WotW Awards Season 6: Best Supporting Actor – Preliminary Round

season6 awards

We’re off and running with our Watchers on the Wall Awards preliminary rounds, and thousands of votes have been cast already. The polls for Best Guest Actor, Guest Actress, and Supporting Actress are still open (visit here and here to make your voices heard!) and we can’t wait to see who takes home the prizes this year. Today, we’re opening up another category for voting: Best Supporting Actor, and this being Game of Thrones, we are spoiled for choice.

But first: as with the Best Actress category, our Best Actor category is a narrow field, narrow enough that we don’t need to have a prelim round poll. Based on the initial submissions, we can go ahead send these five men right to the finals for Best Actor:

Nikolaj Coster-Waldau
Peter Dinklage
Kit Harington
Isaac Hempstead Wright
Iwan Rheon

Now it’s time to start choosing your five favorites for Best Supporting Actor!

The standard rules: Select up to FIVE nominees from the poll. You can choose fewer if you like, but you cannot choose more than 5.

At the end of 72 hours (Saturday  8/27/16 at 5PM EDT), whichever five actors have the most votes will continue on to the finals. The results of the poll will be revealed when it’s time to choose the final winner of Best Supporting Actor in a couple weeks.

  1. How on earth can Iwan Rheon be in the cast as main actor? I don’t get that at all. Best supporting actor I could see him nominated as but main??

  2. Hodor?

    Edit: Darn, so close.
As for who’s main and who’s supporting, I guess it depends on the criteria. In terms of screen time, he was pretty major, whereas for the story as a whole he is of not quite main importance.

  3. You should engrave Greatjon of Slumber’s name on the walls of the WotW Great Room! Not just for helping you with these polls but because his name is such an imaginative one!!

  4. I was surprised by Iwan as well. He really didn’t have too much screen time this season, or at least it didn’t feel like much more than Alfie and/or Davos.

Lol’ing that the king can’t even make it past supporting actor, though I of course agree with the decision.

Regardless, great pool of candidates all around. My top pick would be for Theon/Alfie, followed by Davos/Liam.

There aren’t enough male main actors, only the first three are the other two is the site’s choice. I guess Bran is important as a character and Ramsay had enough screen time.

  6. Didn’t the High Sparrow have as much screen time as Ramsay this year? The difference between these two categories feels more Oscars than Emmys.

  7. Alfie Allen
    Kristian Nairn
    Anton Lesser
    Rory McCann
    Liam Cunningham

holy BALLS – A very difficult choice to whittle it down to 5.

  8. Alfie Allen
    Liam Cunningham
    Iain Glen
    Owen Teale
    Jonathan Pryce

    This was really really hard.

  9. There are many deserving of nomination for Best Supporting Actor, but I’m going to spend most of my post arguing for why Dean-Charles Chapman should be one of the final five. I didn’t see him mentioned much in the nominations thread, which is too bad. Tommen is not a very flashy character; no monologues or jokes, and you don’t love to love him or love to hate him really. However, I found him to be a compelling and pivotal character this year, and I found Chapman’s performance of him one of the more impressive performances of the season. Whether the twists and turns of the King’s Landing plot this year would even make sense depended on us buying Tommen’s motivations, which Chapman sold well, despite the difficulty. He had to show a willingness to confront the High Sparrow, yet also a weakness for his manipulations. He had to show a love for his mother, yet also a willingness to take away her best hope at surviving the trial. Tommen’s character arc also ends tragically, providing the emotional gut punch of the finale. Chapman’s performance was key to the plot and emotional resonance of the King’s Landing storyline this year, and he hit it out of the park, holding his own with some of the best actors on the show (Lena Heady, Natalie Dormer, and Jonathan Pryce). Tommen’s character was more mentally and emotionally complex a role than a character like, say, Tormund, making the acting more difficult and therefore Chapman’s accomplishment more noteworthy. I might not vote for him in the final round even if he makes it that far, but given the difficulty and complexity of the role, Chapman is an easy pick for me to go on to the next round of voting.

The rest of my picks are more conventional. Liam Cunningham, Alfie Allen, Jonathan Pryce, and Kristian Nairn round out my list of five nominees. I don’t think I need to explain those choices, and I am fairly confident I will have the opportunity to discuss those choices in the next round.

  10. Jonothan Pryce hands down. The scene where he described his epiphany was gold. You can see him reliving the experience, seeing the orgiastic entwining, smelling the smells, feeling the disgust. He showed us fanaticism aborning and made us (me anyway) believe in the character. That was Acting.

  11. Like others, I’m puzzled by the inclusion of Iwan in the lead category. Even the High Sparrow had more screen time. I think the list should have stayed with 4 actors.

Anyway, I voted for Tormund, Roose, Davos and Fedorah Mormont.

  12. I’m trying very hard not to transform this category into “my favourite actors” and/ or “my favourite characters”, that is I keep reminding myself that I should vote for the 5 best performances this season – still subjective, unfortunately! So, even if I love Liam Cunningham, Conleth Hill, Jerome Flynn, Michael McElhatton and Iain Glen, I didn’t vote for any of them. I chose Alfie Allen (I’m sure everybody understands why), Owen Teale as the most dignified villain, Jonathan Pryce as the master manipulator, Kristofer Hivju, who provided the funniest moments, while still being true to his fierce character and Rory McCann for being the houndest Hound ever while seeming tamed and for the pure joy he brought me with his comeback.

  13. Rhaenys Stark:
    Alfie Allen
    Liam Cunningham
    Iain Glen
    Owen Teale
    Jonathan Pryce

    This was really really hard.

I picked the same, except for Hivju instead of Glenn. But I could have happily gone for 10 or even 15. This has definitely been the toughest field to whittle down, so far.

  14. Tom Wlaschiha as Jaqen H’ghar
Rory McCann as Sandor “The Hound” Clegane
    Iain Glen as Jorah Mormont
    Jerome Flynn as Bronn
    Owen Teale as Alliser Thorne

  15. God this was hard but I went with Liam,Alfie Jonathan Pryce,Rory and Kristofer.I don’t even know why really lol it could as easily been the other ones.I’m rooting for Liam though

  16. Screentime is almost never the deciding factor in who is Lead or not, and it shouldn’t be. Rheon makes sense as a Lead this year. In the first four episodes, he didn’t share a scene with any characters who were more “Leading” than he was. The murder of his father, in fact, was the payoff to a storyline in which he was the central character.

The extra slot in the Lead categories always goes to someone who could conceivably be in the supporting category. The staff has the tough job of balancing screentime, prominence within storyline, and prominence of the storyline itself to pick the right guy. Others, like Pryce or Cunningham, maybe had more screentime than Rheon, but they almost always shared a scene with a more central character, and their actions always in the service of a more main character’s storyline. That makes Rheon a stronger choice for Lead, imo.

The only other person who I think might be a better choice for Lead this year than Rheon was Alfie Allen. He was in (barely) more episodes (although probably had similar screentime), and he was clearly the most main character in the Iron Islands storyline. But since said storyline was not a very prominent one, then that is not a clear choice either. Rheon as lead makes a lot of sense to me.

  17. Wowzers. That was the hardest list yet to cut down. And so many on the list that I hadn’t considered when making my initial nominations too!! Although I cut my nominations down to five, there were so many worthy of recognition. In the end I went for the following:

Alfie Allen – Never in any episode of Thrones have I seen him give a bad performance. It beggars belief that he is so rarely nominated for awards outside of sites like this. I can’t imagine anyone else playing this part and I cannot say enough nice things about Alfie’s performance. As Theon this season, he showed off his range in his scenes with Sansa and Yara, and I loved the contrast between his season one meeting with Tyrion and their season six encounter; both actors were on point. He truly encapsulates the inner turmoil of Theon’s soul.

Liam Cunningham – I loved the relationship that was built up this season between Jon and Davos, and both actors fed off each other so well that it seemed as if they had known each other and worked together for years. Liam is always amazing, and I love his interpretation of Davos. Liam’s performance cut me to bits in the scene where Davos confronts Melisandre in episode ten, and I ended up mentally and emotionally re-living Shireen’s burning. Supporting actor describes Davos’s role so well; and the scenes post-resurrection were stunning also.

Kristopher Hivju – If there was ever an actor born to play a wildling, it was him. He completely embodies the role of Tormund Giantsbane and I have loved watching, over the course of the last few seasons (particularly through the Watchers on the Wall – Hardhome – Battle of the Bastards sequences) the evolution of Jon and Tormund’s relationship from foes to staunch allies. Tormund can be fearsome and gentle, a leader and a follower – and so much of that is down to this amazing performance. I also loved what he and Gwendoline were able to create with just a few looks.

Rory McCann – When I heard which character Ian McShane was playing, my first instinct was excitement that Sandor Clegane was coming back! I have always loved Rory’s performance, and season six was no exception. He has always managed to mix Sandor’s ferocity with his insecurities and his toughness with his protectiveness, and he really took it to another level this season. Sandor was back, but there was a change in him. He is in a place where he wants to do some sort of good; when Arya left him, he wanted to die, and now he has reached a mental and emotional place where he wants to live again. And Rory carried that off stunningly. I cannot wait to see more of him in season seven, and hope that we see Sandor reunite with BOTH Stark girls.

Kristian Nairn – For someone who only ever has one line, it takes a great deal of ability to deliver a performance where each recitation of a single word has a specific resonance to that scene. Kristian has always given a great performance, and in season six that was turned up to eleven. I was in bits on my floor watching the Hold the Door sequence, and so much of that was down to his ability to make me care so much about this character that has seemingly communicated so little. I am one of those who remain traumatized by a request to ‘Hold the Door’, and much of it is down to this man’s acting abilities.

Also: honorable mentions to both John Bradley and Ben Crompton. Both have always given great performances, and if it was a final seven we were looking for, they would totally make my list. John’s performance in the Horn Hill scenes was some of the best acting I have seen from him on Thrones; I think sometimes we forget how far Sam has come since season one, and in an instant his performance led us into Sam’s inner self as the work of Aemon, Jon, Edd, Gilly and others to improve his confidence evaporated in an instant as he sat at his father’s dinner table. Edd is one of my favorite characters in both the book and the show, and I adore Ben’s performance. He had much more to do this season, and I loved his reactions to Tormund’s attraction to Brienne and Sansa’s declaration that she had the Stark name – also the moment he realizes that he is now Lord Commander.

That was horrific! I really don’t know how I am going to pick just one of these five when it comes down to the final vote!!!

  18. Liam – his tearful anger towards Mel and his speech to Lyanna Mormont take the cake, for me;

Emotional runners-up – Kristofer and Kristian, who were just amazeballs

  19. Bloody HELL there are way too many standouts. Unhappily, I could only pick 5:

    Rory McCann
    Iain Glen
    Tom Wlaschiha
    Liam Cunningham

and Alfie Allen, who I want to win. He’s not my favourite character (that’d be the first 4), but dammit if Alfie hasn’t turned Theon from a character I hated to one I am rooting for. Brilliant.

Honestly, the entire list is fabulous. My finger lingered over Dean-Charles for a good while. And it’s hard to not vote for those who won’t return.

  20. Iwan Rheon deserves to be on the Best Actor list as much as any of the others this year. He and Kit will be a tough choice for me. I’m continually surprised by how underrated Iwan is, he’s phenomenal. Of course, having seen his previous work has given me a bigger appreciation of just how well in contrast he can play evil, perhaps.

  21. Alfie Allen as Theon Greyjoy
    John Bradley as Samwell Tarly
    Liam Cunningham as Davos Seaworth
    Kristofer Hivju as Tormund Giantsbane
Rory McCann as Sandor “The Hound” Clegane

  22. I went with Alfie, Rory, and Kristopher. And I hope Alfie wins. He effing deserves it. He’s never failed to impress me – even without lines.

  23. Dean-Charles Chapman
    Anton Lesser
    Kristofer Hivju
    Rory McCann (Runner Up)
    Jonathan Pryce (Winner)

  24. Wooow, that was a hard one !

I’m so sorry John (Bradley), but I figure quite a lot of people will end up voting for you, so I had to pick my five other favourites :

    Ben as Edd.
    Anton as Qyburn.
    Kristofer as Tormund.

And of course, the two I will have a hard time as hell to chose one when the time comes :

    Alfie and Theon.
    Liam as Davos.

  25. Liam Cunningham as Davos Seaworth
    Conleth Hill as Varys
    Kristofer Hivju as Tormund Giantsbane
Rory McCann as Sandor “The Hound” Clegane
Owen Teale as Alliser Thorne Winner

  26. Voted for:
    -Alfie Allen (Theon Greyjoy)
    -Jonathan Pryce (High Sparrow)
    -Kristian Nairn (Hodor)
    -Anton Lesser (Qyburn)
    -Aidan Gillen (Petyr “Littlefinger” Baelish)

Honorable Mentions: Owen Teale (Alliser Thorne–really wanted to vote for him, and almost did!), Conleth Hill (Varys), Rory McCann (Sandor “The Hound” Clegane)

  27. Alba Stark,

Agreed on Nairn. Hodor’s limited vocabulary makes his job harder, not easier. He’s always been solid but this year I felt every “Hodor” and every facial expression really communicated something. Very impressive performance.

  28. Oops, I wrote a passionate recognition for Anton Qyburn Lesser editing my post above, but it got lost as I passed the time-allowed-to-edit deadline…

So I’ll sum it up briefly :
Let us not forget him !
His voice is on par with Charles, Michael and Iain, he can play the creepy side of Qyburn amazingly, there’s always that hunger in his eyes (be it for research, ambition or recognition) and he can be funny as hell with no words : his facial expressions are wonderful, he can play cynism, detachment, annoyance or cold amusement like no other !
Anton frigging Lesser was definitly my third choice after Liam and Alfie !

  29. Hodor Targaryen:
    Alba Stark,

Agreed on Nairn. Hodor’s limited vocabulary makes his job harder, not easier. He’s always been solid but this year I felt every “Hodor” and every facial expression really communicated something. Very impressive performance.

I have to say, I was going through the list, and picked Alfie Allen, Liam Cunningham, Kristopher Hivju and Rory McCann, leaving me caught between Kristian Nairn, John Bradly and Ben Crompton. Ultimately I picked Kristian for a variety of reasons, partly because – as has been stated above – it is hard to move past those who have been culled this season, and partly because the dialogue he is given by the writers is limited (given the nature of the character, not D&D’s work) and as a result so much falls back on his performance.

  30. Liam Cunningham as Davos Seaworth
Jonathan Pryce as the High Sparrow
    Alfie Allen as Theon Greyjoy
    Kristofer Hivju as Tormund Giantsbane
    Kristian Nairn as Hodor

Toughest Omissions: Rory McCann, Dean-Charles Chapman, John Bradley, Owen Teale, Anton Lesser

Also Considered: Tom Wlaschiha, Conleth Hill, Michael McElhatton, Iain Glen, Aidan Gillen, Eugene Simon, Ben Crompton …

  31. Jared:
    Liam Cunningham as Davos Seaworth
Jonathan Pryce as the High Sparrow
    Alfie Allen as Theon Greyjoy
    Kristofer Hivju as Tormund Giantsbane
    Kristian Nairn as Hodor

Toughest Omissions: Rory McCann, Dean-Charles Chapman, John Bradley, Owen Teale, Anton Lesser

Also Considered: Tom Wlaschiha, Conleth Hill, Michael McElhatton, Iain Glen, Aidan Gillen, Eugene Simon, Ben Crompton …

Those were my picks as well. I could have picked a lot more….

  32. This is an embarrassment of riches! So many of these men wont be back next year! That finale really cleaned house!

  33. Singedbylife:
How on earth can Iwan Rheon be in the cast as main actor? I don’t get that at all. Best supporting actor I could see him nominated as but main??

He was a main antagonist and his arc was pretty huge this season. He may have had more lines than a lot of the usual “lead” guys this year.

  34. It is so hard to separate the actor from the character, and the performance from the writing. I will make a case for the range that Conleth Hill brought to Varys this season should make him a strong front-runner. He was funny (telling Tyrion “she thinks you want to eat her baby”), vaguely threatening and manipulative with the woman who assisted the Sons of the Harpy, knocked backwards and confused with Kinvara (sp?), and stone cold when meeting with the Queen of Thorns and Queen Sandsnake with just three words — “fire and blood”. An amazing season for a great actor.

  35. I went with Alfie Allen, Liam Cunnigham, Jonathan Pryce and Kristian Nairn, for reasons I believe everyone would understand.
I also picked Finn Jones because I think he portrayed really well a fallen knight. His final scene where he is confessing is really sad and only made ten times worse what happened later.

  36. This is impossible to do, so many great actors it’s hard for me to even differentiate. Even still I think Iain Glenn might stand above them all.

  37. Alba Stark,

The only reason why Kristian got this role was his physical appearance. He had very little to do and I never saw anything more in his performance than a plain delivery of a word and some expressions of physical fatigue or anxiety. There are plenty more competent actors in this category. There is no reason to exaggerate Kristian’s performance just because the Hodor scene was so awesome. Anyway my picks are
    1 Jonathan Pryce
    2 Iain Glenn
    3 Anton Lesser
    4 Finn Jones
    5 Liam Cunningham

  38. Gah!! This was hard! Liam is my absolute number one here. He absolutely killed it this year! After that, I had to go with John Bradley (Sam seeing the library; shrinking slowly under his father’s browbeating); Iain Glen (his face in that scene when Dany sends him away); Rory McCann (he IS the Hound!); and surprisingly, Aidan Gillen (the mustache-twirling seems to be gone and he’s adding a little vulnerability into his Littlefinger).
    Cheers, All!

  39. I chose Alfie Allen, Liam Cunningham, Johnathan Price, Owen Teele (I know he had little time, but his final speech stuck with me) and Conleth Hill.

  40. Donna:
You should engrave Greatjon of Slumber’s name on the walls of the WotW Great Room! Not just for helping you with these polls but because his name is such an imaginative one!!

    Thanks!

    Singedbylife:
How on earth can Iwan Rheon be in the cast as main actor? I don’t get that at all. Best supporting actor I could see him nominated as but main??

It was decided, essentially – especially because there were several who voted for him in this category – that Iwan Rheon carried his own storyline; he mostly interacts with characters much less important than he, and therefore it was deserving to have him in this category. Pryce didn’t get anywhere near the level of support for the lead category that Rheon did.

  41. I’ve never participated in this before (I guess I missed the best actor thread). This is fun.

    My 5 picks:
    Alfie Allen
    Liam Cunningham
    Rory McCann
    Michael McElhatton
    Jonathan Pryce

  42. So I went with some variety this time through — as great as Alfie Allen and Jonathan Pryce are, they’re past winners (if we reach back to the old site, that is), and felt like recognizing some I find more deserving.

I have to start with Kristian Nairn for the most devastating death in the history of this show (and that’s really saying something).

I agree with the sentiments expressed above by many for Dean Charles-Chapman, who really made the sensitive Tommen a highlight this year. He was an underrated part of the show, but a real testament to the smarts of Nina Gold and the producers in casting him initially and then for re-casting him as Tommen; he was a nice asset in the last two seasons, but then really came into his own this year. Bravo.

I of course have to give some props to my man Kristofer Hivju, because he handles the physicality that comes with being Tormund Giantsbane in a way that’s more effective than most other characters. And the way the friendship between he and Jon has developed over time makes it one of the most enjoyable relationships on the show.

And then there’s Anton Lesser, who makes the weird, mercurial Qyburn a highlight anytime he’s onscreen.

The winner, for me, is going to probably end up being Liam Cunningham; this was probably the strongest year for Davos, with his usual steadiness and calm demeanor in dealing with Jon, Sansa and Lyanna Mormont – but also the anger he’s allowed to flash after he realizes the fate of his beloved Shireen. He was great this year.

Honorable Mentions: Rory McCann, of course; Jonathan Pryce; Eugene Simon, Julian Glover, Conleth Hill, Jacob Anderson, John Bradley, and Iain Glen.

  43. dothrakian raven,

F*cking thank you for stating that because I was just about to make a similar statement lol! To each their own but the over doing it does get a little hard to take after awhile.

My picks were Liam, Owen, Alfie, Pryce

  44. Toughest category by far as of yet. I would’ve chosen at least 10 actors instead of 5, if I could have, but well, here are my nominees:

    5. Liam Cunningham
    4. Kristofer Hivju
    3. Iain Glen
    2. Alfie Allen (Runner-Up)
    1. Jonathan Pryce (Winner)

  45. Without a doubt Liam Cunningham. Excellent choice for Davos, wonderful actor. I liked Davos in the books, but he would never have made it onto my favorite characters list without Liam.

  46. Hodor Targaryen,

I strongly agree with you, I feel like Dean has been really underestimated and underappreciated. He really sold the broken boy Tommen was. He gets my vote!

Having said that, this is probably the hardest catergory to narrow down to only five, damn. But Liam and Alfie for sure deserve it.

  47. Thank you Greatjon of Slumber, for putting these polls together 🙂

This is one of the worst categories to choose from, for me! All these guys have in their own way contributed into making this season as fabtastic as it was! That said, and after a night’s consideration I voted:

    – Alfie Allen: this is a honourary vote, because I think he had even stronger moments in previous seasons. Nonetheless, the little time we spend with him in season 6, was excellent, and he totally nailed it.
    – Conleth Hill: because….Varys! An excellent actor. Nothing would be the same without him.
    – Jonathan Pryce: though this role was a piece of cake for him, he’s a living legend and he made Sparrow a memorable character!
    – Kristian Nairn. One would think that having only one word to say through the entire series is easy. On the contrary, I think it’s the hardest circumstance for an actor. He’s made every Hodor he said, count! One of the most deeply emotional perfomances this year.
    – And my first choice, the winner for season 6, is (TA DAAAAAAAAAAAAA….) Liam Cunningham! A scene stealer this year! The confrontation with Mel, was one of the strongest moments of the season to me. So, here’s to you Sir Davos! 😀

  48. ygritte:
    dothrakian raven,

F*cking thank you for stating that because I was just about to make a similar statement lol! To each their own but the over doing it does get a little hard to take after awhile.

My picks were Liam, Owen, Alfie, Pryce

As much as I sympathize with Hodor’s sad destiny, the acting was not something that stood out to me at all. It would have been hard to do with a character like Hodor because in fairness to the character, Kristian couldn’t have acted it with pain or insight or emotion showing in his eyes because Hodor didn’t understand much of anything at all. So his eyes and deliveries of “Hodor” didn’t add anything in my opinion. I get that people like Hodor but this is about acting.

Alfie Allen – sure, it’s the usual choice but that because he’s an effing talented actor. With his eyes, his body language, his voice control and delivery, he nails his scenes every. single. time. I’m still smarting from the fact that HBO didn’t submit him this year either – in my opinion, he is the best of the best.

Kristopher Torrmundson is perfectly cast and there have been scenes throughout the series – in previous seasons – where he has shown that not only can he do comedy – he can also do fear or anger or jealousy.

Rory McCann owns the Hound. He stands out to me as another perfectly cast character – again, he has got great comedic talent and his deadpan deliveries gets me all the time, but he too has a big range actingwise it seems to me.

I forgot to vote for Dean and I’m a bit sad about that because I do think he did very well. Everybody forgets about Tommen and me too. Sighs.

  49. Alfie Allen
    Liam Cunningham
    Owen Teale
    Jonathan Pryce
    Kristofer Hivju

    Liam Cunningham for the win!!

  50. Can’t I vote for six?!

    1. Alfie Allen
    2. Liam Cunningham
    3. John Bradley
    4. Kristofer Hivju
    5. Dean Charles-Chapman

    and 6. Jonathan Pryce

    PLEASE

  51. I picked Liam, Jerome, Conleth, Kristofer, and Rory, but goodness me, this is an insanely tough category to select just five, let alone one!

  52. Liam Cunningham was practically a lead in season six, but if this is where I have to vote for him, he gets the nod.

Rory McCann…two episodes, a whole new Sandor Clegane. Bravo!

Alfie Allen gets a vote because, I was re-watching season 6 last week, and, I found myself incredibly moved by “I’d have taken you all the way to The Wall, you know. I’d have died to get you there.”. The guy’s a serious talent…but that’s a moment that really moved me; made me feel something for the character I hadn’t before. It was just so incredibly earnest that I think it’s more a turning point for the Theon character than throwing kennel girl off the balcony and taking the leap with Sansa.

A man has always respected No One. A man recognizes that No One has a talent for making the enigma of a character a real thing- more than a normal performance. No One gets a man’s vote as well.

  53. I always vote for Conleth Hill and Iain Glen since they are my favourite actor-character combinations. I alzo voted for Alfie, Liam and Owen, would have liked to add a vote for Pryce, if I had had a 6th vote.

  54. singedbylife: As much as I sympathize with Hodor’s sad destiny, the acting was not something that stood out to me at all.

I would disagree on that, but I guess it is a matter of how each viewer perceives the acting of each one of them.
He’s not my winner (I’m with Davos), but nonetheless, my view:
Yes, Kristian looks should definitely be a reason to cast him for this role.
However: while Hodor was a ‘simpleton’, he could understand danger, he could feel fear, as well as happiness. Kristian’s body had to express all that, without any dialogue, just with that repeated word. While in the past Hodor’s panic was so overcoming to him (remember the thunder incident, or other attacks of WW and etc), when it finally comes to the Door, his endgame, he overcomes his fear and panic, and heroically holds it, fullfilling his destiny. Kristian, to my view, did an excellent job with this scene: it wouldn’t be as emotional as it was if he hadn’t acted it so well, not only at that ep but through the seasons. 🙂
Maybe he wasn’t the best actor in GoT – and God there’s so much talent concentrated in this series – but he definitely contributed his best into the series and was – maybe a small, but however small, important, building block to the overall extraordinary edifice GoT is.
And I would say the same for anyone of the other actors, whether on that poll or not 🙂

  55. The guy that played Small Jon Umber (Dean Jagger) really stood out “Who Owns The North” still fires me up. I know a lot of people are going to choose Hodor (Kristian Nairn) & the High Sparrow (Jonathan Pryce). Both great actors but I really think Alliser Thorne (Owen Teale) deserves it. He owned his role and I just think he’s an amazing actor. Not only for the emphatic way that he says “bastard” but he literally steals scenes from other actors. As much as I disagreed with him you had to respect his conviction.

    “I fought, I lost. Now I rest.”

  56. singedbylife,

I couldn’t remember who the 5th actor I voted so I scrolled up to get reminded and add/edit my post but computer jammed up and time ran out. I don’t know why lately I have problems with this website and another one, it stalls and then this peach bar appear across the top saying something called “shockwave” crashed.

Anyways, Kristopher H. (Tormund) was the name I forgot 🙂 Can’t leave him out.

  57. Tom Wlaschiha , bringing an enigma to life, hands down.

Kristofer Hivju, very entartaining perfomance , funny but touching , there is not many strong males characters left in the show

Jonathan Pryce , fantastic as always

Alfie Allen , one of the best actors in the show

John Bradley , he is overlooked because Sam is not very popular but he gives a very solid performance

  58. Elena,

It seems like the High Sparrow had a ton of screen time. But maybe that’s because I found him tiresome and just wanted him to go away.

  59. Durka10,

Doesn’t make him a lead lol

To me a lead is someone who personal story-journey is being followed / told and focused on – jon Tyrion Jamie and bran and dany Sansa arya and cersei

  60. Liam Cunningham should probably always win this in a landslide. But Dean-Charles Chapman also deserves some love this year. He killed it in the finale despite limited screentime.

Well Alfie Allen is always amazing too. But I’m used to seeing him in the Lead category.

  61. Durka10,

It was not about if he is good or not. It was the category that blew me. I don’t think of Ramsay as a main character in any way and I never will. To me he was an evil side character messing with the main ones.

  62. And here I already struggled with picking only 5 among the guest starring actors.
This is gonna take a while, very, very long while.

  63. Liam, Rory, Owen.

All 3 made the most of every moment they were on the screen. Even if it’s limited, every scene they own.

With the departure of Stephen Dillane and Charles Dance (and now, Owen Teale), I think Liam and Rory are easily the two best actors on this show.
Not to take anything away from the fantastic work of Peter or Kit but I think the “secondary” cast members are the unsung heroes .

  64. My choices come from the feeling I got from those scenes with these actors when I found them most believable. From 5 to 1, being 1 the most believable character:

Roger Ashton Griffiths – Mace Tyrell
    Dean-Charles Chapman – Tommen Baratheon
    Aidan Gillen – Littlefinger
    Liam Cunningham – Davos
    John Bradley – Samwell Tarly

  65. Dee Stark:
    Durka10,

To me a lead is someone who personal story-journey is being followed / told and focused on – jon Tyrion Jamie and bran and dany Sansa arya and cersei

I don’t think Jaime’s personal story (or journey) has been told since he returned to King’s Landing in season 4. Once Joffrey was killed, his whole role seemed to be as Cersei’s side-piece. When he got the chance to get out of KL (Dorne/Riverrun) and interact with someone other than his “Master”, we got to see something other than his smirk and hear more than “We are all that matter!”. Those moments where way to short lived. I look forward to him breaking away from Cersei once and for all. Never been a big Jaime fan but TV Jaime is such a bore.

  66. kells,

I agree. If Jaime Lannister is to be considered a main character then so is Theon Greyjoy.

But I do understand there here on WotW it’s the majority who decides whether someone is to be referred to as a main character or not, right, Sue? That is how the 5 were determined, right? Because lots of people named them so?

  67. Tough choice, but singling out for season 6 ONLY,

Davos (I want to go drinking with Davos)
    Theon
    Sam
The Hound (I think Rory IS the Hound…very little acting required!)
Roose (that slithery way he speaks to Ramsey about his “wild dog” ways….chills!)

Honorables are Hodor, the High Sparrow and Tormund, but really everyone deserves for such an amazing season….even Qyburn! Everyone was just awesome this season. Can’t wait to see where we’re heading!

Come on. Jaime is main character, Nikolaj as an actor is listed second only after Peter. Dorne and Riverrun existed just for him. Saying that Cersei is more “main” than him…. doesn’t have any ground. Even you like some character or not, the show has it’s own big 5 and Jaime is on them.
This is like saying that Jon doesn’t have a story when Sansa is there, or Tyrion when Dany is there…..

BTW Maisie and Sophie are in Belfast

    and Nikolaj as well

  69. kells,

i could easily take Jamie out of my list of main characters, im not so sure why I named him

but for me the leads are Jon, Dany, Arya, Sansa, Bran, Tyrion, Cersei

I added Jamie in there cause there was acouple season that focused on him and his struggles.

I have no problems removing him from that list though

  70. What a difficult choice! Very hard to narrow down. Davos, Hound, Tormund, Roose, Theon, but then there’s the ones I left out including the High Sparrow and poor Tommen.

  71. Maggie: Come on. Jaime is main character, Nikolaj as an actor is listed second only after Peter. Dorne and Riverrun existed just for him. Well, hello there Nikolaj. Scruffy beard and all. YUM!

  72. Wow what a tough, tough category. I went with Liam, Alfie, Rory, Kristian and Kristofer. Bronn had almost no time this year, neither did Sam. Jorah’s farewell to Dany was hard to ignore but in the end, Hodor’s sacrifice, the Hound’s return and Tormund’s hilarious sub-sub-sub plot with Brienne edged him out. Liam and Alfie are the top dogs here though, with Liam being the shining star of the group. If I were a director in the movie or TV industry, I would be fighting to get him into all of my movies/shows. He can do gravitas, pathos, heartbreak and humor and make it all look easy. He really elevates the story of those he supports. My feelings for Stannis were always couched in “Well, he might be a total ass but he’s one of the only people in the world to see the true worth of Davos Seaworth so he can’t be all bad.”

  73. Michiel Huisman wasn’t listed at all. Neither was Smalljon Umber. Just my opinion but both should have been under supporting especially when Olly and others who barely spoke or had screentime were on the list. (I might be biased though :P)

  74. alikat,
    Stephanie milligan,

Michiel Huisman and Daniel Portman aren’t listed as options here because no one nominated them in the preliminary round. Only one person had to put their names forward for them to make the roster, but no one did – presumably because they had others they preferred to vote for. It’s unfortunate, but those are the parameters (For what it’s worth, I thought they both did good work this year and would have happily thrown them a nomination if I had realized they were going to be shut out).

As Dee Stark says, Dean S. Jagger (Smalljon Umber) was nominated in the Guest Actor category, which he qualified for because he only appeared in two episodes this season and less than 10 total (Brenock O’Connor, who played Olly, appeared in more than 10 episodes of the series, so he was ineligible there – he had to go in Supporting). That category’s still open for voting for another 90 minutes – you can vote for him there if you like!

  75. Among the others, I voted for the guy who plays Mace Tyrell. The very last look on his face was so tragic, it broke my heart. When you can make me feel so much with just a single expression, you get a vote. Bravo, take a bow, Mace!

  76. This was a total bitch. In no order,

    Dean-Charles Chapman (Tommen)
    Kristian Nairn (Hodor)
    Michael McElhatton (Roose)
    Aidan Gillen (Littlefinger)
    Liam Cunningham (Davos)

  77. Anyway, Alfie Allen rules this one, as per usual. Pryce, Lesser, McElhatton(sp?), Cunningham closely behind

  78. The chorus of supporting actors deserving of at least a mention is amazing. So I focused on mainly older actors. To the younger guys and you know who you are, just keep being you. Starring roles await.
    Sincerely, the Cougar of Riverhawk.

  79. Jaqen – Tom Wlaschiha
    Theon – Alfie Allen
    Hodor – Kritian Naim
    Littlefinger – Aiden Gillen
    Varys – Conleth Hill

  80. I picked up two:
    1) Jonathan Pryce as the High Sparrow
    2) Owen Teale as ser Alliser Thorne
