Game of Thrones Season 5, Episode 3 “High Sparrow” Video Recap Roundup

GOT_MP_092514_EP503-4028[1]

Hello and welcome to the third Video Recap Roundup of Season 5! Here are our critics and commentators for the week discussing “High Sparrow.”

This week was not so fun for some characters so we’re starting out with the very fun Jonathan of Gay of Thrones

It’s Ozzy Man, here again, bringing that Aussie wit and awareness of Foxtel’s objective horribleness

HappyCool chooses this week a thumbnail that could have a fairly robust caption contest

Cenk and Ben were in DC meeting the author of this post on Friday but they managed to get back for this week’s video

And SourceFed Nerd finally jumped on the recap bandwagon this week. Trisha has departed, so please let me know what you think about this lineup.

Sawyer7mage – Solo review of 5.3

Schmoesknow – An *UNSULLIED* review by schmoes Kristian Harloff and Mark Ellis.

Think Hero – I took these guys out to see if anyone would notice and you did so they’re back

Sticking in the History of Westeros this week

Note: Someone in pretty much each of the videos with a couple of exceptions is Sullied to some degree so they will not be divided this season.

I do read your comments for feedback so thank you for being responsive in the past posts! SF Nerd was met with a lukewarm response last season so this could just be a cameo. As usual, who got it right, which video personalities reign supreme, and no screener spoilers please. Have a nice weekend!

  1. You got to meet Ben and Cenk, Bex? That’s awesome! I hope it went well. I’m a big fan of all their work, even outside of the confines of What the Flick.

Great set of videos this week! The reception to this episode appears to be extremely positive, at least among the reviewers that I listen to.

Two additions to the list: Andy Greenwald and Chris Ryan talk about “High Sparrow” on Hollywood Prospectus from 1:00 to 17:00. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CKEwNY4x0nc

And this week’s episode of Watch the Thrones. It doesn’t look like there’s a video this week, unfortunately. Audio only for now. http://grantland.com/hollywood-prospectus/watch-the-thrones-podcast-who-won-the-week-in-game-of-thrones-and-what-is-volantis/

  2. Emmighty Sofia is another good recapper I’ve been listening to recently, thanks to someone who posted a link to her videos in one of these round-ups. While I generally prefer group discussions to solo reviews, I’ve really been enjoying her thoughts on these past three episodes. She’s Unsullied, and extremely enthusiastic about the show. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rDzNXPJ4ufg

  3. Jared,
I went to a live taping and got to meet Cenk, yes. Ben was meeting people too but I find him too sexy and didn’t want to make it weird. Both were very nice to fans.

  4. G’day Bex.

I love Gay of Thrones always and who doesn’t love them an Axe. Ozzyman rocks (I wish he would slow down just a bit).

Now the four dudes at the granite kitchen island. There is something that I like there. I love the Unsullied guy saying things that are totally not right and the Sullied just has to sit there with a zipped lip. LOL. I would watch it again.

SF Nerd was just a bit over the top, trying to be very funny and cool and just sounding off in the wrong places. Doesn’t work for me, won’t watch it again.

I tend to watch these for the comic relief rather than a straight up review.

    Thanks for your efforts!!

  5. From watching some of the “Watch the Flick” review it’s true that “dynasty” is a word that is pronounced differently on opposite sides of the Atlantic. Americans (at least going by American programmes I have watched) tend to say “Die-nasty” whereas in the UK “din-asty” is more prevalent. There was an ’80s soap that in the UK had a nicknames “Dysentry”. And as for reviewers, don’t let’s forget Jan from “Flicks and the City” – her reviews are short and to the point, but I like them.

  6. Totally off topic, but still GoT related.

GRRM has posted about 20 topics to his blog since Season 5 started. Not one of them has been about GoT.

Is GRRM mad that the show is finishing before him?

  7. HelloThere,

Knowing how much time GRRM spends on that puppygate crap makes me ill. When one spends more time worrying about awards and recognition, one has lost the soul. The Hugo crap will work itself out through the bowels, as most crap does.

  8. The Bastard:

Why should he be angry? He has had YEARS to complete at least book 6 and still is probably two years away from that, not to mention book 7.

There is also the premise that “if you don’t have anything good to say, don’t say anything at all.” Or he may be “blocked” by contract from saying anything regarding the books to the shows.

Not sure, but certainly – at least in my opinion – GRRM has had ample opportunity to write book 6. He can take all the time he wants to take, fans will still buy the book no matter how long it takes, but the show passing him can only be pegged square on his shoulders

  9. Hodor’s Bastard,

I don’t think that’s fair. Martin has always been a very vocal and visible member of SF/F/H authors community. He loves attending cons, spending time with fans and fellow authors, sharing his views on a whole range of topics. He’s a true geek in the most positive sense of the word. It’s no surprise then that this Hugo “scandal” is important to him; he’s been deeply rooted in this community almost his whole life.

  10. JCDavis: Why should he be angry? He has had YEARS to complete at least book 6 and still is probably two years away from that, not to mention book 7.

I agree the fault is only with himself. Still doesn’t mean he can’t be sulking about it. Even if he isn’t the biggest fan of the show right now, why not at least talk about it slightly?

  11. Mr Fixit,

Fair enough. I am miffed. After the 36,000th word that he dedicated to the topic, often repeating himself (like “words are wind” or “wherever whores go” in ADwD), I threw up my arms. “OK, we get it!” I just hope he uses some of the loaded/bloated material that is floating around this controversy to bolster his “Faith Militant” plotline in TWoW. Maybe there will be a new “Brad Torgersen”-type minor Sparrow character who gets eviscerated in the most pleasant-to-read manner. 🙂

  12. Wow, AxeChucker loves seeing his face on camera just a taaaaaad much. Even so far as going to extreme closeup. Lovely.

  13. That 2 hour podcast that was in your list – Seriously, who has time to watch to all of that!? I got 10 minutes in and I just couldn’t continue. So boring! zzzzzz A podcast recap/review shouldn’t be longer than the actual episode, ffs.

What The Flick and Ozzy man’s are the most entertaining. They must stay on your list.

  14. Too many of these and sadly not enough time. I only watch What The Flick. I’ve been watching them first thing after watching episodes, before reading any reviews/comments, etc. I’m hoping that starting from the 5th episode onwards, they post their recap quickly after each episode airs. They had screeners for the first 4, so those went up fast.

  15. I was wondering what happened to SF Nerd. I like the enthusiasm by the two unsullied, however, it’s disappointing that Trisha is gone. She did a pretty good job of keeping them focused. This new moderator just seems to encourage and even start nonsense tangents. Trying to cover 3 eps in 30 minutes they ended up missing a lot of stuff.

Also, despite the name Game of Thongs is always enjoyable. They are sullied but their recaps are unsullied friendly:

  16. WalkerWhite,

Lots of people! You may not like detailed analysis, but these guys know the material better than anyone else listed, and a lot of fans like that.

  17. History of Westeros is the one for me. They are in-depth and have good insight. They also have a show-only (unsullied) review, not just the book-to-show review.

  18. Ohhh, you got a History of Westeros link in here! Smart move. Aziz and Ashaya easily have the most detailed, skeptical and thorough, yet upbeat and unbias analysis out there. When universities begin offering courses in George R.R. Martin’s hallmark literature (and they should), the folks behind History of Westeros will be the foremost professors in their field. If you’re deep into studying ASOIAF and you’re not subscribed to their channels, I really don’t know what you’re doing with your life 🙂 But like they used to say on Reading Rainbow, don’t take my word it, check out their episode on the Doom of Valyria for yourself: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nFyXGGTMeYQ

Seriously though, thank you so much for listing my absolute favorite stream out there in your article, and among so many of their wonderful peers. It means a lot to me as a fan to see my heroes getting the publicity they deserve by such a distinguished website as Watchers on the Wall, and I’m sure it means a lot to them too.
