  1. I thought the band actually was bad, because they were mercenaries or at least soldiers disguised as musicians.

About the vengeance for the breaking of guest right: one of GRRM’s points with these books is that bad people are not always punished, there is no such thing as justice guaranteed by fate, let alone a ‘god’.

  2. I think there will be a kind of justice just not a very satisfying one. It will be like Theon getting tortured or.. I can’t think of any other event that has been shown in the show. Basically what I’m saying is i don’t expect the Frey’s to live happily ever after.

By the way i love it when you guys make Harry Potter references. Makes me nostalgic. I bet for many people who grew up participating in HP fandoms GoT is sort of the natural next step to a larger grittier story. Makes me wonder where this fandom will go once the show ends.

Gods don’t punish people, but GRRM shows that breaking all accepted moral rules openly is damaging and while it may give short-term success, ultimately leads to a downfall: the Freys may have been rewarded in short-term, but they’re not doing very well at the moment in terms of family members’ survival, to put it that way. When you do things like openly break guest right to commit a massacre (or, say, kill envoys etc.), your reputation suffers, nobody trusts you anymore, which irreparably damages the prospects of alliances, negotiations, agreements in the future; not to mention the hatred and contempt that most of the realm now feels for the Freys. Maintaining good name, reputation, trust and popularity is an important thing even in chaotic quasi-medieval conditions. And one of the consequences of the RW is that the foundations of the system have been shaken: things like guest right will not be taken for granted anymore, and the enemies of Freys, Lannisters, Boltons etc. can feel entitled to use just as ruthless tactics against them.
