Announcing the Watchers on the Wall Awards

WotW Awards
One of the most common questions we here at Watchers On The Wall received when we established the new site was, “Are you going to do an awards show this year?” Well, as you can see, there will be a yearly show awarding the best of Game of Thrones season 4, voted on entirely by the fans.

After a few days of discussion between the WotW staff and some of the community here, we’ve decided on a structure for the awards in which everyone’s opinion will be heard, and everyone’s favorites will have a shot. In past awards, people have expressed some frustration at their choices never having a chance so we hope this system will make things more equal.

Update 8/6: There’s just one day left in the initial open nomination period, so be sure to get your nominations in today!

The categories we’ll be voting on are:

Best Episode
Best Actor
Best Actress
Best Supporting Actor
Best Supporting Actress
Best Guest Actor (appearance in 3 episodes or less)
Best Guest Actress (appearance in 3 episodes or less )
Best Death Scene
Best Visual Effects Scene
Best Action Scene
Best Comedic Scene
Best Dramatic Scene
Funniest Quote
Best All-around Quote

The way to decide winners will be a three-step process.

1. Initial Gathering of Nominees: The initial pool of nominees for each category will be taken from suggestions of the Watchers on the Wall readership. Please submit them in the Comments section below. We will not be accepting them by Contact email as our inboxes already runneth over, so please make your nominations with the categories they’re for clearly labeled in Comments. You may use more than one post, as many as you need, or if you decide to add more nominations at a later time. *People have very different opinions on whether an actor is supporting or lead, so it’s important to label your nominations carefully!*
The exception to the initial nominating is for Best Episode. You don’t need to nominate Episodes, because all episodes will be in the final poll for Best Episode.

2. First round Preliminary Poll: The pool of info will be sorted into categories by the WotW staff and volunteer community members. Each category will then have a poll. The top five vote-getters in each category win a nomination. (There may be some categories where they aren’t five noms to begin with. They’ll skip this round and go right to step 3!).

3. Final Round Voting: A second round of polls will determine the winner of each finalized category.

The winners of the Watchers on the Wall Awards will be announced on one night, on a date to be determined not too far in the future. We’re still planning the event, but it’ll be a party. We’re thinking live chat, Bex drinking pink moscato and talking about Kit’s hair, and that’s just the start.

By the way, Greatjon of Slumber took the initiative in getting the awards going again over at WotW and is helping out in a huge way with the polls, so we’d like to give him a big thanks!

We’ll keep these comments open for five days to accept initial nominations. Not long after that, we’ll start the polls. Vote early, vote often!

  9. Man, Guest Actor / Actress is tough. Both Indira Varma and Diana Rigg appeared in 4 episodes this season, and Natalie Dormer appeared in 5, so none of them can be counted as “guests” by our standards. And I would suggest Pedro Pascal is a guest actor, as he was only here for one season, but by our definition he doesn’t qualify. This is tough!

  10. Yes, that was my mistake in the post- every episode is in the final poll for Best Episode. It’s only the other categories you need to nominate right now.

  17. Axechucker: Man, Guest Actor / Actress is tough.

Pedro was practically a lead this year, in seven episodes, he definitely wouldn’t be a guest star by our standards. ‘Guest’ is supposed to be a minimal thing. We had to draw a line somewhere. As it is, people like Carice and Jack Gleeson fall under the three-episode line.

  43. Re: the Guest Star questions. Anyone with 3 or less appearances in this season.

Of course the spirit of the category is to recognize people in smaller roles/guest roles who are less likely to get recognized in the supporting category so keep that in mind. But we’re not going to insist on the particulars (like have they been in previous seasons) other than episode appearance numbers.

3 or less episodes. That means not Diana Rigg and not Rose Leslie. They’d both go in the Supporting category.

You can nominate someone who was only in say, two episodes, in the Best Supporting category though it’s hard to imagine them faring well against the other nominees.

  44. Before voting I just want to say thanks for this “In past awards, people have expressed some frustration at their choices never having a chance so we hope this system will make things more equal.” A million thanks for this 🙂

  48. There’s obviously a lot of confusion over who should be considered lead, supporting and guest actor/actress. Which is mostly understandable (though sometimes it’s really not; I can’t for the life of me understand how anyone could consider Maisie or Sophie supporting actresses; Sansa may have been treated as a supporting character in season 3, in what was her story in the book – the story of her own forced wedding, no less! – but this season she was finally allowed to have her own story. She also had one of the biggest screentimes. Maisie was nominated as supporting by a poster who also nominated Rory for supporting; now, it would make sense to nominate him as supporting and her as lead, but if both of them were supporting, well, who was the lead in that storyline that they were both supporting?? )

I would suggest that the difference between lead and supporting should be made in the way you used to do it at WiC: who had their own storyline that was centered around them, and who did not. For guest actor, I just don’t think it feels right to call Alfie Allen or Jack Gleeson guest actors, when they have been in the main cast since season 1, especially Allen, who is going to be in the main cast the next year as well.

Anyway, I would nominate Pascal, Allen, McCann and Gleeson in whatever categories you decide to, Dinklage obviously for lead… as far as actual guest stars go, Burn Gorman. Actresses: Sophie Turner, Lena Headey, Maisie Williams, guest actress Kate Dickie, Tara Fitzgerald.
Best death scene: Joffrey, Oberyn, Ygritte.
Action scene – Hound vs Brienne, Oberyn vs the Mountain, the fight at the inn in Two Swords, Jon vs Karl, Jon vs Styr, Bran!Hodor kills Locke.
Visual effects scene – the baby becomes a White Walker, the chaining of the dragons.
Dramatic scene – the Hound asking Arya to kill him; Oberyn’s entire conversation with Tyrion in his cell; Jon and Ygritte’s last moment; Jon’s conversation with Mance; Arya kills Polliver; Ramsey makes Theon shave him; Shae’s testimony and Tyrion’s speech at the trial; the chaining of the dragons; Sansa tells Littlefinger why she saved him…

I have to think some more about the other categories.

  66. DIANA RIGG DOESNT COUNT AS SHE WAS IN 4 eps…. Geeez i thought u guys watched the show

  67. They do. They just don’t read this comment thread.

Rigg is going in the Best Supporting Actress category polls.

  68. Isn’t a guest actor someone who hasn’t been on the show before? In that case, Miranda’s ass has been on in two seasons. I would like to change my vote to the chick in the hot tub who likes pirate jokes.

  69. Best Episode: Mockingbird or The Children

Best Action Scene: Brienne vs. The Hound
Best Comedic Scene: Loras and Jaime at Joffrey’s wedding, hilarious. I was sad to see his role so reduced.
Best Dramatic Scene: I think I’d have to go with either the death of that random farmer in Mockingbird, or Bran’s long-awaited rendezvous with the three-eyed raven.
Funniest Quote: “You don’t need to make formal alliances with people you trust.” I found that hilarious. Such a deceptively simple statement, and very pertinent to almost every character interaction in the show.
Best All-around Quote: There’s so many, but I’d have to say pretty much any conversation between Jaime and Tyrion could count as a “quote” in itself. But otherwise, “nothing’s not good or bad, nothing’s just nothing”. A concept many people seem to find difficult to grasp, a reminder that nothing is ever one thing or the other, but always a mix of many different, very often contradictory things simultaneously.

    :).

  71. I’m just going to post this again.

  72. Can you try to make sure Best Dramatic Scene doesn’t have death scenes? There’s been some overlap in the past.

Best All-around Quote — The young may rejoice in the new world you have built for them, but for those of us too old to change, there is only fear and squalor.

  98. I couldn’t decide on my Best overall Quote last night. I’ll nominate the Hound’s ” There is no safety you dumb bitch” speech to Brienne. I think this defines Arya’s storyline since season one.

  103. I just accidentally clicked on the pop up ad to check my arrest record. I’m happy to state that I have never been arrested.

If Alfie was in three or less episodes then I vote for him as Guest actor as well. I can’t think of another Guest Actress (actress actress actress) better than Miranda’s ass however. Maybe Yara. Or that pussy Karl Tanner.

  104. jentario:
    Greg,

Arya laughing is definitely the best comedic scene, I’ll vote for it too

I’m surprised that people consider that a comedic scene.

  105. nymeriathedirewolf,

Doh, I’m a moron! I was certain Diana Rigg was only in three episodes.

Can I change it to Hannah Murray (Gilly)?

Also, if we want to help out with this how do we do that? Just send a message?

  106. Rygar: It helps when you have a sense of humor.Boom. Roasted.

Yes, having a sense of humor definitely helps in noticing that there’s no humor involved in that scene. I can see how the lack of a sense humor can lead to confusion. “Someone is laughing. Must be a comedic scene.” That’s why so many sitcoms have laughing tracks…

  107. Annara Snow: Yes,having a sense of humor definitely helps in noticing that there’s no humor involved in thatscene. I can see how the lack of a sense humor can lead to confusion. “Someone is laughing. Must be a comedic scene.” That’s why so many sitcoms have laughing tracks…

Quite the contrary. There is much humor there and you are stretching with that analogy. But that’s OK. You’re above it all.

  108. Rygar: Quite the contrary. There is much humor there and you are stretching with that analogy. But that’s OK.You’re above it all.

Judging by forum comments fans seem to have found it funny or just odd in equal numbers. It’s definitely played for laughs IMHO, surely the look on Sandor’s face when he realises he’s missed out on a payoff *again* is proof of that.

  109. I too thought Dianna was in 3 episodes or less. I’ll just add categories I missed out and make other changes.

Best Episode: The Mountain and the Viper
Best Supporting Actor – John Bradley
Best Supporting Actress – Gwendoline Christie, Dianna Riggs, Sibel Kekilli.
Best Guest Actress (appearance in 3 episodes or less ) – Indira Varma
Best All-around Quote: “You raped her! You murdered her! You killed her children.”

  110. All Hail the Wolf Girl: Judging by forum comments fans seem to have found it funny or just odd in equal numbers. It’s definitely played for laughs IMHO, surely the look on Sandor’s face when he realises he’s missed out on a payoff *again* is proof of that.

My Roast was due more to the implacable nature of the comment. As if someone who did find it amusing is in the wrong.

  111. Now that it’s clearer who’s a support actor and who’s a guest, I’d like to change my votes to:

Best Guest Actor (appearance in 3 episodes or less): Alfie Allen, Jack Gleeson
Best Guest Actress (appearance in 3 episodes or less ): Kate Dickie, Indira Varma

  112. I’m confused. I’m seeing lots of votes for for Indira Varma in the guest actress category, but off the top of my head I’m sure she was in more than three. I recall her being introduced in the first episode with Oberyn, at the Purple Wedding with Oberyn, being part of the sex party Tywin barges in on in Breaker of chains, and of course at the trial by combat. Am I’m missing something here?

  113. Everyone: Margaery and Olenna Tyrell both appeared in more than three episodes, and are thus not eligible for “guest actress”.

  114. Best Episode: The Watchers on the Wall
    Best Actor: Peter Dinklage
    Best Actress: Maisie Williams
    Best Supporting Actor: Pedro Pascal
    Best Supporting Actress: Gwendoline Christie

Best All-around Quote: Tyrion’s speech at his trial.

  115. Best Actor
    – Peter Dinklage, Isaac Hempstead Wright, Kit Harington
    Best Actress

Best All-around Quote – “You raped her! You murdered her! You killed her children!”-Oberyn Martell

Going to jump on the bandwagon with a nomination for Best Music too
    – Two Swords, Breaker Of Chains, Watchers On The Wall

  117. Best Episode – “The Lion and the Rose” is good, but I think “Mockingbird” was the best.

Best Actor – Peter Dinklage (Tyrion Lannister)

Best Actress – Lena Headey (Cersei Lannister), Sophie Turner (Sansa Stark), Maisie Williams (Arya Stark) (I’d vote for Lena)

Best Supporting ActorJacob Anderson (Grey Worm), Tywin Lannister (Charles Dance)

Best Supporting Actress – Missandei (Nathalie Emmanuel), Natalie Dormer (Margaery Tyrell), Diana Rigg (Olenna Tyrell)

Best Guest Actor (appearance in 3 episodes or less)

    Eligible:

    Joffrey Baratheon
    Ramsay Snow
    Roose Bolton
    Reek
    Robin Arryn
    Loras Tyrell
    Dontos Hollard
    Locke
    Olyvar

For me, it’s a toss-up between Joffrey Baratheon and Reek.

Best Guest Actress (appearance in 3 episodes or less )

    Eligible:

    Shireen Baratheon
    Selyse Baratheon
    Melisandre
    Gilly
    Lysa Arryn

I think it’s a toss-up between Shireen Baratheon and Lysa Arryn. Shireen is nicer, and you’re rooting for her, and for a child actress (well early teenager at this point) Kelly Ingram has been doing very well (and doesn’t get as much praise as Maisie and Sophie, though she should)….but on the whole, the brief Lysa stuff we saw was amazing. Hard to switch back and forth between “hysterical” mode like that. Plus the actress is leaving the show.

Best Death Scene – Joffrey Baratheon, Ygritte (I don’t know which is better; Ygritte’s was more dramatic, Joffrey’s was more fun to watch)

    Best Visual Effects Scene
Giants riding mammoths (The Watchers on the Wall)
Dragons distressed at being locked up (The Children)
Wideshot of the Free City of Braavos (The Laws of Gods and Men)(
Stannis’s cavalry arrives to the rescue, with the Wall in the background (The Children)

(They’re all good; I use Stannis’s cavalry in front of the Wall as a desktop wallpaper because it’s such an iconic shot; the Wall was “the edge of the world” in Season 1, and now there are massive armies thundering around it on horseback….but personally, you just gotta have elephants. And I was worried they’d be cut. So I’m for “Giants riding mammoths down there!” – particularly the shot where the flaming oil barrels explode and the mammoth catches fire and runs).

    Best Action Scene
*The Hound and Arya versus Polliver and his men
*The Hound versus Brienne of Tarth
    *Ser Alliser versus Tormund

    Best Comedic Scene
*”Lucky for you, none of this will happen, because you’ll never marry her [Cersei]”. “…And neither will you.” (Jaime and Loras, “The Lion and the Rose”)
*Oznak zo Pahl in “Breaker of Chains”:
“Byjan vavi demble eva o, trezy eme verdje espo jimi! Oa mysa iles me nýnyghi, si oa kiba tuziles espo tomistos! Já si hojgá oa gundja, trezy eme mero dovodedha! Ghorgan ji pungo va o, nynta Dare espo Zaldrizes, o si une oi dovodedhi, Vesterozi azzzzzantys.”
    http://gameofthrones.wikia.com/wiki/Oznak_zo_Pahl#Quotes
    ACTUAL TRANSLATION:
“I fart in your general direction, son of a window-dresser! Your mother was a hamster, and your father smelt of elderberries! Go and boil your bottom, son of a silly person! I wave my private parts at your aunties! I don’t want to talk to you no more you empty-headed animal food trough wiper! I blow my nose at you, so-called “Dragon Queen”, you and all your silly Westerosi kaniggets!”

*Hot Pie returns in “Mockingbird”, is enthusiastic about his kidney pie, then just as Podrick warns Brienne that it might not be wise to ask about “Sansa Stark” by name, Hot Pie informs them that he actually saw Sansa’s presumed-dead sister Arya, and gives them his much-improved direwolf-shaped bread.

    Best Dramatic Scene
*Oberyn visits Tyrion in his cell, and recalls that he saw no “monster”, just a baby. (“Mockingbird”)
*Missandei gives Grey Worm a lesson in speaking the Common Tongue, and both commiserate over having been enslaved. (“Oathkeeper”)

    Funniest Quote
*”Do what you do best…take off your clothes.” (Mockingbird)
*”Elyo Grivas, First Sword of Braavos” (alright, online book fandom laughed at that one)

Prince Oberyn Martell: “The King’s own uncle Imp, Tyrion, son of Tywin, Lannister. And what are you, his hired killer?”
Bronn: “Started that way, aye. Now I’m a knight.”
Prince Oberyn Martell: “How did that come to pass?”
Bronn: “Killed the right people, I suppose.”

Polliver “You don’t seem to understand the situation…”
Sandor Clegane: “I understand that if any more words come pouring out your cunt mouth, I’m gonna have to eat every fucking chicken in this room”

“Look, the pie!” – Margaery Tyrell, “The Lion and the Rose”, desperately attempting to diffuse the growing, murderous tension growing between a drunken Joffrey and Tyrion, and momentarily succeeding in distracting her new husband.

    Best All-around Quote
*Polliver’s death – Arya asks him leading questions to make him repeat Lommy’s dying words when Polliver taunted the unarmed, maimed boy as he killed him – now roles reversed, and Arya is taunting Polliver as she kills him in the same way.
*”I will answer injustice with justice.” (Daenerys, “Oathkeeper”, leading into her crucifying the slave-masters)
*Grenn and his men recite the Night’s Watch oath while standing their ground in the face of certain death as a giant rushes through the tunnel (“The Children”)

Best All Round Quote: “Do you know what leadership means Lord Snow? It means that the person in charge gets second-guessed by every clever little twat with a mouth. Well there’s been no mention of this “Alfie Allen”, but that guy named Reek is getting mentioned a lot.

  123. Another for Funniest Quote which I forgot:

  144. Has anyone even mentioned Isaac Hempstead Wright? I feel like he doesn’t belong into any categories because he was barely in season 4.
But he was great nevertheless, I like the scene when he was holding his tears when he saw Jon. It was disturbingly realistic.

I’d suggest him into whatever category he’s supposed to be in.

Best Comedic Scene – All the fucking chickens. Nuff said
Best Dramatic Scene – Oh, this is close one too. The scene with Oberyn and Tyrion in the cell (“it was just a baby”) ripped my heart out. But the scene where Arya leaves the Hound was wrenching as well. I’d give it to Oberyn/Tyrion by a narrow margin.

  158. It just shows how great the young actors are on this show when Maisie and Sophie seem to be getting a lot of nominations

  159. Dont you usually have 5 nominees in each category?

Ive been looking at some of the lists people have come up with and a lot of people are nominating the likes of Maisie Williams and Sophie Turner as Supporting Actress

The only 5 ‘lead’ actresses i can think of are Lena, Maisie, Sophie, Emilia and Natalie Dormer

Supporting actresses could include Gwendoline Christie, Rose Leslie, Diana Rigg, Sibel Kekilli, Carice Van Houten, Nathalie Emmanuelle

I dont really see how Maisie and/or Sophie can be taken out of the lead actress group (even though Maisie was only in 6 episodes this season) unless you have them in two categories (which wouldnt be a bad idea, they both might end up winning which would be great)

  160. Rigg is going in Best Supporting, for sure, not guest. She was in too many episodes.

    Walter Harrow,

The rules are explained in the post, but we will ultimately wind up with five nominees in each category (except for the quotes, where there will most likely be ten, I think we’ve decided). I would agree Maisie and Sophie are female leads. However, I’m more inclined to put Christie in lead this year as opposed to Dormer, who really didn’t have a lot to do in several episodes, and wasn’t the center of a storyline as Brienne was.

“It is rare to meet a Lannister who shares my enthusiasm for dead Lannisters”
“My friend, you are not my friend”

  166. Had a tough time distinguishing cast from supporting cast, but I hope I managed.

Best Episode: The Children (could be a wee bit longer, but to me it didn’t feel rushed as it very easily could with so much stuff crammed into it … and I’m content with that)
Best Actor: Peter Dinklage (if season 2 is considered as Tyrion’s season, I consider season 4 as Peter’s season)
Best Actress: Lena Headey (her and Gwen … not sure who should I put in which category, but I decided to nominate Lena for best actress, based on the fact, that she appeared in more episodes (although one might argue she was little more than a background characters at times))
Best Supporting Actor: Stannis Dillane (day will come, when I will be able to nominate him for the best (main) actor)
    Best Supporting Actress: Gwendoline Christie
Best Guest Actor: Ben Hawkey (so many awesome performances — Burn Gorman, Mark Gatiss, Ciaran Hinds, Michael McElhatton, Alfie Allen, Jack Gleeson, to name a few — but Hot Pie’s appearence cought me off guard)
Best Guest Actress: Kate Dickie (although Kerry Ingram is a close second and deserves an honourable mention)
Best Death Scene: Tywin (wanted to say Oberyn, because it was more spectacular and as such unforgettable, but nay … Tywin’s scene was in my oppinion better)
Best Visual Effects Scene: Wights in ep10. (IMO they were very well done and their non-standardness feeds my theories about them being of different origin that the ones we’re used to … and also; I like Pirates of the Carribean movies, so …)
Best Action Scene: Brienne vs. The Hound (one of the series’ best fights to date)
Best Comedic Scene: Hot Pie’s neverending description of his kidney pie recipe (Brienne’s sudden realization, that her complementing the pie might not have been the best idea … and the looks she and Pod exchanged during Hot Pie’s lecture … priceless)
Best Dramatic Scene: Tyrion’s speech (not much to add here)
Funniest Quote: “They do not have enough men between them to raid a pantry !” (classic Stannis)
Best All-around Quote: “Nothing makes the past a sweeter place to visit than the prospect of imminent death.” (by maester Aemon)

  167. I went in to this exercise intending to keep my list to three nominees whenever possible. I ended up failing rather miserably. Please consider the order in which I’ve listed my proposed nominees to be the priority that I’m assigning to them if you need to cut my list off at any point.

FYI, I decided to qualify “Lead” Actors and Actresses as the ones who were primarily driving their respective plotlines. Still far from an exact science, but better than going strictly by episode count. As utterly fantastic as Pedro Pascal and Charles Dance were, most of their scenes did tend to come in the service of Tyrion’s arc. Rory McCann was essentially the co-lead with Maisie Williams in their story this year, but given how things ended, I feel comfortable saying that their journey was ultimately part of “Arya’s story”.

  172. Walter Harrow,

Natalie Dormer is a supporting actress, not a lead actress. Gwendoline Christie was a lead actress this season, in addition to Lena, Emilia, Sophie and Maisie.

Adding my suggestions for comedic scene and quotes, which I hadn’t the last time:

    Best comedic scene:

    – Oberyn: “Hello”
    Tyrion: “Hello”
    Oberyn: “Not you”

    – Bronn’s and Tyrion’s reactions to Oberyn offering them whores

    Funniest quote:

Obviously, “What the fuck’s a Lommy” and Olenna’s speech about killing men at weddings are most likely to be nominated so far. My favorite is probably “The proud Lannister children: the cripple, the dwarf and the mother of madness”.

And there’s also this from Tyrion:
Oberyn: “The whole way from Dorne all anyone talked about was the monster that had been born to Tywin Lannister. A head twice the size of his body, a tail between his legs, claws, one red eye, the privates of both a girl and a boy.”
Tyrion: That would have made things so much easier.

Also, Oberyn: ” “And did you?” “Did I what?” “Fuck him like it was his last night in this world.”

    Best all-around quote:

    I have several:

    – Melisandre: “There is only one hell… the one we live in now.”

    – Sandor: “Safety?! Where the fuck’s that? Her aunt in the Eyrie is dead, her mother’s dead, her father’s dead, her brother’s dead, Winterfell is a pile of rubble. There is no safety, you dumb bitch.”

    – Oberyn: “People everywhere have their differences. In some places the highborn frown upon those of low birth. In other places the rape and murder of women and children is considered distasteful.”

    – Tyrion’s speech at the trial: “I did not do it. I did not kill Joffrey, but I wish that I had. Watching your vicious bastard die gave me more relief than a thousand lying whores. I wish I was the monster you think I am. I wish I had enough poison for the whole pack of you. I would gladly give my life to watch you all swallow it!”

    – Oberyn: “Tis a big and beautiful world. Most of us live and die in the same corner where we were born and never get to see any of it. I don’t want to be most of us.”

  173. Jared:

I agree with the principle, but by that principle, Christie was a lead actress (although not in the first three episodes).

Also, Oberyn’s storyline was not just in service of Tyrion’s; if you put him into supporting category because his scenes were supposedly in service of Tyrion, then you should do the same with Coster-Waldau. And he also had a far less coherent arc this year than Oberyn did.

Besides, you wouldn’t have enough Lead Actors, i.e. actors playing male characters who are driving their storylines and are not often primarily used in service of someone else’s story, and who are in more than 3 or 4 episodes. Basically, it would be just Dinklage and Harrington, since Bran, Theon, Stannis and Davos were in too few episodes and wouldn’t stand a chance. On the other hand, the supporting category would get quite competitive.

  174. Annara Snow,

Fair enough. I agree that Jaime’s character arc in Season 4 was largely subservient to Tyrion’s, although he did have his own separate dynamics with Brienne, Cersei, and Tywin. However, Coster-Waldau appeared in 9 episodes this year, even more than Peter Dinklage (who appeared in 8). In fact, Coster-Waldau and Headey led all actors in the cast this year by appearing in 9 episodes apiece. For that reason, I decided to place those two actors into the lead categories. The fact that they’re the second and third-billed actors in the opening credits also contributed to that. As you note, the Supporting categories have the potential to be insanely competitive – I easily could have listed six or seven actors for both.

My decision to nominate Pedro Pascal as a Supporting Actor was primarily influenced by Oberyn being a one-season character who was killed off in the eighth episode, although I’ll likely be voting for him in whatever category he winds up being nominated in.

In hindsight, I agree with you that based on the rather shoddy criteria that I proposed, Gwendoline Christie should probably be considered a lead actress this season. She got her own story arc in the latter half of the season and appeared in 7 episodes total (although her credited appearance for ‘Breaker of Chains’ was basically an acknowledgment of her presence at the wedding aftermath that opened the episode, which was shot simultaneously with the main wedding sequence in ‘The Lion and the Rose’). Once again, this is all frustratingly subjective.

So yes, no matter what rules we attempt to set for ourselves, the distinction between Lead and Supporting Actor here is going to wind up being pretty arbitrary (with a few notable exceptions – I don’t know anyone besides HBO and the Emmy voters who would consider Dinklage to be a Supporting Actor this year). With that in mind, I do wish that the moderators had set out more definitive criteria for differentiating between Lead and Supporting, even if it led to a few irregularities (such as series regulars Jack Gleeson, Carice van Houten, Alfie Allen, and Iwan Rheon techincally being eligible as Guest Actors). As it stands, most of the big names (Dinklage, Pascal, Williams) will likely wind up being nominated regardless, but characters on the fringes of the supporting category (Liam Cunningham, John Bradley, etc) might wind up being pushed out.

Oh well. I trust Sue, Axey, Oz, and the rest of the WotW team to make sound judgments about category placement when they’re tallying up the nominations and constructing the polls. It’s all in good fun, anyway. 🙂

  175. I see a bunch of people nominating Rigg in guest actress, but she was in four episodes this season.

  176. Given I’m the one counting all these ballots to get the preliminary polling done, Here’s what I’ll go with:

    Best Episode: In this order, I’d go 7, 9, 2, 1, 10, 6, 8, 4, 5, 3
Best Actor: The typical four everyone mentions, and then I think Rory McCann goes into this group
Best Actress: Sophie Turner all the way, along with Maisie, Lena and Gwen Christie
Best Supporting Actor: Let’s throw a vote to the very underrated Peter Vaughan, along with Alfie Allen (amazing), Pedro, Aiden Gillen, and Owen Teale
Best Supporting Actress: Diana Rigg, Natalie Dormer, Rose Leslie, Sibel Kekilli, and Nathalie Emmanuel
Guest Actor: Barry McGovern as the dying farmer, Andy Kellegher as Polliver, Anton Lesser as Qyburn, and of course Michael McElhatton as Roose Bolton
Guest Actress: Kate Dickie, Hannah Murray, Tara Fitzgerald, Kerry Ingram, and let’s throw in Lois Winstone as the seriously gross whore in Mole’s Town
Best Death: Oberyn’s head, and again, the dying farmer on the road, and Grenn
Best VFX: The Harryhausen tribute with the skeletal wights, the Titan of Braavos, and the giants and mammoths
Best Action Scene: Styr vs. Jon, Brienne vs. Hound, and the Fight at the Inn
Best Comedic Scene: Learning not to give up on the gravy, Tormund discusses what it’s like to fuck a bear
Best Dramatic Scene: Oberyn & Cersei near the beach, Tyrion and Oberyn in the cell, Grey Worm and Missandei discuss being Unsullied, Hodor realizing what he’s done after killing Locke
Funniest Line: I won’t mention all the other great ones, so I’ll throw in these: “You are not my friend, my friend.” – Salladhor Saan, and “There’s this knight, Leygood. Got thunderbolts on his shield? Right here is where I fuck his wife. And she’s a screamer, that one.” — Bronn
Best Quote: Same. I’m not going to repeat all the others, so I’ll do these:

“I saw you die tonight. I saw your body burn. I saw the snow fall, and bury your bones.” – Jojen
“She loved you.” “She told you?” “No. All she talked about was killing you. That’s how I know.” – Tormund Giantsbane
“The pain was bad. The smell was worse. But the worst thing was that it was my brother who did it. My father, who protected him, told everyone my bedding caught fire. You think you’re on your own?” – The Hound

  177. Greatjon of Slumber,

The reason I discounted Lois Winstone in the guest actress (3 episodes or less) category was that I thought having her do very little other than burp her way through “The Reynes of Castermere” and be mean to Gilly, was rather a waste of her talents.

Changing the subject slightly, I have quoted from one of Jared’s posts below

“Oh well. I trust Sue, Axey, Oz, and the rest of the WotW team to make sound judgments about category placement when they’re tallying up the nominations and constructing the polls. It’s all in good fun, anyway. :)”

I hope people remember it is “all in good fun, anyway” – one of the reasons I was becoming disenchanted with the site that shall not be named was because of the rancour and acidity that was creeping into certain (thought to be fair not all) comments.

  178. Best Episode – Watchers on the Wall
    Best Actor – Peter Dinklage
    Best Actress – Maise Williams
Best Supporting Actor – Owen Teale
Best Supporting Actress – Natalie Dormer

Best Action Scene – Brienne Vs Hound
Best Comedic Scene – Arya laughing at the Gates
Best Dramatic Scene – Ygrittes Death
Funniest Quote – What the fuck’s a Lommy?
Best All-around Quote – Thorne’s: “Brothers! A hundred generations have defended this castle! It’s never fallen before, she will not fall tonight! Those are Thenns at our walls! They eat the flesh of the men they kill! Do you want to fill the belly of a Thenn, tonight? Tonight, we fight! And when the sun rises, I promise you, Castle Black will stand! The Night’s Watch will stand! With me now! Now with me!”

  179. And as with all polls of this type the leaning will be a mark of “FAVOURITE” as much as “BEST” – I mean really how to compare different actors playing different roles, we can leave that to the likes of the EMMYs and then rip the piss out of them for their nonsensical choices 😉

It is just a fun way to recognise those who gave us so much on screen pleasure/displeasure so hopefully we can all accept whatever choices are made in good heart*.

*Unless Maisie doesn’t win anything, in which case violence will ensue 😀

  180. Dame of Mercia: The reason I discounted Lois Winstone in the guest actress (3 episodes or less) category was that I thought having her do very little other than burp her way through “The Reynes of Castermere” and be mean to Gilly, was rather a waste of her talents.

Sure, that’s a fair point. To me she was so perfectly grody and disgusting that I gotta throw her a bone. She won’t make it out of the preliminaries, methinks.

It’s also high time D&D figured out another song to reference even if they don’t get a band to perform it. It’s getting odd having just 2 songs.

  181. Best Comedic Scene: Learning not to give up on the gravy, Tormund discusses what it’s like to fuck a bear

How could I forget about that! Forget about my previous picks, I’m throwing my support behind the bear that Tormund never fucked!

  182. Best Actor: Peter Dinklage, Nikolaj CW, Kit Harington,
Best Actress: Sophie, Maisie, Gwendoline, Lena, Emilia

Best Visual Effects Scene: White Walkers’ home/baby
Best Action Scene: Jon vs Styr, Brienne vs Hound, Mountain vs Viper, Hound & Arya vs Polliver etc, Jon vs Karl
Best Comedic Scene: Tormund Husband to Bears story, Hot Pie’s return a la gravy
Best Dramatic Scene: White Walker take the baby to the king, Tyrion’s trial, Grenn holds the gate, Joffrey’s slow death

Funniest Quote: Tyrion: “You’re famous for fucking half of Westeros. You just arrived at the capital after two weeks of bad road. Where would you go?”
Bronn: “I’d probably go to sleep, but I’m getting old.”

    Best All-around Quote:
“Thousands of books and no eyes to read them. Old age is a wonderful source of ironies if nothing else.” -Maester Aemon
“I was nothing at all. And when you’re nothing at all, there’s no more reason to be afraid.” -Sam

“There is only one hell, princess. The one we live in now.” -Melisandre
“Everywhere in the world they hurt little girls.”-Cersei

Tyrion: “I’m guilty of a far more monstrous crime. I am guilty of being a dwarf.”
Tywin: “You are not on trial for being a dwarf.”
Tyrion: “Oh yes I am. I’ve been on trial for that my entire life.”
