The North Remembers: September 2011

Raven LogoLet’s take a gander at September three years ago, and see what our community of Game of Thrones enthusiasts was up to then.

  • Season two was teased by the logo accompanied by a whisper of “The night is dark and full of terrors”. You can still watch it here.
  • Game of Thrones won Best Title Design at the Creative Arts Emmys. The first Emmy Award!Β The big one came of course a few days later when Peter Dinklage won an Emmy for Best Supporting Actor! What a great recognition for the show.
  • Neil Marshall was added as a director (what a move!), joining Alan Taylor, Alik Sakharov, David Petrarca, and David Nutter.
  • Season two casting continued, after some hints from George we found out Rorge was to be played by Andy Backwith, and Biter by Gerard Jordan. We also figured out that Anthony Morris was to play Tickler, and later Fintan McKeown was cast as Amory Lorch. Ian Whyte stepped into Gregor Clegane’s shoes for S2. Steven Cole was cast at Kovarro. Finally, our intrepid Rabbit found out Tony Way was going to play Dontos Hollard.
  • We were still figuring out what role Oona Chaplin was supposed to play exactly.
  • In mid-September a powerful storm interrupted the shoot at Ballintoy, where the scenes in Renly’s camp were shot.Β Much like these days, the prep in Dubrovnik was in full swing and then started in the third week of September, making the locals excited. Both King’s Landing scenes and Dany’s scenes in Qarth were shot there. It’s been three years already. At the end of the month the “Blackwater” episode started filming.

  1. We were still figuring out what role Oona Chaplin was supposed to play exactly.

I think many of us are still in the process of figuring that one out πŸ˜‰
A bit of a pity really, because Oona could have been a much bigger asset to the show as a different character or with improved writing.

PS: Marko, now that you can’t link to the old posts anymore these have lost a bit of their feathers, but I for one am happy you continue to Remember.

  2. Steven Cole as Kovarro, why has he been forgotten by those in charge. Ian Whyte as Gregor, probably best forgotten. Nothing against the man but he didn’t have the look for the role. Kinda like casting Jack Gleeson as Olenna. Okay maybe not that bad, but in either case the actor could never make it work through no fault of their own.

  3. Abyss,

Yes. She is stubborn that way. She has issues with the mods here. I say we all go there and plead for her to come here. Cumsprite and I tried before but maybe with a bunch of us she will change her mind.

  4. Mine is the Furry,

I don’t know about pleading, but I will asked nicely. πŸ˜‰ Then again, I made the decision not to post on the other site again, but if that’s what it takes to bring one of the old ones back to fold, I will make an exception.

  5. OK that’s two. We need more volunteers. Who else is willing to go to WiC and ask KG to join us? We should all go at the same time.

  6. OT: Best non-news I have not read in many moons. According to GRRM’s website, he doesn’t have a major engagement to attend until early April 2015 (a sci-fi con in WA). I’m sure there will be minor distractions, but we can optimistically assume (fingers-crossed) that this major chunk of time will be dedicated to, shall I dare say, frosty, blustery thoughts… πŸ™‚ He doesn’t even post on his blog that often anymore. Hopefully his recent successful euro-ventures have inspired him…

    [always cautiously optimistic]
