Filming with Emilia Clarke beginning in Navarre and more prepping in Peñíscola

Shooting begins in Navarre, Spain this week and Emilia Clarke is in the area, having skipped the Emmys for filming.

RTVE, a Spanish TV and Radio company, has video on their website Espana Directo about the ongoing preparations for filming in Peñíscola, Spain (it starts at the 12:40 mark).  They lead with a recap of Game of Thrones fantastic Emmy wins on Sunday and then show city workers modifying a plaza to get ready for filming.

Video after the break!

From the video, it sounds like filming will begin in about two days time and production has to clear the plaza of all modern traffic signs and items as a result.  It also sounds like they expect to have quite a few extras in the scenes shot there- the report mentioned about 1,000 extras.

The reporter’s attempts to get anyone to admit that the preparations were for Game of Thrones were amusing.  At least HBO is making an effort to keep things more secret this year. What scenes do you think they will be shooting in the plaza at Peñíscola? Locals news report say that extras are being fitted for costumes as soldiers, slaves and Unsullied.

Another big shoot, the one with 400 extras, is expected to begin in Navarre today according to Noticias de Navarra.   The article has a photo of some props the crew will be using staged in Bardenas Reales Natural Park, a semi-arid desert area in southeast Spain.  The reporter spotted what looked to be Dothraki-like structures and extras who were fitted for costumes said the style was Dothraki.  So safe to assume that these scenes will be part of Dany’s storyline.  The extras casting call was also clearly Dothraki.

In order to prevent photos of the filming all entrances to that part of the park has been closed to both car and foot traffic until Sept. 25th, so fans may have a hard time catching a glimpse of filming!

Also headed to Spain this week is Eddie Eyre, the English actor cast as “Ser Alfred Hunrith” a while back. He was reportedly working on stunt fighting. His credit has since been removed from his CV, and there’s no character by that name in the novels so there was a mystery who this character is.  Whoever he’s playing, the actor is headed for the Game of Thrones set soon.

  1. Eddie eyre is complaining about working in the low 80s with little humidity? My man has a banana split instead of a banana…. If HBO is keeping any secrets I’m sure WotW will unearth them soon enough!

  2. There are no Westerosi scenes filming anytime soon in Spain except for ToJ, are there? Navarra and Peniscola are Essos and I don’t imagine someone named Alfred Hunrith suddenly appearing in Dany’s or Tyrion’s storyline.

Maybe it’s the code name for Arthur Dayne. Handsome, charismatic, looks like a noble knight. Just what they wanted in the casting call.

  3. Does the amount of extras at Peñíscola mean that the Mereen siege will be showed and that we will have two battles for the next season?

  4. Some filming news finally! 🙂 Looks like a pretty big crowd-filled scene at Navarre with Dothraki. I hope some fans manage to take at least a few pictures. I wonder what place in Essos this will stand-in for.

    dothrakian raven,
I’m pretty sure that some form of the Meereen siege will be shown. It has been set-up with moving Tyrion in charge there. And Daenerys will arrive with the Dothraki to sway its outcome (just as Jon will arrive with the Wildings to sway a Northern battle for Winterfell.)

  5. My wild guess is that Eddie Eyre is Ser Arthur Dayne…. Just read his twitter info “Actor. Runs, fights, rides horses, shouts loudly. Once chopped down a tree with a claw-hammer.”

  6. Are we 100% sure that he isn’t flashback Rhaegar. Put some long, blonde hair on him and he sure fits my image.

  7. K Noelle,

Arthur Dayne was name checked in season 4, and the story of his death was briefly alluded to in a close up of the white book. I would say ‘Ser Alfred Hunrith’ probably isn’t the name of the character he is playing. Or, he may just be an unnamed extra in the TOJ scene, perhaps one of the men who fights alongside

    Ned.
  8. Sullied by Knight,

He could be Rhaegar but in what context will we see Rhaegar in a flashback, we assume we are getting a ToJ flashback and Dayne will be in that.
I don’t see where we use a Rhaegar flashback unless its to show him and Lyanna together.
That being said I hope we never see or meet Rhaegar in the show or books, I like that we just get secondhand knowledge of him

  9. I admit, I had to chuckle at the comment about the heat in Spain. Yes, I know Spain can get hot, but approximately 85 degrees with 19% humidity is not bad, at all. Yes, I realize he’s British, and that may be considered hot to someone who is used to the climate in England, but that really does seem to be a fairly mild temperature. I’m guessing he’s never had to do outdoor theatre in an unforgiving hot and/or humid environment.

Yeah for more filming news, and I’m with those who think the given name for his character either means it’s a place-holding name, and not really the name of the character he’s playing, or he is primarily a fighter, and will not be one of the characters we’re expecting for the exterior ToJ scene.

  10. Ella,

I wouldn’t commit to the May date. That’s probably just an estimated airing time because the present premier date of season 6 is unknown.

  11. Maybe with the Queen gone, the Yunkai will try to take Meeren. Dany will save the day with a dothraki horde riding a-la-Rohirim

  12. Ugh. Dany and the Dothraki again in the show is the story I am most excited about. I’m not counting on pictures because according to the site Noticias de Navarra the are is closed. No one will be allowed to enter the filming are until the filming is finished.

  13. Lucius,

I think so! The Yunkai were ok but that’s because Dany was rulling the city. With her gone and probably dead, I think Yunkai might try to invade Meereen. She might show up with thousands of dothraki to save the day and bring some fire and blood. And hopefully head to Westeros in the season finale.

  14. maybe he was being sarcastic when saying it’s going to be a “tough” week lol that weather sounds pretty freaking great right about now…

hoping someone can sneak in there and get us some more pics!

  15. Is it normal for fight training to begin a full month before filming or is that usually reserved for scenes like Mountain vs Viper? It seems like the actor had some prior experience wielding a sword so he must be in a pretty big scene if he needed to train for this long.

  16. Kay,

Not everything needs to be parallel between Jon and Daenerys. 😉 I don’t think it will be that way. It’s very possible that Dany will come with her newly acquired Khalasar just in time to turn things around Meereen, because there will be quite possibly a huge chaos (as I can imagine) … I remember her conversation with Hizdar in Daznak Pit, which makes me think Dany will go full Fire and Blood in Mereen. But, I’m not sure same scenario will be with Jon being triumphant at the end of the day. There is Littlefinger/Vale element and he’ll take any kind of advantage. I think it will be LF who will decide everything (kinda of a wildcard). Sneaky bastard.

    mau,

They can split 8th season into two parts. I hope so.

  17. Nymeria Warrior Queen

I think it’s more the British sense of humour rather than the weather. He’s saying it’s great he is working in lovely weather, it’s our unique (and possibly a bit strange) ironic humour!

  18. Any chance he’s playing Aegon? I assumed he wasn’t going to be in the show…but maybe. Location is right. But not for Arthur I think.

  19. mau: No. They said 8 years.

LOL, and they came out and said seven years for sure in 2014. Your point?

Until there’s an official announcement from HBO that eight is the final season, I’m not counting anything out.

  20. As others have said, considering what we know of the Spanish filming, it makes sense that this Ser Alfred would be just a codename for Arthur Dayne, or someone else involved in the TOJ scene. “Ser Alfred Hunrith”, played by a blonde British guy, doesn’t really fit in Meereen or the Dothraki Sea, does he? The TOJ is the only other thing that they are currently filming in Spain, that we know of.

    mau,

    Good!

    M,

    Keep on dreaming.

  21. M: LOL, and they came out and said seven years for sure in 2014. Your point?

They never said there won’t be S8. Actually, they said 8 seasons before 2014.

  22. Does anyone knows who is the dominant writer, dan or david? I know that the are supposed to be equal, but we all know that nothing is equal in this world. Who do you think?

  23. Benioff, June 28, 2013

We are both obsessed with Breaking Bad, and the great thing about Vince Gilligan is you he’s taking that character some place and that he has a beginning, middle and end in mind. And for us what is most enticing about this series is, if we’re lucky enough to get to the end, there will be 80 hours of screen time with a beginning, middle, and a real end. Not something that feels like 80 separate episodes, but instead something where, if you were masochistic enough, you could go into a theater and watch a marathon of the whole thing.

    http://deadline.com/2013/06/emmy-q-a-with-game-of-thrones-david-benioff-and-d-b-weiss-532200/

  24. Kaka,

Benioff has far more experience. Most notably as a novelist(‘The 25th Hour’ and ‘City Of Thieves’), but also in Hollywood(‘The 25th Hour’ and ‘Troy’).

  25. Kaka,

Benioff, probably, at least initially, as he is an experienced novelist and scriptwriter. Nowadays, who knows. I’d say it’s more likely to be equal in later seasons.

  26. Kaka:
Does anyone knows who is the dominant writer, dan or david? I know that the are supposed to be equal, but we all know that nothing is equal in this world. Who do you think?

I don’t know, but I suspect Benioff. Didn’t he give the acceptance speeches at the Emmys?

  27. A couple of things:
Bardenas is not in the southeast Spain, is in the southeast Navarre. Navarre is in the north of Spain. Maybe you confused it because Almería is in the southeast Spain. Luka Nieto can confirm it. 🙂
And it is “España Directo”, not “Espana Directo” lol.

One more thing: if Eddie Eyre is in Madrid, that means he probably will be shooting in Castillo de Zafra, AKA ToJ. The closest airport to Guadalajara is in Madrid, and I think they were going to film there during these days, right?

  28. High Sparrow,

Navarre is pretty much as northern as it gets in Spain. Almost. The Bardenas semi-desert is an oddity in the area. I live a few hours away from the place, at the city of San Sebastián in the Basque Country, and I’m surrounded by lush green. So I understand the confusion; a desert in Northern Spain is weird. But that’s the case.

And yeah, the “ñ” isn’t a weird Spanish accented “n”. It’s another letter altogether, pronounced completely differently. Confusing them makes as much sense as confusing a “v” with a “w” or a “u”. So it’s more important to get that right than the tildes, the Spanish accents.

  29. High Sparrow,

I think it’s a good bet that he will be a part of TOJ filming. I just can’t place him as one of the characters. Perhaps with a wig and some makeup he could pass for Dayne. He will need to look more rugged than the photos I have seen of him.

  30. It feels like we’ve seen hardly anything of Emilia and co. so far in filming, but now we’re getting to their leg of the overseas shoots, which usually yield a lot of photos.

In other (non-)filming news, Andini Ria, a blogger/fan of Sophie’s, met her earlier today and was told that she isn’t filming in Belfast for the next two months, which would indicate that whatever else she’s filming this year is in December (or late November, I guess, depending on how strict she was being with the term). December is when the actor who plays Yohn Royce is back too, so that could be taken as an indicator they may be filming together.

  31. Sean C.,

In terms of exterior locations, Clarke is filming at Bardenas and a field in the middle of nowhere in Almería, that we know of. They can and will protect those areas for miles and miles (as this article confirms.) Don’t expect the same number of pictures we got from a crowded tourist location such as the Old Town of Girona.

  32. Luka Nieto,

Yeah, I guess I was thinking more of the Meereenese crew, but obviously Emilia’s not with them this year (at first, anyway). I’ll be interested to see what we get in Meereen, since that’s one area where not only have we run out of book material (more or less) but due to the seeming plotting changes it’s hard to guess exactly what will happen (casting information, likewise, being scarce).

  33. Sean C.,

And which means that Sansa is going to have less screentime this season? It seems that the whole season is loaded with so many events that there will be no room for everyone… Unless we get 60mins for all the eps (dreams)!

  34. He is definitely involved in tower of joy – arthur dayne or other. He has posted the temperature in Madrid. Navarra is 400km away from Madrid and the temperature at this time of the year is pretty much British. Guadalajara, however, is right next to Madrid and equally warm 🙂

  35. dothrakian raven,

Given the increased number of stories, as you say, it seems like screentime in general may be more widely-spread next year — though one should note that if she’s mainly shooting smaller or interior scenes with only a couple of actors, they don’t take that long to film (unless you’re Kubrick), compared to, e.g., the huge amount of shooting they’re doing in Saintfield.

  36. Sean C.:

In other (non-)filming news, Andini Ria, a blogger/fan of Sophie’s, met her earlier today and was told that she isn’t filming in Belfast for the next two months, which would indicate that whatever else she’s filming this year is in December (or late November, I guess, depending on how strict she was being with the term).December is when the actor who plays Yohn Royce is back too, so that could be taken as an indicator they may be filming together.

Does that mean that Sophie isn’t filming anything for the next two months, period? Wow. That takes us through to the end of November, pretty much, since it’s already the 22nd. She had a chunk of time off in August, too. She was filming in early August and for part of September in Belfast, I think. She was also spotted on the Winterfell set.

Sophie did recently say Sansa has an “amazing” year in Season 6, but it’s hard to see how her year could be so amazing if she isn’t, you know, on screen at all, unless she has one badass scene and is more or less AWOL for the rest of the season. Maybe that amazing scene has something to do with Yohn Royce, since he said he was filming in July and December, dates which appear to coincide to a certain extent with Sophie’s.

…Or it could be that Sansa doesn’t have an amazing year and Sophie is talking shit.

If Sansa’s screentime is cut drastically, I wouldn’t be surprised. There’s going to be a lot going on next year, in between Sam, the Greyjoys, Bran, Rickon, Dany off on her own, etc. and some storyline has to be cut to make room for the new stuff. Looks like it will be Sansa’s storyline getting the chop.

  37. M,

Being declared Queen Regent in the North in episode 10 would make amazing year for Sansa, even with less screentime.

  38. RobOSevens,

I agree. I would like him to remain more of a mystery. Even if we saw Rhaegar/Lyanna flashbacks, which I really don’t think we need, Rhaegar would not be fighting. We already know Eddie is involved in a fight scene and most likely the ToJ sequence. I never pictured Dayne as that much of a pretty-boy, but we’ll see!

  39. Does GRRM have nothing interesting and important for Sansa in TWOW, so D&D are able to use her as a Jayne Poole and than to put her in a backseat for S6?

  40. mau:
    M,

Being declared Queen Regent in the North in episode 10 would make amazing year for Sansa, even with less screentime.

It sounds like Sansa’s not involved in the Saintfield battle if Sophie Turner’s now off the hook and Saintfield battle filming is going to continue well into October, which seems strange when I think about it. I wouldn’t expect her to be leading armies or swinging a sword, but it seems weird that Sansa’s not even watching or nearby or anything. If Sansa is going to be declared queen regent of the North, which I doubt, you’d expect her to be in the vicinity when pretty much everyone fights everyone in the North.

It also seems strange for Sophie to be doing so little filming in a season where the North is going to be a storyline of huge importance, culminating in what sounds like the biggest battle the show has ever seen. It’s hard to see how Sansa could be sidelined, unless she disappears from the North altogether.

  41. M,

From various social media, etc. she was in Belfast basically from the end of SDCC (circa July 14th) through to at least August 5th (was next in Montreal on the August 8-10th), then in Belfast from August 11 to sometime after the 12th, and then circa September 13 to September 18.

  42. M,

The weird thing is, in some ways this actually does fit with what we know of the Northern storyline. For instance, the two Northern lords, the Smalljon and Karstark 2.0, are in only 2 and 3 episodes, respectively (and one imagines that episode 9 constitutes one of each of their appearances).

  43. jentario,

Even if she was watching the battle from afar, like her mother did in the Whispering Woods (more in the books than in the show), those things are not all filmed in the same time or place necessarily. Remember, people, what we see on-screen is an illusion. That may seem obvious, but then I see these comments… I mean, if she’s watching the battle, obviously she’d be far enough to be watching a bunch of CGI armies battling each other; the actress needs to be in front of green-screen, nothing else!

  44. Sean C.:

I’m more curious about the lack of filming time. Sansa really will be sitting out a huge chunk of Season 6. It seems like Kit’s been doing more filming in Belfast than Sophie has, LOL.

Sophie made some comment recently about wishing that Sansa’s jump had been properly cushioned or something like that. Maybe Sansa gets injured in the jump and while she escapes successfully is laid up for most of the season.

  45. mau,

That, I don’t know. Virtually all her filming last year was interiors, and I wasn’t really paying particular note to when she was in Ireland and when she wasn’t (this summer she was filming both GOT and X-Men: Apocalypse on different continents, so I was keeping track of when she was at work on each). So I don’t really have a point of comparison.

    M,

I don’t think Sophie would have said anything like that if it was an actual spoiler.

  46. I’m sure this has been addressed but I’m finally getting caught up on the books, is the show for sure not doing Aegons story? Been googling it and have seen nothing from the show writers and really no articles.

Btw I’m expecting Yunki/allies starting a siege end of the season and Dani and the iron fleet arriving beginning of the next season. So next season starts with a bang and Dani finally heading out to Westeros after setting up some sort of new government in slavers bay.

  47. Sean C.,

    You’re talking about this right?

Because all she said here about Sophie’s schedule was this, which doesn’t IMO imply that she’s not shooting in the coming weeks.

Also we talked about her schedule for the next few months because we always like to know which event we’re going to see each other next at and she’ll be attending the SAGs but nothing else that’s confirmed (also quite worried by the fact that she said she’s not filming GOT? Has she finished for the season or is she not allowed to talk about it?) Anyway, Sophie continues to inspire me, she is literally the sweetest to her fans and I cherish every meeting with her. She’s seriously the best thing to happen to my life.

  48. DW3sty,

I’m pretty sure that storyline will go faster than that. We won’t have a climactic Battle of Fire in Meereen; especially considering that we know for a fact the highly publicized Northern battle will take place in the last few episodes. If there is such a Battle or something equivalent, it can’t be much beyond the mid-season.

  49. Luka Nieto,

Luke I meant more like the pieces being in place at the end of the season for an early season 7 battle of fire since the battle of the north seems to end this season. I’m guessing Dani takes all season to get back and Tyrion is prepping the defenses aka season 2 except maybe the battle doesn’t start till the beginning of the following season?

  50. Sean C.,

Ah. Thanks. I think that’s likely because the Saintfield/Snowbowl stuff is the main thing going on NI for the moment, while the rest of the cast and crew is busy in Spain. I wouldn’t be worried at all about this meaning not enough Sansa in s6 or her dying.

  51. mau,

Ohhh. If it’s truly their final decision, I’m fine with that. GOT is such a juggernaut that HBO might be pushing for extended 8th season or even more. The Sopranos ended like that.

    Kay,

I hope you read whole comment and not just that. It’s not like I’m hating on them or eventual romance (I just hope no Jon/Daeny – King/Queen ending) , you know. I’m kinda fine with that romance and their eventual meeting and pretty much where their story is going in my mind right now. There will be plenty of paralells between them, like in every season other than that.

Littlefinger/Vale is the ultimate wildcard and I expect them to deliver final blow to The Boltons. After all LF wants the North for himself. I expect Jon to deal with Ramsay (Jon is not gonna die again … D&D are not that cruel 😀 ), but don’t expect full clean cut victory for Jon and Stark loyalists. Daeny will be the one with a big triumph and pumping up all fans for her arrival to Westeros, to wreck some sh*t. Meereen will perhaps return to the dirt, as she said it herself in Daznak Pit. I can’t wait for Dany to go into full badass mode ( that’s who she is…a Targaryen, Fire&Blood) on them.

  52. mau,

It can be 8 and it can be a fire and blood episode to contrast with S5e8. I suppose that Sapochnic will film Dany’s return to Westeros later this year.

  53. I can see Sansa’s story for this upcoming season being smaller than last one, I have a feeling she’s going to spend much of it under guard. She maybe a Stark, but she was married to a Lannister and Bolton, and once the Umber’s have her, they’re going to be very cautious concerning her loyalties. Furthermore Rickon probably will be dubious of her too, he was becoming pretty bitter toward the end of his last appearance, with everyone leaving him.

  54. I feel like most of Sophie’s scenes will be interior scenes anyway, not dissimilar from Season 5 and they may stretch those 2-3 minute scenes over the course of 10 eps. I presume her filming time in December will be one of the last right?

Sansa featured in 8/9 eps of S5 right? I don’t see her being in that many this season, but I also believe she’ll figure in a big way. She is one of the main characters not a tertiary character.

I’m surprised Sam’s getting a lot of playtime this season, I do hope it’s engaging enough, we are literally in the final stretch, hope all the pieces are lined up this season devoid of fluff.

  55. mau,

I just don’t see then fitting in the battle of the north and mereen in the last half of the season unless they do some impressive groundwork laying.

  56. Sansa’s appearances

    S1 – 9 episodes
    S2 – 7 episodes
    S3 – 8 episodes
    S4 – 7 episodes
    S5 – 9 episodes

So, I expect at least 7 episodes for her in S6. Maybe 6 episodes.

  57. mau,

True…ish…I meant more like battle battle. Like black waterbay/attack on the wall I don’t see two that level in the same season. But I feel this season has the battle of the north for sure, I think a lot of set up for an early battle of fire in s7 but maybe ur right they do both this year I won’t complain.

  58. DW3sty,

The producers have repeatedly said they don’t want to spend too much time stuck in Meereen. One time they said “two seasons”, if I recall correctly. Half of season four, all of season five, half of season six, maybe a tad more —That sounds about right to me.

  59. DW3sty:
    mau,

No way they will drag Meereen to S7.

D&D said there will be 3 seasons in Meereen, so S6 is the last.

  60. Well ignore what I said then lol maybe they don’t even do a battle and Dani comes back and just leaves. I’m glad to hear mereen won’t drag out.

  61. I certainly hope they won’t drag out Meereen for another season. It’s high time for Dany to pack up and hit the road. Season 6 should tie up loose ends in Essos, then finally send Dany across the Narrow Sea where she’ll hopefully arrive in Westeros by the season finale at the absolute latest.

  62. mau,

Didn’t they actually say “we don’t wanna spend three seasons in Meereen”, as if that was an absurd extreme? I don’t see the show wrapping up Meereen until the mid-season or maybe a bit later, but still… I’d be very surprised if we haven’t completely left Meereen behind by the climactic last three episodes, in which I expect Dany to either arrive at Westeros or be to about to do so.

  63. mau,

I agree but I figured with the iron born being heavily involved this season there would be a battle, maybe minor or more off screen so they don’t blow the budget. Someone commented earlier about her returning at the peak of the battle ala the Rohirim in LotR, I could see that, then as they arrive blow their horns cut to a smoke filled dead/charred yunki littered field

  64. Luka Nieto,

I think her leaving for Westeros is probably the most likely spot for Season 6 to end on with her (absent some other sort of cliffhanger that we don’t yet have the information to predict).

  65. Right after The Gift episode they said “We’re not going to spend four seasons in Meereen”. That was like 4 months ago, when they probably had the scripts for season 6 basically finished. I doubt they’d change it . The battle in Meereen is probably happening around episodes 8, 9. Dany might leave Meereen heading to Westeros in Episode 10.

  66. Karolyne,

I doubt they’ll bunch the climactic Northern battle that’s been leaked with a Battle in Meereen in the same bunch of episodes.

This is assuming there will be a Battle of Fire in the show, of course. I’m sure there will be an explosive climax, and maybe even a battle, but it could all be in the context of the Meereenese civil war between the Sons of the Harpy and the Unsullied (to be saved by Daenerys and her new Dothraki, maybe?). Or maybe they didn’t want to set up the battle with Yunkai at all until the season in which it was going to actually happen. That would make sense too. We just can’t know, until we see any evidence of the Yunkai’i.

  67. mau:
    Sansa’s appearances

    S1 – 9 episodes
    S2 – 7 episodes
    S3 – 8 episodes
    S4 – 7 episodes
    S5 – 9 episodes

So, I expect at least 7 episodes for her in S6. Maybe 6 episodes.

You might expect that, but if this blogger is on the level, it sounds like there’s no way you’re going to get that. She wasn’t filming much in August, either.

  68. Tyrion Pimpslap:
    High Sparrow,

I think it’s a good bet that he will be a part of TOJ filming. I just can’t place him as one of the characters. Perhaps with a wig and some makeup he could pass for Dayne. He will need to look more rugged than the photos I have seen of him.

I totally imagined Dayne older and more rugged. This guy looks more like Young Griff to me.

  69. 1000 extras it sounds a big number for me and having registered the Meereenese chaos spectacularly in the last season I do not expect to reduce it to Whispering Woods proportions in S6. In any case there are two imprisoned dragons ready to unleash even more wrath and vengeance. I think it is going to be epic…

  70. Sean C.:
    Luka Nieto,

I think her leaving for Westeros is probably the most likely spot for Season 6 to end on with her (absent some other sort of cliffhanger that we don’t yet have the information to predict).

I think we can piece together what Team Dany’s arc will look like in Season 6 already:

-Drogon doesn’t fly to Dany’s rescue, at least not at first
-Dany gets taken to Vaes Dothrak, Dothraki aren’t having any of her shit
-Dany reconnects with the Dothraki, is befriended by the young widow cast a while ago
-Dany wins over the Dothraki on her own–at which point Drogon returns to her in some sort of metaphor–and heads back triumphantly to Meereen at the head of a Dothraki army
-Tyrion, Grey Worm and Missandei try to hold it together in Meereen with the aid of the Red Priestess but the situation deteriorates until there’s a big battle with soldiers, slaves, Unsullied, etc.
-Dany rides in with the Dothraki to save the day
-someone on Team Dany dies at some point to Raise The Stakes (Daario, probably)
-Team Dany sets out for Westeros in 6×10, FINALLY
    -end season

  71. We had a battle in the North in episode 9 of season 4, another -epic- one in episode 8 of season 5… I want to see a battle in Essos this time… Of course the best would be both. But I’d rather watch something in Meereen this time. If we can get both, awesome lol

  72. M,

Pretty much agree with that. I think I’d only add that when she’s in Vaes Dothraki the dosh khaleen will have some kind of prophecy about her – for those who read the books, one of the house of the undying visions suggest that at some point – sorry I’m new here and haven’t figure out how to “hide” spoilers. Think I didn’t say much though.

  73. M,

She was in Belfast for a pretty decent stretch in July/early August (which also covered preproduction), plus two other visits since (one fairly brief). We have no idea what kind of scenes she has, of course, other than the day she was seen filming at Winterfell, but like I said, if it’s primarily interior scenes with dialogue, those don’t take a huge amount of time. And we don’t know how much filming she’ll end up doing in December.

For example, that Lord Karstark was sought for filming for 20 days for three episodes, and I would guess that one of those episodes is episode 9, which probably accounts for a big chunk of those days. The things that take a long time to film typically involve large numbers of extras, complicated fight choreography, etc.

  74. Hey guys, question. Is the dog from the avatar on Sophie’s twitter the one that she adopted after S1 shooting was over? the one who play Lady. Or is it a new dog?

  75. If that is the Dothraki Sea then it looks a bit “dry”… unless they are going for Lhazar or the Lhazar/Red Waste border or the Lands of the Long Summer, then it looks just fine.

  76. Karolyne: Dany might leave Meereen heading to Westeros in Episode 10.

Hopefully she will be leaving Essos for Westeros around then! Ideally, I’d like to see this season see her marshal the troops in Meereen, and then move westward across Essos. I suspect that a few of the things that happen along the way will wind up being important, particular regarding the Red Church and possibly former slaves swelling her armies.

Geralt of Rivia: Not everything needs to be parallel between Jon and Daenerys.

Not everything, no, but the parallels are important. For one thing, much of a story comes from parallels between protagonists anyways. For another, Jon and Daeny are Protagonist 1 and Protagonist A in the series. Ultimately, these two will contribute more to the over-arching story than will any other two characters combined. Whatever the “crux” of it all is, parallels between how Jon and Daeny evolve over the series will mean the most!

  77. mau:
    M,

Being declared Queen Regent in the North in episode 10 would make amazing year for Sansa, even with less screentime.

That’s one of my dream climaxes for the season: The Northerners chasing out the Boltons, reclaiming their land, and all bending the knee to Sansa with swords raised in the air and declaring her The Queen of the North.

Of course, Rickon being back might make that unlikely.

  78. Daenerys shouldn’t arrive in stinky KL, Westeros, until darling Cersei has burned it to the ground. I hope she arrives in Dorne first, and at the earliest in mid-season 7.

Geralt of Rivia: I hope you read whole comment and not just that. It’s not like I’m hating on them or eventual romance (I just hope no Jon/Daeny – King/Queen ending) , you know.

I read your comment. The things with comments: we are all speculating. I doubt anyone is more correct than anyone else, at this point. I am against any sort of Jon-Daenerys romance. I mean: how? Why on earth? The more seasons go, the more strongly I feel about it. They have nothing in common. I think Jon will settle down with either some Wilding girl, or perhaps somebody from the North. As for Daenerys, if Daario dies, then I have no idea who; perhaps we have yet to meet the guy. Also, somewhere in Essos.

    Karolyne:
I want to see a battle in Essos this time…

I think we will get some kind of big battle in Meereen, perhaps early-to-mid-season. It’s a powder keg, the fuse needs to be lit. But soon. Like around Ep. 4/5. But preferably not a Cogman episode.

  79. Wow 😀 , everyone here is expect Dany to cross the NS and arrives to Westros !
I don’t know but I don’t think that will happen :/ , I think she’ll spend alot of time at Vaes Dothrak trying to get the Dothrakis on her side , and she’ll convince them by Drogon like “look people! , I’ve a Dragon! ” and she will order him to fly or to burn something but he won’t obey her because come on ! , he didn’t get any kind of training and that’s her biggest mistake ! , and she’ll fail and they’ll kill her OR ***Maybe Spoilers*** Drogon will , Yeah ! , she can burn to death just like anyone , it’s known ! , ALL the Targs can burn to death and ALL the Starks can freeze to death , but -unlike the other families- they have a little immune against fire/cold , means they don’t die quickly because of them ! ***The End of Spoilers*** , it’ll be great if she dies because of her first mistake -Arrogance- , the arrogance that make her believe she’s a Mother and the Dragons are her children and -like any children in the world- they’ll obey their mother , Why ? because she’s a Targ and the Dragons on their flags , I mean look at the Stark kids ! , they’re KIDS and they trained their wolves by themselves ! , I don’t think GRRM miss something important like that.

On a somewhat related topic, do we have any info on filming dates in Northern Ireland in November? I might have an opportunity to visit 13-21st of that month for work and could do some recon but for all I know they could have wrapped up the outdoor shooting by then. In which case I’ll just have to actually attend my stupid conference 🙁

  81. M,
Bran will be shooting soon – there was a casting call for a Child of the Forest(-looking) type for shooting between Oct. 14th and Dec. 7th (that’s a lot!). They will probably shoot Bran first, and then Sophie.

    iridium,
Once again – these will be probably Bran shots. But in general, locations in NI seem to be less defined than in Spain, it seems.

Man, having a reference really helps.

  82. Kay,

Romance/love is on of the themes. It’s a huge part of it and it’s just so tasty for D&D to make it happen and I thought everything is going to exactly that. A lot of people are very much happy with this potential love angle. Kit/Emilia being the two actors playing them really helps, with their friendly relationship, and really good chemistry off screen in interviews. Something new Daario just lacks with Dany. Michiel is a better actor than Ed Skrein, but their chemistry is just lacking something imho.

Maybe I’m all wrong. I just can’t see Jon and Daeny fighting each other and especially with WW being threat to them all, and not to mention their more than likely family connection. Only other option is really romance, as Kit put it together “fight or fuck”. YG was cut, so Dany might just be happy to learn, she is actually not alone in this world. I can see her being really cautious of him, after dealing with one pretender in form of YG.

For some reason, I thought you’re pro Jon/Dany. I can see how it could work, because they share very similiar experiences throught their lives and kinda balance each other in a way. I was strictly against it, but kinda warmed to this idea. Right now it seems like a bad idea to some people, but as the times goes might be ideal solution. I’m only against them on the IT or marriage. It¨s not like it would have been a bad ending or something, but I just can’t picture them there or married. Tragic love ala Rhaegar/Lyanna, but this time Daeny would steal Jon.

  83. Considering the amount of time the Bran storyline will take to shoot, I wonder if the white walker action we have been promised will include Bran and the CotF

  84. Charles Dance shot all his scenes in S2 in two weeks (and he appeared in 7 episodes).
Lena shot her S3 scenes in three weeks (and she appeared in 8 episodes).
For all we know Sophie could be shooting for 2 or 3 straight weeks in December.

Btw, do we know if they’re shooting with three units now? Since one unit is filming the Battle Sept/Oct, and the other is shooting in Spain, it seems odd that the studios are empty and none of the other actors are shooting for now.

  85. Wimsey: Ideally, I’d like to see this season see her marshal the troops in Meereen, and then move westward across Essos. I suspect that a few of the things that happen along the way will wind up being important, particular regarding the Red Church and possibly former slaves swelling her armies.

That. The setup in ADWD was more than enough —the Volantene slaves being encouraged by the Red Priests to revolt against their Masters; Moqorro being sent to Meereen… Then there’s the fact that Volantis was featured in Season 5, which let’s just admit wasn’t neccessary for that season alone, however cool it was. The exposition in those scenes was focused on two things: the slaves, as detailed by Varys; and the Red Priestess supporting Daenerys as the slaves’ prophesized savior. Considering how little time they’ve got for exposition in such a packed show, that’s got to mean something.

And we pretty much know it will! The show’s version of Benerro, the High Priest of Volantis, is being cast —Kinvara. The character is being combined with Moqorro, who in the books is sent by Benerro to Meereen. In the show, the High Priestess goes in person. In the leaked audition, Tyrion and Varys come to an agreement with Kinvara to pacify the masses with the Red God’s religion. It seems like an “early in the season” kind of scene. In other words, I’m pretty sure Dany’s plot for the season will be “RECRUITMENT TIME!”. First the Dothraki, which she will accomplish by herself; and then the freedmen and their new Red God, thanks to Tyrion and Kinvara in Meereen, and probably by herself (well, and an army of Unsullied and Dothraki) in Volantis.

I wouldn’t be surprised if the season ends in Volantis, with the city freed from the Masters, and Daenerys preparing to embark on the Volantene ships towards Westeros with an army of Unsullied, Dothtraki, and freedmen. Where will she go, though? Dorne or King’s Landing? That depends on whether the show’s Doran has Targaryen ambitions, and whether he has managed to communicate them to Daenerys by the end of the season. It also depends on whether the King’s Landing plot is pretty much “done” by then and Cersei has (as I suspect, anyway) burnt the city down.

  86. For everyone saying Eyre is playing the Faith’s champion, he’s not.

The Champion of Faith is played by Rory McCann.

    GET HYPE.

  87. mau,

Didn’t GRRM or Elio&Linda say that some pretty interesting stuff is going on in the Vale in TWOW? That means Sansa has good material, but all the Vale was cut in the show, so I guess whatever she would do there, will end up putting her in the position she’ll be in season 6.

  88. Kay: Daenerys shouldn’t arrive in stinky KL, Westeros, until darling Cersei has burned it to the ground. I hope she arrives in Dorne first, and at the earliest in mid-season 7.

There still are two huge plot threads that need to be resolved: the war for the Iron Throne, and the war for dusk or dawn or whatever they are calling Ragnarok. They almost certainly have to tie up the former completely by the end of Season 7 to concentrate on Armageddon. And Daeny really needs to be back in Westeros long before the middle of Season 7, I suspect. If nothing else, she needs to be back in time for Cersei to realize that the answer to her childhood prophecy was in front of her all the while, but that her unthinking obsessions with Margaery blinded her to the obvious conclusion.

  90. lalla,

Supposedly, E&L’s idea of “interesting” and “controversial” concern matters of “shipping” rather than issues of substance to story or plot. At least it has been alleged that their warning that there would be “controversial” material in early Sansa chapters does not refer to anything that would cause an actual controversy, but stuff that contradicts a silly idea that Sansa is in love with the Hound or some such childish stuff. The fact that B&W seem to be cutting Sansa’s Vale plot and transferring her story elsewhere suggests that it’s not actually important to the story or the over-arching plot.

  91. lalla,

They said that based on Alayne I, which we’ve already read. As for the “controversial” statement, also based on that chapter, they clarified they were talking about Sansa acting all flirtatious and manipulative with Harry the Heir.

  92. Luka Nieto:

I know the “controversial” comment (and how it was exaggerated by the fandom) was about the first chapter, I didn’t get also the “interesting stuff” was referringo to it too.

    Wimsey,
What is important to the over-arching plot? Just a few plot points. All the rest is character developement. Cutting that and leaving only the plot points, would make for a very short (and bad) show.

  93. Sophie c,

Sarcasm? Yea, we’ve mastered it on our side of the pond too. Why anyone would think he’s being serious in his tweet about the “tough week filming” speaks to the fact that either a) English is their second language or b) They are autistic.

  94. TormundsWoman:
    Ella,
I had the same wild guess and I did the same. Read his tweets and went and watched his Achilles look: https://twitter.com/jeremybrookltd/status/633318276647505920
    I’m sold.

    Hi TW *waves*
His eyes are blue enough in that picture for him to be a white walker, albeit one who’s really good at sword fighting’n’stuff. Maybe the Night’s King saw Jon in action at HH and thought “time to send in the heavyweights, just being able to raise the dead isn’t enough any more” 😉

  95. Lulus Mum,

Hiya back, Lulu’s Mom 🙂 Long time, no read…

Yes, those are pretty blue eyes perfect for an Other to keep the Night’s King company, but this guy is filming in a 29 deg C weather. How far do you think the WW will advance this season? :p

  96. Gelmir:
It’s curious that Emilia chose that perspective for the photo (hint: look around):

    https://www.google.es/maps/@42.4818206,-1.6486917,3a,75y,51.44h,94.03t/data=!3m6!1e1!3m4!1s7X4nEc_XWQ2Ou9utzvWsKg!2e0!7i13312!8i6656!6m1!1e1

Are they using Olite’s palace for something? I didn’t think so.

OMG! How sneaky, sneaky of Emilia! That structure, Olite’s palace?, she’s facing has to feature in filming – otherwise it’s too coincidental!

Luka Nieto: I wouldn’t be surprised if the season ends in Volantis, with the city freed from the Masters, and Daenerys preparing to embark on the Volantene ships towards Westeros with an army of Unsullied, Dothtraki, and freedmen.

Yes, I too think she ends up in Volantis at the end of the season in something climactic. I don’t think the season ends with her preparing to do something like sailing, but rather having done something like completely liberate Volantis. That’s why I feel the preparations for going to Westeros will come in early S7, and she may be in Westeros by mid-season 7. The moment they announced S8, I felt that she wouldn’t be in Westeros or on ships to Westeros by the end of S6, but the free cities would be addressed. Volantis was well set-up in S5.
