Nathalie Emmanuel teases new interactions in Game of Thrones season 6

Nathalie

Digital Spy spoke with Nathalie Emmanuel today about Game of Thrones, working with Peter Dinklage, spoilers, and more. The conversation steered toward season 6 and the actress dropped this teasing hint about the season to come:

I think the fans are going to suddenly be seeing even more characters… interacting with characters they haven’t seen them interact with before. We had a bit of that in the last season, but it kicks up a bit more this season so it’s pretty exciting.

As for her co-star Dinklage, Emmanuel says, “He is incredible,” and is one of her favorites on the show.

As for spoilers, she admits she may share a few with her mum or sister, but she is tight-lipped and won’t share the secrets of the show.

Check out the entire interview below:

Well, readers, who do you think will be interacting that hasn’t before, in season 6?

  1. It’s always great when characters who have never met interact, so I’m looking forward to it.

    Davos and Sansa/Rickon maybe?

  2. Well, considering the source, I’m going to go out on a limb and guess she’s talking about the Essos crew, not one of the other locales, suggesting that by season’s end, they actually arrive in Westeros! Maybe I’m going overboard, but considering there’s only a few more seasons, it’s not beyond reasoning that Dany would finally arrive in some part of the continent she’s been moving towards since season 1. Landing in Dorne first, maybe? That would give the area some much needed relevance.

  3. The North obviously comes to mind…
    Theon/Davos
    Sansa/Davos
    Sansa/Osha
    Sansa/Rickon

    maybe even…

    Sansa/Jon?

And of course Vale lords with Northerners.

Best of all would be *Baelish* with some of the Northerners 🙂 I don’t think his usual swarm will work there.

In the Riverlands we might get Jamie/Blackfish and/or Brienne/Blackfish/Pod

In KL any of the following are *possible*

Kevan/Olenna (seems most likely and also most fun!)
    Jamie/Kevan
    Jamie/High Septon

and of course Arya/Sam in Braavos.

  4. I wonder what will the teasers be like this year. I hope they’re not planning to do that godawful Sight again.

I don’t see that that follows at all. All of the actors get the full scripts, and Emmanuel is just asked about the show in general.

It also, in general, really does not feel like the show is setting up to make that jump next year — Season 5’s ending for the Slaver’s Bay plots seems more like the show hunkering down for the foreseeable future. I think it’s a reasonable prospect that next season will end with them leaving or making the decision to leave, to actually arriving there and interacting with other characters seems far less likely.

  6. Sean C.,

Precisely. And except for Tyrion and Varys with Grey Worm there’s not much room for new character interactions in Essos anyway.

  7. Nathalie Emmanuel teases something.. because.. heck.. There’s nothing interesting to tell about her character.. If she kicks the bucket this season, I’ll jump for joy. No trolling, but I’ve seen some fan theories that turn the table on Missandei’s loyalties. Which may be why the continuing NoNutzLoveStory keeps going for now, when there’s no narrative purpose yet.

  8. Ser Oromis Locke,

Missandei in the books is like ten years old. The likelihood of her loyalties being a major plot point is rather remote. And there’s nothing to suggest that either the book or show version is anything other than what she seems. The plot with her and Grey Worm is a means of giving the actors something to do, and fleshing out the characters a bit (particularly as, in Missandei’s case, aging her up has rendered so much of her book characterization unworkable).

  9. The Sand Snakes and Ilyn Payne. 😉

    Arya and Sam.

    Little Sam and Real Time.

    Rickon and the Winterfell gang.

    Wun Wun and the Mountain.

  10. Sean C.: The plot with her and Grey Worm is a means of giving the actors something to do

heh, they don’t write stuff just to give actors things to do! The real purpose is to humanize the people for whom Daenyrs is fighting. Grey Worm and Missandei show us the human cost of slavery.

As for which characters will be interacting, well, at this point the plotlines and storylines have to start merging. It’s possible that Arya will encounter Daeny & Retinue this year if Daeny gets far enough West. I suppose that it’s remotely possible that Jaime head’s east after the SS (if the SS go east and he pursues them: perhaps their goal is to reach Daeny now). It’s also possible that Yara will turn up out there, too.

If Ramsay goes to the wall in pursuit of Sansa & Reek, then we might get some interaction with Jon & Ramsay , whereas Sansa might end up interacting with Osha if she finds Rickon. (Brangorn might be key in guiding Sansa there.) And, of course, as Brienne & Pod probably are gong to be pursuing Sansa, they could end up either at the Wall (if they assume that is a sensible destination) or with the Umbers or who knows where else.

Not knowing the story makes the guessing really tough: if we had a better idea of how the characters are going to be evolving/tested/challenged this year, then it would be a little easier to guess what the plotlines might be.

  11. Ser Alliser and Ramsay
    Theon and Brienne
    Jaime and Walder Frey
    Yara and Sam
    Melisandre and Tormund

  12. An Umber’s Axe and Ramsey’s face
    Ser Pounce and Ghost
That White Walker baby and Baby Sam both stuck in time forever as babies
    Hodor and Wun Wun

That’s all the joke ones I could come up with. I am bad at this.

  13. I’ll stomach D & D’s fan fiction just as long as they cease with Missendei and Grey Worm’s romantic relationship at once!!!

Please…..I beg of thee….no more awkward scenes between those two characters…….I can’t take any more

  14. Pigeon

    Little Sam and Real Time.

Haha indeed! I can’t decide if Little Sam’s developmental standstill is meant to be evidence of The Wall being magical, or the repercussions of consanguineous reproduction.

  15. Al Swearengen,

Why don’t you find a new hobby. You must lead a pretty sad life to be hanging around here all the time when it is clear that you don’t like the show (any more).

I only wish I had enough time to spend on fansites of shows I don’t enjoy.

  16. Jon and Arya

Hope everyone is psychologically ready for hot and steamy Maisie on Kit action as D&D return to the author’s original vision.

Should make Al happy, at least.

  17. Cumsprite:

Don’t forget Tyrion as part of a love triangle. We could have t-shirts that say TeamJon or TeamImp.

    That was terrible. Sorry.

  18. Al Swearengen,

Come on, Al, there are plenty of creative options for them. They could take oral to a new level in Essos. If they make it to Westeros, maybe they’ll run into Qyburn, who could build them a suitable strap-on. Maybe they’ll call it Wicked Sister. Knowing Qyburn though, he may have means of in-vitro that could have potential as well.

There are endless possbilities with Qyburn.

  20. Cumsprite,

If they’re doing that plot, it will be criminal if they don’t capture Maisie’s initial reaction to getting that script with a video camera.

Wimsey: heh, they don’t write stuff just to give actors things to do!

Hence, the second part of the sentence: fleshing out the supporting cast of Dany’s world, which is important to give the whole setting some weight. But giving the actors something to do is a meaningful consideration; the writers have admitted as much, e.g., putting Tywin in Arya’s story in Harrenhal, or all those extra Queen of Thorns scenes in season 3.

  21. Sean C.: But giving the actors something to do is a meaningful consideration; the writers have admitted as much, e.g., putting Tywin in Arya’s story in Harrenhal, or all those extra Queen of Thorns scenes in season 3.

That is quite a bit different: that was taking advantage of a resource rather than providing someone with something to do!

  22. Wimsey,

No, in both cases the writers stated that one of the main motivators was because actors like Dance and Rigg weren’t going to sign up/remain if the role wasn’t larger.

Emmanuel and Anderson don’t have that kind of pull, obviously, but the show does try to service all its castmembers with at least a few scenes a year of “real acting” where they’re the focus. Which is sensible, anyway; it’s a waste to have them standing around like props.

  23. having characters crossing paths could work out to be a great thing, or it can become a colossal failure. i hope for the former…and whats the deal with the bull ring shes rockin? never cared for that look. on either side of the nose it looks official, in the middle, it looks like u should be on the pasture

  24. Dr. Jones Jr.: Well, considering the source, I’m going to go out on a limb and guess she’s talking about the Essos crew, not one of the other locales, suggesting that by season’s end, they actually arrive in Westeros!

Yes, I also believe she is talking about the Essos crew and I posted the same in the other thread. But I think rather than they arriving in Westeros by season’s end, some more Westerosi will arrive there. Like some Dornish people with some guests. 😉 Another possibility is of course, Arya getting together with them.

  25. If she’s talking about the Meereen storyline, then there’s always Arya. We know Arya links up with the mummers’ troupe this season, and the leaked audition video for the Meereenese red priestess has her mentioning bringing mummers to Meereen, so…

  26. Pigeon,

    “Little Sam and Real Time”

Hahaha! That’s really something I’m intrigue to find out: if they made him look his age. It’ll be cool if they paid detail to that. 🙂

  27. The Hound and Ser Robert Strong.
    Theon and Brienne.
Robin Arryn and the outside of the Vale.

  28. Al Swearengen,

If I remember correctly book Missandei had a couple of brothers in the Unsullied. I thought perhaps her having a friendship with Grey Worm was to have her interact with one of the Unsullied as her brothers have not been included in the screen adaptation.

  29. Al Swearengen,

I totally can relate with u on that, it’s gag inducing! You’re in denial if u think that’s gonna stop anytime soon. It’s the both of them with tyrion and varys at the end of the season. Hell, we might get another wedding! It would be called the swordless wedding!

  30. Angela: Don’t forget Tyrion as part of a love triangle. We could have t-shirts that say TeamJon or TeamImp.

    That was terrible. Sorry.

The worst is Jon-Arya-Tyrion love triangle was part of first Martin’s plans…

  31. Mr. Morden:
If she’s talking about the Meereen storyline, then there’s always Arya.We know Arya links up with the mummers’ troupe this season, and the leaked audition video for the Meereenese red priestess has her mentioning bringing mummers to Meereen, so…

That’s an interesting thought. I’d love to see it happen. And then, she can warg a dragon!! And then – while I’m wishing – I’d like a pony. 😉

I do think that it’s time that more characters rearranged themselves to coagulate in plot hot-spots…GRRM said himself that the story was going to do so, so Emmanuel isn’t telling us anything we didn’t already know, sadly.

So I’ll jump on the spec-train, and say possible match-ups are:

-Tyrion and The Bottom of a Wine Glass
    -Cersei and Death
-Bran and A Short History of Humankind
-Ghost and A Leg to Hump

  32. I seriously hate the trend among entertainment “reporters” (pretty common also among sports reporters too) of asking interviewees for a comment on their own opinions instead of posing a direct question. I mean, what kind of a question is “what do you think about working with Peter Dinklage…because he’s amazing, you know?

What are the actors supposed to answer? “No, you know what? That is one of the biggest missconceptions… he’s an awful human being and a lazy actor who do not deserve all the accolades!??”

I’ve seen John Bradley, Liam Cunningham and Kit Harignton make fun of such questions, but really how tiring it must be…

Rant over… sorry! Happy Sunday everybody.

  33. Aaronia: Well, now that I think of it, baby Sam and baby White Walker are actually siblings, as both are Craster’s sons.

Yes. They can relate because they will never age.

SlayerNina: The worst is Jon-Arya-Tyrion love triangle was part of first Martin’s plans…

I am very glad that it never happened.

  34. Al Swearengen,

I agree! Bad choice by D&D to waste screen time with the Missendei and Grey Worm’s romantic aspect.

I really wish they would have thought it through a little more and if they wanted to give the beautiful and talented Nathalie more screen time, why not have an awkward type romance between Missendei and Danny?

It has been a long time since I read the books but wasn’t there some “under-the-sheets” type lesbian stuff with them anyway?

  35. SlayerNina,

What does she know of politics….?

I nice love story about 2 slaves, who probaly never tought to ever know love, is quite better.

But i forgot, today we hate love stories, for some reason

  36. Mihnea,

    My bad!

Who was it? Her Dothraki handmaidens? I know some of her female servants where being sexual with her. Just meant to say why couldn’t D&D transfer that role to Nathalie’s character.

  37. Arthur,

    Yup her handmaid

The point is of giving Missandei some scenes where she can have her own story. Making her and Dany lovers, would turn this in Dany’s story, not Missandei’s.
Making a Grey Worm/Missandei in a couple is also good, as it gives GW a story aswell. So you don’t need to make a separate story, for him too.

Also, come on…. all of this takes less then 5 min, on-screen.

  38. Gravemaster:
I wonder what will the teasers be like this year. I hope they’re not planning to do that godawful Sight again.

HBO promos for this show has been terrible, haven’t they?

  39. I really believe Bran is going to be key in bringing a lot of these actors together, especially up North. Everyone speculates Jon/Bran scenes, but Sansa is (supposedly) in the North and is a true Stark. He will reach her, and I’m hoping what she does next is in part influenced by Bran.

Plus the show gave her information that I believe the books haven’t –
    1) Bran and Rickon are alive
    2) Jon is (was) Lord Commander

I know it seems like a fairy tale to get any Stark reunion, but I do think the chances of Bran communicating with Sansa are high. The last season made a huge show of emphasizing Sansa as a Stark, which even the books haven’t. “I am Sansa Stark of Winterfell.” The wedding by the godswood.

If Melisandre brings Jon back, maybe it’s with her that he goes to Winterfell – she sees the banners come down – and Sansa or Rickon are there?

  40. The only interactions I want are between the sand snakes and a cliff… Off-camera… Between seasons.

  41. I actually think Missandei and GW acted those scenes beautifully. Sure the writing is tedious most of the time, but most of what those two are doing is amazing. I find their arc refreshing, especially when there is rape and murder and piss and shit all over the place.

And I really wish people here would stop attacking those who dislike certain things about the show. The show, like the books, is far from perfect and to attempt to dissuade someone from not contributing here because they see things differently is just shitty. Dislike someone’s negativity? Then just ignore them.

Seems like those who bitch about someone else’s negative attitude need to deal with their own insecurities and lack of confidence with their own thoughts/ideas. As if their negativity will seep into their own idyllic happy dream of all things ASoIaF and GoT. Really? Get off your high horses. Two sides, bitches.

  42. And may I also say that all the redirects I get from visiting this site is making my vag ache. I find myself in the fucking Google Play store more than reading the threads. Use this feedback or not. *shrugs*

  43. Nadia: I know it seems like a fairy tale to get any Stark reunion, but I do think the chances of Bran communicating with Sansa are high.

At this point, that is my bet for how Sansa gets to Rickon. Otherwise, it’s searching for a needle in a hay-stack. Sure, it’s a bit Deus ex Machina: but, hey, we’ve got a real god in a tree. So, why not?

Nadia: If Melisandre brings Jon back, maybe it’s with her that he goes to Winterfell – she sees the banners come down – and Sansa or Rickon are there?

I still think it possible that she’ll see Bolton banners burning by the Wall. As you note, Sansa knows that Jon is Lord Commander: and it was Ramsay who told her that. Moreover, we have good reason to think that this might happen in the books. Her walking the walls of Winterfell would then happen on a separate occasion. It would hardly be inconsistent with the nature of visions in stories like this: Mel has combined two future truths (burning banners and herself in Winterfell) with present actions (Stannis trying to take Winterfell from the Boltons) and made a simple but incorrect inference.

  44. Mihnea: But i forgot, today we hate love stories, for some reason

heh, I was no fan of the show Friends, but they did have one classic scene where two of the male characters are talking about Lord of the Rings and how obsessed they were by it in their teens. The third male character has no idea what they are discussing. The erstwhile LotR fans somewhat obnoxiously ask the non-reader what he was doing as a teenager. He replies: “having sex with girls.” The conversation stops there.

And that provides the answer to your unasked question!

  45. Wimsey,

I had my paperback copy of the Silmarillion propped on the head of the chick I was hitting from behind. Had her call me Melkor, as well.

  46. Mihnea,

She doesn’t know about politics, but she does know about customes and heritage… And it seems Dany’s only advisor were Jorah and Barristan (and yet I don’t understand how two knights of the Seven Kingdoms knew such things, not Dany who was living there, but…)

And people are not against love stories, but against cheese love Twilight stories… Specially when they’re just made up to please teen target.

  47. Ser Matt the Sullen,

The only interactions I want are between the sand snakes and a cliff… Off-camera… Between seasons.

Hey! I want more SS, just better writing (though the latter scenes were good) for the actors this coming season, especially when Doran gets word and the ensuing consequences.

Can Spanish fans living in/near Girona make a quick photo tour of all the sites before they are closed off and post them so we can decipher what location goes with which actor’s story arc.

  48. SlayerNina: And people are not against love stories, but against cheese love Twilight stories… Specially when they’re just made up to please teen target.

But there really isn’t a “teen target” here: these series are aimed at 30+ crowd. After all, those are the people who can afford HBO. (Teens living in households that can afford HBO often are not going to be able to watch these series, and although the series is popular among college students, the proportion who watch and are paying for it is small: either they are groups of people watching one subscription, or they are pirating the show.)

tyjon: Hey! I want more SS, just better writing (though the latter scenes were good) for the actors this coming season, especially when Doran gets word and the ensuing consequences.

My question is, of who’s storyline will the SS be part this year? Jaime’s again?

  49. Jeb,

I would bet on Brienne/someone ( Rickon? ) given that Brienne seems to magically find everyone she wants (Stannis, Arya, Sansa) by chance, on a continent large as Africa.

That and the fact that she still has nothing to do from her book story, with no LSH, rorge and biter are dead, and so on.

  50. Davos / Rickon I’m almost positive. Somebody needs to find that boy and it won’t be any characters that interacted with him before. They are too busy staying alive or being dead.

    Hodor’s Bastard,

Lol. You had me at strap on!
