Nikolaj Coster-Waldau & Jerome Flynn film in Portstewart, as new details about filming surface

Filming continues on Portstewart Strand for Game of Thrones season 5. More locals shared images today, again confirming that Nikolaj Coster-Waldau and Jerome Flynn are both filming there.

We also have our first clear(ish) look at what appear to be Dornish retainers.

UPDATE: A filming plan has turned up on Instagram, indicating that the tent camp spotted previously may belong to Ellaria Sand, and giving hints about the fight sequence taking place on the beach.

In addition, Dean-Charles Chapman has wrapped his first day of shooting on set in Belfast as King Tommen Baratheon. DCC Finally, Extras NI put out a casting call for a young boy close to the Belfast area, to act as a body double.

Cian: From the casting call details, it would seem that the boy may be substituting for Robin Arryn. Also, the Dornishmen above look to be consistent with the brief glimpse we got of some in the season 4 premiere.

  1. The Dornish stuff is proving intriguing. Are Jaime and Bronn going to arrive

before the Queenmaker plot goes down…in the middle of or like Ser Balon in the books, afterwards. It’s looking like thye’re going to be in the thick of it.

Any news of Gemma Whelan yet? Using her as an indicator as to whether the other Greyjoys are going to put in an appearance this season.

  2. Robin Arryn body double? is someone going to need some Sweet Milk? just a few drops of course

  3. Seems a very wise move to let not just one, but two popular characters introduce us to Dorne. Non-readers would probably be less interested, if they were just thrown into a new location with new characters only.

  4. TheTouchOfFrost,

Nothing solid but her CV says she is signed for “multiple seasons, ongoing”. I think her rather unnecessary appearances in seasons 3 and 4 prove that D&D want to keep her in Unsullied minds and that they have something planned for her. Or maybe that’s just wishful thinking…

I hope she’ll be a regular this season. I want them to give her more to work with, which definitely happens with the books at this point.

  5. Chloe,

This. Also, ages 6-9? Doesn’t seem at all like Robyn. I just checked and his actor is 14 years old. They wouldn’t cast a 6 year old stand in for a 14 year old actor, would they?

  6. jentario,

I think I’m one of the few that didn’t mind her role last season. Was only a relatively small scene, kept her fresh in the viewers mind ( like you said), didn’t change the overarcing plot massively and I think it developed her as a leader and Ramsay as batshit!
    I would have thought that

    Balon would have to die

this season. So maybe she has a role to play in that plotline . Maybe some interaction with him about what’s become of Theon before he….and the (hopefully) following

    Kingsmoot

    Still hoping for

    Euron and Victarion

even if they’re just introduced at the end of the season. Will wait and hope!

  7. Chloe:
The possible Robin body double looks like so tiny.Only 4ft to 4ft 5?

Ah. The size and age seem to have been edited in later.

  8. I also like this strategic change, with well known characters introducing us to this new region, but it still worries me how are they gonna pull off the riverlands storyline…

  9. I am pretty much excited about Jaime & Bronn being in Dorne, despite the fact it seemed weird at first.

Frankly, I am not so big fan of AFFC plotline and structure, (much less of ADWDs) so every change, if clever, is more than welcomed for me.

I am just a bit curious (not so worried) about plotlines which seem changed drasticlly, as obvious lack of certain characters, who seemed important at that point in the books.
As I said in other threads we are in completely vague territory concerning this stage of adaptation because we do not know the final developpement of every plotline.
Somehow I strongly believe that Benioff and Weiss do know what they are doing because they know some important facts we ordinary mortals don t.

  10. That extra/stand-in casting call sounds more like it is for Rickon. Similar age, height, and hair style.

  11. Jaime looks like he’s wearing the same outfit he wore when he trained with Bronn in s4, though RD the commenter yesterday said it was a purple riding jacket instead. These looks at the Dornish guardsmen’s uniforms are much clearer. Good finds all around!

  12. jentario,

Yes, Lino Facioli’s height is listed as 5’2″… he’s small, but not that small.
I can’t think of any child character who fits this description. I don’t know how tall Art Parkinson is now, but he’s 12/almost 13, even though his character is supposed to be, what, 9? Still not sure why they would ask for a child 6-9 years old.

  13. Tyrion Pimpslap,

Maybe Rickon, but only weeks ago Osha’s actress said she has no idea if she’s in season 5 so it seems a bit unlikely. Wouldn’t they give her some notice about it?

  14. Tyrion Pimpslap,

I think you are correct, sir.
So Rickon goes from being in the background rarely speaking to having a body double do his work? XD
    Ouch!

jentario: Maybe Rickon, but only weeks ago Osha’s actress said she has no idea if she’s in season 5 so it seems a bit unlikely.

Maybe it is for a Greenseeing vision as Bran searches for his family?

  15. jentario,

Looks like a Sand Snake (singular) to me..
I don’t know her face that well, but it looks like it could be Rosabell Laurenti Sellers to me. Or a Sand Snake stunt double…. So hard to ell.

  16. Hugo:
I also like this strategic change, with well known characters introducing us to this new region, but it still worries me how are they gonna pull off the riverlands storyline…

Well the only parts of the Riverland story that weren’t filler have been removed

Harrenhal isn’t full of Gregor’s men
Riverrun is being run by Walder Frey
And a certain Lady isn’t in it, at least for a while… so

  17. Greenjones,

Well, that’s an interesting pic. So many questions now, What is Ellaria’s Camp, somewhere they’ll film dorne’s first scene to establish it before going to sunspear? The place where Ellaria is before arriving at sunspear where she ends up meeting Jaimie and Bronn? The place she and the sandsnakes hide in to wait for Jaimie? That’s all under the assumption of Jaimie being smuggled thing from Obara’s audition, if not maybe Jaimie travels back with Ellaria? Idk, all I know is I need season 5 for yesterday.Well, that’s an interesting pic. 18. Does this mean a Sand Snake takes the place of Aerys Oakheart during the Queenmaker plot?
  19. “Fight sequence. Snake killing”??

Interesting that Ellaria is present. Have Jaime and Bronn accompanied her back to Dorne along with Gregor’s head? Or are they filming the Queenmaker scene already? Is it a Sand Snake that is being killed?

EDIT: looks like a few of us are thinking the same thing.

  20. mariamb,

I think those are distinct scenes they’re filming, which aren’t necessarily going to be in the same episode (though they could be).

But I do believe that the fight scene refers to

the Queenmaker plot, a Sand Snake will die in place of Aerys Oakheart, and Jaime and Bronn will be involved in it.
  21. Don’t rush to that conclusion. I doubt a Sand Snake is being killed this early on. Especially considering the Tyene audition which happens AFTER a fight between Bronn and Tyene. Tyene and the other Sand Snake seemed rather happy with everything and I doubt they would be if their half-sister just died. It could easily be a Sand Snake killing someone else, maybe some of Doran’s men who are sent with Hotah. Also, “Snake” might not refer to the Sand Snakes, could be that guy that fights Bronn from RD’s report.
  22. Interestingly we’ve heard nothing about Nell Tiger Free being present for all of this.

If they’re going with the Queenmaker angle, wouldn’t she have to be around? Especially if they go with the Darkstar wounding her business.

    jentario,

    Exactly.

  23. I don’t think it refers to a Sand Snake, I think it’s an actual Snake.

Flynn and Nikolaj are the only major cast members spotted. People could have missed Ellaria under the tent, but people spotted only Dornish male soldiers attacking Bronn, no women, no Sand Snakes. Something could be filmed later this week, but I think it will involve an actual snake, as a symbolic thing. I think Bronn and Jaime will leave Dorne before the Queenmaker plot.
  24. Sue the Fury,

When do you think Bronn and Jaime will fight the Sand Snakes then? Also, Bronn is apparently locked up with them in the Tyene audition. If Doran locks them up then, to me that would imply the Queenmaker plot. I know they get locked up prior to it in AFFC, but without Arianne, it kindof has to be their scheme, doesn’t it?
  25. Sue the Fury,

    That is definitely possible.

And it could be related to the scene that one poster described the other day where Bronn pulled the sword out of the ground to fight the rider on the horse. The rider could have possibly ambushed them after Bronn kills the snake, if he does kill one.
  26. Or you know

    an actual snake…

I can imagine a scene where a snake sneaks up on Jaime or Bronn or Myrcella and a Sand Snake / Trystane saves them. Establishing Action scene or so.

But yeah, it may also be a Sand Snake taking on Darkstars role re Myrcella, that’d be Obara probably since in the books she’s going after Darkstar?

  27. Could it be a sand snake killing someone? Bronn perhaps? I hope they don’t kill him off but I have this feeling that he’ll be taking Arys’ place this season.

  28. Greenjones,

I’m sorry but could you elaborate on that? What events are you referring to? I didn’t watch the audition and now you have me intrigued…

  29. Josla,

One of my above comments alludes to what happens. There are transcripts of the audition available online though the leaked video itself has been deleted.

  30. All this Bronn and Jaime stuff is so exciting. Those 2 as a double act for an extended run is going to be gold. The filming speculation season is well and truly underway now!

  31. Thanks for the link Morgan but even after reading that I still don’t see how Greenjones is so sure that Bronn will not take Arys’ place. It seems to me that Tyene was kinda flirting with Bronn and iirc that’s exactly what Arianne does with Arys. As I said I hope I’m wrong but I still think it’s possible.

  32. Josla,

Because the scene in the audition takes place after the confrontation on the beach. Bronn has already been wounded by her poisoned daggers and they have both been imprisoned.
  33. I really can’t see Bronn behaving in the stupid manner in which Arys did. He’s not going to risk his life for “love” he’s been around the block too many times for that and even warned Tyrion about falling in love with a whore ( not saying the Sand Snakes are whores but he’d be wise to them using their charms to try and manipulate him).
I don’t think they’d put such a massive spoiler in that obvious a place although I do think one of the Sand Snakes will die (perhaps Obara?) and Hotah will kill someone in some significant manner. Also have the feeling we may lose Bronn this season although I hope we don’t.

  34. Wow! All these things have me wanting Season 5 to start tonight! I cant wait to see Jaime, and Bronn mix it up, they are gonna make a great duo. The snarkiness is gonna be priceless. I am so glad I found this site, WIC has gone to the crapper every since Fansided or whatever took it over. Keep up the great work on here.

  35. Mormont,
Walder Frey is at the Twins, he is running the riverlands yes, but not it’s regional capital, Riverrun, and what about blackfish? Isn’t he supposed to be holding Riverrun?
I’m just curious about what are they gonna do with this, because Roose Bolton already controls all of the north now that Ramsey flayed the last of the ironborn in the lands, but that cunt walder frey still hasn’t control of all of the riverlands.

  36. I do not believe any cast member will die there. But maybe Snakes will kill someone from Jaime group, possibly someone with blonde hair, which make them think they got Jaime. Which would explain their happy mood while they are imprisoned together with Bronn.

  37. Regarding the linked audition tape transcript: Who might be the woman off camera who’s talking to Obara? It’s definitely not another sandsnake, as she’s talking about Oberyn as “yourfather”. I think it has to be Ellaria, the only other possibility would be Arianne.

  38. Hugo,

I’m currently going with the theory that he’s joined the Brotehrhood Without Banners if LS isn’t turning up. At least I hope as it would at least keep some shape to the original plot which at this point I’m starting to worry about a little…hopefully needlessly.

  39. Greenjones,

Ok that makes sense. I may have skipped the part were they both got caught. Anyways, like someone stated above if he’s going to be killed it will probably be by Hotah’s axe. Gods forbid…

  40. Hugo:

In the S3 finale, it’s heavily implied in Walder and Roose’s conversation after the Red Wedding that Walder has been gifted Riverrun by the Lannisters just as Roose has been gifted Winterfell. Additionally, the Blackfish is said to be “on the run”, not back holding Riverrun. They basically punted the Blackfish’s story ahead to after the Riverrun siege where he’s escaped to parts unknown.

  41. Josla,

I think Hotah will intervene in the Bronn and Jaime v. Sand Snakes fight, to ensure that Jaime and Bronn live actually. It’s not in Doran’s interests to let them die. Hopefully all of this makes the opportunity for a Jaime-Doran conversation, which would just be awesome. Siddig and Nikolaj going head-to-head would AWESOME.
  42. Pretty awesome how like clockwork a couple of hours after a post goes up here, an almost identical one shows up on WiC with the exact same tweets and pictures. They don’t really bother to analyze anything but I guess knowing what we know about the crew there, it’s all just a massive coincidence that they’re uncovering the exact same info (just a little bit later than here).

Edit: And as expected, if you post there with any kind of suggestion around this, it’s immediately deleted which probably explains why they have like 10 comments on every post now.

  43. King Tommen,

Yes, and they put up a post dedicated to that harder-to-find Rosabell Laurenti Sellers interview in Italian a few hours after it was posted here. Heck of a coincidence.

Sorry they keep deleting your posts. No point in trying, I don’t think they’re going to stop.

  44. Sue the Fury,

At least they haven’t quoted comments from here yet (to be the best of my knowledge). Like that fellow RD who’s account of what he saw in many ways made yesterday’s thread. He was a wotw exclusive and there was no credible way for them to steal that one.

I predicted yesterday when I posted the Laurenti-Sellers interview that if I’d done so on wicnet, they’d have devoted an article entirely to it, when really it only merited being part of a roundup (like you all did today). I guess, I didn’t have to post it there for them to make an entire article out of it!

  45. Greenjones:
    Josla,

    Greenjones,
I’d love that for sure. I hope you’re right ’cause those two together would be awesome to watch. The show has been pairing characters that didn’t meet in the books since season one and Jaime has no business in Dorne anyways so why not? 😉

Was the RD quote taken from the comments here and copied there or did he post on both sites?

If they went out of their way to fake a commenter quote on another site as one of their own commenters, then that’s a special kind of dedicated desperation.

  47. King Tommen,

To the best of my knowledge they made a point of not including that tidbit of info. While all of the other stuff was just social media stuff we’d dug up in the comments here, that was a comment exclusive to this site which it would be a bit too obvious if they stole.

  48. TheTouchOfFrost,

How crazy would it be if they subed Arys out for Jamie and he dies this season. Lol people would flip the hell out. It would explain

the removal of Lady Stoneheart if Brienne brings him back to her and she kills him.
  49. Even though I can understand the changes they’re making and agree that it’s a good idea to use established characters to introduce Dorne I think I’m going to miss

Jaime breaking the siege at Riverrun. It showed him solving a problem using his mind instead of violence. That’s an important piece of character development.

I just hope they do something similar in the show so he still gets the character development.

  50. Greenjones,

    Interesting!
Wish I could simply hit a button to un-blur it! XD
I tried a few things, but of course it had little real effect on the photo.

Maybe a Queenmaker or equivalent scene? Or it could be the fight scene people have reported seeing the actors practicing.
  51. Gary,

I can certainly speak for myself and say I’d be massively pissed off! I think Jaime will have an important part to play in the end game…but we shall see!

  52. Huhh, fansided… Worst name ever.

What I’m looking forward to see in S5 is where Doran

will send the San Snakes, which will probably be in the finale. Will they cut Oldtown? Will Tyene go to King’s Landing to infiltrate the Faith? Obara at Storm’s end to see Aegon? Nym as an emissary in the Small Council?
  53. Ragman’s Harbor,

I’m so intrigued by that question too!

My guess is Ellaria (yes I know not a Sand Snake) will go to King’s Landing to join the Small Council, Nymeria will go to Oldtown if the Citadel and Sarella’s part in the books is important, and Tyene will go to KL to spy on the Sparrows. I’m, not sure Aegon makes the series. Therefore, I think Obara will stay in or around Dorne… maybe even be killed if a Sand Snake has to die.
  54. Darquemode,

They specifically mentioned that 8 Sand Snakes exist in show canon, which makes me think that we’ll probably see Sarella being Sarella and not someone else taking her role. It also makes little sense to pull Ellaria out of King’s Landing only to place her back there a season later (especially since the Sand Snakes are enough to carry the Queenmaker plot). Ellaria would have been used as the show’s Taena Merrrywhether if that was the case and they’d just skip her arrival to Dorne. So I think Nymeria will be going to King’s Landing with Tyene (the former to the small council and the latter to the Faith).

Obara… is more difficult. They’ve (sensibly) cut Darkstar, so that whole storyline with Obara and Hotah is effectively gone. Now we have Doran, Ellaria, Obara and Hotah in Dorne with nothing to do… supposedly.

If Trystane gets sent to Dany (which has to happen if they’re going to give Doran a plan and not make him look like an idiot) then Doran is left with no heirs (since Trystane is set to become the king of Westeros). The only logical decision on his part at this point is to get himself another heir, and the only way to do that is to legitimize a Sand Snake. Which will get legitimized? The oldest one. Obara. The one that has nothing to do anyway. This also puts her right where Arianne is before TWOW begins and makes the Aegon thing seem more likely. And the show has gone as far as mentioning Elia Sand as the most willful Sand Snake, and she only comes in when Arianne sets off to meet Aegon. And then there’s the two Golden Company mentions. So that’s even more Aegon evidence. It would be odd to set it all up so nicely only to end up doing nothing with it.

I think the show will have an Aegon equivalent (as in, someone that Varys backs to whom he gives the Golden Company and who Dorne end up siding with).

  55. jentario,

    Certainly possible…
I keep going back and forth on whether or not

Trystane will be sent to Dany. Sending the sole heir seems more naive than the plan in the books, although like you said it would show Doran scheming from the desert. If they do send him I can see Obara having the role you mentioned, although having a Sand Snake inherit feels wrong to me on some level….

However, I do not think we will see all 8 Sand Snakes just because they mentioned there are 8 last year.

They could certainly hold back Sarella until next year once Sam arrives in Oldtown (if they go that route), but do you really think we will meet all of Ellaria’s younger daughters? I’m skeptical, but it is not impossible of course.
Personally I would prefer Indira Varma as Ellaria sent to be on the Small Council… No offense to Jessica Henwick!

Until I hear something about another new role being cast

that fits Young Griff / Aegon I am assuming he is cut. To me it feels like an awfully large plotline to add to this season, and I do not think any AFFC/ ADWD material will be in Seasons 6. Unlike some I have no issues whatsoever with Varys’ motivations if Aegon is cut. In the books Aegon makes sense and is a necessity for Varys’s motivations, but on the TV show I can see ways to make him a Targayren supporter easily enough.

I hope I’m wrong on this point though!
