White Walkers in London as fans react to the Game of Thrones finale

HBO UK organised a communal screening of Game of Thrones episode 510 “Mother’s Mercy” in London on Monday and gathered some expectation statements beforehand, as well as live audience reactions during the key moments of the series finale. The video below brings us the highlights of the evening – it’s a joy to watch.

TheΒ end of the season also bringsΒ the release of the entire S5 in Digital HD, i.e. all ten episodes are available for download via a variety of platforms. To mark the occasion, a promo stunt was organised, likewise in London, where a White Walker perambulated the streets, stopped traffic, and took the tube. Witness the photos below. How would you react if you came across the guy?

  1. Hodor!

White walker is awesome! ha ha… I wish they’d do that stuff in the states. πŸ™‚

  2. Looking at that first pic I bet he got a few choice earfuls from the cab drivers!

On the Tube it’s more like “OK – everyone just ignore the lunatic and pretend he isn’t there”.

  3. People are so used to students and jobless walking around in costumes to promote products for some easy cash. Add a crow to fight him and that can be something to stop and watch. Or something like the Jurrasic World thing in Waterloo station.

  4. Never saw any white walkers when I worked in London (though until recently it’s been quite a cold June in the UK; maybe not as cold as in the Land of Always Winter) though I did see people dressed up as ghosts for Hallowe’en ghost walks and that type of thing. Jokey Arya, it’s possible the cabbies are au fait with GoT so might take it in their stride.

  5. bigb:
I love how none of them could look during the Trant scene but ended up cheering anyway.

I think that was very much like my reaction, other than my eyes were glued to the scene. My thoughts were revolving around how brutal it was and what comments would be like for how stabby it was. When it was done though I cheered and thought it was awesome. πŸ™‚

  6. Cersei’s Brain,

Meh, you see weirder things on the Underground! We are a little bit more emotionally mature than our American cousins though…no offence intended. Stuff upper lip and all that!

Old London town isn’t the safest place to be lately. If the Whitewalkers don’t get you then the raptors will!

  7. Thanks for this, as a Londoner i can vouch for the tube etiquette that you would just ignore a white walker on the tube!

Although ill still be visiting the site during the off-season, i just want to thank everybody at WOTW for their coverage and efforts throughout what (for the staff) must have been a stressful and imo amazing season 5.

  8. Ronin,

If they’re attention starved what are you? What did you hope to accomplish by making a rude remark about a bunch of strangers for no reason if not to get some attention? Even if it’s negative. Just saying.

  9. Ha! I’m surprised he wasn’t asked to move on by the police.
How do people get tickets for events like this or the IMAX screenings? Do they advertise locally or do you have to be some sort of VIP?

  10. Cersei’s Brain:
My goodness, you Brits are very reserved.

That’s how we roll πŸ˜‰ And as a resident of London I can confirm no one would bat an eyelid at a white walker. Apart from the fact a city of 8 million residents (plus a huge number of commuters and visitors) has it’s fair share of weirdos, public transport etiquette is to totally ignore anyone you don’t know; no eye contact, conversation or any kind of acknowledgement at all. Although if he did massacre half the carriage people would definitely tut and assume he was a tourist unused to our London ways. And if they weren’t in a hurry to get elsewhere maybe let a member of staff know there was a bit of a mess on the train and they might need the cleaners to give it the once over πŸ˜‰ Oh and congrats on your Brandor figure win πŸ™‚

EDIT: I see others confirmed the tube thing too. If I spot any of my fellow Watchers on it I’ll…totally ignore you of course, don’t want people to think I’m some kind of chatty tourist weirdo! πŸ˜‰

  11. Ashara Dayne,
Don’t know about any other events but when SkyAtlantic did the world premier showing at the Tower of London, there was a thread about it on here which said more info would appear on their website (SA’s not this one). So did a quick check each day and lo and behold about a week later the draw to get tickets appeared. It was open to everyone, no proof of Sky subscription needed, although I think it was restricted to residents of the UK and possibly Eire. (I posted the links on here in several threads but was met with apparent apathy.) As someone who doesn’t like anything fire or burning related, I’m quite glad I didn’t win any, thus avoiding Mance’s death on a much-bigger-than-my-tv screen! πŸ™

  12. TheTouchOfFrost,
King’s Langley = win! Did the murder/incest/bewbs and generally lawless unpleasantness rate shoot up as a result? As for TBC, rookie mistake, NEVER demand that unless you know who you could be facing. I’m a civil servant (as are the DVLA) and we are a more than 400,000 strong army with some pretty specialist skills, including those who could bore you to death in a manner Ramsay would consider really cruel and way over the top! The parking dispute guy would end up using his weapons on himself to end his own suffering πŸ˜‰

  13. Ace of Mace,
That is AWESOME! Particularly love the way the guy in the middle doesn’t seem to react at all but everyone else goes into complete meltdown around him πŸ˜€ Sorry I seem to have taken over this thread, need other people to post loads of stuff to balance it out fairly πŸ™

  14. Lulu’s Mum,

I imagine the incest levels were already pretty high! πŸ˜›
Guy seemed to have a plan though. A very specific choice of weapons he had in mind!
