With the start of filming for Game of Thrones season 6 fast approaching, Making Game of Thrones has published a short interview feature in the post-San Diego Comic-Con hype.

After the panel discussion at Comic-Con, the cast members opened up to MGoT about envying other actors/actresses their scenes, and gave some small teases about season 6. Although some had not read the scripts yet, others gave away some fruity details.

Conleth Hill kept it short and sweet, describing his season 6 material as simply “amazing”. He also mentioned that as much as he enjoys his own scenes, he also loves watching everyone else:

I’m very happy with what I have to do and I know that’s not a great soundbite or a sexy answer. I love reading the script and seeing what happens to everyone else, I love our kids started as kids and are now young adults and wonderful people and brilliant actors, so I love watching everybody else.

John Bradley echoed Conleth’s sentiment, as well as lamenting that Sam was not present at the Hardhome sequence:

You know in those moments, those huge moments that are going to be so memorable and spoken about, it would’ve been nice to be involved. For perfectly justifiable narrative reasons I wasn’t, but I would’ve liked to have been there. I think it’s a wonderful opportunity for an actor to really get an impression of how their character would react to extreme circumstances.

He also assured MGoT that season 6 will be “bursting with tiny details”.

Apart from wishing she could play Drogon in a performance clearly inspired by Benedict Cumberbatch’s Smaug, Natalie Dormer had the following to say about her season 6 scripts:

I haven’t read them yet. I got them [Thursday] night. On the long-haul flight home I can sit and power through them. There will be no entertainment system switched on on that airplane, I will be reading five GoT scripts.

So, Margaery will likely be in five episodes? Interesting.

Maisie Williams and Carice van Houten both cited the same reason for not yet reading the scripts – they were afraid of giving away something at the Comic-Con panel. They also shared their appreciation of Cersei’s season 5 scenes.

  1. Conleth was definitely my favourite SDCC panel guest. He seems like a lot of fun. Liam too, particularly on Conan.

In completely superficial news, I loved Maisie’s outfit. And Natalie’s laugh….

  2. I understand John, I’d have loved to see Sam there… but I’m happy he wasn’t in the middle of that carnage. too!
And news about the scripts are simply exciting… Maisie and Carice have been very wise, in my opinion!

  3. Sounds dangerous to hand scripts out just as they head out on a long flight to San Diego. Let’s hope no one leaves their scripts behind in the hotel room!

  4. Doesn’t Natalie Dormers comment about the five scripts just mean that there are five different scripts, and not a reference to the number of episodes she is in? I remember reading somewhere that the writers always write a few scripts that differ a bit.

  5. I believe one of the actors had previously stated they usually receive scripts for episodes 1-6 in one batch then 7-10 later on. Maybe she is in 5 of the first 6 episodes?

  6. In one of the interviews from Comic Con someone mentioned that half of the scripts are given out at once and then the other half later on. So they probably only got the first half.

  7. So, as far as we know Season 6 is:

    “Mystery” (Murray)
    “Amazing” (Hill)
    “Rich. Bursting with ideas.” (Bradley)
    “Five scripts” (Dormer)
    “Hard to not spoil” (Williams)
“Zero, afraid to spoil” (Van Houten)
    “Unpredictable” (Allen)

  8. Ravyn: Sounds dangerous to hand scripts out just as they head out on a long flight to San Diego. Let’s hope no one leaves their scripts behind in the hotel room!

I think they are digital scripts only, but that makes me want to be a hacker.

Murray’s one-word descriptor of the Season 6 scripts: “I haven’t received them so, nonexistent. Mystery, would be a good word. We don’t do hard copies anymore because of security but I think they’re on their way.”

So, Margaery will likely be in five episodes? Interesting.

Even though she said she’d be reading five scripts, I’m not sure that equates to being in five episodes. Someone asked during the main GoT panel about whether actors get full scripts or just the parts they are in, and the producer said they all got full scripts but not all read them. So I’m thinking Natalie might have gotten all of the scripts they’ve distributed to actors so far, whether she’s in them all or not. And I definitely got the impression that they don’t yet have all of the scripts, although I’m not sure why GeekFurious thinks they have exactly six.

Bradley’s one word to describe the Season 6 scripts: “Rich. Bursting with ideas. Game of Thrones has always been bursting with tiny details, and the first few scripts we’ve received are absolutely following that trend.”

  9. Indila: Doesn’t Natalie Dormers comment about the five scripts just mean that there are five different scripts, and not a reference to the number of episodes she is in?

The cast mentioned that for Season 5, they were initially handed the first 6 scripts, then the last 4. So it could be 6+4 this season again, or 5+5. My impression is that they were given 5 scripts and Natalie was going to read those, not that she is in 5 episodes so far.

Pigeon: Conleth was definitely my favourite SDCC panel guest. He seems like a lot of fun.

Yeah, mine too. He should be invited more. On the other hand, Alfie Allen didn’t seem all that enthused to be there.

    Fedejru,
All those adjectives are very exciting. All different, so not coached.

  10. As far as Natalie’s comment, everybody gets all the scripts (though not all read them). It can allow them to follow the whole narrative, if they choose, and they do full read-throughs anyway, so they wouldn’t keep any secrets.

  11. Does Bradley’s comment suggest early episodes with a lot of buildup rather than highly dramatic moments?

  12. This bit from Alfie in the above-linked MakingofGameofThrones interview is great btw:

“Alfie Allen would’ve been happy playing out a certain sensual-but-deadly scene in Dorne.
“Probably Bronn in the prison scene, that would’ve been alright,” Allen said with a wink. “Even though he nearly dies, he definitely has a good view while he’s going.”

  13. LordDavos,

It suggests to me that SAM’S storyline will have some detailed worldbuilding in the first few episodes. Which makes sense to me because Bradley would be paying particular attention to and referring to his character’s story. Sam will be in a place away from the Wall, and where we, the audience, have never been. The Tarly castle? The Citadel? Not all the other stories would need that level of detail. Certainly not KL, Meereen, Dothraki, the Wall, Braavos, Dorne.

  14. Kay,

They will not do detailed worldbuilding for the sake of worldbuilding, however much some of us might wish it. They might put up some important guns for Sam’s story (whatever that is in Winter), or even for another lead’s story, but it will (as always) be showing, not telling.

  15. Kay

    That’s probably true.

I would think if we find out about the new iron born leader and meet the northern lords and maybe even Rickon that would more likely happen in the first half of the season. We need to learn about them before major attacks happen at the Wall and/or along the coast.
  16. I have no clue what’s going to happen to Theon now that Stannis is dead :/ Alfie said his script was unpredictable so…..

  17. Alex Stroup,

Theon’s character is one of the ones where in the books I really have no idea where he’s headed. His arc as Reek was about reclaiming his personal identity, but now that he’s done that, I have a hard time seeing where there is for Theon Greyjoy to go.

  18. outdoorcats,

    Marg’s per-season count:

    S2: 4
    S3: 6
    S4: 6
    S5: 5

The show’s handling of Margaery has kind of puzzled me. Season 3 really made it seem like the show version of Margaery was going to be a big deal, and I assumed Season 5 would really be her big moment, given that it’s easily the most material she has in the books to date — but it really didn’t work out that way, and Season 5 continued the peculiar show tradition where the Tyrells start the season as a big deal and then fade out into insignificance by the end.

  19. Pigeon:
Conleth was definitely my favourite SDCC panel guest. He seems like a lot of fun. Liam too, particularly on Conan.

Many of the cast members have remarked how Conleth makes them all corpse on set and he does seem like a lot of fun, maybe he could have an alternative career as a comedian? I love some of the faces he pulls onscreen.

Don’t remember seeing Liam say anything on Conan, is there more footage?

  20. Sean C.,

A lot of actors don’t like watching themselves and purposely avoid their own stuff too. I don’t think that’s the case with Sophie of course but it’s not uncommon.

  21. Greenjones:
    Ravyn,

Yep. She was busy filming X-Men in Montreal while they were airing.

It just seemed like from her Comic Con panel, she had at least seen the Sansagate episode because she said “they cut away from me and I was giving a great performance”. I guess she could’ve been just joking, or maybe someone like her parents told her that they didn’t show any of her.

BTW, was there any news from her X-Men panel? I notice they put her near the center of the table, but i imagine with Jackman, Lawrence, and Fassbender, it was hard to get any attention.

  22. Squirrel:
Has this interview already been posted? So funny!

And how uncomfortable did Carice look when Liam made the joke about having a sex scene with Melisandre?

  23. Ravyn:
BTW, was there any news from her X-Men panel? I notice they put her near the center of the table, but i imagine with Jackman, Lawrence, and Fassbender, it was hard to get any attention.

The panel was so huge that everybody mainly got just a few lines in; she talked about Jean starting out as an “alienated” young woman (as well as praising Famke Janssen, like she’s been doing in every interview since she got the part). They also showed a no-VFX trailer that had a bit with Jean and Professor X as the first part.

  24. “So, Margaery will likely be in five episodes? Interesting.“

A false conclusion. I just watched an interview in which one of the writers said that the scripts are given to all the characters regardless of whether they’re in it or not. So with that background, and the fact that she said basically that they split it up into halves, it’s much more logical to assume that she got the first half of the season. And furthermore, that we know nothing about how many scenes in the first half of the season she’ll be in.

  25. “I’m Peter Dinklage….”

Now I see why the cast says Conleth is the most difficult to work with, due to all the pranks he play.

  26. How great it would be to be sitting next to Natalie on the flight… you can be sure I’d be reading over her shoulder…!

  27. Suddenly I understand why Varys is in Meereen. The writers probably think it is artistic and clever to have him meet Grey Worm. Eunuch meets eunuch…

  28. TFT,

But Grey Worm seems to be taken, and quite smitten, already. Although in this case, will two negatives result in a positive?

I am still frustrated that Varys didn’t make his way back to Westeros (KL) in order to “pave the way” for a Targ return. Varys in Meereen is way, way overkill and forced, imho. Oh well.
  29. Ravyn,

Peter Dinklage doesn’t watch the show at all. He’s said before he doesn’t get HBO and he only sees episode 1 at the premiere and whatever episode they have him do commentary on for the DVD. That’s it.

  30. Ravyn,

Yes you can watch x-men panel on youtube it was fun and yeah she got attention all of them got, moderator did his job just fine.

  31. Parakletos: I just watched an interview in which one of the writers said that the scripts are given to all the characters regardless of whether they’re in it or not.

That is interesting: in the past, I have read that the cast of Thrones (and most shows like Thrones) get only the scripts for which they are involved. I wonder if Thrones has shifted gears on this more recently: it would seem odd, given that “loose lips sink ships” and there really is no reason for, say, cast uninvolved with the final scenes at the Wall to know that Jon was getting knifed at the end of the season.

However, this should put to rest the ideas that people have put forward that Conleith and Carice knew about stuff from Season 6 before recently. If nothing else, then it’s clear that they are not learning that until about now.

  32. Hodor’s Bastard,

Ah, but is it any less forced to

have Varys just arbitrarily appear in Kings Landing in order to speed up Cersei’s colossal belly flop of rulership? After all, he’s heading to Meereen to aid Daenrys. Moreover, it’s pretty clear that his little bird network in Essos works pretty well. At any rate, it seems to completely follow from the trajectory on which the show is headed.

Indeed, at this point, I would say that it was much less forced than the book trajectory would be. (Of course, the show has made Varys a more major character than have the books: that might also have played a role.)

Ravyn: Sounds dangerous to hand scripts out just as they head out on a long flight to San Diego. Let’s hope no one leaves their scripts behind in the hotel room!

I think they are digital scripts only, but that makes me want to be a hacker.

Digital , didn’t think of that, still having the scripts before SDCC does seem a little chancy, I wonder under what restrictions they are about how to handle this teleplays?

  34. Wimsey,

Skip to about the 18min mark. How would you interpret her answer?

“Just because they get them…doesn’t mean they read them”

It’s really a reflection, I think, that the author of this piece ‘Cian’ didn’t watch the interview. Or s/he did, but forgot this part?

  35. So what do you think will happen in first 5 episodes? In my opinion, they will try to cover the material from previous books before they go deep into the Winds of Winter so that means: Iron Islands, The Young Griff, Mereen (Tyrion and Varys get information about the attack on the city and command, the dragons get out of the dungeon), Sam’s journey to Oldtown, Dany trying to add the Dothraki to her army, Daario and Jorah on the way to rescue her, Cersei’s and Margaery’s trial, Jaime returns to King’s Landing, reaction of the watchers and Mel and Davos to Jon’s death (if she’s going to try to resurrect him, she gives some sign), Theon and maybe some Bran scenes. The rest is mystery.

  36. Parakletos,

Oh, I know that a lot of actors do not like to read ahead in scripts. They want to treat each scene initially without any knowledge of what happens later in order to capture their immediate reactions (and an idea of what they think that the character’s immediate reaction would be). They also don’t like knowledge that their character would not have.

Still, a lot of showrunners make certain that actors are like this, and don’t let them read scripts for scenes unrelated to what the actor is filming.

  37. Wimsey,

‘Theon’ mentions that they gave him a fake script with his death, actually. One in which Bran stabs him atop Hodor, if I remember correctly. I thought that was pretty funny.

  38. Piotr: In my opinion, they will try to cover the material from previous books

I doubt that they will do any of that. Euron will turn up as a pirate king or just a pirate admiral from the Iron Islands. There will be no Kingsmoot or anything like that: it’s completely unnecessary as Euron will be a secondary (or even tertiary) character who is important only for what he is, not because of who he is or how he came to be what he is. So, his contributions to the plot will start where ever his contributions to the Winter plot start.

Sam will arrive at Oldtown when we first see him next year. So, that will just be the tail end of his last Crows chapter.

If Young Griff is included (which seems improbable now), then it will pick up where his contributions to the Winter plot picks up. Like Euron, YG is a secondary or tertiary character: it is the what of YG rather than the “who” of YG that will matter. This will be a variant on what we’ve read of Winter so far, except that it will be Ellaria and the Sand Snakes joining him rather than Arianne. (The only reasons I still suspect that YG might be the last casting call is that: 1) they cleared up a lot of plot-space by getting rid of Stannis early, and streamlining the plots behind Jaime’s and Brienne’s stories, and, 2) it would explain why Ellaria was so willing to risk execution to poison Myrcella if she thinks that she has another ally to which she can turn.)

Daeny adding the Dothraki to her army will be from Winter. Ditto the trials of Margaery and Cersei. Arya still has Blind Beth (and quite possibly warging with Nymeria) to do, but she’s essentially done the Mercy chapter already, so that’s a fair trade. Bran will be having visions: but I expect that they will be the ones he has in Winter after he’s undergone apotheosis, not the ones from Dragons. (Some of those were in his tree vision in Season 4, anyway: and most of the others had nothing to do with the story.)

Whatever things are like at the Wall will probably be toned down from the books: there, I can see it probably being complete mayhem with the Night Watch “Nationalists” fighting the Night Watch “Loyalists” (Jon had a lot of them cheering at the end of his speech) and the Wildlings, with Stannis’ skeleton force (small, but better armed and trained than the rest put together) probably also targeted by the Nationalists (Bowen Marsh makes it pretty clear that he thinks that Tommen is Robert’s legitimate son and that Stannis therefore is a traitor and a rebel). This will be much more subdued: there probably will not be a civil war when Jon wakes up.

One of the real wild card questions is: whither Ramsay? If the “Pink Letter” is more accurate than most of us had thought, and Ramsay is heading to the wall, then will that be happening next season? Of course, so many fans convinced themselves that the Pink Letter was a forgery that the very real possiblity that this might be happening early in the Winter book has gotten little consideration. It’s possible that once Ramsay realizes that his Reek and his wife are gone, then he will assume that they have fled to the Wall and follow.

  39. Luka Nieto:
Bran re-confirmed for season 6, and he will have “some interesting visions”:

    …. visionS.. Interesting…

So 2-3 visions at least? ToJ, young Ned,….

  40. Wimsey: If the “Pink Letter” is more accurate than most of us had thought

I must admit that I thought the Pink Letter was part of a grander, more manipulative, strategy regarding WF. To have it actually be the blunt truth was a shock (especially given what Stannis implies in the preview Theon chapter from TWoW). Odd, huh? Then again, I thought Stannis relying on sacrifices to the gods rather than his deeply-wrought commander skills as his strategy was a predictable and tragic downfall (and perhaps indicates the amount of atrocious bullshit associated religious fervor & overblown sacrifices (smoke and mirrors)…it brings the story logically down to human levels again).

I like how you have nurtured the the NW’s Nationalists vs Loyalists debate. If and when Jon is risen, and if his true parentage is ever publicized, the whole wall debate will definitely assume a new dynamic, given many of the remaining watchmen will probably have strong Targ feelings (one way or the other). Alliser as a mutineer bothered me though, given the stories that must have been told regarding Hardhome. Did that threat not matter to the Nationalists? Oh well, I have a feeling the mutineers will mortally regret their decision early in S6.

  41. Wimsey,

Yeah, I think most of the Greyjoys will be cut, as will Young Griff, or so I hope.

Meanwhile, characters are where they were at the end of Dance, which means the show has to stop dawdling and move on to Winter material. The only exception is Sam, heading to Oldtown with Gilly, which is where the new characters show up: Euron, to besiege it, Sam’s family, if he decides to take Gilly to them.

I’ve always believed the PL was written by Ramsay. The Wall is in danger, from strife between various factions, lack of a “crow” authority figure over the wildlings, impending attacks by the walkers. On top of that, Castle Black can’t be defended from the south, the direction Ramsay would approach it from.

I’m hoping for a more unified approach in season 6, as most of the disconnected stories of seasons 4 and 5 finally connect.

On the Wall, Boltons, crows, Mel, wildlings come together. I think Sansa, Theon, Brienne will head to Castle Black, too, as Theon told Sansa that her brothers went north. The white walkers will appear, with tie-in to Bran.

In the south, the Lannister-Martell situation turns to war.

Littlefinger will connect the south to the north. He was told to use Vale troops to take Winterfell. I think he will do just that, and finally a southern lord will find out about the walkers. It’s a weird way to do it, but he’s the only southerner who has anything to gain by heading north. This is true in the novels, as well. I think Harry the Heir is a feint. Sansa and LF’s goal is Winterfell and the North.

With Varys and Tyrion in control, Meereen and Slaver’s Bay calm down. With others taking over the dirty business of ruling, Dany is free to be worshiped by yet another group of people, and prepare her worshipers to head to Westeros.

  42. Wimsey: That is interesting: in the past, I have read that the cast of Thrones (and most shows like Thrones) get only the scripts for which they are involved.

The way the question was phrased, I thought Carolyn was saying that they do full scripts rather than partial scripts for everyone. However, I thought it was left a little ambiguous as to whether actors not in an episode at all would receive scripts for that episode. Then again, Finn implied early on that he’d read the Episode 10 script, and he wasn’t in that episode.

However, this should put to rest the ideas that people have put forward that Conleith and Carice knew about stuff from Season 6 before recently. If nothing else, then it’s clear that they are not learning that until about now.

I never thought that Carice’s extra knowledge came from the scripts, although I hadn’t heard stuff about Conleth. But Carice had said in an interview that she overheard something she probably shouldn’t have from a producer. This isn’t the original article, but it is referring to the same thing:

The actress teased that she heard something “quite spectacular” from the producer when she was rerecording some of her dialogue. She did not, however, reveal what it was. –http://www.ibtimes.com/game-thrones-carice-van-houten-teases-her-season-6-role-talks-about-jon-snow-1981046

Excellent interview with the cast by EW. The producer seemed very down with the idea of a two-parter season 7

Hannah seems to have broken out of her shell in this interview: “‘Uncharted territory’? That’s two words!” The look Natalie gives her. So funny!

But my favorite is John Bradley. I’d always noticed the sweating, but I’d never thought about how bad that could get in some tropical location like Oldtown. Of course I’ll hate it. Look at this! A Song of Ice and Fire – in one man! Conleth is hilarious, undoubtedly, but my favorite comedian is John Bradley. (And yet again, Hannah was getting her digs in saying she knew, no matter what, John would find something to complain about.)

  44. Wimsey,

I agree. I doubt any of the new characters will have their own story arcs, but will rather service the existing characters. With only 2 seasons left, and a mountain of stories to resolve and characters to bring together, there just isn’t any time to start something new.

  45. I’ve always thought the Pink Letter was authentic. I never got into the conspiracy theories surrounding it. Ramsay of course could’ve still been lying about some of the letter’s content, but I really never found much reason to disbelieve Ramsay was the author.

Also, I really hope Euron is more than just a one season wonder. He deserves to stick around for a while!

  46. Ginevra: Hannah seems to have broken out of her shell in this interview:“‘Uncharted territory’?That’s two words!”The look Natalie gives her.So funny!

Kinda glad HBO sent Hannah Murray out to San Diego. She tends to get overlooked in the big cast, but I think she brings a lot of humanity to the Wall story. Her scenes with Maester Aemon and Shireen in S5 were brief, but memorable.

  47. Robb Snow:
I’ve always thought the Pink Letter was authentic. I never got into the conspiracy theories surrounding it. Ramsay of course could’ve still been lying about some of the letter’s content, but I really never found much reason to disbelieve Ramsay was the author.

Also, I really hope Euron is more than just a one season wonder. He deserves to stick around for a while!

I thought it was real too. Ramsey is exaggerating about it but I think that it is from him. I don’t believe the Stannis theory personally. The spearwives did get caught at Winterfell. It would not surprise me that Mance Rayder was taken into custody at Winterfell.

We will see about Euron. We are navigating without a book map next season. His arc might be more if they are expanding the Reach stuff. They are casting the Tarly family. I think it will be tied into that arc with Sam.

  48. We could see them attack the Reach and see Sam going to Horn Hill with Gilly. It could be happening around the same time. Sam is hearing about the attacks on the ship to Oldtown and the road to Horn Hill. He tries to talk to his Dad when he drops off Gilly. Randyll Tarly doesn’t want to talk to him because of their terrible relationship.

Maybe they have their own confrontation where Sam finally stands up to his father. Sam is not a coward and wants to know what is going in the world. Then leaves for Oldtown because he past seeking his Dad’s approval. He just wanted to know because he’s an adult and a member of the Night’s Watch. He says goodbye to everyone. They tie in the Tarly family, the Iron born, and Oldtown all in Sam’s arc. We go on from there when the Ironborn try to attack Oldtown. Sam’s arc is most likely where they will have everything because of the jam packed season.

I don’t know how they will set it up. I think this is a good possibility after the initial introduction of Euron. I am not a writer and this might be a terrible way to do that story line. It is just an idea. Please don’t hold it to me at all. Just fun speculation.

  49. Show!Sam is braver than Book!Sam. The way he stood up for Gilly last season.

Show!Sam would talk to his Dad and close that chapter in his life. He is dropping off Gilly for safety reasons. He has moved forward and found his place at the NW.

  50. Has anyone ever considered the possibilty that Euron could be introduced trough Arya? It`s heavily hinted that Euron killed Balon with a faceless man so maybe the actually show him hiring a FM in Braavos.

  51. Angela: I think this is a good possibility after the initial introduction of Euron.

I like your idea. I think Sam is going to become even more important in the next two seasons. Perhaps Gilly will also increase in importance. It would make sense to drop these two in a storyline with new characters and new areas of Westeros – sort of our introduction to them.

  52. Squirrel:
Has anyone ever considered the possibilty that Euron could be introduced trough Arya? It`s heavily hinted that Euron killed Balon with a faceless man so maybe the actually show him hiring a FM in Braavos.

Maybe. I don’t know. I think they want to quickly get past AFFC Iron Islands material in Season 6. It might be a better idea to introduce him on the Iron Islands and then head straight for the Reach. I might be incorrect in that assumption. That might take up too much time. We will find out in April.

I am not dissing your idea. I just disagree that it might be too far back in AFFC to have it next season. A quick Kingsmoot and then set off sailing South. I could be completely off base. Your idea is just as valid. It is a jam packed season and I don’t know how much time they will devout to that part of AFFC. If we had more seasons than 7 to 8, then they would have him in Braavos in the premiere. They would have more breathing room to do something like showing how he killed Balon.

I think they will just have an announcement that Balon is dead. They will call a Kingsmoot and Euron will be chosen as King. The Ironborn go off to raid the South.

  53. Squirrel,

Oh wow, that’s interesting. Balon is still alive on the show. Euron hires a faceless man to kill him, and meets Arya. I don’t think Arya will be that assassin; the casting included a female leader of an acting troupe. Arya will probably join that troupe, and leave with them.

  54. Kay: I like your idea. I think Sam is going to become even more important in the next two seasons. Perhaps Gilly will also increase in importance. It would make sense to drop these two in a storyline with new characters and new areas of Westeros – sort of our introduction to them.

That is the easiest way to introduce new areas. You have your established characters go there and we see through their eyes. It is not just world building in the show. It is moving a character forward. It is telling the audience what is happening in that region without using up a lot of precious airtime.

Sam is going to Oldtown anyway. D&D might as well put the Ironborn and the expanded Reach story line in the same boat. Kill multiple stones with one bird. They don’t have a lot of time to introduce Oldtown and Euron. This is how you do those introductions. Sam’s arc to become a Maester at the Citadel.

    Story line done.

  55. Do we know if the actor who played Balon is coming back for Season 6? That might give us an indication of how they will handle Balon’s death. If he is filming lots of scenes in Belfast, then you never know what they can squeeze in the premiere. More than just a funeral cameo. Any news about the Ironborn crew?

Is it time to Twitter stalk Gemma Whelan?

  56. Kay: I like your idea. I think Sam is going to become even more important in the next two seasons. Perhaps Gilly will also increase in importance. It would make sense to drop these two in a storyline with new characters and new areas of Westeros – sort of our introduction to them.

I’ve sometimes entertained the beginnings of a crackpot theory that Gilly’s son could have some import in the series. I mean, as far as we know, the white walkers recruit new members exclusively from Craster’s sons. And I don’t think Craster’s place is geographically that convenient to the “land of always winter”. Maybe there is something in the bloodline of these boys?

Of course the weak point or at least one of them of this theory is that, barring some type of time jump, it doesn’t look like little Sam will be old enough to do much of anything by the end of the series.

Still, it would give Sam and Gilly some connection to the remaining story.

  57. mitch: They’ve already filmed sex scenes together.

That’s part of the (inside) joke.

Wow, a belated thank you for that link. It looks like a wonderful, smart, thoughtful movie. Liam Cunningham looks years younger without the beard and Carice actually looks – likeable. I’m going to see if that movie is available anywhere, love scenes between the two of them looked interesting. Plus the movie is about real people and events. As much as I like my GoT fantasies, reality is nice as well.

  58. Ravyn: With only 2 seasons left, and a mountain of stories to resolve and characters to bring together, there just isn’t any time to start something new.

Well, there really are not mountains of stories/characters to resolve. (They really are one and the same!) There are: Jon (assuming they were not forced to truncate his story already), Daeny, Tyrion, Arya, Sansa, Bran, Jaime, Brienne, Cersei and Sam. Those really are the only protagonists still standing.

Moreover, in the final outcome, it’s going to be mostly Jon, Daeny, Tyrion, Arya, Sansa and Bran. The others almost certainly will drop to supporting roles (or be dead) by then.

Robb Snow: I’ve always thought the Pink Letter was authentic. I never got into the conspiracy theories surrounding it. Ramsay of course could’ve still been lying about some of the letter’s content, but I really never found much reason to disbelieve Ramsay was the author.

Lying, or mistaken. I had assumed that he was wrong about smashing Stannis’ army: I figured that he actually had wiped out the Northerners besieging Winterfell, and assumed that it was Stannis’ army. Of course, he would have been lying about the sword: but he would have known about that from Mance, and he would have been assuming that he’d find it (or not) for all that it mattered. Now, I think that it is the case that the letter was written after Ramsay defeated Stannis, and that this near-final Dragons chapter is chronologically after some of the early Winter chapters.

I forget the reasons why people convinced themselves that the letter was forged, but they mostly were along the lines of the reasons that people gave as to why Harry Potter was not really with Albus Dumbledore at the end of Half Blood Prince, and that Dumbledore therefore was still alive. Dumbledore, you see, would have corrected Harry to say “Professor Snape” when Harry exploded with the knowledge that Snape was the one who had given Voldemort the prophecy. That real people are not machines, and that Dumbledore might have considered it more urgent to assuage Harry’s anger without giving away Snape’s secret (and it was obvious then that Dumbledore was keeping some secret: he basically tells Harry what it is tacitly!) just could not have been.

Robb Snow: Also, I really hope Euron is more than just a one season wonder. He deserves to stick around for a while!
This obsession with Euron puzzles me. I do not even remember him appearing in the books, although I’ve been quoted some gods-awful dialogue that he supposedly spouts off in one of Asha’s Crows chapters. (I’ve never re-read any of the chapters attached to the faux protagonists in that book, so I cannot vouch for their authenticity.) Euron seems just sort of over-the-top silly to me: sort of like a bad Johnny Depp character in some of Depp’s lesser movies.

  59. Hodor’s Bastard: I like how you have nurtured the the NW’s Nationalists vs Loyalists debate.

Well, those ideas are inspired in parts with conversations we have had: you were the one to first use the word “nationalists,” after all, and I think that it is a good way to describe them. Jon should have supporters: and the Wildlings seem won to his cause. Stannis’ skeleton crew is a big question mark: they were ill-pleased with Jon, but if they had paid any attention at all, then they had to know that Marsh & Co. were hostile to their king and their god.

As for Alliser’s behavior, I would bet that a lot of the NW people simply did not believe the stories from Hardhome: they would dismiss them as lies perpetrated by traitors as a smokescreen for their treason. It is not as if we have not seen real people doing that sort of thing in our world. and very recently, at that!

  60. Indila,

I thought Natalie meant she has been given the scripts for episodes 1 to 5. Lena Headey said before (on a video I saw on youtube) that the cast gets the first five scripts prior to filming. Then they get the next five afterwards while they are already shooting scenes.
