Game of Thrones filming locations in Peñíscola announced

Plaza de Armas

The shooting locations for season six of Game of Thrones in the city of Peñíscola, Spain, were officially confirmed by the City Council this week. Filming is expected to occur from October 3rd through the 6th.

The council provided details about the forthcoming filming in order to keep the local citizens informed about possible restrictions and traffic issues due to shooting. The City Council stated that areas surrounding the Portal Fosc, the Plaza Santa Maria and the Plaza de Armas would be affected as they are filming locations.

Plaza Santa Maria at night

The space of the Plaza Santa Maria, notable for its tall stone archways, is often used for music performances and public events.

Preparations will begin in the Plaza Santa Maria any day now, as the Council cites September 15th as the date that construction may start. Vehicles are restricted in the area from Sept. 23rd until October 7th. Pedestrian traffic is restricted from October 3rd to October 6th, indicating filming will take place in this period.

Portal Fosc and its interior tunnel

The Portal Fosc is a white stone gateway that served as the entrance to Peñíscola until the 18th century.

The tunnel and ascent to the Portal Fosc will be restricted with no pedestrian traffic permitted on October 4th and 5th, the likely shooting time. With vehicle movement restricted from September 30th to October 6th, that is presumably the filming plus prep time for this area.

The third location is the Plaza de Armas, shown in the photo at the top. The Plaza de Armas (“parade ground,” literally) is the square overlooking the sea found at the foot of the Castell del Papa Luna.

The Plaza de Armas has vehicle restrictions on October 1st and 2nd. The City Council says there will be a lot of movement on the streets from Plaza de Armas to the Portal Fosc. There may be more information to come.

Now, for the $25,000 Question: We know where they’re filming. What is Game of Thrones filming in Peñíscola?

Our information so far this year about Peñíscola is slim. There was a casting call for extras that specified dark-haired people, but the call asked for short-haired men. This contrasts with the Almeria casting call, which asked for long-haired men (hinting at Dothraki). The setting provided by these new locations along with the extras casting call, makes me think  Peñíscola may be standing in for a few Meereen scenes.

Thanks to Javi for pointing the way toward the Peñíscola news!

  1. Production keeps on chugging along doesn’t it?
So nice to get all these regular updates from inside sources and fan sources!
Thanks to Sue and the rest of the team and all the fans that link posts!

I would guess Meereen as well, but maybe we could get something new as well. I guess it’s also possible this could be for the limited Dorne scenes we have heard rumors about…..

  2. Sean C.,

No, that is what YOU think should happen. I don’t think they should be killed at all, an uncle doesn’t simply kill his brothers duaghters.

But we arleady disscussed this, you don’t see them as people, with emotions or feelings. This are robots to you who should always make the choice, you think is correct, who should never think twice before killing their own nieces.

  3. Mihnea,

Doran wouldn’t “simply” be killing his brother’s daughters. He told them not to attack Myrcella. They attacked Myrcella. He imprisoned them, and then offered them mercy in exchange for obedience. They took his pardon, and then murdered Myrcella, in the process putting Doran’s own son Trystane in potentially mortal peril and possibly triggering a war with the Lannisters that Doran does not want.

If Doran does not execute them, he is a bigger joke of a lord than Tytos Lannister, and has written the Sand Snakes carte blanche to do whatever they want and never face any consequences. Not to mention, the idea that he’d give them any sort of responsibilities after that is even more ridiculous, since they’ve shown they’re totally unreliable and will never follow his orders if they don’t want to.

Nowhere did I talk about him not having emotions. Among other things, he should be mad as hell. But there is only one path open to him that would preserve any sort of credibility as a ruler, and a man who has run Dorne for decades would know that.

  4. Back to the set photos, some of those locations look like quite a good aesthetic fit for the Meereen locations from Croatia.

  5. Sean C.,

What mortal peril? Who will harm Trystane? Jaime? You think he’ll harm the boy his duaghter loved? Or Kevan? You think he will risk war with Dorne? Do you think the Tyrells care?
Or Cersei perhaps? Why should she kill him? He had nothing to do with Myrcella’s murder. And Cersei has bigger problems then Trystane. You think she will try to kill him, Or Margaery, or perhaps The high sparrow, who made her do a walk of shame?
Or even Kevan, who has taken her power away.

And Doran putting the SS to use makes perfect sense, he eplains to them what plan he has, and puts them to use. Motivating them with the promise of revange against the Lannisters, for Oberyn’s death. And frankly I don’t even belive Doran cares about Myrcella. The event that happened may only accelerate him, in acting.

But of course, if a character does not do what YOU think is right, then their decision makes no ”sense”. For me Doran simply killing the SS would make no sense.
And you realy, realy take lightly the weight of a decision like that. You don’t kill your Little brothers duaghters so easy, perhaps you would understand if you had nieces.

This conversation ends here for me, I simply don’t share your opinion, nor your way of watching/understanding a story. If a story does not go the way I like it I don’t call it illogical. And neither am I angry at characters doing ”illogical” things, as I firmly belive that, mistake, is a fundamental part of being human.

  6. Sean C.,

Wars are not being declared in a spur of a moment and out of sentimental reasons. Not at least in this very moment of GOT politics where Lannisters cannot afford it and are weak and there is chaos in KL. Doran does not need to execute SS in order to prove that he is a leader. This is an vulgar simplification of a character who we expect to be clever and who has a plan. Trystane is not in danger because he was in love with Myrcella and he obviously is devastated by her death. Who will execute him? Cersei? Certainly not after her walk of shame. Jaime? Donät think so. SO there is no reason whatsoever for Dorna to kill SS. Elaria is another thing and we will have to wait and see what is her fate in the GOT world…

  7. Mihnea,

That’s why I said tried, punished or executed….
I would be shocked if they were all executed, but I would not be surprised at Ellaria being punished.

  8. dothrakian raven,

    Very well said.

Complatly agree that Ellaria might go. This might even be what will keep the SS in line. Reminding them of Doran’s power.

But like you said, Doran doesn’t have to kill his nieces to prove he’s in control.

  9. So… Meereen or Oldown would be my best guess. The Fosc Gateway looks pretty cool! I don’t know why, but these stone alleys look more like Oldtown than Meereen to me…

By the way, have you guys heard about the Girona shooting news from yesterday? El Punt Avui had a pretty comprehensive (and spoilery!) description of the scene. It was on the previous article. If it’s true, it’s pretty shocking (at least to me.) I’ll post my translation/summary here too:

As we know Jaime, the High Sparrow, Margaery and Tommen are involved. No mention of other characters, such as Lancel and Olenna, who were reported by Los Siete Reinos. There were 139 Tyrell soldiers, as well as a few dozen other extras for the city folk and the Faith Militant.

The runtime of the scene is four minutes, which may seem brief but is quite a lot if you really think about it (also, that was just part of the scene; the rest will be filmed today.) The scene is described in detail, and it is VERY SPOILERY.

It begins with the High Sparrow going down the Sept’s stairs while the people applaud him. He explains that Queen Margaery has joined them in accepting the power of the Faith. Just then, Jaime Lannister bursts into the scene, on horseback and leading an army of a hundred and forty Tyrell soldiers, and demands that the High Sparrow free Queen Margaery. Suddenly, the gates of the Great Sept open —it is Tommen Baratheon, followed by Queen Margaery and the Kingsguards, who are bearing the Faith Militant’s sigil instead of the Royal sigil. The king and queen have accepted the High Sparrow’s reformed faith, and they are acclaimed by the people. It is emphasized that this is only the first part of the scene; the rest will be filmed today, and it is expected to be a trascendental scene in which the two factions come to blows.

These are BIG spoilers, as in “TWOW-spoilers-not-many-people-predicted” big. Sure, a few did see it coming, but it’s certainly not a popular theory I’ve heard of.

  10. dothrakian raven:

This is not a matter of “sentimental reasons”. The murder of a member of the royal family is a matter of state importance, and demands a state response. I agree that the rational faction of the Lannisters would try to settle the matter, assuming they believed Doran was uninvolved, but that just reinforces my point: pacifying the Lannisters would require the execution of Ellaria and the Sand Snakes.

Doran does not need to execute SS in order to prove that he is a leader.

He needs to execute them both to avert war, if that is what he desires, and because he has to show that there are consequences for violating his pardon conditions.

Trystane is not in danger because he was in love with Myrcella and he obviously is devastated by her death. Who will execute him? Cersei? Certainly not after her walk of shame. Jaime? Donät think so.

Trystane is in danger because he is now effectively a Lannister hostage. And as far as everybody in Dorne knew at the time, Cersei was running the show in KL.

    Mihnea:

I call story developments illogical when they don’t make any sense. And there is nothing wrong with characters not acting completely rationally, so long as their actions are properly motivated and comprehensible, and the show wants their actions to be viewed in that light. That’s different from the show, for instance, presenting a character as a genius when in fact he is an idiot.

  11. Luka Nieto,

I think that, like Girona, could stand for multiple locations. Plaza de Armas to me look too much like the arena for Tyrion trial by combat to be something totally different…then, off course, there is CGI and everything can look different

  12. Davos 4 king,

My personal theory, might be completly wrong, but I find it preaty resonable.

Doran did not knew off Ellaria’s plan of killing Myrcella. But he does have a plan, most likely he is in Varys’s team, working for a Targaryan restoration, or he could work alone, but towards the same goal. Now, a peace with the Lannister worked good to him for the moment, but he never planed it to last. So while Myrcella’s death did not ruin his plan, but only made him act sooner then he would like too.

Of course him knowing of Ellaria’s plan, is very plausible. We only see a brief scene with her pledging alligience to Doran. Hell, Doran himself could have come up with this plan. This theory in particular, could explain Ellaria’s behavior too Jaime in their scene, the only scene I criticized from Dorne. But this can explain it nicely.

  13. Davos 4 king,

If clicking on the spoilers isn’t working for you, refresh the page. If it it still doesn’t work, just copy the text and paste it wherever you wish in order to read it.

    jentario,

I mean, it’s not that big. There are no deaths or anything. If you read about Margaery and the context of how she is freed, you already know half of it. The spoiler is big because it’s game-changing for the King’s Landing politics.

  14. jentario,

Cersei is powerless. And anyway, you think he will be Cersei’s first target? I don’t deny that Cersei will hate him or want to kill him, I simply find it very, hard to belive that Trystane will be her first target when she has, Margaery, high sparrow, Kevan, even Jaime, ritght there.

I expect Trystane to live at least the first half of S6. But there is no point of arguing, we are both in the dark here, we will know who was right in april.

  15. Luka Nieto,

How would Tommen get to the Sept of Baelor without anybody noticing, at a time when Jaime, the Lord Commander of the Kingsguard, is apparently planning a massive assault on it?
  16. Sean C.,

Who says nobody noticed…? It’s a surprise to us, who are watching the filming; it doesn’t mean it’s a surprise to the characters or the viewers when the show airs.

  17. jentario,

Then lets call it a miracle!

    Sean C.,

He does NOT need to execute SS. Most likely Ellaria will pay the price but then again we do not know to which extent Doran is involved in Myrcella’s death. We saw Ellaria kissing Myrcella. It will be difficult to prove SS involvement in order to be of imperial importance to execute them.

  18. Luka Nieto,

Hmmm those spoilers are quite….. spoilery.
EDIT: Spoiler coding is not working, so deleting. But I am sure this is a sham by Marge but not her King.

    Mihnea,
I suspect that Doran is not completely ignorant of the plot. Ellaria’s bizarre scene with Jaime is, otherwise, hard to explain; it’s a scene that takes place after her pardon by Doran. The chief concern was that Myrcella should not be harmed on Dornish soil; the sea is another matter. I believe that like Oberyn, Doran too has harbored ideas of revenge against the Lannisters for a very long time, since Elia and her children.

  19. dothrakian raven,

The crown does not know who comited the crime, so by killing Ellaria he can easly say he did served justice. This under the assumption that the crown will demend anything at all, Kevan has more pressing metters then Myrcella, and the Tyrells, could not care less.

But just like you said whe don’t know if Doran was involved with Ellaria or not.

  20. Kay,

Thats why I’m not so sure of Ellaria dying, Doran could easly have given the order. Especially with all of KL going to hell, and Tywin death, he could think an alliance with the Lannisters is no longer needed. Or he simply thought that they are weak right now, and in no position of affording too fight Dorne.

And that damn scene really bugged me! Ellaria’s sudden change was a bit to fast. But Doran giving Ellaria the order of killing Myrcella, or perhaps it was his plan not Ellaria’s at all. This would give some reason for Ellaria’s behavior in that scene.

  21. Mihnea,

I do not think so that Elaria will be executed by Doran. But I do not exclude it either. This remains to be seen. As for Doran’s involvement my suspicion rose when Elaria kissed Myrcella in front of everybody else. Doran is for sure very well aware what that kind of kiss can mean in a culture where poisons is the number one weapon. He would be suspicious and would have reacted if he wanted Myrcella alive. He saw the kiss and did nothing to avert its consequences.

  22. Davos 4 king,

I’m also having a problem seeing the spoilers. (Right now, I’m on a PC using Windows 8.1 with Firefox). I clicked on the “Show Spoilers” button, but when I got to Luka’s spoiler paragraph, it was a gray box. I clicked a couple of times on the box, only to get the words in a very pale yellow, still on the gray background.

  23. Mihnea,

What kind of father would send his son away to enemy hands at the same time as doing an act of war? Doran isn’t part of the plan. He has no ulterior motives in the show.

  24. There’s a reddit user ashen_due describing a scene with arya & the waif
    https://www.reddit.com/r/asoiaf/comments/3kx1og/spoilers_all_got_films_major_scene_in_girona_and/

“I was there and saw the fight, and (SPOILERS) they do have a fight on a bridge that ends with arya rolling of the side into the water. The waif uses different faces to sneak up on arya, including walking past as an old woman and then jumping her!”

This picture I found seems to confirm that. Maisie/Double is wearing the clothes she had while filming the water scene in Northern Ireland. Cardboard boxes are to cushion the fall of Arya’s stuntdouble. The theater stage they built is behind that fake wall on the left.

    https://twitter.com/Lu77_/status/643625598687006720

  25. Could it be that they’re simply filming King’s Landing coastal scenes? Girona isn’t a coastal city, after all.

  26. Mihnea,

The scene with Ellaria and Jaime didn’t seem right to me either. Doran could be behind it all. I am hoping there is a lot going on under the surface with him and we will find out what he has been planning in S6. I have believed that there is much, much more to Dorne than we have been shown to this point. Maybe Doran’s hope it to marry off Trystane to Dany. ?

  27. There’s much much more I think, in the Dornish plot that will be revelaed in the next season. Obvously, Doran when he toasted king Tommen, wasn’t happy to have Lannisters Kings, despite what he said. I think he was pissed at Ellaria more because she was messing with his plan than because she was pursuing vengeance. I think Ellarya is not afraid to die so that scene when she was crying was not because Doran threathened her with death, but because he informed her on some details of his plan and she was sorry she almost blow it up. On the other hand, I can’t fathom why his plans would include killing Myrcella with Trystane on the same ship heading for KL. That would make an hostage of him, at least, if not a corpse..

  28. Mihnea: I doubt that the SS will be executed.

Maybe Ellaria, but even here I’m not so sure.

Ellaria knows that being captured means death. However, we just saw her avoid a much less degrading death by taking an antidote to poison. That tells us that she is planning to avoid death period, never mind a type of death. If Ellaria wants to continue to avoid death, she has to flee. Ergo, she is fleeing somewhere.

    Syllogism complete!

The question now is: to where are she and the SS fleeing?

lalla: I think Ellarya is not afraid to die so that scene when she was crying was not because Doran threathened her with death

But, again: Ellaria took an antidote to avoid death. If she were not afraid of death and willing to accept execution just to kill a Lannister, then why wouldn’t she have just made that a suicide mission?

The fact that Ellaria took the antidote tells us that she plans to go on living: and that means fleeing.

  29. Luka Nieto: These are BIG spoilers, as in “TWOW-spoilers-not-many-people-predicted” big. Sure, a few did see it coming, but it’s certainly not a popular theory I’ve heard of.

But it’s also not that far off from a variety of conjectures. Given that there are so many specific ways general scenarios can unravel, “good” predictions will always differ from what actually happens in details.

(Which, of course, is to say: that’s generally what I expected, but not quite exactly what I expected!!!!! 😀 😉 )

  30. Alfador,

The “eñe” (ñ) isn’t pronunced like the “n”. Also, there are many who assume it’s basically like “ny”, phonetically… but not really —it’s goes even further. My point being, you would probably not even think of the word “penis” if someone said “peñíscola” out loud instead of you reading it 😉

    Wimsey,

Yeah, it’s not something incredibly shocking that contradicts general assumptions of what’s going to happen. But it still is a game-changer.

  31. Mihnea: That is where every one of my theory leads me, Trystane replacing Quentyn, but not is storyline from the books. Only his part in marying Dany.

But that means that Trystane and Quentyn would have zero overlap! Quentyn’s part in the story was “kill the frog, let the Prince be born.” He did, but paid spectacularly for it. And, of course, it really was an unnecessary additional story line that provided one key plot element for which there probably are only a few thousand other reasonable alternatives. (I mean,

how hard is it to find a way to have dragons escape captivity? We could come up with one per minute with little effort).

My bet is that Tyrstane’s role in largely done: he’ll be an incidental character from here on out. (It would seem a bit odd to me if he actually continued on to Kings Landing at this point: my bet is that he would have the ship turned around, and then have Jaime & Bronn sent back on their own.)

  32. Luka Nieto: Yeah, it’s not something incredibly shocking that contradicts general assumptions of what’s going to happen. But it still is a game-changer.

Well, there is nothing so unstable as a 3-sided war. It always leads, if only for a while, to a 2-sided war. The question always is, which two sides will unite and which side is the third?

Of course, there is still a big wild-card here: Cersei!

  33. Sean C.:
Back to the set photos, some of those locations look like quite a good aesthetic fit for the Meereen locations from Croatia.

I agree. I can see the Portal Fosc stand in as the entrance to the pyramid (from the inside) and thus to the dragons (Tyrion going there?). The Plaza de Armas looks pretty Meereen, too, and the Plaza Santa Maria could be another place of confrontation with the Sons of the Harpy.
Maybe it’s even Oldtown or King’s Landing. I think it’s not ornate enough for Dorne. I don’t see any of the “oriental” influences we saw in/around the Alcazar.

  34. wow after reading these king’s landing spoilers, I’m 1000% rooting for Cersei to burn down King’s Landing with 0 shame

  35. Well said Sean C.

Elaria and the SS will be in hiding and will have had an escape plan in place BEFORE they murdered Myrcella….Doran will have hunters out looking for them, but not sure about any more Dorne storyline in Dorne….Elaria and the SS will likely show up in King’s Landing. That’s the only storyline left that matters.

  36. Tootie: Elaria and the SS will likely show up in King’s Landing. That’s the only storyline left that matters.

In many ways, the Kings Landing plotline and the stories attached to it (right now, only Cersei’s, although it seems that Jaime’s story is returning there) are the least important! The stories happening at the Wall, Bravos and Meereen all will be much more important by the end of the series.

Moreover, I would be surprised if Ellaria to turn up in King’s Landing. Instead, I would think that it’s more probable that they either head towards Daeny or we learn that they’ve been in contact with Euron. Still, we obviously cannot rule out Kings Landing: perhaps they will take over some of the plot elements that other characters had there at the end of Dragons and probably throughout Winter.

  37. Wimsey,

well Cersei and Dany’s storyline will ultimately interesect because I still that Dany is the younger more beautiful queen in Cersei’s prophecy. and I really don’t see Mereen as very important in the endgame tbh

  38. Luka Nieto,

I am feeling a little smug this morning. I called it in a thread on reddit about a month ago. I think it’s an exciting development! It leaves Cersei completely isolated and cornered. Especially since it seems Jaime has allied himself to Tommen (as his Kings Guard vows would require). So who knows what she’ll do next? ???.

  39. Lisa0527,

    BURN BABY BURN 😛

It’s kind of my pet theory. Aside from the obvious ones that are pretty much confirmed already (e.g. R+L=J), Cersei burning King’s Landing (or at least the Red Keep) with wildfire is my favorite.

  40. Lisa0527,

I didn’t really interpret it as an all-out assault anyway. More of a show of force. I doubt Jaime intends to breach the Sept and kill monks.

  41. Luka Nieto,

From the talk about Jaime demanding the release of Margaery. If Tommen was also being held, he would be demanding the release of Tommen; if Tommen was not being held and was known to be there on a diplomatic venture, they would not stage a military expedition like this while he was still inside. Granted, it’s a roguh report so perhaps Jaime is also demanding the release of Tommen, but I’m just going off what the report says.

    Mihnea:
The crown does not know who comited the crime, so by killing Ellaria he can easly say he did served justice. This under the assumption that the crown will demend anything at all, Kevan has more pressing metters then Myrcella, and the Tyrells, could not care less.

But just like you said whe don’t know if Doran was involved with Ellaria or not.

Ellaria and the Sand Snakes just tried to kill Myrcella. It’s not a big leap that Ellaria and the Sand Snakes then killed Myrcella. Sure, in a court of law you’d have to produce stronger evidence that they knew/were complicit with Ellaria’s poisoning, but this isn’t a court of law. Indeed, it’s less plausible that they didn’t know (that’s assuming they even try to deny it). This is politics, not law.

The idea that Kevan, etc. would ignore the murder of a member of the royal family is farcical.

If Doran was meant to be involved, they would have shown him on the docks at the end. Beyond which, if Doran was involved, the whole setup makes no sense. Why would he send Jaime and Bronn away, and give them a valuable hostage in the bargain, if he was just planning to kill Myrcella?

  42. Gravemaster:
    Lisa0527,

Or maybe High Sparrow makes a comment about Tommen’s true parentage and that starts the conflict.

If he knew about his parentage would he still support Tommen as King? Of course, he may know, but find it useful to have such a compliant tool on the throne.

  43. Sean C.,

Could you please ignore my comments? I simpy find nothing productive in entering a conversation with you. You think I’m wrong, I think you’re wrong,
And frankly I simply don’t enjoy speaking with you. I find that we simply have no common ground from where to start building a nice disscussion.

I will simply ignore you. You will simply ignore me. I found this method to be very good, for me personally and for this site. So what do you say?

  44. My guess is “The Citadel”, the extras casting for short haired men = Maesters and their apprentices. The Plaza de Armas overlooking the water from high above gives impressive visual to the size and scope of the Citadel and the Portal Fosc and its interior tunnel are perfect for the Entrance to it. Sam always wanted to go there, so it’s a big moment for him walking through that gate into the academic world he dreamed of growing up at Horn Hill. Wonder what great European library will fill in for the Citadel’s. This is a big moment for Sam and will probably be in the final two episodes.

What would be fun for viewers and sad for Sam is the day he enters The Citadel, an alarm sounds, and he and others rush to the parapet of Armas and behold the massive Iron Fleet approaching.
  45. It says it holds musical performances there, I bet it gets great acoustics bc the way it’s built

  46. aurane waters: I still that Dany is the younger more beautiful queen in Cersei’s prophecy. and I really don’t see Mereen as very important in the endgame tbh

Indeed, that seems to be obvious to everyone but Cersei: and yet we could say that about a lot of things.

As for Meereen, that itself is not important to the endgame, but the stories set there (Daeny’s and now Tyrion’s) will be. Meereen has induced some very important character evolution in Daeny in particular that parallels the evolution of Jon’s character at the Wall. How those two in particular change is going to contribute more to the over-arching story than any other two characters’ evolutions will.

Sean C.: Why would he send Jaime and Bronn away, and give them a valuable hostage in the bargain, if he was just planning to kill Myrcella?

Well, while on the ship, Jaime and Bronn more probably are Trystane’s hostages than the other way around, unless Jaime & Bronn induce a coup early next year.

However, I agree: Doran would not have been party to this. The show has not made his motives clear yet (nor do we really know what they are on the show!), but the show also pretty plainly develops him as someone with a long-term agenda.

Mihnea: The High Sparrow most certanly knows about Tommen, but he either lacks proof, or has an ulterior motive.

The HS will have heard the rumors. After all, everyone has. However, he might not put much stock in them: after all, Stannis started them, and the High Sparrow would hold Stannis in no higher regard than he holds other nobility; indeed, given that he’s a religious fanatic, the HS would probably hold Stannis (as well as the Northerners) in lower regard than the southern nobility because, well, they are heretics/pagans/heathens/etc. as well as nobles.

  47. Sean C.:

If Doran was meant to be involved, they would have shown him on the docks at the end.Beyond which, if Doran was involved, the whole setup makes no sense. Why would he send Jaime and Bronn away, and give them a valuable hostage in the bargain, if he was just planning to kill Myrcella?

I dont know if Doran was involved and i dont expect it will change your opinion since you seems to be as much stuborn about SS execution as you are about Sansa season 5 storyline, but there is really easy answer for that.

Plausible deniability. If members of his family murdered Myrcella before his eyes in his court, Doran would be responsible and Lannisters would feel pressured to respond with force. A mysterious death on open sea outside of Dorne while Myrcella is under the protection of Jaime? Completely different matter. As you said, why would he send his only son to KL, that would be crazy, he is totaly innocent, everyone can see that…..

  48. GaiusB,

Besides, the crown can’t hurt Trystane, that will mean war with Dorne. Something that the crown can simply not afford.

And honestly, besides Cersei, I can’t see who would want to hurt Trystane. Kevan is smart, and I expect him too know better then risk war with Dorne, right now when the crown is almost dead. The Tyrell’s couldn’t care less about Myrcella.
And honestly I can’t see Jaime hurt him, not after Myrcella told him, that she loves Trystane.

And even on Cersei I’m sceptical that she will blame Trystane, who I expect to be quite in mourning, but rather she will blame Jaime, wich will further break them apart.

  49. Sean C.,
I’m new here, but why are these people personally attacking you, instead of rationally debating the storyline and characters like you are?

  50. GaiusB: A mysterious death on open sea outside of Dorne while Myrcella is under the protection of Jaime?

Huh, that is a point I had not considered: that Ellaria is responsible for Myrcella’s death would not be as obvious to the characters as it is to us. Oh, to be certain, Jaime would be certain of this, as would be Bronn and probably Trystane and Doran. However, they didn’t watch Ellaria quaff a bottle of antidote and remove poison lipstick the way that we did. So, it would be them asserting that this happened: it would all look very suspicious, but there would be no proof of anything.

    Good catch.

  51. lalla: There’s much much more I think, in the Dornish plot that will be revelaed in the next season. Obvously, Doran when he toasted king Tommen, wasn’t happy to have Lannisters Kings, despite what he said. I think he was pissed at Ellaria more because she was messing with his plan than because she was pursuing vengeance.

Agree with everything said here. I can’t fathom Doran being all A-OK with any Lannister, including Jaime, who went there in secret and was planning to actually kidnap Myrcella from under Doran’s official care before being caught and forced to admit to stuff.

  52. On the Dorne plot and on the fact that Jaime at the temple is so far away in the season: nobody entertains the idea that maybe the boat will go back to Dorne since is the closest place to look for help and the place where the assassin is? I mean, Jame went all the way to Dorne to find Myrcella and no a few miles back to kill her assassin himself?

  53. igorcarvalho,

It’s the same place. The same arches. The same stage they built for the theater, being dismantled. The same medieval scaffolding for the theater background, which will depict a painted Red Keep.

  54. tyjon: The Plaza de Armas overlooking the water from high above gives impressive visual to the size and scope of the Citadel

I agree. When I saw these photos I immediately pictured the scene where Sam arrives at the Citadel’s entry courtyard – the place he has always longed to be – and gets a runaround before he is admitted to talk to any of the Maesters.

  55. Mihnea,

    Mihnea,

Cersei will not place blame on just one person. She still holds Tyrion, Sansa, Jaime and plently of others responsible for Joffery’s death. And I doubt she will be so concerned with Tommen that she will ignore the death of her only daughter. She’s shown time and again that her priority is her children, the rest of the wor’d can go to hell as far as she’s concerned. It also is another step in the prophecy. She was distressed about Myrcella as soon as she left. She was willing to go to war with the Martells purely over the necklace sent in the snakes mouth, the only reason Jaime even went was prevent that, and she was able to want to go to war over the slightest HINT of a threat, while also being worried about Tommen and making a deal with LF for Sansa’s head.

She is going to rage, and she still has a decent amount of power at the minute (though likely not for much longer) and Kevan CANNOT ignore the death of a royal family matter LET ALONE THE HEIR TO THE THRONE. Lannisters do not react well to threats on their family let alone murder. And half the conflict in the show has been reactionary and impulsive. Part of the reason why the war started was Tywin marching with his army because Tyrion had been taken captive. Robert’s Rebellion started because Lyanna had been taken, and then Rickard and Brandon killed. Robb marched because Ned had been arrested! Any doubt of the Martells involvement is erased by the sending of the necklace and the fact that Jaime, both head of the KG AND a royal family member saw an attack on her, that’s more than enough to demand their arrest (though the eventual trial could pan out either way tbh) and Westeros would not blame the Lannisters for marching on Dorne.

Now as for Doran himself, that’s different. No matter what his involvement is, if he wants to hold off on open conflict with the throne he needs to temporarily pacify them. If he ordered it, he either needs to be ready for open conflict or 1 send them away and say they escaped 2 hold them captive and delay or give the pretense of a trail. If he didn’t order it, then it depends on whether it works to his advantage or not. If it does then he’s made an advancement that he doesn’t have to take direct blame for. If not, then he will be angry, possibly enough to sentence them. If he’s been entirely legit however, then he has to sentence them to death, they murdered a child, a member of the royal family, who was heir to the throne, who was under their protection, causing a conflict and potentially endangering the whole of Dorne, and also forever damaging the family name. Just look how past events are spoken of..

As for Trystane we already have a pretty good example with the same characters, similar settings etc, as it comes to a similar situation with controlled conditions Sansa is the closest you’ll find.

Ned denied the Kings legitmacy and she was taken hostage having being already in their hands just for that. And Ned REVOKED that and she was still kept hostage. She was in danger the entire time she was there and Sansa was clever enough to say the right things etc, she never did anything against the Lannisters herself. Trystane might receive better treatment depending on what they think his involvement is, the fact that he’s a man, that he’s heir (but again Sansa to KG was at one point not just heir but rightfully Lady of Winterfell after Robb’s death), how subservient and amiable he is etc. but no matter what he’s a hostage – whether he receives treatment closer to Theon under Ned or Sansa in KG remains to be seen. Plus there’s the fact that the Martells supposed loyalty and the Lannisters partnership with them relied SOLELY on the marriage – which is now out the window. There is now even more bad blood between the families and the Lannisters now have few reasons to avoid conflict woth them aside from a need for allies, and they have to respond – if they don’t the rest of westeros is ALREADY circling and will smell blood in the water and they are as good as dead. The Tyrells will also be honor bound to respond AND the faith miliant (unless the plan to kill Tommen too due to the bastard claims).

So I guess the long-winded explantion cuts down to – you both make good points, but either way it is too irrational and responsible for no response from either side (also, even if the claims of murder are denied there is more than enough evidence to demand a trail, as for the trial westeros doesn’t really demand too much evidence and it can be fabricated, see tyrion, and really depends on who is judging, if it’s in westeros they definitely will be charged guilty, but of they do a trial by combat or the faith gets involved it could play out differently).
