn’t make much sense.

  261. I think Sansa may become fArya. All they have to do is tell the Boltons that she is in fact the real Arya and get Theon to agree. Or they tell the Boltons that she’s Littlefinger’s bastard daughter and use it to get an alliance with the Vale. Baelish convinces Sansa that Tyrion is considered dead and that they will kill Ramsay in due time, giving her Winterfell back. And then all the Reek/Theon redemption stuff plays out even better when Sansa’s marriage to Ramsay is worse than expected!

Maybe it’s crazy but I think they could make it work and the Unsullied wouldn’t even know it wasn’t a Martin twist from the books.

  262. Vale Soldiers entering Winterfell and HBO’s deal with Apple LOL FAIL

Oh well, at least I got S1 and S3.

  263. Greenjones,

It shoudn’t have… All the GIFs are on one page now, just go down to the bottom (and Always Support it).

Upload is painfully slow btw, will try again tomorrow, if it doesn’t work then I need to find another uploader that doesn’t mass with the res of the GIFs…

  264. Turncloak,

No, I don’t believe the skeptics should capitulate just yet. Something is not sitting well with me either about this WF situation. I’m prepared to eat a few hats, but there may be some mummery going on in the north regarding that trailer. I’m holding out for a better offer. 🙂

  265. What are the odds of Myranda defecting to Melisandre’s tutelage if Stannis descends on Winterfell and crushes the Boltons? Wasn’t Myranda a stray Septa?

  266. TheTouchOfFrost,

That is not what empathy means. Jaime has shown very little dapacity until recently to put himself in someone else’s place. Brotherly love is not empathy: Jaime like and even afmires his brother, but Jaime does not ever think about what it would be like to be Tyrion until he looses his hand. Fighting outlaws need not reflect any empathy: and in Jaime’s case, it was to pursue glory. Like many “heroes,” he is in it for the admiration of his social peers, not the small-folk he helps. It is not until much later (stuff that could be in this season) that Jaime reflects on how carrots are better than sticks for dealing with the commoners: but although it is a good first step, this still has a pragmatic tactical basis. As for his Kingslaying, he was saving himself and his father (and probably other family members). That is not an empathetic act.

Now, Jaime might be becoming empathetic in bits and measures. What people have dubbed a redemptive arc really is a “soul-finding” arc. (The great irony of Jaime’s Crows/Dragons storyline line is that in attempting to

elevate himself to his father’s level, Jaime actually proves to be a man with some compassion (a trait common to although not exclusive of empathetic individuals) who some might say is greater than Tywin.)

. However, this is dynamic development: change to the character that was developed. And, of course, completely in keeping with this story, which is all about people trying to be someone greater than they thought themselves (or were told by others) to be.

  267. Renly’s Peach: Because Sansa is not only already lawfully wedded to another individual, but wanted by the Crown for high treason.

If Baelish gets Sansa’s marriage annulled in KL, then Sansa is available. Cersei’s feelings about it don’t matter, as Cersei is facing a walk of shame and a trial, and the Lannisters are in no position to do anything about the North. The show likes to conflate threads. If Sansa marries, then turns against the Boltons, then she’s taking over fArya and Manderly threads, and isn’t it interesting that there’s no Jeyne Poole or Manderly in the show.

  268. Luka Nieto,

    Great, thanks.

The poor fellows seem to be in the business of destroying “false idols”. I can see the flaming heart of R’hllor and the Black Goat of Qohor among the various figurines on the stand. Anyone recognise others?

    Things I’m most curious about:
    – where are Brienne and Pod? The North? Mountains around the Vale?
    – why is she attacking a well or whatever that is?
    – is it really Mance preparing for some barbecue? Doesn’t seem like his hair.
    – Jorah as General Maximus Decimus Meridius? Why else have that helmet? (since the show doesn’t really like helmets)
    – what’s up with Baratheon camp in flames? (It is Baratheon camp, right?)
    – What’s Melisandre stunned about?
    – Will Loras completely take over Marge’s role in the trial?
    – an increased role of the Red Priests? Maybe finally mentioning Azor Ahai or something similar?
    – Ellaria looks very cool! So does Bronn. And Jorah.
    – there’s a tear on Missandei’s cheek. Could it really be GW’s death scene?
    – why is Selyse on the ground? Poor Shireen?

  269. Hodor’s Bastard: No, I don’t believe the skeptics should capitulate just yet. Something is not sitting well with me either about this WF situation.

I am willing to accept that Sansa is going there. However, what is amusing is that none of the putative evidence hitherto presented turns out to be germane. The Bolton’s greeting a guest had to be Sansa because she’s the only person they would so greet: except that it looks like we have a delegation from the Vale and that they probably won’t know it’s Sansa. They aren’t greeting “Sansa Lannister”: they are greeting someone else who is Sansa in disguise. (Indeed, I’ll bet that the Vale lords are there because supposedly Sansa’s sister is getting hitched.) The hillshots that people insisted were from the Northlands pretty clearly are from the Vale. Sansa might well be bathing in Winterfell: but she could be bathing at the Vale too. Whoever we saw Ramsay “enjoying” probably is fArya: but either she is Myranda or she’s someone who’s casting we missed. (Given that the book basically did that, the show might be able to get away with it.)

Here is my best guess as to what we have here: an amalgamation where

Sansa is sort of taking (or sharing) Mance’s role by going to Winterfell because of Arya’s impending nuptials; once there, she might take on some of Manderly’s roles plotwise, and also participate in fArya’s abduction: after all, the Bolton’s claim to the North is justified by their marrying the last living Stark. In the meantime, the Alayne Stone story of Sansa trying to be someone she isn’t can be played out there, only with Alayne more involved with the Game of Thrones than she was in the book.

That is my best stab: what is yours?

  270. Annara Snow: Dany’s speech makes no freaking sense.

Dear Annara Snow, Dany’s speech made plenty sense to me. But hey, I am just a show watcher, what do I know? You may have some super speshul secrit knowledge from Martin that Dany is “definitely not against feudalism or hereditary monarchy – hello, she wants to take the throne according to the rule of that system!” I certainly do NOT. Just following her journey for the last four seasons – from I want the throne to I want to free slaves – it seems to me that she just might be waking up to the fact that feudalism is baaaaaaad. But that’s just MY opinion.

  271. Tyrion Pimpslap:
    Luka Nieto,

In the shot of the burning camp, does the guy on the left of the screen look a bit like Roose to anyone else?

    No, but:

    1. It has snow, so it is North
    2. They don’t have wildling’s or NW’s clothes, so it is not Hardhome
    3. We see tents, so it is about some battle

It is Battle of Ice or DM.

  272. Mr Fixit,

I think Brienne is back in the Riverlands due to what appears to be a thick forest behind her in that snowy shot.

  273. Mr Fixit: – an increased role of the Red Priests? Maybe finally mentioning Azor Ahai or something similar?

Is that woman in reddish-brown robes with long darkish hair a red priestess? She doesn’t look like anyone we’ve seen, and she clearly is in Essos and getting up close & personal with the lower classes. That makes me hopeful that they’ll be doing a bit with this part of the tale.

(And, again, this could ramp up the Jon/Daeny parallels big-time.)

  274. Renly’s Peach,

Unless Littlefinger explicitly goes to King’s Landing to negotiate with Cersei about annulling the marriage, say, in exchange, for Littlefinger giving Olyvar over to testify against Loras Tyrell to the Faith. Plus, as far as Cersei knows Littlefinger is loyal to her so that if Littlefinger says that he has Sansa in his custody (as in, a prisoner, not a kind of ward) and that he will marry her off to the Boltons, who are crueller captors and will ensure that she has no real political power… Well, it could work.

Also, if she is playing the part of “Alayne Stone,” as in a bastard, she is pretty noticeably in the head of that Vale contingent going into Winterfell beside Littlefinger, so that if they were trying to hide her identity they could have done probably a better job to make her less conspicuous to anybody that might recognize her.

  275. Wimsey: One thing that I really like about this trailer is that it does something that GRRM does so well in the books: parallel Daeny and Jon.

Yes, from the trailer, AND from the first three episode description, it’s becoming very clear that Jon and Daenerys are both on similar journeys of trying to integrate marginal people (Wildings, slaves) and facing similar opposition from the “establishment.” I really like how these two characters are both outside the main action in the seven kingdoms of Westeros, Jon at the Wall and frequently beyond, and Daenerys in Essos, both having had non-“7-kingdom” lovers, both having lived for a time among non-“7-kingdom” peoples, and working towards similar goals. The show is making that very clear.

  276. I really don’t think there is any reason to think that Roose Bolton would be able to recognize Sansa on sight. House Bolton may have been outwardly loyal sworn bannermen to the Starks of Winterfell before the War of the Five Kings broke out, but that doesn’t mean that they were on friendly terms. I seriously doubt that Roose visited Winterfell all that frequently during the 13 years that Sansa was alive and growing up there. It was a relative time of peace, after all, so there was no real reason for him to go. He and Ned probably never saw each other except when it was absolutely necessary, and that would only be for official business. No need to get the families together.

Even if Roose was summoned to Winterfell at some point in the intervening years – the logical occasion may have been Ned calling the banners during the Greyjoy Rebellion – Sansa would have been very young at that time. She wouldn’t have been sitting in on the war councils, and Roose wouldn’t have had a reason to give her more than a brief glance. He’s an incredibly smart, perceptive guy, but there’s no reason to think that he would have held on to that particular memory, or ascribed it enough significance to make an instantaneous connection years later. He might have seen an older Sansa if he was at Winterfell when Robert Baratheon came there to offer Ned the position of Hand, but there’s no reason to assume that he was there (logistically because it was the first season and Michael McElhatton hadn’t been cast at that point). He only arrived when Robb called the banners, and by that time, Sansa had gone to King’s Landing. So their paths would only have ever intersected fleetingly – if they ever intersected at all.

I don’t care how well Roose may have known Sansa in the books. This is the show, and there is a very good chance that in the show, Roose has never seen Sansa before. If he has, it was when she was very young girl and obviously she has grown a lot since then. Yes, Roose did know Ned, Catelyn, and Robb, so he might notice a resemblance that could arouse his suspicions, but that’s all they would be – suspicions. He’s a cautious, practical man, and he knows that with the Boltons being the dominant military presence in Winterfell – far outnumbering whatever contingent of Vale knights Baelish brought – he has the advantage. As long as Sansa doesn’t give him an overt reason to challenge her (to be fair, poking around in the Winterfell crypts might qualify) I think that he would simply watch her to see if this “Alayne Stone” amounted to more than she claimed to be. Sansa, meanwhile, would be biding her time as well, waiting to make her move. She simply has to beat him to the punch.

  277. Mr Fixit,

I think Mel may have made a certain reveal about Jon Snow (either his parentage or that he is AA) and that is why she looks so surprised.

And I think that girl Ramsay is kissing is some poor would be victim who Theon ends up helping in his arc. I think they are skipping Fake Aryan and Santa goes to Winterfell via some other ruse.

I do like the idea of Santa/Theron scenes though, and her going North ensures that she will at least see Jon by season 6 and that could be a great reunion… especially if Santa should discover something interesting in the crypts.

  278. TheTouchOfFrost,

I want to see a roberts rebellion movie trilogy.

Game of Thrones: The Tourney of Harrenhal
The first movie in the trilogy would focus on the tourney. It would show the relationship of the Stark family think of the Game of thrones pilot mixed with a Knights Tale. The movie would end with Lyanna being kidnapped, allegedly. The final scene would be Brandon Stark dying in kings landing and Robert and Ned deciding they are going to war. Think fellowship of the Rings where you get introduced to all the characters and have lots of minor fights.

Game of Thrones: War of the Usurper
The second movie would begin with the battle of Summerhall. Then the battle of Ashford and the beginning of the siege of storms end. Then the battle of the bells and the movie would end with the battle of the Trident and the death of Rhaegar.
Think the Two Towers where you have a series of conflicts that conclude in a major battle.

    Game of Thrones:

    The Prince that was Promised

This movie would focus on the sack of Kingslanding. Davos saving Stannis in Storm’s End. The Tower of Joy. Stannis barely missing catching the remaining Targs at Dragonstone.
Think Return of the King with multiple epic endings Ned bringing home a bastard greeting his family, fade to black. Dany being born during a storm, fade to black. Robert sitting on his throne, fade to black. The white walkers waking up because of all the racket down south?!, fade to black.

  279. I’ve updated the album with descriptions. I think I got about everything. It includes information from filming pictures and other leaks.

    Wimsey,

Remember how I was hoping for a scene in Volantis with Tyrion and Varys equivalent to that scene with Haldon and Tyrion and the Red Priest in the town near Volantis, or with Benerro, Tyrion and his new forced companion in Volantis? It seems we’ll have some of that. That’s definitely a Red Priestess, and that’s the Long Bridge of Volantis.

  280. Winnie:
    Mr Fixit,

I think Mel may have made a certain reveal about Jon Snow (either his parentage or that he is AA) and that is why she looks so surprised.

She seems to be in the same location as those tents on fire. It could even be the same scene. Something nasty surprised her there. At least that’s my take on it.

  281. Kay,

Perhaps foreshadowing an alliance there… possibly even marriage. Not sure I fancy the match but it would make sense.

  282. My Top 5 questions still to be answered this season:

    1. Where does Varys end up after he and Tyrion part company? Back in King’s Landing to enact his ADwD epilogue (with the same targets?) A surprise appearance in Dorne to reveal a modified Aegon-like plot with Doran? Or rest of the season off?

    2. What the hell does Brienne get up to? Is she heading North? For what purpose? Will she link up with Sansa there after failing in the Vale? Are they going to to have her link up with Jaime or the BwB at any point or is that plot arc dead for sure? Will they kill her this season?

    3. Does Jon die in the finale or do they hold off until S6? And if he does, how will they go about doing it?

    4. What happens to Barristan? Is he taken out of the picture somehow mid-season or is he sent on some type of mission? There has to be a very good reason he’s not with Dany at Daznak?

    5. Now that we know for sure that Sansa’s in WF, what exactly is she going to do there? What’s the ultimate goal and who does she end up with at the end of the season? Back with LF? Theon? Stannis? Brienne? The Boltons?

Honourable mention: What’s Myrcella’s fate and how do the SS’s figure in? Is there a plot with her and Trystane and is he more than the innocent pawn he is in the books?

  283. Hodor’s Bastard:
    Turncloak,

No, I don’t believe the skeptics should capitulate just yet. Something is not sitting well with me either about this WF situation. I’m prepared to eat a few hats, but there may be some mummery going on in the north regarding that trailer.I’m holding out for a better offer.

Pic 31 clearly shows Vale soliders entering Winterfell. Sansa in WF is not some dream. Granted, there’s a couple of ways they can do this story. It’s not yet confirmed if she will be playing a fArya, Manderly, or a new role, but the facts are the facts
    http://imgur.com/a/gJlGx

  284. Kay: Just following her journey for the last four seasons – from I want the throne to I want to free slaves – it seems to me that she just might be waking up to the fact that feudalism is baaaaaaad. But that’s just MY opinion.

Historically, that is much too big a leap for people to make in one generation. Indeed, many people in medieval Europe lauded the feudal system as an alternative to slavery: serfs were not free, but they were not slaves, either. Abolishing serfdom came later: but under monarchical systems with nobody seizing on “hey, serfdom is bad!” and extrapolating to “hey, maybe this whole system of people inheriting their social status is bad!”

Social progress has followed what is know as mosaic evolution: one part at a time changes. What you would expect is to see monarchies “graduate” into constitutional monarchies, and possibly see expanded rights for merchants. That sort of “Whig vs. Tory” battle often does little for the rights of the “small folk” because both sides in the war agree on one thing: poor people are tools. (In other cases, however, Labour/Socialists made advances because Whigs or Tories wanted to make themselves look better than the other side!.)

We can see the same thing now. Indeed, how many people are there who will (even if begrudgingly) acknowledge that women and non-whites do have rights approaching or even equaling that of straight white men, yet in no way can extrapolate that to rights for homosexuals? Last generations’ heresy is this generation’s liberal cause and next generation’s traditional value: and, really, it’s not even that fast.

  285. See, I wasn’t trolling. Told you we’d get a trailer this 8th or 9th but nobody would listen.

  286. The Fighting Agathons:
    Wimsey,

I guess in the end it would seem super convenient to me, but I’m probably not the most unbiased viewer

In the book, Roose doesn’t recognise Arya, so…. Yeah. What about that

  287. Luka Nieto: That’s definitely a Red Priestess, and that’s the Long Bridge of Volantis.

Yeah, that is my first thought, but it was not 100% obvious. (If she had been raising the dead while juggling fireballs, then I’d say it was 100% obvious!) If I recall, then the two of us were exchanging cautious hopes that we’d see stuff like that this year: perhaps we can be a little more incautious with those hopes!

All in all, I have to say that I am cautiously optimistic given the two trailers. It seems like they have the story and some of the basic ingredients for the story firmly in mind.

And something to which we really should attend: this trailer won’t do much for viewing, but having HBO now available without paying for the whole package (which is not cheap!) easily might have a huge positive effect on the ratings. A lot of people who have been postponing viewing for as much as a year now might be watching this season. (Binge, people, BINGE!)

  288. Renly’s Peach,

Good spot. They appear to be little trinkets based around other Gods than the seven as you can see the flaming heart of R’hllor, what looks to be mini-weirwoods and the Black Goat of Qohor. Love little bits of detail like that 🙂

    Wimsey,

Empathy is the capacity to understand what another person is experiencing from within the other person’s frame of reference. Jamie has done on occasionss even before his hand getting lopped off. Why does that person have to be someone in a position deemed less desriable than the other persons? You could claim Dany has shown no empathy as she is on a personal crusade to free slaves but does not truly understand what it is to be one. This lack of empathy will be on full display this season as she seriously misjudges the feelings of a large majority of those seh has dominion over.

  289. Cersei’s Brain,

No. That, and the inn in the other trailer that they ride past, is not the inn of the crossroads. This one has a low and very slanted roof. The Inn at the Crossroads doesn’t; it’s like three floors high, too.

  290. Abyss,

What you’ve done so far is amazing, as always. Thank you so much!
I love some of your titles, too! “Kuh, kuh, kuh” especially cracked me up!

btw – Gray Worm Fighting 1 doesn’t work, for some reason.

  291. Winnie:
    Kay,

Perhaps foreshadowing an alliance there… possibly even marriage. Not sure I fancy the match but it would make sense.

Could be. An “alliance” is almost a foregone conclusion with one having dragons and the other menaced by White Walkers! But an alliance like any eventual marriage, if it happens, would be just a bit of an epilogue, it doesn’t affect the main journey too much for either character. Also, perhaps there will not be any “marriage”. Perhaps Jon will make his home somewhere in the north, and Daenerys in Essos? In any case, the journey is more important for the two characters.

Wimsey: Historically, that is much too big a leap for people to make in one generation.

True. But for show purposes, let’s not stretch it over centuries! 🙂 Plus, slavery was abolished in the US within a short time, at least legally, though in reality the battle was long-drawn out.

  292. I can’t be the only person who loves the books AND the fact that the show is departing from them in many ways (although it will take the last books to really know how many storylines are simply not yet published but intended and passed to D&D in some fashion). I am practically giddy that I won’t think I know what will happen.

Grey Worm is deader than a door nail, which makes me sad. Looks like Daario gets a nasty hit in the pit. Jaime is done this year, and I’ll be sorry for it, especially as Bronn will likely go with him. And would someone PLEASE get Jorah laid before the end.
I am beyond disinterested in Sansa’s storyline. I’ve said before that I hope to have my mind changed on that. For now, I still feel “Yes yes, you dyed your hair and wore black, you’re so badass, what a shock.” *yawn* What a waste if she is the cause of Littlefinger’s demise.
The return of Jaqen H’ghar (or whichever character he takes), and Arya’s training is what I’m most looking forward to.
  293. King Tommen,

    1. I think the first two options are the likeliest. He’ll either end up in KL or maybe he’ll be revealed as Doran’s co-plotter. I doubt he’ll disappear midway through the season.

    3. Jon is a mystery. Both scenarios would work. I’d like the Ides (or its equivalent) this season though.

    4. Wasn’t there some kind of speculation, based on Dany’s wedding dress, that Barristan will be around her at the end of the season, only not at Daznak’s for whatever reason (guarding dragons maybe?). Though, in this trailer she seems to have the same dress at a slave auction in what is presumably an earlier episode… so who knows.

  294. Pigeon,

I’m with you on loving the books but also really looking forward to what the show does this season and onward! But do not understand you presumption about Jaime. More?

  295. D&D look as if they’ve bundled chunks from other characters into their new arc for Sansa. I’ve not seen elements from ‘the infamous missing character’ yet, but it seems to make sense of D&D bringing in some of those into whatever’s planned for Sansa’s arc. That would add to Sansa’s trip to the Dark Side.

There’s a snippet of a prone, defenceless Pod being caught as ‘piggy in the middle’ between two riders. Things don’t look good there. However, it could be a turning point in Brienne’s arc, to go where I thought the show would. Again, it’s taking elements from ‘the infamous missing character’, applying them in another way.

As we don’t appear to be having a certain ‘someone’ appear, I prefer calling her ‘the infamous missing character’.

  296. FWIW all of Tristan Snow’s initial intell appears to be totally legit (King’s Landing stuff). Just of course not his subsequent derailment into speculation … but at least half of the scenes he described months ago have been shown in these trailers

  297. Grand maester giz: As we don’t appear to be having a certain ‘someone’ appear, I prefer calling her ‘the infamous missing character’.

Could easily just be Saladhor Salladan and his ships and etc

  298. Isn’t Dany’s speech about the fact that the Targs were a level above the nobles for hundreds of years rather than one of them. With Robert one of the noble houses was raised above the others and now there’s no balance and viciously competing houses, conflict and chaos. So she’s talking about breaking that cycle by being in charge.

  299. Wimsey,

Fun! Regardless of how it plays out, I’m looking forward to this season just because it must have been an amazing challenge to adapt.

Isn’t there a secret passageway into WF that Bran knew about via the crypts or the tower? It has often been debated that Stannis will discover and use this as he attacks WF. Just wondering….

Anyway, just for pure re-speculation sake….I’ll play the game…

If Sansa is indeed travelling with the Vale party of mummery, past the Neck, past Moat Cailin, then I believe LF has already made a deal with some Northern Lords and the Northern Conspiracy (LF-style) has begun. It’s a trojan horse scenario (that I don’t really believe in, but oh well). The objective is to get into Winterfell. Sansa is not amalgamating Manderley nor Lady Dustin nor fArya, but she will be smuggled or snuck into WF in the latter half of the season via some means. She assimilates into the WF environment under the watchful eye of other “guests” who are attending the planning the “defense” of WF/north from Stannis. Then Sansa stumbles into and re-meets Theon/Reek…..

All things look toward Roose being defeated from within before Stannis arrives (which is a strong option in the books) OR Roose discovers the mummery and all hell breaks loose within and Sansa gets discovered and makes a break for it with Theon…and JUMPS!….with the Stannis machine approaching.

  300. Side issue….. Has anyone seen Vikings Season 3? Ian Beattie lasts quite a long time, don’t you agree? How on earth did he find the time, I wonder?

  301. Pigeon,

I’m curious to know why you say

    Bronn, and especially Jaime

are gonna be dying this season. I can get some vibes off the first one, but the latter?

  302. Hodor’s Bastard,

I think that the one spanner in these works is that

it looks like Sansa is riding in through the front gates. Now, that does sneak her into things, obviously. (And this is amusingly ironic: the putative evidence that Sansa was there because the Boltons are greeting someone important and that had to be Sansa will sort of be true: they are greeting someone important, Sansa is with that someone, and they have no idea that Sansa is there.) My thought is that if she is there, then she will be instigating some mischief: and that she’ll probably be taking the role of incidental characters from the book like Manderly, Lady Dustin, etc. In general, I expect that they will use existing elements with established characters rather than do something completely novel.

Of course, I’m skeptical that the Northern Conspiracy is in the books, so I’m equally skeptical that it will be in the TV show. The big problem I have is that GRRM has already had Jon refuse the North: and having Jon later change his mind would basically undue that important bit of character development. My thought is that the real “Northern Conspiracy” is to seat Rickon either as King in the North or Lord of Winterfell. And as we’ve discussed, I expect both Sansa and Arya (Ninja Queen of Winterfell anyone?) to offer alternative plans….

Renly’s Peach: It makes absolutely zero sense any way you look at it.

Add to that the one High Septon is a tool of the Lannisters who Littlefinger would know to not trust, and given that the next is a religious fanatic who would demand that Sansa present herself to satisfy the Church’s conditions for annulment AND probably also to answer to the charge of regicide, this is not going to be a mail-order situation. (Ah, religion: it is hard to tell when it worse when it is hypocritical or when it is sincere! :D)

  303. Hodor’s Bastard,

Do you think it is possible

for Brienne to be the one who helps her out from Winterfell? I mean the shot we get is her in front of a gate (?) in snow. Books have Theon and FArya jumping in the snow. And show casting call tells us Brienne is in cahoots with a serving woman. I always thought that might be how Brienne tries to get in The Eyrie to get to Sansa, but it might be same scenario at Winterfell.
  304. Luka Nieto,

Like the collection of snapshots! Ta-much!

The one where you state Dany looks shocked at the pit, Dany isn’t in the middle of the arena. Look again. She’s under shade.
I’d hazard a guess at a kerfuffle around the back of the canopy causes the response.

  305. asdf,

Salidor Shan right now would be considered already on team stannis unless stannis has two diffrent board pieces ?

  306. I wonder what the Bolton’s would do with Littlefinger if he got caught trying to pull one over on them. This is Game of Thrones, things can’t keep going his way forever.

  307. Cersei’s Brain,

Yeh it seems like she’s next to the same wagon in the snow and when it’s nice out , she’s at hot pies Pizza Hut , it seems like she’s moving locations but she chops at that wagon than is next to it with pod in snow , winter is coming

  308. Hodor’s Bastard,
    Tormund’s Woman,

Here is the reason why I think that we should think in a different direction. Think back to the first trailer and the song that they used: Bowie’s Heroes. That song actually is a brilliant theme for this season. If we look at the other characters, then we can see this (using deliberately EPIC! language worthy of a WWF match):

Jon is not going be Lord Commander of the Night Watch, he’s going to Save the World of Men including the former enemies of the Night Watch; Daeny is not just angling to become Queen of Westeros, she is going to Save the World of Men from itself by stamping out slavery and elevating levels of egalitarianism perhaps as high up as 19th Century Russia ( 😛 ); Cersei is not just going to Rule as Regent, she is going to rise to Tywinette Lannister Regina to Crush all potential opposition to the Lannister “Dinastee” for generations to come; Brienne is not just the Shield Maiden, she’s going to rise to Ser Brienne the Patron Saints of Honoring Oaths to the Dead; Arya is not just going to learn to defend herself, she is going to become Ninja Queen of Lupine Revenge.

Now, granted, Tyrion and Theon are going to be trying to salvage themselves: but Sansa is not in their type of straits; she’s actually doing better than she’s ever done.

So, to that long-winded and overly cliched end (I’m covered in hair and my brows are an inch thicker just having typed it!), shouldn’t we expect Sansa to be the Hero (just for one day)? And, if so, then how might B&W have modified existing threads OR come up with new ones that will let Sansa rise to such a level? Somehow, I just see her skulking about Winterfell or winding up in need of rescue instead of being the instigator as contrary to the story being told.

    (Whatta you say….) 😉

  309. King Tommen,

    4. Well, really the reason Barristan’s not at Daznak’s Pit is because he’s the only one of Dany’s crew who would recognise Tyrion. So the writers have probably come up with some random reason for him not to be there in order to hold back on that reveal.
  310. Tormund’s Woman,

Geez, that’s a lot of merging storylines! Character congestion! My head’s gonna splode! 🙂

    I love the snow though!

Seriously, is Brienne the sneaky type? Is she following the Vale party of mummery to WF? Maybe. I’m skeptical that she can also pull off a Winterfell mummery though. Your guess is as good as mine. Really…a server woman? This is crazy.

    Snow!

  311. Ok… for those of us that are willing to accept that Sansa is in Winterfell but refuse to believe/want to believe that Sansa is fArya.

What about… NO fArya at all? Just The Vale and Robin with his buddies Littlefinger and his daughter going to ally with the Boltons against.. Lannisters, or Stannis, or whoever – who the hell other than GRRM and Littlefinger knows what Littlefinger is really up to? And… drama -Reek not giving away Sansa. Then she does something (like goes to the crypts, or pisses off Robin) and gets found out (hopefully after some yummy Frey pies) and then Reek rescues Sansa – not a willing fArya victim, but a Martyr betrayed by crap. The Pink Letter needs to happen for me with Sansa instead (Jon gets killed because he’s a dumbass who drops the Wildlings FOR the Pink Letter, that’s IMPORTANT dangit)

but otherwise I’m TOTALLY good with it….

  312. Oh, and the chick cast as Smith/ Brothel Goddess is easy… some Brothel in Volantis has a sick idea of the “seven” and she’s the one representing the smith 🙂

  313. Some guy:
My guess on the Sansa thing is that she is going to take over the role of Manderly and pretty much be the face of northern conspiracy. I dont think it will be revealed who she is until towards the end of the season. My guess is the Boltons will just think she is LFs niece Alayne.

But Theon will know. Not unlike the Faux-Arya storyline.

  314. Lady Wolfsbane,

My guess is that you saw

fArya in the trailer. Who the hell she is, I have no idea: but even in that brief scene, she had the look that TV and film always uses for a woman did not want to be there doing that with Ramsay. (The actress is actually similar to Rose Leslie in cheekbone and chin construction, but it’s obviously not her.)

(Ramsay, on the other hand, looks like he is having fun. And that makes me shudder….)

  315. Hodor’s Bastard:
    Wimsey,

Fun! Regardless of how it plays out, I’m looking forward to this season just because it must have been an amazing challenge to adapt.

I’ll be really pissed if this happens because I’m tired of the Northern lords being eliminated from the show.

And has anyone forgotten the main person who betrayed Ned Stark and led to his death?!? One thing that pisses me off the most about Sansa being with Littlefinger is that I don’t know if she knows what he did and just accepted it, is secretly plotting her revenge, or really has no clue what happened between her father & Littlefinger in the Throne Room? If the show lets Littlefinger take the place of the Northern lords and ‘rescues’ the north from the Boltons for his own use – I’m gonna be just as pissed as if Sansa married Walder Frey!
  316. LordDavos,

Did you miss the fact that someone was pulling strings, for Robert, then Joffrey and now Tommen? Tywin was a grand puppet-master but, alas, his time is over. Cersei thinks she can pick up where he left off, and do better. We shall see. We shall see.

It seems as though Dany likes to play ‘Spin’, which, to be frank, she’s not shown much skill at previously.

  317. Winnie,

🙂 I’m in danger of being a hypocrite since I basically acquiesced with that last post. I have no more yarbles. Oh well, if ya can’t beat ’em….play well in the sandbox.

    Wimsey,
Kudos to the creative aspirations and possibilities but frankly I thought “Heroes”, especially the rendition we heard, was somewhat cynical. Sansa ain’t Queen Nymeria yet but maybe their is something in the WF crypts that might inspire her?

  318. Lady Wolfsbane:
Oh, and the chick cast as Smith/ Brothel Goddess is easy… some Brothel in Volantis has a sick idea of the “seven” and she’s the one representing the smith

That’s as reasonable as anything else.

  319. Cersei’s Brain:
    Pigeon,

I’m with you on loving the books but also really looking forward to what the show does this season and onward! But do not understand you presumption about

    Jaime.

    More?

    Renly’s Peach:
    Pigeon,

I’m curious to know why you say

    Bronn, and especially Jaime

are gonna be dying this season.

I can get some vibes off the first one, but the latter?

    My theory is that

Jaime will be Ellaria’s vengeance for Oberyn, whether directly or not. The drastic change of his storyline taking he and Bronn to Dorne, the suggestion that he may be fighting Areo in the trailer (we only see his back, but he looks like a big man of Areo’s stature), getting knocked down and taken to the palace under guard….he seems to be ‘absorbing’ some of the Oakheart and Swann roles. I don’t think he’s as dumb to meet his fate as Oakheart did, however I think he may die attempting to save Myrcella.

There has been suggestion that big upsets are happening in S5, and I think

Jaime fits that. He’s turned softer throughout the series (think of he and Brienne), which may make his death a wrench to viewers, while he will likely die doing something redemptive for his story in the book of the kings guard.

And I can’t see Bronn not going down with him.

I hope I am way off, truly!

  320. Hodor’s Bastard,

I was rolling with it! I mean Sansa is at Winterfell. And (knock on wood), there is a very small and very fantastical possibility that she might even be Ramsey’s bride!

Somehow Brienne employing the help of an old Winterfell serving woman to help Sansa out of the castle when shit hits the fan, as I suspect it will, didn’t seem quite irrational when I typed it LOL. I mean she is looking for Catelyn’s daughters and following the Vale contingent would makes sense if she knows Sansa is with them.

  321. Wimsey,

I’m not sure if you’re just not paying attention to the replies each time you say this but that girl with Ramsay in the trailer is Charlotte Hope (Myranda). Several people have paused it and confirmed it as her.

She’s got a little grimace on her face and Ramsay is definitely nuzzling up on her but it’s not like the show hasn’t established them as sex partners already and she could be perturbed with him for a number of reasons.

To this point, there is very little to indicate that a FArya exists on the show, and in fact they’ve laid a lot of groundwork to make it possible for them to excise that particular book plot completely.

  322. Ali Kat,

Yeah…there is that debate. I pointed the middle finger at Sansa after Mycah, after Lady, after Ned, and especially after every pro-Joff/defending-Joff comment…but her tale is indeed a growth tale from naive to player. Her time with beasts (Joff, Hound, LF, etc) seems to be bizarrely working in her favor. Is she escalating too quickly though? Like Winnie mentioned above, I also think LF’s shenanigans may backfire….perhaps for Sansa too. However, I do NOT like her being in close proximity to Ramsay. This is off the charts.

  323. Tormund’s Woman,

You are a stronger woman than I, my friend. My soul cannot handle the thought of Sansa as Ramsay’s bride. I’ll go as far as covert WF infiltration but no further.

  324. Lady Wolfsbane,

Do you – do you think it would be sad if Tyrion picked “The Mother” goddess, and then just started monologuing to her when they were alone about never knowing his mother?

  325. I keep going back and watching the trailer and just can’t believe how far we’ve come with the show. I mean, it honestly still feels like yesterday that I was geeking out with excitement over the first episode of the series (a show that, at the time, featured Sean Bean and Mark Addy as its leads!).

And here we are, several years(!) later, seeing the events of AFFC and ADWD adapted (plus a great deal more). It’s rather disconcerting how quickly time flies.

  326. Why does everyone assume that they’re even doing the wedding? They’re the new Wardens of the North and no mention of Ramsay marrying has been alluded to. It’s also the first time since the Starks that Winterfell is being legally held and occupied by a warden of the north. Surely the other lords would come regardless of weather or not Ramsay is marrying fArya. I mean, fucking Stannis is at the wall with a shit ton of troops, obviously it would make sense for the Northmen to meet their new Liege Lord and rally to deal with Stannis.

Looking at it from a purely theatrical perspective and not a book one; TV show could get away with this. Ramsay is a Bolton now, Roose is now the warden and will occupy Winterfell, that’s been established. All the audience needs to know is: “Huh..that bolton guy is the new lord and now all the other lords are being rallied to winterfell :V”

  327. Hodor’s Bastard:
    Tormund’s Woman,

You are a stronger woman than I, my friend. My soul cannot handle the thought of Sansa as Ramsay’s bride. I’ll go as far as covert WF infiltration but no further.

I’d like to see Sansa marry him and then stab him dead on their wedding night.

  328. decaffeinated,

Roose Bolton is the new Warden of the North. If he called his bannermen to Winterfell in order to wage war against the Ironborn and Stannis, they’d be obligated by their oaths to attend.

  329. Ali Kat: I’ll be really pissed if this happens because I’m tired of the Northern lords being eliminated from the show.

They are all incidental characters with no importance in and of themselves; only their actions as a group are important, and then as it affects the main characters. For film and TV, the Greek Chorus is a much more efficient way to handle such characters. (That’s not an option for a book, of course: but that only means that GRRM probably did it this way because he was writing a novel and not a screenplay.)

King Tommen: I’m not sure if you’re just not paying attention to the replies each time you say this but that girl with Ramsay in the trailer is Charlotte Hope (Myranda). Several people have paused it and confirmed it as her.

No, I missed those. Of course, there are already several hundred posts here, already, and I am not trying to keep up with them all! OK, if that is her, then that’s telling. (I don’t remember her looking like that, but: 1) it is a brief shot, and 2) I’m not positive I have a good memory of what she looks like. (I thought that she had a rounder face and curlier hair: but perhaps I’m misremembering.)

Hodor’s Bastard: Kudos to the creative aspirations and possibilities but frankly I thought “Heroes”, especially the rendition we heard, was somewhat cynical.

The song is not a particularly cynical one, although it could be construed as a sad one. And I didn’t think that the use of the song was supposed to be cynical or ironic. After all, the song tells the same story as the two books do, and it just seems very improbable that they would choose a song telling the same story as the source material and mean it in some cynical or ironic fashion. Also, getting the rights to Bowie’s version would be a good deal more expensive than getting the rights to a cover!

(Bowie was trying to rip himself back up from drug addictions at the time and his career had taken a bit of a downturn from it’s heyday; in reminiscing about how he’d made himself a star once before and how he could be again, it sort of gets both the Tyrion/Theon angle AND the Daeny/Jon/Arya angle.)

((I saw Bowie do this live in 1983. It was powerful for lack of any other word.))

(((Bowie is a god. I think that he’s Voldemort in disguise.)))

Oh, right, Thrones. I do think that there will be some “inspiration” but I also think that there will be some plan. After all, Littlefinger is involved: and he never does anything without a plan (or three) in mind, usually involving chaos and destruction. What will be interesting to see is how much Sansa follows and how much she leads. I honestly have no good intuition here: even if they are transferring Sansa’s Crows storyline to Winterfell, then the plot elements are going to be very different.

  330. Dianyla,

Yeah, I hope she puts that stabby necklace to good use at some point!

    Mr Fixit,
    Pigeon,

Maybe I’m confused but in the shot (pic 51) where Dany, Missandei, Jorah and Daario are in the Pit, weren’t Hizdahr and Tyrion also on the Pit floor as well in the previously-released pics? I think there is something to that.

Maybe Hizdahr, with slave Tyrion unwillingly at his side, leads Dany & co to the slaughter at the center of the Pit, then abandons them, since he and the SotH are working together. All is lost as the SotH close in, then…..a shadow.

Oh, Hizdahr! We knew you would betray Dany!

  331. Darren:
    decaffeinated,

Roose Bolton is the new Warden of the North. If he called his bannermen to Winterfell in order to wage war against the Ironborn and Stannis, they’d be obligated by their oaths to attend.

That’s sort of what I was getting at. :p

  332. Luka Nieto,

It does indeed. I replaced two of the GIFs with 1080p versions and they look almost perfect. The little rest of artifact comes from the GIF compression (now way I could upload as APNG, the files are way to large). Don’t know if I will replace all, they still take a lot of time to upload, but I thinking about it.

  333. I don’t see why it matters whether or not the Boltons or any of the other Lords present in Winterfell recognize Sansa because Theon certainly would (they grew up together in Winterfell), making all of the other analysis of who would recognize and who wouldn’t moot unless Theon has abandoned his Reek identity by the time she arrives, which seems extremely unlikely. If Sansa is in Winterfell under a false identity, either as fArya or Alayne, I think the Boltons either need to be aware of who she really is or Theon really needs to act in a very un-Reek-like manner.

Since it’s now beyond question that Sansa is going to Winterfell (imo), we have to figure out how she could either be there outside of Cersei’s knowledge or with Cersei knowing and allowing her to be there. I find it highly unlikely that Cersei wouldn’t demand Sansa’s head if she knew where she was. She believes that Sansa was involved in Joff’s murder and she’s not the forgiving type. Also, I don’t buy the “married to Ramsay / a fate worse than death” argument. Would Cersei have accepted Tywin’s plan to send Tyrion to the Night’s Watch or would she have plotted to have him killed before he got there? Why would Sansa be any different? I think Sansa has to be in Wintefell beyond Cersei’s knowledge.

Here’s where my thought gets tinfoil-y. lol I think Roose will know Sansa’s true identity when she’s in Winterfell and that he’ll tell Ramsay (Reek will already know).

We all know Littlefinger’s position on chaos and how he uses his enemies (basically everyone) against one another. Why not use the Vale to play the Boltons (and the North) against the Lannisters (who most of them hate anyway)? Roose Bolton was afraid of Tywin, not Cersei, and Roose has proven that he’ll abandon a lost cause when it suits his needs, so why wouldn’t he sign on with Littlefinger and the Vale in order to secure the North, drive out the Ironmen, defeat Stannis and then turn on Cersei (who by this point will have proven she has no idea what she’s doing) when the time was right? Having the rightful heir to Winterfell (and a secret Stark) and the Vale as allies could make a Winter coup very alluring. From Roose’s perspective, the best thing about it is that he wouldn’t have to betray the Crown until after Stannis is dealt with, when the North would be secured and plunged into the depths of Winter.

Of course, Littlefinger will turn on Roose, probably to Stannis’ (and his own, of course) benefit ala the presumed Manderly betrayal in Winds, but that is his nature, after all.

I don’t think that this would require Sansa to marry Ramsay (now anyway) and marrying Ramsay (at least in ADWD, he’s the Lord of Winterfell) to Littlefinger’s niece would be highly suspicious, so it seems like it’s unlikely to happen, but allying with her as an asset to unite the North against the Lannisters someday could make sense to Roose Bolton, especially if his understanding was that she was under Littlefinger’s thumb.

Long story short, my crackpot idea is that the Boltons work with Littlefinger and the Vale to hide Sansa because they eventually plan to betray the Lannisters. Long before they can ever do that, Littlefinger and Sansa will betray them to help Stannis / other Northerners.

Please note that this has nothing to do with what will happen in the books (though Lady Dustin does hint that she thinks Roose might betray the Lannisters at some point). lol Please also note that I just slapped this together, so if I’m completely full of it and / or completely wrong, I’m not going to get too upset about it. lol

  334. Jared: Roose Bolton: “Stannis Baratheon has an army at Castle Black. He means to take the North.”

    *chills* Word up!

Charlotte Hope confirmed on Twitter that is Myranda in the trailer.

I see Sansa is wearing the same bloody cloak from when she fled King’s Landing in the crypts of Winterfell. *7 sighs*

“This. one’s. on. top, then. that. one’s. on. top. and. on. and. on. it. spins.”

When Reek and Alayne’s eyes meet, I will bawl.
The Sons of the Harpy are scary af. #holdme
Dany, Sansa, and Brienne…tears are coming.

  335. ctid,

I don’t know, it isn’t THAT high-res. 😀 – Sorry for all the typos in my last post, btw, I really should sleep now…

  336. Theory time: I know what the Vale crew is doing in Winterfell! Littlefinger was sent by Cersei to back up the Boltons against Stannis. Sansa remains undercover. Theon recognizes her. Sansa and Littlefinger essentially take up a Manderly/Dustin role. Shit gets real.
  337. Wimsey: They are all incidental characters with no importance in and of themselves; only their actions as a group are important, and then as it affects the main characters.

Finally, someone says it well. And other than Wyman Manderly (who could be easily added in Season 6 if the Davos mission remains intact, as a one episode character, and because, dammit, it’s gotta be BRIAN BLESSED!), they’re a bunch of non-entities. Glover, Hornwood, Maege Mormont, all basically non-characters.

  338. Luka Nieto (sorry, I’m too lazy to go back and find the actual post):

Good spot on that lack of shadow on that Unsullied! I was wondering why (and possibly even a bit worried…) Tyrion wasn’t in that picture.
  339. Annara SnowDany’s speech makes no freaking sense. She’s against slavery, but definitely not against feudalism or hereditary monarchy – hello, she wants to take the throne according to the rule of that system! So what the hell does that even mean? You could add “Targaryen” to the list of families on the “wheel”.

Why, oh, why must they keep writing stupid, OOC and nonsensical lines for Dany?,

Nowhere in that speech is feudalism, and Dany being pro/against it mentioned. Please go cry on westeros.org or something.

  340. I posted the 1080p album on Reddit. If you want to upvote it so that more people see it, that’d be great 😉

    Darren,

    Huh… no?

Theon doesn’t reveal Jayne’s identity in the books to people that he could. Not Ramsay, granted. But he does not tell him that Bran and Rickon are alive (he only does this in the show before he becomes Reek and because he thinks Ramsay is a good guy saving him, working for his sister.) Reek keeps secrets. Even from Ramsay. It’s not out of character.

  341. Luka Nieto,

Did you see this bit of casting news I found btw?

    Greenjones

As Lady Wolfsbane suggests above her character is likely one of seven in a brothel with prostitutes for each of the Seven gods. I think this would be the sort of sacrilegious thing in KL the Sparrows would want to shut down…

  342. The Selyse scene has me the most intrigued/concerned.

She’s either seeing the truth about the threat that is coming their way or she’s seeing the death of Stannis. If it’s the latter then I will be in a decade(s) long period of mourning soon.
Only other possibility I can think of is she’s seeing Shireen burned. Wun Wun killing someone isn’t enough to get that look on her face. It’s something more.
  343. Luka Nieto,

I agree with your point, but in the books Ramsay does know that Bran and Rickon are alive, after all he killed the miller’s boys together with Theon.

  344. Pigeon:
I can’t be the only person who loves the books AND the fact that the show is departing from them in many ways (although it will take the last books to really know how many storylines are simply not yet published but intended and passed to D&D in some fashion). I am practically giddy that I won’t think I know what will happen.

No you are not the only one. The book storyline wouldn’t make great TV. And if George manages to finish the ASOIAF at some point we will get TWO amazing endings 🙂

  345. Luka Nieto,

I think I’ve figured out why there would be prostitutes pretending to be the Seven.

As I speculated previously the High Septon (Paul Bentley) will deposed by the Sparrows after Cersei gives them intel about his proclivities in 503, essentially giving them free reign to take over the Faith. This would merge the events of the book High Septon’s killing with Septon Ollidor’s defrocking.

Given that a prostitute playing one of the Seven is also in 503, I think it’s very likely that the High Septon will seeing seven prostitutes, each pretending to be one of the Seven, when the Sparrows accost him and depose him. THAT would be something corrupt enough for the Sparrows to motivate the Sparrows to unseat him.

  346. Greenjones,

Seven ladies of the night for the seven gods. I like the imagery! Now I really want the “Smith” to wield a little hammer called Nutcracker.

  347. Greenjones,

I think your speculation is on point.

It does seem like they will amalgamate the story of Septon Ollidor, who was after all a member of the Most Devout and by all accounts the next High Septon, with the demise of the current High Septon himself. I’m beginning to like this change. It’s not such a big deal, especially considering the aforementioned amalgamation (I didn’t remember Ollidor’s story.) I have no problem with it, as long as Cersei is still involved, tipping off the Sparrows.

BTW, I’m not a religious man, and I certainly don’t believe in the concept of heresy or sacrilege, but still… even I would call that blasphemous. The High Septon bedding whores… and not only that, but whores disguised as the Gods?

There is only one thing to say: Holy fuck that’s messed up!

  348. Crabber’s Son:

This movie would focus on the sack of Kingslanding. Davos saving Stannis in Storm’s End. The Tower of Joy. Stannis barely missing catching the remaining Targs at Dragonstone.
Think Return of the King with multiple epic endings Ned bringing home a bastard greeting his family, fade to black. Dany being born during a storm, fade to black. Robert sitting on his throne, fade to black. The white walkers waking up because of all the racket down south?!, fade to black.

sounds great, really does. Each would work well as their own self-contained story.

Only i’d hope they were a little more ambitous than “think LOTR”!

  349. Dogs,

Wow, check out Greenjones’s idea – I think he/she might be right. It’s more upsetting that way, and when does GoT NOT go for the upsetting route?

    decaffeinated,
Here Here! We’re getting a bonus

wedding Tommen so who really needs the Bolton one?

    Greenjones,
    Luka Nieto,

Oh, that would give me so much more sympathy for the High Sparrow… whoa…. I’m not religious, but DANG, even I’d get righteous on that guy…

  350. Hodor’s Bastard,

About the shot of Dany&co in the middle of the Pit:

You can see that Tyrion has actually been erased from the picture for the trailer. If you look closely to the Unsullied on the left you can see that he’s probably been added to replace T. It’s pretty obvious when you know where to look at. Hizdahr was probably standing close to Tyrion and got removed too.

Also, for everyone who thinks that Sansa being in WF and possibly under her true identity is a problem:

I don’t see it. The only person who wants her head is Cersei, and we know she’ll end up having close to no power this season. The only thing it would take to work around this is having Cersei find out a bit too late. Or you know, never. There, problem solved.
  351. Luka Nieto,

Not revealing Jeyne to the Northern Lords is keeping a secret for Ramsay, not keeping one from him. Theon was able to keep secrets from the random people questioning him at the Dreadfort, but can Reek keep secrets from Ramsay now?
  352. Rhaegar,

Wouldn’t that make them 8 storylines? I mean, the Wall story becomes 3 separate storylines: 1) Jon, 2) Stannis 3) Sam.
Maybe if we’re lucky we’ll get a Davos storyline as well by the end of the season

  353. Regarding the ultimate whereabouts of Brienne and Pod:

If they are following Sansa, could they possibly not only help her, but also Theon/Reek, escape? Then they cross paths with (gulp) Stannis. Or, an even crazier possibility, could they, not Davos, be the ones to go find and bring back Rickon? It doesn’t look like Davos is going anywhere. Or maybe Sam and Gilly go on a mission to retrieve Rickon instead of a trip to Oldtown?

Can’t wait to find out what happens.

  354. Flora Linden,

Oooo… at the very least, a Brienne scene or two of some kind could be thrown in to remind us that

Rickon exists – if we’re not getting Davos to remind us. That’d be a great use of them… sniffing out that trail while helping/looking for Sansa. I’m getting the feeling based on the trailer that maybe they’ll be our Yara/Asha eyes in Stannis’ camp to represent the common folk freezing in the ice. Boo to the idea of no Asha…

but I can see it as a possibility…

  355. Annara Snow
Dany’s speech makes no freaking sense. She’s against slavery, but definitely not against feudalism or hereditary monarchy – hello, she wants to take the throne according to the rule of that system! So what the hell does that even mean? You could add “Targaryen” to the list of families on the “wheel”.

Why, oh, why must they keep writing stupid, OOC and nonsensical lines for Dany?,

Sam: This seems like a bit of an overreaction.

Seems obvious to me that Lannister, Baratheon and Stark are named because they helped overthrow and kill Aerys ending the Targaryen reign. And while the Tyrells were loyalists during Robert’s Rebellion they are now strongly allied with the Lannister/Baratheon “usurpers” so she lumps them in too.

The Martells aren’t included as they are still loyal to the Targs and the other houses aren’t that important.

    Or is that too simple?

Just hope they liven up what becomes a bit of a mind numbingly dragged out story for Dany in ADWD.

  356. Two things:

    1. Stannis’s tent isn’t necessarily on the way to Winterfell. The show’s Castle Black is much smaller and there isn’t exactly a King’s Tower. Also, it totally fits Stannis’s character to want to stay with his men in the tents. I wouldn’t rush to say that Melisandre joins Stannis on the march to Winterfell.

    2. Let’s talk about the weirdest shot in the trailer- Selyse. The burning of Shireen seems unlikely this early since it doesn’t seem like it’s going to happen in the near future in the books (and that particular storyline isn’t sure to catch up to the books). Stannis dying also sounds unlikely since Selyse shouldn’t be there to see it. Any other guesses?

  357. Jorn:
About the shot of Dany&co in the middle of the Pit:

Ah, I see that Luka Nieto noticed on that as well in his set. Odd. What a senseless trick, especially since they knew the prior shots including T and H in the Pit had been released. Something is intentionally awry here.

    jentario,
FtW or the events leading up to it

  358. jentario,

There are many essays that state Stannis will fake his death in order to conquer a Winterfell. Remember he tells Justin Massey to bring sellswords even “if he hears words of his death”. So Selyse can be crying about Stannis’ presumed death. Alternatively she could be the one who firsts recieves the pink letter

  359. Jorn: About the shot of Dany&co in the middle of the Pit:

That blunking out has been known since trailer-1.
The existence of guerrilla sneak peak stills is, I guess, expected to be unknown to the unsullied unsullied.

  360. Greenjones:
    Luka Nieto,

I think I’ve figured out why there would be prostitutes pretending to be the Seven.

I don’t recall seeing prostitutes dressed as the Seven in the trailer. Am I missing something?

  361. I had a post on moderation – dunno where it finally went, but I wanted to thank Greenjones for taking the brothel idea further. I love that angle, hope it happens just like that, very anti-righteous!

    jentario,
Well… ummm… could they get rid of

Val and replace her with Shireen as a bribe to Jon? OK, so not the pretty thing that Val was in the books… but still a “Princess”, and a way to tie the Wall to Stannis, if not the Wildlings. Or Shireen is offered to Tormund instead of the Alys Karstark wedding? Selyse doesn’t like Shireen, but that’s kinda insulting. Ooo… and then he says, “I don’t want no Princess, I want a Queen” – and Mel obliges by burning Selyse to make Shireen Queen.

Can you tell I REALLY want to see Seylse burn?

I’m evil and choosing to be blind on the subject…

  362. Turncloak,

Yep, the bit of casting info Greenjones found about a prostitute playing the Smith ! (at least that’s the most likely speculation at this point, in my eyes).

  363. Hodor’s Bastard,

If I recall correctly, the prior shots including T and H were not released, they leaked. In any case, the trailer is made for a much, much wider audience. It makes sense to hide something that happens this late in the season.

  364. We can only speculate why Alayne Stone is at Winterfell with a contingent of Vale soldiers in the show. This could be part of her Winds of Winter storyline after all…There’s a lot to like about this trailer, and I don’t want to indulge in Anti-Occam’s razor: “the simplest answer needs to be discarded in order to assert the most convoluted theories possible, so I can get angry at them.”

In any event, this will be a huge season for Maisie Williams. I’m much more invested in whether Arya’s storyline will receive enough time.

I’m worried that the Oldtown storyline’s been written out. We should have received an indication by now. I’m holding out hope (probably forlorn) that it will begin in episode 5 or 6.

Meanwhile, why make Tyene Sand the daughter of Ellaria Sand? Oberyn mentioned to Cersei that he had eight daughters, and even mentioned Elia Sand. Sigh. 33 long days remain until we can have any of our questions answered.

Will Brienne and Pod meet Gendry? (If only they were meeting LSH!)

I expect that Petyr Baelish is in King’s Landing, meeting with Lady Oleanna to discuss fArya.

Alayne Stone may be a stand-in for House Manderly, or simply as Alayne. To my knowledge, it has not been confirmed that House Manderly has been written out of the show, just that Wyman Manderly was not cast in Season 5. They could (and should) be included in Season 6, which will have to delve deep into Winds material by necessity. Unless Manderly ultimately does not matter. [Wylla Manderly + Rickon Stark otp?] Far too soon to speculate on Season 6, though. By then, Howland Reed could finally make an appearance, at least to clear up R=L=J. Or is Howland Reed already sowing chaos as the High Sparrow? Dun dun dun!

  365. Thomas,

    Breaking Bad.

Much smaller budget and obviously less epic in appearance, but that show had the best cinematography I have ever seen on television. It was utterly ridiculous. (And Better Call Saul has kept up the tradition with some brilliant camerawork).

Game of Thrones is very pretty, but that’s mostly a result of costuming, set design and special effects. They rarely (not never, but rarely) do anything particularly exceptional with the camera, although I’ll admit they’ve improved in that area every season.

  366. At this point, I’m assuming Selyse is collapsed in the snow because she’s watching Stannis depart and doesn’t want him to leave her at The Wall with its thugs and criminals and riffraff! That definitely makes sense doesn’t it? She’s a very unstable character.

  367. I much prefer this trailer to the first one – it looks a lot more epic.

I’m glad that this show, five seasons in, doesn’t have a sense of complacency. It is like Game of Thrones is always trying to top itself and that’s great.

  368. Galli,

Well, that’s far too plausible. 🙂 Leave me alone to play with my cracked pots and tinfoil. And it might be magnified IF

Mel goes with Stannis. I mean, it made sense for Mel to stay at the Wall with Jon – but if Jon goes to Hardhome… is he really going to leave HER in charge? I want Mel to stay at the Wall, but I dunno how to make it work with what we know may be happening…
  369. Grand maester giz,

Given how the show does things, it could be Ironborn ships, however, if Stannis is looking at the map with the north at the top, the ships are on the east coast (at either Hardhome or Eastwatch by the Sea)…book wise, that would mean they’re either Stannis’ pirate fleet (most likely), ships of the Nights’ Watch, or Slavers.

The tall pieces are most likely Nights’ Watch and/or Wildling forces, but the circle part of the piece kinda reminds me of the Arryn sigil, which I guess is in play now given Sansa’s new storyline.

  370. I believe Melisandre will go with the invading army. Stannis made a fatal mistake leaving Melisandre behind during his King’s Landing invasion. I don’t see him making the mistake a second time – Melisandre will be able to anticipate the position of Bolton forces and also strike fear into the hearts of the people on the march south, who would have known her reputation. I don’t see Melisandre remaining at Winterfell, whatever the outcome, but if Stannis is victorious, that only provides her with many more men with which to fight the Great Other.
However implausible it seems, I do believe that Melisandre will want to return to The Wall instead of bask in the glory of Stannis’ victory, and this will endear her to a lot of viewers. This will be the moment where she WILL be shown as having humane intentions, instead of self serving ones. But then, this is just a theory!

  371. Maester of Ceremonies:
    snip
In any event, this will be a huge season for Maisie Williams. I’m much more invested in whether Arya’s storyline will receive enough time.
    /snip

I think they’ll cut it down quite a bit as the book chapters CotC ( which plays out over two moons however long that is ) etc don’t make for very good television unfortunately. We know we will see some of that from production pics but it’ ll be truncated I’m sure (would love to see her running into “a familiar face to the reader but not to Arya” and the”deserter scene” – I still hope for BB which was a great shock moment but fear it got cut although it’s vital (?) for book Arya’s development). OTOH they are likely to extend it into TWoW story somewhat.

  372. Flora Linden,

If Briene of tarth kills stannis I’ll break my tv in a thousand pieces ? The thought just entered my mind thinking maybe if she helps reek and Sansa she’ll also get to avenge renley , my prediction for end game Briene and this is saying by wow and ados she’ll be the head commander of the kings guard . But if she kills stannis ? I know I’m just spitballin random theories , I’m surprised noone else thought that

  373. jentario,

    1. I would agree with that, but one of the promo pictures shows Stannis in his own ‘office’ at Castle Black.

    Hodor’s Bastard,

Thousands of people at most have seen those leaked filming pictures. Millions will watch the trailer. The marketing doesn’t revolve around us fanatics.

  374. I have definitely considered the possibility of Brienne killing Stannis if they cross paths but… and this is the crucial part… Melisandre could always bring Stannis back from the dead now she has seen a fellow Red Priest do so. It would be the game changer though and perhaps prove to Mel that she has backed the wrong champion.

  375. Grand maester giz,

    If Brienne

encounters Stannis, she may want to kill him at first, but Melisandre, or Sansa, or someone or something will convince her not to for the greater good. Brienne may go along with that reasoning, but no way will she pledge loyalty to Stannis, ever.

    Grand maester giz:

I’ll break my tv in a thousand pieces

What would make me break my TV in a thousand pieces is

Brienne and Jaime reuniting as combatants on the battlefield and having to fight each other.

    Grand maester giz:

my prediction for end game Briene and this is saying by wow and ados she’ll be the head commander of the kings guard

    That’s cool, but for who?

Despite Stannis and Dany’s plans and proclamations, I just can’t see either taking the throne.

The only viable candidates are Shireen, who may not survive Mel’s schemes; and Jon Snow, who considers himself a Stark and brother of the Night’s Watch. Who’s left?

Tommen, Myrcella/Trystane/fAegon and Margaery are doomed. Most likely Cersei, the Tyrells and Martells will tear the monarchy apart. Cersei might take the throne briefly before the end. (Although it might be cool to see a dark horse like Sansa, Tyrion or – if you really want to think outside the box – Brienne, take the prize.)

And as for “The Wars to Come”, I hope

the second Dance With Dragons actually involves the Lannisters. Forget the Targaryens/Blackfyres. Give me the Cleaving of Casterly Rock.

    #WarOfTheLannisterSiblings FTW.

  376. Galli,

Brienne interestingly has a reason to hate both Stannis and the Boltons. If she goes north there will be conflict either way.

  377. I must have my Manderly.

Though if Sansa says the mummer’s farce lines, I’ll happily take that as a consolation prize.

  378. Premislaus: Nowhere in that speech is feudalism, and Dany being pro/against it mentioned.

American Southerners try this tact all the time: 19th century abolitionists didn’t believe that Africans were equal to Europeans, therefore they were just as bad as the Southerners who enslaved Africans. It is nonsense. The world is not partitioned into egalitarianism vs. slavery: it is a continuum. The history of increasing egalitarianism has been one step at a time. Daeny is pushing for that step. Expecting one generation to recognize all the inequities in their world is foolishness: instead, what you have are those willing to take everything for granted (the Lannisters, the Tyrells, the Baratheons), and those willing to reconsider some things (Daeny, Jon). The idea that primogeniture is flawed is beyond any of their reckonings at this point.

Again, Voltaire nailed it on the head: the perfect is the enemy of the good, and truly the enemy of the improved.

  379. What if Ramsay tells Jon in the pink letter that he has his sister Sansa? Perhaps she gets found out in her scheming.

  380. Hodor’s Bastard:

As bloodthirsty as it sounds, I really love the idea of Sansa using Littlefinger and then killing him because I don’t want to believe that she’s willing to ignore what he did to her family. My thoughts are that she doesn’t know – which I could believe more in the book. Her relationship with Tyrion, Shae, and Margaery on the show was so different than in the book, I’m fairly sure someone would have told her why she shouldn’t trust Littlefinger. I don’t blame her for using him to get out of King’s Landing. Her life was at risk for Joffrey’s murder and she knew that. (and neither on the show or in the book did she know Littlefinger was in charge of her rescue) But her going along with him to do anything with/to Winterfell has to be a case of her using him and then betraying him like he did her father or I’ll have second thoughts about her. Right now I want to think she’s like Jon and Arya and that she has learned what not to do by her parents/Robb’s mistakes. But if she is going to allow Littlefinger play her too, I’ll be disappointed. Like most people, I’ve grown to love Sansa as much as the rest of the Starks so I want her to return to her family roots in the end.

I think its so funny that the show never addresses her or Arya finding out about Rickon & Bran but she was devastated by Robb/Catelyn’s death. Tywin made the statement that Theon had murdered her younger brothers and even she mentions that she’s the heir if Robb falls so people are using her but she never mentions Bran/Rickon on the show, only Arya and Robb. Its made the great divide between their story lines even more obvious. Fans frequently say she’s now the ‘Queen’ in the North but she’s really not because Rickon and Bran are alive. I guess people think she’s the 2nd oldest but I think females aren’t in line unless there were no males alive

  381. decaffeinated:

According to the book, the only claim they have to Winterfell is through fArya. I don’t think its a given that Roose would get Winterfell while Sansa is still alive if they didn’t use fArya. Granted they think Rickon and Bran are dead but they know Sansa was alive when Robb died so therefore the castle/grounds belong to her. In the books, the fact that the Starks were rebelling and ‘traitors’ to the crown doesn’t indicate they lose Winterfell even Tywin says Sansa is the key to Winterfell. At no point does Roose or Tywin indicate that Roose gets Winterfell so unless the show ignores that rule I think fArya or Sansa would have to come into play. We’re also ignoring the fact that some distant Stark relative would inherit Winterfell even if all of the Starks were dead despite Roose being Warden of the North. In fact, the Karstarks are distantly related so they would have more claim than Roose.

Its so confusing because I think GRRM writes it that no one could claim Winterfell except a Stark but in the real world, in the middle ages, a king or lord could just claim someone else’s property if they were a traitor. They did it in England all of the time.

Other side effect of them leaving out the Northern Lords in the show is that they haven’t shown that the true North will always rally to the Starks, even if its a little kid (Rickon) because the Starks are that loved.

  382. Greatjon of Slumber: Finally, someone says it well.

The Umbers, Manderley’s and Mormonts aren’t non-entities! *northern feathers are ruffled*

  383. AliKat: According to the book…

“According to the book…” means very little at this point. From an unsullied fan of the show’s perspective, the whole fArya wedding plot would probably be more confusing than entertaining.

  384. Delta1212,

Good new for you then! Mike Slovis is directing E1 and E2. There are already some trailer shots that one could pick out as being shot in the distinctive Slovis camerawork style.

  385. Wimsey: American Southerners try this tact all the time: 19th century abolitionists didn’t believe that Africans were equal to Europeans, therefore they were just as bad as the Southerners who enslaved Africans. It is nonsense.

Well, yes, it is nonsense, however I grew up in the south, and while I don’t live there anymore, I have family all over Virginia, Kentucky, Georgia, and Alabama. I have never heard anyone say anything of the sort. Perhaps there are some who make that argument, perhaps, but to say “southerners try this tact all the time???”

On the note of the trailer:

It’s taken me a bit to process what I saw, but I’ve decided my favorite moment in the trailer is Tyrion seeing Drogon. Yes, there are many moments which made me excited, curious, what have you, but seeing Tyrion see a real, live dragon for the first time is what is sticking with me.

  386. Wimsey,

Egalitarianism is a dream, the world isn’t slowly stepping toward it but back tracking.
Modern capitalism is nothing more than feudalism in disguise, Look at the growing disproportion in the classes, especially based on race. In 1776 America, the major land owning and merchant elite made up almost 10% and controlled less than 50%. The middle class lawyer, doctor farmer, tradesman and shop/tavern owner, etc. comprised another 1/4-1/3 of the population, the workforce and poor were at or below 60 percent. Today that 10% is less than 1%, the true middle class under 5%, the workforce and poor, nearer 90%, these numbers existed during the feudalism period of world history, and therefore we are going backward.
Furthermore the disproportionate percentage based on gender and race is widening when it comes to controlling that wealth. Sure women and minorities here in America have more opportunities when it comes to joining the 5% middle class, but their odds of becoming a 1% is basically non-existent.
They say in another generation the top one percent or less will control 2/3 of the wealth, that hasn’t been the norm since ancient times. Most of this is due to corporate capitalism, not the middle class entrepreneur, which is what the Founding Fathers desired. They despised the East India Company, which was the first global corporation and controlled much of the decision making in Parliament in the mid 18th century, and was not reigned in until 1784, after the fiasco of America. Therefore if we want out children and theirs to have the type of future our Founding Fathers wanted, Congress needs to reign in unbridled capitalism, otherwise two options will surface by the mid 21st century, either a neocon dystopia or a new revolution and constitutional convention which will replace our Republic with a Parliamentary Democracy.

  387. Cumsprite,

Not that I believe for a second you are an American Southerner but don’t you love it when a whole region is lumped together just so one can showcase something?

The only thing Wimsey’s comment showcases unfortunately is a tendency of cliche stereotyping! I say tendency because he didn’t say “all American Southerners”. He didn’t say “some” either though…

Anyway, Mr. Sprite, don’t get your panties in a twist. In my experience we are all guilty of this tendency at some point in life. Mistakes happen.

  388. Waxfoot: sounds great, really does. Each would work well as their own self-contained story.

Only i’d hope they were a little more ambitous than “think LOTR”!

    Crabber’s Son:
    TheTouchOfFrost,

I want to see a roberts rebellion movie trilogy.

Game of Thrones: The Tourney of Harrenhal
Opening with the battle against the Kingswood Brotherhood to introduce the Kingsguard (who will be a key part of the story) and Jaime (another key character to show Arys’s creeping madness) getting knighted. The first movie in the trilogy would focus on the tourney. It would show the relationship of the Stark family think of the Game of thrones pilot mixed with a Knights Tale. Would also show Arys’s growing paranoia with his own son and also explore Tywin’s strained relationship with the King as well as set up Rhaegar’s family. The movie would end with Lyanna being kidnapped, allegedly. The final scene would be Brandon Stark and Rickard Stark dying in kings landing and Robert and Ned deciding they are going to war.

Plus Stannis’s forces under siege at Storms End

    Game of Thrones:

This movie would focus on the sack of Kingslanding. Davos saving Stannis in Storm’s End. The Tower of Joy. Stannis barely missing catching the remaining Targs at Dragonstone. Plus of course the actual Kingslaying!
Think Return of the King with multiple epic endings Ned bringing home a bastard greeting his family, fade to black. Dany being born during a storm, fade to black. Robert sitting on his throne, fade to black. The white walkers waking up because of all the racket down south?!, fade to black. Also Jamie tracking down the remaining pyromancers to a backdrop of people whispering Kingslayer behind his back.

Added a few modifications if you don’t mind 😉 Would be made up if they actually made this happen!

  389. I grew up my entire 26 years of life in The American South and let me tell you that I cannot wait to finally move to a more progressive and contemporary part of the world.

  390. Several people have suggested Shireen being burned by Mel. No idea if it’s plausible story-wise, but could run into problems due to Kerry Ingram’s (Shireen’s) age. Child actors aren’t allowed to be present for filming of anything they are too young to watch themselves. I was surprised to find she’s nearly 16 as I think she looks younger, but she could only be on set for things rated up to 15, not 18. (I’m using UK film and dvd ratings here, they go minimum age 12, 15, 18.) I’m just guessing but find it hard to believe a GoT-style burning wouldn’t be 15 rated as an absolute minimum, probably more likely an 18, especially with a child rather than adult victim. If it is an 18 it would be very difficult, although not completely impossible, to film convincingly if she’s supposed to be in the thick of the action.

  391. Lion of Night:
Mike Slovis is directing E1 and E2. There are already some trailer shots that one could pick out as being shot in the distinctive Slovis camerawork style.

He won an emmy for his CSI “style”. Expect closeups of bloody stuff, details….blood burbling, blood dripping…then panoramic wide-lens stuff. Plus his BB stills and panoramas were incredible. Can’t wait.

  392. I’m still convinced Shireen will end up being Azor Ahai. That’s why Mel thinks it’s Stannis. I know, I know. Oh, Oh, oh… just because Daenerys hatched dragons doesn’t mean that Shireen won’t do the same somewhere down the line.

  393. Wimsey,

I’ve heard southerners make that argument. It’s an attempt at equivalence, and doesn’t work. I’ve also heard them talk about racism in the north. Since south has a history of slavery, then Jim Crow, no kind of equivalence works.

Having said that, I can’t admire Dany. What she does is not the same as freeing the slaves in the south, as the south and Slaver’s Bay are two very different cultures. There are no abolitionists in Slaver’s Bay. There are no neighboring cultures that don’t practice slavery. Ancient Greece or Rome would be better equivalents to Slaver’s Bay than the south. Realistically, it should take generations to change such a culture. One swift shove won’t do it.

Dany is using Meereen as a practice kingdom. She’s going to work out the kinks in her ruling style there, then move on to Westeros. Turns out, she has a lot of kinks to work out, but Martin has arranged things in such a way that the reader is unlikely to be horrified at the terrible result of her policies. That makes her seem like the spoiled child in the list of Martin’s characters.

Dany is the only character with the perfect cause. She kills tens of thousands, and destroys a city or two in the process, but Martin arranges things so that she gets a pass. She’s trying to end SLAVERY and those civilizations were so weird to start with. They’re mostly ill drawn yet so exotic, with people who have weird names and weird cuisines, all seen through the eyes of Westerosi who don’t get them. Seen through the eyes of the Westerosi, Slaver’s Bay is inhabited by mostly undifferentiated villains and victims, so if the victims die, Dany, whom they worshiped, freed them, so all is well. If slavers die, all is well, again. If slavers as young as 13 are killed, hell, they were slavers, and they’re so weird, and oh, look, Martin has added some grey to Dany’s character. It’s Orientalizing at its very worst, by both Martin and the show.

  394. Lulu’s Mum,

I’m not sure how accurate or not this is (just think of all the horror scenes throughout movies/shows that feature kids), but if they really wanted to film this, and the rules/standards you mentioned were in place, I imagine it wouldn’t be hard to do.

They can film her being tied up to the place where she’s going to be burned, and then for the actual burning just have a similar looking adult stunt double (flames obscuring the face) with actor’s screams dubbed on top of it. Easy.

  395. Wimsey: Daeny is pushing for that step.Expecting one generation to recognize all the inequities in their world is foolishness: instead, what you have are those willing to take everything for granted (the Lannisters, the Tyrells, the Baratheons), and those willing to reconsider some things (Daeny, Jon).

Daenerys does not reconsider feudalism, she, in common with all other lords in Westeros, takes it for granted. Not only that, she wants to ‘break the wheel’ (i. e. to destroy all mighty houses in Westeros) and establish an absolute monarchy (i. e. an autocracy).

  396. By “breaking the wheel”, I did not interpret Daenerys to mean she is going to wipe out the Lannisters, Baratheons, Starks and Tyrells. I took it to mean that she has no intention of fighting in their ongoing battles and being another ‘spoke on the wheel’. She doesn’t perceive them as enemies to kill, she perceives them as enemies who are inconsequential in the eye of her rising power.

  397. Nymeria Warrior Queen: while I don’t live there anymore, I have family all over Virginia, Kentucky, Georgia, and Alabama. I have never heard anyone say anything of the sort.

Sadly, it has become common lately. It’s actually been in the news a bit due to the attempts by some state governments to revise history text books. This is one of the points that some of them want emphasized.

I live in Virginia currently, and it has come up here: the people downstate do not like the “official” version of history, which is “unAmerican.” (I come from “Old Yankee” blood, myself: I happily tell Southerners that I never considered them to be American in the first place!)

Whether you have encountered it before is all quite moot: singling out one character for not seeing dozens of generations beyond what any of the other characters see when she is one of the only ones seeing any generations beyond what most characters see is ludicrous. What I want to know is, who are these lead characters advocating for any improvements in the rights of the common man? Judge the characters by where they stand relative to the others: after all a tall hobbit might only be 4′ tall, but he is still a tall hobbit.

  398. Almasy,
They are very strict on this kind of thing here in the UK and I’m pretty sure the law applies to any filming in Northern Ireland. (NI is part of the UK but can opt out of some laws, such as declining for religious reasons to provide the same abortion services that are legal elsewhere. I don’t think they can opt out of something like this which is designed to protect people though.) Due to clever editing it looks like kids are there when they often aren’t. If you watch carefully you’ll see they’re not in the same shot as something horrible and it’s often so well done you’d never notice it. Might just be for a split second but they aren’t there at the crucial moment the yukkiness is happening. Not just GoT but adult themed stuff in general.

Any kind of burning scene is likely to involve CGI, stunt people and loads of other effects, as apparently setting actors on fire for real isn’t popular for some reason ;O) It might be whoever decides these things thinks the mere idea of being burned alive is too horrible for a kid to be present, although that’s probably for ones a bit younger than her. I thought she was about 12 so it was almost certainly a non-starter of an idea until I looked it up, but being 15 could well swing it? Apparently the kid’s welfare overrides everything else, so if they were likely to find it upsetting it wouldn’t be attempted, but it might be ok if the actor is fairly young but mature and it won’t phase them. It depends on what exactly what they want to show I guess.

  399. No real indicators of what Sam is up to, one of the last remaining question marks.

Given the massive plot-condensation going on, I think Oldtown is becoming increasingly unlikely, in any form.
  400. Galli:
By “breaking the wheel”, I did not interpret Daenerys to mean she is going to wipe out the Lannisters, Baratheons, Starks and Tyrells.I took it to mean that she has no intention of fighting in their ongoing battles and being another ‘spoke on the wheel’.She doesn’t perceive them as enemies to kill, she perceives them as enemies who are inconsequential in the eye of her rising power.

Then she would say she’s going to re-invent the wheel 😉

  401. Wimsey,

Hmmmm. I hadn’t heard anything recently about a controversy with Virginia history textbooks. Maybe I missed it. The last textbook controversies I’ve come across were in Oklahoma and Texas. Two states whose Southern credentials many question.

  402. Quick question:
Kevan and Lancel both appeared in the leaked Ep. 1 script summary (which has already been proved to be accurate in regards to seemingly unforeseeable details like the snake-in-a-box), but I’m slightly worried that we haven’t seen them lurking around the background of a shot in any of these trailers or production stills. You would at least think that we might see Lancel in any of the shots depicting other rank-and-file sparrows, but he doesn’t seem to be there. Anyone have any thoughts on what the situation with these long-lost Lannisters might be?

    Quick reply:
    Wimsey,
I, too, thought there was something cynical or subversive about the use of “Heroes.” It started out feeling like a genuine enough expression of upcoming heroic moments by our favorite characters, but towards the end of the trailer the song began to slow, and warp, until the singer sounded like a dying man (or the smooth soul stylings of Barry Wight, haha!) and the images on the screen revealed the aftermath of the noble intentions and the big speeches and the heroics: more strife and death and destruction, more manipulation and confusion and heartache. Oh, and a shit-ton of crows picking at mutilated bodies.
    (“We can feed the crows!/
    Just after we’re flayed!/
And dragons, dragons will tear us apart!/ …”
… Haha, you get the idea. But that’s all just my take on it, you’re definitely right that there is some pretty epic and straight-heroic stuff on the horizon.)

  403. Wimsey,

    Cumsprite,

You might want to check out a book called “A Renegade History of the United States”, by Thaddeus Russell. His theories on slavery and race relations are interesting to read, even if you don’t agree with them.

    Galli:

By “breaking the wheel”, I did not interpret Daenerys to mean she is going to wipe out the Lannisters, Baratheons, Starks and Tyrells. Dany still doesn’t get it – the entire system is already broken, and the Targaryens are part of the problem. It’s not going to work because she is special and she does it. It’s the literal definition of insanity.

  404. I haven’t scrolled through too much, so maybe this has been suggested, but I saw a comment mentioning the lack of Sam so far. Does anyone else think that Sam may take Davos’ role from the books?

  405. Wimsey,

I don’t think my having not encountered it before is moot. Having not encountered it contradicts your assertion it is common. Were it truly common, I would have encountered it, at some point. I’m not saying there aren’t people who may think that way, there are many people in that part of the country who think in a way I’ll diplomatically call archaic, but for every person there who may think that way, there is someone else there to counter balance it.

    Cumsprite,

Not that I’m up to date on all controversies about school curricula throughout the country, but the one I recall reading about most recently is where they’re trying to remove evolution from the textbooks in Oklahoma.

Ok, now that I’ve made an entire post that’s way, way, way off-topic (sorry), I’ll leave this debate behind. I don’t think this is the place for it, and I won’t perpetuate it any further.

  406. Damn did I cringe at that “badass” speech, and all the other similar ones she’s had during the series. I sincerely hope that it’s meant to showcase Daenerys having some of the Targaryen madness, but I fear that it’s actually meant to be taken at face value.

Also, the scenery chewing and ham is far too much.

  407. Flora Linden,

Actually the feudal system does work quite well if the Monarch is overwhelmingly powerful, which she has all the capacity to be if the dragons could ever be properly tamed. But the monarch must also be of a very diplomatic nature, to temper all her subjects and bend them to her will. One can not rule only with either the iron gauntlet or the silken glove, one needs both.

But she is naive, un-diplomatic and prone to rash decisions and clearly has no small dose of the Targaryen taint of madness. She would not last long on the throne before someone did her in, and the wheel would just spin on.

  408. Has anyone figured out the mystery of the extra Kingsguards?

In this shot of the trailer, Tommen is backed by no less than five White Cloaks… but how is that possible? The Kinsgsguard at Tommen’s side, as you can see in this picture, is neither Jaime nor Meryn Trant, the only Kingsguards with a permanent actor (in fact I’m pretty sure he’s Paddy Wallace, who was cast as “Lead Kingsguard”.) Jaime and Meryn wouldn’t be at the back, either, due to their prominence in the show. Yet currently in the show there are only 6 kingsguard, with one spot open (as Tywin threatened Olenna with in Season 3.) There are only 4 “extra” kingsguards, and one of them went away with Myrcella (whether they want to call him Arys Oakheart or not is immaterial; we saw him went away with Myrcella to Dorne.) Yet, in this scene, there are five. There are two too many. In previous years, the show has been consistent about this, if you care to notice. There are never too many Kingsguards… but unless I’m missing something, there are now. Are they really bothering to add a couple of people into the Kingsguard in the show? Maybe only this “Lead Kingsguard”, and Myrcella’s Kingsguard will be coming back to the capital now that Jaime is there?

Maybe they have to fill the White Cloak quota so that Cersei has the same issue she did in AFFC, where she had to induce her champion FrankenMountain into the order of the Kingsguards if he was to fight for her, but there wasn’t any spot available until one of them died? Will it be Meryn, who’s definitely dying in Braavos? Or maybe also one of the extra Kingsguards, in the city itself?

This is a silly thing, I know. But they’ve been consistent until now. I don’t see why they wouldn’t keep track of their Kingsguards now.

  409. Luka Nieto,

They could make the argument (either on-screen or off) that the Kingsguard that went with Myrcella has returned to King’s Landing (banished by Martells or recalled by Cersei once Jaime sent on his mission to ensure Tommen had a fortified guard). I can almost guarantee that we won’t find a KG with Myrcella once Jaime meets her in Dorne (as that would interfere with his “rescuing her” plot) so they may have just decided to say that the rest are all in King’s Landing now.

Knowing how the show operates, I doubt this would ever be acknowledged on-screen but if someone were to ask Cogman, he’d give a similar explanation.

  410. King Tommen,

Or perhaps he was just escorting her there and not staying with her? One of my disappointments with the series is that Kingsguard stories wasn’t fleshed out more but nay mind.

  411. Flora Linden:
Dany still doesn’t get it – the entire system is already broken, and the Targaryens are part of the problem. It’s not going to work because she is special and she does it.

Can’t disagree there…but hopefully she will surround herself with trusted advisors who do understand the political machinations and motivations of Westeros, which she doesn’t have a clue about…yet. Her “wheel” monologue was like Westeros Political Theory 101. I wonder if she spoke with Tyrion at all before saying it….maybe Selmy? It’s not just learning how to rule but who you will rule. Can you conquer without destroying? The dragons should be used as enforcers not as nuclear bombs, imho. I doubt she wants to rule over the ashes…that’s LF’s aspiration.

Oh well, I’m curious. I can’t wait to see if she bleeds if/when she sits upon the iron throne. That’s the true test!

  412. Big Mac,

Yeap. That’s not Sam. He hasn’t been seen at Hardhome at all. However, he was present in the concept art for the Hardhome set featured in “A Day in the Life.” May have been a placeholder, but still, worth mentioning.

  413. Hodor’s Bastard,

I was theorising/hoping LF’s big plan was to change the whole system of rule to something more democratic or that at least adds more power to the common man ( would have been interesting to see him as an Oliver Cromwell type figure). Looks like that may be going out the window then if his long game basically involves messing about with Sansa.

  414. Book purists on westeros.org wonder why would LF go to the North.

    Interesting.

Did they even read the books ??

Because if they did they would realize that he wants the North in books, as well. We learned at the end of AFFC.

    That is his main goal.

It’s very irritating to see the arrogance mixed with ignorance.

  415. mau,

“Always keep your foes confused. If they are never certain who you are or what you want, they cannot know what you are like to do next. Sometimes the best way to baffle them is to make moves that have no purpose, or even seem to work against you. Remember that, Sansa, when you come to play the game” – Petyr Baelish

Got to say, it’s working as I have no earthly idea why he’d let Sansa put herself in harm’s way in Winterfell when he’s still not fully secured the Vale.

  416. Macharius,

Your description of good monarch makes me think of Queen Elizabeth I. Oddly enough, it fits Sansa better than Dany. Dany is more like Cleopatra – a ruler whose ancestors were foreigners and created a dynasty marked by infighting and political incest (close family members married constantly). Plus Cleopatra presented herself as a queen who ruled by divine right, a goddess on earth.

    Hodor’s Bastard,

Hopefully Dany’s advisors will give her honest advice, not just tell her what she wants to hear or things that will advance their own agendas and ambitions. Keeping her ignorant of what really is going on.

I just hope Dany will realize on her own the truth about her family’s role in Westeros and not see her situation through rose-colored glasses. I like her, and it would be sad if she lost herself to regain something that may not be worth the price.

  417. TheTouchOfFrost:
    mau,

Got to say, it’s working as I have no earthly idea why he’d let Sansa put herself in harm’s way in Winterfell when he’s still not fully secured the Vale.

But he will be in one or two episodes of S5. We don’t need 3 seasons of that…

I believe that this is the same case as with Jamie in S3 and 4.

In the books he came to KL after purple wedding, but in the show he came before.

In the books Sansa and LF will come to WF after Battle of Ice, but in the show they will come before.

  418. Flora Linden,

    I just wonder

who Dany will be once she returns from the desert, riding her big boy and khalsar in tow (assuming she returns)! Will she be a legacy Targ, a best-of Targ, a worst-of Targ, a progressive Targ, or a female khal?
  419. mau,

As long as they don’t mess things up. As long as she’s not going up there as Sansa or fArya it could work. Do worry when they tamper with the stronger storylines from the books. Fingers crossed.

  420. TheTouchOfFrost,

We will see. I hope for the best.

It has the potential for the most intriguing scenes of the show.

I don’t belive they are changing that for no reason.

Sansa and LF are headed to the North in books as well. I think they are just playing with chronology.

  421. TheTouchOfFrost,

Are you saying LF is misunderstood, a tragic figure? I have trouble accepting any idea that assumes LF could create a system that advocates and fortifies solid political and economic relationships. What did he really do as Master of Coin, other than get Westeros further in debt to the IBoB and further the ideals of chaos?

I just hope Sansa is learning to handle and tolerate monstrous manipulations enough to understand when LF’s machinations have gone too far. I’ll never trust LF. I hope he doesn’t teach Sansa to cook pies. 🙂

Maybe one day Sansa (or Arya or LS) will realize the truth regarding LF and do to him what the Royalists did to Cromwell’s corpse!

  422. mau,

    I’m sure there’s a reason. It’s just whether it’s a good one or not!

    Hodor’s Bastard,

I think LF’s early life had a major effect on him with him being unable to marry Cat and Lyssa and his child being aborted because of his social standing ie him not being of noble birth. The getting the crown in debt thing could all be part of his bringing the system down. Without their wealth then what do the noble families really have to back up their position?
I don’t think Sansa is going to become the political genius/manipulater everyone seems to think/want her to be. She may be a factor in LF’s demise but I hope not as I think his story could play out on a much grander scheme than just being more Stark story fodder.
Not sure what the truth about LF is? Out of all the characters in the series, he’s the one who has played his cards closest to his chest. Varys has revealed his end game yet we still don’t really know what LF wants. Like Cromwell, he’s a controversial figure in that one person’s monster is anotehr’s hero. Personally, I think Cromwell did remarkable things for the style of English government and brought power to the people. The way he went about it wasn’t pretty though. I sense LF could be a similar figure unless he just wants to watch the world burn or, the lamest option, just get in Sansa’s pants which I think would be a waste of such a well set up character.

  423. Throner,

I am not concerned. If you recall, the marketing in season 3 was very careful to never show Davos’s face so as not to make us aware he was still alive. Whatever is happening with Sam is something that D&D want kept under wraps. That’s a good bet why we haven’t seen his face.

  424. Here’s who dies this season.

Tommen. Accused of being a bastard, killed by the Sparrow’s henchmen (we see the beginning of this scene in the trailer).

Stannis and Roose. Killed in the Battle of Wintefell, making way for a North ruled by Sansa Stark and Ramsay Snow.

Bronn. Likely to catch it in Dorne.

Three surprising deaths for casuals and book fans alike.

  425. Many of you assume that Dany still wants to achieve a long-lasting Targaryen rule in Westeros, as opposed to achieving a broader objective (that may outlast her and her family’s reign) of political reform.

Think of her as a Napoleon at this point. Napoleon made some allies, but mostly, he rolled over much of monarchical Europe. And as he did so, he harshly imposed systems of governance built on republican ideals. He ultimately overstretched himself, this led to his downfall, and a good chunk of his reforms were eventually overturned. However, the republican concepts and legal regimes that he imposed had a deeply lasting impact on European societies, and ultimately (eventually) led to the spread of republican governance across the continent, and the slow death of the monarchical system in Europe.

So yeah, Napoleon didn’t lay the groundwork for his own survival. But in the annals of history, he set Europe on a course that would end monarchies and enshrine republics. In other words, he broke the wheel.

That’s likely to be Dany’s legacy. Whether she or her regime survives in Westeros is of little importance if her revolutionary zeal is successful at shattering the monarchies of Westeros.

So for all you armchair strategists that think you’d do things far more brilliantly than this “idiot” girl, take a look her equivalents in history.

  426. ArgonathofBraavos,

The Tommen scene has already been leaked and it happens early in season where Tommen is blocked from entering the sept and deescalates the situation so there is no bloodshed, showing his leadership skills.

  427. Crabber’s Son,

I hope so! I really like the actor. Just have a feeling either a Lannister or a Baratheon is going to die this season.

I suppose it’s also possible that Stannis will smash Roose and Ramsay, and marry Sansa. That’s my hope, at least.

  428. Hodor’s Bastard,

I dont blame LF for ned’s death at all. I almost feel like I wouldve done the same thing in LF’s position. Ned was making terrible decisions and Varys couldve saved him too so if anything Varys is equally as guilty as LF. If LF wanted to change the political system and reduce the power of the nobility he could not afford to have Stannis on the throne. Having Ned take the throne for himself, however, would lead to a conflict with Stannis and Renly thus causing chaos. I think Sansa betrayed her father also so I dont see her turning on LF and after learning from him I think she would overlook the betrayal as part of the game. besides he did pretty much save her multiple times. Arya is another story but I would not be surprised if Varys and Littlefinger both survive the entire series. One of the last scenes could be the two of them on another kings council or at the center of a new system. If Joffrey didnt execute Ned the North may have completely stayed neutral and safe. So unless LF was actually the one who convinced Joffrey to execute Ned I dont hold a huge grudge against him.

  429. House Ray:
What if Ramsay tells Jon in the pink letter that he has his sister Sansa? Perhaps she gets found out in her scheming.

    Wow I think you’re right!

  430. Crabber’s Son,

Another LF sympathizer? 🙂 I agree that Ned was his own worst enemy…worst game-player ever since he actually trusted people. Sansa naively betrayed her family out of blind aspirations of being queen someday…but we’ll forgive her, especially since she may yet be in a position to challenge the monstrosities surrounding her.

LF is a gameplayer indeed and it will take quite a bit to unravel him, but I would like to read/see that unraveling, especially if it is initiated by a Stark after one of his manipulations goes too far. Although, I greatly respect how you and others are keenly aware of LF’s gamechanging abilities and continuously have me interested in his exploits. LF in KL and subsequent activity in S5 will be most fun! Thx!

  431. ArgonathofBraavos,

Nice ideal theory, Arg. I’ll remember it, like TouchofFrost and CrabbersSon’s ideal thoughts on ashman LF. Would you like Three Cups of Tea with that? 🙂 It’s definitely not a Ragnarok vision or a vision that most current Westeros monarchies would tolerate, but damn if it didn’t scream “A woman’s got to have a code!” (A Napoleonic Code, that is!)

She may set things in motion indeed for democratic progress in Westeros (someone has to in every history) but is that a possible GRRM future that we can bet on? Napoleon came from a bit more modest lineage than Dany. Like her obnoxious, egomaniacal, slam&dragon-dancing relatives, she may have a good idea or two with decent advisors (who will be her BR?) but I will bet that her family ghosts and blood will lead her astray,

especially as she comes back from the desert.

Your ideas are credible, though……perhaps between Jon and Dany’s more mature influence in years to come, something will take root and initiate change, if they survive the maestrom’s ahead!

  432. I can’t read 600-plus comments, so apologies if this had been discussed above. Are we 100% certain Myranda is still alive in that scene they show? She changes her expression just a tiny bit, but otherwise, she looks like a corpse. Ramsay’s probably flaying her.

  433. Hodor’s Bastard,

The thing I love about LF is that in any other story he would be the hero. A young lad who comes from nothing has a once in a lifetime chance to be raised with a noble family. There on his journey of self discovery he falls in love but he must prove himself to win the affection of the the woman of his dreams. So he challenges her arrogant self centered prince charming and beats him winning her heart……oh wait HE LOSES and gets maimed, all his dreams and innocence get shattered so he sets out to change the system that has kept people like him down. He isnt just going to stop the wheel he is gong to break the wheel, but without announcing it to the world. 😀

  434. Winnie:
    Ali Kat,

Precisely.Which means Santa/Theron interaction which could be very VERY good indeed.

That sounds awesome! I can’t wait for the Christmas special.

  435. Hodor’s Bastard,

Oh, I think the confines of GRRM’s story are in some ways beside the point. The question is: will she break the wheel, and at least open up the possibility of a more egalitarian society? If she is able to smash the old order, and introduce ideas of human dignity into the world, then they are not likely to ever be forgotten, even if a reactionary backlash occurs in the short term (as it did in Astapor and Yunkai). Once the populace tastes freedom, they won’t easily give it back.

If the White Walkers show up and destroy everyone, on the other hand, it’s all moot. But even that scenario doesn’t negate the fact that Dany is essentially a revolutionary hero. The only one in this story.

    Girl’s gotta have a code!

  436. After analyzing Stannis’ war table it looks like he’s going to try to divide the Bolton forces at the Dreadfort from the Bolton forces at Winterfell.
  437. FreyPie,

I personally don’t think that he Is flaying her in that scene, but I can see Ramsay kissing or raping someone as he flays them.

  438. Hodor’s Bastard,

    I’m not sure if Dany

goes back to the Dothraki Sea in the TV show. The scene from the new trailer seems like Drogon is saying goodbye to Dany, sort of declaring his independence from her. Drogon might have saved Dany from the Pit and brought her to safety at the Pyramid, then farewell. I’m probably wrong, but it felt that way to me watching it.

Maybe in the show Dany realizes she cannot rely on her dragons – they’re just dangerous animals and they’re gone – to enforce power and conquer. No more Targaryen excuses. Now she’s no different from any other of the warlords claiming the throne. So, what kind of leader will she be?

  439. For what it’s worth, the GoT Exhibition in Stockholm is selling T-shirts with the words “Winterfell” and “The North Remembers.” Not proof of anything, obviously, but at least it doesn’t seem like anyone’s trying to make viewers forget about that aspect. In fact, apart from the sigil T-shirts, there was pretty much just that one (in two different colors), one with the Night’s Watch oath, and one saying Valar Morghulis. Oh yeah, and the Hodor one.

  440. What I anticipate in Season 5 is more of Westeros hearing about this mythical queen in the East with dragons. I’m sure it will mean little to the Boltons, but surely it must mean something to Melisandre when she gets word of it? How will she then reconcile Daenerys to her own belief that Stannis is the promised one?

  441. Flora Linden,

I must admit that, as awesome as that last trailer shot was, I was indeed confused by it (in a good way):

    1) Did Drogon return from his vacation in Valyria early and checkin in with mom? Did she reach out to him and he played hard to get?

    2) Was this a post-Daznak’s scene where Drogon has saved an injured Dany and has dropped her off to safety before diving back into the chaos? Go Big D! Maybe he has gone to strategize with R&V? 🙂

    3) Have they already bonded and was Dany trying to mind-meld with Drogon post-Daznak’s, give him a message, then he flies off to terrorize the other Slavers Bay armies as they approach? Has the battle begun? But she needs to ride him. Dragons don’t do missions without their riders.

    4) It does beg us to reconsider the images that Greenjones relinked above. Is that simply Drogon’s desert outpost, a base for his terrorizing sorties?

It might indeed be that “conservation of story” is taking place again in Slavers Bay and Dany doesn’t have her desert detour. Dany’s outfit consistency seems to indicate that it is post-Daznak’s and she is remaining in Meereen for the looming battle (if it isn’t pre-maturely quenched by Big D).

  442. Hodor’s Bastard,

She seems to wear white for a lot of Season 5. White is her new Blue. I agree with Greenjones; the last shot in the trailer is not post-Daznak. There’s the dragon-roasted horse remains he mentioned, and that Daenerys seems to spot Drogon for the first time in that shot; it doesn’t look like the dragon has just taken her on a ride.

My pet theory? Drogon simply visits her Mother. This will be during Dany’s internal struggle whether to be a Mother of Dragons or a Mysha to her people. War or Peace. By this time, she will have chosen peace, and Drogon will not recognize or respect her as her Mother (which is what I think we see quite clearly in the trailer.)

  443. Luka Nieto,

Yeah, what a pleasant break in her arc this season that would be! Most likely that is what we are seeing. I’m still thinking he went to visit relatives in Valyria and took the long way home via the Sorrows.

  444. Luka Nieto,

Oh? When do you think Tyrion is gazing to the sky, jaw-agape? Dragon’s action speak louder than words! 🙂

Is Tyrion staring wide-eyed at the disturbing activity on the Sorrows’ bridge rather than a Big D flyover?…as you say, it could have been a trailer trick.
  445. Hodor’s Bastard,

I agree, I was just joking that we’ll never know of Drogon’s whole travels because he’s not a very talkative fellow.

As for Tyrion spotting Dorgon, I don’t think it’s a trailer trick either. How am I so sure? In Tyrion’s shot, he was on a small boat. Thanks to leaked filming pictures and a ‘Making Game of Thrones’ blog post, we know the sails of Tyrion’s boat are orange. The shot with Drogon, just after the shot with Tyrion, has an orange sail in the left corner (the camera is Tyrion’s point of view.) I’m pretty sure they are indeed two continuous shots, not a trailer trick.

  446. Hodor’s Bastard,

The dress is different. In the pyramid she is wearing a dress with an embroidery looking like dragon scales. In the Daznak’s Pit she is wearing a silk dress, without scales.

  447. Maryanna,

    Yeah, that too.

The dresses are really similar though, so it’s an honest mistake. For some reason, Dany’s primary color is not white.

  448. Maryanna,

So, as others point out above, it must be a mid-season check-in by the formative son, with his mother simply wanting a hug….but Big D is not having any of that. He’s off to sow some oats!

Love the attention to detail though by all! All I saw was a white and gold dress.

  449. I don’t know about you guys, but I find it thrilling (& surprising) to think that this season could very well be the best season yet!

  450. Maria:

Well the Targaryens conquered Westeros basically the same way. They changed everything and killed thousands with dragon fire to gain it but fans admire them.

    Lulu’s Mum:

I don’t think GOT adheres to this LOL Isaac & Art (Bran/Rickon) watched an execution and Sophie(as Sansa) watched one as well plus she was almost raped when she was younger. Arya’s face was turned away when Ned was executed but she saw torture at Harranhal when Maisie was still younger than 16.

  451. zambi76:
Well, well. Looks like Loras is really taking over some of Marg’s part in season 5.

He even seems to get a mini trail by faith already.

My baby is really pissed off again. Either somebody said something mean about Renly or made a “yo sista”-joke.

Olenna, Marg and Cersei sitting in the background like dead chicken is a bit curious.Hey, the kitten king is there too.

Oh, and Brienne gets the WINTER IS HERE!11!! scene (snow in the Riverlands). Nice.

The guy sitting in the chair that he lunges at is the guy from the brothel that he hooked up with in S3 (that told Petyr about their plans to marry Sansa to Loras)

  452. With all the talk about Sansa converging on Winterfell, I’m surprised no one has mentioned that Littlefinger will also be present. You can see their backs at the head of the Vale host entering Winterfell at 0:43.

  453. tyjon They say in another generation the top one percent or less will control 2/3 of the wealth, that hasn’t been the norm since ancient times. Most of this is due to corporate capitalism, not the middle class entrepreneur, which is what the Founding Fathers desired.
A part of corporate capitalism is HBO, not to mention Apple that had been announced as HBO Now’s exclusive partner. Obviously in unbridled capitalism corporations provide entertainment for the masses. While the masses have fun (watching GoT), corporations (and their puppet politicians) rule countries ‘n make money.

tyjon Therefore if we want out children and theirs to have the type of future our Founding Fathers wanted, Congress needs to reign in unbridled capitalism, otherwise two options will surface by the mid 21st century, either a neocon dystopia or a new revolution and constitutional convention which will replace our Republic with a Parliamentary Democracy.
If you want your children and theirs to have the type of future US Founding Fathers wanted, then maybe you should prevent them to watch corporations’ entertainments. Of course, there’s always THE other (i. e. Thomas Jefferson’s) option – the tree of liberty must be refreshed from time to time with the blood of tyrants. Spare dragons, put them in a zoo.

  454. Dutch maester,

Indeed! We’ve come a long way from the days when Martin was speculating that Game of Thrones might take 2-3 seasons to work through AFFC and ADWD and Benioff and Weiss were freely acknowledging in interviews that “Season 5 gives us nightmares”. Judging by everything that we’ve seen so far, they and the rest of their immensely talented cast and crew have managed to craft an incredibly exciting, action-packed, game-changing season. I legitimately believe that it’s going to be the best one to date. That’s a position that I never could have imagined myself taking even a year ago.

I’ll admit it – I was a bit worried. I was staring down at the the immensely rich yet incredibly unruly source material they were going to be working with and thinking “How in the Seven Hells are they going to wrangle this?” But they’ve done it. Despite the fears that some people held (and still hold), I don’t think they just herded all of those scattered crows and roaming dragons into a cage and hacked off any wings that happened to poke through the bars. Instead, they stared down the wild, snarling ball of beasts that Martin left them with and they tamed it, reshaping the vessel to harness all of that natural strength and give it a new focus. The process might have been a bit harsh for some, and what emerged may be a bit less grandiose. Ultimately, however, it’s going to be leaner, sharper, and more disciplined, while remaining every bit as fierce. All in all, Season 5 looks to be a truly powerful creature, and a promising weapon for the wars to come.

Sorry, I went a little overboard on my colorful metaphor there. I’m excited, in case you couldn’t tell. 😉

  455. Vallug Bowbeast,

I noticed that too, but it’s speculative, since we only see their backs. Baelish actually separates from Alayne in the books for a time, too. We’ll see.

Poor Sophie–she’s allergic to horses. I suspect Season 5 was a bit rough for her on that basis alone…

  456. I was just reading through the comments section on one of the Youtube videos of this trailer.
Good god, that was a horrible experience…

Not sure why I expected anything else, of course…

  457. Big Mac,

I hope you took a shower, deloused, and fumigated yourself before returning here. Correct protocol is to quarantine yourself for three days once you visit YouTube or IMDB comment sections.

Westeros and reddit adventurers are fine, just beware of neurotic, obsessive tendencies as a ramification/reminder of your visit.

WiC travelers are also clean, since probability of stumbling upon cognitive, conscious life forms while there is rare.

NotaBlog visitors have scruffy knees and have shifty eyes. Take a shower with excessive soap after visiting there as well.

  458. Hodor’s Bastard:
    Luka Nieto,

Oh? When do you think Tyrion is gazing to the sky, jaw-agape? Dragon’s action speak louder than words!

Tyrion overhears Drogon flying overhead in ADWD. I guess they wanted him to actually see the beast in the show.

  459. Jared,

Exactly what I am thinking, but with the dedication to actually write it down :P. Kudos to you. And, as you say, to D&D for pulling this of.

  460. Maester of Ceremonies,

Having seen a relative have an allergic reaction to a horse once, I can definitely affirm that it is not a pretty sight!

I’m pretty sure that it’s them, as both the figures have dark hair and are wearing dark cloaks that look like the same ones that S&L were shown wearing in the first trailer and in the production stills.

  461. Valaquen,

Oh, that could have been anything flying around in the fog along the Rhoyne. Plus it was really, really far away from Meereen…but not impossible for a Big D excursion, I guess! I actually thought GRRM opened the door slightly with that passage for theories about “other things flying around Essos”…including missing dragons, harpies, gryphons, feathery turtles, etc.

But, yes, I will be happy if they decidedly show that Big D flies a long way from Meereen and gives Tyrion a tease. 🙂

  462. Jared,

To put it bluntly: they cut out all the crap that ultimately wasn’t leading anywhere. When you do that, there’s actually not that much left of AFFC and ADWD.

*insert Tyrion whining and Dany doing piss all for 1.000 pages here*

  463. Hodor’s Bastard:

WiC travelers are also clean, since probability of stumbling upon cognitive, conscious life forms while there is rare.

That just made me burst laughing….thank you!

  464. I must say I am worried they have sanitised the Dany/Drogon pit to book end story, the whipping Drogon into submission, Dany sick, shitting, scruffy and starving would be a welcome change from the groomed look of the last couple of series.
