Sean Bean hosts Reddit AMA: Game of Thrones highlights

250px-EddardStarkEarlier today, Sean Bean hosted a Reddit AMA. Among other topics, he was asked plenty of questions about Game of Thrones.

We’ve compiled some of the highlights relating to his role as our dear departed Ned Stark. The last one is a killer.

Bilbos-Tardis: What’s a role that you wished you had for longer?

I guess Ned Stark!

AxeApollo: Why did you not teach Jon Snow anything?

HAHAHAHAH!

Because he’s not mine!

Little bastard!

shivan21: Were you shocked when you were beheaded?

Yes.

Yeah.

I mean, I knew it was coming, you know?

But when I read it, you know, it just comes out of the blue and was a nasty shock. Especially after Ned Stark thought he’d got some agreement between Joffrey and the various factions, and for them to renege on that deal was pretty shocking.

The scene was shot in Malta, in this big square in Malta, I think they built it, like a big public square, and it was good, it was weird, you know? Because they made a cast of my head with hair on it, I’ve got some pictures of me holding my head. And it was fun. I don’t know, you kind of just have to imagine what it’s like to have your head chopped off, Ann Boleyn and how she must have felt. But it was the manner in which it was done, it was all the more tragic for that.

Angrygoat44: Favorite moment while filming Game of Thrones?

There was a scene with Bran near the tree – that legendary kind of family tree of the Starks, near the pool of water, and I enjoyed that scene. I enjoyed the scenes with Lena as well. She’s great fun.

GoonSquad44: If you were going to war, would you rather take Robert Baratheon or Aragorn with you into battle?

Robert Baratheon. He’s from Yorkshire. That’s why. Why not Aragorn? If Robert got ahold of you, he’d crush you. You’d be careful not to get caught.

Zaxtas: Not fat Robert though right? I mean he probably has a pretty good body slam but that’s about it

HAHAHAHA!

exactly.

almathden: Mr Bean, how much did you know about Game of Thrones before signing on? Did you know much about Ned’s character?

I wasn’t familiar with it really, I’d heard of the writer and his books, but it was kind of a new experience for me. And I read the books, and I guess that was it, really.

dfloyd13: How do you feel about not having a part in Game of Thrones for a little longer? Do you ever visit the filming crew and hang around? Who are you friends with the most from the GoT cast?

I guess Mark Addy, I see him on occasions. It’s a funny job actually, because you’re all thrown together for an intense period of time, and then everybody goes home, it’s a strange business in that way. But we always bump into each other from various productions, on the same kind of circuit.

Thoopa: Would you rather fight 100 Tyrion-sized Mountains or 1 Mountain-sized Tyrion?

The big one. The mountain-sized Tyrion.

karmanaut: You seem to love hinting about Jon Snow’s parentage. What is the most cryptic hint you can give us right now about his parents?

I don’t know?!

I mean, how am I supposed to know? Does anybody know? I don’t think he’s mine.

ManagerMurrayHewitt: Would you rather apologize to Frodo or actually have that conversation with Jon Snow?

I did apologize to Frodo, didn’t I? Or I told somebody to tell him I was sorry. And fuck Jon Snow.

Head over to Reddit to read the full AMA. There’s plenty of insightful and hilarious stuff discussed, including Sean’s roles in Sharpe’s RiflesGoldeneye, and The Lord of the Rings. It’s definitely worth a read.

  1. Oh, my God. I had no idea Sean Bean was this hilarious. Shame on me! LOVE his responses about Jon Snow, of course. Glad he’s in on the joke even if he doesn’t really know the truth.

  2. Such a nice bloke.

Hope no one understimates just how important he was for setting GoT onto the road to the success it has had. His influence on that first series was immense.

  3. Yep, I thought I loved it when the Hound said, “Fuck the King.” I literally just laughed out loud when I read Sean Bean saying, “And fuck Jon Snow.”

  4. The entire AMA is hilarious. He talks about food a lot. He is a big fan of Hendersons Relish.

    Love his comments about Jon.

  5. They better get Neddy back in some flashbacks or somethin’.

Isn’t it true that Ned has been mentioned in every single episode of GOT since his death?
It’s nice to have such a lasting legacy.

  6. Fun Q&A/ AMA!
Nice to see his lighter side come out…

I’m just happy I will get to watch him in his new series Legends where he is not killed off quickly. Although if the show gets cancelled in its first season it would be like killing yet another Sean Bean character far too early… sigh.

  7. There was a scene with Bran near the tree – that legendary kind of family tree of the Starks, near the pool of water, and I enjoyed that scene.

Anybody know which scene he is talking about here? I don’t remember anything of the sort. – Or is he talking about the one with Osha and Hodor? – I guess that’s is possible, even though he wasn’t involved in it.

  8. Abyss: Anybody know which scene he is talking about here? I don’t remember anything of the sort. – Or is he talking about the one with Osha and Hodor? – I guess that’s is possible, even though he wasn’t involved in it.

Isaac said not long ago there was an unaired scene featuring himself and Bean under the weirwood tree at Winterfell. He speculated it might be used as a flashback one day (via his powers).

Sounds like the scene Bean describes here.

  9. Thank you for the highlights! I am a rather big fan of his 🙂

I want to see what Ry has to say about THIS SHIT!

Hey you there, Mine is the Furry: so apparently he’d take your boy Bobby with him over Strider LOL. I renounce Sean Bean!!!

PS. Will forgive him in a sec. (Be right back all fangirling over the gentleman actor once I cry my heart out)

  10. Valaquen,

if hope they also just happen to have unaired footage of the person who ordered Bran’s assassination… ordering it so that can be a flashback too

  11. Valaquen,

Ah, thanks for the answer. Would be cool to see that scene in a flashback. Because of the fact that it was filmed years ago, it would make for a nice little piece of continuity when it comes to Brans look.

  12. Valaquen: Isaac said not long ago there was an unaired scene featuring himself and Bean under the weirwood tree at Winterfell. He speculated it might be used as a flashback one day (via his powers).

Sounds like the scene Bean describes here.

Wow. Would love to actually see that scene! [crossing fingers]

  13. The scene with Bran near the heart tree is probably going to be shown next year. They already showed a shot from it (Ned sharpening his sword) in Bran’s vision from S4E2. You can see that this shot was not in of the scene where Ned was near the Heart Tree in the pilot:

  14. jentario,

Yeah I’ve been trying to find something a little more official than a commercial tour site. They’re not actually saying where they get those dates, though I think they do make sense as filming dates. That puts Split before the other Croatian locations.

  15. Just saw the last minute of a Sean Bean interview on MSNBC. Dude’s utterly charming… anchorwoman fanning her cheeks, all flustered in love via satellite.

And I just noticed the “jump to and always support the bottom,” feature. I DIG IT 🙂

  16. Did you see the first episode of Legends? It is awful. Sean Bean is great but the writing, man… Not even Bean’s great acting acting can save that. It’s a shame cause I can’t get enough of him.
