Game of Thrones Super Summer Giveaway

This has been a long year, with a lot of strange things happening in the world. Not a lot of fun, for obvious reasons, and unfortunately no Con of Thrones this summer. As it happens, the con is when we usually unload a good amount of the Game of Thrones merch that comes our way, as trivia prizes and rewards for “Find Sue in the dining area and win a mug!”-type games. Reorganizing for my recent move reminded me I needed to find something to do with some of this goodness, so as promised, here it is, your super summer Game of Thrones worldwide giveaway! It won’t make up for the murder hornets but hopefully it will put a smile on your face.

We have FIVE prize packages, loaded with fun. Leave a comment to enter and you will be entered to win all, with winners chosen randomly. (Complete rules listed below the prizes, with additional ways to enter!)

Prize #1: Game of Thrones Collector’s Chess Set

Entries are accepted for fourteen days, closing the giveaway for entries on Saturday, August 8th, 2020 at 5PM ET. The winners will be randomly selected from the entries, and announced shortly thereafter.

    • I checked out the chess set on the HBO Store website. From these two images, the detail on the chess pieces looks extraordinary. I am tempted to go ahead and plunk down the $99 to buy the chess set.*

    * ⚠️ [Biased Fanboy Pseudo-Whinge Alert] My only reservations are that:

    • How did Giants end up on Team Zombie?
    • Horses as WW “Knights”? I suppose there weren’t many options, though mounting loincloth wearing stringy-haired surfer dude WWs atop decomposing horses might’ve added some in-universe realism.
    • Viserion as WW Queen? I suppose… However, in light of the S6e5 reveal of the WWs’ origin, perhaps a better candidate would’ve been one of the Children of the Forest, e.g., Leaf.
    • Better yet: a blue-eyed, scratched-up undead Karsi as Queen of the Ice Zombies. [Too soon?]

    • I’m okay with Jon Snow as King of Team Westeros. However, for the many fervent fans out there, a likeness of The One True King ought to be offered as an option for an extra $9.99. Or King Bran for a price to be determined.
    • I don’t know about dragons (Rhaegal and Drogon) as rooks? Actual castles, e.g., Winterfell, might’ve been nice. Or, since Team WW’s rooks are two Giants, maybe two corresponding characters such as Tormund (a rook instead of a bishop; someone like Melisandre could take his place as bishop); Sandor “I’m a big f*cker and I’m hard to kill” Clegane; Ser Davos; Ser Jorah; or even Lord Tywin?
    • Daenerys as “Queen” of Team Westeros? Yeah, I guess, though she was a stranger to Westeros, and her reign as (Mad) Queen of the Seven Kingdoms didn’t last very long. And Sansa partisans might feel that the Queen in the North should stand beside her predecessor, King Jon.
    • Personally, I do not know if I can justify buying a chess set in which the Queen of Team Westeros is anyone other than Arya. 👸🏻 That Arya is not among any of the sixteen pieces is hard to fathom. (Twelve men including Unsullied + two women + two genderless dragons…and no room for Arya?)
    • Final bit of whining: Dragons are overrepresented – on both sides. Not a single direwolf? If they couldn’t squeeze in Ghost and Nymeria, I would’ve preferred an eight-pup wolfpack instead of eight Unsullied pawns.

    Oh well. As someone once said, you go with the army you have, not the one you want. Or something like that.

    Argghhh! My long reply at 7:42 pm to Wolfish and Pigeon about the chess set is stuck in moderation (probably because I embedded links to the HBO Store’s images of the chess set’s pieces.) No big deal. My comment contained my frivolous observations about the choices of characters for the chess pieces.

    What I had meant to add was that if I happen to win the chess set, I’ll buy a second one and re-gift one to each of you. (Shallow altruism, I know, since the chances that I actually win are somewhere between remote and infinitesimal.)

    I don’t have access to the official hbo shop because I’m European, so I never saw many of these beautiful prizes.

  76. I doubt I’ll win anything and maybe it’s fair I don’t as I won a statue here of the boy king we all hated some years ago. It’s hard to judge quality by looking online but the chess sets look to be well crafted.

  79. If I’m a winner, I hope I get #1, 3, or 4. Dany!, Rhaegal, Ghost, chess…those’d be cool to get. It’s the Stark sisters that turn me off the others. >.>; Arya, whom I adored for seven seasons, and then…I just can’t with her anymore…and never would I ever bend the knee to that rat sister of hers (with apologies to rats everywhere, whom I actually love!)

  90. What a great competition. Rhaegal in particular is very cute. I think if I won the chess set I’d definitely be interested in playing again. When I was a kid I was in a lunchtime chess club for a while but I fell out of playing a long time ago.

    • In her 2013 Sky TV Thronecast interview [link below at 5:32 – 7:00], Maisie Williams examined the Arya Funko Pop and noticed that unlike Cersei’s, the Arya Funko Pop didn’t have eyebrows…

    I wonder if there is a typo: It says the Arya Funko Pop is “[n]ow available for pre-order,” and “will ship in January, 2020.”

    Do they mean January 2021… or is it on sale now and will ship right away? If the latter, it’s kind of strange that they have not updated the HBO Store web page.

    I’ll have to dig further. I want instant gratification! I would not want to “pre-order” this and have to wait six months or more to get it. 😡

  155. These are so great! I loved the “Jon Snow Package” lol. The Queen in the North Funko is so amazing, I can’t believe the level of detail that Funko gave to that dress!
    The chess is gorgeous! I need a new chess set… and my birthday is on Friday! Pretty please!
